Why Wyre Is A Genius Who Deserves More Appreciation Than He Gets

Dancehall artiste Wyre is a veteran in Kenya’s music industry. He’s a pioneer who deserves to be tattooed the word ‘legend’. But the truth is he doesn’t get as much credit as he deserves. From time to time, he falls prey to criticism but personally I feel Wyre is an artiste that should be immune to that. Everything he has achieved can’t be easily emulated. The laid back superstar boasts of one thing many artistes only dream of – longevity.

Neither has Wyre faded nor has he failed. A decade after starting out, he still manages to release good music. Thousands have grown from kids to parents while still keeping up with Wyre’s slew of street anthems. Despite his incredible feats, he has never been on Diamond or Davidp levels of superstardom. Why is that?

Is it because the love for Dancehall isn’t spread across Africa? It’s highly unlikely. There are many genres that have limited reach but the hit makers behind them still acquire international fame. I think there’s something about an artiste’s physical and personal appeal that determines how fans view them. Some artistes are respected while others are adored.

A comparison between our artiste in question Redsan for example can be ideal. Wyre is respected but not adored. People don’t get excited about him they way they do about other big stars. Redsan is adored more than Wyre despite having done less in his career. Methinks you have to look a certain way and carry a celeb attitude with you. Despite’s Wyre’s gigantic strides, he’s still humble like the teacher’s favorite school kid. He just won’t have scandals or interesting news. Someone like him ought to have an ego and wild attitude but the love child won’t have any of that.

waishhhhhh

That fact right there leads me to another point. Artistes ought to be newsworthy. You have to keep doing stuff that’ll keep you in the headlines. Wyre doesn’t do that. The only time you see his name in blogs is when he has been nominated for some award or when he has done a collabo with an international artiste. There’s just no juicy stuff. No accusations for him to come clean on. This pulls down the scale on his ‘likometer’(popularity metre)

Ever since Wyre started out, his career has ranged from pretty good to very good, and he has showed change and evolution in theme. Despite being a dancehall artiste, he has never hesitated to jump into other genres. Recently, he even did a remix of Kanda Bongo Man’s ‘Inde Monie’, approved by the man behind the original track. ’That’s jam that was a super hit in the 90s. What’s the definition of a complete hit maker? There you have it.

Everything Wyre does spells hard work. Many are willing to pick the fruits but not many are willing to put in the work thus the former Necessary Noize membe’s efforts should be lauded rather than shoved into normalcy.

Wyre’s former Necessary Noize mate, Nazizi vanished into oblivion and so have most of the strong artistes who started out with him. Perhaps only Jua Cali is managing to cling on to relevancy. The guy still jumps on stage with the same energy that he used to have 8 years ago. Others got tired and left the playground for the new kids. As all this happens, the love child in his own league, keeps doing what he does best.

Big Up Wyre
