Find Out How Eat Out’s CEO Mikul Beat Capital Fm’s Susan Wong In eating Competition!

I just shared with you that Mikul Shah beat Susan lucky Wong in the build your own burger competition.

Here are the pictures. Now here is how the event went down courtesy of Tahir Carl Karmali.Read about this competition here, it happens every tuesday!

Mikul Shah, CEO of Eat Out Kenya and Entrepreneur, has added a new title to his business card – “BURGER KING” – after defeating CapitalFM’s resident foodie Susan Wong. The two of them challenged each other to see who could eat the most of Brew Bistro’s largest burger – dubbed Nairobi’s Largest Burger. After all the smack talk and jabs, Eat Out’s CEO crushed his competition by eating 350 grams more than Susan.

The competition lasted a gruelling one hour. Mikul Shah started with the bun and slowly made his way through the burger patties, while Susan went straight for the patty. At one point they both stopped to appreciate the onion rings and try to digest the burger.

“I feel like my food pipe (Oesophagus) has become my stomach”- Mikul Shah.

By the end of the competition both challengers were rendered immobile. “I can’t even sit straight!” – claimed Susan, as she pulled the plank position on a chair.

Chef Tim’s burger has yet to be conquered and has clearly defeated both Mikul and Susan. However, Mikul’s plate weighed less and thusly winning the title and bragging writes as Burger King!

Are you Man or Woman enough to take the challenge at Brew Bistro? Every Tuesday at their BYOB (Build Your Own Burger) Evenings.

Pigs in Parliament Demo Makes Headlines across the Globe

Yesterday Civil Society activists staged a never-seen-before protest in Kenyan history. The demonstrators went with pigs to parliament to protest MPs pay hike demands. The MPs want the Sh850,000 pay for the 10th Parliament reinstated because, they claim, the Sh532,000 set by the commission is too little.

The angry protesters dropped piglets outside the parliament building as part of their protest. This issue has not had the animal rights activists come out in anger over the use of the swine but ‘the pig factor’ in the demonstrations also made headlines across the globe. Take a look;

‘Pig’ & ‘Dog’ Issues Dominate Larry Asego Meeting With Neighbours

Larry Asego is back with his signature ‘pulot’ (plot) meeting and here are the minutes;

Pulot 16 committee meating.
Agenda one –Solomon’s Boliwhat, Bolingo
Agenda too – Mama Marto has contacts
Agenda thirii – Mr. Wekesa and Jimmy

Dear pulot members the meating kicked off without much further awaht, ado.

It was reported that Solomon is having issues with his Bolingo. Members sought to find out the meaning of boang’owa, bolingo. That young man who wears jean kwa magoti was given the duty to go check at simmers if Mobutu’s cousinde can define what it means. Members requested for the song bolingo na ngai to be played in contemplation. We danced for a while.

The chairman, i.e me once again, ducked and aptly put his right heel on his neck kwaack and he fainted as sudhe peed on him. Members clapped for chairmandgi. That girl of house number 9, the one with beads ya kiuno clapped in admiration and invited the chair for diner of piglet and ugali. Mrs Chairman was not happy, but chairman did not care. Kenyans Miss Out On B.E.T Nominations!

Ladies and gentlemen, it is with half a hung head that I report to you that Kenyans missed out on nomination slots for the B.E.T Awards 2013.

i say half a hung head because a Nigerian will be representing me so i can’t be too sad. I’d insert a smiley face but this isn’t a text message. Anyway, last year Camp Mulla were nominated but missed the award ceremony after some drama involving their visa. Read about that here.

Anyway, this year, the closest Kenya has gotten to nominations is through Radio and Weasel who collaborated with Amani on her recent release. Check out the track here.

Maina And King’angi In The Morning: Kenyans Overwhelmingly Support The Boniface Mwangi Led Protest “Occupy Parliament”

Today on Maina and King’ang’i In The Morning, Maina posed the following question:

This morning, we’re talking about yesterday’s protests against MPs and the manner in which the protests were conducted. ‘Occupy Parliament’ was the name of the mission.

Yes, I support the protests and I know a lot of people supported the protests against MPs adding their salaries selfishly …but were you okay with the manner in which the protests were carried out? Pigs and piglets were put at the front of Parliament buildings and they fed on blood. Did you see? …they even wrote names on the back of pigs! Halafu the large pig fell asleep at some point. The scene was such an international spectacle! So much blood and pigs!!

So, what did you think? Were the protests carried out properly? Did they do it in good taste? Did the manner in which the protests were carried out fit the purpose? Were you disgusted by the pigs and the whole scenario? Did the message reach home? How do you think the manner in which the protests were carried out was viewed by people? How did YOU view the manner in which the protests were carried out? Were you okay with the manner in which ‘Occupy Parliament’ was carried out?

Talk to me!

At first I was alarmed at the rate at which people were calling in to condemn the slaughtering of the pig which I think was symbolic and should have the MPs running scared. But then Kenyans begun to overwhelmingly support the protest and even the slaughter of the pigs.

One went as far as saying that we should have a protest every Tuesday until the greedy Mps get the hint. And then there was a lady who said that next time they should get more pigs. And actually, if I may get a word in edgewise, I want to say that i would contribute to the purchase of an extra pig for slaughter. Kenyans called in from all walks of life and speaking both Swahili (the national language) and English (the official language) and they supported the protest.

People called in and named Aden Dualle and Linturi by name and saying that they are a shame. Kenyans are clearly tired and not afraid to show it!

Radio Journalist Sang Opposes Recalling of 2 ICC Witnesses

Radio journalist Joshua Sang has opposed an application by the prosecution to recall two witnesses and add three new ones to replace those who had developed cold feet. Sang also urged the International Criminal Court (ICC) to fix the commencement of his trial in November.

Further, he asked the court to reject a request by the prosecution that he be constrained on the kind of questions to ask the case investigator whom the defence has asked he be called to testify.

The journalist made the submissions during a status conference at the ICC in The Hague, through his lawyer Katwa Kigen. The proceedings were also attended by his co-accused, Deputy President William Ruto who also addressed the Trial Chamber V.

Sang accused the prosecution of failing to keep their bargain in disclosing documents and evidence. “The prosecution is not accountable in manner of disclosure,Kigen said.

He said evidence reported from an expert witness in June 2010 had only been disclosed to them in April this year. The witness’s evidence is on what was broadcast by Sang on Kass FM ahead of the 2007 post-election violence.

Sang objected to application by the prosecution to recall two witnesses saying the prosecution had been asked to decide on their security or to withdraw them.

The lawyer said two new witnesses were to be called as substitute to others who had said they were not willing to testify on falsehoods. He warned the judges against protecting the prosecution.

Bamboo Confesses “Criminal” Past On Mambo Mseto With Willy M. Tuva!

Yesterday on Mambo Mseto, Radio Citizen’s most popular show hosted by Willy M. Tuva, Bamboo, Kenya’s hiphop veteran was hosted and the topic of the day was idle youth and how they get involved in criminal activities.

Willy M. tuva put bamboo under the spotlight and asked him whether he had ever been involved in some criminal activities in the past and Bamboo obliged -have I ever told you about just how easy going bamboo is? he’s actually pretty chill.

But back to the lecture at hand: Bamboo admitted that indeed he was once involved in some criminal activities back in America where he used to reside in California. And ay, he wasn’t a Crip or a Blood; he once went to an arcade (a place where you can play video games).

While here, Bamboo and his friends noticed that the machine was busted so they pryed the place where their quarters were deposited into in the machine and made away with every single quarter they found! Not exactly grand larceny but it will do.

From A Bartender to A Top TV Host: NTV’s Kobi Kihara’s Story (Part 2)

Kobi Kihara’s journey to stardom, part two

What did she do?
I volunteered with the Smithsonian Kaplan Institute and the Kennedy Centre, did freelance photography, but still it was a struggle and quite challenging.

“Later, I landed a temporary job with the International Organisation for Migration in the US, assisting with overseeing the Iraqi elections. There I saw the beauty of working hard and getting something out of your work. For a long time I was afraid of structure, but I was now happy to be productive, earning a salary, having benefits – the full nine yards.

She lost that job, how did she handle it?
The job came to an end after three months and Kobi found herself back at square one – job hunting, broke and disillusioned, armed with qualifications but still with no paid work forthcoming.

What made her return to Kenya?
I fell in love with Kenya again. There was a lot of scepticism and anxiety over my decision, because I had no tangible prospects to come back to and nobody could understand why I wanted to return.

How was the job hunt back?
As I had been putting out my CV and all my networks were active, Tom Mshindi contacted me while I was still in Washington about a producer position. I interviewed for it and, as I landed back in Kenya, there was an air of expectancy, as at least I would be earning. My mother was with me on this trip and we were staying with two of my sisters who were here.

Did she get the job?
I did not get the job. The disappointment was overwhelming. My mum asked me if I wanted to go back with her to Washington, but I was here to stay. I looked for a job everywhere I possibly could.

When did she get her first break?
My big break came through my photography, when a friend of mine introduced me to the management at the Windsor Golf and Country Club to do photography for their property. Then I got work with UNDP and, from there, the jobs just started coming in.

How did she land a job at citizen?
With things finally falling into place, a call from Citizen TV. I didn’t give it much thought, because I had got so used to doors being shut to me, so it was one of those ‘OK, I’ll do it’ things, but I wasn’t expecting anything to come from it.”

A month later, the station called to offer her a producer position as they were launching breakfast TV.

What is her opinion on being poached by Radio Africa?
No offence to any single individual, but the media industry in Kenya is lacking in professional structures that properly address under-appreciation, unfair compensation and poor talent recognition.

As a news anchor and studio producer at Radio Africa, I get full responsibility on the deliverables. I am part of a young and creative team, which is great. My role is to come up with programme ideas for the station, and I want to create more.

(Kobi has since moved to NTV)

What is her most memorable gig as a photographer?
Her first memorable gig was the visit of then Sen. Barrak Obama to Kenya, on this particular day he was tree planting with Nobel peace prize winner Wangari Maathai, as she was pushing and shoving with other journalists to get the best shot, the senator stopped and commended her for being a great photographer

What’s the biggest lesson she has learnt in life?
Never take yourself too seriously unless you really, really have to. The moment you do, you over-think everything and then chances of you messing it up are greater.

Adopted from Career Point

From A Bartender to A Top TV Host: NTV’s Kobi Kihara’s Story

It has not been a rosy affair for photographer, producer & TV presenter Kobi Kihara in her journey to success. She has endured so much on the way that has made here who she is today. The NTV morning show host was recently interviewed by Wangui Wachira where she divulged some fascinating facts about herself.

Here is an excerpt of the interview;

Who is Kobi Kihara?
Born 31 years ago, Kobi grew up in Kenya as the youngest of five children, one boy and four girls. Her parents were in and out of the country all the time, and when she was 15, they decided to move

from Kenya to Washington DC in the US to keep the family together. “The move had actually been in the works since I was 12, so for three years I had been preparing mentally for it, imagining what it would be like from what I had seen on TV.”

She was to attend a public high school, but the summer before she was to join, a shooting incident at the school changed her educational course and she was enrolled at a private international high school.

What was her experience like studying abroad?
“At the time, I didn’t like the high school experience because the transition was quite hard at the beginning. It was a huge opportunity for the entire family, but once we got there it was so different and foreign. Looking back, however, I realise it was fantastic to be in an international setting. I was the only Kenyan and I had friends from different parts of the world.

How did her family react to her suggestion of studying arts?

I told my parents that I wanted to study the performing arts and to be an actress. To a family of overachievers, it was one of those ‘Huh?’ moments.

“To make them understand what the programme was about, I broke down the details of the course to my parents. It helped that there is a creative streak running through my mum’s side of the family so, with their blessing, I was soon off to Newcastle University in the UK.

When did she begin photography?

After a year and a half, she returned to Newcastle to complete her degree. However, her graduation day coincided with her sister’s wedding back in Kenya, so she missed out on the ceremony and came home to share in the celebrations.

“I had just started getting interested in photography and had always wanted to work with children, so during this period I volunteered at Nyumbani Children’s Home before going back to Washington.

What happened after that?
I took some time off when I had finished my studies, to figure things out.”
This time off saw Kobi actively job hunting. She was able to land acting roles in three small films, two shot in the US and one in the UK.
That is when I decided I wanted to be behind the scenes; to have control and have a say about what was going on in front of the camera. When you are only in front of it, your opinion doesn’t count.

What kind of jobs was she doing to make ends meet?
The time off also took her to Paris, France, for three months, where she modelled briefly and did some photography.

When she got back, she took on a part-time bartending gig.

How did that work?
My sister talked to me about following through with my photography, so I enrolled at a nearby school for some courses. I would attend these in the morning and bartend in the evening. In 2004, I went back to school full time in Toronto to do my master’s in film and TV production. At graduation, everyone I had been studying with was working – apart from me. I just couldn’t find permanent employment.

HERE’s the second part of the interview.

Animal Rights Activists Come Out In Anger Over The Boniface Mwangi Protest: Occupy Parliament

Yesterday, Boniface Mwangi led a protest dubbed Occupy Parliament which was demonstrating against the scheme our Members of Parliament have hatched to increase their remunerations. Read about that protest here.

During the protest, a pig was slaughtered. This was to add dramatic if not shock effect to the protest and it was a resounding success if that was the aim… Actually, the protest may have unwittingly become a victim of it’s own success: animal rights activists came out from every nook and cranny to decry the treatment of the pigs.

From social media; Facebook and Twitter the self appointed animal rights activists begun beating their drums claiming that the animals weren’t humanely treated -oh the irony and hypocrisy of that statement.

And this morning, Maina and King’ang’i are discussing the manner in which the pigs were treated and slaughtered and alot of the callers are appalled. Tune in to the show to hear the various opinions on the same.

Breaking News: DPP Takes Over The Dog P0rn Scandal Case

Earlier, it was reported that Christopher Weissenrieder and the group of girls alleged to have been taking part in dog p0rn0graphy were not going to be charged with bestiality when they were arraigned before a Mombasa Law Court Tuesday morning.

The Mombasa court even released the girls on a KSh100,000 bond each while Chris was released on a Ksh1 million bond and their case set to be heard in July. However, the Director of Public Prosecution has taken up the case and is said to have added the charge of “Unnatural act with a dog.”

The girls when they were arraigned in court

Announcing this new development, blogger/journalist Dennis Itumbi lauded the DPP on the move. Earlier, there was discomfort among Kenyans who aired their grievances via social media after it became apparent that both Chris and the girls were not going to face bestiality charges.

Rising Teenage Gospel Star Releases Dedication To His Late Mum!

I said it once and I stand by my words, this artist is one of the best we have and is gonna take this industry by storm. Who am I talking about? Nineteen year old Bahati!

Raised as an orphan at ABC children’s home, Bahati grew up without the love of a mother so to speak. You see, he lost his mum at a very tender age, and was robbed of one of the treasures of life.

He however did not let those obstacles hold him down, he surmounted them to become the musician you see today. His latest release comes hot in the heels of another duet he did with fellow gospel star Mr Seed. That duet is titled wangu, listen to it here. Mama is done is lilting swahili and bongo flavour genre si a dedication to his mum for all the virtues she imparted in him.

Those vitures he sings, have been the anchor that hold him down. Listen to the song below, produced by Rkay. The video was shot by Tony Tiger. This song was released on mothers day and was on heavy rotation the whole day. Read about another artist. who released another mothers’ day dedication to his late mum here.

Behind The Scene Pictures From Sauti Sol’s Still The One Video Shoot!

Sauti Sol will be releasing their much awaited video soon I came across pictures from the shoot. The video director is none other than Enos Olik!

The pictures are from both Eye-con photography and Annabel Onyango’s dressupnation blog. Annabel Onyango is also one of the brains behind this amazing video about a haunted house. If you missed my article on Sauti Sol’s still the one, read that here.

Meet Ajegele The Somali Pirate! (Animation)

This video is so hilarious, forget the stereotypes that it might be accused of perpetuating!

Meet Ajegele, the Somali pirate lamenting the fact that it has become difficult to surive! He goes on and on mentioning all the problems that they are facing thanks to KDF! The most meorable line for me is when he says “naomba serikali waongeze tanki kwa ngamia..” Very funny stuff!

Watch the video below, may be Buni Tv should pick this series up. Just a random thought! The animation is by Black Russia Animation, the episode is called sirikali ya wariah!

GHAFLA POLL: Kenyans, Is The Government Right In Dropping The Bestiality Charges Against The Dog P0rn Gang?

The courts have announced that a plea bargain has been reached between itself and the 12 persons originally meant to be charged with bestiality in mombasa. Read more details on that here.

But my question is, in line with Boniface Mwangi letting MPs know how kenyans feel about their attempt to increase their salaries, do you agree with the court’s decision to charge the 12 with a lesser offence of prostitution (for the lasses) and living off the proceeds of prostitution (pimping for Chris).

So kenyans, have your say. Should the charges be dropped?

When Fashion Meets Film: A Haunted Tale Of A Trapped Soul Seeking Freedom!

Ever watched a horror flick, where you are afraid that something will go horribly wrong but for some reasong you can’t move a muscle!

That’s the feeling I got as I watched this video. The background music breathed life to my fears, with every note I kept waiting for a ghost to pop out of somewhere, drown Namunyak and vanish into thin air! Well the video’s description does a better job that I could. Read it below.

gecko productions

Set in a site haunted by bad luck where those trying to settle often end up losing all hope, a lonely traveler is sucked into the shell of a failed dream only to find out that the building acts like a cage trapping souls to be its company though time, towards its inevitable decay. Inside another soul is hidden, waiting to pass the curse to someone else and to be set free.

Director of Photography: Jakub Zahradnicek, Producer: Annabel Onyango, Creative Director: Asa Isacson, Models: Namnyak Charity Odupoy, Ndelela Nancy Pappas, Fashion Designers: NAMNYAK, KATUNGULU MWENDWA, KAPOETA feathered accessories, Styling: Fashion Media Consultant Annabel Onyango, Designer/model Namnyak Charity Odupoy, Music: Saraswa. Police Brutality: Robert Alai Beaten By Police!

Say what you will about Robert Alai, the one thing that remains when all is said and done is that he has a spine and nads of steel. He fears nothing and no one and he says what pleases him. Granted, sometimes he gets his facts horribly wrong -and sometimes that is an intentional mistake but that being said, he stands for what he believes in.

Anyway, the blogger decided to participate in the protest organized by Boniface Mwangi to refute MPs demand for a salary increment. And then the police landed on him with their bludgeons.

Check out how he broke the news below:

Robert Alai Onyango
I have been assaulted by Policemen near parliament. Not the best wat to run a country.

Bloody And Gory Images From Boniface Mwangi Led Protest: Occupy Parliament!

Boniface Mwangi is a brave man. I’ve have always said that this is a quality in him that I really admire. Then again, so are all the other protesters fighting the move by Kenyan Members of Parliament to increase their salaries.

They are truly brave. and as was written in the Aeneid, “Fortune favours the bold!”. But this is just something I cannot understand. The pigs that were taken to parliament and all the blood they have used for shock value. Check out the pictures below:

The fat pig has been christened Linturi

Celibate Kenzo Tweets About ‘Future Boyfriend’!

Kenzo is not new to drama, he was the subject of much debate the day he let all and sundry know that he was done dishing out the D!

Or so we thought…play along. Yesterday, ‘he’ posted a rather ‘revealing’ tweet. In short, everybody thought Kenzo had come out of the closet, infact burst out like Maya Angelou’s caged bird! Sema ndrama sema vindio! See that ‘gay’ tweet below.

KENZOS TWEET

Well not one to take things at face value, I called him up concerning this ‘controversy’. He laughed uncontrollably then said this. “You of all people know celebs don’t handle their own social media, we are busy people. My social media manager is a lady and once in a while she will post or retweet things that she feels my fans will relate to. Sometimes however, that can go awry, as it did yesterday. I am not cross though, and I did not feel the need to clear the air. Kenyans on twitter love scandals, and my clearing up the air would have excerbated the situation.” He said it’s cray how people blew up his phone. Sexuality is clearly a big deal in Nairobi!

Kenzo Clarifies His No Sex Stance Yet Again

So yes, I just had to add fuel to the fire with that sensational headline. Kenyans are drawn to drama like steel to magnets! This time however, sorry to burst your bubble, Kenzo is celibate and a teetotaller, he is NOT batting for team Adam. Yes Eves and Yvettes, Milkas and Marjories, Kenzo is as straight as an arrow. As you were people, as you were. Read more Kenzo controversies here.
