This Famous Artist Got Paid 500 Bob For His First Gig. Here Is His Music Story

You probably have seen him during the many Tusker Project Fame cycles we’ve had on TV. He is known as Aaron ‘Krucial Keys’ Rimbui one of Kenya’s leading jazz maestros. He doubles up as a pianist, keyboardist, drummer, performing artist and music producer. Here is his music story, according to him

 – The 1st music test I took in Standard 4, I got 2/30

– So despite the 2/30 music score in class 4 I went on get I think 84% in KCPE. From then on it was smooth sailing!

– I actually started out as a drummer. I switched to piano at age 17: 3rd form in Nairobi School

– I switched to piano coz after a near fatal fire accident I thought it was the only way and best way to express my experience.

– Nairobi School was the best place to learn! Learnt from great piano players like Zack Amunga.

– As regards the piano,I’ve never heard any formal training! I’ve spent 16yrs figuring it out! Still learning and growing.

– so after Nairobi School did IB in saints. that’s where I decided it’s music I wanna do for the rest of my life!

– Took part in all the musicals in saints Sarafina, jubilee anniversary…Unfortunately music was not offered as a subject

– left IB ’99 got an internship then work at ‘s johari cleff… Feb 2000. Walalalala I was green!

– forgot to mention that my 1st paying gig was in 1998: a wedding. I was paid 500/-.

– at Bruce Odhiambo’s studio I learnt music production. Used to churn out jingles like woah!

– one day Bruce asked me to do a track for a little pretty girl who had a concert. Times do change: she is now Miss Karun

– this chap Dennis Ndavi used to be one the guys we churned commercials with at Johari Cleff!

– How much do you think interns earn? Bus fare! Anyhoo took a break went on a tour to the states for a year!

– while in the states apart from doing 4 concerts a day including the fact that you do set up, I got admitted to a good college

– Was admitted to the prestigious Musicians Institute. This man Kanjii Mbugua was the hookup! BUT: couldn’t go coz of $$$!

– the school wasn’t offering scholarships at that time. Yani that was one of my lowest points! Was gonna quit!

– in fact I decided to check up on International Relations at USIU!! Walalalala ..Went back to Johari Cleff! Humility 101!

– good thing is despite the humble pie…wah.. Bruce took me back. At least this time not as an intern!

– 2003 I worked with to put up Sarafina! Btw did you know Mike Oyier was in the brass section?!!! He plays trumpet!

– 2003 myself and  and put up a band called 4winds! It’s also the year I started working with !

– met while in saints!was awestruck! 4years later I couldn’t believe he asked me be in his band!I pinched myself!

– musicians institute sent me an admission letter again! Sema wounds :-(….well atleast Lwanda man of stone was coming!

– started rehearsing for Lwanda with that’s where I met . There are few who can sing like her! Period!

– I was now full time as an MD with . Put up Lwanda Man of Stone did toy know was Lwanda?!

– now 2004 was hard. Not too much $$$ was coming in! Sema MAWIRES!! Wah I was broke! Anyhoo later that year came!

– I needed extra $$ so after coming back from a tour in the states asked me to join him in putting up Kijiji Ent.

– I was 4winds, playing with starting up Kijiji with . The money started tricking in….2005.

also wanted to form his own band. T was a result! Imagine they were his band!

– Kijiji was good: I’d missed producing records. was the 1st artist I worked with on tune called ‘waache waseme’

– forgot to mention in’04 I worked on the record for the coke pop stars with RKay &. But I was bila $$! Lol!

– at kijiji I met . This chap is always intense!

– lesson: You are only one person! I was working with Eric, Kanjii, kavutha, producing, performing. YOU WILL BURN! For real!

– so I had to make a choice. Stopped everything and decided to build on my career as a performing recording artist.

– that meant stepping down from 4winds and leaving Eric’s band. They were difficult decisions but I had to do it.

– lesson: be open to people speaking into your life. They may see things you are yet to discover in yourself. Let me explain…

– The idea to do my 1st record came from . I didn’t know I had it in me. Out of that simple convo….WOW!

– did my 1st record ‘Keys of life’ in 3weeks!!don’t know how I did it coz ‘Alfajiri’ my 2nd, took 2years!…

– the launch concert for Keys of Life at alliance, drama! Show’s starting at 8pm set up starting at 6pm! FIRE!

– this man can tell you the stress! Have you ever been nervous till you feel light headed&everything is slowmo?

– when I was introduced to the stage…I thought the world ended! Lol! Wah nervousness! Anyhoo God LITERALLY came thru!

– next couple years was doing show and getting my music out there. Gigging is a different science all together built on FAITH!

– June 2008 I did a show in the Urban Legends series where after a serious Facebook campaign, adverts.. 20 guys came! FIRE!!!

– have you ever put everything into a concert….only few guys come? Sema DEBTS!!!’

– fast forward to now, out of 8 shows 5have sold out! Good people don’t loose hope! !

– over the years there’re times I’ve almost quit! If I did wouldn’t have shared the stage with Dwele,Hugh Masekela, BlackMambazo

Fans demand for the ‘Faiba Wakamba characters’ to be turned into a comedy series

This was bound to happen sooner or later. There is no way you can be this good and yet offer so little.

Ever since the Faiba advertisements were released to the public view, they have received abundant love from all over the country. Even our fellow Kenyans in the Diaspora are going crazy over these Faiba adverts.

Some have even taken to facebook hoping to convince or persuade the Creatives behind it to turn this hilarious characters into a real comedy series, claiming that they are too rich in character to just be featured in advertisements. I agree.

Here is the facebook page behind all this. Meanwhile, enjoy this Faiba advertisement below.

“There Is No God” Part 2: A Poem By Radio Host Adelle Onyango

The day before yesterday, I told you of how radio presenter Adelle Onyango had written a poem entitled “There Is No God.” Here is the follow up to that poem, aptly named “There is no God part 2.”

THERE IS NO GOD PART 2

Draped in a black cloak

With an oversized hood that greeted my forehead continuously.

A brown sisal rope exposed my waist and held the cloak in place.

It had pleats that ran continuously from my breasts to my toes.

My heels were a canvas

On which a collage of cracks placed themselves.

They had greeted many grounds

They had lost all feeling to a rough past,

So much so, I shuffled across the gravel with ease.

The sun disappeared as ten pillars stood ahead of me

Holding up a canopy of laws and lies.

Fear was killed by curiosity and I continued to walk.

Suddenly,

The scent of deception assaulted my senses.

My eyes bled bright red tears of truth.

And then I heard the whispers creeping out from two large gold doors before me.

They walked up to my ears and spoke a frustrated language.

They said there was wrong,

There was right

There were consequences

There was light

There was pain

And in this confusing dance, there were people.

But no one to blame.

There is no God,

They made him that day.

Size 8 Admits That Some Of Her Recent Performances Were Poor

Yesterday Size 8 was on One FM’s 1Active with Tina Kaggia for an interview. They talked about her growth as an artist and how far she has come since she began this showbiz thing. Fun stuff.

In the middle of the interview, in line with the growth theme, Size 8 was brave enough to talk about how she used to annoyingly shout during her performances this year. She told Tina of how she looked back on her earlier Niko na Safaricom Live performances, especially the one from Meru, and she was ashamed of how forceful and annoying her cries of ‘Wapi nduru’ were. At this point, I got to say, I did watch the Meru performance, and I got to admit that her shouting was a bit too much.

Anyway, Size 8 said that singing coach Kavutha(of TPF Fame) suggested to her that she needed to be more lady-like when trying to get the crowd energised. Together they practiced how she could improve in this area, and now, Size 8 says that she has eliminated the annoying ‘Wapi nduru’ shouts from her act.

Classic 105’s Ciku Muiruri Discovers Cure for Acne

Realizing how acne is a big deal especially among the youth, Classic 105’s Ciku Muiruri has come up with a solution for acne riddled teens. In her weekly column, Ciku narrates how she met a boy with acne and prescribed to him a “cure” for the same. Take a look;

I have just run into a boy with an awful case of acne. Did you go through this when you were a teen? Did you have inflamed sebaceous glands all over the skin that looked like tiny volcanoes about to erupt at any moment? Eww. It’s quite horrible to be a teen. If you’re a girl, you deal with even more crap than the boys do. Do girls still wear sweaters in the blistering heat because they are uncomfortable with their emerging chest? Back to this boy, suffering from the ultimate tool the gods have for ruining a teenager’s social life (These must be the pagan gods that answered parent’s prayers of making their kid unattractive to the opposite sex until they are old enough to be in a relationship!).

First of all, stop trying to burst the little buggers. I know, it’s almost irresistible, the urge to squash them into oblivion but you are just making a bad situation worse. All you’ll have to show for your trouble, if you go down this route, are infections and long-term unsightly facial scars. Secondly, do not use wash your face with soap and water. You will need something that will help remove the oils without drying the skin. Try (and I’m not kidding) Johnson’s baby shampoo.

When I first heard that baby shampoo was the cure to all facial woes, I smirked. It was some time back when I was looking like an anaconda, remember? I went to a dermatologist and got some creams that cleared everything right up and then I had signs of a re-emergence a few weeks later. By this time, I was confident that the creams would work, since I had used them before but I hate relying on medication for anything! So I decided to give the shampoo a try. I figured that if it can’t hurt the babies, it couldn’t hurt me, right? A couple of days later, my skin was radiant. Disclaimer: I did not use it on its own; I ditched my usual moisturizer and used Aloe Vera (use the purest form you can find). A couple of days later, I was fine. I have since returned to my normal face routine and have had no re emergence of the skin problem since then.

So here I am, face to face with this young man and I had to say something. “I know something that would clear your face up in an instant!” I said brightly thinking that he’d be pleased. I got the opposite reaction with the young man shifting uncomfortably and looking quite embarrassed that some lady wanted to give him tips about the pimples on his face. When he tried to speak, the words came out in a different range of pitches and he mumbled something about having tried everything and then quickly clammed up. Oh great, he has to deal with his voice breaking on top of the pus filled lesions on his face. Poor fellow. “This will definitely work, you’ll thank me one day,” I said as I wrote down my wonder cure and passed the paper over to him. He barely said thank you before he scampered off for safety.

I forgot to write down my phone number for him to find out if his face has leveled out, so if you’re reading this and have the same problem, try it and let me know if Johnsons should change their marketing campaign to include teenagers as well. Does it work? Drop me an email ciku@classic105.com

School principal wages war against Eric Omondi

Eric Omondi couldn’t believe it when he was kicked out of a girls’ high school recently by the Principal as reported by Pulse Magazine.

Apparently, Eric Omondi had been scheduled to perform at the school and was more than excited, as were the students for the performance. Upon arrival, the principal turned them back and kicked them out of the compound.

Eric Omondi took much offence from the principle’s actions and was disgusted even more by the reason for the cancellation of the show. The principle deeply believes that comedians have not been through universities and that Eric Omondi would just be eroding the students’ minds with his performance, hence the turn-down.

Funny thing is, Eric Omondi claims that he has actually been through university and that this was just an immature act from the principle.

What do you think about this incident?

Maina Kageni’s Myths about Girls

Classic 105’s Maina Kageni has always been vocal when it comes to relationship issues. And if you’re an ardent fan of his morning show you’ll agree that he’s bombarded by numerous relationship-related matters on a daily basis.

This week however was special as the radio king took time to post some myths (or are they facts?) about girls/ relationships on his Facebook timeline. So here we go;

Myth #1: Perhaps this is true: A REAL relationship must have simple fights, trust, faith, tears, and genuine laughter. Jealous, Communication, patience, weird/stupid unnecessary arguments; no hiding secrets, true love and most importantly there must be forgiveness on both sides.

Myth #2: So apparently, women can tell a cheat by just ‘looking at them’ …really? Can anyone attest to this??

Myth #3: Girls are attracted to jerks because in primary school they were told “If he’s mean to you, he likes you…”

Myth #4: Girls become instant best friends when they find out they hate the same people.

What are your thoughts guys? Do you agree with Maina?

So the Chris Brown concert which people were expecting next week on the 14th of December has been postponed. Spartan group, the concert promoters who were in charge of organising the show, have sent us a press release saying that because of Chris’s tight December schedule, they have been forced to move the concert to early next year.

A check of Breezy’s tour schedule confirms that he indeed has tours lined up in South Africa and Uganda really soon, so the explanation from Spartan Group adds up. The new date for the concert has not been confirmed, but you can be sure we will follow this story up.

So over to you guys. Do you believe this Chris Brown concert will go down soon, or will it be the sort of long, drawn out affair we saw with the Akon show? Leave your interesting or creative responses in the comment section below:

Kings Of Facebook Dish Out Pads And Panties To Underpriviledged Girls(PHOTOS)

The two winners of Safaricom’s “King of Facebook” competition John ‘O.J’ Oballa and Stephen Musyoka recently came up with a charity named “A Million Reasons For Kenya’s Girls to stay In School.” Together with some of their closest friends, they set out to help the hundreds of school girls from less privileged homes who miss classes every time they have a menstrual cycle. They can’t afford sanitary pads. The mission for the Kings of Facebook was to help less privileged girls in Kenya stay in school by providing them with sanitary towels and panties and making sure they don’t miss classes.

So last week they visited Baharini Primary School in Mtwapa coast and gave them panties and pads.
In typical style, they used Facebook to collect the panties and pads from friends. Here is a photo gallery of the event itself:

For All Those Who Rave On Thursdays, Here Is Where It’s Going Down Tonight

A few weeks back, a new club was launched in town named the Lavish Lounge. I was there to cover the grand event. Today marks the beginning of Lavish Thursdays at the Lavish Lounge, Moi Avenue(formerly known as Club Heartz). Tonight DJ Philz and DJ Genius will be throwing it down turn-by-turn at the decks.

According to DJ Philz, “the boss said we’re lavish, and the club is lavish, so when you get the whole combination, it’s just a lavish night. Anything goes. The CBD is embracing what has been happening out there in Westlands.”

On what’s going to make this night special and unique, the DJs said that for one, it’s a Thursday that’s going to be HYPED like a Saturday. The dual mix of DJs willl also add a special spice to the event, as well as the fact that they claim they’ve never disappointed as DJs, so brace yourselves for the main event!

PS: The beer prices for Lavish Lounge have been attached to the photo above, so click it to find out the charges.
