Machakos Governor Dr. Alfred Mutua launched The Machakos Entertainment Center for Film, Media, Music and the Arts dubbed ‘MachaWood’ in October last year.

The Machakos Entertainment Center for Film, Media, Music and the Arts was established to make Machakos County the premier location for entertainment in Africa. It hoped to promote and attract filmmakers, musicians, artists and media so as to grow the industry .

Well today we get to have a look at its first movie:

Yesterday, Wolf of Wall street was banned by The Kenya Film Classification Board ,turns out it’s not the only banned movie in Kenya. While movies such as The White Maasai roam around wild and free despite the fact that they are a total disgrace tour country, others are outlawed such as the ones I will list below.

Before i begin with the list,lets see what  leads to a film being outlawed?If a film “tends to prejudice the maintenance of public order or offend decency, or the public exhibition or display of which would in its opinion for any other reason be undesirable in the public interest. ” the board has the mandate to restrict the distribution of a film. This is according to Section 16(4) of the Films and Stage Play Act

1# Wolf on Wall Street

Based on a memoir by the stockbroker Jordan Belfort, who founded the investment firm Stratton Oakmont in a Long Island garage and spent much of the Nineties gaining fortune through dishonest ways. The film follows Belfort’s fast rise to the top, the drugs,569 variations of the F-word and the unending supply of girls. The film has been accused of glamorizing his crimes, ignoring his victims and failing to satisfy the audience’s need to see justice served.

Malaysia and Nepal have banned the film while some scenes have been cut in the India and Lebanon versions .In Singapore, Wolf will be viewed in a handful of theaters because of “its ultra-restrictive rating.” (The Hollywood Reporter)

2# Otto the Blood Bath

The first Kenyan Horror film that was banned in 2008 by the Kenyan Censorship Board as it was too horrific for even a grown up. It had too much blood and dead bodies. Five years on, the ban is yet to be lifted

3# Makanisa Yanayo Abudiwa Ibilisi

The sale distribution and exhibition of the film was forbidden claiming that the film associated several churches in Kenya with devil worship. The board said the film referred to ten churches to as anti-Christ churches. KFCB regional head Bonaventure Kioko said the film mentioned churches in Nairobi, Mombasa, Kisumu and others around the world as being part of the Freemasons.

4# Movie 43

It was banned as it was deemed as “overly graphic” and contained excessive elements of sex and nudity’ KFCB corporate communication officer Eva Mbuni told The Nairobian that “We are applying the law to protect children and youth. They have young, gullible minds that need to make informed choices. Content which promotes sex, nudity, use of alcohol and drugs needs to be discouraged,”

The movie starred famous stars such as Halle Berry, Gerard Butler, Anna Faris and Hugh Jackman. Making the movie took approximately a decade as many production companies rejected the controversial script

5#Paradise: Love

The third part in a Trilogy that followed the adventures of three female characters .The Trilogy is  made up of Faith Hope and Love, all three movies have been described by The Independent as “so excruciating that you can barely look”

The movie Paradise Love: is set in Kenya where middle-aged Teresa visits the country for holiday. She is not interested in the sandy beaches but wants to get down and dirty with the young beach boys and maybe find love in the process. She then hooks up with Munga (Peter Kazungu) and offsets a torrid affair. But things get rocky when he starts asking for money as per the usual “beach boys” “sugar mama” relations. In summary Love focuses on Euro-African trade in a super gross way.I would not recommend this movie.Somethings cannot be unseen.

6# Till the End of Time

According to Wikipedia the movie is a 1946 drama film directed by Edward Dmytryk and starring Dorothy McGuire, Guy Madison, Robert Mitchum, and Bill Williams. Released the same year as the better known The Best Years of Our Lives, it covers much the same topic: the adjustment of World War II veterans to civilian life. It was based on the novel They Dream of Home by Niven Busch. Unlike the soldier, sailor and airman of The Best Years of Our Lives, the male leads in this film are all U.S. Marines.

Vera Sidika is back from her extended holiday in Dubai and she came back with gifts for everyone -in her family. But that is neither here nor there. What is important is that she decided to celebrate her mother and I have a photo of Vera’s mother whom I have to admit is aging very gracefully.

Categories of copyright works to be registered:

The Kenya Copyright Board registers copyright works under the following categories;

    1.Musical
    2.Audio Visual
    3.Literary
    4.Artistic
    5.Sound Recording

Requirements for Registration:

Original musical, literary, artistic, audio visual works, sound recordings and broadcasts shall be eligible for copyright protection.Procedure for Registration of Copyright Works:

To be accepted for registration,

   1.The work must be of original authorship. Originality in the Copyright sense means that the work must not have copied from somebody else.
    2.Application shall be a prescribed form obtained from the Copyright Office or downloaded from the Kenya Copyright Board Website
   3.The applicant will attach two soft copies of the works, where applicable with the application
   4.The work must be in a tangible form including digital form for example VCD,CD,DVCD, books, Music cassettes
    5.A duly completed application form, fully filled, must be witnessed by a commissioner for oaths and accompanied by the required fees.

The following particulars shall also be required:-

    (a) Applicant Details
   (b) Copyright Work Details
   (c) Authorship/Artist Details.
    (d) Production/Publication Details.

Any such person purporting to register a work as an authorized agent, he/she shall be required to produce an authority letter authorizing him/her to act as such agent and a copy of his/her National ID.

On receipt of the application, the office may, after making such enquiry as it may deem fit, enter the particulars of the work in a Copyright Register.

The Copyright Office will then issue a certificate of registration within 7 days from the date of registration.

I recently came across a story about Geral Langiri being stranded in Mtito Andei while on his way toi Mombasa and all this was allegedly occasioned by pure negligence. Well, what allegedly happened was that he was on a Modern Coast bus in transit to Mombasa but the bus was stopped at Imani and the driver refused to leave citing police harrassment at Athi River.

So Alexander Konstantaras and I leave Nairobi for Mombasa at 10:30am using Modern Coast bus. We get to Imara at 10:45am. Thinking its one of those kawaida stops before the journey starts, we get out to buy a snack or two and head back to the bus with the rest of the passengers.The bus doesnt leave. An hour later,we are still at the same spot.Asking the driver and turn boy why,we are told there is a police operation going on at Athi River and buses are being stopped and harrased by the cops. 3 hours later,we are still at the total petrol station at Imara meanwhile the driver is telling us that they are waiting on their bosses to make “arrangements”.At 2pm we are finally told to board the bus and we are proceeding.As I write this,I am on a bed in some guest house in mtito Andei where we reached at 6pm for the usual stop,only to be told at 7pm that we cant continue with our journey to mombasa because of the night travel ban and we have to sort ourselves out till 5am when the journey will continue..I really want someone to blame and be angry at but i dont know who? Is it Muthutho and his night ban laws or Modern Coast bus for not sorting out their issues?

 When I spoke to a Modern Coast representative, she informed me that she was unable to comment about the same as nothing untoward had been reported to them.

 Yesterday ,the little known Kenya Film Classification Board announced on their  facebook page that Golden Globe /Oscar Nominated movie Wolf of Wallstreet had been banned.

Their reason for banning the movie was that

“There is a LIMIT to everything and we believe the Kenyan public deserves better. WOLF OF WALLSTREET has been RESTRICTED. The film is NOT for sale, exhibition or distribution in KENYA. Violators shall be PROSECUTED.”

Of course Kenyans were not too pleased with this and spilled their pure,unadulterated hate on the Board:

Michelle Morgan is one of the most beautiful ladies that has ever graced Kenyan TV. She was a site for sore eyes on Citizen TV during the airing of news. Unfortunately, she will no longer be a feature and Willis Raburu is one of the Royal Media Services employees who threw her a small poarty to say “Kwaheri”.

She leaves Citizen TV barely 2yrs after joining the team but she does so to further her career. She is reportedly going to join Ebru TV, an affiliate of Everest TV. Ebru TV is a Turkish media house set to launch in Kenya.

But one thing that my source has intimated is that Ms. Morgan left Citizen Tv in good terms without any strianied relations. We wish her nothing but success.

Hapa Kule, a parody news show that airs on KTN and is unbelievably hilarious! They approach satire and parodies from an angle and language Kenyans can understand -sheng. They also troll things the ordinary Kenyans can relate to other than politics.
