Fear is a terrible thing. It rules much of our lives, and it delights the adversary. Sometimes, it makes us question ourselves whether we have the strength to handle as much rejection as we might be asking for. And because she overcame her fears, Citizen TV’s news anchor has become one of the biggest TV anchors in Kenya.
Recently, Kirigo spoke to Charles Kevin Kamau of CKK Magazine where she opened up about her weight as the main impediment to getting on the screens. According to her, she was not this ‘slim bady gyal’ who appealed to the viewer. This and more, she reveals below;
Tell us about yourself:
I am a young lady who was born and brought up in Nairobi. I am highly blessed and favored by The Almighty. I am a Capricorn and I live up to the traits of a Capricorn. I am a News Anchor with Citizen TV and believe it or not, I rarely wear heels outside the studio. And chances are you will never find me wearing a suit outside the studio. I am really passionate about the youth and in my free time you can find me coming up with ideas that I hope to share one day that will see the youth become confident, enterprising and passionate about what they want to do.
Share with us a brief history of what you do:
I am a News Anchor so that means my main job is to deliver the news that has been compiled, scripted and edited by my colleagues. I also do reporting but I do feature reporting. Over the years I have dealt with matters lifestyle, health and family law and soon coming up with a brilliant new segment that I hope will change many people’s lives.
What is your source of inspiration in all you do:
I think the fact that I get a chance to see a new day is my main source of inspiration. I get a chance to share my thoughts, ideas and dreams with those around me with the hope that they get inspired and in a way that keeps me going. My family is also a big inspiration and their challenges towards me inspire me to do it better.
Most people have fears in life especially on the onward march to success. What fears have you overcome with time:
Wow… I feared what my viewers would think or say of me for a long time. I am not a “slim baddy gyal” ( like Eve D’Souza 😉 ) and so that was kind of tough accepting but with time, I have become very comfortable in my skin. I do have those days I wake up and I feel so fat but I usually get over it. I feared failure. I feared it because it is not something I ever wanted to be associated with. But I have failed a few times here and there, thing is I now know how to handle it. Now I embrace that feeling when it overcomes me.
What do you think defines a person?
Their thoughts, their actions, their words….think about it
Many young people find themselves stuck in the maze of life, especially as they try to gain identity. What advise can you give to them?
At the back of your head, always have a clear picture of who you are and what you want; the rest really falls into place. It is up to you to decide what you want your identity is about. The minute you decide to copy another’s identity, you are preparing for your downfall.
What 3 things are crucial for anyone to embrace for them to remain on the path of success?
Confidence, Humility and Mentorship; that to me is what you need to remain on the path of success
Opportunities are all over especially for the youths. How can young people tap the opportunities?
Network…Network…Because I know what I want and who I want to attract, I never shy away from speaking to people I admire. The law of attraction really. You want something, attract it. Keep positive vibes flowing as you go on about your daily duties. Of course make a point of reading a book every month. Books open up our minds to new possibilities and are good conversation starters. Trust me. Finally, believe in yourself.
On a lighter note, tell us something most people don’t know about you?
I love sleeping. You can’t take that away from me. Thing is, I can only sleep on a bed. Never the couch. I also read a lot. I buy a book or two every month.
Your parting shot?
Don’t take life too seriously…You might miss the bus to heaven… And always start your day with a smile…
