Official Statement Regarding Leaked ‘Sex Tape’ Belonging to NTV’s ‘The Hostel’ Actor

Last week, The Hostel actor, Mathew Nabwiso and another Ugandan actress, Tibba Murungi Kabugu, had their reputations on the line after a video that was uploaded on YouTube was taken for a leaked sex tape.

The rumours were rife on Ugandan blogs prompting the producer who uploaded it to issue an official statement. According to Dilman Dila, video is being taken out of context. It is not porn, or a sex tape.

Here’s what he says;

This is a public apology to Mathew Nabwiso and Tibba Murungi Kabugu, whose reputation is suffering because of a misconception over a video I uploaded on YouTube, a few months ago. The video is being taken out of context. It is not porn, or a sex tape. I appeal to all media houses and tabloids in the country to desist from spreading the lies around this video.
Mathew and Tibba in a scene in The Felistas Fable

I first met both Mathew and Tibba when I was working for The Hostel, a short lived stint that lasted only two months or so, late in 2011. I saw they were fine actors, and since I had a feature film project, The Felistas Fable, I invited them to audition for parts in the movie. I was glad to work with them in this film. It is not a pornographic film. However, there involved a sex scene between the two characters that they would both be portraying. This scene was not simply for the sake of having graphic displays of sex, but it was a plot device and it was also for comic purposes.

It maybe not be possible to show you how we used sex as a plot device or for comic purposes, but I will invite you to watch another short film that I made, in which we use it to great effect. What Happened in Room 13;

{youtube}RZnpN86hPzo{/youtube}

Filming sex scenes are the most boring part of making a film. Anyone who works in the industry knows that. There is a certain degree of undressing, to make the audience believe that it is an actual sex scene, but the actors will remain decently clothed throughout the filming process. However, during one of the takes of this scene, our cleaner interrupted, saying she wanted to wash dishes. Being a low budget production, we were filming on location, and therefore any noises in the kitchen would interrupt us.

During the editing, I saw this clip, and I thought it was funny. I laughed every time I saw it. I thought it would be a good tool to promote the film, especially on YouTube, because there was humor in it, and we are trying to market the film as a romantic comedy. Please note that I have already uploaded other behind the scenes or unused sequences from the film, which are not sex related, but which have humor in them. For example this video clip;

{youtube}TxBYThXl2Ew{/youtube}

Unfortunately, after I uploaded this behind-the-scenes clip, some people mistook it as a sex video. They did not see beyond the characters re-enacting the scene. This forced us to remove the video from YouTube. It’s also unfortunate that the moment we removed the video, after it was online for about three months, some people uploaded illegal copies on social media. I think that it’s because we removed the official video that the false rumors began to spread, and I’m sorry about that. It was been online for more than three months.

I would like to now clarify two things.

1) The clip being spread is not from a pornographic film, nor is it a sex tape. It is from a decent film. That YouTube permitted it to be uploaded testifies to the fact that it falls within YouTube guidelines of acceptable family entertainment. You can watch the trailer of the film here;

{youtube}prPKiv0NIqw{/youtube}

2) The scene was not shot in The Hostel. The Hostel, and the team behind The Hostel, have nothing to do with the video.

I would like to apologize to Mathew and Tibba, and to their families, for the hurt this has done. It was not my intention to profit from their embarrassment. The moment the video was misunderstood, I removed it. The video clip was misunderstood and is being spread out of context. I do not understand why, nor why they are associating it with The Hostel, because the clip has text files identifying the true film from which it was taken. My apologies to Fast Track, and the team behind The Hostel.

I would like to end by appealing to all Ugandans, to media houses and to tabloids, and to social media platforms, to please verify the truth behind a rumor before spreading it. It is your social responsibility to spread only what is the truth, and not to take things out of context.

Ringtone’s Video Saga, You Can Now Watch It Here

Well when he began shooting the video he may did not know what it could end up causing by the time it is done.

First the was the attempted run over by a motorist yet to be known, while shooting the video outside the Macmillan Library. Ringtone suffered a mini-scare after the rogue driver sped of. After all that hustle, one would think all would be rosy that however, was not the case. The video was put up on YouTube and later pulled down by YouTube for ‘pornographic’ content. Was later put up again and YouTube issued an apology to Ringtone.

To Log Or Not To Log… MCSK Issues Ultimatum to All Music Broadcasters

It has been a tug of war for some but the lines have been drawn in a certainly clear way…all radio stations will have to submit their log sheets to MCSK without fail.

Er, log sheets provide information regarding the material broadcasted and with this information MCSK is able to ensure that artist get their due pay for their work. The enforcement of this is what has been previously derailing MCSK efforts to collect due royalties owed to artists in Kenya.

The Radio stations are not protesting and are actually collaborating in a new move that will see the local musician pocket more in the payout period of royalties. Notably are the regional radios broadcasting stations many which signed agreements with MCSK to facilitate the policy enforcement.

It appears to log or not to is no longer the question and thus all music broadcasters have no option but give the artists’ their dues.

Before we get to his response, let me first remind you that this is a very trying time for most of the students who sat the exams, this is a very trying time as some come to the realization that they wasted four years of their lives. And that can be a bitter pill to swallow. So I reached out to Willy Paul and his response was:

“I will announce that jioni but sio kitu mbaya”.

But Uncle Chim Tuna wasn’t satisfied. I needed to know and so I kept pushing.

Bleached Nigerian Popstar Angrily Attacks Lupita Nyong’o

 Do you guys know Dencia? If not ,allow me to introduce you to her.

She is a Nigerian Pop singer known more for bleaching her skin to ghostly white and filling up her body with silicon than actually being a singer.

What a Shame! Renowned International Entertainment Blog Blatantly lies to the World about Lupita’s Possessions among Them Several restaurants (the “Fat Nyong’o Burger” chain) in Nairobi!

With Lupita taking over the world a day at a time there was bound to be out-of –this-world suppositions. Sure enough, the guesswork has begun in earnest just hours after the 31 year old actress won her first Oscar award.

What’s worrying is that these falsehoods are being hawked at a well-known international platform in full glare of an international audience.

Well, according to MediaMass, an entertainment blog with a fairly good Alexa ranking (11,480 in the world) has today shocked the world by declaring that Lupita is the most paid actress in the world. In a sensational article, the writer, one Carol Kearney, blatantly declares that the 12 Years A Slave actress took the No. 1 spot on People With Money’s top 10 highest-paid actresses for 2014 with an estimated $75 million in combined earnings.

She goes to lie that Lupita has an estimated net worth of $215 million.

“She owes her fortune to smart stock investments, substantial property holdings, lucrative endorsement deals with CoverGirl cosmetics. She also owns several restaurants (the “Fat Nyong’o Burger” chain) in Nairobi, a Football Team (the “Mexico City Angels”), has launched her own brand of Vodka (Pure Wondernyong’o – Kenya), and is tackling the juniors market with a top-selling perfume (With Love from Lupita) and a fashion line called “Lupita Nyong’o Seduction”.”

Okay, unless we’ve been living under a rock all the ventures mentioned above are non-existent!

You Saved Me: Young Fan To Lupita Nyong’o

She is has not only made a splash on the red carpet with vibrant colors, but she is also taking America and the world at large by  a storm. And for the following reasons she is not only beautiful and charismatic, but also eloquent and a brilliant actress.

She now has a new feather to her heart, she is changing lives. One day at a time. In a speech delivered at the 7th annual Black Women in Hollywood Luncheon,Lupita revealed how her fame saved a girl from doing something fatal. Here is an excerpt from her speech:

“I want to take this opportunity to talk about beauty, Black beauty, dark beauty. I received a letter from a girl and I’d like to share just a small part of it with you: “Dear Lupita,” it reads, “I think you’re really lucky to be this Black but yet this successful in Hollywood overnight. I was just about to buy Dencia’s Whitenicious cream to lighten my skin when you appeared on the world map and saved me.”

She then continues:

“My heart bled a little when I read those words, I could never have guessed that my first job out of school would be so powerful in and of itself and that it would propel me to be such an image of hope in the same way that the women of The Color Purple were to me.

I remember a time when I too felt unbeautiful. I put on the TV and only saw pale skin, I got teased and taunted about my night-shaded skin. And my one prayer to God, the miracle worker, was that I would wake up lighter-skinned. The morning would come and I would be so excited about seeing my new skin that I would refuse to look down at myself until I was in front of a mirror because I wanted to see my fair face first. And every day I experienced the same disappointment of being just as dark as I was the day before. I tried to negotiate with God, I told him I would stop stealing sugar cubes at night if he gave me what I wanted, I would listen to my mother’s every word and never lose my school sweater again if he just made me a little lighter. But I guess God was unimpressed with my bargaining chips because He never listened.

http://www.fashion-district.org/files/2014/01/Lupita-Nyongo-.jpg

And when I was a teenager my self-hate grew worse, as you can imagine happens with adolescence. My mother reminded me often that she thought that I was beautiful but that was no [consolation], she’s my mother, of course she’s supposed to think I am beautiful. And then … Alek Wek. A celebrated model, she was dark as night, she was on all of the runways and in every magazine and everyone was talking about how beautiful she was. Even Oprah called her beautiful and that made it a fact. I couldn’t believe that people were embracing a woman who looked so much like me, as beautiful. My complexion had always been an obstacle to overcome and all of a sudden Oprah was telling me it wasn’t. It was perplexing and I wanted to reject it because I had begun to enjoy the seduction of inadequacy. But a flower couldn’t help but bloom inside of me, when I saw Alek I inadvertently saw a reflection of myself that I could not deny. Now, I had a spring in my step because I felt more seen, more appreciated by the far away gatekeepers of beauty. But around me the preference for my skin prevailed, to the courters that I thought mattered I was still unbeautiful. And my mother again would say to me you can’t eat beauty, it doesn’t feed you and these words plagued and bothered me; I didn’t really understand them until finally I realized that beauty was not a thing that I could acquire or consume, it was something that I just had to be.

[…] And so I hope that my presence on your screens and in the magazines may lead you, young girl, on a similar journey. That you will feel the validation of your external beauty but also get to the deeper business of being beautiful inside.

There is no shame in Black beauty.”

This is the Ghafla! Fool Who Declared Lupita Will Never Win an Oscar

This morning, my good friend, the Nigerian ting has been left eating his own words. And I made sure he eats a humble pie because immediately Lupita was declared an Oscar winner as the Best Supporting Actress in 12 Years A Slave, I gave him a call to laugh at his cynicism.

Why you may ask? Well, this guy, Uncle Chim Tuna throughout last week was making the loudest noise (you just know how mouthy these West Africans can get – no offence) about how Lupita was not going to win the Academy Awards because she’s black and all bull*defacate*. We (everyone at the office) thought that was the end of the argument but this guy was hell-bent to make us all believe that Lupita will not be anywhere near the coveted Oscar award.

Lupita_wins_4.jpg

To everyone’s astonishment Chim’s glumness pushed him to put up an opinion piece just hours before the 86th Academy Awards ceremony (mind you we don’t work over the weekend so you can imagine how atrocious he can get) in which he went on and on with his conjectures on why this flawless and talented actress won’t be the first Kenyan and African to clinch an Academy Award. I sat in disbelief as I watched the article go viral as he let out a maniacal laughter like The Joker.

Lupita_parents.jpg

That was until 6AM this morning.

Fortunately, the 31 year old breakout beauty won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress becoming the 7th black actress to win and joining 14 other black actors who have won the white-dominated Oscars.

And to make him eat his words to full satisfaction, we let him break the news about Lupita’s huge win 🙂

Lupita_wins_2.jpg

The icing on the cake came in her acceptance speech in which she proved the likes of Chim awfully wrong. In his face, she said;

“…When I look down at this golden stature, may it remind me and every little child that no matter where you’re from, your dreams are valid…”

Now meet Uncle Pessimist Tuna in his full douchebaggery;

Former Celebrated Reggae Radio Host Back on Air

When the number one and most loved reggae station, Metro FM, sank in 2012, it went down with some of the biggest names in reggae in the country. For the next year, Kenyan reggae lovers resorted to alternative sources for their cherished music genre until the birth of Ghetto Radio.

For two years now the famous voices of Jeff Mwangemi, DJ Stano, Njambi Koikai aka Faya Muma), John Kago et al became ‘muffled’.

However, slowly but surely, some of these reggae die-hards are finding their way back on air.

Transcript: Here’s Lupita’s Emotional Acceptance Speech at the Oscars

It’s a big day today and you know why! This morning silver screen goddess, Lupita Nyong’o, became the first Kenyan to scoop an Academy Award. Donned a blue (Nairobi Blue) overflowing dress that brought to mind Cinderella, an emotional Lupita took to the stage to receive the Oscar.

Lupita won the Oscar for best supporting actress Sunday for her role as Patsey in Steve McQueen’s “12 Years a Slave”. In her acceptance speech she was full of praise for the movie’s producer, Steve McQueen, her co-star, Chiwetel Ejiofor and other behind the scenes guys.

Here’s her acceptance speech;

Thank you to the Academy for this incredible recognition. It doesn’t escape me for one moment that so much joy in my life is thanks to so much pain in someone else’s. And so I want to salute the spirit of Patsey for her guidance. And for Solomon, thank you for telling her story and your own.

Steve McQueen, you charge everything you fashion with a breath of your own spirit. Thank you so much for putting me in this position, it’s been the joy of my life. [Tears, applause.] I’m certain that the dead are standing about you and watching and they are grateful and so am I.

Chiwetel, thank you for your fearlessness and how deeply you went into Solomon, telling Solomon’s story. Michael Fassbender, thank you so much. You were my rock. Alfre and Sarah, it was a thrill to work with you. Joe Walker, the invisible performer in the editing room, thank you. Sean Bobbitt, Kalaadevi, Adruitha, Patty Norris, thank you, thank you, thank you — I could not be here without your work.

I want to thank my family, for your training [laughs] and the Yale School of Drama as well, for your training. My friends the Wilsons, this one’s for you. My brother Junior sitting by my side, thank you so much, you’re my best friend and then my other best friend, my chosen family.

When I look down at this golden statue, may it remind me and every little child that no matter where you’re from, your dreams are valid. Thank you.

Photo Of The Day: KOT Find Anyang Nyong’o Already Reaping BIG From Lupita Nyong’o’s Win. He

I came across a very interesting picture that is doing the rounds on twitter courtesy of Tosh Gitonga. The guy with a killer sense of humour. And I just had to share it. When I saw it and shared it with the lads currently in the office, it was decided that it should be photo of the day in celebration of Lupita Nyong’o’s win.

And it would seem we aren’t the only ones celebrating. But Her father is celebrating at another level entirely. Check him out below:

BREAKING NEWS: Lupita Nyong’o Makes history By Becoming The First African To Win An Oscar! Giniwasekao!

I have never been so happy to be wrong! Alright, I have but I have never been so happy to be wrong about someone else! Yesterday I put up a piece explaining why it was doubtful that Lupita would win an Oscar but she did anyway. What an auspicious way to mark the 75th anniversary since the first black person won an Oscar!

I have always said I am infallible but never before have I been so happy to be proven wrong! Lupita Nyong’o. the scion of Professor Anyang Nyong’o has made an entire nation, nay, an entire continent proud with her win.

Uncle Chim Tuna Explains Why Lupita Nyong’o Will Not Win An Oscar Tonight

Today, I like most other Kenyans happen to find myself waiting upon baited breathe for the Oscar Awards ceremony to be held later tonight (probably in the small hours of the morning). I am naturally rooting for Lupita Nyong’o to win after she conquered the hearts of the entire world with her performance in the movie 12 Years A Slave.

For those of you who do not know, she was nominated an Academy Award for outstanding supporting actress for her role as the enslaved Patsey, a role she played to such perfection that she landed herself a nomination -no mean feat. Now, for the idiots reading this, I feel the need to explain that this is strictly an opinion piece and I personally am routing for her. However, after looking at the statistics of the Academy Awards, I cannot confidently say that I see her winning. Allow me to share the statistics before I digest them for you:

LUPITA_OPINION_PIECE.jpg

That is an infograph that merely states this fact: The people who vote for the Oscar’s are 94% white, 77% male, and an average age of 62. That means that the decision makers, the people who matter are not traditionally and indeed to date, inclined to show support for minorities.
Just look at these statistics: black actors who have won an Oscar in the past are an overwhelming 6. Six black actors. They are:

1. Ted Brynner in 1956

2. Sidney Poitier in 1963

3. Ben Kingsley in 1982

4. Denzel Washington in 2001

5. Jamie Foxx in 2004

6. Forest Whitaker in 2006

The only woman of “colour” whatever that means (yes, I hate that term) to have won the best actress leading role is Halle Berry in 2002.

There have been only five best actress supporting role winners in the 85 year history of the awards who are;

  1. Hattie McDonald – 1939
  2. Whoopi Goldberg -1990
  3. Jennifer Hudson  – 2006
  4. Mo’Nique              2009
  5. Octavia Spencer    2011

The statistics are overwhelming indeed. History is clearly enamoured by the plight of black actors/actresses whom it has favoured above and beyond. That is why while I am proud of Lupita Nyong’o, I am not holding out for a win.

Perhaps I am just jaded. Just jarred by the staggering statistics speaking, singing sweet serenades to my hopes and Lupita’s aspirations. But whatever the case, we will have had our star cause ripples in Hollywood and indeed, she is such a smart girl. She took full advantage of the ride while it lasted.

Lupita Nyong'o

And to Lupita -whom I know reads Ghafla, you’ve done us proud. Across the divide and schisms created by politics seeing as your father is a politician. Your legacy is that you transcended petty politics. you won all our hearts.

I just realized that is she did win, she would be the first woman from Africa, and only the sixth black woman to have won. If she did win, she would make history. So scratch all that, let us pray for a miracle.

My entire argument has been nullified. Lupita has won!
