And now, the Voodoo Seller is back with some more voodoo (video)

He might just be one of the fastest rappers that are currently taking over the Kenyan airwaves. I mean this guy spits lines fast like a jilted woman.

He goes by the name VoodooSeller and he got it all. The rhymes, the flow, presence, he even got himself some serious swag. I’ve always heard about Voodooseller in the Kenyan music circles, especially when you talk about the likes of Khaligraph Jones and Kayvo KForce.

Now I understand why his name always falls among those of high rated Kenyan rappers. This guy got mad skill.

How he flips his lyrics through his light tongue so fast in the first verse gets you locked onto what else he has to offer in the song. The song by the way is titled ‘Hip Hop Politics’ and is all about what goes on around the hip hop scene.

Pretty good! Kudos VoodooSeller. This is burning hot.

Check out the video right here.

How Maina Kageni Makes His Millions

As you all know by now, Maina Kageni, despite his polarizing show, is minting major dough at the end of the day. He has been known to drive luxury cars such as Hummers and the BMW X6. This is as a result of diversifying his revenue streams. Here is a breakdown of how he makes his money:

 1. Radio hosting

His popular radio show is literally what holds Classic 105 up as a radio station. It blows the rest of the competition out of the water when it comes to morning shows. Because of this incredible leverage Maina has, he has negotiated for himself a salary of over one million shillings a month from radio. It should be noted that he has announced his retirement from the station.

2. Emceeing

Maina Kageni emcees at only select events, where he gets paid up to 400,000 per event. He targets the upper classmen sort of events, who are ready to pay such amounts to have the most famous people at their event.

3. Real estate

This is where Maina proved his business acumen. Like most rich men in Kenya, Maina bought a ka-plot with his cash, but it wasn’t just any plot. He bought housing in Miami, USA, during the real-estate crash late last decade. This made him get prime property for extremely cheap prices. He now rents out his Miami house, and sometimes uses it to take him and his friends on holiday.

4. Social media

Maina’s Facebook page is one of the largest in Kenya, with about 200,000 fans, and his Twitter profile is growing as well. He uses the pages not only to talk to his fans, but to also promote brands for a fee. His page is in such high demand from advertisers that he has contracted a talent management agency named Trinc Media to negotiate deals on his behalf. It is said that he makes over one million bob on  a good month just through his page.

5. Writing

Maina has recently started a column with Sport On! magazine, which led to people asking whether he was going to quit his day job at Classic. Turns out that wasn’t the case. It is just a side hustle, which he is paid handsomely for.

Would You Split the Bill with Your Date? The Subject of Fena’s New Hit

Going Dutch is a term that indicates that each person participating in a group activity pays for himself, rather than any person paying for anyone else, particularly in a restaurant bill. [wikipedia]

Some myths speculate that the phrase originates from Dutch etiquette. Apparently, in the Netherlands, it is not unusual to pay separately when dating.

And now the term is the subject of a brand new track by the ever phenomenal Fena Gitu, Kagwe Mungai and Toshi. The track was produced by Jaaz Odongo, Ghafla! nominee for Producer of the Year 2012, who also worked on Fena’s last hit Africa Massive.

Have you watched ‘In The Eyes Of A Stranger’ yet? You gotta

When it comes to theatre, Kenya is on point. Let’s not even front. I cannot even begin naming Kenyan plays that have been impressively successful over the past few years. I’ll just not make it to the end.

Now, comes in ‘In The Eyes Of A Stranger’. A play by Wolfgang Maria Bauer and directed by Gilbert Lukali.

This is a one of a kind play that goes into the mind of a psychopath. Never before have I seen something something like this from Kenya. That is why I can’t afford to miss it and so should you.

It started playing at the Phoenix Players on the 30th of January and will continue till the 9th of February.

Here’s it’s synopsis.

The enigmatic center of the play is Pinon, a hermit who 18 years ago locked himself away in his seaside house after possibly cutting his wife into small pieces and permanently scarring the face of Gratia, a local prostitute. Now he sits at the edge of the sea cliff, observing the would-be suicides who come to this lonely spot.
They include Sebastian, a nervous young man with a heart condition who has just been jilted, and Daniel, who is suffering from questions over his sexuality and abandonment by his parents when he was a child. The third visitor is Vera, a runaway bride who comes to see Pinon out of curiosity after hearing his story from a hotel porter.
Bauer explores variations on his title theme. Sebastian asks Pinon to move into the light so he can see his eyes. Vera wonders to an unseen companion how she must appear in their eyes. The porter begs Vera to let him watch her change her clothes. Along the way Bauer weaves the characters’ lives together, in “La Ronde” fashion, shaping ever-changing onstage and offstage duets. In this complex intertwining, Pinon lives in a house he won from the porter in a card game; the porter relates Pinon’s history to Vera; Sebastian wants Vera; Daniel wants Sebastian; Pinon wants to be Daniel’s substitute father figure.

For a Woman Who Simulates Sex Positions on TV, K24’s Gertrude Mungai is Pretty Conservative

Sex therapist Gertrude Mungai has one of the most interesting shows on TV (as you can see here). K24’s Connect has become even more extreme of late, now having full on sex simulations.

In an interview with the East African edition of True Love, she proved that despite owning a sex toy shop, she said, “I promote marriages, not vibrators.”

She believes that sex and all that comes with it should only be practiced and enjoyed in marriage. “The sex toys in my shop are to promote duo sex, not solo sex,” told True Love.

The magazine’s Pauline Muindi adds, “Gertrude is a pleasant potpourri of cosrvatism, sexual liberation and sensuality.”

Kenya’s first sex auntie also clarifies, “The media branded me a sexologist but I don’t consider myself as such. I am a lifestyle designer on sex and relationships. It says so on my business card.”

MUST WATCH: Kenyan kid thrills judges at the American Idols auditions by singing MJ’s ‘Who’s Loving You’

When I say Kenyans are just amazing, my Nigerian ting colleague Chimwani Obiajulu thinks I’m just too proud of this beautiful country and its people and begs to defer. I am now glad that this video helped shut his mouth.

He goes by the name Sanni M’Mairura and he participated in San Antonio’s American Idol Auditions some time back. Just as my mouth is wide open as I type down this article, is exactly how the judges were during this kid’s performance.

He speaks Swahili, proudly representing his roots and amazes the judges and audience by splendidly singing Michael Jackson’s ‘Who’s Loving You’.

Oh, I almost forgot to mention that he also dances. Very well infact. The judges just had to compliment his runs and voice control.

Follow this link and check out the video. This is just amazing. I’m so proud of this Kenyan kid.

Sexy rapper shows us just how much of a bad chick she is (video)

Kenya is full of talent, especially when it comes down to music. It is abundant among the youth and that is not up for debate. It is so visible especially when you attend the talent search events. Makes me more proud to be Kenyan.

Enough of the chit chat. Let’s get back to what’s really important right now. This sexy rapper. First came STL (Stella Mwangi), then came Xtatic. They all brought sex appeal to Kenya’s rap industry. There is even another newcomer, Dora. Yeah! They coming up pretty fast, ain’t they?

And now, for the first time ever on video, on her debut track, I present to you Baby T. You might recognise her from Octopizzo’s ‘Bila Mic’ remix. She did a pretty awesome job on it too.

She now has her debut video out and it is spanking hot. Seductively sexy! I will ask about the age later, for now, let’s all just ogle at her in this hot new video titled ‘Bad Chick’. Come on, you know you wanna! Resistance is futile.

Check it out below.

These two need no introduction. Their songs do it for us. Infact, attempting to introduce these two great gospel artistes will be an offence to the Kenyan music industry.

The Lounge will be happening again tonight at the Petma Restaurant and Mbuvi will be performing live alongside Makena.

On the decks will be DJ Soxxy, DJ Celeb and DJ Sanch.

Entrance is only Sh. 200.

It doesn’t get better than this.

Nonini launches provocative yet educational calendar

Familiar with Nonini’s selfless project on helping albinos get through their daily lives with ease? Better yet, are you familiar with his song ‘colour kwa face’ in which he featured beautiful African queen Christine Apondi?

Ofcourse you do. It was only one of the most successful music campaigns ever established, with aim of raising awareness on the hardships albinos have to go through everyday.

The project brought to light the need to help raise funds to purchase sunscreen lotion in bulk for donation to albino families that cannot meet the cost.

Nonini has now launched a calendar with the same aims and intentions he had when he started this project. Pretty awesome, huh?

I have to say though, it really provocative, don’t you think?

Comedy Club’s JB Masanduku Hospitalized After Being Drugged by Thugs

Top comedian and host of Comedy Club, JB, is currently in hospital undergoing treatment after getting drugged by unknown people in a Westlands club.

The comedian was having a few drinks, at some point with Ian Mugoya and Nick Mutuma among other celebrities, before he left the group and was nowhere to be seen within the pub.

He was discovered outside on the street half-conscious on Electric Avenue. Luckily, he had managed to contact his girlfriend’s sister before he passed out. He was immediately rushed to MP Shah Hospital. According to his publicist, the comedian who got his big break on Churchill Live, is in no danger. JB will remain in hospital for another day for monitoring. He is grateful to nurse Yvonne and Dr. Koda who attended to him. JB was robbed of most of his possessions during the incident.

Dean, the Changes Club manager has tried helping with the investigations and already went through the CCTV footage. He has already ascertained that the incident did not take place at the club. As JB was found outside on electric avenue, it could have taken place anywhere in the club-riddled street.

Top 5 Common Misconceptions About Ghafla!

Let Uncle Chim Tuna rant for a minute. I’m tired of being told our information is dubious or that our site is a rumour site. It seems it’s time i clear a couple of misconceptions about Ghafla!

#5. That Ghafla is a gossip site

I remember laughing at Baba Ghafla once and teasing him that he is Kenya’s gossip girl. We were hanging out out with our friend George Mugambi talking about how all Ghafla articles should be signed out with “XoXo”!

Then i came onboard and realized that that misconception is actually a huge problem! Everyone thinks i’m a gossip and when i meet avid fans of Ghafla, they ask me for the latest gossip. No, i have no gossip to engage you with. For gossip go to Kenyan Post or Nairobi Exposed on Facebook! Leave dis place!

#4. That our stories are non-factual

Ghafla stories are all factual and those that aren’t are opinion pieces where a writer gives you his take on things. When we write about artists, chances are, the source of information came from the horse’s mouth! Everyone who concerns themselves with shouting from the rooftop about our articles being false is either ignorant, misinformed or just an attention seeker.

We actually pride ourselves for being an honest site. Ask yourself why we’ve never been hit with a civil or criminal suit for either libel or disseminating false information that is damaging to an individual’s public standing? It’s because our sources are impeccable!

#3. That Ghafla! is run by just one fat chap hidden behind a computer screen

Ghafla is made up of a team of dedicated writers who are always hard at work… Except when they are trolling each other. There is Kone Sekou, Adam Wagwau, Jeff Omondi and Me.

#2. We are exclusively male

We aren’t. But the fact that there aren’t any female employees in the office on the regular means we are chocking in a strong cloud of testosterone! But with that said, the team is comprised of Nali Sharon who is a writer, Suzzanne Imbuhila who doubles up as both HR personnel and legal consultant and Cinju Muiruri who does the accounts.

#1. Uncle Chim Tuna is a douchebag

I am. The end.

K24 Has Also Poached A Prominent NTV Anchor

It seems K24 are on a buying spree, first poaching loads of talent from the newsroom of Citizen TV, and now we are learning that they have also poached Rashid Ronald from the NTV newsdesk.

Rashid Ronald is renowned for being one of the only news anchors who can ably do both Kiswahili and English news in equal measure. He was first at NTV, until he was courted by BBC Africa, where he moved for some time, before coming back home like the prodigal son to NTV .

Why these media wars persist is a mystery to me, but it seems K24 are going ballistic on the HR side. Uhuru Kenyatta, the owner of the station, is also currently a leading presidential candidate in the 2013 Kenya elections, where he is also reported to be spending large sums of money getting artists to sing for his party.

VIDEO: Brenda Wairimu Reveals Her Mystery Projects

Brenda Wairimu‘s project, which she has hinted at on her social media platforms, has finally been revealed. Through a video she released last evening, she explains her life, journey in showbiz and most importantly, reveals that she likes Pulp Fiction and Sound of Music. Rrrr!

Below is a transcript of her revelations which will prompt fans to look at her in different light:

“I think it’s only fair if you have all the opportunities–maybe not all, but you’re fortunate enough to have some opportunities–then it’s only fair that you give back. And that’s where my head was at when I accepted to be the ambassador for Computers For Growth, where we help students from not so well off schools with computers. We just give them at least a level playing field so they can at least compete with students from other schools who have these facilities.”

“Me and a couple of friends of mine started our own initiative and it’s called Cool For School, where we provide reusable sanitary towels for students from not so well off schools because we realized how much time they lose staying home. And we see their grades going up. It’s not so big right now but we’re really hoping that in time, we can get the support and just make it bigger.”

And at the end she explains the #BBB hashtag: “I don’t want to be a fortune teller but what I know is I Believed and I Began so I just want to have Become in 10 years and just be B.”

So, by now you must know that Jalang’o’s Kiss FM show today is actually his last. He is quitting the radio station today to concentrate on and elevate his own media company, which has now been around for a while.

Quitting Kiss Fm however, was not as easy as most would thing it to be. Jalang’o has a close relationship with all his colleagues at the station and it was difficult, as we came to learn through this letter, to have to leave the station.

This is the heartfelt letter that Jalang’o posted today.

“Its hard to tell you this but in one way or another I have to. In life everybody has a dream and until you dare to execute that dream, it will just be a dream. You have the choice to sleep and enjoy the dream or wake up and chase the dream.
After 5 years at KISS 100, I have decided to chase my dream somewhere else. I have decided to go for another challenge in the quest of my happiness somewhere else!

Today is my last show at KISS and how I wish I had done it with Caroline and officially say bye to her only that she was not able to. I’m hosting my last show here with a great woman who was the first to welcome me at Kiss 100 and believed in me. That’s my sister Kalekye Mumo. I love and will miss you a lot. Working with you has been fun!.

Shaffie I cant say bye to you because you know where we meet. Caroline you were my boss, my friend, my sister and my teacher. I learnt a lot from you for my career and life. I can’t afford it! Linda Nyangweso, lil sister you the best. Your smile always brightens my day. I’ll miss you. Will surely miss you!
To you my fans… mmm I don’t have fans, I have my family… #TeamJalas! To you my family we are still together. I love and will always!

Brenda Wairimu to Unveil Her Mystery Project Today

Actress and model Brenda Wairimu is set to release something to her fans today that started with her unveiling customized Christmas cards and a sexy  2013 calendar and for her fans dubbed BBB (Believe, Begin, Become) at the end of last year.

From her updates and posts, the talented and tenacious actress has been counting down days to what some have concluded it’s a reality show, a track she is releasing…some even saying the track features boyfriend Juliani.

The Sexiest Celeb of 2012 according to Ghafla! says, “#BBB is a step towards the rest of my career; it’s my guide to see if I’m growing career wise, since joining the industry two years ago. Wanted something that will help analyze if I’m heading towards becoming what I want or not with everything I have done so far.”

“As an actress, I play different roles, embody different personalities and sometimes you are not sure if there is growth, in everything you are doing so decided to kinda play myself a bit reminiscing how, where it all started, what I have managed to do to date, hoping to see the graph head towards becoming all I have dreamed of becoming,” she said.

It was just for my team and my own analysis at first but later thought why not share it with people who have supported and believed in me from the beginning so they can get to gauge if am growing or slacking. It’s also my way of marketing myself worldwide and exposing myself to other boundaries. It’s the closest thing my fans and critics will come to knowing the real me hence the title ‘Being Brenda’ says a calm Brenda.

The much clip is online on her social networks for public viewing, today as we all get to gauge with her if the graph is going up or down. Talk of putting skill to test. Well the mystery ends today.

The Hottest Christian Hip Hop Event is Back

The Vault is a medium through which Christian hip hop artists get to share thetreasures that God wants to reveal to each and every person through His Word. With lyricism, rhymes, poetry and a journey of their experience in ministry and in salvation, these Kingdom ministers are set, not only to entertain but to point this generation to Christ.

The bi-monthly event was an idea of five close friends who shared a common love for Hip Hop music. The concept behind the vault was to create a platform where hip hop and poetic artists in Kenya and around the world can get an opportunity to showcase their talents without any limitations.

We found out that compared to artists from other genres, hip hop artists in Kenya barely get the opportunity to perform in this other events and most of them end up discouraged and eventually giving up on their dreams, it is for this reason that the Vault concept was born.

The bi-monthly event aims to get artists these opportunities, exposure, mentorship and also training them on how to become artists of international standards. The idea behind having the event once in two months was to kill the monotony of having a monthly event, and also have people looking forward to the event.

The third Edition will see Shem Otanga a.k.a SHEM, one of Kenya’s illest lyricist grace the stage as the Focus artist of the day. Shem is known for hits such as Wape Habari and King’s Mic. He will also be sharing about his life, journey, music ministry, the various challenges and victories that he has gone through in his music career. Ghafla Exclusive: Jalang’o quits Kiss FM today

With the mass exodus that has been going on in the media lately, it is not surprising anymore to hear a top TV anchor or Radio presenter switching stations.n

As huge stations poach top notch journalists, take for instance K24 poaching Belinda Obura, Tom Mboya among others from Citizen TV, some journalists are quitting, moving to greener pastures.

Jalang’o has been co-hosting one of the most interesting and most popular radio show on Kiss 100 FM, along with his colleague, Caroline Mutoko. Their topics of discussions have earned them a huge number of loyal listeners, simultaneously boosting their show ratings.

All that may be about to come tumbling down as it now seems that this hilarious radio presenter/comedian is just about to call it quits. We have just found out from reliable in-house sources that Jalang’o will be leaving Kiss FM today. Today’s show is infact his last.

On which station he might be joining next, Jalang’o says that he is now concentrating on his already established media company, taking his business to the next level. Now, that defines a successful man! Congratulations Jalang’o.

FREE DOWNLOAD: Jua Cali & Sanaipei – Geti Kali

Calif Records are known for giving away music for free, their principle being that the resulting exposure for an artist would be good for them getting shows and other contracts. It is also very hard to get Kenyans to buy music, since they are addicted to sites like Tubidy and Waptrick.

So here we are, exposing one of the tracks that Calif have been kind enough to let the public download for free. Kindly note that this free download is hosted on Calif Record’s own website, so no copyright infringement is taking place here:

Ghafla POLL Result: Mingle vs Blankets vs 6AM Parties. Which Upscale Event Is The Poshest? We Have The Answer!

We had sought to demystify the more posh and popular event that attracts the elites of Nairobi and i do believe we have an answer ladies and gentlemen.

The upper echelon put their vote to task to do the talking to them and boy did it ever. And i’m guessing that you like i thought that Blankets & Wine would emerge as the more popular with the middle and upper class aye? Wrong! Infact, they had to rally really late to avoid being the least popular of the 3!

Here is how the total tally stood:

Statistics:

Mingle
Votes: 48

21.5%

Blankets and wine
Votes: 56

25.1%

6AM Parties
Votes: 119

53.4%

Number of Voters   223

As you can see, The Mingle is gaining popularity rather fast. Maybe this has to do with the fact that they offer childhood games and also the fact that it is an event tailored towards getting people to interact. I don’t know. All i know is that you have spoken!
