Top Celebrities Who Have Changed After Their New Found Fame (And Not for The Best)
They are our beloved Kenyan celebs and we appreciate them for keeping us entertained but for some of us who knew them before they became famous and let’s be honest kind-of rich, we can barely recognize them.
For those who have had a taste of the real fame (I’m talking about Hollywood celebs and not this make-shift fame of akina Kaka Sungura), they will confess to one thing fame is like crack-cocaine. The first time you hear the crowds scream your name can be compared to your first snot of the highly addictive substance, and as we all know the first snot of that coco and your just a few more away from becoming a crack-head.
That is what real fame does to a person, it changes you some for the better some for the worse.
Having worked at Ghafla, or rather the entertainment scene for the last year and a half, I have had the pleasure of meeting some of the big names in the industry, some who I barely knew others who were once my favorite celebrities and others yet to make their mark in the industry.
And while the humility for some of our local celebrities can touch you, the arrogance of the rest can leave you with the taste of ass in your mouth like you just came from performing anulingus.
But of all the arrogant Kenyan celebs I’ve met, a few stand out;
Rabbit a.k.a Kaka Sungura
I first encountered Rabbit back in my high school days, when he was only known for his one song that was in the air wave ‘Betty’ featuring Harry Kimani. We met along Tom Mboya Street and he had just come from making copies of his mix tape. And 30 seconds into the conversation I loved how humble he was and I could tell that eventually he would make it big. That did not take long and fast forward to the year 2015, the former Rabbit now calling himself Kaka Sungura, Chief Commander of Kaka Empire is one of the most arrogant celebs out there.
I recently approached him while he was playing coach for a recently completed competition, not as a rep from Ghafla (because we all know that most celebs would run away when they hear the name) but as a fan, perhaps hoping at the back of my mind that he would remember my face from our ancient meeting, but he almost literally shoved me aside like he was Kanye and I was some sort of stalker paparazzi.
Octopizzo
Back in the day Ghafla didn’t set the trend for ‘The Trend’ (yes Larry, I said it), when Octo was still shooting his music videos in the narrow corridors of Kibera, Ghafla writers of yester years were his biggest fans and would promote all his songs and videos (do you remember that Octo?).
I used to think Octo was one ‘Sick Cunt’ (look it up, this is the highest form of praise) but after having an actual conversation with the guy, calling him arrogant would be an insult to the word.
I could go on, because the list long but my editor would have me for dinner if I mention some names.
The bottom line is fame changes people no matter how little it is. We are always chasing popularity and fame and at the back of our minds tell ourselves that we won’t change and we won’t become as arrogant as some celebs but the truth is the arrogance comes with the territory. Think about it, if you’ve worked your way up from the slums of Kibera to being a UN ambassador aren’t you allowed to have some semblance of pride? I know I would.
