After Being Accused of Sexually Objectifying Women, Mustapha Now Targets School Girls (PHOTO)

Singer Colonel Mustapha has been making headlines most recently for all the wrong reasons; key being sexually objectifying women as alleged by Nyota Ndogo and a group of women from the Coast.

I understand where they are coming from because sexual objectification is a huge problem world-over. Seeing the rage he’d attracted, the singer had to eat a humble pie.

Putting all that behind his back, the ‘Lenga Stress’ hit-maker is now a life coach.

Yesterday, Mustapha made his way to Huruma Girls’ in Kimathi estate, Nairobi, for a counseling session with the girls. Asked what he shared with the girls, Mustapha said;

I told them not give up in life no matter wat plus education is the key. BUT they asked me so many questions like how I handle the pressure due to bad publicity dat am getting.”

His response?

“Mungu ndie ananisaidia. I pray na anasikia maombi yangu. .Mungu amesaidia amenipa roho ya SIMBA.i don fear maneno za watu.”

Here’s Mustapha with some of the school girls;

Maina And King’ang’i In The Morning: Who is To blame When the Man of The House Sleeps With the Househelp?

Today in the morning, Maina and King’ang’i have picked off a topic that they had discussed yesterday. They were discussing men, husbands who leave their wives for the househelp or who begin to sleep with the househelp. Personally, I have never understood this. We have a househelp who is more of an aunt to me than some of my aunties.

And I respect her as my elder. Plus she takes great care of me. Another thing I have never understood is why men sleep with the help. The line is too fine a line between rape and coercion for my liking. At which point is the househelp allowed to say no to your advances? but I digress.

Today, Maina sought to find out whether men or their women are to blame for the situations alot of couples have found themselves in. And what has astounded me is the number of men who have called in to blame their wives for abdicating their wifely duties. One man has even called in to decry the reversed roles in his homestead that see him do all the cooking.

Apparently, when women feel threatened, they simply dismiss the housegirl which I find harsh because it is a cowardly way of dealing with a problem. That said, I wonder whether women also sleep with houseboys. Anyway, tune in to the show and enjoy the morning conversation.

Alex Chamwada Used to Sweep the Liverpool Streets (PHOTO)

They say that whenever people go abroad, they end up undertaking odd jobs inorder to make ends meets. Alex Chamwada is no stranger to the struggle. Even after making for himself quite the name as a news reporter and anchorman. When he went to the UK to further his studies, he had to take on odd jobs.

Personally, I find this to be the realest testament of survival; adapting. Leaving your big name and brand and setting off for the unknown and then doing everything it takes to survive. i came across a picture of him when he worked as a street sweeper and I want to share it with everyone below:

Forget what they say about Men & Kitchen. This NTV Star Can Really Cook! Check Out what He Made

What happens when a man enters the kitchen? What cooks up when a male celeb enters the “ladies only” zone? We stumbled upon a famous NTV Host cooking and the end result was mouth-watering.

He sings, he acts and he mimes but we never knew he can also cook! Unlike other celebs who are usually spotted dining out or confess to having private chefs, for NTV’s Obinna Ike Igwee loves to play the chef.

Obinna_2.jpg

For Obinna who seems like his heart and mind are often ruled by his stomach, a truly fantastic meal turns even the direst of days for him into a delightful one. In fact he reveals that he never eats out.

Last night the ‘Breaktime Show’ host shared with the world what he prepared for dinner and honestly, I must commend his cooking. Check out;

And Now Kenya Has A Homosexual Church! And Joji Baro Wants You To Attend A Service

I like Joji Baro. Why? because he has nads of brass. he is one of the few openly homosexual artists and he is proud of his orientation. That pride is worth more than it’s weight in gold. But away from that, I have come to look up to just how well he takes the knocks sent his way by ignorant members of society who bay for his blood simply because he’s a poof.

But that isn’t even the most intriguing thing about the lad. He is gay, proud and HIV+ but he is a gospel artist. Aye, this fag sings in praise of God. And that is the bit that sends most people bat*defecate* fruity! It sends even the most docile turn-the-other-cheek Christian rabid!

And this will probably send alot more people over the edge: he is inviting you to a service this Sunday that will be held at the first openly “cosmopolitan” church in Africa. Translation? He wants you to join him for a service at the first church that openly embraces homosexuals.

So if you’re a dike or a mancy, grab your kit (Bible and hymn book) and head on down for a service at a church that embraces you asa God’s children equal to the rest of humanity.

White Privilege and Slut-Shaming in Kenya (OR Just Another Day at the Ghafla! Offices)

Today morning I woke up to one of the rudest texts I have ever received from a friend. I was being STRONGLY accused of being “rude and disrespectful” to a certain brand because of this sensational Monday story. The texts read,

“….how rude and disrespectful can it get with the ratchet pictures… that is targeting our brand negatively”

“You guys are messed up for posting those pictures…. wannabe blogs wanna ride on that sh*t after being courteously invited…… Y’all are gutter….”.

I must admit I had no idea what this was about, so I searched for the story, and there it was: our top photo story of the week. I checked out the photos. I formed a personal opinion which I would share with Vinnie, rationally, once I got to the office. Still, I was beyond upset that this person thought they had the right to step to me like that, friends or not. I like it when I receive angry, misdirected, emotionally charged and derisive texts, said no one, EVER.

Then I got to the office, ready to pick everyone’s brain on said pictures, and found out a top PR firm in Nairobi had actually called Vinnie and asked him in not too many words to take down all the pictures involving “foreign girls”, aka the white girls. WHAT?

That’s right. White privilege strikes again.

F*ck that. Ghafla has been putting up pictures upon pictures of ratchetness the gradual degeneration of decorum while drinking for more than a year. There have been many a event accused of being “ratchet”, and similar if not worse pictures have been put up. But never before have the pictures equated to PR honchos calling to demand pictures to be taken down, meetings being urgently called, or multiple furious messages to my personal cell.

The uproar over the photos affirmed that many (if not most) people in Kenya still hold some ridiculous culturally inept views; that white people in Kenya have a presumed greater social status; they have the freedom to move, buy, work, play, and speak freely. So we at Ghafla were to presume the universality of those young ladies’ experiences- the young white girls, that’s normal, they are just having a good ol’ fun wild time. The young black girls dirty dancing though, that’s not normal. That’s different, in this case, it’s “ratchet”-.

Well, the pictures speak a thousand words.“Whiteness” is NOT a proxy for class. Nor should it be for any other social privilege, like being served 10 hot cross buns, even if there will be none left for the white person in line right behind you. (‘member #OccupyArtCaffe). Fun fact: Did you know that caucasian people are a GLOBAL minority. 8% of the world’s population is white. 92% is non white. Sit on that for a little. Yet, the mind-frame of an empire that tried to inadvertently proclaim my motherland, my ancestors dominion, as theirs for less than 60 odd years still attempts to dictate my daily life?

But this white priviledge disaster shall not distract me from a deeper underlying problem in Ghafla. A problem that brings itself to the forefront in the inequality of so-called-ratchet pictures that Vinnie posts after any crazy-wild affair.

The appalling Ghafla culture of slut-shaming.

Ever noticed how the so-called-ratchet pictures are always girls dirty dancing, or grinding, or being sandwiched by to men, or being “daggered”. I’ve been to enough festival-type events to know men be making a fool of themselves too. And since when is simulated sex the only “ratchet” thing going on there?  Where is the fighting, projectile puking, peeing in bushes. Picture this: a girl/guy blacked out in the grass, one shoe off, clothes a hot mess, tufts of grass in their hair. Isn’t that more “ratchet” than daggering? When did dirty dancing become ratchet? Heck, I always thought it was more ridiculous than ratchet. (And by the way, someone give some of these girls a medal for their flexibility and gymnastic prowess when daggering.)

You know, this comes down to this odd Kenyan (and widely pan-African) culture of us collectively burying our heads in the sand. WE STAY PRETENDING. It’s time we just stopped the f*cking pretense. The culture of casual-sex is NOT a new phenomenon in Nairobi. We even have a modifiable phrase for it – chips funga (chips fungee, chips fungwad, chips funga bila paper bag etc…). Why just last week I went on a date with a man who straight up told me he wanted to just “have a thing cuz life is short” and proceeded to ask me if I wanted to go back to his place AFTER A FIRST DATE (and when I declined made a comment to the tune of “Hmmph, you proper women.”). So taking pictures of people dirty dancing and calling it ratchet, is pretty farty and old-fashioned. That ain’t nothing new, there was a whole year when a club in Nairobi had “Bend-Over Thursdays” a night for EXCLUSIVELY daggering. And it was PACKED every Thursday. And don’t front, every single one of us HAS engaged in some inappropriate dancing in public at one point or another, whether drunk, as a dare, as a joke, as dance-floor-sexy-time….

Feminism has a hard time being accepted in many African societies. Personally, it’s been a lot of snarky comments (even from my own family) when I tell people I am a feminist. It runs from me being told “You will not be married” (YUP, YOU ARE RIGHT. Marriage is the definition of my existence, and the yardstick with which I measure all my personal successes), I am accused of being a “Caroline Mutoko”, I am told to watch out I “don’t overdo it like Wangari Maathai” (I guess she just won a Nobel Prize because of all the wrong things she did in her life, and I definitely want to be nothing like her). I struggle to understand why so many women adamantly reject feminism as if they didn’t believe in equality. I’ve learnt (over time and through a lot of interwebs cruising) that what they were in fact objecting to was privileged white middle class feminism.

We have a completely different set of experiences as women, women of color, and women living in a world that doesn’t fully recognize or understand the societal structures of our traditions. African feminism is hard, I won’t deny. We are caught between protecting our traditions and rich history (or in some cases rediscovering them after many years of them being denigrated as ‘superstitions’ ‘UnChristian’ or even worse, being told our culture is shady (definition). SHADY! What the what?!), and educating ourselves on the ways of the world in order to be heard in today’s global world where black women presumptuously means African-American women and not African women. Many African women today have rejected the word feminist. Even if they subscribe to the ideals, they run from the negative connotations associated with that word. For myself, I refuse to let the “negative societal connotation” deter me from calling myself a feminist; I have always been a feminist and will continue to identify as one.

Back to this appallingly blatant slut shaming in Ghafla’s event photos. Slut-shaming picked up a lot of steam when people tried vilifying Miley Cyrus for twerking at the MTv awards. And Twitter, blogs, FaceBook showed out to support her.

Then today we received so much backlash for these pictures (I guess solidarity really is for white women #solidarityisforwhitewomen) .

Lemme get this straight, we were supposed to take down the pictures of the white girls, but let all the other pictures fly? Young black girls in the larger cities of Kenya are being HEAVILY influenced by the white-feminism feminism prevalent in American pop culture that encourage expression of sexuality openly. So it is reinforced to us that it is universally empowering to own your sexuality and be free to express it publicly, without us having the opportunity to fully explore our intersectionality. As a result, Ghafla self-contradicts: celebrating bikini shots of socialites and Ghafla Girls yet condemning hot/sexy girls who are dirty dancing.

slut shaming2Hey, look at these three BFFs having a super fun night!!! (So why the title of the article then?)

I don’t have a one-size-fits-all solution. Bottom line, the schadenfreude in each and every one of us makes stories that lead in with “ratchet” or “exposed” Ghafla’s top stories of the week. I don’t have a problem with that, it’s human nature. I just have a problem with the fact that the de facto standard definition of “ratchet” has become girls grinding or dancing in any way that is sexually suggestive. NO. Here is a Euler diagram for you to better understand what I mean.

C – Ratchet behavior

B- Sexy dancing

A- Sexy dancing that is ratchet behavior

Ya digg? Yeah sure, SOME sexy dancing is ratchet behavior. BUT NOT ALL RATCHET BEHAVIOR IS SEXY DANCING. AND NOT ALL SEXY DANCING IS RATCHET BEHAVIOR.

TL;DR F*ck white privilege. Vincent, stop slut shaming young women who are simply doing a pretty popular dance when they go to events.

Candy n Candy Records Goes Full Throttle at its New Business Frontier

Barely a month after nailing a deal to take over the operations of Sarova Whitesands Beach Resort & Spa’s night club, Club Rhythms, the record label has signed yet another deal with a high end resort at the Coast.

Earlier this week, Candy n Candy CEO, Joe Kariuki, put pen to paper a deal that will see the production house organize and run gigs over the Easter Holiday at the luxurious Nyali International Beach Hotel’s bar, Aqua.

Confirming the deal, Mr. Nabeth Mabeya, the Entertainment Manager, said that Candy n Candy has been contracted to organize high quality events at Aqua Bar over the long Easter holiday.

“Yes, we are working hand in hand with Joe to start trials at the Aqua Bar in preparation for the upcoming Easter holiday,” said Nabeth.

He says that if the chain-events are successful, the classy resort might consider handing Candy n Candy a long-term contract.

“We are testing waters and if it’s successful we’ll consider doing a long-term project.”

Aqua Bar is one of the 3 luxurious bars (the others are Harry’s Bar & Pool Bar) that the luxury beach hotel boasts of.

Seated under the dark island sky filled with hundreds of shimmering stars, the bar offers a new taste sensation of Kenyan and International specialties.

Why You Should Think Of Starting Off Your Radio Career At Media Stream

One Fm is a radio station which has curved out a niche for itself as the only station that plays local, urban music. That basically means that they play Kenyan and African music but I have been noting of late that they play more Naija music. Not that I am complaining, I am just wondering whether there is so serious a lack of quality Kenyan music.

But away from that, please allow me to clarify that I am in no way shape or form associated with One FM or Hits FM, it’s sister company. What exactly is Hits Fm you ask? Well, it’s a station that plays non stop music, non stop hits. And they actually do play the kind of music that will keep a YoloSwagger generation member very entertained.

Now to clarify; exactly what is Media Stream? Well, it is the parent company of both. And so with that, allow me to get into why it is the best place to kiskstart your career:

Well, for those of you not in the know, Media Stream operates on an almost parallel model to Independent recording Labels in America. They are for upstarts, both One Fm and Hits Fm are for upstarts. Be very worried if you end up being called back to them once you have already launched your career. A little like DNG actually. You end up being a big fish in a small pond and you tend to lose touch with reality.

Media Stream has a small audience -something that is actually a blessing in disguise if properly discerned. Here’s why, you have an audience that will be rabidly loyal once you connect with them but still, it’s small enough for you to make a few mistake here and there as you learn the ropes.
Still on this point, the small audience keeps you hungry. You are constantly hungry for more.

Media Stream is the sort of place that is too small for any constraining bureaucracy. You’re free to structure your show as you see fit.

And the people that this company has helped launch are actually surprisingly many. From Miss Mandy to Leah Mutimba to Adelle to DJ Wesley. The list goes on and on.

Reggae Icon Gramps Morgan too is ready for Kenya!

It seems April is officially reggae/dancehall month for Kenya. Shortly dancehall star, Konshens, revealed that he’s headed to the 254, yet another celebrated Jamaican musician has indicated that they may be headed to Nairobi.

Few hours ago, reggae icon, Gramps Morgan, said that he’s ready to jet into the country for a performance.

“Good morning to all of our fans in Africa please tell your local radio station and local promoters that we are ready to come to any country in Africa we love you all and can’t wait to be in your country Kenya Malawi Ganda Nigeria Senegal Gambia Ethiopia South Africa Zimbabwe Tanzania Uganda Morocco Ivory Coast Togo Benin Sierra Leone Liberia we are so ready but you must call your local radio stations or government and local promoters in your country and the Morgan family will be there ready Rockaz!!!”

This announcement makes 3 Jamaican artists who have sent the strongest indications that 254 is in their 2014 diaries.

It all started with Ce’cile and now Konshen and Gramps have hopped on that train.

Say Hello to Coast region’s “Willy M Tuva”

Citizen Radio’s Mzazi Willy M Tuva is undoubtedly the king of radio nationally and stats prove so. He’s perfected his game over the years and is also proving he’s a big-shot on TV thanks to his show, Mseto East Africa.

The talented and extremely humble radio and TV star does exemplary job on both platforms. Having started from humble beginnings, Tuva’s hardwork and dedication has seen his shows grow to become the most celebrated music shows in East Africa!

And now, Tuva seems to have inspired many because Mombasa County also boasts of its own “Willy M Tuva”.

Mombasa’s award winning radio presenter, Gates Mgenge, famous for his Mashav Mashav radio show on Pwani FM is gradually become a household name in showbiz.

Gates_2.jpg

Gates (Eric Gates) has without a doubt grown to be one of the biggest names and a force to reckon with in the radio and entertainment industry in the Coast region.

Born in Embu and raised by his grandparents, Gates’s dream has always been to be on radio. However, that dream was almost stalled since his grandpa wanted him to become an engineer. He is however an engineer by profession and a graduate of the Technical university of Mombasa (formerly Mombasa Polytechnic).

Gates joined the entertainment industry in 2002 as a rapper then became an MC before landing a gig at Pwani FM which has seen the rise and rise of his star.

Colonel Mustapha, Get Your Act Together

Colonel Mustapha first came into the public eye as half of the dynamic duo ‘’Deux Vultures’ that brought hits such as ‘Adhiambo C’ and ‘Katika’.

He then decided to fly out of the ‘Vulture’s Nest ’ and go out on his own releasing a couple of singles among them ‘Hey Baby’ and ‘Lenga Stress’.

To give that extra zing to his music career he went to the most controversial but popular socialite ever Huddah Monroe and together they decided that a relationship could be the push that Mustapha’s career needed. After a series of awkward interviews Huddah decided to ditch the rapper and dismissed their relationship as a publicity stunt. We all thought Mustapha would be the bigger man and end this madness once and for all.

http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-wv_WXQDUtC0/UyMr9wm5zHI/AAAAAAAAVsY/T_M1xK3wjys/s1600/Mustafa_Huddah.JPG

But Alas! Mustapha seems to cling to the fossils of this relationship harder than a leech clings to the skin. His confession on One Fm this morning is what inspired this very article where he discussed Huddah’s prowess or rather lack of it in bed. I literally puked in my mouth. Who does that?

http://cdn.straightfromthea.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/tumblr_mkylx5nYaW1qia1izo2_400.gif

I think it’s very ungentlemanly to go around discussing your sexual exploits; you should never kiss and tell unless you are a child trapped in a man’s body. As much as we like juicy scandalous tidbits about the life of celebrities that was a bit childish. Be a man and keep your bedroom affairs to yourself. Are you a musician or are you a socialite? Hoping from one studio to another to discuss your relationship instead of your music.

Get your act together  Mustafa you are better than this.

This is one TV Show Where All “Ujinga” is Spewed

Ujinga Saucer is a new Web series that will released in a webisode every week. The show is focused on discussing social issues from an ‘ujinga’ point of view.

It’s inspired by the fact that many issues are just discussed from only one point of view plus a lot of social issues are not discussed in public as people shy away from such sensitive issues. We believe people will get insight on some of issues and change their thinking.

The first webisode titled “OPERATION EPUKA MCHELE” focus on “How to escape the famous ‘mchele’ and its consequences.

These are the Guys who had Avril “Ringing Bells” Recently

We all know that singer Avril is officially off the shelf. However, recently Avril couldn’t contain herself as she went ahead to ‘ring bells’ as she was ordered to by some guys she’d just met.

But who are these guys?

Well, they go by the name ‘Boomba Boiz’.

Boomba Boiz is a boy group made up of Moses Kilonzo aka Nascentie and Patrick Muteti aka Labcy.

Moses was born in Athi River where he grew up and went to school. In 2002 he joined Matinyani Secondary School in Kitui. He later transferred to Mavoko Secondary School. During the same year Moses was involved in an accident and due to financial difficulties could not continue specialized schooling. Never one to give up Moses turned to what he new best; Music. While in school he had developed a keen interest in rap music and with so much time in his hands Moses begun developing lyrics.

Partrick on the other hand was also born in Athi River and attended Kanaani Primary School before joining Mavoko Secondary where he met Moses. They realized immediately that they both had a liking for rap music but was not until in December 12th 2004 during his birthday that they formed Boomba Boiz.

Boomba_Boiz.jpg

One year later the boys recorded “Ngeta” at South West Studios. This was basically a rap song that describes “street life thuggery”. In 2006 the boys moved to Ogopa Studios and recorded and released “4WD.” The message behind this song was that the use of condoms was not 100% protection against the deadly virus HIV. Abstinence was the best option.

The Boiz then took a break in production and was taken through the rigorous Ogopa talent development program in order to improve their skills. Most recently the Boiz are back in studio and have started recording again with releases expected in 2013.

Here’s where they are asking Avril to ‘piga kengele’;

Kenyan Singer Victoria Kimani Opens Up About The Kenyan Illuminati (VIDEO)

If you still believe in the Illuminati and the one world government system being set in place by shadowy demonic figures, you aren’t alone. Scant consolation like the man being informed his ward at Mathare Hospital is full. Actually, I too believe in the one world government system but through banking and financial interests. I digress.

I recently had the pleasure of hosting Victoria Kimani at Ghafla and when I did, I asked her about her opinion about the view held by a multitude of Kenyans about there being a Kenyan equivalent of the illuminati. And she obliged me by even deigning it fit to respond to the question. This is what she thinks:

So now, check out some of her music and inform yourself on just why she is considered one of the hottest Kenyan exports to Africa at the moment:

Watch Your Back ‘Elani’! Here Comes Worthy Challenger

‘Elani’ is currently the hottest contemporary band in Kenya (other than Sauti Sol). Start naming Kenyan bands and I bet you ‘Elani’ will pop up among the top 2, hands down.

However, there’s a new entrant in the game.

Meet Sofia the Band. It’s made up of lead singer Audrey backed up by strong instrumentalist. They came together by coincidence after having met at a film school that Audrey.  The band simultaneously performed together felt a cosmic connection such as kindred spirits and from that point begun having jam sessions together and came up with a couple of songs after linking up again over a short period.

After having seen that the fusion of their talents created a unique sound, they sought out to stick together and form a band. The name Sofia came about when they attended a deeply moving talk, where Audrey picked up on one of the means of the word Sofia being wisdom in Hebrew. They agreed that the word resonated strongly with them and the type of music the wanted to produce as they viewed the lyrics within their songs should be meaningful and provide some enlightened wisdom on various matters that are dealt with every day.

Elani (Maureen Kunga, Bryan Chweya, Wambui Ngugi)

Aside from just their singing talent, Audrey with her lovely soulful voice not only sings but is a brilliant rapper that picked up on her gift whilst changing her tempo at an open mike session as she performed a spoken word piece.

The band has wise musical inspirations such as American Artists India Arie and Lauren Hill for Audrey and a number of African artists such as Femi Kuti and ASA.

Sofia has recently releases their brand hot new single ‘Amazing’ which has a neo-soul/afro fusion feel and guaranteed to be the most soul music to fill your ears this year.

They have a soulful lyrical combination with use of English, Ugandan, Kiswahili and Luo attributed to their diverse culture heritage.

Here’s ‘Amazing’ for your listening pleasure;
