Huddah Monroe Comes Out In Support Of MPs, Says She Will Enjoy The Bonus

Huddah Monroe has come out to lend her voice to a battared lot… Kenyan Mps.

The MPigs are probably not shocked that the controversial socialite has come out to support them but brave Kenyans who answer to the name #KOT have been put off her and her sentiments.

She lent the Mpigs her voice and that resulted in Kenyans On Twitter bashing her in sheer disgust and with such venom but she has stood her ground.

Her tweets had the following messages to Kenyans:

: Add MP bonus,I will need that money! My lace wig costs 47k ,I need to keep up the good looks! O_o

: I should not be complaining on ,most of that bonus ,I’m sure ill be enjoying it too.

And thiis was all after unleashing nudies…

Uncle Chim Tuna shall be giving his opinion on the whole matter tomorrow. For now, have your say on the ocomment section.

Jimmy Gait’s ‘Appointment’ video released

Jimmy Gait is finally done with his latest video, ‘appointment’. The song came out a couple of weeks back and the reception was just amazing. This is a real gospel worship song and you know just how much Kenyans love this kind of music.

It is about time Jimmy went back to his roots (worship songs) and this is just it. In-fact, this is one of the best that I’ve heard from him so far and it is just lovely. Simple and well composed lyrics, for a simple and humble song.

The video doesn’t have any ‘madoido’ at all, which makes it all the more lovely for a gospel song.

Check out the video below.

Alisha Popat drops her new video

Remember the beautiful Indian girl that Mustafa featured in his track, ‘Mena Kyaar Piya’ a while back? Well, she is back!

This time, Alisha Popat went solo in her new track and the voice that this beauty has, leaves you yearning for more as soon as the song breaks. Her new track, ‘Oh let the rain’ has already been released, along with the video.

The song is an Africa Rise Up production and has seen many take part in this mood lifting song that is guaranteed to leave you smiling. Did I mention that this lady’s voice is just off the hook?

This might just be the next African stars… from Kenya

Ohhh this is just great. After listening to this track and even watching its video, I have the same feeling that I had when I first listened to Sauti Sol. The Africa in it is just breath taking. They even managed to use a video that showcases hard knock life, to express joy… What the hell?

Alphabet and Mesh Mfalme might just be on their way to stardom and appreciation for this beautiful and soulful track titled, ‘My potter’, which is a gospel song by the way. ‘Potter’ referrers to God.

They git English, Kiswahili sanifu and even sheng in the same track and they blended it all so well. They make it look so easy in this song. The track has a little bit of house, kwaito and some African beats fused to it. I don’t even know what to call. I really don’t and I’m done trying.

Let me just sit back and enjoy the track. You should do the same too. Check it out.

Kendi’s new video from Ogopa Deejays finally out

After quitting Calif Records and walking out head high, Kendi is finally back, sexier than before, hotter than ever. It seems Ogopa Deejays really did manage to bring out her sexy character, just like Kendi hoped they would.

After Jua Cali called Kendi and Q-Tasi ‘lazy artistes’, Kendi decided not to look back, but make something out of it, and this was the result. Don’t you just love how she looks in this new video, ‘uko fresh’?

In full white and delight, it would seem as though Kendi is off to a new start, which is what most artistes need after facing tough hurdles such as those that she went through..

Check out Kendi’s latest work below and tell us where she is better off (Calif Records or Ogopa Deejays).

SAD: MALI TV Show Facing Cancellation

It is probably one of the best shows on TV right now but the beloved MALI might not be coming back to the screen.

The shows actors went on a break in June and were meant to resume shooting in December but they have not been offered new contracts yet, which might be an indication that there are no plans for a return.

But then again, December might still be far away and there’s still hope. Well, some of the actors have decided to move on and some have taken up other contracts with productions that might conflict with MALI’s shooting should it resume production.

Tony Maina, who plays MALI CEO confirmed that he left the show and stated his reasons: “There was a lot of belittlement and turning noses up at actors, which  was demoralizing and counter-productive. This, I felt was not right given that they were sacrificing a lot for the show both both fiscally and emotionally. Due to issues to do with alignment of perceptions and expectations, I felt that perhaps I may have given all I could under the circumstances. And since nothing was working, I decided to leave during the break because these differences  with production were beginning to become serious.”

An actor who refused to be named to avoid blacklisting in the industry said that the producer, Alison Ngibuini, threatened to continue with the show with the main cast and drop all the other actors when they made certain demands. Tony confirms, “Yes, she kept repeating this especially when there was a clamour for better terms and renegotiation of the contract.”

He also confirmed that other actors have left too, or are in limbo pending the resolution of issues: “It’s true Conrad Makeni (who plays Fadhili) left the show. A number of cast members have left the show. Some left before the deadlock while others especially after the deadlock in June and July. So far, Ken (Jamal Nasoor) who was cafe manager, Ron (Nic Wang’ondu), Bishop (David Gitika), Captain Opondo (Odek).”

He clarified that these actors would be fine coming back once issues have been addressed. It now remains to be seen if the show will remain on air with a different cast or resolve its problems.

Is Nairobi Half Life Not Kenyan Enough for the Oscars? The Actors Address the Critics

Nairobi Half Life is one film that has made Kenyans proud. But some have said that the fact that it was funded by Germans with facilitators from outside the country, maybe it should not be considered as a Kenyan effort.

And so we asked two members of the Nairobi Half Life cast to respond to Nathan Collett, a local film director, on his claims that NHL will miss out on the Oscar because of an Academy Award rule that says the film’s creative talent should have come from the country of production.

The question came after Joseph K. Wairimu mentioned that his first film was Kibera Kid, which was coincidentally (or is it ironically) directed by Collett himself.

Ghafla!: “The Kibera Kid director, is that Nathan Collett?”

Joseph K. Wairimu: “Yes.”

G!: “He was one of the guys who were saying that Nairobi Half Life is probably not Kenyan enough and it might fail getting into the Oscars because of that. Now, you were on set while it was being made. The rule he was trying to argue on was the creative must have predominantly come from the country the film was made. You guys working on it, were the creative people mostly Kenyan?”

Olwenya Maina: “Everybody is entitled to their opinion but I think he’s not factual, he’s not that for sure because the script itself, how was it European? How is it Western? First of all, we can’t say acting is our thing. So, generally, there are no Africans who’ve written more books about acting. They’re European, in fact not even American. [Nairobi Half Life] from every department, the people who dominated were Africans but the mentors were from outside.”

G!: “The writing department was all Kenyan. Three Kenyans–and unlike other departments–the supervisor was also Kenyan. The entire writing team was Kenyan, not even the facilitator was from outside the country.”

Joseph K. Wairimu: “And also another thing, he should also be reminded that before he came and produced and directed Kibera Kid, he was acting on an apprentice kind of umbrella. And from that, he was the one who was directing it, and he should give credit where it deserves where Film Africa is giving us that platform to go and share our stories. And all this experts were just shadows behind the people who were actually doing it. On set, we were with Tosh Gitonga, he was the one who was calling the shots. He shouldn’t forget that it was a training workshop.”

G!: “I think he was mostly talking because of Tom Tykwer because he was the supervising director.”

OM: “Why are we discussing him as if his opinion is the only one that counts?”

G!: “I want you to make it clear that this was totally Kenyan.”

OM: “It is totally Kenyan because were even given the freedom to change what we feel. Even Tosh would tell him, ‘no, I can’t do that.’ For instance, we got a stuntman to teach us how to die, how we should fall, how we should run and such things. Being shot in the head and then you kneel down and then fall on your back. It was so plastic, that old-school way off acting an action film. So we had that freedom as actors to say ‘no, I can’t do that, I can do this, this line I have to change it.'”

This interview was conducted last week. Yesterday, the Academy Awards Committee confirmed Nairobi Half Life as the first Kenyan official entry for Oscars.

9con Making A Music Comeback

He calls himself the Nigerian connection. The Nigerian singer, actor, model and International relations student at USIU is set to make a comeback in the music scene after briefly taking a breaking to appear on local TV productions.

Remembered for his roles in MTV’s Shuga: Love, Sex and Money; and NTV’s Mali, for a moment we forgot that 9con is an artiste. Well, he is set to release a new single titled, “My Lady”. Arguably a love song, 9con is however quick to point that the song is not inspired by any love story. Born Ifeco Ikubese, 9con is currently working with the Taurus Music Group which is also behind his yet-to-be-released track.

9con has also featured with big African acts like Timaya (Nigeria), Wyre (Kenya), Redsan (Kenya), and has also performed on the same stage with notable artistes like D’banj, Sasha, Dare Art Alade and several other African artistes.  He has won several music awards and was recently nominated for his song, KOLO featuring Wyre at the 2011 KISIMA Awards.

Let’s wait and see what if his music is as good as his acting.

Collo Convinces Sauti Sol to Sing For His Daughter (Video)

Collo has been up and running dropping tune after tune for the last two months featuring in P-Unit, Octopizzo’s and Didge’s songs before releasing his album. But now the self-proclaimed King wa Rap has a new video. He mellows it down with a collabo with Sauti Sol in this great piece called “Tawala”. This is one of the singles from his new album Since 85.

Collo put together the song to express his deep love for his daughter Tawala. The video has amazing clips of his daughter and perfectly befits the feeling of the song. This remarkable video is a so touching (those of you who have kids will agree).

Kenyan artistes going anime in their videos

Is it just me or are Kenyan artistes taken aback by animated music videos? International artistes have used them and the reception of the fans to their videos has so far been great.

We have watched as some of our very own artistes, mostly rappers, have attempted this form of video production, animating themselves, thus making the videos more interesting and illustrative, but has the reception been good for them so far?
Jua Cali tried it on his ‘miaka’ song, and I have to say, he really tried on that one. Fans loved it too. The fact that his anime version looked so like him, made it original and acceptable. Failure comes when the animated character looks nothing like the artistes it is meant to represent. Jua Cali pulled it off in this one.
Just A Band is another music group that has captured this art perfectly. Their video for the song ‘Iwinyo Piny’ is not bad at all. In-fact, it is one of the best efforts in music video animations I’ve seen in Kenya.
Octopizzo tried it out too with his track ‘Octo montanna’. The video was uploaded on YouTube but was later brought down for reasons not revealed to us… yet.
And now, Kenrazy has just joined the list with his latest track, ‘GI-RF’, which is fully animated. Check it out below and give us your honest feedback.
All in all, I can safely say that we are on the right track with this animated music videos. A bit more work on them, and we’ll be good most definitely.

King Of Bold: How it went down

So for those of you not in the know, Ghafla All Stars were invited to the Nakuru edition of the King of Bold and mek i tell you, it was off the chains like a rabid Rottweiler!

Joe Mfalme was tearing it up on the vinyl and when the acts came on, everyone performed their hearts out. Dj Joe picked up from a slow start to his set then ended up killing the crowd!

But before we go there, the good chaps at EABL and Pilsner king of Bold in specific know what VIP section means. These guys were not jonzing around, they put in that work and the results were splendid indeed! The VIP section was indeed a privilege to be in unlike virtually every other VIP section Kenyan shows purport. James Ingram show organisers should be taking notes right about now!

The celebrities in attendance were of the a-list variety. From Bamboo, Abbas, Madtraxx and Juliani. And the performances were kray! But to be honest, the night belonged to Juliani. When Juliani was announced as one of the performers of the night, most people wondered how he, a Christian would fit in and move the crowd of imbibers but he did. And when he shouted, “Wapi nduru ya Yesu?” wild screams and cheers rent the air for a good 5minutes.

One thing i can vouch for about Juliani is that he is worth every penny when you pay to see him perform. He is lively, energetic and entertaining. Juliani actually enjoyed banter with the mammoth crowd while on stage: a feat few Kenyan artists can replicate.

All in all, the concert was well attended and organised. The security was heavy. Security ensured it’s presence was felt and this honestly made me and a host of other revelers feel reassured.

The performers in order of their performances were:

Bamboo

Abbas

Madtraxx

Juliani

K-south

So from that line up i’m sure you know the night was killed dead! Pint was going for 110/- for a Pilsner and 150/- for the rest of EABL’s repertoire.

So music? Check! Pint? Check! Security? Check! What more would you ask for? Make sure you catch this concert when it rolls through your hood next time!

From a “Chips Funga” to a Manager

After so much drama rocked his music career having fallen out with Calif Records, Q-Tasi is a resilient man. Rising from a street urchin to creating a buzz with his hits “Ocha” and “Chips Funga” (with the later blowing out of proportion), the musician is now emerging as an entrepreneur.

The former Calif Records singer has now formed a talent management company called “Q-Tasi Entertainment”. The company will also feature a dance and theatrical performance known as “Ai-do-dance Choreography Art Centre”. Meanwhile, Q-Tasi is currently working with Maichblaq and Provoke planning to soon be releasing jams according to HBR.

Q-Tasi was late last month on music tour at the Coast to promote his music. Nicknamed “Narudi Ocha Tour” the artiste thrilled his fans with his hits “Ocha” and “Chips Funga” considering the two songs were a major success. Q-Tasi alongside Colonel Moustapha was chosen by drinks manufacturer, Guinness, to headline their new campaign in the Kenyan market: The Guinness Ticket To Greatness campaign back in August.

From a Big Brother Representative to an Actor and Now a Politician?

Not so many people can do so much in a short period of time in succession. But she has managed to juggle between her acting roles, charity work and now she wants to add another feather to her cap. Meet the gorgeous Milicent Mugadi.

The former Big Brother contestant, Millicent has officially joined politics. Milicent who has a drive for improving people’s livelihood was recently in her former hood, Ziwani, helping clean the estate and now she is set to host a youth motivation seminar.

Millicent is vying for Ziwani County Representative post. “My mother was a very great political campaigner. She is the face behind Gerishon Kirima, Joe Aketch, Fred Gumo and Maina Kamanda’s successful political careers. On the other hand, I’m very passionate about youth affairs but I’m not ready to talk about my political ambitions at the moment. I will let you know when the right time comes,” Millicent said.

However on Sunday, she made the big announcement via Facebook.I hereby declare my interest in vying for the post of Ziwani county rep. Having been born, raised and lived in Ziwani, I know i have what it takes, I have my interest for the needs of Ziwani residents at heart. Walk with me and lets make Ziwani a better place!!!”

Well, let’s see how this goes.

Kenyan Artistes Feeling “Sufficiently Philanthropic”

A section of Kenyan artistes are known for their benevolence towards charity where they mostly contribute in kind. This time, however, musicians under the Music Copyright Society of Kenya (MCSK) will now contribute proceeds from their ringback tones towards the peace initiative that they launched last week.

MCSK together with its 40 artistes involved in this campaign wants to contribute something tangible apart from the free performances that they will be staging countrywide. The donations are set to be channeled towards the campaign for the entire week.

And just to ensure there is integrity in the project, it was revealed that there is already a team in place to oversee the entire venture. The transparency team will oversee that the right people benefit and not masqueraders.

2M Up For Grabs at Kisima

Kenyan musicians now have a chance to walk away with a greater fortune this year during the The 10th Edition of the Kisima Awards. 2 million shillings is what at stake for the overall winner during the awards.

Slated for 2nd November, the awards has come to be recognized as the equivalent of other international awards much similar as it is done for MTV Awards, KORA Awards, Channel O Awards nominees and winners. Photo of the Day: Jalang’o the Priest

Jalang’o might just be one of Kenya’s funniest personalities. He has proved himself from his earlier films (Kibrit Olwar E Pi) and TV show (Papa Shirandula).

His record as a top funnyman has seen him get a gig as radio show host (The Big Breakfast) and now he is the official Niko Na Safaricom emcee. And it is during the Kisumu leg of the tour where he appeared in this costume. We’ll assume it’s a costume. Click on the photo to enlarge.

Sexiest wives and girlfriends of Kenyan celebrities

They got the looks, style, and they manage to make the news every once in a while. Their relationships with our Kenyan celebrities have become somewhat of a big deal. Here are a few of the sexiest.

5. Nyambane’s Linda Muthama

She has had more controversies than her husband but she is not one to be put down easily. Still doing gospel music, she isn’t so bad for her age.

4. Prezzo’s Goldie

3. Octopizzo’s girlfriend

Pic of the Day: Octopizzo’s Hot Mzungu Wife

This mzungu got it going on. She can get it. Not only does Octopizzo know his business, he seems to also know how to pick his women… or was he picked???

2. Nick Mutuma’s Bridgette Shighadi

She is a model and a good one at that. With the rumors going around about Nick Mutuma right now, I’m not so sure about this any more.

1. Juliani’s Brenda Wairimu

Julz

A lucky man he is. This lady has the fairness of the fairy tale girl, Snow White.

Kenrazy unleashes his new animated video. Take a look

After releasing hundreds of mixtapes all year round, Kenrazy has now dropped a video for one of his singles. This is however not just an ordinary video. He and his Ghipuka crew have decided to get animated.

Kenrazy’s latest video, ‘GI-RF’ is more hilarious than any other music that’s ever come out of the Ghipuka crew. Elfayo does the introduction, so you know it’s nothing but humor all the way.

I personally love the way they introduce the beat, with Rap Damu chanting along as the song proceeds.

Well, the quality of the graphics is not top notch but it is too interesting for you to hate. The effort Kenrazy and his team put into this should be acknowledged. Credit given where it’s due. Not many Kenyan artistes have tried to do animated videos before, and this was worth the try.

Check out the video below.

Kenyan Singer Featured in the New York Times

It has been a good year for Nina Ogot. She was one of the 32 musicians from across the U.S. to participate in the One Beat project. Last month, her video for Wololo won best video at the Africa Student Film Festival.

Now the afro-soul singer has now been featured in the New York Times. In an article about One Beat, they cite the singer’s work and participation in the initiative. The One Beat project is a cultural diplomacy effort by the State Department.

Nina Ogot is a multilingual artiste who performs in English, Swahili, French, Lingala and Luo. She won a Kalasha Award for Issa as Best Original Score last year. Nina Ogot was also a radio presenter at Radio France International and TV presenter on Citizen’s music show, Afro-Dizzia.

Presenting: The Newest King of Radio

Forget about Maina Kageni, Mwalimu King’ang’i, Mbusii and the likes. He is the unrivalled radio kingpin that goes unrecognized but he is the “bawse” in what he does.

Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, I present to you the MATATU DRIVER. Better known as dere wa mathree, this guy has the last say when it comes to radio world (at least in Kenya). How? Take a look: you hop onto a jav and the speakers are blaring with Classic 105 or Ghetto Radio music, maybe you (and others on board) would like to listen to something else but because you think you might get a rude response which will probably spoil your otherwise good day, you just shut and “enjoy” the music because you can’t do jerk. Yaani, this is the guy that determines what station the passengers will listen to.

Woe unto you when you step into a mathree with raucous outmoded music or something you don’t understand; sorry, you will have to endure that till you get to your destination guys. So next time you are in a jav and the “radio king” decides you’ll listen to something you consider too outrageous just reach for your earphones or just get off at the next stage (if you’re that uncomfortable).

Ghafla! Blocked In MultiMedia University For Distracting Students

Yes, you heard right, Ghafla! is now one of those sites that places of work are being forced to restrict!

We got the news when a certain student of Multi Media University named Wakini Njogu alerted us on Twitter. She said, “Funny how Multi Media Uni’s computer labs have blocked Ghafla!Kenya’s website… I don’t understand!” We queried her further as to why she thought Ghafla! would be restricted in their network, and she replied, “Nothing that Ghafla!Kenya writes is worth sensoring… especially to campus students! Maybe whoever did that hates the site!”

It was time for a Ghafla!Investigation.

Lucky for us, our trusty internet marketer Chege Miati had some experience as a system administration intern at MMU. He knew some guys there. Bada-bing, bada-boom, we shortly had the number of one of the administrators of the network, named Benson. Benson told us that he and a couple other network admins(named Gerald and Robert) block certain websites when they notice an abnormal amount of traffic leading to them on their servers. Another criteria for blocking is that they look for sites which are not for research purposes, as that is the primary use of their computer lab. They do this to conserve traffic to the in order for students to focus on research.

This is actually hilarious for the guys in the office, as I had jokingly told them when we were starting Ghafla! that if we were to get blocked by offices and such, we would definitely be doing something right! Didn’t really expect it to pass, but life always has surprises up its sleeve…

Local Actor Gets Death Threats. Police Tell Him to Ignore Them

Getting death threats through mobile phones is the latest fad in Kenya and celebs have not been spared. Bobby Muga was one of the latest recipients of the calls. The actor has previously been seen on NTV’s Wash & Set, Demigods and Noose of Gold.

The actor posted a cell phone number on his Facebook and called out the owner saying that he had made threats on his life: “0726466214 The owner of this number kindly will you stop threatening me through text messages??? The law is so clear on such issues remember.”

According to actors.co.ke, this is not the first time Bobby has received death threats and that the police have adviced him to ignore the messages.

Bobby Muga is most famously known for being one of the first actors to portray a stereotypical homosexual character on a local TV show, something that still has not been attempted after his turn. He played a gay beautician on Wash & Set.

Brenda Wairimu speaks her mind on gay Club Envy

After we were done with our interview with the lovely Mali actress, Brenda Wairimu, we managed to squeeze her into our weekly ‘hit or miss’ section that we are so fond of doing. Keeping it real and saying it like it is, with our own opinions of-course, we got straight to it.

Topic of the ‘Ghafla!Hit or Miss’ with Brenda Wairimu was the new un-official gay pub, Club Envy. After tacos was closed down, a replacement had to be found. This was it.

Ghafla’s Chege, being homophobic and all, went all out on this club’s, saying it is a 100% miss. “I will be going home one day late at night, drunk as hell, then I see two men kissing… crazy…” Chege said.

Brenda on the other hand is not at all bothered by this. “If you are not okay with it, why would you go to the club? Keep away,” she said.

This was a really hilarious and heated discussion. Watch the video below and feel free to respond with comments. Don’t hold back.

Kendi to drop her first single since leaving Calif Records

Ambition is what is driving this artiste and progress is the result. Kendi had problems with her previous recording studio, Calif Records and left the stable after they did not seem to see eye to eye.

Jua Cali called them out as lazy artistes (her and Q-Tasi) and I think this motivated her to prove them wrong. Kendi moved into Ogopa Deejays and she is now about to display her new songs under new recording house.

Kendi is set to release her new track and video which is all done by Ogopa Deejays and most just can’t wait to see it. To judge which recording house brings out her art more.

I guess we’ll just have to wait and see this one.

List: The Hottest Gospel Songs in the Country Right Now

Crossover 101 has released the list of the best gospel songs at the moment. From Juliani to Kriss Ehh Baba, this might just be an indication of what the hottest tracks are right now.

And if we go by the list, Gloria Muliro is the most in-demand artiste at the moment, not only because she has more than one song in the chart, but because two of her tracks occupy the first and second position.

The list has only two non-Kenyan songs, which is an indication of the popularity local gospel music enjoys. Kenyan artistes whose songs take the rest of the spots are BMF and Eko Dydda.

Check out the list of the eight biggest songs at the moment below.

1. Sitolia – Gloria Muliro & Willy Paul
2. Kando – Gloria Muliro
3. Exponential Potential – Juliani
4. Rudi Nyumbani – BMF
5. Vichani – Mag 44 featuring Pompi
6. Beautiful People – Eko Dydda
7. Katikia Yesu – Kriss Ehh Baba
8. Go Get It – Mary Mary

From Trying to Be a Priest to Playing Rap*sts & Gangsters

When the two Nairobi Half Life leads (Joseph K. Wairimu and Olwenya Maina) came to Ghafla! for an interview, they revealed a lot about the earlier part of their career and gave a lot of insight into the film that has won many people’s hearts.

Some may know Olwenya Maina from his extensive stage work and on-screen roles. The most prominent being Shuga, where he plays a rap*st. You might also remember him as a sleazy janitor from MALI.

With all his sneaky roles–including his latest as a gangster–it’s might be hard to believe that the guy once wanted to be a priest. He told us more about it in the interview, read transcript below.

Ghafla!: “You always play weird characters. Like, you were a gangster in this one, you were a rap*st in Shuga.”

Olwenya Maina: “These characters follow me.”

G!: “Which is weird, because in another interview you told me you were almost a pastor at some point. “

OM: “Yes, I wanted to become a priest. That was at the forefront of my aspirations but then again, acting took over. I just realized that I was acting a priest all this long so I decided to go chase it.”
