Maina And King’ang’i In The Morning: As A Wife, How Do You Discipline Your Husband?

Maina and King’ang’i seem to have riled the menfolk up quite a bit this morning with their morning conversation. The pair asked women to explain just how they disciplined their husbands when they step out of line. The notion it would seem that wives too “discipline” their spouses seems purely preposterous perhaps but it seems they do indeed.

This is what Maina Kageni asked today:

And the responses were thick and fast. Men called in to say that women are manipulative and blah blah blah but when you think about how weak the Kenyan man has allowed himself to become, it is hard not to see why women resort to these tactics.

And then there is the fact that from what I hear on Maina and King’ang’i In The Morning, I believe that alot of Kenyan men get married simply to replace their mothers with their wives.

The female callers related their experiences manipulating their husbands and sometimes even outrightly neglecting them for perceived transgressions but the way I see it, if you were happy marrying a boy in a man’s body, you shouldn’t complain when the time comes for you to play nanny…goat!

Anyway, tune in and have your say in what is turning out to b e a riveting debate!

Get a Sneak Peek of Mother-in-Law’s Curvaceous Celina on Set the TV Show (PHOTOS)

Beautiful and flirtatious Catherine Kamau plays this rude, short-tempered, arrogant and impolite character, Celina Mitego, who bluntly tells off her badgering mother-in-law and jeers at her pliable sister-in-law.

Having fallen in ‘love’ with her husband, Charlie Mwamba, because of money she now bears the brunt of having to put with his drankardness. In a nutshell, Celina is Jezebel in flesh.

However, in real life, Cate, as she’s popularly referred to, is a delectable lady whose charm is ensnaring.

We recently caught her on-set Mother-in-Law and she seems easy than she actually is in the TV show. Take a look;

KOT:From Kenya’s Favorite To A Celebrity’s Worst Nightmare

A while back Kenyans on Twitter commonly referred to as KOT were the apple of Kenya’s eyes. This is because KOT had become the voice of the people the local Mwananchi.

They ‘disciplined’ errant politicians, preached peace during the elections and started food drives for the hungry. One of their greatest achievements so far was making ‘CNN know their place’ in society. This was after the conglomerate published a wildly erroneous story about an unidentified militia group preparing to cause pandemonium in the Rift Valley region before the election period. As if that was not enough, The Media house had also announced an erroneous not forgetting an alarming story that violence had erupted in Kenya.

Photo Tech Moran

Following this two stories, KOT launched a campaign under the hashtag SomeoneTellCNN to show their displeasure which was followed by demanding an apology from the media house. The Kenyan representative then issued an apology to Kenyans following the incidence.

McKenzie #CNNApologise: Kenyans on Twitter Force CNN to Pull Offending Video

Photo Tech Moran

About an  year later KOT is a sad dark shadow of its former self. They have evolved from being the good guys to being Cyber Bullies, a celebrity’s worst night mare. Take for Example Linda Nyangweso who was bullied over her weight with KOT completely disregarding her feelings. There was also the Miss Kenya and Miss Tourism Kakamega who were viciously trolled for not being “pretty enough”

In my opinion, KOT should just quit these cowardly acts of Cyber Bullying, its one thing when you are expressing your opinion it’s a whole different story when your opinion embarrasses or belittles someone. Do not be fooled by the facade, even celebrities have feelings, they are humans too!

Let us go back to being the voice of the Mwanachi, and do great thing for our country. Like for example, people in Turkana are suffering from starvation, we can all come together and pitch ideas to avoid such situations. To conclude this article I will leave you with a quotable quote from one Taylor Swift

“Words can break someone into a million pieces, but they can also put them back together. I hope you use yours for good, because the only words you’ll regret more than the ones left unsaid are the ones you use to intentionally hurt someone.”

Meet the 22 Year Old Artiste who did a 2.5 Million Video (PHOTOS)

He may be young be he’s got big things poppin’. Barely a week ago he, alongside Jimmy Gait, released a video said to cost somewhere in the region of 2.5 million. For the better part of last week, the video became the talk of town as it elicited mixed reactions.

However, all the racket aside, Papa Dennis (real name Dennis Mwangi) reveals that he was actually handed a heftier budget but couldn’t exhaust it. Sponsored by Maliza Umaskini and Make It or Make It, he was given a $42,400 budget but couldn’t expend all it so it was carried over to his next project.

An orphan, Papa Dennis comes from Matunda in Likuyani District (former Lugari District). However, that didn’t deter him from achieving his goals in life. After his KCPE he couldn’t continue with school due to lack of fees so he opted to do menial work to fend for his family.

It’s during Maliza Umaskini Soccer Tournment that he was discovered after staged one of the best performances other than Ero Mutu’s. Maliza Umaskini CEO, Sadat Muhindi, took both of them under his wings alongside eight others.

Together with Ero Mutu they did 3 tracks together and after that they decided to pursue their solo careers.

Papa Dennis released his first single, Ameshinda Vita, in 2011 then the second came in 2012 and now Makekes with Jimmy Gait.

He’s currently assembling his band as well as putting up a recording studio expected to be ready by April so that he can do his music in-house. He also has more than 3 international videos coming up this year.

If this one cost 2.5mili then maybe, just maybe, we should expect bigger things from him in the not-so-far future.

Here’s his video with Jimmy Gait;

Victoria Kimani Set To Define The African Perception Of Kenyan Beauty As She Cameos In One Of the Biggest Songs Out (VIDEO)

Victoria Kimani is on a very short list of Kenyan artists making splashes on the continental scene and be that via her music or her beauty, the fact remains unchanged that she is one of the biggest Kenyans -speaking strictly African impact.

I was recently enjoying a collaborative track from two of my favourite omo Naija artists, Igbo rapper Lynxx and crooner Bank W when I saw her in a video. The moments in between her cameos are fleeting but seeing as Baba Ghafla hooked up some sweet internet, I can forward and rewind the video whenever the urge tickles my fancy.

Anyway, in the track titled African Bad girl, she is used to represent the East African version of beauty. What do you think? Is she the best representative of Kenyan and indeed East African beauty? And don’t try to earn brownie points on my account by saying your girlfriend is hotter because nephew, Uncle Chim Tuna has seen her and I do not concur!

Open Letter to Deejays (A Must Read if you’re a DJ)

Deejays are the only persons (other than of course God) that can make or break your night out; probably why Indeep sang, “Last night, the deejay saved my life”. Anyhow, DJ Lenium, has penned a very earnest letter to fellow Kenyan DJs.

He says;

Why DJs Shouldn’t Play For Free (And What To Do Instead)

It’s hard work becoming a professional DJ. By professional I mean a DJ who gets paid for the work they do. Whether it’s $50 or $500 for your set time and whether it’s for a crowd of 30 or 3,000; if this is you, you should consider yourself a professional DJ. And to all my fellow professionals, and especially for those readers who are aspiring to become professional DJs, I ask you all to consider never “paying-to-play”, or (more commonly) playing for free just for the sake of “exposure”, when you are asked to DJ for a promoter or venue who is making money from your audience.

DJ_Lenium.jpg

DJ Lenium

Why playing for free is understandable… but wrong

My point revolves around aspiring professional DJs who are trying to break into their scenes, and who simply aren’t aware that by not asking to be paid in cash, they will inadvertently devalue the hard work that all professional DJs do, both novice and pro. It is completely understandable that eager, inexperienced DJs want exposure, and that digital DJing tools and digital music files have made the scarcity and financial barriers to DJing all but disappear – something that I think is great.

However there is a real, factual, elephant in the room here, and that is: Supply and demand. With so many digital DJs now pining for the opportunity to perform for a dancefloor / audience, it makes sense that venues, being the businesses that they are, ask for the most value and quality from the person who is willing to work for the least amount of money. This is standard business practice across the free-market world, right?

DJ_1.jpg

I have first-hand experience of the results of this. About four years ago I began to experience club managers attempting to renegotiate my fees. When I wouldn’t agree to absurd new rates, they reduced my hours to just take a prime slot, having other DJs playing before and after me. I asked why and management told me it was in an attempt to save money and continue justifying not charging a cover. I was curious as to why hiring other DJs instead of me saved the club money, so I asked the eager new DJs whether they were being paid. Yes, they said, they definitely were – in drink tickets!

But the thing, is DJing is hard work. I know that, and so do you. Sure, it’s absolutely invigorating work – but it’s still work. So is professional painting, drumming, dancing, or acting, where you try to master your craft in order to entertain others. I think we all should think about DJing as “work”, when you play a set in a club to entertain a crowd, for the purpose of generating business for the promoters or venue who hired you. You may be doing what you love, but your audience’s money is changing hands behind your back, and you are a major part of what is fuelling the spending at the venue you’re spinning for.

Some may argue that playing for free in a clubs is similar to unpaid internships. This may be true, but I believe unpaid internships are shady to begin with – again, if you are producing something that makes the company money. There have been major lawsuits over this issue. Couldn’t the same be said for a promoter or venue in which DJs play, when money is indirectly made off their backs?

Why we should cooperate, not compete

Here is the crucial part, and what has lead me to write this: Yes, we all may have our own styles of DJing. Sure, we may be competing for gigs at the same venues in our own cities, towns or villages. But in the end, we all are responsible for making sure that as professional DJs (not famous superstar DJs, just DJs who want to make a modest living from their art/craft), we look out for ourselves and our DJ community.

Sometimes we compete, but sometimes we help each other out too! I have landed many gigs due to recommendations from other DJs. Sometimes it’s a cooperative, not just competitive business. So, when we don’t bargain together for what’s fair, then the lowest bid among us gets the job. It is simple economics, and not a matter of what is ethically correct. If I own a venue and want to make money, I will hire the DJ who has the lowest rate (assuming the DJs I am choosing between can all carry a dance floor and/or keep the bar full, of course).

dj_5.jpg

As DJs we are all competing for a limited amount of spaces and time slots at venues, but I truly believe all of us have a responsibility to all our DJ colleagues in our community / scene. This responsibility is to keep our craft valuable. The price of something only stays as high as it does because people are willing to pay for it. If some DJs are willing to play for nothing, it hurts your larger DJ community. This is because it devalues the art form.

If the social norm is “these newbie DJs can play for free until they earn to be paid by bringing heads through the door”, then the creative work what we do is only as good as how many people are in attendance to spend money. Well then, maybe DJs should get paid in accordance to how much the venue makes? I am not sure that this is the answer but at least it makes more sense than just accepting exposure as compensation.

So what should you do instead to get booked?

So how does the aspiring professional DJ stay motivated and get gigs if he or she doesn’t offer to play for free? The saying “in order to get the job you need experience, but you need experience to get the job” is true, but in our craft, we have unique opportunities to make our own experience.

When I started out, I couldn’t get a gig in a club or bar/lounge in Miami. In order to gain experience and exposure I would throw impromptu dance events which were free, and provided a space for people to dance and have a good time, all while I DJed the party.

I did this a few times until I took the party onto public transportation which got the attention of a few promoters who then ended up asking me to partner with them on a weekly party at a small club. I hustled from there – but I never undercut another working DJ, and I never will. I may not know you, but I respect what you do. It’s hard work!

It’s hard, but this is the alternative…

This can all be hard for a DJ without much professional experience. It can be intimidating to negotiate and it’s much easier to offer your services for free and see if the venue thinks you have what it takes. I believe most of us become principled later in our careers. But just remember that your actions now could set precedents for later which may forever cause the regular-gigging professional DJ not to be paid a living wage.

dj_decks_1.jpg

There are so many of us digital DJs that venue managers and promoters have the luxury to keep charging little or nothing for inexperienced – but promising – young DJs, and forcing many veterans to reconsider DJing as a full-time gig. This practice might eventually turn these gigs into “DJ mills”. As soon as another young promising DJ talent comes along offering to play for free (assuming you’ve started to get paid), you may be out of a fee. But as I’ve repeatedly said, this job is hard work, and still worth much more than exposure alone. I do hope it doesn’t one day become completely devalued. I suppose the choice is ours, as DJs, to make.

Kenyans Finally Come Up With A Witty Comedy Show Devoid Of Tribal Shenanigans

My colleague and friend Adam was the first to pick up on this show. That was back in 2012 when the show was still a concept. The show finally took off and is here. Finally, a show that will be devoid of tribal shenanigans and stupid ethnic stereotypes about Luhyas, Kikuyus et al. finally, a show I can watch without feeling my intellectual quotient reduce. Drastically.

the show is based on an NGO that receives funding from the head office in the U.K and the odd ball characters that make up it’s staff. The show explores yet uncharted facets of Kenyan culture in a subtle and witty way that manages to deliver on the LOLs without being slapstick.

That said and done, allow me to share the trailer with you so you can better acquaint yourselves with the concept of what intellectual LOLs are all about -without being snobbish:

After his Injury That Nearly Left Him Paralyzed, Jimwat Finally Walking Again! (PHOTO)

Jimwat was involved in a harrowing accident that threatened the lad’s motor skills permanently seeing as analysts had suggested a reconstructive spinal surgery so they could save him from paralysis. Jaguar stepped in and cleared the bill and right as rain, Jimwat is back to being a sprightly spirited sing-songy rapper.

Well, not quite. He still needs his crutches to help him move about but that is just that. He will be back bouncing across the stage soon. He was even back at Calif with his producer and mentor Clemo and Mejja and I for one hope that means that a song will be coming forth soon rather than this just being a photo-op.

Check the lad out below:

These Churchill Raw Comedians are Sure Giving ‘Mchungaji’ & ‘Mtumishi’ a Run for Their Cash

Churchill Show’s Mchungaji & Mtumishi burst into the comical scene with their unique style of comedy: That of intentionally reworking biggest hits into humorous and even sometimes mocking for satirical effect. However, they are now facing stiff competition from another duo.

In comes the Wagithomo. These guys are the in-thing as far as comedy and parody songs are concerned. What makes them stand out is the fact that they do pop songs in Kenyan-native Christian sect, The Akurinus. And they do it with style and clever pitch.

Yes, musical comedy can be a hard thing to pull off; not only do you have to be funny, but you also have to be a good singer, play an instrument. And, Wagithomo have all these.

Although they have no vocal training between them, singing is something they’ve perfected. Despite mutilating some of the best hits of our time, they hit the bulls-eye with the comical relief they offer.

What’s off-the-wall is that Wagithomo is not a real Mukurinu but only comical characters who make every song sound gospel in a funny way.

Throw Back: Here’s The Video Of Top KTN Investigative Journalist mohamed Ali’s Wedding (VIDEO)

I stumbled across this video as I was trawling the internets when I saw that a friend of mine had watched it and shared it as a recommended watch. personally, I happen to be an avowed love atheist but it’s nice to see people who believe in love do their thing.

And indeed, Mohamed Ali who is known for his fearless exploration into political scandals and uncharted territories of “state secrets” that could get lesser men bullets to the skull decided to have his day in style.

His ceremony was a Swahili wedding which I am told by the resident connoisseur of everything Coastal -Kanja Sheila- that these ceremonies last upto an entire week and are quite the opulent affair.

I see no need in investing so heavily ion them but seeing as this is the week of love, I saw fit to celebrate everything lovey dovey and I therefore decided to visit the archives for this particular story. Enjoy the video below:

Check Out The Beautiful And Luxurious Place Sophia Wanuna Went On Holiday (PHOTO GALLERY)

Sophia Wanuna is one of the hottest screen sirens sweetly telling us about the goings on in the world of news. That introduction was admittedly a belaboured attempt at alliteration. Anyway, away from that, the fact still remains that she is simply stunning.

And the lass was recently on holiday at a rather cosy resort in Naivasha and this was what she experienced:

Another Radio Station Hires Street Thugs as Presenters

Ghetto Radio’s Maji Maji seems to have set the pace as far hiring ma-sufferer is concerned. Recently, Pamoja FM launched a new Saturday morning program hosted by ex-thugs. Before these volunteers spun reggae music at the Kibera-based station, they were roaming the streets and threatening people for money.

Now they are reformed, having replaced theft with their work at Pamoja FM and menial jobs like cleaning cars and earning up to Ksh5000 a day.

The move has seen a very cordial relationship with the community in Kibera and the Head of Production, Michael Lokiri reveals, “Most people send in SMSs to tell about issues in particular places. Then Pamoja sends reporters”.

Although Pamoja FM has managed to reach out to some youth, mugging remains a prominent headache.

“If you don’t give them your money and phone they shoot you!” divulges Program Editor, Philip Muhatia.

Pamoja Radio (99.9 FM) is an instrument of peace and a medium of community development.
It is the voice of Kibera; formed in 2007 to empower youth of Kibera and its environs through education, information and entertainment.
