This Is why Kenyan Entertainment Will Keep Falling Flat On It’s Face!

Kenya has a lot of talent, it’s an endless flow of talent but most of these talents do not amount to anything. And I believe the ‘failure to launch’ condition that constantly plagues us is caused by the unbridled copy cat game that goes on.

Case in Point, Real House helps of Kawangware was a show created to give us a hilarious peek into the lives of house helps in Kenya.

It went on to win awards and now Kenyan producers and script writers are bombarding us with constant programs of ‘funny ’mboch programs such as NTV’s Auntie Boss.

The guys behind the Real HousHelps Of Kawangware also produced Hapa Kule news ,a news parody show that gave us hilarious takes on news and other hot topics .Now we have ‘Jameni’ a clone of Hapa Kule and Redykulas. Jameni is a concept that I have seen somewhere probably in Redykulas with the cross-dressers, impersonation of public figures and skits.

Still on the comedy scene, Teacher Wanjiku popularized jokes in an accent and perfected it .Now everyone is doing jokes in accents the only variation is that the jokes are now in Luhya and Somali accents. Then there were the tribal jokes that every ‘comedian’ forces down our throat. And let’s not even forget the unending serving of ‘My Uncle ’Jokes, don’t you have other relatives to misuse in your not-funny-anymore jokes?

Then there was that time when Kiss 100 got a comedian on the show and it became a hit, soon after that EVERYONE had a serious person and a comedian in their breakfast show.

Willy Paul decided to do Bongo music and soon every gospel musician was trying to be Rose Muhando or Diamond. Nigerian music became cool and soon musicians were trying to do their best version of Nigerian songs.

Ghafla is the most famous entertainment blog but as you can now see, there are so many small blogs trying to be Ghafla instead of venturing into something of their own. There can only be one Ghafla. Period.

As demonstrated above, most Kenyans are not original. Whatever they do seems to be a clone of something else and this in my opinion, many trying their hand in entertainment will bite the dust. This is because many have refused to think outside the box and try something new. Something that has not been tried and tested.Nigerians have done their ghost movies and it seems to have worked for them. They have done their music in ethnic languages and we still enjoy their music even if we can barely understand or sing along.

Tanzanians are doing their own thing too and that is why you will see Nigerian music and Tanzanian music on constant replay in Radio stations. These two counties’ music gets even more airplay than our Kenyan music. This is because they are doing what comes naturally to them, they are not trying to sound ‘Brirish’, American or like another country. They are being different, they are being them!
