This is what Happens when a Charismatic Performer hooks up with a Soulful Singer

If you are a Tusker Project Fame fan, Kato Change is not a new name to you. And if you’re a jazz lover, you definitely know this great performer.

However, for those who might not know about him, Kato is a charismatic performer with inimitable improv chops. Hailing from Kenya, the guitarist’s beaming onstage persona is paired with a nimble command of his instrument.

He continually draws from a heritage of jazz legends as well as flamenco, rhythm and blues and rock genres, creating sounds that are both familiar and utterly singular.

One of the premiere jazz guitarists in Kenya, he’s a champion of dynamic global cultural exchange who taught himself how to play the guitar. He’s currently one of the leading online community musicians on YouTube.

On the other hand, there is Lisa Oduor-Noah, a young silky-voiced artist with a lot of soul. Influenced by the likes of Lauryn Hill, Jill Scott and Emily King, Lisa has performed alongside Neema Ntalel, Charles Righa, Kato Change and Just A Band.

These two music powerhouses recently hooked up and the result is simply mind-blowing! Check this out;

Kiss 100 FM’s Lyndah Nyangweso Opens Up Up About Wanting To Be Mistress

What happens when you get ratchet nairobi girls on a phone call expressing nothing but thirst? Today’s Big Breakfast conversation. Lyndah Nyangweso today was on one and she decided to let us in on her tip. Apparently, she has a friend who is happily in a clandestine affair and plays the role of mistress with no qualms whatsoever. And Lyndah Nyangweso is wondering whether that is the way to go.

And then the thirst became real palpable! Callers of the Nairobi extraction begun admitting and confessing to being clandestine lovers. What shocked me is how eager Nairobi girls are to enter such unions. The lazy louts! Talking about having a man who can take care of them yet their father rides a bicycle to town? Mechi uno!

Mek una get am sef! Why udey shakara wid another’s moto and house? Scrobo ting na dos your vibe! I am salty as the Dead Sea about this one. Anyway, the lasses astounded me. One called in to tell the nation and her mother that she is in a relationship with a married man who lives in the U.K and I was utterly gobsmacked!

How is that something to be proud of? Anyway, hmph! Na dis Nairobi tings! And then they wonder why no one wants to touch them once the cross that 30 year expiration date! Salty Sam says you should probably look for that man whose mistress you were seeing as chasing the vanity of affluence was what you were into.

World Jazz Day Concert Comes to Nairobi!

In a bid to quench the growing demand for jazz music from Kenyans, Kijiji Entertainment has partnered with All That Jazz to stage a one day jazz concert in Nairobi.

To be staged on April 30, the concert will coincide with the commemoration of World Jazz Day. The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) officially designated April 30 as International Jazz Day in order to highlight jazz and its diplomatic role in uniting people from all corners of the globe.

The partnership has been driven by All That Jazz‘s twin goals of growing and deepening the jazz audience in Kenya, and offering the already converted jazz fans opportunities to socialize. Kijiji Entertainment is expected to produce an exciting and unforgettable experience.

“The Kenyan music industry lacks a strong jazz culture All that Jazz hopes to become this cultural centrepiece where Kenyans can enjoy indigenous jazz music as well as contribute to building the jazz culture in the region: a fact that will in the long run help cement jazz locally,” said Kanjii Mbugua, CEO of Kijiji Entertainment.

kanjii_mbugua.jpg

Kanjii

According to Kanjii, jazz music in the country holds high potential basing on the number of fans who have thronged to the occasional concerts: a case in point being the recent Safaricom Jazz Festival.

“Kijiji Entertainment’s partnership with All That Jazz is in line with the company’s ideals of developing cultural properties that will contribute to the growth of the cultural landscape of Kenya and the entire East African region,” Kanjii explained.

Kenyan Rapper Breaks His Silence over Leaked TV Host Sex tape

On Tuesday, Love & Hip Hop: Atlanta (LHHATL) host, Mini Faust shocked the world and threw Twitter in a frenzy after a sex-tape with her boyfriend and co-star on the VH1 show, Nikko Smith, “mysteriously” found itself on the blogospehere.

Apparently, Faust and Smith had agreed to let Vivid Entertainment release the video, and producers of LHHATL okayed the tape for mass production as well.

For Paris Hilton and Kim Kardashian, releasing sex tapes eventually led to reality show stardom. It appears Mimi Faust is taking the reverse route. And that’s what Kenyan rapper, K-Nel, seems t have a problem with.

He opines;

Can I preach for 2 seconds? When Kim Kardashian did a sex tape, she was “praised”, made a killing and became the more time multimillionaire she is today! When the likes of Paris Hilton did the same, they laughed all the way to the bank!! Now a black mature woman named Mimi Faust does the same….and people out here screaming “black women are hoes.” Wait a minute?! Hoes? Really? So Kim and Paris get the “pass” coz they are, let’s say “white” superior beings? You know what? Am a drop a Sex tape too! *sips lemonde*

For you curious cats, click HERE if you really want to see what the NSFW footage was. However, we don’t recommend it.

Faust is the ex-girlfriend of music producer Stevie J who also had his own sex tape scandal. An intimate video of Stevie J and rapper Eve leaked in 2000.

Kenyans React To Corazon’s Twerk Video! The Comments And Tweets Are Too Funny! (PHOTOS)

Yesterday I came across a video of Corazon Kwamboka doing a rather bizarre dance for the cameras in nothing more than her knickers. I wasn’t impresed. Neither was I bemused and it seems like Kenyans were also feeling cheated. And from the comments they left on our comment section and on twitter, there was no love lost. Kenyan Rap Duo Hooks Up with ‘Mental Case’ Girl

What would you do when you met a girl a mental case and wouldn’t give you space to do your stuff? An upcoming Kenya rap duo found itself in that awkward position.

“Mental Case” is about a cute girl who has a thing for a doctor she went to visit. However after the first visit she keeps going back daily but not for normal medication; she requires other services that are freely offered by the doctor.

She knows she is sick and the only this is the only doctor that can heal. However, she wants the medication daily and that’s why she’s referred to as a “mental case”.

ChuMilo puts it as “she knows am that doc, she knows I don’t floss, she likes to be close she is so fine but she’s a mental case”

Lovince’s mellow voice on chorus gives to this Big Soul produced track a Guarantee resonance with those who have sticky love experience, the track was recorded independently at Sub Sahara Entertainment.

ChuMilo and Lovince are two distinguished & multi talented new entrants to the East African music scene, they blend perfectly with their unique differentiated styles to create perfect duo that is going to take music industry by storm.

After Kiss 100 FM Was Sold, Kalekye Mumo Has A Big Surprise For Everyone!

If you are a dedicated Kiss 100 listener, you will notice that for a while now, Shaffie Weru has been flying solo aye? Rather convenient that the decision for him to ride solo came after the story broke that Kiss 100 has been sold aye? Where is she? She has been notably absent from the show she hosts with Shaffstar.

I can reveal that she is on holiday. She has been galavanting all across the globe having been spotted in London and Leeds. You know Uncle Chim Tuna has family all across the face of the Earth aye? So it wasn’t too hard for me to call up some fam over in Leeds and have them look for Kalekye.
When they did trace her, they passed on a message from the Uncle which was, “What exactly is going on?” First off, she intimated at being on a small holiday of sorts and further conversation led me to believe that Manchester will be her next stop.

But what exactly is she upto? Well, her response to that specific question was, “Don’t fret, all I can say is that its NEW and awesome…. First off to London for a well deserved break all through to Easter, then we can officially discuss whats happening.

And my niblings tell me a ring was involved… But aslong as it isn’t one ring to rule them all, I am happy for her. Keep it Ghafla for more information as it unfolds!

Kenya Put Under The Spotlight By International Media For It’s Racist Handling Of Refugees

Al Jazeera has been on the fore front of updating the global village citizenry on the aftermath of the Westgate terror attacks. When al-Kebab terrorists attacked Westgates, the cowards caused what can only be described as an earthquake whose ripples are still being felt upto date in Kenya.

The terrorist scum’s attack has been sending shockwave after shockwave that rattle the Kenyan psyche and the government finally intervened to deal with al Kebab once and for all. But that move which has people of Somali extraction being deported is being criticised:

“The most devastating legacy of European control of Rwanda was the transformation of social distinctions into so-called ‘races’. We were classified and dissected, and whatever differences existed were magnified according to a framework invented elsewhere […] The colonial theory of Rwandan society claimed that hostility between something called ‘Hutu’, ‘Tutsi’, and ‘Twa’ was permanent and necessary.”

Today, it seems obvious that the murder of 800,000 people is not an overnight event but rather the result of deliberately cultivated hate over a lengthy period. It begins with the classification and dehumanisation of people and communities, with differences magnified according to frameworks invented elsewhere and leads to “permanent and necessary” hostility, and eventually, disaster.

These are important lessons for the rest of the continent. They are particularly relevant for Kenya today.

Following a series of terrorist attacks across the country, the government has launched a crackdown on supposed criminal and terrorist elements, but one which actually seems to target the country’s minority Muslim and Somali populations. As the country marks a year since the swearing in of President Uhuru Kenyatta, the venue of his inauguration – Kasarani Stadium – has been playing host to thousands of almost exclusively ethnic Somalis who have been arrested for not producing proper identification documents.

For many of them, officially sanctioned harassment is nothing new. For the last half-century, Kenyan authorities have treated Muslims and ethnic Somalis with suspicion, seeing them at best as just short of being Kenyan and at worst as a fifth column – the enemy within. In fact, as an essay by Professor Jeremy Prestholdt of the Department of History at the University of California, San Diego states: “The government of Kenya’s antiterrorism initiatives have compounded an already deep sense of alienation among those most severely affected by the new measures: Kenyan Muslims, particularly those of Arab and Somali ancestry.”

In colonial times, their status as native Africans was at best ambiguous and in the run-up to independence, a push towards greater autonomy at the coast and the desire of the Somali population in then Northern Frontier District to join Somalia, heightened perceptions of these communities as traitors to the Kenyan cause. The paranoia of the upcountry elites who took over from the British simply served to reinforce these views.

As the report of the Truth, Justice and Reconciliation Commission showed, for most of independent Kenya’s history, the government has systematically marginalised and oppressed these populations. Its policy towards them has been one of demonisation and collective punishment. It is a history replete with rape, massacres and other human rights abuses, one in which the differences magnified according to frameworks invented elsewhere became defining features of a “permanent and necessary” hostility. It has to be noted that the same treatment, though not necessarily to the same extent, was meted out to other communities, such as the Luo, who were also perceived as a threat to the Old Establishment.

Seen within the context of this history, the current administration’s actions are perhaps not surprising. Today the language of counter-terrorism is being employed to continue this tradition of dehumanisation and delegitimisation. It is a tradition that allows “Kenyans” to identify with the tragedy and triumph of baby Satrin Osinya while remaining blind to the suffering of Somali infants spending their nights in police cells. “Refugee” has been made synonymous with illegality and terrorism, with a status undeserving of rights. Like the Kenyan Somalis and the Muslims of the coast, their presence has been shown to be merely tolerated rather than accepted, and deeply suspect to boot.

In these populations, as marginalised at the centre as they were in the periphery, the government has found a convenient scapegoat for its failures. According to a report titled Kenya and the Global War on Terror by Samuel Aronson of the London School of Economics, “The current anti-terrorism strategy in Kenya neglects the history and geopolitics of the nation and is thus flawed in its most basic capacity.” But I think the reality is a lot more sinister. The government doesn’t ignore this history. It exploits and fortifies it.

What it deliberately ignores is that “Wahhabism is being rejected by most Kenyan Muslims and that of the roughly 200 mosques in Mombasa, ‘maybe five [can] be considered extremist'”. What it is unwilling to acknowledge is “the difference between radicalised terrorists and theologically conservative Muslims”, or that “the predominantly Sunni coastal population takes issues with Shia and Wahhabi foreigners who, according to many on the coast, lure the ‘lesser educated and financially needy Africans away from the true faith'”. It is more convenient to believe “the coastal [and Somali] population is mainly terrorists”.

That makes it easy to distract from the real failures – corruption and incompetence. Counter-terrorism efforts have been more about racial profiling and less about intelligence gathering and actual police work.

But worse than that, by following in the footsteps of previous regimes, the government not only makes us all less safe, it perpetuates the very logic of exclusion that led to the terrible events in Rwanda 20 years ago.

Disturbing Documentary on Terrorism Airs Tonight

Kenya has been the scene of various attacks attributed to terrorist elements. The country has been under high threat from terrorism with the main threat coming from extremists linked to Al Shabaab.

The National Police Service has prepared a documentary highlighting how terrorists operate and the challenges faced by terrorism.

After a long wait, the documentary on terrorism, On The Heels of Terror, will finally air on all major TV stations; KBC, KTN, Citizen TV, K24 and NTV tonight and tomorrow (16th April) and just watching its promo is very disturbing.

An Al-Shabaab member is heard saying, “Lazima shingo za makafiri zishughulikiwe…”

However, Jamia Mosque (Nairobi) has protested the airing of the documentary arguing that it’s only intended to solidify (among Kenyans) the ongoing extra-judicial police actions. In a protest letter to media editors, the mosque warns that the documentary is ‘toxic’.

Here’s the promo;

Media Wars: NTV Loses Out On Top Executive Ian Fernandes And He Is Taking The Production Team With Him

Ian Fernandes is one of the biggest personalities within Kenya’s media fraternity. For those not in the know, he would be the man behind the curtains to Nation’s Wizard of Oz. It is reported -and with rather dramatic effect- that he turned the fortunes of NTV as an entity around after joining the team from KTN.

The lad who is an engineer by training, joined NTV at a point when it was struggling against KTN and turned it’s fortunes around but was headhunted by Mediamax after the current CEO’s tenure was deemed a failure as his policies fell short of driving up the viewership.

The man, Paul Wanyangah is responsible for a move that saw Mediamax poaching 30+ Royal Media staff members back in 2012 as the move did not bring viewers to the stable. It is also reported that the only spike they witnessed was during the campaigns when Citizen TV made a play for the Nyanza audience which alienated the Central Kenyan audience but the spike in ratings was shortlived.

The misinformed move saw news anchors get paiud upto a reported paid up to Ksh 1.2 million per month in some instances with Belinda Obura and Tom Mboya said to be leading the pack of the millionaire anchors at K24.
When I was informed of the goings on, I took too long attempting to get someone to go on record as my source to no avail and as i craft thius article, I realize Kahawa Tungu beat me to the punch -and has additional information. That will not happen again.

Keep it Ghafla for more information as the situation unfolds.

Update: Vehicle That Killed Hip Hop Artiste Impounded

Police have impounded a suspected car involved in a hit-and-run incident that claimed the life of legendary Kenyan hip hop rapper, G-Wiji AKA Kamanda Moseti. However, details about the killer driver are still scanty.

According to new information we just received G-Wiji was run over on 3rd April and not last weekend as it had earlier been reported on social media. It is also reported that the vehicle has been impounded at the Kasarani Police station as investigations are underway.

These new developments also indicate that G-Wiji’s body has been lying at the morgue for a week now and only an autopsy can reveal more about his death.

Hot Radio Host Calls it quits

One of the youngest and sassy radio hosts has quit her radio gig after 10 months on air.

Hits FM’s The Chill Spot host Hailey Gachoka, has left the radio station and today will be her last day on air.

“Today, I decided to take a leap of faith. After much consultation and deliberation, I am going to do exactly that, throw myself into the open,” said Hailey in part.

Quoting the author of ‘The Sun is Snowing’, Joy Bell C, Hailey justified her exit from One FM sister station.

Here’s what she posted on her fan-page a few minutes ago;

“The only way that we can live, is if we grow. The only way that we can grow is if we change. The only way that we can change is if we learn. The only way we can learn is if we are exposed. And the only way that we can become exposed is if we throw ourselves out into the open. Do it. Throw yourself.”
― Joy Bell C.

Today, I decided to take a leap of faith. After much consultation and deliberation, I am going to do exactly that, throw myself into the open.
My uncle once said to me, “If you don’t go for what you want, you’ll spend your life settling for what you can get.”
So, with that said, and to make a long story short, today will be the last day I work at 91.5 Hits. (Media Stream)

Hailey_Gachoka.jpg

It’s been an amazing journey,I’ve learnt so much,of which I will be eternally grateful. I also got to meet and work with some great people! HitsNation, you will be missed, but here’s to the future of #TeamWinningMentality.

Meanwhile, I’ve got a great show planned tonight on #TheChillSpot!
Keep it Hits

Ghafla! wishes her all the best in her new venture.

Nameless Opens up About How Tough Life Was For Him And The Secret To His Success (VIDEO)

Nameless is one of the artists in Kenya who have proved that not only does there music have longevity but their careers too have continuity. Nameless has entertained successive generations of Kenyan youth and his music is still enjoyed. Trust that this is why you still hear DJs bumping some Nameless at the club -from the old to the new.

And he decided to open up about just how tough life can be and indeed has been for him in the past. Back when he was hassling about attempting to get his talents to take care of his bills and responsibilities. All that. Real struggles that every Kenyan can relate to -and especially up coming artists.
Personally, I like seeing artists use their artistry to give back to society in whatever way they can. And this is just that. Check out the video below and let me know what you think of it:
