These Are The Photos That Have Sparked An Online War! My 2 cents.
When I saw this post earlier this morning, I was excited, I mean look at these models, aren’t they the true embodiment of what Africans should look like? Upon scrutiny I was able to dig out that the photos had been used for some advert that people had chosen to misquote. It is undeniable that Africa needs help, apart from the imperialism that has been the bane of our existence for decades now, we need help, financial help, spiritual help and.. Intellectual help.
The advert has elicited mixed reactions from the public especially from the captions which have been seen as deameaning to the African populace. But is it? If the said party got help, then we should all learn to take it easy.
Jonathan HornerThink this was in Lürzer’s years ago. I like it – it shames people into donating to those less fortunate rather than just buying the latest consumerist whatever you don’t need. It works for me. The bigger question is it racist? Dunno… it certainly is racial. Might be better to do different continents or at least not all from the same country… What it feels like is a photographer was on safari so the agency goes: shoot this idea while you’re down there and then we’ll enter it into awards… I think for it to totally work you need famine relief victims rather than just normal maasais (which is a bit insulting as they don’t look like on death’s door) but then with famine victims you shift the mood on from racist / racial debate to a bad taste / inappropriate debate.
Mkamzee Chao MwatelaIt’s a bad ad. And people can spend their money how they want, they are actually not responsible for feeding Africa- let people buy Louis Vuitton with the money they have worked for. When your own systems are at fault and you keep voting to keep these faulty political systems in power, you will not guilt trip someone who wants to buy Ray Ban sunglasses. And you will not use Africans to do it. This politics of resentment is utter and absolute rubbish and never solves the problem. Yuck, in all ways and all forms. Just yuck!!
Innocent OmondiThere is a pressing issue that is at the heart of this campaign. Western culture of consumerism is a plague that eats away on humanity of the rich and able. The bigger fight is not the seemingly exploitative nature of the subject portrayed but rather the glaring inequality that exists in our human race .
I liked this one more:
“…Raymond MwasaruIt is in fact a realistic campaign. The money some of us spend on the not so basic “needs” can help the less fortunate get what is most basic….
Masud RanaThose who are suffering from extreme poverty only they know what do they mean by their pose with such type of costly belongings. These people are not getting food and that’s why they are showing their anger to the people who are doing extravagance. The price of these costly belongings can serve their food. That’s why there is saying “Nero fiddles while Rome burns” We all should think of the poor people who are living around the world because they are not alien rather they have right to live in this world. Feeling so so sorry for these people. This is really so much shocking that they are dying and we are playing and enjoying with their food in the form of costly Alcohol, Goggles, Vanity Bag and Shaving lotion
