Why I Hate Religion, But Love Jesus
That is the title of a poem that’s currently going viral in the Kenyan blogosphere right now. The title may provoke a strong reaction, but look closer at the message of the poem before shouting ‘blasphemy!’
The poet in question is a young man named Jefferson Bethke. The message behind his thought-inspiring poem is that religion is more of a facade aimed at self-justification, while Jesus is in himself an embodiment of the goodness and purpose of Christianity.
While Jefferson is certainly not bashing Christians, as the title would have you think, he has done well to carefully highlight the hypocrisy that is admittedly rampant in our churches today. In Kenya, it has to be said that several churches have been relegated to fashion shows as members of the congregation try and outdo each other’s show of wealth.
