Zuku TV Set To Strengthen Regional Basketball with ‘Slamfest’

Premium Kenyan broadcaster Zuku in conjunction with Vision 21 Sports Consulting launched its Slamfest Basketball competition last week to pitch 8 countries against each other for $100,000 prize.

The show  is a first of its kind regional basketball tournament that will see teams competing against
each other for the top prize of US$100,000 and the title “Slamfest Champions 2012.”

The tournament will bring together some of the best players from Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, South Sudan, Nigeria, Senegal, Benin and Rwanda, with each team consisting of 10 players who have been carefully
selected by coordinatiors assigned by Vision 21 in each country to ensure the best quality of play.

“We are excited about this event as it will provide an avenue for showcasing local talent and skill as well as raising the standard of regional basketball and basketball production” said Wananchi Group CEO Richard Bell at the launch ceremony. “We recently announced our 2012 strategy, which has a number of ambitious local projects at its heart. Slamfest is the first of many.”

The tournament, which will be held at the Kasarani Stadium, will run between the 20th to the 22nd of July 2012 and will see a total of 16 games played.

The tournament will be preceded by the broadcast of a documentary series called Passport which will visit the eight participating countries and showcase the expanding basketball culture as well as the broader social and cultural environment.

Audiences across the continent will be also be able to catch the action on Zuku Sports, Channel 301 and Zuku Sports HD. The pay TV broadcaster has also partnered with various broadcast stations across Africa to air the tournament.
