‘Woman’ at the MJ Centre
The 8th of March is International Women’s Day, and as a pre-celebration, The Michael Joseph Centre will be playing host to a concert branded ‘Woman’. This unique event will feature 16 key women in the Kenyan entertainment industry.
The leading ladies on stage include June Gachui, Ngwatilo, Sentimental Floetry, Christine Kamau, Liz Njoroge, Ma3 The Band, Sara Mitaru, Dorothy Ghettuba, Kathy Kiragu, Sage, Murfy’s fLaw, Essy of Aziza Band, Nicole Maloba, Kasiva, Viola Karuri and Amare Poeta. With acts ranging from free verse to ne-soul and rock, the night is bound to provide a potpourri of celebration that won’t be strictly feminine.
The theme for this year’s International Women’s Day is ‘Connecting Girls: Inspiring Futures.’ As part of this central idea, all proceeds from the concert will go towards Huru’s Reusable Sanitary Pad Project.
The project was launched in January 2008 in partnership with America Share, the non-profit arm of Micato Safaris. It is devoted to assisting Kenyans girls in School. Research revealed that girls in Nairobi slums often scavenge for used and discarded pads or use old cloths, toilet paper, bits of mattresses, or sheets of newspaper as makeshift pads.
To resolve this, Huru designed a Reusable Sanitary Napkin (RSN) program that is currently being launched in Kenya.
The date is the 7th of March 2012 from 7.30 p.m. to 10.00 p.m. as you connect with these talented artistes, contribute for a crucial cause, and usher in ‘Woman’. Entry is only 500/= and can be purchased at the Michael Joseph Centre reception desk. There’s plenty of safe parking, as well as direct access to public transport.
