Ghafla! Movies This Weekend – 3rd August, 2012

Kenyans finally got the chance to join the rest of the world in experiencing the spectacle that is The Dark Knight Rises. The film broke the opening weekend record for highest grossing 2-D film the week before it got its African release. The IMAX at XX Century was packed, a reflection of the anticipation the film had drawn all around the world. And of course the cash, too.

Despite the film being 2-D, for some reason, IMAX still charged the usual Kshs. 800. But it was worth every cent. The film will continue to play at the IMAX with showtimes at 11:45 a.m., 2:50 p.m., 6:50 p.m. and 11:50 p.m. You still have time to catch The Amazing Spiderman in 3-D if you missed it earlier at the IMAX at 9:15 a.m.

You can alternatively watch TDKR at Fox Cineplex at Sarit, Planet Media at Westgate, Star Flix at Prestige and Village Market, where it will play throughout the day. The Amazing Spiderman also shows at the same times at the same venues.

The last two people in the country who still haven’t watched The Avengers can catch it at Fox Capital Center at 2:30 p.m. and at Planet Media at Westgate at 2:40 p.m. Courageous continues to show at Fox Capital Center at 6:00 p.m.

Away from the testosterone-filled offerings, Fox Capital Center and Planet Media at Westgate will be showing Think Like A Man. The movie features Michael Ealy, Jerry Ferrara, Meagan Good, Regina Hall and comedian Kevin Hart among others. The two-hour romantic comedy will play in the evening shows.movies - dark knight

If you are looking for family-friendly entertainment, two animated films are still showing in screens around the city: Ice Age: Continental Drift and Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted. Ice Age will show at Fox Cineplex Sarit at 11:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., Planet Media at Westgate at 11:30 a.m., 1:30 p.m., 3:30 p.m., 5:30 p.m. and 7:20 p.m. and at Star Flix Prestige at 10:10 a.m., 12:15 p.m. and 2:15 p.m.

Madagascar 3 will show at Fox Cineplex Sarit at 2:30 p.m., Star Flix Prestige at 10:15 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. and at Star Flix at Village Market at 10:00 a.m., 12:15 p.m., 2:30 p.m. and 4:45 p.m. Have a great weekend at the movies.

TPF villain judge taking on ‘The Bench’ tonight

He is the TPF judge that we all love to hate. We also enjoy to think of him as the show’s villain, and so do the contestants and fellow judges.

Let’s just be real for a moment though, if it wasn’t for TPF judge Ian Mbugua and Mich, this show wouldn’t be as interesting as it usually is (away from the artistes). Secretly, he is in-fact my favorite judge. That however, does not change the fact that he can be a real pain in the neck sometimes.

Tonight, Jeff Koinange will host the ‘compliment stingy’ judge Ian on his popular show, ‘The Bench’ and I have a feeling that this will be a very interesting and entertaining interview. I personally can’t wait because I’d love to hear why he was so grumpy when Ruth Matete won this season’s TPF.

As you anticipate for tonight’s interview, please keep the below video in mind.

Come catch Rabbit’s exclusive performance tomorrow

This is the only guy who makes it cool to have an animal’s name (oh, him and Snoop Lion). His rise in the Kenyan music industry is yet another music success story that upcoming artistes can cling on as they struggle in this tough music business.

Rabbit aka Kaka Sungura has lately been one of the biggest hip hop names in Kenya and is constantly growing his fan base across Africa with his hip hop tracks and creative spoken word pieces.

Rabbit will be performing tomorrow (4Th of August) at Club Legend (along Baricho Road) from 8PM to midnight. The show which will be sponsored by, and part of the ‘Nokia: Don’t Break The Beat’ project will have absolutely free entrance. This is a really generous treat considering Rabbit’s epic performances, so if you miss it you’ll have no one to blame but yourself.

See you there.

Part 4: How Quincy Tried To Sabotage Esther Arunga’s Relationship With Friends

Not long after arriving in Dubai, Quincy Timberlake had already putting a wedge between Esther Arunga and the good samaritan who was hosting the couple and their child in the middle eastern country. Quincy’s pettiness was just about to be unleashed.

After The Friend organized for Esther’s hair to be done, Esther approached Quincy to pay the salonist. Quincy refused, saying he only has 100 dirhams. Esther had no choice but to–once again–go back to her host for the cash. The Friend did not have money on her at the time.

As she was explaining this, Quincy started shouting at Esther, explaining to her that they had no friends in the house, and that they were in the situation alone. All this despite the fact that The Friend had constantly helped and even kept them and their family in her house. He tearfully urged to Esther to stop depending on their hosts.

This time, The Friend fought back: “I have just paid your tickets, sent you money three times when you were in Kenya. I am paying for my education, I gave you cash when you came.” If I don’t have cash to pay the hairdresser, does that make me stop being your pal? More so, did we agree that I would pay for your hair?”

Esther had no choice but to apologize for her husband because he had totally refused to take back what he had said. Apparently, Quincy, who had just gotten a job at in Deira, had been bragging to other people and flossing his cash. But when it came to responsibilities around the house, he maintained stingyness.

Next, we will detail how Quincy stressed his hosts, pushing them on the edge, even making the Friend’s husband fear for his life. You can follow the story from here.

Camp Mulla set to endorse Pepsi?

Talk about aiming for bigger and better things!

While everyone was laughing and giving their opinions on how these guys performed their TPF performance, they have been silent and focussing on their grind and their focus and vision seems to be paying off as they are now linked to an endorsement deakl with Pepsi.

CAMP MULLA
According to grace Kerongo of the star, Mohamed Khamis of SBC Kenya which holds tha franchise for Pepsi told press that the company is eyeing the teen market and Camp Mulla are seen as the most relevant vehicle with which to push the brand.
I reiterate: talk about bigger and better things for the kings of the Cool Kidz! The move would have them joining the ranks of Beckham, Messi et al as brand ambassadors.

That is what uncle Chim Tuna calls a really good look!

What Can Prezzo Buy With 300,000 dollars?

300,000 dollars at the current exchange rate translates to about 25,000,000 Kenya shillings. Yes… WHOA! That sort of money can drive a broke lad crazy. But Prezzo isn’t broke at all, so I know he’ll handle himself well with this gold mine.

Still, I can’t help but think, what can Prezzo buy with this amount of mulla? In-fact, what can’t he buy? Knowing how flashy and extravagant Prezzo is, we looked around to find some cool toys he could acquire. Don’t be surprised at all if he actually goes for these stuff.

1. A Lamborghini Gallardo – $198,000

Lamborghini Gallardo GT

He might actually just be the first guy in the country to have one of these babies. Unfortunately, he will only be able to enjoy it in his compound and motor shows given how low it is.

2. A house in Mtwapa – $213, 776

He will finally get to live that holiday life that we all dream of. Every single day.

3. A Princess yacht – $165, 549

Find a Boat

With this beautiful and luxurious baby, you could even give up your house and still live better than the next guy.

4. An undeveloped Private Island – ($64, 000-$200, 000)

An entire land just for the Prezzident. Hell, he can even have his own CMB constitution.

5. A club in Westlands – Ksh. 10 million

According to rumors from the recent sale of Rezorus, you can get this kind of club by appromiximately that ammount of cash.

What would you do with this kind of mulla?

One of the Best Unknown Groups Right Now. Have a Listen

They are an alternative hip hop, pop, alternative music group from Nairobi. The quartet consists of G’Zay (Daryll Mbugua), AtwalMusic (Atwal Adwok), Phaze (Sammy Wamae) and Flaev (Favour Obasi Ike). They call themselves Wryterz Block.

The group was conceived by G’Zay who came up with the name and brought the other members together. The group initially did two singles, I Am and Hands Up. The latter was included on Favours album, Colorful Sounds, which was released in late 2011. The track was, unfortunately, poorly received by critics.

The group later met Atwal who was was initiated as a group member as the working relationship grew. An interview with Homeboyz Radio’s Monique Kabuye on her Afro-Central show helped the group grow their fan-base and achieve a certain level of popularity after two of their singles (Undisputed and So Special) were played on air.

As a result, they got to work with a slew of other upcoming artistes including Khaliba & Shontell. Wryterz Block then started working on their mixtape, for which they released Dance as the first single. This time, the group got some love. Dance was very well received when it debuted on Afro-Central.

Immediately after Dance’s release, one of the group’s members, Njoki, left the crew due to personal issues. They are still going strong, though. Wryterz Block is now poised to release a second single off their yet-to-be-named mixtape on the 3rd of August.

In the meantime, you can listen to the group’s earlier release, So Special below.

This might just be the next Kenyan hip hop lady. Check her out

She goes by the name of Baby T and she is about to drop into the Kenyan music scene with a bang. Actually she already did a track (Queens) with her fellow female rapper know as Latisha and it was equally hot.

She is now back, but on her own with her very own mixtape. Just like Stella Mwangi and Xtatic, she has that sexy gangster swag to her flow and the lyrics are already attractive as it is.

It is about time more female rappers took the industry by storm. I’m loving this progress. Listen to the track below.

Check out the new look Epic Nation shirts

By now we all know that DJ Creme de la Creme has a clothing line aye?

Well he has introduced some new look tshirts that are something else! The shirts were good to begin with but now he’s decided to turn things up just to keep it fresh.

And he has clearly disproved the adage that when it aint broke, don’t fix it. Just peep the new designs…

Chiwawa & Abbas Remix Drake, Kanye, Lil’ Wayne’s “Forever”

Chiwawa is back in the game. This time he does a remix over a Drake track. Forever is the popular Drake, Kanye West, Lil’ Wayne and Eminem track.

Chiwawa has been in the industry for a while and has three albums to show for it. Besides that, he has a number of mixtapes. He won a CHAT Award for best new artiste back when he came out heavy in the mid 2000s. He is now one of the directors of Sporadia Entertainment.

In the Forever remix, he features perennial collaborator, Abbas who also spits some sick lines on the Boi-1da track that has been reused numerous times by rappers. In fact, it was originally used by Kardinal Offishall before Drake. Check out Abbas and Chiwawa’s treatment below.

DEAR BIGTUNES ENT.: I don’t plan on going for your Tarrus concert, but here’s how you can change my mind

It is a well known fact that Kenya has an extremely poor record of hosting reggae events. Rowdyness, drug abuse and theivery are commonplace at these gatherings, and that is why, despite my love for Tarrus Riley, I have not yet made a point of ensuring that I attend his concert in Kenya, which Big Tunes Live Entertainment is organising.

However, I’m an open minded chap, and here’s what it would take for me to have a change of heart on my decision:

1. Provide adequate security outside the ground

During the recent Alaine concert, I had the misfortune of being ROBBED WITH VIOLENCE just as I got to the venue (Carnivore). That occurence left a big scar in my heart, especially the pain of being within touching distance of Alaine, but not being able to see her because of some unscrupulous thugs at the Carnivore entrance.

2. Provide adequate security INSIDE the ground

This goes without saying. At a concert like Tarrus’s, there will be those who snuck through the fence with no money, but the full intention of deriving a profit at the end of the night. Such buggers are known to be towards the centre of the adoring crowd, and sometimes are even heartless enough to go for those in the front line who are enjoying themselves the most. BigTunes Live ENT., be one step ahead of these guys; put security in the middle of the crowd.

3. Clamp down on drug abuse, especially weed

Some of us honestly don’t smoke that stuff, and neither do we intend to in the near future. Don’t let the revellers get away with doing it in the open, and forcing the rest of us to inhale second hand smoke the whole night. It’s not cool.

Kenya’s reggae guru, Shamir, unleashes a new hot track

It is really really catching and original to see a Kenyan reggae artist record his song without trying to force the Jamaican accent on himself (no offence to anyone).

Shamir does that just perfectly and quite frankly, he has never disappointed in his tracks. Remember his first track, ‘On Fire’? This was basically his breakthrough track that got him respect from acknowledged Jamaican artistes and other international artistes as well.

Shamir’s latest track is titled ‘Treat her like a lady’, and yes, he is still on that romantic vibe. Just like ‘on fire’, this track is blazing hot.

From Mama Africa Riddim, I give you Shamir’s latest work, ‘TREAT HER LIKE A LADY’.

Alex now wants to work with Prezzo!

In what seems to be a complete turn around from his previous actions;

Alex Mgash of BBA fame has announced that he wants to work with Prezzo. Afterall, Alex wants to get into the entertainment industry and who better to take him under his wing than the same lad he put up for eviction twice?

I just don’t get it but in a recent interview with Grace Kerongo of the Star, Alex said he intends top keep in line with younger brother malonza’s intent to join the entertainment industry.

I for one wish him luck in all his future endeavours but i suspect that his immediate interest will be a hard sell for fellow Kenyans.

These are the 5 hottest young producers to watch out for!

I have always asserted that the youngins, the Cool Kidz are taking over in every way shape and form.

And apart from musical and vocal prowess, they are proving me right even through their production work. It actually makes sense since necessity is the mother of invention and these guys had to begin production because they couldn’t afford the obscenely high cost of getting their material produced.
And here are the top 5 best producers who rep the Cool Kidz;- and a word of warning to the big industry players, these guys WILL take over! It’s just a matter of time!
I have taken wwhat i believe to be their best work and used it as an example. Most are unkown as yet but that doesn’t take away from the fact that they are good at what they do.

#5 Raj -Stomp on ’em
Just have a listen to his track to understand what i’m talking about. This lad even has his own record label called Music Bank so you should all sit up and pay attention to this one right here!

#4 Dora – Oyela
What can i say about this 17yr old lass? Nothing! All that i can say would dilute what her work would say!
{youtube}ihsS95GaSSw{/youtube}

#3 Sanjei -I Like The Way You Move
<this track is embedded at the end of the article>
Aye, this lad is good. And he has even mentored another producer (Dora) on the list which is a noteworthy action because alot of the old dogs have refused to do so.

#2 K tha Great -Africa’s Calling
Yup! This youngin did Bamboo’s hot new track and if you’ve heard it then you know that he had to be on the list! Just listen to the track and you’ll understand why he’s on one!

#1 K’Cous -S.O.S (Smoking on that Sour)
This lad takes the cake because he has been consistent when it comes to giving us hits and they have all proved to be club banger (the work he’s done for Camp Mulla atleast).

Kenyans Need To Stop Voting For Prezzo

Ever since Prezzo made it to the finals of Big Brother Africa stargame, Kenyans have been voting for him incessantly, led by none other than Prime Minister Raila Odinga. However, considering how the voting works, this is a suboptimal tactic that won’t help Prezzo much in his quest for the ultimate victory.

Let me explain what I mean. Big Brother Africa employs a ‘voting block’ system to avoid unfairness towards countries with large populations, e.g Nigeria. This means that Big Brother simply takes each country as one vote towards whoever wins in that country. So however many times we vote for Prezzo in Kenya, it will only count as one vote from the whole of Kenya in the grand scheme of things.

Given that the contestants who are left are pretty much guaranteed to win in their home countries, Kenyans trying to vote for Prezzo as much as they can are indulging in a futile effort. Prezzo is 100% sure to win the Kenya vote. What will REALLY help Prezzo’s chances of victory, is if Kenyans somehow convinced other countries to vote for the prezzident. Preferably countries who’s representatives have already been ejected from the competition, like Tanzania, Sierra Leone and the like.

But how can Kenyans convince people across the border, you ask?

The answer is: social media. Especially Twitter.

If Kenyans were to start a number of trending topics on popular hashtags, such as #stargame , it is possible to alert people from all over Africa as to how serious the ‘Prezzo agenda’ is. Hopefully they will get aboard the ‘Prezzo train’ and help him amass the swing votes from other countries.

WHOA! Q-Tasi takes shots at Jua Cali. Could this be the latest beef?

So, the building beef between Jua Cali and Q-Tasi has just escalated. You remember how Jua Cali came out hard on the social media accusing Q-Tasi and singer, Kendi of being the laziest artistes that Calif Records has ever worked with? Q-Tasi has finally replied to this accusations and we now know that this is no joke.

Although Q-Tasi tried his best to be diplomatic about this, there was no hiding that he was pissed off by Jua Cali’s allegations, and so he also went H.A.M.

We even brought in 1FM’s lovely Tina Kaggia to handle this Ghafla interview. How else were we going to sieve out this juicy information seeing that he (Q-Tasi) was kind of reluctant on this matter.

Anyway, Q-Tasi came out strong on the beef and laid it on the table like it is, saying that should Jua Cali keep coming at him like he is right now, things will no longer be pretty. It’s hot in here. Check it out.

This is the best and most honest freestyle so far

I’ve seen many cyphers and lots of freestyle battles (those that have videos on YouTube). The Cyphers are awesome and most of the freestyle sessions that we see, are not exactly freestyled, but this… this is something else.

What I love most about this ‘cypher’ is the fact that it is actually a fresstyle session. No written lyrics at all and you can actually tell if you are a hip hop head. Minimum but hard hitting punch lines here and there make this ‘Room 16 Cypher 1‘ one of the realest we’ve ever seen.

With rappers K47, Khaligraph Jones and Moroko, you are assured to be lyrically entertained right here, no doubt. Check this out.

The single was first released on Capital FM, exclusively on radio. It was released online the following week, and last week, the video release date was moved to 3rd August.

Check out more of the pics here.

Q-Tasi admits that being broke was the inspiration to ‘Narudi Ocha’

Remember Q-Tasi‘s breakthrough song, ‘Narudi Ocha‘? Yeah, it was quite theatrical and entertaining. We just loves it. But what exactly inspired him to do this awesome song? Some say that it was generally the economy, but we beg to differ.

Q-Tasi fell victim to the charms of 1FM’s cute presenter, Tina Kaggia in our recent Ghafla Interview and let down his guard. In the process, he let out the real inspiration to his biggest tune.

Tina coincidentally dropped by just as we were about to interview Q-Tasi and we successfully convinced her to take it over and as you will see, she did it perfectly.

Check out the interview below.

Photo Gallery: MusikMaestro’s ‘House Party’ video shoot (behind the scenes)

These are some of the artistes that are making Kenya proud by every song they record. MusikMaestro has been in the music industry for quite a while and have been doing huge stuff music wise.

Their latest track, ‘House party’ which is destined to be a major club banger has already been completed and so has the video. Although it hasn’t been launched yet (the video), we have some pics that will give you an idea of what to expect from this awesome work. Check these out.

Prezzo threatens Keagan with an empty beer bottle

Prezzo feels that Keagan has tested him enough and that it is time to set things straight. This time, Prezzo is willing to go all the way. It’s a good thing though that he remembered what’s at stake before doing anything stupid.

All these started with the heated fight between Prezzo and Talia. After all the insults were issued to the respective persons, Talia went to the bedroom to cry the night off. Prezzo, being tipsy and all, then pounced at Keagan telling him that he shouldn’t be defending Talia because she doesn’t love him at all. That her heart is for Seidou and he has no chance with her.

Keagan laughed every blow away from Prezzo and this really angered the Masai Warrior. As Keagan was having fun with our beloved intoxicated representative, Prezzo was boiling with anger. It even reached a point that Prezzo grabbed an empty beer bottle and charged at Keagan. Biggie did not wait for the fight to go any further and so he called Prezzo to the diary room, but all in vain.

Check it out.

Prezzo and Talia have a heated fight

Last night was just full of drama and it all revolved around Prezzo. At first, it was a very  sombre night as everyone was bored and going about their businesses. When the alcohol started to kick into some of the housemates, things got a little rough.

We all love Prezzo but we also know how he gets when he is drunk. Last night was no different. Prezzo started telling Talia and Keagan that they should give up on their box task since they’ve taken so long on it. Talia did not take this politely and had to stand her ground, telling Prezzo that she is not Goldie and that she won’t take that kind of talk from him. It is at this point that Prezzo went hard on the Keagan-Talia relationship, saying that they have nothing together and that Seydou is watching and waiting.

What followed next was exchange of abuse that simply cannot be put in context. You’ll just have to watch this video to get it all.

Epic! Documentary on South African singer Spoek Mathambo and Sauti Sol’s EP now available

Sauti Sol are undoubtedly the biggest band in Kenya right now. Having concerts all over the world and actually thrilling their audiences in each and every performance has made them some what of an international band. Even though their fans from abroad may not understand the Swahili language (which is used in most of their songs), their voices are just breathtaking and there is no turning back once you hear it. That much is evident.

Recently, South African celebrated singer and producer, Spoek Mathambo came to Kenya with one main agenda. To make an EP with our beloved Sauti Sol. The combination of these five sensational singers cannot fail to humble you down. Just like the wind, this EP will contain music that will blow/carry you  away.

A leading videographer known as Lebogang Rasethaba learnt about this epic collaboration and could just not miss it. Better yet, he was thoughtful enough to know that the rest of the world would also not want to miss this awesome creation. This is why he created this beautiful documentary titled ‘Voices Of The Sun‘ that was shot through the entire ten days that the EP was recorded. The documentary takes us through the entire sessions of the EP creation with these talented musicians.

Check out the documentary below.
