Brenda Wairimu: We tried it out with DJ Hypnotic but it just didn’t work

The stories of these two dating were everywhere, especially after the discovery that Brenda Wairimu and Juliani were dating. This made everything awkward and still sounds like fact for most people out there.

Not to worry. As usual Ghafla! is here to set things straight, straight from the horse’s mouth. No hearsay or anything of the sort. In our recent interview with the beautiful Brenda Wairimu, you know too well that we had to sneak in this question.

So, we asked about the rumor and Brenda made it clear that she and DJ Hypnotic had tried to get it on, but it just didn’t work. maybe Juliani was the better man, or it just simply didn’t work. Either way, she set it straight,

“The problem with the meadia today is that, if we are seen hanging out together, they will just assume we are dating. I don’t want to label it, but, we hang out, and it didn’t work out,” she said.

Check it all out in the video below.

Brenda Wairimu followed by a bus… driven by a stalker

Our interview with Brenda Wairimu was going very well. In-fact, it was so good and hilarious that everyone in the office laughed throughout the interview as information was slowly being revealed to us.

It however just got really weird when when we asked Brenda Wairimu whether she has ever had a stalker and to what extent it frightened her. Well, apart from her wannabee father who had stalked her for a while now, she revealed another queer stalker.

This one was just dumb though. According to Brenda, a bus followed her… literally. Dude was on her trail, driving a bus. It got that serious. Check out the interview below.

Rufftone Set to Walk down The Aisle

He has brought you tracks that have topped gospel charts, started his own production house (Lampstand Records) and even jumped into the clothing line business (Ruffwear International) but one thing he has never shown you is his love life.

Well, it now emerges that Rufftone (real name Roy Mwatia) will be walking down the aisle with his sweetheart and fellow Gospel musician, Crystal before the year comes to a close. Speaking to Word Is, Rufftone revealed that he will be leaving the bachelors’ club in December. “I have finally made up my mind not to cross over to 2013 without putting a ring on her finger,” said Rufftone.

The two love birds have been dating behind the scenes for three years now since meeting in studio. Rufftone and Crystal have been cohabiting and rumour mills were rife last year in June that the two had clandestinely tied the knot.

All the best Rufftone and Crystal.

Brenda Wairimu talks about her sex scene on Shuga and other series

Oh my! It was crazy. It was hilarious. Apart from the fact that our Uncle Chim Tuna forgot about Brenda Wairimu’s sex scene on Shuga, she actually had to remind him of it, everything else was… should I say… revealing.

Knowing that Brenda Wairimu is now dating the great gospel rapper, Juliani, we had to find out how making out on set and having sex scenes affect the real relationships and everything else.

Turns out that it’s just work and nothing more to it. Pretty professional, huh? That must be some really calm and collected, not to mention understanding guy too, huh? I would go ballistic, if it were me.

Any way, she gave it to us straight. Sex scenes and making out on set cannot even turn you on, given that everyone in the room is watching the two of you and taking notes. Personally, that wouldn’t be a hindrance for me. But then again, it really isn’t a big deal for Brenda. Or is it? Check out the video below.

Akon Confirms his Nairobi Performance (Video)

Here is for you all ye doubting Thomases who didn’t believe it when Ghafla! first broke it that Akon will be coming to Kenya for a performance this month.

Well, Akon is just confirming that in the video below saying that he will be in Nairobi for his first ever concerts on October the 27th and 28th 2012. Video confirmations have always been insisted upon by most promoters since some big artistes are elusive when it comes to staging performances.

The most recent artiste to do so was Uganda’s Chameleone before his performance in Nairobi recently.

Watch the video below;

Abbas and Ukoo Flani to perform together on the same stage

A performance by hip hop legends? On the same stage? Yes. It is indeed going to happen. A lyrical day it will be, and all for peace. I love how artistes are now spending most of their energies on Peace promoting songs and projects. It just goes to show that some of us actually learnt something from the past unfortunate events.

The Upendo 2012 Peace Concert will be going down on Friday the 26th of October at the Goethe Institute Auditorium. This concert will be hosted by an art oriented community based organisation known as Pamoja Amani Upenda (P.A.U).

The line up of artistes to perform on this day is strictly hip hop and hot. Some of them are, Abbas Kubaff, Ukoo Flani, Nafsi Huru, Kaladze Vidze, Newrobi pupetteers, ZingZang acrobats, Radi Cultural group, Lavosti, Kennet B, L-ness and Sugar, just to mention a few.

Entry is free. See you there.

Kenyan Actor to Star in a Top American Situation Comedy

After being recognized as the best recurring character (Dr. Jeffrey Cole) in television series House, Kenyan-born actor Edi Gathegi is headed for the silver-screen to star in ABC’s newest sitcom (situation comedy), Family Tools, early next year.

Edi has had a good run in the American film industry having made an appearance in Gone Baby Gone, a 2007 film as Cheese. He has also featured in the as Laurent in the films Twilight, its sequel The Twilight Saga: New Moon and Darwin in X-Men: First Class. Clearly this guy is as good as it gets.

Born in Nairobi, Gathegi grew up in California and his acting career started like an “accident”. He was more interested in playing basketball and was good at it, until he injured his knee; this plunged him into a depression so he took up an acting class as an “easy course”. That is where he discovered his love for acting.

Family Tools is set to premier on ABC in 2013.

Photo Gallery: How it went down at the Blankets and Wine yesterday (7th October 2012)

It was yet another lovely edition of the legendary Blankets and Wine event that has everybody coming out in their shades, dressed to impress, wine in hand, and ‘shuka’ on grass. This is one of the most laid back and exciting monthly events that we have.

This edition had Juliani on stage along with Harry Kimani and others. An epic one indeed. If you missed it, this is how it went down, courtesy of Quaint Photography.

Holy Dave Announces a New Track

Holy Dave has admittedly been keeping a low profile lately. Music-wise at least.

Now the rapper has revealed that he is about to hit the fans with something new next week.

Here is his message: “A lot of ya’ll are saying that I’ve been quiet. Well, next week you’ll know why I’ve been hibernating. New music alert!

A few weeks back, Holy Dave gave Ghafla! a glimpse of a yet-to-be-released track called I’m sorry. Check it out here.

Kenrazy bigs up Ghafla!Kenya on ‘Stella Stella Stella’ remix

The energy this guy has in recording songs is just phenomenal. Kenrazy has released more than 100 mixtapes so far and he is still making more. Always in the studio doing something that gives back to the Kenyan music industry. Sometimes, even appreciating some of the artistic talent through the songs, like say, his ‘Stella Stella Stella’ remix that he released just recently.

In this song, he appreciates Stella Mwangi’s efforts to put Kenya on the map, and goes even further to give out shout outs to the more prominent and authoritative media houses and artistes as well.

I have to say that we really did not expect this. An artiste louding us (Ghafla!Kenya) in their song? We are trully humbled.

Thank you Kenrazy. This is hot!

On Brenda Wairimu’s bleaching rumors…

Brenda Wairimu is arguably one of the most beautiful and talented actresses that the Kenyan film industry has brought up, and there is no doubt about that.

Being that good at what you do has its perks, like say, being on Ghafla! Yeah! I said it. So you know we couldn’t waste any more time before having her at our offices and getting to know all about her personally. You’d be really surprised about what we managed to get from her from this interview. Really interesting stuff.

For instance, remember the rumors that were abound about Brenda Wairimu having bleached herself? Especially on twitter? Well, we had to get to the bottom of this, as that’s what we at Ghafla do. Factual to the core.

Turns out that the rumors were just that. Rumors. Nothing more. Brenda Wairimu made it clear that her completion is natural and that she has never, nor will ever, bleach her skin. She even mentioned that her mother is British, hence the completion.

Check out the interview below to get it straight from the horse’s mouth.

Giving Jackiwa MADDD COMPE, meet CIARA MAZAKWE

Am not trying to be a troll or anything but if you have listened to/watched Jackiwa’s songs am sure you know where you can rank her music. Well, there seems to be another artiste who is giving Jackiwa a run for her cash.

A quick spot-check on her YouTube channel reveals that Ciara already has five videos and she’s raring to go. Without much ado, check out her latest jam, African Time, below and be the judge…

Get some sentimental floetry right here

The spoken word art has been well established and grasped in Kenya, such that poetry is actually a hobby for most of these artistes.

In this video below, you will get to see some of Kenya’s poetry at its best, away from the spoken word events and what not.

This is as raw as it gets.

Sex and the City’s Actress in Kenya’s Illegal Ivory Trade

If you are a fan of Sex and The City you definitely recognize her but am quite sure you never knew that she is a patron of the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust in Kenya.

Kristin Davis isn’t just saying no to ivory, she’s taken to calling it the “new blood diamond.” The actress, best known for playing Charlotte Goldenblatt (née York) on HBO’s Sex and the City, became the very public face of the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust on last week when she hosted a black-tie dinner in London to fete the charity’s new anti-ivory campaign.

“Ivory is basically a blood diamond,” Davis said. “If you buy it, you’re buying the new blood diamonds.” In view of this, the actress is already planning a trip to Kenya in a bid to fortify the fight against ivory trade. The actress will be travelling with her one-year-old daughter and she was so upbeat about it. “I figure if I’m going to mess her sleep up it should be for something really good. Kids go to the nursery all the time and they love it,” she said. “Little elephants are so cute and they play soccer, and they get in the mud.”

From Mariga to Kanye: Local & International Celebs Kinda Endorsing Octopizzo’s Clothing Line

Octopizzo’s Ivo Ivo Ivo is picking up steam, with the Prime Minister kinda endorsing it last week.

But besides that, the rapper has also convinced other celebrities to wear the latest line in his clothing label. And for those who can’t wear it, he forces them to. By forcing, we mean photoshop.

The initial photos had Size 8, Jay-Z, P-Unit’s Frasha and Gabu (check them out here). This time, the gallery features legendary DJ Pinye, soccer star MacDonald Mariga, Kanye, MOG’s Tony and Kenya’s dancehall king Wyre.

Check out the photos below.

Nairobi Half Life Cast Members Explain How the Film’s Success Had Them Locked Out of the Screenings

Joseph K. Wairimu and Olwenya Maina, the two main characters from Nairobi Half Life dropped by Ghafla! from an interview where they talked about the movie and their career.

But an interesting thing that came out of one of the questions was how the actors have been locked out of the film’s screening after finding the screenings had sold out. The revelation came when the actors were asked about the number of times they had watched the film. Read the transcipt below.

Olwenya Maina: “I’ve watched it three times. I have gone to watch it five times but two times I’ve found it totally booked. You guys, whoever is doing that.”

Ghafla!: “Even the stars can’t make it in.”

OM: “It’s quite a success.”

Joseph K. Wairimu: “I’ve managed to watch it twice becuase last week last week I was in a peace trip with a certain institution known as Sponsored Art for Education, SAFE Ghetto. And the other reason is that Kenyans have come out in large numbers and we were surprised and shocked when we appeared there wanting to watch the movie but we were amazed that it was all sold out. So we had to stay outside.”

G!: “Did the stuff recognize you and try to maybe get you in?”

OM: “They do. And then we can walk in free but then again that is so Kenyan.”

G!: “So, you guys actually pay?”

OM: “Yeah, we do. We actually go and pay and buy popcorn and sit down like everyone else.”

Kenya Doesn’t Have A Truly Talented Artist!

Earlier this week i did a piece in which i basically said that there was no reason for Kenyans to have paid 10,000/- proper sidi for the James Ingram concert VIP section.

I stand by those sentiments now more than ever. I was met by a barrage of emotional old foggies who couldn’t fathom how i could blaspheme against their taste thus. Afterall, isn’t everyone above 27years of age infallible?

The reason why i dig in to protect my stance is the fact they all spoke so greasy about Kenyan artists. These guys basically said that Kenyan artists are sub-par and mediocre at best “Kenya has no truly talented artist!” declared one. I did my best to defend Kenyan artists but to no avail.

Here it is, Uncle Chim Tuna feels that if you are of the sentiment that paying 10,000/- for VIP tickets means you have taste, you are either delusional or conceited! Paying such sums for a person way past his prime (there, i said it) is in such bad taste! You must be of the ilk that consider bland gold Rolexes and Omegas that cost an arm and a leg the epitome of class just because it costs the same amount as a Kidney in India rather than a quality steel on steel Philip Patek or a well put together steel on leather Maurice Lacroix.

Kenya has infinite talent! Kenya is awash with artists who sing, produce and songwrite. And if you are one of those who can only sermon to mind the “Rusha mikono!” days and class of artists, you have issues with your memory bank… An overdraft perhaps!

Artists such as Suzanna Owiyo (billed as the Tracy Chapman of Africa) who sung at the Nobel Ceremony, Eric Wainaina, Sauti Sol and Annette Kawira are just a small example of artists with such vocal range and depth of music that you should be ashamed of yourselves! And though Miss Kawira has only one song, her vocal range on Nonini’s track “Pole Pole” was impressive. Then there’s the effervescent Miss Karun. Listen to her solo performance of “O Holy Night” before flapping your gobs to chop robbish!

If you continue to hold Your prejudice against our indeginous, homegrown artists, you continue to kill the entertainment industry. Kenya has talent and the mere fact that some are too ignorant to either give credit where it’s due or give it time to develop doesn’t dilute this fact. Stop dulling the accolades and jonzing the industry with ye attitudes.

KENYA HAS TALENTED SINGERS AND RAPPERS!

Uncle Chim Tuna has spoken! Now feel free to spew hate all on my garments!

This Might Just Be the Next Big Thing in Kenyan Ragga

I was drawn to click on this video because it was done by Enos Olik, who has done some brilliant videos over the past year.

From Abbas and Chiwawa’s Abbachiwa Show, Plan B’s Playground and Grace Muna’s Omba, he is definitely one of the best new talents around. And that explains why he is the official music video director for Pro’voke’s 3-D Music.

One thing that caught me off-guard is how good the song also was, especially considering that I don’t listen to ragga (I’ve never understood why a musical genre requires you to change your accent) or gospel.

I have listened to Kevoh Yout, who I actually really like. Just like Samukat, he also happens to be a gospel artiste. I have always found ragga in gospel a weird fusion, thanks to the b**t-clap videos I’ve seen from Jamaica.

The song here is called Hold On Tight. Performed by Samukat, produced by Riz-I and Afro Mwa and Arkangel Records and the video by CJP Films’ Enos Olik. Check it out below.

Video Evidence: The Mbusii Beef Aside, Rapcha is Probably Kenya’s Funniest Stand-up Comedian

Rapcha was in the news this week for hitting out at popular radio presenter, Mbusii of Ghetto radio. Apparently, this was after Mbusii called someone Rapcha considers family, fake. Read about the beef details here.

Some said Mbusii was just a victim of Rapcha’s need for attention. True, Mbusii is popular. But does Rapcha need that kind of attention? The guy can be way more popular just from his comedy. One of the things that a lot of people do not know is that Rapcha is extremely funny.

You might remember him from his days at Vioja Mahakamani and his radio shows at Ghetto and Hot 96. But few have gotten the chance to see him actually trying to be funny in front of an audience.

Below is a bit he did for his first Rapcha Raw & Unkut, which he did three years ago. I happened to be there but only just came across the recording. Check out an amateur video recorded by Dennis Sila at the event below. And yes, that’s him in a suit. Forgive him.

7 Things That Rock About Raving In Nairobi!

Another weekend is upon us and you know what that means! if you don’t, that’s probably because you are an old foggy.

But if you do then you know what Uncle Chim Tuna is about to do… Drum roll please…

And we begin! Think about it, it’s time i celebrated the highlights of Nairobi nightlife. What are some of the things you love about raving in Nairobi’s top spots? Let’s jump right in:

#1. Theme Nights

The Kenyan entertainment scene has matured in leaps and bounds over the past 2 years. Before then, if you went out to a themed night, you would be the only one dressed as per the theme night. But no more! Skyuluxx and Volar are some of the venues that have popularised theme nights. Check out this article on Skyluxx’ “White Tee” party.

#2. Beautiful women

No frontin’! Kenya has some very beautiful women and most are vampires -they only come out after dusk. and these days more and more women are dressing for the night. They are now coming out in dresses and looking spiffy! Gone are the days when women thought it cool or even passable to be spotted in jeans or worse… jeggings *shudder*.

And if your date comes donning jeans, ditch her at the door and get your Charlie Sheen on!

#3. Freebies

These days, clubs are investing more in customer satisfaction ergo they are beginning to give their clientele freebies. This truly is the way to go especially if people have to pay to get to the VIP section. And we know how you Kenyans have an affinity for freebies.

#4. 24hr transportation

There are routes that are serviced by public transportation 24hrs a day meaning that now unlike a few years ago, you can club hop even when you are relying on matatus as your sole means of transportation you can get to the “watu” clubs without any stress.

#5. Food is abundant

There are food vendors everywhere you turn in areas like Westlands, Lang’ata and Nairobi West. Only problem is discerning which will turn you into a toilet squatter and which will stave away the hunger. I have found that while Nairobi West’s eateries have rats that look like puppies, the food will nourish you while the food vendors in Westlands enjoy a twisted game of Russian Roulette with your stomach.

#6. Unlimited Number Of Clubs

Nairobi has a club that caters to each and everyone’s taste and wallet these days. From Molly’s and Monte Carlo to the more exclusive *wink* Changes, to Skyluxx to the more impressive and financially oppressive Brew Bistro and Mercury to the exquisite Champagne Bar.

The clubs even cater to old foggies such as Sailors and Tribeca and Rafikis.

#7. Improved Club Service

And here i’m talking about bouncers. Clubs such as Brew and Volar have friendly staff. The bouncers at these establishments have been properly trained on how best to deal with clientele -even those of Neanderthal tendencies.

Video: Prisoner from Migori rocks the crowd with a cypher

Remember the story we wrote a couple of months back about two prisoners who had decided to turn their lives around through hip hop? Well, one of them is out, jumping up and about in Nairobi, enjoying his freedom.

Little Veen, one of the rappers who made it out of the Migori prison, is currently working on his music, trying his best to make up for lost time.

Through these musical and life building journey that he is taking, he thought it wise to share with you (the fan) some of his performances while he was still in the Migori Prison.

After watching this guy rock the crowd of inmates with his fresh lyrics, I am now assured that there is no limit to achieving whatever it is you desire. Well, he is getting there.

Just watch the video below.

Juliani Will Be the Guest at the Next Mindspeak

Concious rapper, Juliani, will be the next guest at Mindspeak. The increasingly popular event invites the rapper who is currently shooting the video for 4 By 6.

Mindspeak is a monthly forum that was started by markets analyst, Aly Khan Satchu. The next Mindspeak will take place on the 20th of October at The Intercontinental Hotel.

The event invites mostly speakers from the business world, including Bob Collymore and KCB’s Martin Oduor, media personalities, Jeff Koinange and Eric Wainaina and world leaders like Paul Kagame and Yoweri Museveni.

Jeff Koinange meets the Bible’s Noah in this parody. Check it out

Jeff Koinange’s The Bench show must be one of the most interesting interview platform for viewers all around Kenya. Why else would it be the topic of most peoples’ conversation, especially after he has just interviewed someone who is currently making the news for likewise interesting reasons?

That’s not all. Even comedians have noticed this show’s popularity and are out to benefit from it. Some disappoint, and some, well, like this one here (below) just crack you up.

Jeff Koinange himself met face to face with XYZ Show’s Keff Joinange and the conversation was, let’s just say, one of a kind.

Now, in this parody, ‘Keff Koinange’ meets Noah from the Bible. Oh my God! you wanna see this.

Daddy Owen and Nonini Working on a Collabo

When I first heard this news I was like how is that possible? Not because the two artistes can’t sing but rather because they are from two distinct music genres more like “heaven and earth” literally.

Well, today morning genge rapper Nonini revealed that he is in the studio with Papa Fololo “cooking up” some hot track. It will be interesting piece to listen to considering the two artistes have most recently done songs that have taken the country by storm.

It would not be the first time for a secular artiste to work with a Gospel artiste on the same project considering rapper Juliani and Jua Cali have not so long ago worked on a song that stirred a lot of controversy with a section of the public questioning Juliani’s seemingly “wavering faith”.

Anyhow, let’s wait and see how this will play out.

American Group Stages a Music Concert in Honour of a Kenyan Village

On October 14th there will be a concert with music from the Age of Columbus at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Fall River featuring American group Delight Consort who will take the audience back in time.

Donations from the concert will be channeled miles and miles away here in Africa to the Crossroads Spring Institute, a school for AIDS orphans in a Kenyan village where Joan Horbsby, wife of St. Luke’s rector emeritus volunteered 50 years ago.

Crossroads Springs Institute exists as an orphan care center that provides support to children orphaned by HIV/AIDS through networking alliances with other stakeholders in Hamisi, Kenya. It also equips children with skills to enable them to grow into self-reliant and responsible adults.
