Top Artists Headline Chagua Peace Concert (Photos)

Yesterday top Kenyan artists converged at the historical Uhuru Park for “Chagua Peace; Keep the Promise” Concert. This comes after leading actors and a section of celebs pledged peace messages in separate videos. The concert coincided with 5th anniversary of the Peace Accord that brought an end to the post-election violence that had gripped the country after the disputed General Elections.

Since then, each February 28 at exactly 1pm, Kenyans from different walks of life stand still and sing the National Anthem to show our solidarity and commitment to keep the peace. The artists who attended the event not only provided lots of entertainment but also preached peace in support of the Kenya Red Cross Society campaign. Take a look;

Santa Fe Is Where It’s At This Saturday!

When it comes to raving, there are different groups of people and herds of party animals. Some like cheap joints so locals do it for them. The problem with cheap joints is that the quality of patrons is usually wanting so you end up fighting or being robbed.

Then there’s the lot that likes loud noisy, dimly lit clubs. The problem with these is that you will end up hitting on and going home with Gholum from Lord Of The Rings. Then there are the ratchet clubs where the bouncer is a pain but they still get patronized nonetheless. It beats me why such clubs get patronized. But there is one class of clubs; the classy clubs where people are mature. Not advanced in age so Tribeka please take your wheelchairs and wheel out of here.

dj.jpg

I mean the clubs where the patrons know they came out to have a good time and they want a chilled out atmosphere. If you are this type of grown and sexy individual, then Santa Fe is where you should be this weekend! Usually they have an event called Abstrakt Saturdays but this time round they’ve decided to increase the heat and degree of the party. Santa Fe is switching it up and for more indepth details, you should click on this link to get said details. But the long and short of it is that this time instead of just one DJ holding it down, there will be 4: DJ Briizy, DJ FAB, DJ Fresh and your’s truly DJ Abstrakt.

And though the party is being turnt up, the prices are the same old friendly prices:

All local beers @ 200
Heineken @270
Jameson @ 150
All zappa @ 100
Johnny walker red @100
Johnny walker black @150
cocktails @ 400

Never Again: Dela Releases Peace Song

Dela is back again with a brand new track promoting peace.

Dela has already appeared in another conscious song, Voters vs. Vulture with Juliani which was released two weeks ago. She has previous appeared on collaborations with Tanzania’s Mzungu Kichaa and Mwafreeka’s track about his childhood.

On her latest release, Never Again, she says, “The writing on the wall is the writing on our hearts: Kenya must not burn. Kenya must not mourn. Never again! Everything is going to be alright. Tuwe salama.”

Never Again was written by Dela Maranga and Mtukampuni with production by Mtukampuni at Zed Studios. The track was mixed and mastered by Gideon Kimanzi at Red Mercury. Additional instrumentation includes Moses Odumbe (acoustic guitar), Asaph Uzele (bass) and David Omamu Ndashia (electric guitar).

Check out the track below.

“If This Country Burns…” – A Message From Kuweni Serious

This video was made almost three years ago but this might be an apt time to watch it.

Kuweni Serious believes in a better Kenya and “Fighting the EVIL powers of apathy,” so about two years ago they made this short video about Kenyans taking responsibility for their country. It is less about keeping peace and more about taking active participation on issues concerning the country.

The video was produced and directed by Mbithi Masya (also editor) and Jim Chuchu (also writing and score) for Kuweni Serious. The narration is done by Bill Sellanga. They are three of the four members of experimental music group, Just-A-Band.

Check out the video below and the transcript follows after.

There is a difference between the one who rents a house and the one who owns a house. The one who rents a house doesn’t care if the walls crack and crumble, they can always move to another house.

The one who owns a house knows that no one else will take care of it, thus they paint the walls and mend the cracks.

More than 60% of Kenya’s population consists of young men and women like us.

The problem is that we behave like tenants of Kenya. We have let the older generation tear this country apart. We have let them use us to fight their battles. We have let them loot this country. We have let them fool us into thinking that we’re not fit to run this country ourselves.

So we hide in our alcohol, in our religions and on the Internet as if there is some other Kenya out there that we shall move to when this one crumbles. We sit at home and wait for others to fight for us on the streets.

We want green cards instead of voter’s cards. We are angry, but we are too scared to do anything about it. It is not Obama’s job to save this country. It is not the donors’ job, and the government has shown that it is not their job, either.

Responsibility is not shared, it is earned. Freedom is not given, it is taken.

When we decide we want freedom, we will have to get it ourselves.

Because if this country burns, we burn with it.

Here’s What Amina Had To Say About Bamboo’s Brother Kimya Dissing Her!

Remember the story we gave you about Bamboo’s little brother taking shots at HomeBoyz Radio’s Amina? Mhmm! I told you i’d reach out to her to get her side of the story aye? Well, i did. And she was away at the Mara having a ball i presume.

And this is what the lass who once had a twitter run in with Baba Ghafla had to say about the unsavoury comments Kimya, the former sound engineer at Headbangerz Ent. made about her:

Kimya Miyaki

“I don’t even know him.”

Something is clearly amiss given that even Kimya’s wife and the rest of the people who were backstage with him when he had a run-in with Amina came out to vouch for Kimya’s side of things. But that’s just the nature of the entertainment industry. We’ll but keep it Ghafla for more information as this story develops further. But you can find more about this Kimya Miyaki by following this link here.

Octopizzo Warned: Told Not To Mess With This Rapper!

Where my hiphop heads at? Octopizzo has been put on notice by Khaligraph Jones. The rapper who has never hidden his dislike for Octo, Numba Nane’s finest has taken to Facebook page to hit out at Octo. This is what the lad had to say:

“I am not in a competition with any rapper in kenya but Teddy Kamau is really starting to piss me off with the insults, I have been ignoring this dude for months now. Am a peaceful guy and so for the last time i warn you, Octopizzo, stop using that fake a/c cause everybody knows you are the nigga behind it. I dont want you to say i used you 2get fame and thats why am not throwing any punches, so just do your thing and let a brother do his.. Remember to vote peacefuly come march 4th,, God bless Kenya.”

The irony of the peaceful elections message is also not lost on me given the backdrop of the veiled threat to Octo. This looks like beef is about to unfold! But controversy is nothing new to this lad. Find out what he had to say about his alleged beef with Camp Mulla here and what he said about Esther Arunga’s hubby Quincy.

Juliani and these seven artistes worked overnight translating horrific PEV stories into this song (video)

Eight artistes from different counties of Kenya came together in this song for one reason… letting Kenyans know exactly what those affected by the PEV went through.

No! This is not a song composed from the ideas they have on what people had to go through. Not at all. They actually had to sit down with women and children, especially those from Dagoretti, as they shared their stories of struggle, triumph and hopes.

Juliani led seven other artistes through the composition of this love and peace filled lyrics, with hope that Kenya and other countries as well may learn something from it. The main lesson being LOVE ofcourse.

These eight artistes actually worked overnight in studio, to the wee hours of the morning, compiling the stories they derived from the concerned women and children, into this song, titled ‘Mama Kenya’.

I am pleased that the song possesses an Afro-Soul feel, therefore bringing out that African-Kenyan character and culture very well.

Take five minutes of your time today, and watch this video. Most importantly, listen to the lyrics, sing along, and vote wisely.

Another artiste releases a ridiculously hilarious trailer for his new video

Kenyan artistes have found a new way of keeping their fans busy and entertained while they are getting ready to launch their new tracks and videos.

Actually, thing is, I have realised this is popular only among the Jomino Records artistes.

Gkon is now just about to launch the video to his new song titled ‘ni kuzitoka’. The rapper’s song is all about the dancefloor and all the activities that go down on it.

For the video teaser, the recording label has compiled short clips of hilarious dancing sessions from all over the world. I have to say that through this video, I have learned some dancing styles I never thought existed. You have to shed a tear of laughter as you watch this video teaser. It’s that funny.

Check it out.

Ghafla Hits The 4 Million Page Views Mark!

Ladies and gentlemen with your support, Ghafla has broken yet another glass ceiling. Broken? Nay, shattered that ceiling. We celebrated with you when Ghafla crossed over to receiving well over 2million page views. We celebrated with you when Ghafla got well over 500,000 visitors to the site.

Then all hell broke loose. The site experienced phenomenal growth. In less than three weeks, we reached well four million pageviews. We had 700,000+ people reading the articles we churn out. That is nothing short of gobsmacking growth. But the growing pains were lurking in the shadows and they struck when we least anticipated them. The site started crashing. The traffic to the site was more than the servers could handle. I even issued an apology on behalf of the team which you can read here.

But like i said in an earlier article, the Ghafla jaggernaut grinds on. Even as the number of naysayers and haters grows, the number of faithful readers grows even faster. But at the end of the day, you all matter. From the people who give us constructive criticism to those selling wolf tickets in the comment section, you all matter. And thank you for the hits.

XYZ Show’s production crew does the craziest Harlem Shake yet (video)

This new year, the Internet welcomed a newcomer to the viral videos category… THE HARLEM SHAKE!

Every single crazy but creative individual in the world has partnered up with a character just as crazy as he/she and done the Harlem Shake in an attempt to get the most views on YouTube.

It starts with a single or less than three people, in a mask or helmet, shaking the waist and hands, with the people in the background going about their business, not having a care in the world of what the crazy masked dancer is up to.

The second phase of the video brings everyone else in on the crazies. Now here, you are allowed to do anything that comes to mind as long as it’s vibrant and outrageous.

Many Kenyans have done their own version of the Harlem Shake but so far, non has impressed like the XYZ Show‘s production crew Harlem Shake.

VIDEO: Here’s What To Expect From Tonight’s Episode of Tujuane

After last week’s explosive episode, here’s what to expect from tonight’s episode of Tujuane.

The 13th episode was the source of drama, memes and even a retraction from one of the participants after she was castigated on social media.

Beating the hype of that episode is going to be hard but the 14th episode promises to be very interesting judging from the the promo clip. With lines like “I’m trying to remember where I told you I live on Facebook,” this one is definitely going to be another scorcher.

The matchmaking reality show hosted by Malonza and Yvonne airs on KTN every Friday at 8:00 p.m. Check out the next episode’s promo below.

Ghafla C.E.O Talks About His Life And His Experience Building Ghafla In This Inspiring Interview

Ladies and gentlemen, 3years ago Baba Ghafla was a completely dejected lad. He had been cast out of JKUAT like last night’s chipo. He was the porridge that had begun to go rancid. Do you know what happens to that porridge? Well in the Ghafla offices we’d feed it to Kone. But in life, it gets chucked.

And Kenya is an unforgiving society. People in Baba Ghafla’s circumstance get labelled names such as failures, bums, failed bums and other unsavoury names. But Baba Ghafla rose from the ashes of his failed pursuit of a degree in Electronic and Computer Engineering and grew a business out of a hobby. You know how your parents tell you your hobby for collecting damaged Barbie dolls is useless? Find a way to turn that into a business!

And Baba Ghafla’s story is now an inspiration to many. And The good folk at careerpoint felt it pertinent to share this college dropout’s story with you because like the phoenix, he emerged from the ashes. And ladies and gentlemen after this serious butt-licking, a raise should be in the offing! But here’s how that interview went down:

He is a college dropout and a great example of a flunker who can achieve success against the odds. He has proved that if you work hard then you can be successful no matter what. Even if you are from a not so rich family, even if you decide to leave college, if you have enough drive and focus you can make your dreams come true.

Mr Majani is the man behind one of widely read entertainment website in Kenya Ghafla! From showbiz stories, Beef Scandals, political drama, what’s hot and what’s not, just to mention but a few.

Dorcas Karuana, sought to find out how he has made it in making Ghafla! what it
is today.
1. You dropped out of college in JKUAT in 2006, yet you have become successful. What has it taken you?
Yes I was pursuing a degree in Electronic and Computer Engineering but failed 8 units after re-takes and was therefore discontinued. It was difficult for my parents since they had invested in me and had a lot of hopes in me and they felt I messed the chance to be in college. But yes, am now making it.

2. How did you Start Ghafla! ?
After my Discontinuation in College, I became an idler and I would listen to the collection of music I had accumulated from JKUAT. I had love for Kenyan music, and I remember looking online for lyrics of the song Jamani by Bamboo but never got it. Then I looked for other Kenyan Music but never found it. I saw this gap and started filling it while still at home. So I started running a website called kenyalyrics.com

3. You are the CEO of Ghafla Kenya, what challenges did face as you started?
I had no skills and I remember I then typed with one finger, and never knew how to do sales. I was forced to look for partners with the skills that I lacked. I got a friend I knew from nursery who had web design skills and after taking me around for 3 months so I had to do it alone. I learnt the skills the hard way from writing, web design, and editing, typing e.t.c

4. When did you make your big break?
A year after running kenyalyrics.com I got an investor who got interested in my idea and sold a share percentage of the site to him. We agreed to take a different direction and incorporate news and therefore rebranded to Ghafla. This also saw me expand my team from a one man’s show to a team of six employees.

5. Rumours have it that you sold some shares of the site for over 20 Million? Is this true?
No, my investor provided revenue of 2.5 million for a 25% share and further deposited 10Million as evaluation money.

6. Why did you choose entertainment content for your blog?
I realized there was a big gap as discussed earlier and also the fact that entertainment is the number one reason why people go online. In you tube music has the most views. Since the traditional media not treat entertainment news as important for example, the papers cover it once in a week and radio gives it a minute segment.

7. Who are your sources for the stories you post?
Our sources are usually the people involved in most stories. Some celebrities call us to give a story or even confirm rumours about them or others.

8. How do you ensure that the information you post is credible?
We always verify our facts and work with the audience to verify some stories. I make sure that every story has a writer’s name and full contacts so that any error spotted by the audience can be corrected.

9. Have you ever posted something only to regret later?
Yes I posted an article on Kibaki’s Pants Falling and got so many reactions from the readers as well as friends who were against posting such a story since it was disrespectful. I later withdrew the story and replaced it with an apology for the same.

10. Your site has got various music lyrics for Musicians in East Africa.  How do you deal with copyright issues?
I have no copyright issues with anyone since I only post lyrics and do not engage in business of selling their music therefore do not compete with them in making money.

11. How have you managed to make Ghafla a highly visited site?
Since entertainment is the number one reason people go online, I am dedicated and have shown a sense of reliability of new content with at least 40 stories in a day. Even media house sometimes use as the source for their stories. Also I have ensured the voice of Ghafle site is sensational, positive and funny.

12. What is your readership and how do you add value to them?
Our readership is between ages 18- 28years. This gives us 620,000 monthly readers and 4.5Million page views in a month.

13. How does blogging generate money for you?
Trough advertising we have scaled the website tremendously and it has a high growth rate. Also we are planning to make money directly from the users. Other bloggers have made money through selling tools like SEOs , adverts events or paying to see the content.

14. What are your future plans for Ghafla! in the next five years?
I want Ghafla! to be worth 100 Million shillings.

15. What do you wish you would do different if you were starting Ghafla! today?
I wish I would make money from day one.

16. What advice can you give to young people who imitate celebrities’ lifestyle?
Showbiz is a show off business therefore they should take it with a pinch of salt. What you see is not what you get.

17. What would you advise graduates who want to do blogging?
They should be willing to earn little for a slightly longer period. Most average Kenyans start business expecting to make money in 3-6 months but blogging is a long term investment and may take up to 18 months to make money.

18. If you went back to school what would you study?
Computer Science.

And you can find this and other inspiring interviews here.

Octopizzo’s Moving Dedication To His Daughter

Who said only mothers know how to love their children more? Think again… Rapper Octopizzo is one of the few dads out there who are not only proud of their children but also draw great inspiration from them.

Today happens to be the birthday for Octopizzo’s daughter, Tracy and the rapper took time to put down a very touching dedication to her. Take a look;

My life comes down to three significant moments:

First, the death of my father, then that of my Mum. This had to be the hardest time for me, the pain and emptiness I felt inside cannot be put in words..

And finally the birth of my beautiful daughter. I finally knew what love is. She was sent here to heal me. she brought light where there was darkness. Everything I did before her doesn’t make any sense .. My life begun when she was born.

The smallest things she does make me look forward to see what little suprise she has for me everyday. The joy she brings me is a drug on its own. When I come home, she will run to meet me at the door, give me a big hug, and everything that hapened that day just fades away…. she gives me pure love.

Since I was 15, my life was hard, I was always sad, miserable and for a moment there, it didnt seem like I had a future at all.

The birth of my daughter changed it all for me. She renewed my future, she made me want to live again.

Today 1st March, I say Happy Birthday my princess Tracy,
the best gift I can give you is my love and full support. I will make sure you have everything I didn’t, so you can be anything you want to be. All that I went through was not in vain but God prepping me for you. I will protect you and give you all I have.

You the best, you the future!!!

Daddy loves you princess.

YOUR VERY PROUD DAD OCTOPIZZO

Shaffie Weru Heading For Big Brother Africa?

According to The Star’s Word Is by Grace Kerongo, the producers of Big Brother Africa are eye balling Shaffie Weru with the intention of capturing him kicking and screaming and kidnapping him for 3months and displaying his antics for the rest of Africa to witness.

I think that plan if true is pure genius! Shaffie Weru is a colourful character and one of the true celebrities we have in Kenya. I for one would be glued to the screen watching the legendary womaniser represent Kenya. Why? Because that would be not only a win for Kenya in terms of entertainment but team douchebag would also be in for the win!

The thing about Shaffie Weru that would make him the ideal candidate for this role is that not only does he speak his mind, he’s also an extreme extrovert. Everything he does grabs your attention. He just has that je ne sais quoi that very few individuals seem to possess. The X factor that makes douchebags such as he and i so loveable. But not in a teddy bear cuddles and hugs and mugs of hot chocolate sort of way. Think about it, which other celebrity relationship has endured so much media scrutiny with feminists claiming Shaffie to be a waste yet he emerged from all that mess even stronger as a brand? And you can read more about the man known as Shaffie Weru here.

Camp Mulla Releases The Video To Their Peace Song “If You Believe”

This has to be the best peace song i’ve heard from the plethora of peace songs. It’s well thought out and doesn’t seem hurried. That i guess is the thing about Camp Mulla, they never put out a song unless it’s of high standards.

The video though is simple. They rap and rhyme and sing infront of Kenya’s national colours (the colours of the flag genius!). I can’t understate the fact that it’s a simple but Ed seems to love it. Except for the glow thing that goes on as the different Mulla Team members rap or sing. And one thing i didn’t know that i now do is that Mykie Tuchi has grown dreads. Good stuff.

But the reason why i like this song is because the lyrics are about the reality on the ground. They found an artistic and rather fashionable way to tell the tale of the I.D.Ps woes and the tale of one of the perpetrators of the violence. You can’t help but be impressed by the artistry this lot possess. And they found a way to relay that through their video by having the lyrics of their song run as they rape or sing.

You can’t help but be impressed by both the video -irrespective of it’s simplicity- so this one is a win for Enos Olik. Check out the video below and as a bonus you can check through the photo catalogue of the making of the video here.
