ASPIRING ARTIST BOOTCAMP

Welcome to the artist bootcamp.

So ladies and gentlemen, have you ever thought about what it takes to be a star? Have you ever thought about the hardwork, time and dedication, blood, sweat& tears it takes inspite of how talented you may be? Or let me try a different approach, do you know how many horrible songs i have to endure in the name of doing music reviews? Some of them are plain lazy& some of them are a production let down. Take the time to get everything right. Get a producer who shares your vision& passion and work ethic. Someone who isn’t looking for an easy formula for success because that’s how you end up as a one-hit-wonder.
What is it about the youth of today thinking that HipHop is an easy meal ticket? Come on people, put in an effort into the art form that is HipHop! It takes time but when you make it, your music; your soul’s rhythm will be appreciated. And that is when you begin to enjoy the reknown that the likes of Camp Mulla, Octopizzo et al are.
Again, not all the blame lies with upcoming investors, established artists need to mentor these fledgling talents. Octopizzo and Muthoni The Drummer Queen are doing their bit. I say this as i think of my favourite underground act Coola Gang who have largely been ignored yet the talent in the group& and their affiliates are large unappreciated. Here i am not doing marketing for the group but simply spitting HipHop gospel as a HipHop lover. All you established artists will not have done a single thing worth note if you haven’t brought up a new talent or mentored a struggling artist. Not a thing.
That is my humble opinion (i seem to have had an epiphany of opinions today don’t i?).

Abbas and Chiwawa’s new music video trailer

So I’m sure by now you probably know that Abbas and Chiwawa dropped their beef and decided to go back to what they do best… produce extra good music.

The two individually do good music but I think we can all agree when I say that the music is great when they collaborate.

Take their track ‘Abbachiwa’ for instance. The lyrics in the song are just off the hook and the energy that the two have when they are on mutual grounds is just crazy.

The video for the track ‘Abbachiwa’ has been done and all i can say about it is AWESOME. Well, I haven’t seen the whole video yet but the trailer says it all.

Have a look at it and stay tuned for the official video.

The much anticipated ‘Mama’ video from Octopizzo to be released on Sunday

Octopizzo has done so many tracks in such a short time and it has reached a point that it is now hard to keep up with his consistency.

I love all his music but still non can compare to ‘mama’ which was one of his first tracks that he did. The track dedicated to his mother received airplay on Ghetto radio (where I heard it from) and since then I have been searching for it with no results. Contacting Octopizzo, he said that the time to officially release it had not yet arrived. Now is that time.

The official video for the track will be realsed this Sunday at the DJ Hassan show on KBC TV.

The video for his song with Muthoni the Drummer Queen is set to be released next too.

You have heard this first from Ghafla!Kenya. For real, nobody else has this information… up until now.

A New Crop of Kenyan Film Makers

The film industry may seemingly be fledgling in Kenya, but one thing is certain, film groups are not resting on their laurels and constantly coming up with revolutionary ways to highlight issues that affect their local settings.

One such grouping is the Kisumu Lakers Art Group, brought to light by Standard writers, who have produced a series of films with the latest one tackling the land grabbing issues at the Lakeside city. KLAG has put together an insightful film titled Upon a Time which recently premiered in Kisumu and managed to attract a large number of film enthusiasts in the area.
While admittedly the production was not of the best quality, the Nyanza regional director of Film Services, Mr. Vincent Onyango, said that KLAG had shown them good can come out of the region and pledged to support them with more professional services if they planned for other films.
A variety of local film production houses cite a number of obstacles towards producing top quality films including budgetary limits as well as expensive equipment resulting in substandard audio and video output. With an increasing number of Kenyans demanding international standards in entertainment, and the ever successful Hollywood engine, it would be upto Kenyan film makers to be unique and original, relating with their target audiences.

Spoken word moves a notch higher with the Rastaman

If you attended last Tuesday’s Kwani Open Mic event at Club Sounds then you’d know the sweetness that comes with poetry/spoken word performances. The hype and comedy in it just keeps you coming back, not to mention the poems rich in words and rhythm.

A Rastaman by the stage name ‘Kennet B’, real name Kennedy Odongo gave us a piece of what he has in the world of poetry and when he left the stage, we just kept hoping that there was another round from him coming up.

Dressed cultural, in a Kanzu and neat dreadlocks, Kennet B delivers his poems in a manner that makes it impossible for you to turn away. Strong and positive words, delivered in a comic way just makes it fun to listen to this guy.

He has also done numerous videos for his poems, one of them being ‘The Green Talk’ that is aimed at raising awareness about the importance of conserving the environment. Check it out.

Reason for Octopizzo’s Illuminatti claims unveiled

I know by now you have probably heard about the allegations about Octopizzo being one of the illuminatty members. All these, as we thought, came from the fact that he has risen so fast, from hustling for shows, to having more than three interviews and two video shoots a day. It turns out that these were just half of the reasons that fueled these claims.

Apparently, if you are extremely successful in whatever you do, just like Octopizzo is in his music and side businesses, you are part of the illuminati crew. Rubbish.

Octopizzo has been working on the launch and release of his own clothing wear, specifically, Snap-backs that are already on sell. Now, these snap-backs, written ‘Octopizzo’ at the front and ‘Number Nane’ at the back also have a triangle inscribed inside a circle. As they say, this is an illuminati sign.

Octo sign

Octo Number nane

I just contacted Octopizzo an hour ago and this is what he had to say, “That sign simply represents strength. That illuminati story is just nonsense but I guess they’ll just keep on coming because I will keep on rising. I am actually just getting started and by the end of this month they will all be calling me The Mason.”

Well, there you have it.

This is How Far Redykulass Have Come

Just thought we would take you down memory lane with a vintage photo of the Redykulass team outside Kenyatta University as they kicked off there career that made them a force to reckon with in the country’s entertainment circles albeit for a period of time.

Walter Mongare, Tony Njuguna and John Kiarie make up the Redykulass group that defied the norm to emerge regular features on Kenyan television and at a variety of events. Have a look at the photo:

IMAX Timings Through the Weekend

IMAX has been quite the buzz these past few weeks as Kenyans discovered the power of enhanced audio and visual quality conceptualized in an IMAX in 3D experience.

As the pioneering cinematic technology sets a firm foot in Kenya, Angel Media, the brains behind it, have been working round the clock to market the new experience. Angel media have teamed up with media outlets including Kiss TV, Easy FM and Capital FM for a variety of launches and events such as the Avengers premiere and the just concluded Technite.

If you’re planning on catching a film at the brand new IMAX XX Century complex this weekend, have a look at the scheduled timings through to 17th May 2012 for Avengers and Under the Sea.

The next movie release to look forward to at the IMAX, though in 2D this time, is Johnny Depp’s Dark Shadows, expected out on May 18th 2012. Check out a brief synopsis of the film:

DARK SHADOWS
Genre: Fantasy, Comedy, Sci Fi
Starring: Johnny Depp and Michelle Pfieffer
In the year 1752, Joshua and Naomi Collins, with young son Barnabas, set sail from Liverpool, England to start a new life in America. But even an ocean was not enough to escape the mysterious curse that has plagued their family. Two decades pass and Barnabas (Johnny Depp) has the world at his feet-or at least the town of Collinsport, Maine. The master of Collinwood Manor, Barnabas is rich, powerful and an inveterate playboy…until he makes the grave mistake of breaking the heart of Angelique Bouchard (Eva Green). A witch, in every sense of the word, Angelique dooms him to a fate worse than death: turning him into a vampire, and then burying him alive. Two centuries later, Barnabas is inadvertently freed from his tomb and emerges into the very changed world of 1972. He returns to Collinwood Manor to find that his once-grand estate has fallen into ruin. The dysfunctional remnants of the Collins family have fared little better…

Another huge international rapper to fly passed Kenya yet again.

It is really sad that we keep missing out on all these massively celebrated international artistes’ visit as they fly right passed us, over to our neighbouring countries.

It happened with rick Ross, Jay Z and now it is happening again with the lady with multiple personalities, Nicki Minaj. The ‘Your love’ singer who has touched huge success in the music business and is also an extremely good performer, will be heading over to Tanzania next month according to the Fiesta concert organiser.

Nicki Minaj, real name Onika Tanya Maraj is set to perform as the lead artiste at the annual Fiesta Concert that will be held in Tanzania next month.

When will we have a piece of these celebrated international artistes for ourselves? It is actually really sad to miss out on yet another great performance to be.

Coast artistes battle witchcraft on stage!

Weired things happen at the Coast. Last year we witnessed the birth of a goat with a human face and now we just witnessed, or at least told by the concerned artistes, ‘juju’ in music.

Coast artistes, Nyota Ndogo and Ally B were in for a rude shock when they went to perform in the Southern Coast. When it reached time for their performance and mics were in hands, music failed to play.

As Pulse says, the artistes even brought in their CDs only to find out that they were also unable to play. What’s even worse about this weird incident is that they even tried to change the player, but all in vain.

Both fans and artistes convinced themselves that that was pure ‘juju’ and not a coincidence of malfunctioning machines. With all that has been happening at the Coast, I tend to agree.

“DJ Hassan to blame for Chaguo flop!” says insyder

Have you read this months issue of the Insyder magazine?! If you haven’t, then you should buy it or keep it Ghafla for the down low…

INSYDER MAGWhy do i think you should cop this months issue?! Well they have heaped ALL the blame for the fiasco that was CHAT Awards: Teeniez Spin Master on DJ Hassan!
Apparently, DJ Hassan rallied his fans against DJ Kaytrixx and got them to post hate speech-esque posts on the CHAT facebook wall or so they seem to insinuate. I say apparently because this perspective only seems to appear clear to the good folk (smirk) at Insyder. WHAT?! How now?! Ibolachi?! Good morning?! Nay, good night! Go to sleep! Ezigbo mbede!
First off, no one attacked the Chat Awards out of sheer malice but because (obviously) alot of emotion had been vested in them and the good teeniez of Kenya felt short changed. Fast forward a week later, Groove was held and the praises sang on how it was organized &executed rent the skies for days nay, weeks!

Why was there such a stark difference in reception of the 2 award shows? Well, one was well planned and executed the other was not. One was transparently conducted the other was not. One fostered a harmoniuos atmosphere by including every interested party, the other did not. I’ll let you decide which was which.
How did any of the invited guests or award nominees foster the discontent that was expressed at unprecedented levels? And to compare DJ Hassan’s& Mbusi’s reactions is very retrogressive! Instead of owning up to a simple mistake and apologising for it, you attack a victim of your oversights? No! That is simply not the way forward.
That is my humble opinion.

Ciku Admits She is Afraid of Technology

On her latest column post in Zuqka, Ciku’s Beefs, the celebrated Kenyan radio personality made a startling revelation that would come as much of a surprise to all her ‘Busted’ fans.

Miss Muiruri outrightly admitted that she has for the most part of her life had a ‘fear of technology’. Ciku admitted that she does not download music, use the internet on her phone, record shows on her decoder or fully understand the concept of Twitter.
The latter however is what is steadily changing this perception for her as she gradually falls in love with the social media scape especially on Twitter. She cited information from a trending topic we featured on the social media site last week, with the hashtag #ContestantsBetterthanPrezzoForBBA
Click here to read more on the trend
Ciku urges Kenyans to support their own and even goes ahead to give her prediction of who she thinks will take home the Big Brother Stargame title, and you guessed it, a Kenyan! Seems the witty characters and trends on Twitter have clearly captured her affections. Who do you think will win the BBA Stargame?

Use of ‘Plastic’ on the Rise

It seems that an increasing number of Kenyans are choosing to go to entertainment venues without hard cash, but instead opting to use either their debit or credit cards. It’s not unusual these days to see a select number of revelers in the club accruing intimidatingly large tabs and then dishing out ‘plastic money’.

The question remains: Is using a card meant to…
Help you control or easily monitor your expenditure?
Act merely as a status symbol?
Facilitate seemingly easier online (and offline) purchases?

Whatever the reasons, Kenyans are embracing the new consumer oriented age wholeheartedly as the number of cards in circulation rose to 9.6million in March this year, according to statistics released to the Central Bank of Kenya, and as reported in the Daily Nation.
Globally there are immense security fears that come attached to both owning and/or using a credit or debit card, and more particularly with regards to fraud. A majority of people fear giving out their details as they make purchases at places such as shopping malls, supermarkets, restaurants or online, but the banks that offer the option of owning one are moving to seal all loopholes, including shifting to new technologies such as installing chips in their cards, to curb any potential threats.
At the end of the day, it happens to be more convenient to go ‘paperless’ and plastic, though there are other viable options such as mobile money transfers that make life easier for consumers. Whatever your choice, make sure it suits your lifestyle and you are aware of safety measures or advantages.

The First Publishers To Be Listed in Kenya

The Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE) may be home to billion shilling corporates dominated by the agricultural and financial sectors, but there’s a company set to pioneer its industry and hopefully buck the monotony.

According to a Nation correspondent, Longhorn Publishers has been approved by the Capital Markets Authority (CMA) to list about 58.5 million ordinary shares at Kshs.1 each by way of introduction at the NSE. This makes it the first publishing company in Kenya to do so.
“The authority has granted approval following a review of the applicant’s documents and is satisfied that Longhorn Kenya Limited has met adequate disclosure of material information in accordance with the requirements of the Capital Markets Act and the Capital Markets (Securities)(Public Offers, Listing and Disclosures) Regulations,2002” CMA CEO Stella Kilonzo said in a statement to the media.
Longhorn Publishers specialize in educational publications especially for primary and secondary schools, but also feature novels by local authors.

Earphones Could Kill You! Here’s How…

On the long trip to your destination, on that late night bus ride home, at that boring lecture when you’re at the back of the class and when you’re taking an evening walk around the corner, your best friend would more often than not be your headphones or your earphones.

We all love listening to music, podcasts or our favourite broadcasts when we’re off the clock, but scientists have discovered that this could be a potential injury or death sentence for the unsuspecting listener.
“Everybody is aware of the risk of cell phones and texting in automobiles, but I see more and more teens distracted with the latest devices and headphones in their ears,” Dr. Richard Lichenstein, an associate professor of pediatrics at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, said in a statement to Live Science. “Unfortunately as we make more and more enticing devices, the risk of injury from distraction and blocking out other sounds increases.”
The professor, together with a team of colleagues had been conducting a series of studies on past reports and databases published between 2004 and 2011 of pedestrian injuries or fatalities on the road, with specificity to those that included the use of headphones. It’s amazing then that a whopping 70 percent of those accident cases were fatal.
Does it need much convincing then to make us realize that using headphones (or texting at that) could make you lose your life? Just last year a Kenyan minister lost his son to a terrible accident on a European street, where he was listening (rather loudly) to music on his headphones that he could not hear a descending plane, which subsequently swept him away as the aircraft made a crash landing.
Using earphones has a distractive quality in that the listener’s senses are ‘deprived’ as you become less aware of your environment. It’s therefore important that you try to stay as alert as possible and aware of your surroundings especially as you walk.

After all, who would want to lose their life over using earphones?

Tech Nite: The night that was

So last night TechNite: an event meant to facilitate the networking of techies and ICT industry players went down.

The event which was sponsored by IMAX theatres, Tropical Heat foods& Burn Energy drinks had a MenInBlack3 theme.
The MC Eddie Kimani really did a commendable job in keeping the audience participative with witty one-liners, crowd engagement techniques and humourous banter. He employed the use of group games such as Human Bingo& Charades to get the crowd as amped as they could get but given that it was a room full of techies (read geeks)… I’m not even going to touch on the stereotypes about groups of techies meeting together!
Anyway, here are some pictures from the event:

Music Maestro just brought sexy back

They are the guys that brought you the hot tune with Wyre the Love Child, ‘Feels Good’ that was a one of a kind club banger. They later came back to the music scene with the song’House Party’ that got a good reception through out the social media.

They are back, and this time they brought sexy back. This type of sexy is however entirely in the swagger category with his latest track ‘Sexy Swagger’ from Soulitary Entertainment.

They just uploaded their music ‘Sexy Swagger’ just today and we are glad to be able to share with you guys.

Have a listen to the song and give us your feedback.

Smitta throws one at Prezzo.

It is now getting really old. Teasing Prezzo left, right and center. Can’t we all just give this guy a break. Almost everyone has taken shots at the guy, some true and just, and some just sad.

But still, I have to admit, Smitta’s done a really good one on the BBA Housemate. In his section of the Pulse Magazine today, he put a caricature of prezzo saying, “For Shizzo, I am not here for the Mulla… I am a wealthy artist back in Kenya. I came to the BBA House for vacation and you are all my house helps.”

Come to think of it, it kind of sounds like Prezzo, but enough with the teases. Let’s just all support our own and have him/them come back with the mulla.

Oh, and by the way, it seems as though Prezzo and housemate Goldie might just hook up. The two seem to be having a connection that might just turn into something else. Watch this space.

There are a lot of things that you don’t know about Wyre

He is the guy behind most of the best dancehall tunes in Kenya, very influential when it comes to music talks and yet, with all the praises that goes around for him, he is also one of the most humble celebrities you can find in kenya.

Having collaborated with huge names in the music industry, and I mean international music industry, like The Morgan Heritage and Cecile, Wyre is still just warming up. His latest single, ‘Dancehall Party’ is rising fast in most charts and has proven to be a club banger as all his songs are.

Well, there are a few things that we all didn’t know about this amazing artiste. For example, did you know that he was an amazing long tennis player back in his younger days? So he says in his recent interview with the Pulse Magazine.

Check this out, Wyre does not drink, smoke or do any kind of drug. You’d think that since he does reggae music, he would also be hooked on weed (stereotype), but no! Even with all his electrifying night performances, he doesn’t even take a sip of alcohol. That’s just awesome.

Some of you may already know that he went to Dagoretti High School and that’s where he explored his talent in music.

One other thing that I am glad to know about The King of The Dancehall is that
he would never wear skinny jeans. That’s a relief!

Octopizzo in illuminati?!

Bizzarre claims from shortsighted fans about Octopizzo’s rise to stardom

As I was reading through the pulse today morning, i came across an interesting piece that claimed that some fans had questioned Octopizzo’s meteoric rise to fame &superstardom. What caught my attention is the ignorance of some of these so called fans. Thing is, Octopizzo’s rise to stardom can steadily be traced through time as he gave us hit after hit after hit after hit. With a slew of hits that boast lyrical content that tip the scale on the heavier side coupled with superb production work, a star was born.

Why are some amongst us so eager to classify the fruits of his labour as ill-gotten gains? Why is it that when we see an MC enjoying the fruits of their blood, sweat& tears we are quick to belittle their hassle? Come off the roooobbbish accusations and appreciate the lads hard work!
From “Vowels” to the recently released “Bila Mic”, lad has been consistent with the lyrical wordplay& hard hitting punchlines but now that the mainstream media has finally sat up to take notice of the talent that is Octopizzo some of us want to hate? And just what aren’t you telling us? If you know that he is in illuminati (whatever this non-existent rubbish is), just how do you know that he is a member? Are you also a member?! HMMMMMMM?! And i doubt the talented and lyrically endowed MC would sell his soul for a tv interview and 2 radio shows.
Ocopizzo, keep lifting “Numba Nane” and keep up the good work! Hope you supernova! Blow up so big that we have Kenyan born, thoroughbred grammy nominees and indeed winners!
This is just my humble opinion.

Wah! Bushman reggae concert cancelled

The much anticipated reggae concert that I spent most of my time hyping and advertising with anxiety has just been cancelled (read the Bushman article). I just can’t believe this, yet true.

Bushman was supposed to perform at the Sankara this Friday to raise funds for The March Forth Kenya Kids Foundation that teaches kids art, giving them confidence through the discovery of their various gifts and talents in the arts.

The March Forth Kids has not yet given us the reason behind the cancelation of the much anticipated charity concert.

We are looking forward to unveiling the reason considering that Bushman was more than eager to perform in Kenya. More details coming soon.

Which Kenyan Musician Would You Have Featured on Vevo?

There’s a limited crop of top musicians around the world with their music featured on the seemingly exclusive VEVO channel, available on YouTube in Kenya and other African countries, and a fewer range of artistes on the continent that can boast a dedicated channel on the site.

If you don’t have any idea what VEVO is, Wikipedia adequately describes it as:

“….a music video website. It is a joint venture (between 3 out of 4 of the ‘Big Four’ music labels in the World) Sony Music Entertainment, Universal Music Group, and Abu Dhabi Media with EMI licensing its content to the group without taking an ownership stake.”

Well, a few African musicians can boast about having VEVO channels, with a majority of those few either South African or Nigerian. The latest addition to the VEVO stable was D’Banj who was confirmed at the end of March 2012.

VEVO.com is however only available in the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, though it had planned to have a worldwide launch this year, but failed to roll out citing licensing issues.

Does this mean then that music has to be of some consistent quality to be featured on VEVO. There’s no secret that Nigerian superstars are doing collabos with American artistes such as Akon and Snoop Dogg and this could be a contributing factor to their music earning placements on VEVO. The channel has millions of subscribers and thus would be a gold field for artistes looking to build their brand.

Advantages of being on VEVO include reaping greater revenue from your music as the advertising rates on the channel are of a greater premium. All that VEVO may require then of you would be a strong fan base adn reputable industry contacts.

The most important thing to note though would be that the industry is increasingly being driven by digital sales in comparison to say vinyl and CDs as has been the case for quite awhile.

The service was launched officially on December 8, 2009.The videos on Vevo are syndicated across the web, with Google and Vevo sharing the advertising revenue.

Do you think there’s any Kenyan musician who should be featured on VEVO?

Hot new music from up& coming artist Blunts Don Gotti

Recently got my mitts on some hot track by an underground artist whom i have the pleasure of introducing…

So Blunts is a young rapper on his come up who has teamed up with a wicked production team that has blessed him with some banging instrumentals that are heavy on the violins but *and now this is where the genius is* the beats are anything but fruity!
The lyrics are party lyrics which go well with the uptempo instrumentals with BRILLIANT violin bits involved! Whoever did the beats is a genius& the rapper is talent. my advice is that you download the track and play it while on the dunda or while headed to the rave.

all you DJs looking for Kenyan music to play had better sit up &take note of this kid! have a listen…

Uhuru files a suit against the Star newspaper

Deputy Prime Minister Uhuru Kenyatta is suing Radio Africa’s newspaper the Star for publishing a

story on April 24th linking him to Joseph Thuo who is allegedly accused of plotting to assassinate former mungiki leader MainaNjenga.

In the filed suit, Uhuru claims that the story was meant to portray him as a thug who will do anything to anyone who tries to prevent him from attaining the presidency.

The DPM wants the court to issue an injunction restraining the Star newspaper from publishing  anything linking him with Thuo or any other hate speech concerning him because it’s a violation of his right.

The Star news paper confirmed that they are yet to receive the suit

Top 10 Entertainment Performers in Kenya

LIVE performance may be an art that some of the artists in Kenya may have forgotten, but by international consensus, these performances have become a necessity for a broad range of artists looking to push their profit margins as well as get their music and brand firmly imprinted in new and old fans loyalties.

In modern times, a majority of musicians have become ‘studio’ artists, with sounds that only turn out great when recorded and modified to give out a final product. What listeners appreciate though are versatile artists who can deliver both excellent vocal and visual quality in and out of the studio. Thus, this art is what differentiates the legendary from the average.

WTH! He really got stuck inside the cheating wife!

I’m still trying to figure out who’s to blame in this scenario. It’s really twisted how the woman cheats on the guy, and even more twisted how the husband allegedly brought witchcraft into this matter.

The police or residents might just have yelled “Freeze!” when they busted the two lovers, because that’s just what happened to the little guy. He couldn’t budge. Kennedy and Muthoni never saw this coming. Hahaha. I know this is supposed to be sad news but I can’t stop myself from laughing so hard.

What’s even worse, the police had to ask, “Kijana habari? Iko shida gani tukusaidie?” If it were you at that position, what would you have answered the cops.

This is however just a biological matter and it’s even sadder that the police didn’t know about it (the condition).

Check out the hilarious yet sad video below.

Rapper Nasty Thomas considers himself a very lucky man after Monday’s incident in Westlands. With the speed that all these buildings are being erected nowadays, it’s no wonder they keep coming down one after the other.

On Monday, 7Th this month, a building on School Lane, Westlands collapsed abruptly, damaging the apartments next to it. Nasty Thomas is one of the residents in the apartments and was luckily uninjured. Everybody else in the apartments came out of the horrifying incident safe. BBA news: Brothers, Malonza and Alex falling for the same girl?

This will definitely turn out to be one of the most interesting BBA seasons ever. Drama already ensued between Prezzo and South Africa’s Barbs, and Prezzo just had to play the money card, “if it’s $300,000 she wants, she must talk to me nicely and I’ll hook her up!” Well, its good that he’s still his typical self.

Over to the DownVille house, I’m smelling some family drama on the way from our very own Kenyan brothers, Malonza and Alex. I think they might just be falling for the same girl, Junia from Namibia.

On the 6Th, Alex kissed with Junia. Yes, interesting. On the 7Th, Malonza and the same girl got quite comfortable on his bed, opening up about their love life and family. Now, I’m a little bit concerned. What’s even worse, Junia seems to be open and free with all the guys at the house. Could this be the first relationship drama in the BBA 2012?

Malonza with Junia

I certainly hope that this won’t cause any drift between our two brothers. Good thing is that they are extremely close, and I hope this lady won’t come between them. Keep it Ghafla! for more update.

Kwani?

So, if you are a creative, a poet or you just love seeing creatives do their thing creatively, Why weren’t you at Kwani?

Kwani hosted their monthly open mic event on Tuesday@ Club Sound and the show was graced by acts such as Anto Neosoul, Man Njoro, Checkmate (who was the headline act), Cindy Ogana and Kenneth B.

For starters, Cindy was an awesome MC as she was always thinking on her feet (seriously, nothing caught her off-guard) and her wit was razor sharp. She opened the event with an impromptu piece for her friend Winnie Nkunda of the Boomba Girls fame. *side note* Why don’t people in the entertainment industry age? Winnie hasn’t aged a day since we saw her in Nonini’s video “Manzi wa Nairobi”!

Anto Neosoul then came on stage and 1st dedicated the pieces he’d be doing to Maya Angelou then to all the mothers and indeed women in attendance. He did pieces by Maya but he owned them, putting alot of himself into the pieces to make them relatable and more organic. I have to make note of how eclectic oi think the lad is and versatile too seeing as he made Maya Angelou sound like she were a Kenyan Poet/Writer writing about Kenyan situations. Goodstuff!

Man Njoro was next on stage and he did his signature piece 1st (to sate public demand) then went into pieces that were newer& fresher and that had me wondering why we bemoan lack of talent in our entertainment industry. Maybe the problem is that said talent isn’t mainstream. All things said& done, this guy can spit mad flame! He did a beatboxing piece with Checkmate called “Streetfight’ that was simply a madness!

Kenneth was next on stage and he did a funny yet sublime piece on a girl cheating on her college-kid boyfriend that had me chuckling under my breath all through his performance. Real funny dude but you have to have an IQ way above average and a good understanding of Sheng (street lingo) to get the humour. Luckily these 2 requirements were in abundance in the audience.

Jemedari was next on stage and i have to admit that at 1st his demure demeanour& pressed suit (more like a shirt& dress pants) were out of place &i was apprehensive at 1st about what he’d do but when he took the mic, it was like he was touched by Apollo himself! He did a revolutionary piece that stirred the inner soldier in everyone in the audience which even the most hardcore hater must admit is no mean feat!

then came the feature artist Checkmate and he did some poetry, starting with a piece he did when he first started out: nostalgia it seems caught up with this lad. he then rapped some of his pieces, freestyled, beatboxed and even did a piece he’d written on the fly off his phone which suprisingly was the best piece of all. The one word that describes this lad is multitalented! I personally feel we need more poets in the rap game to put an end to the mind numbing drivel alot of artists put out under the guise of music.

A certain lad from Uganda came on stage next and *conspiratory whisper* I suspect he did a piece for the benefit of my colleague Kone but those are my thoughts& they do not represent Ghafla’s. But it was still funny as hell watching Kone uncomfortably shift in his seat which had turned into a hot seat.

Anto came back on stage and did his thing shortly before Miss Kenya-America Wambui came and did a piece on a lass from South Africa who had bleached herself and was proudly parading herself on the Drum issue of (i forget when). The thing i liked about this final piece is that it didn’t castigate the folly of this lass which admittedly i’d have done but rather it sought to understand her actions. Unique perspective.

Anyway, here are some of the sights from Kwani which you should make a point to attend!
