Oktoberfest! How The Weekend Was!

Oktoberfest went down over the past weekend and it was sick!

Friday saw a battle of the bands get hosted and the winners were a group called Parking Lot Grass and to be honest, they deserved the win. What was not to like about Friday? They beautiful ladies? The alcohol or the good music and sound system?

Then Saturday rolled in and we all expected the same but mother nature had plans of her own. The rain set in and boy did it rain! It rained and it poured then it rained and poured some more. and the tent came a tumbling and a crashing like the walls of Jericho.

But here is where i was truly impressed: the response time and action were both professional! The guests were evacuated in an orderly fashion and the response between this occurrence and the evacuation protocol being initiated was impressive!

I am truly impressed by how the whole affair was handled and to be honest, though i left shortly there after, i stand to be corrected that the event was organised by professionals. There were no stampedes and no unruliness. Kudos to the team that organised Oktoberfest.

Creative vs. Production: A Revolution in the Christian Music Scene

The Freedom Mixtape is being termed as a revolution in the Kenyan Christian music industry. The project was initiated by Jaaz Odongo a.k.a Thaat Guy who is a producer at SoundMind.

The creative (also talent scout) behind the project is Rigga, a rapper who has come back to doing music after getting his law degree. Rapper Bupe has been doing the artwork for the project material as another rapper, Astar, does the marketing.

The Freedom mixtape has already featured various artistes from Kenya and guest featured Geo from Zambia, Bupe who is a Kenyan-Zambian and Haimie from Ethiopia. You can check out a pop song Kambua did for the mixtape here. Check out this interesting documentary on Creative vs Production below.

Check out Size 8’s Sleek Sportscar

Size 8 is one artiste who has tasted both sides of life. Rising from a humble background where she would walk to school and borrow cash to attend her concerts Size 8 is currently one of the most sought after female artistes in the Country.

Just to complement her status, the Vidonge hit maker has gotten herself a sleek sportcar. Speaking exclusively to Ghafla on phone, Size 8’s younger siz, DJ Size 7, revealed that the car is just 2 hours old and that it cost Size 8 1.2M.

The car, a silver Toyota Celica, is among the top sportscars in the world. So next time you see Size 8 in it don’t be shocked, Ghafla told you.

Fans fail to carry Akon above their heads (video)

Akon delivered one of the best and most electrifying performances that Kenyans have ever seen. To be honest, I didn’t expect the concert on Saturday to be as packed as it was, considering he disappointed fans last time by not showing up for his much anticipated concert. In the long run, I guess he is really just a great artiste, and his fans couldn’t miss the concert despite his no-show for the previous one.

Akon lived up to our expectations and gave his fans the best they could ever ask for. Performing almost, if not all his songs, Akon touched the stage and everybody went wild and crazy! The Carnivore grounds was packed to the max and nobody left the vicinity disappointed.

There’s just one thing though that I just can’t help mentioning. A little hilarious but at the same time, unfortunate. You know how huge (not physically, but in popularity) artistes, at the peak of their performances love to throw themselves out to the crowd and are transported from one end of the stage to the other, on the revellers’ hands? Akon tried this, only he knew too well not to trust these drunk Kenyans, and therefore did not throw himself onto them, but instead leaned forward to the revellers’ hands and slowly let himself go just for a little bit. After realising that the guys at the front could not hold him to save their lives, he backed away and continued with the awesome performance.

Now, dear Kenyans. You only had one job… hold Akon and move him across the field. Let him also enjoy himself. Only that! But no, we just had to drink ourselves silly and almost dropped the poor guy. Kenya’s story!

Check out the video below (the action starts at 0:49).

Epic Battle of the Genres Takes Place This Week

The event is a battle between Rock & Dance music versus Urban Hits. For one ticket, you get to attend two parties in one venue split into two arenas.

The lower level of Secrets will host the Rock & Dance arena mixed by DJ Gordo and the guest DJ, DJ Tumz. The upper floor will host the urban hits arena with music from DJ Kamjo who will play hip hop, RnB and dancehall.

Akon still in Kenya, looking for artistes to sign

This must be the most giving, most selfless and humble international artiste that has performed in Kenya so far. Akon gave a thrilling performance at the Carnivore grounds on Saturday and left fans satisfied to the max.

His music is not all that he had to offer to his fans. Infront of revellers, he introduced a Kenyan boy on stage. A boy that has seen hardship in the hands of his father but has never given up on his musical dreams and aspirations. A boy who felt that his only hope lay with Akon. A boy brave enough to hold the mic, stand his ground infront of thousands of people, and rap for the first time in his life before a large live audience. After this kid’s short and moving performance, Akon gets back on stage and announces that the kid is the latest addition to the Konvict music family. Moving, huh?

That was not the maximum streatch of Akon’s helping hand. He is done with his show but he is still hanging around. “What for?” you ask. Well, apparently Akon is still in the country and is planning to leave around Wednesday next week, right after he has met with some of the Kenyan artistes, possibly collaborate with a few, and definitely sign a little bit more.

Akon’s success story is one to encourage and motivate any youth that has talent in art, and this is just the beginning of a Kenyan artiste’s success story that will be told some few years from now, after he/she has made millions in the U.S. Hopefully.

Left Out of Kisima, Rapper Disses Other Nominated Artistes in New Track

Even before he recovers from his accident, Influxx Swagga is out with a new track. The rapper came out crying foul over missing out on the Kisima Awards. You can read his letter to the committee here.

You’d expect he would hit out at them in the next track, but he has decided to go for people who actually got nominations. From Rabbit to Camp Mulla, he dedicates the first verse of Swagga Boy to some of the biggest artistes in the country. Check out his first lines below.

Sijaona Shakespare Akibonga Kiswahili
Kuna Vile Number Nane Yoh Ukuwa Zero Mbili
Na Wengine Hawana Majina Ndio Bibi Hatishiki
Camp Ya Pesa Bila Pesa? Hey Think Twice
Majina Zingine Ni Za Ex – Still Static

In the first five lines alone, he hits out at Rabbit, Octopizzo, Nameless, Camp Mulla and Xtatic. “I am still Recovering from the Kisima Shock,” he says. He adds that next time the nominations should be done in a free and fair manner by an independent senate though he says that he does not intend to submit anything for any Kenyan music Aawards in the near future because he has a bigger dream. Listen to Swagga Boy below.

Catch Dan Aceda live this week. Here’s how

Being one of the most refreshing artistes in Kenya, doing the most refreshing music genre (Afro/Neo Soul), Dan Aceda will be holding it down this week, live on stage.

There’s just something about watching a really good artiste perform acoustic tracks infront of a live audience, backed up by a band,if need be. It just creates this serene environment around you that puts you at ease and in a very much relaxed state. If you have never been to one, by an actual and really good singer, then this should be the best time to make it a first time.

Known for tracks like ‘Dalili ya mvua’, Dan Aceda will rock the crowd at the weekly live concert event dubbed ‘Thursday Nite Live @ Choices’ that is always held, as stated, at Club Choices, Baricho Road.

This will be yet another Thursday night of real jazz, roots, acoustic live music, that this particular event is known for. As usual, I will not be missing this for the world. The show starts at 8PM till late.

See you there.

Prezzo, Abbas and Bamboo to drop their hot collaborative track this week

They are all legends in their own leagues and much respect accompanies them everywhere they go, especially on shows. If history is anything to go by, these three rappers might have caused more changes in the Kenyan music industry than the rest.

After the creation of their brand, ‘The Three Kings’ which was part of the Pilsner Bold Launch, these three have made it stick and now, it is clear that they are indeed the three kings of Kenyan rap music industry.

The three rappers have all collaborated with each other, two by two, but never all together on the same track, until now. However, they also did a little something on the ‘Toklezea remix’ but this one right here, what they have in store for us, will be epic.

This will be their first official track as ‘The Three Kings’ and I am positive they will cause a stir in kenyan music after this. This will be the next big thing. Details about the track have not been released yet, but all we know is that it will be launched sometime this week. I just can’t wait.

Heard of Kazi Kwa Vijana Pesa Kwa Madame?

Coined from the famous phrase Pesa kwa vijana pesa kwa wazee associated by activists, Calif Records’ newest signings Rapper TN and Saiz 2 have released the video for their Pesa Kwa Madame single.

Shot on location at different areas in Nairobi, the video was produced and directed by Calif Records. Basically, the song is about how guys spend most (if not all) of their hard-earned cash on chics and as if that’s not enough end up getting dumped after all that.

Based in Nakuru, both Saiz 2 and Rapper TN are currently enjoying massive airplay with this club banger on local radio stations in the town. Calif Records’ Mejja also makes a special appearance in the video. Check out the video below;

Top Singer Leaves Band. Goes Solo

The lead singer of one Kenya’s leading bands, Nanjira, has left the Ma3 band and gone solo.

The singer is currently in studio working with top producer, Blackman, on new material to appear in her upcoming EP. The record will feature collaborations with some major local artistes. Nanjira’s different musical direction also comes with a new look, a more retro look.

With Ma3, Nanjira performed at the Sauti Za Busara Festival in Zanzibar and various shows in Kenya.

BEEF ALERT: Abbas Drags Jua Cali & Octopizzo into His Tweef with K-Nel

Yesterday evening rapper Abbas and his friend-turned-foe K-Nel (Nelson Muriuki) rekindled their beef on twitter and boy, did it have below the belt punches! At some point, Abbas even dragged Jua Cali and Octopizzo into the tweef.

“@DjSwayjulu, @KnelKing, @KENYANHIPHOP411, @OCTOPIZZO, @juacaliGenge soundz silly.. just wasting my air-time!…hamuni tishi na hizo ma t-shirt!” tweeted Abbas referring to Octopizzo and Jua Cali’s cloth-line. Abbas having fired the first salvo, Jua Cali and Abbas are expected to “return the favour” sooner than later with K-Nel warning Abbas of the same; #UncleAndrew make sure you get JUA KALI ON TWITTER ASAP!!U f**ed with The wrong dude On a Monday!

Meanwhile, the tweef between Abbas and K-Nel was a classic one with both artistes trying to outdo each other. Take a look at some of the tweets;

@AbbasDoobeez: nelson is a professional snitch who helps cops arrest illegal immigrants in europe 4 deportation!
@KnelKing: #UncleAndrew I will Finish u Off!Did u call my #aljazeera TV Show “snitching?”
@KnelKing: Whoever is watching The News of The day;#UncleAndrew I FED U and that’s how u Show appreciation?!!
@AbbasDoobeez: muriuki..feed whoo? mi nakulanga sana rafiki yangu u cant feed my tapeworms and daily shasha munchiez!
@AbbasDoobeez: and plus more.not just that wan.i tapped ur german gerl too at summer-jam..she got nice b**t dimples!

At one point Chiwawa also come on board to add his voice on the tweef however his tweet seemed to opinionated; @Chiwawa254: @KnelKing ever heard of the phrase “Never spill the Milk”. That Groupie tweet is just sad. Let it be on the $$ matters not anything else

Blankets and Wine Line-Up Announced

As everything comes together for the November edition of Blankets, the line up of performers has been announced.

And Muthoni and her team have ensured that the lineup is holistically an East African affair. And this is just one of the reasons why you should make sure you attend. The performers include Kidum from Burundi, Tanzania’s Mzungu Kichaa and Kenya’s very own Kagwe Mungai.

But the biggest reason why you should come through is not just to support our own but to enjoy the soulful sounds of Dwele. The event is being held on the 4th of November (this Sunday).

BLOWS SWUNG: Abbas rekindles his beef with Octopizzo

Just a few months ago, Abbas and Octopizzo announced that they had buried down the beef they had for the longest time, and that they were now about to start working together as boys! All that has just gone down the drain now.

Abbas, while going through a series of tweefs with K-Nel and his followers, got a little bit too carried away in the moment and widened his blow swinging range. Being the warrior that we all know Abbas is, he wasn’t going to back out of a tweef. If anything, Abbas is the most experienced rapper when it comes to both rapping and beefing with other rappers, and he is really good at both.

Coming on strong, Abbas returned verbal shots at K-Nel and other rappers that in his opinion, are not worth the title ‘rappers’. In the process of tweefing with K-Nel, Abbas pulled in Octopizzo, taking shots at him and his t-shirt line.

This was one of the shots Abbas directed at Octopizzo on twitter last evening,

“@Octopizzo sounds silly.. just wasting my air-time!…hamuni tishi na hizo ma t-shirt!”

Follow the rest of the tweef here @AbbasDoobeez

Could this be the beginning of yet another round of beef between Octopizzo and Abbas? And if so, will it escalate to the heights of Chiwawa and Abbas’ beef? Let’s just wait and see.

You would think this Kenyan artiste is Jamaican. Check out this video

His name is Versatile and yes, he is Kenyan. Forever in love with dancehall music and all that comes with it (Jamaican accent). These are the type of artiste that are always looking into making their fans dance all through the song and just feel good while at it.

Versatile has lately been doing his music in plenty but this by far is one of the best tracks I’ve heard from him thus far. All the energy put both in the video and lyrics make you feel like hitting the clubs immediately you hear it.

The song titled ‘Me luv yuh’, which is patwa for ‘I love you’, is the latest from Versatile and I think it will also go down as the best. This is destined to be a hit. No doubt.

Check out the video below.

DJ Creme Admits That He And Avril Once Had A Thing

So DJ Creme and Proff were on Adelle Onyango’s 1Drive show on One FM, promoting their new song, “Kidogo”

{youtube}VMcUftLcIVw{/youtube}

As usual, Adelle had some tough questions for them about their personal lives. The most interesting one was when Adelle asked DJ Creme about whether he ever was in a relationship with Avril. This is what Creme had to say:

Yes, we had a thing, but it was nothing official. We were really close. Man, memories. Me and Avril were really tight”

Then Adelle asked what happened for it not to work out, and Creme said,

“You know someitmes in life there are things you want, but fate gets in the way. It didn’t take off, but we’re really cool.”

Adelle asked him whether they are still friends, despite everything, and Creme said,

“I respect her.”

Photo Gallery: Tattuu Reunite as Shinde Makes a Comeback

It’s been a while since we last heard of Tattuu, the music group that blazed Kenyan charts in the mid-2000s with such hits as Teso, Napepea and Parapanda.

One of the group’s members has been working on her comeback. Shinde was at the Louis Leakey Auditorium at the National Museum to launch her new album. Backed by Aaron Rimbui, the launch saw Tattuu reunite to perform some of their best hits. Check out Quaint Photography’s images from the event below.

Lovely! This Kenyan gospel track goes all traditional and serene

As most of the gospel music these days comes with a lot of energy, with all the dancing and jumping around in praises, with inspiring movements, this ladies chose to come with a very different and ‘quiet’ approach.

The song is as peaceful and calming as it could get. Soft voices, soul soothing tunes and all that. The song is not all that has captured my attention though. Actually, the video has.

Never have I seen such serenity in a video. Such relaxing and heavenly choreography that is so simple and well put.

Nita Hungu has definitely gone way above outdoing herself in this song, ‘Kilio’.
Kilio, apparently, has been inspired by a phrase from the Bible (Number’s 23:21) which says, “the shout of the King is amongst them…”

This explains the traditional Kenyan warrior apprentice being guided on the art of battle.

Check out the video below. Just lovely!

This might just be the funniest ‘African Gangnam Style’ parody yet

If there is anyone who doesn’t know about Gangnam Style by now, that is a very sad life story right there. This viral video can get you from sad to extremely joyful and jumpy in just five seconds.

Despite its awesomeness, millions of people have still tried to outdo it by creating parodies of their own, trying to lick a little bit of that fame that comes with the ‘gangnam style’ trending tune right now.

When I say everyone, I really mean everyone. Even those that have no clue whatsoever as to what the lyrics mean. The catchy sound is enough to make you think you understand every single lyric in this song.

Still, with all those parodies out there, I honestly don’t think that there is any funnier than this one right here, by these kids. The way they move to the beat, and the expressions on their faces while they are at it is just priceless. Definitely to leave you in stitches.

Check out the video below.

Size 8 Explains Why TPF Refused to Let Her Audition

In an interview with 99 Degrees singer Size 8 spoke about her music and the struggles she has faced including self-esteem issues, which you can read about here.

She also revealed that she actually auditioned for the talent reality contest, Tusker Project Fame. Those who follow the show know that they never saw her on it because she never even made it through the audition. But it wasn’t because of her talent, it was because of the contest’s strict rules.

So, I said, what do I have in my hands? I have a voice that God gave me free of charge. My sister told me, ‘there’s TPF, go try.’ So, I went for TPF auditions, Clemo is the one who did it. So, when I entered the room, Clemo just told me, ‘Linet, you’re not 21 so you can’t audition.’

So I felt like crying, I was like what the…? I’ve woken up at 4:00 to come here, it’s chilly, it’s cold. I was there by 6 o’clock. I was like, now what am I going to do with my life? Then I told him, ‘No, give me even if it’s 10 seconds just listen to my voice.’ He was like, ‘Even if we give you 10 seconds, there’s no way you can go ‘cos you’re not 21.’ I was 20.

I was like, ‘No, I’m going to sing. Just give me even five.’ So I sang and then he told me, ‘Yeah, you have a good voice but you can’t join TPF ‘cos of the rules. What you can do is come to Calif and you can start with your music.’ That’s how I started officially and that’s how I joined the industry.”

Gospel singer joining politics: Man Ingwe running for Senator

It is now not surprising at all to see a successful Kenyan artiste pick up a taste for politics and decide to get in the political race. No longer a wonder. Just the other day, there were stories about Jaguar running for Makadara MP.

So now, a gospel artiste has just made his claim to a governmental seat and it’s just a matter of time before it becomes a big deal and this starts all over again. Comical gospel singer,Man Ingwe, you know, the guy who brought us the hit ‘Ugali sosa’, will be running for senator in Kakamega County.

Having the youth’s best interest in mind, Man Ingwe is planning on aiming straight for artistic projects that would empower the women and youth of Kenya, giving rise to a more energetic and ofcourse better and artistic generation.

Man Ingwe will be running for Senator under ODM, his favorite party and according to him and other reliable sources, he is very prepared to tackle all the corruption and what not that may come his way, on the journey to making Kenya a better place. Okay!

Daddy Owen, Emmy Kosgei in A Collabo with Camp Mullah’s Miss Karun

Most recently, the Kenyan music scene has witnessed a number of gospel artistes working with secular artistes on music projects. Just recently it was revealed that Nonini and Daddy Owen were working on a collabo. It seems Daddy Owen is not anywhere near being done because a few hours ago, the King of Kapungala, revealed that he is currently in studio recording with Camp Mullah’s Miss Karun and four time Groove Award nominee, Emmy Kosgei.

The three are working with the well-known producer and musician Robert “RKAY” Kamanzi. All the three artistes have so far been successful in their music careers and that prowess is expected to be demonstrated in this new track that they are working on.

Meanwhile, Wyre the Love Child will also be doing a collabo with Denno (of the Mbona hit with Daddy Owen) at the same studio. Let’s wait and see what these geniuses will come out with.

Photo Gallery: Sorry For The Delay Album Launch

Those who were at the Just-A-Band launch party (check out the details here) at the KICC for Sorry For The Delay know how much fun it was. There is no way to relive the experience but maybe you can get a glimpse of what happened through a pictorial presentation.

Through Quaint Photography’s photos, you can get to see how the night that featured performances by the band with the help of Lisa Oduor Noah and Sara Mitaru went. Check them out below.

The MusikMaestro finally reveal the Disco Girl. Check her out

They are the type of music groups that have been around and about and have pretty much done what most artistes dream of doing… travelling on the job. Most artistes who have travelled a lot could tell you that some really great inspirations are derived from places very much far from home.

Away from all that, MusikMaestro, after spending too much time in the UK, I am suprised to find that these guys still have that African, actually Kenyan taste to their songs. They have just released their latest video for their track, ‘Disco Girl’ which has been on its way for quite sometime. Good thing it’s all worth it though.

From the music, down to the choreography of the video, especially the lighting of the set, everything is just really cool. As part of their new and coming EP dubbed Electric Afreeca which will be released later this year, it has their experimental fusion sound that will probably be their signature sound.

Take a look at the ‘Disco Girl’ video below and tell us what you think about it.

Esther Passaris’ Daughter Performs At Akon Concert

Barely one week after she officially launched her music career in the country, Makenna, Esther Passaris’ daughter, already has performed at a renowned international act’s concert. It all started when she met Akon on Saturday and the artiste asked her to perform at his family show the next day (Sunday) upon which she gladly agreed.

On Sunday the 16 year old could not wait to perform (though nervous in the first place) and invited everyone to attend. “This week has been nothing but spectacular, and I thank each and everyone of my family, friends and fans for all the support and words of encouragement. My biggest highlight was meeting one of my favortie artist, Akon, yesterday.I also met Akon’s Tour Manager (a really nice gentleman ) who understood my desire to work with and be signed by Konvict Musik. He suggested I perform three songs at the Akon Family Concert today at 3pm, at the Carnivore Grounds. If you can, please come and watch as I make my stage debut. Wish me luck. Cheers!”

This was Makena’s  first time to step on the stage to perform and she could not hide it. “About to go on stage for my first live performance at the Akon family concert. The crowd looks anxious with anticipation. I hope I survive this and learn from the experience 🙂 Wish me luck! Cheers.”

Meanwhile, her mum, Esther Passaris, was giving out free Akon tickets to random people on Makenna’s page on Facebook to attend her daughter’s performance.

MIND BLOWING: Kenyan Grandmother Doing A Freestyle Rap In The Village

This is nuts.

Over the weekend I was browsing music videos on YouTube, when I began to endlessly click around the related items(you know how YouTube can be addictive). Anyway, I was browsing around, when I stumbled on a video that was titled: “Nyanya atupa mistari.” I skeptically opened it, thinking it was one of those videos on YouTube with a misleading title, but lo and behold, I saw this:

{youtube}vO3Ob63bG-8{/youtube}

MIND=BLOWN

I’m pretty sure you ain’t seen nothing like this before. Citizen TV had filmed a group of Kenyan villagers who were standing around a grandmother in true ‘cypher’ fashion. They cheer her on as she spits some LEGIT rhymes, such as:

Ni wabaya wasio na haya, wanaojifanya hepa kuonekana mbaya

mashabiki mnawapoa,

kwenye plasma ikatoa,

kwenye safi mwaeka doa,

nini mnakingojea?

Si nawaambia ukweli?

hakuna sababu wa siri

mbanumbanu ya nini tusianze mikononi turudishane jikoni

kama Cheka ntatoka, ntatoka na style yangu

Temba anatoka, anatoka kwa style yake

urembo haina ukumu

wala haina majumu

nini kipaji changu? Kipaji kanipa Mungu.

And the crowd goes wild after she finishes her freestyle, which clearly appears to be made up from the top of her head, as she refers to two people in the crowd, Cheka and Temba and points out their characteristics.

For further proof, she busts yet another freestyle after a short break, but you have to watch the video yourself for that one. Seeing is believing 🙂

As the presenter of the feature said, “ni msanii wa miondoko wa kufokafoka.”

NOTE: Despite the awesomeness of this video, it only has 92views so far. If you liked what you saw, please share the article with your friends on social media so that we can showcase to the world this woman’s unique talent.

Goldie: Me and Prezzo will probably never happen!

It all goes down just like that. All those hopeless romantics that were ironically so hopeful that these two will eventually tie the knot and become Africa’s best celebrity couple, something like Jay Z and Beyonce, it ain’t gonna happen.

I wish there was a better way to break the news to you guys, though I don’t understand how this news could be devastating to anyone who is not Prezzo nor Goldie. It will just never work, and it didn’t even work in the place, according to Goldie.

Apparently, these two are just friends and all those places they’ve visited together, well, it was just that, tourism and all. Just as friends.

Goldie made it clear to a Nigerian media house that she and Prezzo’s relationships just like that of her’s and any other ex BBA housemate. Nothing more.

“I am not dating Prezzo. The state of things between us is the same state of things between me and anyone in Big Brother. We are all friends. I didn’t go to Kenya to see him. I went there for an event. People are just assuming there’s something going on between us because we are not speaking. Well, everybody is just working for the soap opera that will never come,” Goldie told sources.

History doesn’t necessarily define the present, so, I get where she’s coming from. But then again, what about all those clear signs that we picked up along the way suggesting that they were an item? Why wait till now to come out and say all these? Forget all that. They had a good run though. Still, I can’t help but think… someone’s heart must have been broken really bad for it to come to this. Either that, or the two just want to have a private relationship, without media houses like us being on their necks. Understandable!

Nigeria’s Denrele unleashes the crazies in the Homeboyz studios (video)

This is by far the most ridiculous (in the most positive of ways), vibrant, crazy, and very interesting celebrity personality I have ever seen. He is Denrele from Nigeria, Goldie’s best friend, or the Channel O VJ with the loudest shoes.

He knows how to make statements with his wardrobe and character, and makes it loud. If you happen to be in the same event with this very much entertaining guy, trust me, you won’t miss him.

Channel O VJ Denrele Edun was in Kenya for sometime (actually, he has been here quite a number of times and he loves it here), and during this time, he paid a visit to the Homeboyz Radio studios. I don’t know what got into them but they decided to shoot a video of him describing himself and telling us all about what we do and didn’t know about him. Really interesting too.

All I can say from this video is, I am glad he is a VJ. Infact, I have never seen anybody more suitable to be a VJ or an MC like this guy. He might just be the life of any party.

This Might Just Be the Future of Albums in Kenya

One of the most interesting things that came out of Just-A-Band’s album launch last weekend is the revolutionary new albums. “This is the new album,” said Blinky Bill as he held up an ATM-style and sized card. “Believe it or not.”

Sorry For The Delay didn’t come in the traditional glass or cardboard casing hiding a disk and booklet. The album was sold as a card with the artwork on the front and a unique code at the back, which is keyed into the Just-A-Band site to download the full album, artwork and credits.

The service, fairly new in the country, is powered by an international company, DropCards. It has previously been used by musicians Lady GaGa, Ozzy Osbourne and Metallica, and even corporates like Disney, Universal and MTV among others.

Just-A-Band have proved to be innovative over how they have marketed their albums and they might have just started what might be the next form of distribution.

Nonini Involved In Twitter Beef With A DJ!

Nonini is currently getting into it with a DJ called Xclusive DJ and the chap is going H.A.M!

The argument which seems to stem from a difference of opinions on whether or not a DJ should play music from our artists even if they didn’t personally get it from the artists. The argument is centred on whether it’s ethical for DJs to rip music off YouTube and play it or they should pay for the content. MCSK feels that they should pay and so does Nonini. DJ Xclusive however is of a different school of thought.

Here are some excerpts from the tweef:

so uniongeleshe Chafu na since Mimi ni Msanii I take it na ninyamaze Cdio?”

This is by no means a tweef ni watu kupeana maoni yao!”

I don’t need u my friend as a matter if fact Fanya hivi! Wewe delete ngoma zangu Sawa?”

Wyre collaborates with one of India’s finest artistes (studio video)

I’ve always been positive that when a great artiste is quiet for a while, with no music coming from them for some time, they must be working on something that will blow the fans’ minds. Most of the time, this proves to be true, while in some instances, they are just washed up.

Fortunately, Wyre takes the first option. He has definitely been working on mind blowing stuff. Out of his comfort zone he has stepped and into unknown musical territory. It takes balls and undeniable musical talent to do something of this sort.

For the first time (I think), a dancehall artiste has collaborated with an Indian singer. When I got wind of this, at first, I thought it was a horrible joke and when I realised that the guy telling me this was not laughing at all, I decided to give it a listen and alas! Against all odds, this song will triumph.

This Indian artiste, Aadesh Shrivastava is really good. I know, because in this video teaser, which was shot while they were recording the song, you get to hear him sing acapella. Looks like it will be a catchy tune too.

Is there a limit to Wyre’s diversity? I think not. I can’t help but wonder though, will the video be like one of those romantic Indian music videos where they run and jump up and down a field of roses, and the rain suddenly falls, tears are shed, then the sun jumps right back up… I don’t know, could it be? I sure hope so. Those videos have a way of cheering you up. I don’t know how they do it, but they just do.

Beef: Q-Tasi Comes Out To Defend Kisima. Takes Shots At Those Who’ve Pulled Out.

Did you read the short piece carried in yesterday’s Buzz that had Q-tasi calling out all the artists who’ve dropped out of Kisima?

Well, in a nutshell Q-Tasi said that he felt honoured to have been nominated by the prestigious award. He said that the fact that the awards are being handled by a select committee was a mark of progress because according to him both B.E.T and the Grammys are handled.

Then he said that most of the people who have pulled out are non-entities in the game (see has-beens0 and they were afraid of being exposed as such. They just want to win and have forgetten that for there to be a winner, there must be a loser.

BAMBOO.jpg

Shots fired! The same piece carried a side note about Bamboo also coming out to mention that he doesn’t agree with the dubious nature the awards are being handled. Coincidence? you decide. But i feel that for artists to experience true growth they must have solidarity. This business of attacking each other doesn’t help them.

Just-A-Band Unveil New Album at KICC

Just-A-Band finally released their highly anticipated album, Sorry For The Delay at the KICC courtyard on a chilly drizzly Saturday evening.

The night started off with a DJ set between 6:00 and 8:00 p.m. before the band appeared and apologized “for the delay.” In costumes, they begun performing what would become an epic night as the band took us through their new and old material.

They gave the fans just what they wanted. From Scratch To Reveal’s Hey and Oh Ndio, 82’s Huff+Puff and Usinibore to newer tracks like the highly acclaimed Probably For Lovers.

They also played newer tracks from the album like the addictive Life Of The Party, club-banger, Get Down and the nostalgic Dunia Ina Mambo and Matatizo. They were joined on stage by Lisa Oduor Noah for Life Of The Party, Away, Matatizo and Sara Mitaru for Probably For Lovers. Get Down and Probably For Lovers had to be played a couple of times to satisfy the fans.

Through the rain, fans stayed on for a set by DJ Sugarcube that featured Kenyan music pulled out from what seemed like a time capsule: from Nameless and E-Sir’s Maisha, Kleptomanix’s Furahia, King Georges’ Unanijazz and Gidi Gidi & Maji Maji’s Unbwoggable.

Sorry For The Delay is available for Kshs. 500 with an album art poster. Check out the photos here.
