6:AM Entertainment Presents EarthDance 2012

Earth Dance is roight around the corner and we are all excited!

Well, if you aren’t, i am! I’m all a-tingle with excitement. And thus far, the details that are up on 6AM ENTERTAINMENT’s Facebook Page, they have announed the following details:
Earthdance Nairobi 2012 (will be held at) at Masai Lodge near Rongai (by “near Rongai” they mean somewhere in Kitengela) and will feature performances by D-Nox & Beckers (Official) (Germany), Lady Lea (South Africa), Mikhail Kuzi, DJ Drazen, Dj barney barrow, DJ K, Max Melesi, FoOzak & Franki B, Beng-Beng, Sean Fraser, Jack Rooster, Sebastian, and Broken Switch (South Africa).
Decor will be done by PsynOpticz Productions (South Africa). As yet however there are no details on the ticket but said info will be out soon.

Kaka Sungura joins the clothing line race

Octopizzo, Jua Cali, DJ Creme, they have all done. They have all attempted to make money from their names, music and fame by printing them out on T-Shirts and other merchandise.

Milking every cent out of their sweat, that’s the real hustle right there. We get to look good in these guys’ clothing lines and it’s a good thing that their productions actually have swag.

Rabbit aka Kaka Sungura is the latest artiste to join this business that’s making every other artist create labels and titles for their own. Rabbit’s clothing is now known as ‘Kaka Klothing’ and the T-shirts are already available in the streets of Nairobi for only Sh. 700.

Guess what? You can even get free deliver in Nairobi CBD through this line 0722946330.

Get your Kaka Klothing right now. Check this out.

24 Hours Left: Download the Nairobi Half Life Soundtrack for Free

The new gangster film, Nairobi Half Life is being lauded for the writing, direction, performances and the soundtrack. From the opening Five Steps of Death and To Live & Die in Eastleigh, the soundtrack is one of the best ones I’ve listened to.

If you haven’t seen the film, you will like it. Those who have, will love it since they get the context. The soundtrack features an eclectic mix of artistes from Just-A-Band to P-Unit to Alai K. The original soundtrack was done by Tom Tykwer collaborator, Xaver von Treyer, who also worked on the Soul Boy soundtrack.

Good news: you can get the soundtrack for free from Soundcloud. The bad news is you have limited time. The full original soundtrack album has been online for almost two weeks for free. From tomorrow, it will only be available for purchase. So, you can download the Nairobi Half Life here…if you want it for free, that is.

Here is the tracklist:
Five Steps of Death
Village Vibes
Kenyan Spartans
Hodi Nairobi (featuring P-Unit)
Welcome to Nairobi Dub
The Can
Cry Wolf Hatari Dub
Half Life
Fight Scene
To Live & Die in Eastleigh

Three more songs might be added to the list, probably the Just-A-Band and Alai K songs which are not listed in the purchase version. The OST only includes original music (duh!), so it does not have Just-A-Band and Alai K tracks.

Check out Nairobi Half Life at the Planet Media Cinemas at Westgate at 3:20 p.m. and 7:20 p.m. for Kshs. 350 on weekdays and Kshs. 450 on weekends.

Is This The Next Big Thing on TV after Churchill Live?

After becoming disgruntled by the mismanagement of the Crazy Monday comedy nites held at Hilton hotel every first Friday of the month, comedian and former Radio Maisha presenter Mshamba quit the standard group owned radio station.

It now emerges that Mshamba and other like-minded comedians (Jalang’o and Otoyo) hosting the upcoming show are headed to Citizen TV. Mshamba is expected to host Kenya Kona Komedy nites, which will be held every first Monday of the month (note the dates). The three had even sued the Mombasa-road based media house late last month.

kenya kona komedy 2
Kenya Kona Komedy nites will be televised on Citizen TV as the station will offer them a good pay and more audience for their comedy show. Mshamba, Otoyo and Jalang’o are promising Kenyans a lot of laughter in the new upcoming show and have recruited 18 other upcoming comedians with whom they have been working with for approximately 10 month.

Unbelievable! Matasia Star’s new music video is already the most viewed

Matasia Star’s Jackiwa is back again and this time, it crazier than the last. She first blew up in the music industry with her song, ‘Life History’ which went viral some few days after release on YouTube.

It seems this lady knows her way around viral content as she has clearly shown with all her tracks and videos. I was walking to the office the other day and was surprised to hear Jackiwa’s ‘Life History’ playing so loudly from a cab. I thought her music was only viral on YouTube, but it turns out that it is actually very popular even in the streets.

Though she leaves in Britain, Jackiwa was in the country some few days back and we even managed to get an interview with her. Get the interview here.

This was after she released her latest track, ‘Wacha stress’ which is currently also going viral. The music and video both lie under the same category, PROBOX. ‘Wacha Stress’ contains the very interesting dances and lyrics that are always abundant in Jackiwa’s songs. The song is currently the most viewed video on YouTube with 12, 111 hits and counting.

Whatever the reasons of her music going viral are, fact is, she has her game on lock. I have to say though, the lyrics to this track are even much more hilarious than her previous track.

Check it out below.

Move Over, Wiz Khalifa! Kenya’s Own Weed Rapper

Looks like Uneek is boxing himself in as a weed rapper. If you have listened to Camp Mulla’s S.O.S, he’s the guy with the memorable, “f*****g like I’m trying to have babies” line.

His debut in the local hip hop scene was his appearance on the 254low Cypher with ‘Mulla and Octopizzo among others. He was born in the U.S. but he has decided to pursue a music career in his native country, Kenya.

Stay tuned for more from the rapper. He is already working on his mixtape, Coming To The Muthaland, which is set out to come out real soon. From the title, it sounds like it’s going to be about the rapper’s new experience in the country, but going on what I’ve heard from him so far, I won’t be shocked if it’s all about grass.

Have a listen to Uneek’s Smokin’ Like A Rasta below.

SkyLuxx throws back to school party tonight

I know this is meant to be the party that ends the school holidays for the young students and all, but personally, I am celebrating this time because these kids are finally going back to school.

No more bumping into your nephews in the clubs and unfortunate incidents of the sort. This being their last night out, it is indeed going to be an awesome one and SkyLuxx will definitely see to that.

The event dubbed ‘Back To School Midnight Madness’ will be happening tonight (September 6Th) at the SkyLuxx Lounge.

Presented by Ace Cards Entertainment, on the decks will be DJ Stretch, playing the best of music all night long. Entry goes for only Sh. 200.

Is Kenya Ready For Sex Aunties on TV?

Have you ever wondered why Ugandan lasses are well cultured and always thought to be the best home-makers compared to the rest of their East African counterparts?   Well, the secret lies in “sengas” AKA sex aunties. “Sengas” are women aged 50 and above who nurture the girls into responsible women… Not only are they taught about how to treat their men right but also are taught about matters of the bedroom.

One lady has for some time now been playing the role of a “senga” to Kenyan women on TV. Meet Getrude Mungai, one of the most popular and sought after sex aunties in Kenya. She is without a doubt the most respected sex- aunty in Kenya, having had a popular weekly newspaper column in the “Eve Woman Pullout” on the Sunday Standard Newspaper.

connect
Getrude prefers to be called a “lifestyle designer” on sex and relationships, and not just a “sex aunty”.  Co-hosting a weekly TV- show that has gained so much ground in Kenya, the show gives viewers a chance to ask her questions on sex, sex positions and relationships. Responding to critics who have continued to question her show, Gertrude has this for you: “You can never say you have learnt everything there is about sex!”

With a book (The Modern Sexy Woman) and two sex DVDS out; Getrude is not relenting in her quest. She even hosts bridal showers and for this you’ll have to fork out KSH. 20,000 and more and just so you know she is not remorseful about it. You can catch Getrude on K24 on Fridays and Saturdays from 10PM.

So, folks what do you think about sex aunties on your TV screens?

Jemedari Goes Hard in His New Track

Jemedari is taking the new suit thing seriously. He has appeared in Suits & Mics, poetry and hip hop showcase at Club Soundd. We also saw him in a suit at the Martha Karua secretariat launch where he was reading poetry.

Looks like the look has rubbed off on him. In his new video for his latest track, Uliza Uambiwe, he wears one through the entire length of the clip. It is a hard-hitting bragaddocio track where Jemedari talks up his rap skills.

This might just be Jemedari’s best track. He goes hard, and his rhymes are solid. “Uliza uambiwe nani king, nani anafanyanga big thing, nani anaipeleka more higher?/Uliza uambiwe nani noma, nani better, wala si the former, nakuja na more fire,” goes the chorus.

Uliza Uambiwe was produced by Reign Muziq while the video was done by Mavecta Films, who has worked with Jemedari before on his video for the Drake sampled, I’m On One. Check out Uliza Uambiwe below.

Update: Why Nonini Hasn’t Been Able to Set Up Conjestina’s Paybill Number Yet

Yesterday, we learnt that Nonini cleared Conjestina Achieng’s rent arrears. But he wanted to do more. He had said he is working on a paybill account for a fund to be put up to aid the boxer.

At the end of the day, we still couldn’t get the paybill number. The rapper couldn’t secure the number yesterday, and he explained why:

I have been chasing a paybill number from Safaricom the whole day, but I need Conje’s father to be a signatory to the account to which the funds will be channeled for accountability purposes! He [The father] is mashinani so we have to wait for him to check in kesho. As soon as this is out, the country will have it…PAMOJACONJE2012

Interview: One of the Most Gangster Characters On Kenyan Film Talks About Working On Nairobi Half Life

He will surely go down as one of the most memorable characters in Kenyan film history. Oti is a seasoned gangster, but without the usual thuggish sensibilities. He shows compassion and a level-headedness you don’t expect from such a brutish character.

We owe the foundation to the writing, the depiction and execution, though, goes to Olwenya Maina. When Mwas travels to the city and finds the Nairobi he didn’t expect, Oti is the one who takes him through the “real” city. From a classic introduction and almost heroic ending, Olwenya is truly one of the best things about Nairobi Half Life.

Check out the lead actor’s interview here.

I sat down with the actor, who is much less gangster and imposing like he is in the film. Check out the first part of the interview below.

Ghafla!: “How did you get involved with the film?”

Olwenya Maina: “I remember auditioned through the workshop project. So, I went to the audition, I was told me maybe I could attach my showreel. Later, I went to the audition which were held at the Heron Court Hotel. After that, it was just waiting for the shortlist to know if I was going to get it or not. Then later I get another call and I’m told I’m supposed to go to Ginger Ink for the last audition.

When I went in, I get into this room, and he [Tom Tykwer] is there. And then there is the director [Tosh Gitonga] who I didn’t know. And when I meet Tom Tykwer, I thought maybe this is just another guy, maybe one of the mentors or facilitators. And then I met Tosh, and he just looked at me. He had already settled on Babu (Joseph Wairimu) as Mwas. He was looking for something workable, and he said that’s the guy I want. And that was it.”

G!: “One of the best things for me were the performances, the characters were very well casted. How was it doing that? Especially considering that you were playing a gangster. Was there research? Did you try canvassing gangsters?”

OM: “Well, I practice method acting, whereby you don’t really have to get the external feelings so that you can ignite your emotions or get to build the character. It’s just reading the character, understanding it and letting everything just flow, so that you know how to gesture or do everything.

So, for me, I did my own research. Which is maybe trying to undertsand how to live in a prison, life in crime, which I’ve never gotten near to. The closest I’ve ever been to getting into crime is being a priest.”

G!: “You were almost a priest?”

OM: “Yes. So, it was difficult. I’m from a background of doing comedy and stage performances, so it was not–I would say being a comedian made it difficult for me to do an action-packed drama. The assistance that I was accorded by my colleagues, they were letting me know, this is the sheng used, because I could not understand half of it. It was so deep.

The film was written by Serah Mwihaki, Potash and Samuel Munene. But then the translation on the ground, the sheng ya mtaa–every mtaa has their own sheng. In this case, we’re trying to get the best that anybody would understand. In this case, I would like to congratulate Anthony Ndung’u, the guy who plays Waf. He’s the guy who taught us all this and giving me real life experiences of such people.”

Check out Nairobi Half Life at the Planet Media Cinemas at Westgate at 3:20 p.m. and 7:20 p.m. for Kshs. 350 on weekdays and Kshs. 450 on weekends.

Ogopa Deejays’ Marya Involved in An EPIC Twitter Beef

So, one Huddah Monroe decided to voice her opinion on Ogopa Deejays’ Marya’s talent a few days ago. The singer who burst into the scene when she featured in Colonel Mustapha’s Hey Baby and hit her peak when she did Chokoza with Avril.

Below are select tweets from the tweef, which has gone on over the past two days.

@HUDDAHMONROE @maryaogopadjs truth is I didn’t abuse u. I just wondered aloud why you’d sit down and write a song like ‘Sishiki Simu.’ My thoughts.”

@HUDDAHMONROE I didn’t actually beef with Marya, I say it again. I HATE, LOATHE, DESPISE that song #sishikisimu”

@HUDDAHMONROE When I dissed Maryas song, I was all alone. Why is the whole of Ogopa Deejays on my d**k?”

@HUDDAHMONROE I’m tired of shooting the s**t, my opinion still remains. Marya has no musical talent. #HakunaKituUtafanya”

@HUDDAHMONROE If I dissed Wahu, STL, Amani and many others with talent, I’d be committing twitter suicide but a fat brown skin woman with no talent. C’MON!”

And some people agreed with Monroe:

@Niakabelle I’m so tired of Kenyan artists bull***t! I support them so much and they don’t give out quality music. #nikona @huddahmonroe”

@sickolia_ But Huddah said the Truth, Marya has no Talent. Kwani she can’t stand Criticism? “

Marya reacted.

@maryaogopadjs @HUDDAHMONROE no beef. Yo at liberty to think aloud. Try to be an artist for a day.. You’ll learn It takes more than ink and paper to be ‘Marya'”

@maryaogopadjs @BamzigiZigi some hudda chic woke up one morning n decided that I am not fit to be a musician. Which I totally disagree about.. Hope u good!”

@maryaogopadjs @MinaaUnited true…I’ll let it go…Just needed to let it off my chest first.. I work too hard to have someone belittle my efforts.”

Some came in support of Marya:

@shiladiva At least I know what @maryaogopadjs does and I respect that!!!….what does @huddahmonroe do? And why doesn’t she respect Marya’s art?”

@allenochi @maryaogopadjs vs @HUDDAHMONROE Marya won my heart way before she won the tweef.”

@WorldStarBosset @maryaogopadjs Hun, you have fans all the way in Australia so don’t let this chik who sucks d**k to get a meal bring you down”

Of course the label that nurtured Marya’s talent had to chime in:

@ogopadeejays Keep working had developing your talent no matter what your up against….down for local”

And the label-mates:

@RealJaguarKenya @HUDDAHMONROE You seem to know a lot about who’s got talent… This industry needs a break from people like you…”

The tweef regulator, Tweef 254 could not wait till the end of the tweef to reognize the “winner”:

@Tweef254 Its Now Official, @maryaogopadjs has more support than @HUDDAHMONROE . Tweef254 is pleased to award a Certweeficate pic.twitter.com/9ynRWviG”

One interesting tweet in the middle of the tweef was a threat from Huddah:

“‏@HUDDAHMONROE If you were bright enough, you’d let go of this beef, I will unleash stuff you have never wanted anyone know about you… *Shiro Baby*”

And then later unleashed this:

@HUDDAHMONROE @maryaogopadjs wewe go back to strippin & calling yourself Shiro baby, ukililia watu Buru with nowhere to sleep na kukula ugali with no stew.”

Five ALL TIME Hottest Events in Kenya

Yes, there have been a number of events that have been rolled out on Kenya soil but there are those that have been consistent and haven’t disappointed. So, here are the top five events thus far;

Party in the Wild
#5 Party in The Wild
Considered an event for hardcore clubbers, the event is organized by Green Lantern Entertainment and Capital Travels. The third edition of Party in The Wild was held at the Naro Moru River Lodge in August and the merrymakers had three days and two nights of extreme partying!! After successfully mounting three editions, Party in The Wild makes it in my top five illest event for being biggest camping and partying experience in Kenya.

Earthdance Nairobi#4 Earthdance Nairobi
Earthdance is a worldwide movement that started in 1997 and has been held annually since in more than 500 locations around 80 countries. Kenya joined the Earthdance movement and held its first event in 2009, and the festival has been improving ever since. This is the ultimate event for electro music lovers as they get a chance to celebrate the earth at a two-day festival. This year’s event will be held at Maasai Lodge, Kitengela on Saturday, September 22 and Sunday, September 23. The event is brought to you by 6AM entertainment, Turbochill and their supporters.

thursday nite live#3 Thursday Nite Live
Since its inception in November 2011, this music series has been happening every single Thursday of the week. This is the event where you get to experience EVERY type of music; ranging from soulful ambient sounds of talented Kenyan, some jazz & fusion, some roots reggae and afro jazz. This is the event to attend if music from the likes of Barbara Guantai, Sauti Sol, The Village Band, Yunasi, Eric Wainaina, Sarabi and Aziza Muzik is what you relish.

Tusker Lite Experience logo#2 Tusker Lite Experience
After flying in Donnel Jones, Joe Thomas and now (this weekend) Johnny Gill, Tusker Lite Experience is the event to always look forward to. The Tusker Lite experience is about creating a musical experience and the so far the artistes who have been featured have definitely transcended that. With the timeless music, revelers at this event have always had a fantastic music experience! So for me, this event comes second.

475f12d0f6109adbd522d72e06a83881 XL#1 Blankets & Wine
This by far is the best thing that could ever happen in Kenya as far as events are concerned. It is a picnic-style open concert that showcases different genres of Afro fusion music. With its September edition (BLANKETS & WINE XXXVII) going down last weekend, the organizers have done fans justice by flying in the likes of Oliver Mtukudzi, Lira, Liquideep, Lady Jay Dee and TKZee. Kenyan musicians like Muthoni the DQ, Eric Wainaina, Sauti Sol, Octopizzo (made his debut at the event last weekend) among others have graced different editions of Blankets & Wine. For this, Blankets & Wine is Kenya’s leading music event yet.

Well, that’s it. What do you think? What should be where?

TPF’s Dr. Mitch is Kshs. 10 Million in Debt

You remember him as the charismatic host of Tusker Project Fame. Some Ugandans know him as the guy who owes them money. Ushs. 250 million to be exact. That translates to about Kshs. 10 million.

So, how did the quick-witted doctor get himself into his predicament? Apparently, besides hosting events, he also doubles as an organizer back in his home country.

One of his latest gigs was the Demarco/Wayne Wonder show, which Kenya’s own Madtraxx was slated to perform at. According to Ugandan media, the show was a total flop. According Uganda’s number one paper, Red Pepper, Mitch brought the problem upon himself.

Days to the show, he was apparently approached by rainmakers who promised him they could make sure it does not pour on the concert day. Mitch, being a strong Christian, turned them away. Besides, he doesn’t believe in such primitive notions.

If it was not the reason, then the rain was the beginning of the problems during the show. The fans chose not to show up. The few who did experienced more fail than concert. When the sound was at least working, it was terrible. Any tolerance the crowd might have had was diluted by the rain that hit the open air Lugogo Cricket Oval.

To think that Mitch could have averted everything by just paying the 5,000 (shillings) the rainmakers asked for, then he would not have to deal with pressure from suppliers from who he borrowed the Kshs. 10 million from.

Photo Gallery: A-List artistes have a private Mansion Party

Some of our artistes sure know how to throw a party… elegant and really expensive parties at that and they, as it may seem, know exactly whom to invite, keeping the circle as it is.

About a week ago, a group of A-List Kenyan artistes threw a mansion party which was of-course an ‘invite only’ event and only the ‘big shots’ in the music industry were present.

Among the artistes who attended the mansion party were Bamboo, Stella Mwangi, Kanja, Camp Mulla, Iyke (M-Tech) and Andrew Macharia (video director for Camp Mulla’s Fresh All Day and Kanja’s Paradise) just to mention a few.

Here are some of the photos from the party.

Experience the Perfect Fusion of Modern & Contemporary Music

Thum will take place on the  28th September at the Michael Joseph Center, Safaricom House between 6:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Charges will be Kshs.350 advance and Kshs. 500 at the gate.

Popular at poetry events, seen at the Nairobi Fashion Market this year with Aaron Rimbui, at Ndoto with Aziza and at The Exhibition with Afrology, Lele Ngoma have put together their grandest concert for this year. They are calling it Thum.

The night will feature songs in vernacular accompanied by contemporary instrumentals. Much as ‘thum’ is a Luo word for ‘music’, it will be a blend of Kikuyu, Luo, Kiswahili, English and a bit of Creole…maybe.

They aim to celebrate cultural identities that unite us; Kenyans. Bitings and drinks will be served and security provided.

The opening acts will be the talented Change Otieno performing live for the first time, Siri ya Muziki as well as the young, fresh Nouvelle who have a distinct afro-rock feel to their music.

Having worked with and shared a stage with the big names in the industry; Ayub Ogada, The Villagers Band, Elani, Patricia Kihoro, Aaron Rimbui, Winyo, Aziza among others Lele are now taking off. Immediately after the concert, the band will start recording their album, which they plan to release some time next year.

Part of the proceeds goes to Haki foundation which offers support and creates awareness on kidney diseases.

Habida was one of the many Kenyans who got a Channel O Music Video Awards nomination this year. Together with Cannibal who she features in her song, My Reason, she was one of the five finalists in the Most Gifted R&B Video category (learn how you can vote for her here). Below is an interview she did with Ghafla! after she found out about her nomination.

Habida: I was so grateful, and to be honest, it happened on a video that for the first time that I had put together myself. I organized everything. Came up with the concept, ran around organizing everything so for this video to be nominated is really amazing and close to my heart for me.

Ghafla!: How did you find learn about the nomination?
H: I learnt about it on Twitter.
G!: How did you react?
H: In shock! I really was not sure what was going on as I saw it in a tweet. I confirmed it with someone at Channel O then it sunk in and it put a big smile on my face.
G!: What do you think your chances are of winning?
H: Well, I am going to say that I am going to win. And even if I don’t, I am still a winner for being nominated. I believe God is in charge of my success and I am praying and claiming that it is my time.
G!: Have you checked out your competition? (Hero – Lloyd Cele, Leva Boy – Lizha James featuring Perola, Oyi – Flavour featuring Tiwa Savage, Be There – 2Face)

Pic of the day: Nonini and Jua Cali before they got swag

Oh my God! The photos that we come across on social media these days concerning our celebrities, just hilarious.

This photo of Jua Cali and Nonini was taken way before Calif Records was a house hold name. Way before they were actually famous and obviously, much more way before they adapted to fashion.

Take a look at where these guys came from (click on the photo to maximize).

Photo Gallery: How It Went Down at the Talanta Awards

“We seek to encourage talent. We believe there is not limit to what God can do through your talent only if you are willing. Support others as they soar up. We wish you all the best as you serve God with your talents and gifts.”

That was the Talanta Awards’ message for this year’s event which saw nominations go to various artistes including Alemba, BMF, Bantu and various US-based Kenyan gospel artistes.

The fifth edition of the awards took place on the 1st of September at Green River Community College in Auburn, Washington. Check out photos from the event below.

BestNgoma Is Dead

RIP BestNgoma?

CORRECTION: Bernard Kioko has contacted us and confirmed that BestNgoma’s content has simply been shifted to the bernsoft.com website. The domain for BestNgoma.com has expired and they will not be using it any more.

Bestngoma.com, the website created by Bernsoft for the purpose of selling Kenyan music, is no more. When you go to BestNgoma.com now, all you get is a placeholder page with some generic ads. That is what happens for after a website has expired. The demise of BestNgoma comes despite a huge effort by its rich parent company Bernsoft in collaboration with Safaricom to sell Kenyan music for the low, low price of 5 bob.

Safaricom helped out shortly after website launched by sending a lot of SMS advertisements to their subscribers with the link to Bestngoma.com. They also made it such that you could see an ad for Bestngoma.com whenever you topped up your credit. BestNgoma was also one of the first links on Safaricom’s highly trafficked “Safaricom Live” portal. Despite all this, they died. I had once talked with the owner of the website, Bernard Kioko, during an event. He confessed to me that the 50% cut that Safaricom would take for providing the payment service was something that made BestNgoma hard to run as a business.

It seems that the business of selling Kenyan music is an extremely tough one that nobody seems to have cracked in the online market. I tend to agree with DJ Pinye, who was once quoted as saying that it is very hard to sell music to the young generation, who are aware of all sorts of ways to get the downloads for free via internet or file exchanging. PewaHewa.com is another online music retailer that seems to be struggling. Looking at their homepage, the songs have not been updated in ages.

Octopizzo turning ‘Ivo Ivo Ivo’ into serious cash

This guy knows money, and not just the definition of it. If it were possible for him to create his own currency, own money, he would be all over that right now. Octopizzo doesn’t waste any time when it comes to pointing out opportunities of making money, and huge mulla at that.

While other artistes are waiting for revenues from their music and shows, Octopizzo is getting all that and more. From his music, concerts and side hustles. Now, that’s a business man right there. Suits are indeed overrated.

From his latest song, ‘Ivo ivo ivo’ from which he created an awesome video, he has developed a small T-Shirt clothing line with the same title. Way to completely take advantage of your song’s popularity Octo. Really smart guy, this one. Check out the Ts below.

Photo Gallery: Octopizzo Makes His Blankets & Wine Debut

Last weekend, was a really busy one for Octopizzo. After performing at the Fanta Back to School event all the way in Kisumu (check out the photos here), he flew back to Nairobi and was the first performer at the Nokia Don’t Break the Beat East Africa finals on Saturday night.

The very next day he made his Blankets & Wine debut, where he performed with the Drummer Queen herself, Muthoni. Check out photos from last weekend’s Blankets & Wine here. Check out photos of his appearance at the event below.

Did You Know That Mickey and Minnie Mouse Were In Kenya?

Last weekend cartoon characters Mickey and Miney Mouse (or is it Mice???) were at the Westgate Mall to commemorate great kids’ television.

During the event, which was their VERY first visit to Kenya, the world renowned duo tickled kids and parents alike with their comical dances.mickey

Though originally designed for children, Disney Junior Channel on DStv, parents can also enjoy the programme. Disney Junior Channel (one of three Disney channels ) on both DStv and GO is the home for Mickey and Minnie.

MICKEY-WITH-MACHACHARI-ACTOActors from Citizen TV’s kids’ programme, Machachari, were present at the event and even posed for a photo with Mickie.

Churchill Commits To Pay Conje’s Rent For A Whole Year

It only takes an effort from an individual to convince the rest that something should be done. It is really amazing what joint forces can accomplish and this is about to be illustrated by the Kenyan people once again.

We did it with Zack, and now we are about to do it again with celebrated champion boxer, Conjestina Achieng, thanks to the initiative taken by our selfless celebrities. Like I said, it only takes one step to start a march, and this step was started by Nonini. The patriotic actions that this artist has been influencing lately are just moving. From the ‘Colour Kwa Face Campaign’, helping out upcoming artists and now, attempting to raise funds for turning around Conjestina Achieng’s unfortunate events, I take my hat off for you Nonini. Mad respect.

Nonini this morning initiated the campaign/group, Tuko Pamoja Conje, that is set to see Conjestina Achieng back to her right state of mind, and possibly alleviate her financial nightmare. Nonini is now waiting for the Tuko Pamoja Conja paybill number to be set up, after which it will be made official and donations will be welcomed.

To show just how serious Nonini is about this, he met with Conjestina’s landlord and paid for the late rent of four months that Conjestina had failed to clear. He even paid for an extra month.

A Kenyan hero getting washed up on our watch? Not going to happen. Not again. I will not even bring up the Mau Mau Freedom Fighters unfortunate story of neglect. We can fix this.

Churchil Ndambuki put up some effort in this plight too. On his facebook page this morning, Churchil wrote,

“HEEEEEH! IS THIS CONJE’S REAL STATE? Mimi nimejitolea kulipia our Champion RENT FOR THE WHOLE YEAR!… Ebu #LETSHelpConje! sasa hivi!

It is small actions like these (well, this isn’t small at all but you get the point) that move masses. Let’s all make our contributions to lift this falling hero. No talk, actions only.

Music will be provided by DJ Protege and DJ Hypnotiq on a night where Redds merchandise will be given away. Dress code is “touch of elegance.” Persons under the age of 21 will not be allowed.

Nonini Clears Conjestina’s Rent Arrears

Nonini is one celebrity who is truly trying to make a difference in people’s lives. Not only through music, as he did for albinism, but through his privileges, like trying to help artistes realize their dreams.

He highlighted the issue about boxer Conjestina’s health, and now wants to go even further. The rapper is currently working on ways to better the situation by setting up help channels, and even had Conjestina’s sister and a mental health expert in studio this morning.

Not only that, but Nonini also cleared Conjestina’s four-month rent arrears and even paid for an extra month. That’s not enough for the rapper and radio presenter, though. He still wants to do more, “But Conje still needs your help sabu she needs medical treatment and also support for months to come. I wanna see her back in the ring doing her thing? PamojaConje2012 Be your brothers keeper!”

Nonini will avail the paybill number for the fund he is setting up by the end of the day. You can also text Nonini on the 1FM SMS line, 4971 and he will get back to you with the paybill number once it’s up.

Bamboo Ni Baba Yao. Says Klepto Owe K-South

Bamboo was on Mambo Mseto with Mzazi Willy M. Tuva, where he was talking about his return to the country after years in the U.S. He spoke on a wide range of subjects concerning the industry including his beef with Klepto.

Bamboo clarified that the beef was not really his, but Chiwawa’s. It didn’t stop him from talking about the three-member group though.

“Hii style ya hip hop, kuna watu tumewafundisha ku-rap. Mi nikaa baba yao, nafaa kuwapatia jina yangu ya mwisho. Walikuwa wanafaa kuitwa Nyash-boo (This hip hop style, we taught them how to do it. I’m like their father, they need to use my name as a surname, like Nyash-boo).”

He added, “Kwa ma-interview walikuwa wanasema eti wali-learn from Jay-Z. Kwani akina Jay-Z walikuwa wana-rap Kiswahili? Before sisi, najua hata hawakuwa wanajua unaeza-rhyme swa. (In interviews, they said they learnt from Jay-Z. Did Jay-Z rap in Swahili? Before us, they didn’t know they could rap in Swahili).”

The rapper who has released a single with Lavosti and Isis since he came back then said, “Mi sifichangi kitu, mi hubonga ukweli (I don’t hide anything, I speak the truth.”

Away from beef, Bamboo had nice things to say about rappers he came back to find. “Octopizzo ana-hustle (Octopizzo is hustling). I know he had beef with Abbas, I don’t know what that’s about. Abbas is still my boy, K-South for life. I can’t hate a young guy coming up. He reminds me of me backin the day.” He also had nice words for Kaka Sungura, “Rabbit ako poa (Rabbit is good). He is very creative. Si ati anajaribu ku-copy msee (He is not trying to copy anyone).”

Read about Bamboo reiterating his dominance in the Kenyan rap game and his thoughts on Genge here.

Kapella goes ‘cha mama cha baba’ with Vanika

On the road back to history lane, these two artistes are. And here I was, thinking that I was the only one reminiscing the good old days when we used to fool around with girls, playing parenting and what not.

Kapela and Vanika were thinking the same thing when they came up with this track, ‘cha mama cha baba’. The lyrics to the chorus are some what, ‘young’ and adventurous. Kapela brings in the hip hop bit with his verses and ‘gangster’ flow. Kind of builds an irony, but enjoyable though.

Have a listen at Kapela’s latest track featuring Vanika, ‘cha mama cha baba’ below. You might as well just call up ‘the one that escaped’ and see how it goes, if you know what I mean.

Bamboo Maintains That He is Still King wa Rap. Also, Says Genge Lacks Creativity

Bamboo was on Mambo Mseto with Mzazi Willy M. Tuva, where he was talking about his return to the country after years in the U.S. He spoke on a wide range of subjects concerning the industry including his dominance in the game.

According to the Bamboo, despite being abroad for years, no one has claimed his crown as the king of rap. “Hakuna mtu ametoa album kaa mbili. At least Nonini ametoa moja lakini alikuwa ashatokea nikiwa, so si ati ni kama amechukua crown yangu. Hakuna msee mpya ametokea aka-dominate (No one has released at least two albums. Nonini released one album but he was already around when I was there, so it’s not like he took my crown. No new rapper has come out and dominated.”

Bamboo also shared his thoughts on the Genge music style, “Genge is very close to kapuka. If you listen very closely, it still sounds like *singing* ‘kapuka this, kapuka that.’ At least Nonini tried being different. Si ati nasema ni mbaya, inaonekana wamekosa creativity fulani (I’m not saying it’s bad, but it lacks creativity).”

The interview was conducted in a light-hearted manner and it didn’t seem like Bamboo was trying to stir any beef, but still, it’s going to be hard for the artistes he mentioned to take it lying down.

Photo Gallery: Nokia Don’t Break the Beat finals

It was indeed an epic night. Raw freestyle battles back to back, accompanied by performances from established artistes. The crowd lovely and the music awesome, just what was expected at the Nokia Don’t Break the Beat finals.

Kenya’s Xcalibar took the crown and proved to be the most lyrical rapper in the competition. It was no easy task, so you know that he really deserved it.

KenRazy Hooks Up with Gin Ideal in New Love Song

Kenrazy is proving to be one of the most consistent artistes in the music industry right now. Every few weeks, he has a new track out. He has now featured in a song with Gin Ideal.

Looks like the rapper is keeping the YouTube servers busy again with the release of Wapewe. Gin Ideal’s East African style RnB sandwiches KenRazy’s Ghipuka rap at the beginning and the end of the track.

KenRazy, Kenya’s best lyricist, recently released a mixtape. Gin Ideal has done Wote Wote and featured in V6’s I Want You Now. Check out KenRazy’s and Gin Ideal’s Wapewe below.

Moving On After Controversy, Calif Records to Release New Anticipated Music Videos

Calif Records are weathering the storm of the recent scandal and controversy that hit the stable over the last two months after some of their top artistes left the record label.

Calif Records has now announced the videos they are slated to release in the coming month. They will release Alpha Msanii and Sanaipei Tande’s new unnamed single.

Mejja’s video for the track which was touted as his first English song, Over My Ex, will also get a release in September. The song was released a couple of months ago and has been doing well on radio.

One of Jua Cali’s latest tracks, Kuna Sheng will also get a video out of Calif this September. The single was his first release from his upcoming album, Genge Yajayo. The video for his second single, which he did with Juliani, was released last month.

Watch Out!!! Fake Journalists on the Loose in Nairobi

If you have hosted a media event or been to any of late you have probably come in contact with the new bunch of people masquerading as journalists without you realizing.

They commonly target functions that are hosted in major hotels around town and the trend is spreading fast! The bogus reporters come equipped with fake IDs bearing names of the recognized media houses. Just to seem genuine, they demand for demand for press releases and any other useful material promising to report on the stories, but of course they don’t post anywhere.

So dire is the tendency that in some occasions the fake journalists outnumber the legit ones. One of the event organizers says, “They scramble for food and most of them eat without any table manners especially at cocktails and dinners”. He added, “We send out invitations in advance and at times request for a specific number of representatives per house to attend, but contrary to our expectations, we receive ten reporters from a media house.” Obviously, majority of these later turn out to be shams.

“I don’t understand where the problem is. These are young people who can do something productive rather than wasting time roaming about in town. There is need for the relevant authorities to intervene to save the situation,” complained another event organizer.

How desperate can fellas get???!
