Pay TV company, StarTimes Media, has introduced an additional 6 channels of diverse genres available to its subscribers across Kenya in a move aimed at further boosting its exclusive information and entertainment offering.

The exclusive channels namely NBA TV, Fine Living Network, Setanta Action, WAP TV, Triple P and Jim Jam will be accessible on Classic, Unique and Unique Plus bouquets which attract a monthly subscription rate of Ksh 999 to 2,499.

Speaking on this latest development, StarTimes CEO Mr. Leo Lee noted the brand’s commitment to progressively enrich the content available to its subscribers while still maintaining the cost of existing bouquets as it seeks to add its competitive edge and further entrench itself as the preferred Pay Television service provider.

NBA TV will air live matches from the NBA and WNBA everyday of the season featuring the top 30 basketball teams on earth as they compete for the ultimate title.

I have to say that sometimes, just sometimes, I see things on twitter that i honestly find hilarious. And this is one of those times. But first, the back story.

As my uncle once asked, how can you have taste when you’re broke? Anyway, I have gone out with Joe Muchiri, one of Twitters bigwigs and he is the complete opposite, he doesn’t acquire tastes when he hears you’ll be paying.

Leo Faya is an ex-capital FM presenter who has grown a reputation for creating interesting websites.

I remember when he created Walevi.com, one of the original Kenyan social sites, from way back before Facebook became the sh*t and the urine. He was also the man behind Getmziki.com, and more recently, he started a web series called the 10 Minute Fix, which was a discussion programme for Kenyans in the diaspora to talk about their identity crises.

I personally loved the 10 Minute Fix and have watched each and every episode of it. I was very intrigued by the way these guys seemed to be balling out of control, despite the many stories we hear of diasporans washing old wazungu’s buttocks. However, now it’s been a long time since Leo came up with some new internet idea, but

I have recently come across this preview of Leo Faya’s latest project: a show called “Passport.” Passport looks like it’s going to be a show about the budding basketball scene in Kenya. Remember back in the 90s when basketball used to be the in thing, till wearing basketball jerseys and track suits was the fashion?

Well “Passport” is for all of us Kenyan basketball fans who grew up in that generation, as well as the young cats out there right now who like basketball, but couldn’t be bothered to wake up at 3am to catch NBA Live. Sheila Kwamboka is gonna be co-hosting the show with Leo, where they will get to tour Africa, taking a peek around the most active basketball courts and exposing local talent to a bigger audience. In the words of the creators themselves, “Africans share a universal access to diverse audiences through sports. We want to talk to players and organizers of the game, learning the impact and growth of basketball in Africa.”

Tuesday, Machakos Governor, Dr. Alfred Mutua, unveiled the county’s “Holywood” – MachaWood – which we expect will generate over 30,000 jobs and 500 Million Kenya Shillings to Machakos County in the next one year.

Since its inception, Tahidi High has left a mark on Kenyan TV as the leading show that truly depicts High School life. While you all love the show, most of you know about Denis Mugo (OJ), Sarah Hassan (Tanya) and Abel Mutua (Freddy) as the pioneers of the award winning show.

Shock on you! There was another cast before the OJ’s and Tanya’s. Unknown to many, this is the original Tahidi High cast. The group had its very first shoot in Savanna as they awaited for confirmation from Nairobi Academy (the current location for Tahidi High) if they could shoot from there.

If you’re one of those people who love candy or has a young one who does then you must have come across the “Ben 10” brand of chewing gum. Now here’s the shocker. Kenya’s leading manufacturing conglomerate, Kenafric has been sued by United States TV giant, Time Warner on Copyright infringement of its cartoon trademark product, BEN 10.

BEN 10 is a popular American cartoon franchise created by Cartoon Networks and “Man of Action”. With three Emmys under its belt, the cartoon has grossed over $22 billion in sales in Europe, the Middle East and Africa.

Cartoon Networks Inc., the TV unit of Time Warner wants the Kenyan conglomerate to stop the production of its chewing gum with BEN 10 branded wrapping paper.

According to Business Daily, Cartoon Network alleged that the association of Kenafric’s chewing gum with its brand can damage the reputation of BEN 10 and goods branded with the label toys, video games and clothing which has been developed over the years through promotions and advertising.

It also claimed that Kenafric has been using its popularity to grow its business and fortune without prior permission of using it trademark.

“The defendant’s (Kenafric) use of the name of BEN 10 amounts to trade mark infringement of BEN 10 Trade Marks. The unauthorized reproduction or adaptation or publication or broadcast or sales or distribution or possession or importation of the offending chewing gum constitutes copyright infringement,” Cartoon Networks vice president, Louise Sams says in a document filed at the Milimani Commercial court.

Sams says both company use the same communication channel for distribution and this could easily lead to association of the Kenafric chewing gum with its cartoon. Therefore, having registered BEN 10 as a trademark in the US, Warner says the product is protected in Kenya too.
