Legendary Anthem Composer Dies

Legendary Kenyan composer, Arthur Mudogo Kemoli is dead. He is most famously known for his work composing Fimbo Ya Nyayo, the anthem of the Moi era.

His other great accomplishments include composing anthems for the African Union and University of Nairobi, where he was also a senior literature lecturer. He retired from the university three years ago.

He was one of the best known musicians in Kenya’s great era of choral music and went on to perform in various African countries, Asia and in the Middle East.

Dr. Kemoli started music while in high school in Kakamega and Alliance Boys High School. He later graduated with a doctorate in philisophy from Sussex University in the U.K.

Do You Remember These Songs?

Over the years the Kenyan music industry has witnessed immense growth with musicians emerging with better quality music. However, there are those songs which were great hits and can hence be attributed for having shaped this industry. Here they are;

UNBWOGABLE
Done by Gidi Gidi and Maji Maji in 2002, the song was a boom in the country with all radio stations playing it. So big was the song that NARC used it as its official campaign anthem. The two musicians definitely attribute their career success to this track. The song even introduced new sheng words in the country like bwogo i.e. You can’t bwogo me.

BOOMBA TRAINe sir
This was yet another hit that dominated the airwaves in a major way. Nameless and E-Sir (RIP) topped the charts with this track besides keeping Kenyans busy on the dance floors of various clubs around the country.

NINANOKI
Once again, Nameless, having had success with Boomba Train, joined forces with singer Amani to do this great masterwork. This is another single that rocked Kenyans in 2003 topping capital charts for a record 110 days.

COMPE
Believe or not, this work of genius earned rapper Bamboo a six figure fortune, thanks to its fame. This track rocked local stations in the year 2004 and was even used in the movie Prime Evil.

KERORO
Off the album “Hanyaring Game”, Keroro was a stunning success prompting producers like Wawesh to come with refixes to the track. The genius behind this was Nonini (the godfather).

KIASI
If you remember correctly, this is the song that propelled genge artist Juacali to stardom. This particular track was one of those that unleashed Calif Records’ potential apart from dominating the airwaves in both clubs and radio stations across the nation.

HAIYA
This song made Kenyans “fall in love”. Even though done in Kikuyu, the song broke ethnic barriers and earned Harry Kimani awards for song of the year and best video at the Kisima Awards. He was also nominated as the best promising artist during the 2005 Kora Awards.

SINZIAnameless
Nameless was back again in 2006 with this huge track. This time, he decided make Kenyans fall in love again after “episodes of Harry Kimani”. This song was another great hit that and received massive airplay. With lyrics like nasinzia nikikuwaza… one was sure to get carried away by the song.

BANJUKA
This, in all probability was one of the biggest tracks of the decade. Rapper DNA got everyone dancing to this tune from young’uns to the first lady. DNA received a number of accolades from East Africa, thanks to his club-banger. The track was even used by PNU as its campaign machinery.

So, as we revere contemporary musicians let’s not forget what made this industry.

These are the artistes behind Jackiwa’s (Matasia Star) inspiration

Matasia Star’s Jackiwa has been around for quite a while and her music has demanded a huge number of listeners and viewers. She just has a way of making out viral videos that are the reason she is the topic of most music related conversations right now.

It is not clear yet whether most of her listeners are actual fans or just pure haters, because her videos have different or should I say, unique reasons for going viral. Though not everyone has good comments about it, this has not set Jackiwa back. She is still as strong and vibrant as she was when she was dancing in her ‘Life History’ video.

With her new song out, ‘Wacha stress’, Jackiwa has made it clear that she is here to stay. Asked by sources on who in the Kenyan music industry inpires her the most, she mentions Jimmy Gait, Wahu, Mr. Nice and the late and legendary E-Sir.

Yap! Can you feel the connection?

New Photos Of Nonini and Jua Cali When They Were Struggling

Here is a gallery of Nonini and Jua Cali when they were just starting out in the game.

From the look of things, this was about that time when Jua Cali had just released “Ruka,” which was his first song to get regular airplay on radio. Check out the “Ruka” shirt they were all wearing. You might remember Mahatma who sang the song “Pande Zote Mbili” around that time as well(wonder what happened to him, by the way…).

In the pics is also quite a nice bike which belonged to Nonini. When he shared the pics with us he reminisced about how the bike was special to him. Who knew Nons was a biker? You learn something everyday. Here are the photos. Compare them with the celebs you know today and you will surely be inspired:

Another hilarious set-up from the Naswa crew. Check it out

The Naswa series that run on Citizen TV has had every Nairobi resident on the look out. Constantly looking over their backs, especially when in the CBD. You just never know when these guys may strike and when they do, you don’t want to look stupid or scared off your shoes like some of the guys that are caught in most, if not all, set-ups.

I came across this Kula Happy video where the Naswa guys threw fake snakes from a tree down to the unsuspecting public. You want to see some of the reactions that these guys had. Just hilarious.

Video: Exclusive freestyle from Xcalibar

After winning the Nokia: Don’t Break The Beat contest, Xcalibar has been a very busy rapper lately with all the money and deals coming up.

Unlike most rappers who win contests and disappear into oblivion, Xcalibar has plans to make his mark in the East African music industry and that will be revealed through this link and more.

We even managed to get him to drop a freestyle session for us, the first since he won the contest.

Check out the video below.

Get to see Jalang’o tear into Joseph Hellon in this video

With all that has been going on in Hellon’s public life, it is just right if we sit back, relax and listen/watch the comic stuff that surrounds him and at this moment, or rather some few months ago, this comedy Night Roast is the only comic news we can give you about this talented fellow.

So, Jalang’o had the chance to roast this guy and he didn’t waste it. Not at all. He went all in, head first and left everyone laughing all the while, even Hellon himself.

Who knew Hellon was this ruthless at a roast? Check out the video below.

Xcalibar tells us what he will do with the Sh. 250, 000 he won at the Nokia: Don’t Break The Beat

So, the just concluded Nokia: Don’t Break The Beat East Africa contest saw Kenya take the money and stand its ground. Xcalibar and Ojiji went head to head with the other East African rappers on stage up till the finals.

Xcalibar won the contest and bagged Sh. 250, 000. Yes, this dude just stepped off the stage with that much money, from just rapping. Spitting a couple of rhymes on stage. Sounds easy, huh? You try it, then you’ll know just how hard it gets to get extremely creative in seconds.

We got a chance to get to know him better through our recent interview and he even let us in on what he is planning to do with the Sh. 250, 000 that he won immediately after thrashing his oponents infront of thousands of people.

Check out the video below to get to know about it.

“Political Supernova” Aside, Hellon Is Actually A Pretty Good Jazz Maestro

So we’ve been hearing a lot of noise regarding Joseph Hellon of late, with Esther Timberlake coming out to accuse him of inc*st.

The Hellon-Arunga-Timberlake drama has been carrying on for years now, ever since they all came together in a whirlwind announcement of the Placenta Party. I think, however, that the focus has shifted from what these three people are at their core: a news presenter, a jazz maestro and a conman.

I took the time to listen to some of Hellon’s jazz numbers on YouTube, and I got to admit, he’s pretty good. A smooth soul brother with that African touch of class. His saxophone romantically caresses my ears as he whisks me into an imaginary land of pleasure.

Just give this cool cat a listen in the video embedded below:

Behind the scenes video to Rabbit’s new song, ‘Haiwess make’

Rabbit has been on his grind for the longest time. Ever since he dropped his first official track, ‘jam nakam’, he has never stopped recording hit after hit.

Telling stories through his music seems to be what he loves best, thus the alias ‘story teller’. Well, I’m not too sure what this new song is about because we haven’t heard it yet, but judging from Rabbit’s previous tracks, it should be on point.

The track is titled ‘haiwess make’ and is due to be released very soon. Meanwhile, check out the behind the scenes video below.

PRESENTING: Jalang’o’s Range Rover Overfinch

Jalas is doing very well for himself, yawa!

We had heard some rumours some time back in the comedy circles about Jalang’o wanting to buy himself a new car. Word on the streets was that he was torn between a Range Rover, and a Mercedes Benz.

We called the jatelo today and he confirmed to us that he made his choice to buy a black on black Range Rover Overfinch. Overfinch is a British company which specialises in enhancing Range Rovers and is based in Leeds, England. With modifications made to both appearance and mechanicals, Overfinch’s cars are often noticeably different from standard Range Rovers and Range Rover Sports, and have recently become popular with celebrities. The company also produces a number of options, such as wheels, interiors and aerokits.

Jalas’ Overfinch is one of only four that have been imported into the country. We asked him for pictures, however, he was very modest with us, saying that he does not want to take photos of himself in the car and portray such a flashy image. Take it from us though, we can verify that multiple members of our staff have eye witnessed that he does indeed own the car in question.

He is one of the best deejays that Kenya has ever seen and developed, all the way from the Pilsner Mfalme Deejay Competition up till now. Massive growth he has shown both in his skills and exposure.

Now holding shows all across Africa, even for the BBA Stargame that has just concluded, Joe Mfalme has made his success evident by the purchase of his much dreamed of car, Subaru Outback.

Congratulations DJ Joe Mfalme. With the hard work that you’ve been putting in, you clearly deserve this one.

Former BBA Contestant Millicent Now Cleaning Up Residential Estates

Former Big Brother Amplified Housemate Millicent Mugadi spent her weekend cleaning up Ziwani estate in Nairobi’s Eastlands.

The Kenyan Nollywood actress came together with the residents of the area to spruce it up as part of her responsibilities as a peace ambassador. Ziwani estate is one of the areas that Millicent spent her childhood life before moving to upmarket neighbourhoods.

Millicent who loves spending time with open-minded people also sponsors a football team in the area and is very keen on affairs of the Ziwani estate. Milicent left BBA’s house a year ago and has since been spending most of her time in Nigeria where she has already left a mark in the film industry.

Way to go Milicent. Charity begins at home

Octopizzo Explains How He Was Humbled by Camp Mulla

Octopizzo, one of the biggest rappers in the country dropped by Ghafla! and while discussing why Kenyan artistes prefer not to go to the CBD, told us a cool story about a humbling incident he had when he met members of the Camp Mulla group.

He tells the story after being asked a question about going to places where you expect to be known and sadly realize that you are not.

Enyewe kunakuanga na places kama hizo. Hiyo inakuanga hiyo ego ya ma-artistes. Unaenda place unakaa, “kwani hamnijui bana? (Yeah, there are places like that. It’s about the artiste’s ego. They go to places like, ‘you don’t know me?’)”

Kuna place tushawai enda, tulikuwa tuna-record cypher na Camp Mulla. Nadhani either sikuwa nimejulikana sana ama–sijui yaani. Tulikuwa tumesimama hapo nje ya studio, kila msee anagotea Camp Mulla, jo wanapiga nduru. Mi nimesimama hapo nakaa ka-weider fulani hapo. ‘After you say hi, you move back’ (We went to some place to record a cypher with Camp Mulla. I think I wasn’t that known then. We were standing outside the studio and everyone said hey to Camp Mulla, screaming and all. I was standing there like I’m the bodyguard, ‘After you say hi, you move back’.”

So, nilkuwa zile za ‘cool, kumbe huku kumbe hivi ndio kunakuanga. Lakini ilikuwa uptown, so najua naeza enda nao mtaani wasee wabaki zile za, ‘hawa ndio ma-barbie wagani tena?’ (I was like, ‘cool, so this is how it is.’ But it was uptown, so I know we can go back to the hood and people will be like, ‘so, who are these rich kids?'”

Check out the whole video of him telling the story here. Octo’s Ivo Ivo is blazing up the charts right now, and you can order for the Ivo Ivo tees from his Website, octopizzo.com.

Jaguar and Chameleon Collabo

After the epic release of Matapeli, Jaguar is not sitting pretty. The musician/ businessman “amevuka border” into Uganda to do a collabo with the richest musician in East Africa, Dr. Jose Chameleon.

It will be an interesting story to follow considering both musicians have tasted both sides of life having had very humble beginnings. Jaguar and Chameleon are also among the biggest musicians in their respective countries with their songs Matapeli and Valu Valu respectively enjoying massive airplay at the top of the music charts.

Jaguar is a household name in Kenya’s music industry having won several awards with his club-banger Kigeugeu. He is also well known for his philanthropy. Chameleone on the other hand is revered for his stimulating live performances, and is revered as one of East Africa’s most versatile, creative and crowd-pleasing artists.

Let’s a wait and see situation as the two bigwigs do their thing.

Hold Up! Jah Cure and Duane Stephenson coming to Kenya?

I’m trying so hard, with all my might not to get too excited about this since it has not yet been confirmed to us by the Big Tunes Festivals crew (yes, the same guys who brought us Tarrus Riley a month ago).

Jah Cure has always been on the top of Reggae fan’s list of artistes that should come perform in Kenya and now, most of us are about to see that wish come true. Sources have just alerted us that Big Tunes Festivals are currently finishing up deals to bring in International Reggae sensations, Jah Cure and Duane Stephenson for yet another epic concert organised by them (Big Tunes Festivals).

This concert will be in partnership with Dohty Family who are also known to bring in international reggae artistes and is said to be taking place on the 3Rd of November 2012. With the involvement of the Big Tunes Festivals, this might just be a reality, forget about let down concerts like the hyped up Mavado concert that never materialized. This might just be the real deal. Tarrus Riley big (those that were present at the Tarrus Riley concert know what I mean).

I seriously don’t think I have to familiarize you with these two artistes but just incase you are one of those elitist individuals who think you are too good for reggae, here are five of the hardest hitting tunes from Jah Cure and Duane Stephenson.

Blankets and Wine Line-Up Announced

The line-up for the 38th Edition of Blankets & Wine has been announced.

And as always, it features a stellar cast of performers. This time round, we will be having the soulful sounds of Kidum, Harry Kimani who will undoubtedly be welcomed back to the entertainment scene enthusiastically after taking a long hiatus.

Fena Guti will have what i believe should be her third consecutive performance on such a huge stage and i tilt my hat to Muthoni in salutation for her endeavours to bring up Kenyan artists.

Trust that just like the rest, this edition of Blankets will be off the chains! You do not want to miss out on Nairobi’s premier monthly event!

We Are Tired Of The “Esther Arunga Circus”!

This is actually my 2cents on the matter…

But i am tired of hearing about inc*st and homosexuality allegations being levelled against Joseph Hellon. For the record, i respect Hellon. He is the only Kenyan i have ever seen admit to a mistake and apologise after owning up.

I believe that to be rather courageous and for that he earned my respect. And what’s more, he has been silent about all these allegations… My people say that the lion does not turn back when a small dog barks. Food for thought.

And all these unsubstantiated claims are beginning to move from the realm of the absurd and into the realm of the pitiful! You were what i believed to be a reasonable and intelligent professional and for that i respect you. You have now begun to sound like someone who dwells in the land of nightmares -alot like Nali

But that’s beside the point! This whole circus of the absurd must end. The whole manner in which you have gone about “exerting your vengeance” only serves to vindicate Hellon’s image because he comes off as someone trying to move on from the past and you seem to only want to drag him down.

Listen to me if you will and ignore me if you shan’t, the rants have to stop. Finger Of God is dead and buried. This fiasco is dead and buried. If you are truly happy with your new life, as Selam M. Kweli would say, keep thy counsel. This whole affair is just embarrassing!

That is as i said earlier, my humble opinion.

Remember Keitta from BBA Stargame? Here is his debut track, ‘One Boxer’

Big Brother Africa has always been a gateway to never ending opportunities, whether you have talent or not, be sure that once you step out of the BBA house, you will make money out of something. Only a douche bag would sit on this and make nothing from it.

All the while Ghana’s Keitta was in the BBA house, he exposed his musical talents all through, be it in freestyle rap battles or even when they were drunk off their shoes. Keitta even went head to head with Prezzo, along with Uganda’s Kyle in some of the rap battles they had when South Africa’s Keagan tried his best to match up to the crew’s lyrical prowess.

Keitta has now made it official that he is serious about his music and that tracks should be expected from him. In-fact, he is so serious about it that he has just made his music debut with a track about his popular boxers. Remember the boxers he used to walk around in, all day in the house? Yes, hizo hizo!

The track titled ‘One Boxer’ has just been released and you can download it for free right here.

Rabbit releases track dedicated to deceased Kenyan artistes

If there was ever a rapper that has forever maintained depth in lyrics, it should be Rabbit aka Kaka Sungura. Not only does he know to blend in so well with genres of music that are obviously out of his comfort zone, but he also manages to create his own sound from it, making it seem so easy.

The blow that the Kenyan music industry has sufered with every death of an artiste is unforgetable and very much felt. Many have dedicated their music to these fallen heroes, bringing back their memories fresh to our minds. All these music is appreciated but I have to say that so far, none has captured the sadness of their deaths and the triumph of their success, as this song by Rabbit does.

Simple but full of mixed emotions. ‘Where’d you go’ was originally done by Fort Minor but Rabbit has put in his magic and transformed it all up. At the end of the song, he even celebrates some of the Kenyan artistes that have gone under the radar, showing them love all the way.

Kenyan Designer Featured at New York Fashion Week

Kenya might not be a mature fashion market yet, but it is growing, with a couple of high profile runway shows coming up in the last couple of years.

Talented designers have been around for even longer, and some have gone on to some of the biggest fashion stages in the world. Last year, John Kaveke got to showcase his designs at the London Fashion week.

Last week, local designer, Katungulu Mwendwa got the opportunity to showcase her work at the New York Fashion Week.

Moroccanoil held an event dubbed The GenArt’s Fresh Faces in Fashion which featured Spring 2013 collections from the likes of Amanda Lew Kee, Anne Sofie Madsen and more including Katungulu Mwendwa.

She was picked as part of this year’s GenArt Global program. The event has proved to be the launching pad of some of the biggest designers and their gateway into the fashion world.

Damian Marley’s “Beautiful” Comes To Kenya

She first burst into the music scene with a remix of Bamboo’s Compe, a song that rocked the local radio stations when it was released. Well, she is back, this time doing a reggae joint originally done by Bob Marley’s son.

The secular-turned-gospel rapper Michelle AKA Michelle The Brand has redone Damian Marley’s smash hit ‘Beautiful’ singing about a suitor after her love. Rapping in Swahili and Sheng, Michelle asserts that she has already accepted the wooer, “tortoise amejipa in a big big way unaniget get kibonokode.”

Back in the day her ‘Compe remix’ was spot-on that it became an instant hit. Whether ” Beautiful-Damian Marley – MichelleTheBrand refix” works the same wonder, is a wait and see situation. However, one thing is certain; Michelle Kwambo is back on the airwaves. Watch out!

Making Music Out of Depression, She Might Just Be Kenya’s Adele

Michelle Kamau performs songs about pain. Her song Potea is simply dedicated to everyone that hurt her. She might just be Kenya’s Adele.

Her other songs, Kwama Nawe and Mauchungu are about the same subject. One thing, though, she is actually pretty good. She sounds a bit more mature musically than her actual 22 years.

Potea was recorded at Fardeen Productions, which is headed by Mr. Black. It is the same studios where The Pride record. Her previous tracks were recorded at Sub-Sahara Records.

“The songs were written at a time when I was going through a phase of depression.” She employed other writers to write the songs for her: Collo for Kwama Nawe, Mauchungu by Bigsoul. Potea was written by her brother.

But she might not be a depressed artiste for long: “I’m working on better and happier songs at the moment ‘cos that’s how I feel…happy.” Before those songs come out, check out Potea below.

Former TPF5 Contestant Joins a Leading Band in Uganda

Sharon Nalwoga, the Ugandan contestant who emerged as sixth in the recently concluded Tusker Project Fame 5 has joined Zawee Band.

Zawee Band is owned by Ugandan musician Sarah Zawedde and the inclusion of Sharon’s powerful voice is expected to be a major boost to the band. This move by the young Ugandan is all in a bid to break out as a musician, a fate she was aspiring to achieve had she won TPF5.

Sharon was the last Ugandan contestant to get evicted from the show after her fellow countryman was shown the door in earlier in the show. She now joins other former Ugandan TPF contestants, Esther (winner TPF2) and Davis (winner TPF4) who are now actively involved in the music industry having acquired experience from the EABL Reality Show.

We wish Sharon all the best in her new venture.

Kenyan chef gets worldwide TV syndication

Many of us are synonymous with Mercury Lounge at ABC place, and for many of you it is your hang out of choice come Friday evenings. But how many of you have eaten at Seven Seafood and grill right next door?Well, it turns out Kiran Jethwa, head chef at Seven Seafood and Grill just might be Africa’s answer to English TV’s favourite chef -Gordon Ramsey.

seven2Kiran Jethwa, proprietor and head chef at Seven Seafood and grill announced back in August the launching of his cooking series Tales from the Bush Larder to a fun and lively private screening at his restaurant.

The 13 x 24-minute series, which takes viewers on a culinary tour of Kenya, was coproduced by Zuku and Kenya-based Quite Bright Films, and is one of the first original titles Zuku has been involved in. Each episode sees Kiran Jethwa meeting locals, conversing with the locals (often in Swahili) harvesting local ingredients and then making a “bush meal” in the Kenyan wild. Another meal is then prepared in a professional kitchen, also based off of fresh ingredients indigenous to Kenya.

Tales from the Bush larder began airing September 6th on Zuku. Like the methali begins “Kizuri chajiuza…” Anglo-Dutch producer-distributor Off the Fence almost immediately made a five-year distribution deal with pay-TV channel Zuku for the rights to distribute the series worldwide.

The COO of Off The Fence Darrel James called the show “Visually stunning and content rich.” Watch Kiran Jethwa work his culinary skills using authentic Kenyan ingredients such as Nile perch from Lake Turkana, African wild honey and wild fowl, Swahili prawns, Dorobo lamb.

Here is a sample (the series premiere) of what the show will be like:
