The inaugural Media Council of Kenya Journalism Awards took place on teh 4th of May 2012 at Hilton Hotel in Nairobi, recognizing a host of reporters and industry professionals for the hard work and excellent ethics they displayed throughout the year from 2011.
The chief guest of the event was the Deputy House Speaker Farah Maalim, and the awards were purposefully meant to coincide with the World Press Freedom Day. Some of the biggest winners of the evening were NTV’s Smitri Vidyarthi who took home the ‘Best News Anchor’ Award as well as Mohammed Ali of KTN who grabbed the top prize of ‘Journalist of the Year’.
It was interesting to note however that cash prizes were not offered and some ‘leading’ journalists not working for local media companies were not featured. Here is the complete list of winners at the Awards gala that was MC’d by radio personality Larry Asego:
