‘Something Necessary’ is an intimate moment in the life on Anna, a woman struggling to rebuild her life after the civil unrest that swept Kenya after the 2007 elections claiming the life of her husband, the health of her son and leaving her home on an isolated farm in the Kenyan countryside in ruins. Once a nurse, with a solid career and loving family, she now has nothing but her resolve to rebuild her life left.

Joseph, a troubled young gang member who participated in the countrywide violence is drawn to Anne and her farm seemingly in search of redemption. Both, Joseph and Anne need something that only the other can give to allow them to shed the painful memories of their past and move on – but will either of them find it?

How Nairobi Half Life Missed Out on the Oscars

Many people have been asking how Nairobi Half Life did at the Academy Awards after the nominations were announced yesterday. Well, the film did not make the nominations but we didn’t have to wait till yesterday to confirm.

Two weeks ago, the Academy whittled down the films from the submitted 71 films to a shortlist of nine. Nairobi Half Life did not appear in the shortlist so it was obvious even before yesterday that it would not make it to the biggest film awards showcase in the world.

All the submitted films were screened for hundreds of LA-based Academy members from mid-October to mid-December. Their top six choices were selected and three more were added by a Foreign Language Film Award Executive Committee.

At this point, NHL was already out but the remaining nine films were screened for specially invited committess in LA and New York between January 4th and 6th.

No films from Africa or Asia advanced. The films that made the shortlist but were not announced yesterday in the final nomination include:

The Intouchables (France)
The Deep (Iceland)
Beyond The Hills (Romania)
Sister (Switzerland)

Maybe Kenya will have better luck next year with Something Necessary coming out this year. It is almost guaranteed to be the country’s official submission for the next awards. Check out the trailer here. And this year’s nominees for Best Foreign Language film are:

Amour (Austria)
Kon-Tiki (Norway)
No (Chile)
A Royal Affair (Denmark)
War Witch (Canada)

X FM’s Presenter Fareed Khimani is A Dad

After a long speculation by friends and fans about when his newborn son would be arriving, X FM’s breakfast show host, Rude Awakening, is now a dad. Fareed first brought the baby news into the limelight on 30 last month when he tweeted that he was waiting for his son to arrive into the world any day.

However, it’s now evident that the baby has arrived because yesterday former Capital FM presenter Gaetano Kagwa was the first to congratulate Fareed.

Ghafla! congratulates Fareed and his wife on their newborn baby and wishes him a healthy life.

The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon (NBC). What mattered when Jimmy Fallon took over from Jay Leno (and The Tonight Show returned to Manhattan after four decades) was this: Fallon just kept doing what he’d done so successfully as host of NBC’s Late Night just bigger and better on this grander stage. He remained funny, gracious, bubbly and much assured.

New Music Alert: Hot Track Released As a Tribute to Nairobi

That Nairobi hustle that just won’t quit, and just won’t stop. Golden Boy Odongo (GBO) is back once again with his third single in just as many months. His growth and tenacity is clearly evident on his latest offering. This time it’s an ode to his birth place – Nairobi.

On My City, featuring Miagi’s first lady (the multi-talented and Ghafla ranked 4th most underated artist of 2012) Dora, GBO effortlessly flexes his lyrical prowess over three well executed verses. Miagi man K-Yos, is once again the beat provider accompanied by his signature heavy drum patterns.

Expect the usual technicality from GBO on this one; metaphors, punch-lines, speed and alternative flows that will have the slow ones amongst you reaching for the rewind button. The video is set to be out in the next few weeks, but for now you can check the track below.

Nazizi and Jamaica’s Ginjah album is complete and about to drop

Remember when Jamaican superstar, Ginjah payed this beautiful country a visit and even performed at the Show Grounds? Well, during that brief time that he spent here, Nazizi managed to record an entire album with him.

How did they do it? Is what you are probably asking yourself right now. Well, I won’t lie to you. I got no idea. All I know is that they put in really hard and awesome work in a very short time and all the songs,. according to our sources close to Nazizi, are unbelievably hot and catchy tunes.

Nazizi really impressed us with this impromptu album recording with Ginjah but later went quiet about it. We had even begun thinking all these had flopped.

Looks like things are good and on track after all. The album is now complete and ready for print.

This is what Nazizi had to say about the album, “You can’t even imagine how hot GINJAH and I album sounds .It’s complete and ready for print and I’m so excited.”

So are we, Nazizi. So are we!

How Is Robert Alai Of The “Rape Kileleshwa Residents” Fame Not Being Investigated By NSIS For Hate Speech?

He has to be the most controversial tweep on twitter if not the most disturbed blogger around!

When he isn’t claiming that the former government spokesman Alfred Mutua wants to have him murdered, he is claiming that Mudavadi’s son is gay! When he isn’t doing that, he is advocating for the rape and murder of Kileleshwa residents and when these lofty pursuits aren’t preoccupying him, he is attending to another hobby: getting beaten by iHub guards.

We gave you the story about which bloggers are being investigated for hate speech aye? Who’s name was missing? And conspicuously so! Alai, that’s who! This is the chap that called for the rape and murder of more Kileleshwa residents! If that isn’t hate speech, i don’t know what is! How do you encourage your online following (and his is rather large) to rape women who live in Kileleshwa simply because she lives in a specific part of town considered leafy suburbs. Not only is that discriminatory, it is vile and criminal!

Rape is one of the few crimes i personally consider worse than death! I’d rather die than watch my women get physically and sexually assaulted! Yet he advocated for it! Indeed, he had a noble point he was trying to get across but when a gourmet meal is served with even a drop of potent poison, it becomes inedible. Self-same way his message became polluted.
And with that, the million dollar question: “How in heaven’s sweet name is Alai not being investigated for hate speech?”

CHART: How Much Money Should Local Musician Make?

This article first appeared on PesaTalk, our sister site.

Music is an art form that has been part of this society for thousands of years. Some people may argue that it is not a physical commodity but many still insist that it has both merit and appeal. The fact that most people appreciate music is evidence of its value. But exactly how much is music worth? How much money should artists make for their contribution to this timeless culture?

Well, the highest paid musician in Kenya goes by the stage name, Jaguar and makes about KES 300,000 per appearance. He has contracts with East Africa Breweries, Unilever and Safaricom. For a half-year contract deal, he can earn up to KES 18 million. This would mean that Jaguar’s contracts alone can get him up to KES 3 million a month for six consecutive months.

Other artists like Daddy Owen rake in KES 250,000 per appearance. Jua Kali, one of the country’s most famous Genge musicians had a KES 1 million endorsement deal with Motorolla. According to Wasanii, he also signed a KES 10 million deal with Telkom Orange as part of their 2009 Hello Tunes Campaign.

Local gospel group, MOG, along with other artists like Juliani, Allan Aaron and Eko Dydda got an offer for a KES 2 to KES 4 million contract with Safarticom in 2010.

Aside from performances and endorsement deals, local artists also have platforms like Mdundo with which to increase their profit margins. The mobile phone music provider gives them free scratch cards which they can use to sell their music. In such cases, the artist is free to keep 100% of the profit from the cards. On the other hand, corporate music selling deals made through Mdundo only gives them 30% of the sales. Exclusive deals with Mdundo can earn the artist up to 50% of sales.

Local Musicians versus United States Artistes

According to a Music Salary Guide from the Berklee College of Music, Vocal Artists should not earn anything less than KES 13,000 per gig. However, this applies to musicians living within the United States. For a local artist, the cost of living should be accounted for in order to make a slightly more accurate assessment.

Nairobi is currently ranked as the 424th most expensive city in the world, out of a total of 780. Several living expense calculators have even described Nairobi as average when considering the cost of living in other parts of the world. Meanwhile, Mercer’s 2012 Cost of Living Guide lists Tokyo, Japan as the most expensive city in the world where a single cup of coffee goes for KES 714.

Since the Musicians’ Salary Guide was done by a United States University, the cost of living should be compared accordingly. Keep in mind that the US has 52 states and the cost of living varies depending on each particular region.

Nonetheless, such comparisons are done according to major cities so the cost of living in the US capital can be weighed against that of Kenya’s very own capital city.

In which case, the cost of living in Washington DC is about 79% more expensive than Nairobi (based on a Cost of Living Index from Expatistan). However, New York is the arts and cultural capital of the United States. Using the same Index, it is 105% more expensive to live in New York than in Nairobi.

This means that a vocal musician in Kenya should earn nothing short of KES 6300 per gig.

The study notes that Songwriters and Lyricists should make no less than USD 250 (KES 21,500) for Independent Films, nothing below USD 7500 (KES 645,800) for a feature film by a major studio and no less than USD 4000 (344,400) for a Promotional Theatrical Trailer.

If the same artists were living in Kenya, they would be entitled to no less than KES 10,500 for independent films. Those working on feature films would get nothing below KES 315,000 while the ones performing for a major studio would receive no less than KES 168,000.

Meanwhile, Film Score Composers (in New York) should make between USD 2500 (KES 215,300) and USD 500,000 (KES 43.1 million) for independent (Indie) films and between USD 35,000 (KES 3.01 million) and USD 2 million (KES 172.2 million) for a Studio Feature. The same kind of composer should make KES 84 million for a Studio Feature made locally.

It is rumoured that world-renowned German composer, Hans Zimmer made a fortune from Director, Christopher Nolan’s Batman franchise. While the actual amount remains a mystery, Zimmer’s net worth currently stands at USD 90 million (KES 7.75 billion).

He has composed the score for cult-classic films such as The Lion King, Gladiator, The Dark Knight and Inception. He plans to compose the score for Zack Snyder’s upcoming 2013 film, Man of Steel.

Below is a table showing how much the College believes Kenyan musicians should earn based on their job description (Note that the rates have been adjusted to suit the cost of living in Nairobi):

MC Alemba’s Tees Are Out (Photo)

It has now become a fad for Kenyan artistes to release songs then shortly after design tees that complement them or seem to popularize the songs. One artist who’s gone the same road is MC Alemba. He recently launched his designer t-shirts in the US.

Named after his song with Kanjii Mbugua, “Bless My Way”, the greatly designed tees are already up for sale. Take a look;

Industry Heavyweights Throw Their Voices Into The MP Pay-off Debate!

Today, Maina Kageni and Tina Kagia have gone in H.A.M on our disgustingly gluttonous MPs!

Maina Kageni dedicated his show today to discussing our gluttonous MPs and their greed. For those of you not in the know, you are a shame to this beautiful land called Kenya! But uncle Chim Tuna will fill you in.

MPs have decided to hold session in the dead of night under the cloak of darkness and they awarded themselves an obscene send-off package. The package will have us recognizing them as national heroes even though most are more cowardly than an army of tin men -Wizard of Oz. They will enjoy more than just money, they will enjoy a state burial and flags will fly at halfmast when they die.

Tina Kagia tore into them declaring that any angry Kenyan should vote them out. Kageni was just as horrified and disgusted and so were his callers. Mwalimu King’ang’i was cast in the role of devil’s advocate but the barrage of angry callers was like a tsunami!

He was completely flummoxed! But one caller stuck out: he called in and said that Kenyans deserve to suffer for electing in selfish MPs. If anything, they should tripple the price they’s accepted which is 9million. That way Kenyans won’t vote for tribe but rather for visionary leaders.
Isn’t this the message the brave Boniface Mwangi has been trying to convey with his “Mavulture” campaign? It’s time we put boots to these greedy Mp’s booties! Kick them out!

Guess which Kenyan artist Rabbit respects and admires the most…

Every good artist has a mentor behind their inspiration and motivation in music. Most of our Kenyan artistes have international artistes as their icons of inspiration and some, like our dear friend Rabbit, just stick to their roots.

If there is one Kenyan artist that Rabbit aka Kaka Sungura respects most and has also been under his mentor-ship, is Juliani.

No one would even dare ask why Juliani feels this spot. With his talent, experience he has had in the hard core Kenyan music industry and the general musical journey that he has been through which has resulted to the lyrical prowess and stage magnificence that is himself, it is clearly evident.

The two are also very close friends. This explains the maturity of lyrics the two put out in their songs and now, after a long wait, they have collaborated in a song.

After Maina Kageni Announced His Resignation From Classic FM, He Hints At New Career Path!

Maina Kageni announced his resignation from Classic FM last month and that caused alot of furore! All his fans and their aunties took 3 days just calling in asking him to change his mind but to no avail!

Well, it would seem that his last conversation with Pulse could have hints at what he wants to do with himself after his radio days are behind him. We know that he was *and i hope i get this right so Ciku Muiruri doesn’t attempt to twittercide me* hired as the EMCEE for the James Ingram concert  who came to Nairobi to grace us with a 10,000 Ksh per ticket performance. So it should come as no surprise that he will be looking to venture into event emceeing.

In said conversation with Pulse, Maina Kageni alluded to bringing another legend in RnB circles. Actually 3 legends. He seeks to bring to Kenya an RnB group of yore and went as far as telling Pulse, “All i can tell you is that it’s going to be a big concert with one of the biggest RnB groups of all times; watch this space”.

I shudder at the thought of the cost! If one chap cost such a pretty penny, how much will a trio cost?

Colonel Mustapha seems to have made some new year resolutions. Among them is taking the Kenyan music scene by storm!

There will be no slacking off and shirking from the Ogopa lad as he promises to release a couple of collabos that are sure to keep us all dancing. He had taken a musical hiatus a while back but he announced his return with the jam “Kupe” and he vows to wow us with the new tracks.

Jaguar Weeps After Losing Neighbour In Government Hospital

Jaguar opened up to Pulse about a lose he had recently suffered that he has taken heavily.

Apparently, the top Kenyan artist lost a neighbour to what he considers to be Government callousness. The neighbour in question was taken ill and rushed to a government hospital only for Jaguar and the deceased’s family to find no nurses.

If you remember, the Government led by Anyang Nyong’o had refused to negotiate with the nurses over the latter’s grievances. Well, that arrogance from the government cost this family a father, husband, brother and son and cost Jaguar a friend.

Pulse quoted Jaguar as having said, “How can someone stay in hospital for two weeks and have those concerned watch him die simply because they cannot hold dialogue and solve the issue? Is this human really? When i got the news and offered to help get him treated in a private hospital, it was too late. It is rather sad.” He added, “When i sing about “Matapeli”, these are the issues i address. We can’t keep on electing corrupt leaders and expect lives to change.”

Hot Toklezea Singer Chantelle Single Again!

Chantelle a single girl again!

According to Pulse, Chantelle has ended things with her long term boyfriend. The lad is an actor and has appeared in some of the leading local productions. Seems things weren’t working out between her and the lad she was cohabiting with. Pulse claim that no explanation was forthcoming as to why the pair decided to end things after dating for so long. The pair at one point was reportedly engaged and subsequently planning a wedding (well that would be the next logical step would it not?).

Sigh, it would seem the poor lad’s loss is Team Mafisi’s gain as now i’m sure a plethora of lads will be beatng a path down to Chantelle to plead out their case -read kumkatia. The pair who as i said earlier had taken to cohabiting have also ended their living arrangement according to Pulse. The rather comely lass has now taken to hanging out with other musicians. The yowzer though was the fact that Pulse has decided to label her a one hit wonder.

Celebs React To MPs Hefty Sendoff Package

Finance minister Njeru Githae conspired with MPs in a twilight deal on Wednesday that saw each of the lawmakers get a colossal Sh9.3 million in a golden handshake.

The MPs also approved that each of them gets an armed bodyguard, a diplomatic passport for the retiree and his wife and unlimited access to the executive lounge for Very Important Person in all the airports within Kenya – news courtesy of the Daily Nation.

Here is what our local celebrities had to say about this controversial move:

Kalekye MumoKalekye Mumo, Kiss 100 Radio host, said: “Kibaki to the rescue!”

Trailer for Film About Post-election Violence Finally Out

The trailer for what should be this year’s most anticipated film is finally out. The preview for Something Necessary came about two days after the poster was released, months after the third production from One Fine Day Films was announced.

“Something Necessary is a film about a pivotal period in the life of Anne, a woman struggling to rebuild her life after the civil unrest that swept Kenya following the 2007 elections, claiming the life of her husband, the health of her son and leaving her isolated farm in ruins.

Joseph, a troubled young gang member who participated in the countrywide violence is drawn to Anne and her farm seemingly in search of redemption. Both he and Anne need something that only the other can give to allow them to shed the painful memories of their past and move on — but will either of them find it?”

From the trailer, we can see that the main cast is fairly unknown, something that a lot of the Kenyan audience has been known to like. Something Necessary will premiere on January 25th. Check out the trailer below.

Admin of the Facebook Page Accused of Hate Speech Detained By CID

It seems the Government wasn’t joking when it issued a stern warning on Facebook pages and blogs for spreading hate messages because just hours after the announcement, the administrator of one of the Facebook pages mentioned in the Government watch-list has been arrested.

The admin of “Gor Mahia is Not a Club, Its a Lifestyle. But do we say”, Collins Okello better known as Dr. Jarunda Jaluth Mambobiad was this morning arrested and taken to CID headquarters for questioning over hate speech statements on his page. “Gor Mahia is Not a Club, Its a Lifestyle. But do we say” was named alongside five other pages for spreading hate messages.

However, according to reliable sources, Collins has since been let off the hook. Also, there’s a new “Gor Mahia is Not a Club, Its a Lifestyle. But do we say” page on Facebook after the first one was deleted and already has over 3000 likes barely 4 hours after being created.

VIDEO: American Idol Winner Herding Goats in Kenya

Last thing you would expect someone to do after winning the talent reality show in the world is herding goats. But that is how Kris Allen, the 8th winner of American Idol, spent his holidays.

The 27-year old singer was in Kenya for a charity mission, which saw him get involved in various projects to give back to the community thanks to World Vision. The initiative is part of the True Spirit of Christmas tour which began at the end of November.

In this video, Kris Allen helps herd the goats that were gifted to the Kenyan community he was living with at that leg of the tour. Renowned Youthful Social Entrepreneur and Pastor Gets into Politics

Gowi Odera is no stranger to in showbiz. A pastor and well-known leader in Nairobi circles, the youthful pastor has plunged into politics. Running for the Westlands Parliamentary seat, Gowi is promising heavens (no pun intended) for residents of Westlands.

As a matter of fact, his campaign machinery is already in top gear and is pledging to improve Westlands to become a city within a city by investing in Education opportunities, promoting a conducive environment for businesses to thrive, creating employment opportunities and empowering youth enterprise.

Running on a CORD ticket, Gowi made his maiden political speech on the 22nd of December last year at Uhuru Park during a CORD Rally. He was also vocal in mobilizing people to register as voters during the voter registration period especially in Westlands.

All the best Pastor Gowi.

This Is Why Calif Had to Take Down Jua Cali’s Latest Video

Jua Cali is releasing his next album, Genge Yajayo, soon. A few singles off it have already been released, including his collaboration with Sana, Geti Kali. The video was released only to be pulled down and a new one put up.

Jua Cali told Willy M. Tuva that the earlier production was shoddy and the makers of the video were not willing to reason with them to make it better so they had no choice but to pull it down.

On reaching Calif Records for the details of the story, the studio manager told us, “The first video wasn’t a Calif Production. They were Sanaipei’s pals, aspiring video directors. As Calif per our policy to uplift and encourage new talent, we agreed with Sanaipei to give them a chance to showcase their talent but unfortunately the end result wasn’t up-to standard.”

Size 8 Remembers How Willy M. Tuva Helped Her With Fare When She Was Upcoming

Yesterday Mzazi Willy M. Tuva celebrated seven years hosting Mambo Mseto on Citizen Radio. The presenter talked to a couple of celebrtities and fans to ask them about their Mambo Mseto experience, most interesting of which was singer Size 8’s.

“Nakumbuka tulikuwa studio tumeketi na akina Jua Cali. Hiyo ndiyo ile time nilikuwa nimetoa Size 8, nilikuwa naitwa Linet back then. Akina Jua Cali walikuwa wananiambia kabla ngoma i-hit, lazima ipitie kwa mkono ya Mzazi. Kwa hivyo hiyo ndiyo ilikuwa wish yangu, ngoma yangu ichezwe Mambo Mseto.

Nakumbuka nikienda Citizen radio nimesimama hapo nje, nimenyeshewa, natetemeka nikikungojea. Sijui kama unaweza kumbuka hiyo siku. Halafu ukakuja, ukachukua ngoma yangu, lakini haukuenda. Ni kama uli-notice sikuwa sawa. Ukaniuliza shida ni nini. Nikakuambia mimi hata sina fare. Ukaniuliza mahali naishi, nikakuambia Kariobangi South.

Ulichukua gari yako ukanipeleka mpaka Jogoo Road. Halafu bado haukuniacha hivyo, unakumbuka? Ukanipatia mia mbili na fare kutoka hapo ilikuwa tu 30 bob. Kwa hivyo, mimi Mambo Mseto imenilea kimziki na pia njia ingine. Na-appreciate sana.”

INCREDIBLY HILARIOUS! Presenting the new Agwambo Style (video)

Man, you won’t believe the opportunity Psys created for guys who have been rather idle (no offence) just before the Gangnam Style viral song came through.

We’ve seen the various parodies that guys all over the world have created, all with crazy humor ofcourse (otherwise what’s the point) and there reached a time when it became clear that the parodies are getting old.

That did not stop these Kenyan cats to make their own which as it turns out, is really hilarious. Honestly, I expected this to be just another waste of a click but it is actually very funny. I enjoyed every single part of this parody and so will you, as political as it is.
