Photo Gallery: Missed this month’s Blankets and Wine? Check out how it was

This month’s Blankets and Wine event at the Mamba Village was as graceful as all its other editions. Full of colour, vibrant people, sweet wine and of-course, best of all, good, live band music.

This time, Muthoni Drummer Queen herself and Octopizzo took to stage, along with other major artistes like Edith Weutonga from Zimbabwe, DJ Cortega and Eddie Grey among others.

Non of them disappointed, as these photos are about to show you, courtesy of Quaint Photography.

Guess who’s shooting Prezzo’s ‘My City My Town’ video

Prezzo is definitely not going standard again. It’s top notch all the way for him and his music from now on. What am I even talking about? Prezzo has always impressed his fans and haters in all his videos, even way before we got accustomed to high definition (HD) footage.

He has however stepped up his video production a notch higher, and he is about to reveal this in ‘my city my town’ video which is soon to be shot. Judging from Prezzo’s previous music videos, this won’t be anything short of theatrical and dramatic. All the works. I have a feeling we are in for yet another epic movie with this new video that he is planning to do and an unforgettable at that, considering Clarence Peters will be shooting it.

With the high quality videos that Kenyan artistes are doing nowadays, it is very clear that if you can’t make the cut, get out! Prezzo will soon make it more clear.

“I intend to do a video for my new song titled “My City, My town”. I ‘m actually working with one of Nigerian artistes called, Clarence Peters. He does very good videos and I look forward to working with him,” Prezzo said.

Keep it Ghafla to get the first view of his new video once it’s out.

A very enjoyable hagiography of Bob Marley:…[an] act of homage to the adored Rastafarian star and musical hero.” – Peter Bradshow, The Guardian

How do you capture the life of a legend on film? Director Kevin Macdonald’s solution was simply to let those who knew Bob Marley talk about him in their own style.” – Geoffrey MacNab, The Independent

Kevin Macdonald’s impressive portrait of Bob Marley offers a glimpse of an extraordinarily full yet oddly mysterious life.” – Philip French, The Observer

A riveting biography – a detailed, finely edited character study.”  – Stephen, Holden New York Times

Filled with thrilling concert footage and scores of in-depth interviews…this all-encompassing, rather classically assembled biography forges a moving depiction of an artist.” – Jordan Mintzer, The Hollywood Reporter

Ojiji, Nokia don’t break the beat finalist, drops new track

Hardly a week has past and Ojiji is already ahead with his music. Unlike most rappers who emerge from talent search contests such as the Nokia: Don’t Break The Beat and disappear never to be heard of again almost immediately when the contest is over, Ojiji is not about to hang his gloves any time soon.

Despite losing to fellow Kenyan rapper, Xcalibar, last Saturday at the Nokia: Don’t Break The Beat finals, Ojiji still raps with his head up high, after all, he was the crowd favorite. He and Xcalibar thwarted the other East African rappers with punchline after punchline, each landing lyrically severe blows to the opponent’s confidence. Xcalibar walked away with the price, so at the end of it all, it’s all good.

Ojiji has now released a new track, showing clearly that he is not in any way deterred by the loss of the contest. If anything, he is still a winner at some extent. His popularity right now cannot be compared to where it was before he joined this competition.

Have a listen at Ojiji’s new track, ‘By the time’ below. Do you think he got what it takes to maintain his relevance in the music industry now that the contest is over?

The movement also provided an avenue for the artistes to network with established artistes and various industry stakeholders.

The movement, which has facilitated the rise of some of Kenya’s top gospel artistes, has also inspired similar initiatives in Malawi and Zambia. From 2010, Madlove Lounge has partnered with other entities to bring in top gospel hip hop artistes from the U.S. including Da T.R.U.T.H, Lecrae, Flame, Tedashii, KB, Trip Lee and Andy Mineo.

It doesn’t stop there. Madlove Lounge presents The MOVE Tour in Kenya. The tour brings together the fierce creative explosion of four of today’s leading voices in urban ministry, Da T.R.U.T.H, Jahaziel, Ambassador and Sean Simmonds. This is a movement to awaken African communities by challenging and equipping youth and young adults to MOVE forward with God.

It started with a 19-city tour in the U.S., and now a six-city African tour. The Kenyan leg of MOVE is brought to you by Madlove Lounge and NTV. To stay posted with the latest information join the event on Facebook, ‘Move Tour Kenya’.

Citizen Goes On A “Shopping Spree” For Hot Anchors

It seems the Dennis Pritt Road-based media house is not ready to let go the top slot in the media industry any time soon. Just last week Ghafla! exclusively reported the hiring of a hot news anchor, Michelle Morgan, on the business news section by the TV station.

In a similar move, Monday saw the media giant introduce its newest kid on the block Alice Atieno Odera also joining the business news section. Odera and Morgan are expected to take over Citizen TV’s business desk from Terryanne Chebet who left the station for CCTV, and Tony Timase who is expected to do business features for Citizen.citizen tv

This move could mean that Citizen TV is positioning itself to compete effectively in the market as competition is yet to get stiffer after CCTV’s sister station CNC TV (Xinhua TV) declared its interest in Kenya.

Well, it seems Royal Media mean business in this game.

Male, Kenyan Artiste Named as the Online Face of Miss Fabulous Africa

Kenyan musician, actor, model and writer, Influxx Swagga has been honored by the Miss Fabulous Africa Committee as the online face of Miss Fabulous Africa 2012.

The committee had been following his showbiz updates all over internet after he linked up with them six months ago. It all started when he sent them an email requesting to use their models clips from Miss Fabulous Africa 2011 for his music video “Hii Mziki” which they allowed him to use.

He is a perfect example of a person who can stop at nothing to achieve a dream having gone so digital to achieve a very large fanbase online, which they also want to tap in to. They said that they were looking for a man who would be light-minded to inspire young African women to achieve personal growth and development without making it look like a single gender fight.

Women are vital partners in the development of Africa and the world but they need special inspiration and support to realize their capabilities.

Influx Swagga was pleased that someone somewhere is appreciative of his work and that social media can as well make such a big impact in the current society. He has always had a dream to build positive culture for the modeling  industry in Kenya and he takes this as a golden platform.

The pageant aims are to give young African girls a platform to discover their inner beauty, talent and creativity in achieving their humanitarian goals in life and laying a strong foundation as leaders of the future. The theme of Miss Fabulous Africa 2012 is Youth For Change.

Taurus Musik and SubSaharan records sign The Afrikan King

Earlier in the day, Kanja, the self proclaimed Afrikan King, became the most recent signee to Taurus Musik. He signed a lucrative joint record deal with Taurus Musik/Subharan Records. More details:

Here are the pictures from the signing that went down earlier today:

L-R: Iyke Anoke(CEO Taurus Musik), Kanja ‘The Afrikan King’, Suzanne Gachukia(Owner/CEO SubSaharan Records)

2012-09-006

The Taurus Group is closely affiliated with M-Tech, and was founded (and is currrently managed) by Ikechukwu (Iyke) Anoke – East African CEO of M-Tech. M-Tech specialises in providing radio jingles, managing call in shows, TV game shows, TV content provision and production, Media promos and competitions, Vibedownloads, providing Ringtones –Monotones, Polytones, Truetones, RingBacktones (RBTs)-, Full Music downloads etc. This often places it in close conjunction with artistes and entertainers. They often orchestrate lucrative deals between their clients and the entertainers, sometimes even signing contracts with particular entertainers to guarantee exclusivity to only M-Tech clients. They have become an integral part of the endorsement and download/ringtone monetary streams for artistes due to their big-spending clients across Africa.

Taurus Musik, a branch of the Taurus Group, was founded in 2011 by Iyke when as CEO of Mtech he saw the need to have Kenyan artistes better managed and better presented in order to be able to benefit from opportunites offered by companies such as M-Tech. They have been signing on major Kenyan artistes in various capacities (live concert royalties-international and local, business management, PR/image management, music video principal photography and production, etc.) and acting as a bridge between Kenyan artistes and M-Tech fraternity. Some of their more prominent signees are Camp Mulla, Zambian ZoneFam, 9-con (Kenyan based Nigerian/Kengerian) and Isis.

Congratulations to Taurus Musik/SubSaharan records on quickly signing the Afrikan King, who has splashed back onto the scene with his single E****y two months ago.

Might I be brave enough to add -I think uncle Chim Tuna would definitely concur-, our entertainment industry is finally starting to grow up.

It’s In Your Hands. You Can Help Pick the New Crossover 101 Host

A while back, we announced that Crossover 101 is looking for a new host. The auditions were done, potential hosts were shortlisted and put on air.

Over the last four weeks, different candidates have been tested live on air during the show’s Sunday broadcast. Now it’s up to the public to decide who they thought did the best job at hosting.

The four finalists are Allan T, Faith, Becky and Jacky. You can pick the winner by commenting on this photo on Deejay Mo’s Facebook.

The weekly Sunday morning show has gone through a number of changes since the show started. It started off with the Kubamba Crew of DJ Soxxy and DJ Mo who later moved to Citizen TV to start the Kubamba Show.

The show was later hosted by Viyerrah who left some time last year and Nancy Kihenia, who co-hosted with him, stayed on as host. The new host will join Alemba, Deejay Mo and replace Nancy.

Standing at 5’ 7”, Nandi spoke about how she got into acting and her dancing hobby. Speaking exclusively to Ghafla!, Mumbi revealed that she was featured in Bamboo’s “Compe” video as a dancer (now you know why dancing is her hobby).

Kenyans show mad love for Nairobi half-life

Nairobi Half-Life has proven to be by far the best movie that has ever been done for Kenyans by Kenyans.

All about the Kenyan gangster life, the movie depicts the streets of Nairobi as it is, both in daylight and night. If you thought Nairobi Half-Life was not that huge, think again.

How many Kenyan movies have you seen get featured on a news broadcast? That’s right.
Nairobi Half Life was recently featured in KTN news and the actors got to talk about some of the experiences they got from shooting the movie. Talk about greatness.

In-case you missed it, check it out below.

Video: Lizz Njagah shakes her booty at the homecoming party

This must be Lizz Njagah’s best year and she is not at all afraid to show it. She just recently got married to her long time boyfriend Alexandros Konstantaras in Greece and is still in the process of celebrating it.

Actor Lizz Njagah flew back into the country, from Nigeria and threw a Barbeque party at her place on arrival.

It is at this party that this video of her shaking her booty was recorded. Check it out, I know you want to.

Nyambane’s second wife releases new video

Linda Muthama maintains her relevance in the entertainment industry in more ways than one.

It is impressive how she can just release lovable tracks, one after the other. All of them proving to be as good as they look. With all the colour that she usually puts in her videos, you can’t help but light up as listen to her songs, and this is no different.

Linda Muthama’s latest gospel track, ‘siku njema’ has all the upliftment you need on a bad day.

Being a veteran in the Kenyan music industry, she clearly knows how to keep her fans entertained. Check out her new video below.

Video: Alemba performing in Seattle

Alemba has been on his been on his grind all over the world and has been enjoying every moment of it.

Taking his gospel tracks and spirit with him, Alemba has been to various places in the recent tour that he currently started. Seattle happens to be one of the fine places that Alemba got the privilege to perform in.

Although the show was in a church, the crowd was pretty welcoming and by the looks of the  video below, they enjoyed every minute spent with this artiste.

Check out the video below.

Take a look at Lyrical Erico’s new Sugar Mummy

Yes, you read right indeed. This is Lyrical Erico’s sugar mummy. First of all, do you even remember the guy. He and Shanky Radics were the artistes behind the super hit track, ‘Bambika’ back around 2004.

I don’t know about Shanky Radics, but Lyrical Erico is definitely back on his grind. Now with dreadlocks, he has gone all out on sugar mummy. Oh, in-case you are still lost and confused, ‘sugar mummy’ is Lyrical Erico’s new song.

In this song, Erico loudly calls out sugar mummies and their tactics to woe over young men, and the dancing here is as interesting as the lyrics.

Seeing that he is finally back, does this mean that there might be a possible re-union between him and Shanky Radics, because it would be really awesome.

Beautiful. Nini Wacera’s latest show-reel

She is one of the most talented and experienced actors Kenya’s ever bred. Nini Wacera was there when the Kenyan film industry was something to shake your head over, until now, when our productions influence others.

All the while, she has been a star, no doubt. Featuring in almost all hit series and epic movies.

Being the brilliant actor that she is, she has made it possible for everyone to witness her theatrical prowess, something that other Kenyan actors should also be working on.

Check out Nini Wacera’s show-reel.

Matasia Star (Jackiwa) Back At It Again!

Jackiwa is back with yet another…

This time she has gone for an instrumental that is reminiscent of 8-bit which she has dubbed Probox style. The track titled “Wacha Stress” is a feel good track which asks you to lose the stress you’re carrying and the burdens of the world.
In one line she sings, “…ya ulimwengu yasifanye ubebe punda!” then she moves on to urge you to join her in dancing by singing “…shake your bumper…”

The video done by Njopa Em Productions and has her and her dancers gyrating to the uptempo track energetically as would be expected of her unique style.
This i believe will be the next viral video as it just has Jakiwa written all over it and you know how she does her’s! Don’t believe me? Check out the video below and let us know what you think.

Photo Gallery: Ramogi Night, a ‘come baby come’ event

Ramogi night was very much anticipated and as it was expected, it lived to revellers’ expectations.

Fans turned up in large numbers at the Carnivore Grounds, ready to shake their booties all night long and that is exactly what went down at last Friday’s Ramogi Night. Check out these beautiful photos of the event courtesy of Quaint Photography.

Just who is behind The “Ikibamba sana wapi nduru weuweee” Drop??

Early this year there was debate about who REALLY is the guy behind the “Ikibamba sana wapi nduru weweee” drop? With some people arguing that it was done by MC Fullstop, others thought it was Alemba while others totally don’t have a clue to date.

However, according to Deejay Juan the Riddim Up (K24) Producer & a deejay with Supremacy Sound Entertainment, MC Supa Murcus is the guy behind the “Ikibamba sana wapi nduru weweee” drop. So popular is the drop that some people use them as their ring-tones or Message tones.ikibamba sana wapi nduru2

The drop is synonymous with ALL deejays irrespective of their music inclination (Gospel or secular). Drops like SAWA SAWA SAWA, ATE ATE, A BIG TUNE, CALL SECURITY and ATEE WHAT? are some of the effects that make deejay mixes worth listening to.

Despite the hype that the drop has received, nobody has come out to claim its rights thus far. So, just who is behind The “Ikibamba sana wapi nduru weuweee” Drop???!

KENYA’S HOTTEST DEEJAYS

Who are Kenya’s hottest deejays?

Yet another epic weekend was had by every member of Ghafla All Stars. And seeing as i was at venues and events with Deejays who managed to get me dancing, a question was conceived in my mind… Who is Kenya’s hottest deejay? Who keeps us dancing as we engage in our revelry?
And who do i elect to be on my list of the hottest Deejays? Well, have a look!

#10 Dj Styles
This guy was huge a couple of years ago. He was untouchable: going as far as instigating a beef between his outfit and another. You weren’t a deejay unless he gave you the nod. This guy was where it was at and he knew it. Unfortunately, the ego got the better of him and he begun to alienate people.
Then a story was aired on Pulse a long time ago; an expose about how he was paying a younger albeit better ranked deejay 3000/- per show and that was when i completely went off him. Maybe i’m losing objectivity but it is as it is. Pity too cos he made Kenyan Deejays cool -could’ve been a legend…

#9 DVJ Mobi
This lad spins at my favourite club and he’s pretty decent. He has incredible mixes of Dance, House, Kwaito and a smudge of some of my more favoured Naija music. What can i say about his sets except that i always get up to dance? nuff sed!

#8 Kriss Darling
What can i say about this lad? He has his show on K24 which to be honest apart from Jeff on the Bench is the only reason i tune in… well, that’s not right… Jeff, him and “The Sauce”. This lad is amongst the warriors that legitimized reggae and dancehall which hitherto was considered a mugs game…
That in itself immortalizes this lad beyond repraoch in as far as music is considered and the fact that i can ignore all the talking and singing along done on the mixtapes is testament to his skill.

This lad has a show on KBC called “HomeGrown” that’s just silly of the hook. Unfortunately though, the lass who dances awkwardly is abit distracting… i end up wondering whether it’s her awkward dancing or the fact that she can gerrit that is distracting… Anyway, he has really mad skills yo! bad station and time slot to be on but he is blessed with itchy scratchy fingers.

#6 Dj Hypnotiq
This chap holds it down like a safety pin on an old foggey’s adult diapers on when he is doing his thing on Live On Blast on KISS TV. Live On Blast airs on weekdays from 5:00 to 6:00pm..

This guy has mad sets on telly yo! Switching from local to international mixes with such ease.

He also has a day job at KISS TV where he is also the music director. Don’t believe me? Watch Live on Blast on Kiss TV. Go ahead, take me up on my challenge.

#5 Dj Mo
i must first confess to having a strong bias against gospel. Too much sing-songy balladry… But DJ Mo has found a way to keep gospel fresh and entertaining thus reaching and entertaining even the most hard-hearted critics such as me.

DJ_MO.jpg
This guy made being “saved” cool while simultaneously mixing and he did all this without breaking a sweat! And even his side hassle is impressive! What else would you want from a Christian Dj?

#4 Dj Nruff
If i have my facts right, i think he’s also the music manager at Easy FM -but i shan’t dock points for the fact seeing as irrespective of the music, it goes to show that he knows his music. To top it up, off, this guy is the Kenyan version of Dj Khaled. Unfortunately he only does tracks with lads from his neighbourhood. I’m often left wondering why he doesn’t just spread his wings and move on to bigger things possibly even getting his boy’os in with other established artists.
But i digress… this lad has ambition beyond spinning and scratching vinyl.

#3 Dj Kaytrixx
Friend of mine said something today… “As far as music is concerned, Kaytrixx is a god!” This lad reportedly rose to his feet after getting the short end of the stick… Pulse reported that he was being paid 3,000/- but he has risen to be the most demanded deejay… Save for the next two.

images.jpg
And his mixes? This lads sets are off the hinges like a bat out of hell! He has a monster in him when he’s mixing the music he has a fiend in him battling to be unleashed! Watch Str8 Up for proof of this!

This is where making a selection became a headache. These lads are too talented, too driven and too ambitious and too celebrated for this to have gone any other way other than a toss-up.

#2 Dj Creme
This guy is where it’s at! Even Channel O know this so they let him have his way with Bassment and trust that it’s a murder! As my boyo George would say: “Ssssssoooo niccccccce!”.
The only complaint i have is that he talks abit much but that does nothing to dampen the party atmosphere his sets generate. This lad so ill, any party he performs in catches a fever! He’s the only reason i’d think of setting foot in Galileos or Changes. Trust!

i5upviadsvzh4dagtujy.jpg

#1 Dj Joe Mfalme
This the only reason i tune in to Capital. His mixes are just that ill! And if you think not, check out his mixes on Channel O’s Bassment and if you aren’t impressed, i’m guessing that’s because your idea of music is hearing a walrus’ mating call.
This guy can read a crowd like no other and he’s straight versatile. He does hiphop sets, reggae sets, basically anything goes. He was the deejay at the Tarrus concert and he got the reggae uhm… Safaras shaking their dreads.

This next lad didn’t get on the list because to include him would be to trivialise his status: LEGEND.

medjadrian.jpg
Dj Adrian
This man right here is a legend! He has been playing since i can remember and were it not for my colleagues, i must admit that being a sucker for history. He has managed to remain relevant and he was amongst the breed that first  made a living out of what they are passionate about. Mad respect to this man right here and no one should blaspheme by saying different.

WOW! Flexx has a new song and it’s actually pretty nice. Check it out

Remember Flexx, from Calif Records? Yeah, that same guy who brought us that hilarious track, ‘Nyundo’ with Jua Cali. You do know that they were’nt exactly talking about the actual ‘nyundo’, right?

Anyway, Flexx is back and this time, he’s taking his video a little bit more seriously. I really love what they’ve done with video, considering their previous simple and freestyle videos.

What’s even better about this new track, ‘Haifai’, is the fact that it talks about the troubles that Kenya is going through, with hope that all will change soon.

The video is particularly interesting as they have applied the Ken Burns Effect on the photos in it. I just love how the photos express the lyrics without much effort, and the chorus is as awesome as it gets.

Check out the new song below.

Abbas takes more shots at K-Nel. This is getting serious

As K-Nel takes a diplomatic stand on this brewing beef between him and Abbas Kubaff, the latter is not ready at all to sweep it under the rag.

Abbas must have really been pissed off by this guy for him to be getting this heated. Ever since he (Abbas) performed at the super hyped Hip Hop Slum Down which was organised by Anglohili, things have not been smooth between the two.

Abbas claims that K-Nel disappeared with the rappers’ money immediately after the show was done. Apparently, this guy has not payed him a cent since then. This is the reason Abbas has been going H.A.M on him, calling him a con-man and alerting other artistes of his discovery.

K-Nel however, has insisted on not firing back at Abbas. Could this be maturity on his part, or just pure guilt.

A very angry Abbas Kubaff wrote on his facebook wall,

“Upon arrival from Germany, I was supposed to throw down a hell of a show, but thanks to Nelson anglo-silly he had to pull a Houdini even on my fellow artists and vamoosed with the cash….that’s wrong!!!”

Xtatic Bigged Up by International Artiste. Heading to SA for More Recordings

Xtatic managed to get herself noticed by just putting up one video online. She was soon signed by ROCKSTAR4000 and Sony Music Group. Looks like she is drawing the attention of not only record labels, but sites like MTV Iggy, Okay Africa and respected international artistes.

Xtatic convincingly won MTV Iggy’s artiste of the week, but a feature by Killakam on OkayAfrica got the attention of The Roots frontman, ?uestlove. He tweeted the article and mentioned the “upcoming” femcee:

“@questlove real nice flow from a female MC in kenya http://bit.ly/PuXeM7 @XtaticSamz”

This is not the first time the multiple Grammy winner has shouted out Kenyan artistes. He has previously bigged up the experimental band, Just-A-Band. Xtatic announced that this week, she is heading back to South Africa to finish up the work on her debut album, including more recording and video shoots.

Xtatic Gets an Interview on MTV Iggy

Rapper Xtatic beat out international artistes to win the MTV Iggy Artiste of the Week. Besides bragging rights, part of the deal was that she gets to feature on the MTV Iggy and an interview. She got just that.

In the interview, she speaks about her appreciation on winning Artiste of the Week, progress on her debut album, her meteoric rise to fame and more. She also mentions her inspirations, including Bahamadia, Lady of Rage, Lauryn Hill, Common and Talib Kweli.

She also suggests what the MTV Iggy crew should eat if they were to come to Nairobi, “Look for a local delicacies: nyama choma and ugali or chapati-dondo.” Check out the full Xtatic interview here.

Awesome! Octopizzo’s latest video, ‘Ivo Ivo’ is finally out

If this isn’t the most ambitious Kenyan rapper right now, I don’t know who is. He has managed to shoot one of the best music videos to ever come from Kenya.

Octopizzo’s latest song ‘Ivo ivo’ is dedicated to the fans and all who support him. “Sometimes I bump into some of my fans on the streets and they tell me ‘endelea hivyo hivyo. Wacha haters waendelea kuongea‘. This song is for those fans,” Octopizzo said.

The video itself is just hip hop. There is no better way to describe it. Enos Olik, did a great job on it and there is no doubt that this will be the most discussed video for weeks to come.

New Study Shows That Pot Bellies Are Not Caused By Drinking

The Myth:

It’s every beer drinker’s unavoidable fate: the beer gut. The proof is all around us. We all have at least one friend or family member who perennially looks like they’re pregnant, regardless of their actual state of fertility or, for that matter, gender. And you too will get that nice round gut by middle age if you partake regularly.

“Every inch was worth it. Probably. I can’t remember.”

Your only choice in the matter is whether you suck it in whenever people approach or flaunt it like the wacky uncle who slaps his belly and boasts that “it all turns to penis after midnight.”

The Reality:

The beer gut doesn’t exist. Or rather, that massive mound you insist on calling your “one-pack” has nothing to do with actual beer consumption. Says who? Says science.

You see, some UK researchers recently got curious about this whole beer belly thing, but presumably their stingy bosses wouldn’t sign off on a never-ending supply of gauge “for science.” So they rounded up a 2,000-strong bunch of Czechs, a people who apparently wean their toddlers off of the bottle by offering them a nice stout. And what they found was at once surprising and freaking awesome: Beer appears to have absolutely nothing to do with the so-called beer gut.

In fact, research shows that the amount of beer you drink and the size of your belly have no correlation whatsoever. Hell, if you keep your beer intake under even a modicum of control, chances are it doesn’t even do that much to your general weight gain.

Now obviously beer has calories, so a huge intake will contribute to weight gain (especially since you tend to take very little exercise when you’re constantly bombed). But even then, it’s nothing more than what, say, a strict bacon sandwich diet would do to you — any excess calories can lead to weight gain. And that weight may or may not settle right on your belly, depending on whether you’re genetically predisposed to it.

That’s right: There’s a beer belly gene. People get fat in different ways, and abdominal obesity is just one of the many interesting fat-storing shapes that the human body can sculpt itself into if said human body doesn’t take care of itself. So if you have the gene, you’ll wind up having a pot belly eventually, regardless of your actual alcohol consumption. Unless, that is, you maintain a strict diet and exercise regimen for your entire life, but who the hell does that?

But if that’s the case, then where did this fictional correlation between big bellies and beer drinking come from? One possible culprit is cirrhosis, a liver disease of chronic alcoholics that involves the swelling of the abdomen into that familiar beach ball shape. We guess somebody decided that calling it a “beer gut” instead of “organ failure” was less of a buzzkill at family reunions.
