OPINION: BET Awards Ashamed of African Musicians? Maybe…

The BET Awards 2014 went down two Sundays ago but for some time now there has been disquiet over the awards that seek to celebrate African Americans and other minorities in music, acting, sports, and other fields of entertainment over the past year.

For instance, many people don’t know that this year’s winner of Best African Act, Davido, received his award way before the main award ceremony started something different from what’s witnessed with other non-African winners. The cameras never showed where they were seated nor did they show the crowd’s response when Davido got on stage. In 2013, too, Ice Prince received his award to an almost empty auditorium when everyone had walked out.

Davido gives his acceptance speech after receiving his award

So this year, a renowned Nigerian blogger, Replay Tunes, decided he’s not going to shut up as African acts are embarrassed at the international stage. They opine;

“Last year, we watched as Ice Prince walked proudly on stage to receive his BET award, we smiled and applauded as he called up his fellow African acts to join him on stage in a show of solidarity. Later to my shock and disappointment I discovered that Ice Prince’s part was only aired on BET for Africa and UK.

This year, Davido did Nigeria proud by winning the BET award for Best International African act (BIAA). However, it was obvious the award was presented to him before the main award ceremony kicked off.

Without going into too much writing lets compare BET to the UK’s MOBO awards -At the MOBO awards, African acts that win in their various categories are awarded the same courtesy as their international counterparts. Everybody no matter what sort of star you are is in one room and the awards are presented in front of all attending Audience.

This is irrefutable evidence to me that BET or the black American music and entertainment industry and audience which they represent are truly ashamed of African acts. However they would not want to be seen as ignoring or being left out of the African wave (MTV MAMA) so they throw a bone.

BET Awards reminds me of the policy of racial segregation on the public transit system of Montgomery, Alabama when in 1955 Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat for a white person and move to the back of the bus.

Africa does not need BET, we are stars in our own right and we do not need some entertainment network in America to tell us what we are worth? It beats me why our established acts and their handlers would fall over themselves for this discriminatory show of support if there was ever such a thing – are we not aware of our own worth?

What a show of ultimate disrespect this is!!!!!

Ice-Prince-is-congratulated-by-his-fellow-nominees-at-BET-Awards-13.jpg

Ice Prince is congratulated by his fellow nominees at BET Awards 2013

Think about it for a second;

The poor International African acts are mandated to get to the venue before start off time so they could quickly collect their awards before the glittering American celebrities arrive.

My question also is, are the international African acts allowed to sit with their American counterparts or like Rosa Parks were they relegated to the shadows not to be seen?

Think about this article and if you are an African act reading this, ask yourselves –

Do I really need to be discriminated against and humiliated like this in order to receive validation from BET?

My advice to African acts is; Concentrate on getting to the MOBO’s instead and forget BET, their mentality of segregation and discrimination is ingrained and won’t disappear anytime soon because this is all the know this is their reality.”

Media Houses Warned Against Airing Hate-Speech

Hate speech fueled Post Election violence in 2007 and that is why the The Communications Authority of Kenya (CAK) wants to curb the spread of hate speech by forbidding media outlets form airing hate speech.

In a statement sent to media houses, Mutua Muthusi, the director of consumer and public affairs for the CA said that

“It has come to the attention of the Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) that some broadcast stations are taking advantage of the prevailing political situation in the country to air content containing hate speech or that may divide the country along ethnic lines. The Authority hereby wishes to remind broadcasters that the constitutionally guaranteed Freedom of Expression does not extend to spread of hate speech, propaganda for war, incitement to violence, advocacy of hatred that, among others, constitutes ethnic incitement, vilification of others persons or community or incitement to cause harm,” Muthusi said.

He called for responsible and responsive reporting that catered to the needs of the public in different sections of the country

.
People spreading ethnic slurs on social media were also not left out and were  warned that spread of hate speech, incitement to violence and advocacy of hate would not be condoned as it was unlawful and was punishable by law.

Ghafla Exclusive: Mdundo Pays Artists 4 Shillings In Royalties

Mdundo is a first in the country. they were the first to set up a digital outlet for artists to get out their music -and they did so in an organized, transparent manner. That was a huge turn around from the way things had been in the past when Kenyan artists simply knew that they had received royalties without knowing how the calculations were made.

A couple of days back, I even put up an article celebrating the fact that Mdundo had paid out royalties but even before the dust could settle, I was accosted by an unimpressed femcee who told me that Mdundo had paid some artists the grand total of 4 shillings.
Aye, you read that dugit right. There are artists such as Laika who only earned 4.00/-!

That isn’t enough to buy an orbit (P.K) chewing gum. But what gives? For those of you not in the know, the Mdundo platform is an avenue through which Kenyan artists get their music out to people who are interested in downloading the. This week, the most downloaded songs were:

1. Delillah – Hopekid
2. Message sound – DJ Lyta
3. Upande wa pili wa sarafu – P The MC (NEW!!!)
4. Wasumbufu Wa Kizazi feat. Kad Go & Songa – One The Incredible
5. Mwanake feat. Kaberere – Benachi
6. Stars spell my name feat. African ID – Young Morgan
7. Bado Nakupenda feat. Safari Sound Band – Rabbit Kaka Sungura
8. Hiphop MC – Malle (NEW!!!)
9.Kereka – DK Kwenye Beat
10. Nitasubiri – Jux

11. Prokoto feat. Ommy Dimpoz & Diamond– Victoria Kimani
12. Toborra – Diddi Kimer (NEW!!!)
13. MaMa feat. Whiz Vic & Miss Tee – Lil Felly (NEW!!!)
14. Dear Gambe feat. Belle 9 – Young Killer (NEW!!!)
15.Usikonde – Mr Seed
16. Gitumi (The Reason)  Harry Kimani
17. Sheria – Sarabi
18. Haiwi Haiwi – Wendy Kimani
19.
Nikikutazama Live At RawMdundo – H_art The Band (Penya Africa)
20. Lupita Nyong’o (Kamba) – Ken Wa Maria
21. Murdah – Kevoh Yout
22. Naweza – Parking Lot Grass
(NEW!!!)
23. Woman In Love – Vivian (NEW!!!)
24. Shillingi Yangu feat. KenRazy & DNA – Visita (Grandpa Records)
25. Dunia Ina Mambo – Just A Band

So what gives? Could it be that the artists who only earned nominal royalties didn’t garner downloads? And if this is the case, who is to blame? Because you cannot blame a platform that is there to help you. And they even cleared the air with this statement:

What does an artist stand to gain when they join Mdundo.com?

At Mdundo, we pride ourselves in being transparent. Once music is uploaded, an artist is able to track each download they receive. They can also submit news stories and keep an updated profile for their fans. We also have a dedicated team to assist in any queries, new content, industry-related communication and music promotion. As mentioned earlier, Mdundo has created events and initiatives for the benefit of our artists. And lastly, unlike other digital distribution platforms, Mdundo pays out royalties to our artists on a quarterly based on downloads.  We are currently collecting artists metadata in initiative that will allow us to partner with platforms like iTunes and increase our artists reach. It’s clear that Mdundo is on the right track and has the artist best interests at heart.

Groundies:Jalang’o Pulling His Best Groundie Pose (Photos)

Selfies and groufies had better take a back seat because groundies and climbies are in and are taking over social media by storm.

In case you haven’t heard about groundies or climbies , let me bring you up to speed. Groundies as the name suggests involved lying on the ground and taking a pic while climbies involve climbing on something and taking a picture.

Groundies were made trendy by drive show hosts Shaffie Weru and Kalekye Mumo who were the first recorded Kenyan celebrities to take a groundie. Other celebrities are now doing the groundie, among them Dillish Mathews, Bob Collymore,Wahu  and now Jalang’o.

The Papa Shirandula actor took a few groundies with pal Chris Kirwa and Alex Mwakideu

ADULTS ONLY: Kenyan Doctor Caught by Wife Misbehaving With Nurses

Trapped is a hilarious audience-pleasing fast-paced comedy. Its physical over-the-top makes our last show Dangerous Affairs seem like a prayer meeting by comparison.

The comedy is starring Kenya’s superstars directed by Derrick Amunga and Mbeki Mwalimu. The setting of Trapped is a medical hospital. A doctor (Nick Ndeda) is practicing the lecture he will deliver to an assembly of fellow gynaecologists in less than an hour. The speech’s success is vital to his career.

Interruptions abound. First it’s various other medical staff rehearsing for a performance (i.e. the cheeky Nigerian doctor played by Maina Olwenya; tough talking matron played by Veronica Waceke; a pregnant intern doctor played by Lulu Wilson and the new doctor played by Henry Gitau Ngogoyo). Then a long-ago ex (Wangari Gioche), who was once a nurse at the hospital, brings the news that she gave birth 16 years earlier to the doctor’s daughter (Janet Kirina) and the daughter is in the hospital in search of Dad! Yes, there is his harsh wife (Rosemary Waweru), and she knows nothing of the past liaison!

And in the spiraling chaos of deceit, false identity and manic cover-up that ensues, the mission is to avoid the daughter, pacify the ex, keep the chief specialist and hospital deputy director (Derrick Amunga) at bay and fend off various distractions, among them a patient from deep in the village excited by the goings-on (Johnson Chege) and an inquisitive police officer.

Too Funny! Comedian Obinna Has Some Words Of Advice For All The Socialites/Gold diggers

Obinna is one of the funniest men I have ever met. When I met him, right off the bat, I was struck by his ability to make light of everything. From then on, everytime I have interacted with him, he has managed to tickle my funny bone. But away from that. I came across his relationship advice and I couldn’t help myself. I just had to share it. Why? Because of how pertinent it is in the day of the socialites.

And what he had to say was so subtle that many would, nay, many will overlook it yet it needs to be the very mantra women today sing. Why? Because it will help the entire lot of them begin to be taken seriously and not just as the flavour of the week. And this is what he had to say:

Drama as Gun-Wielding Gang Strips & Robs Models during Photo Shoot. Gang Leader Captured But Escapes (PHOTOS)

Last Sunday, The Aftermath Modelling Agency had a photo shoot at the Arboretum, Nairobi, and all was well until a gang of armed robbers emerged from the woods wielding guns and threatening the models.

According to the agency, the photo shoot had just began but was cut shortly by the gang that robbed the models of their clothes, phones, money among other valuable possessions. The robbers then took off but, the gang leader wasn’t lucky enough as he was later apprehended.

However, the thieving bastard managed to escape as he was being led to the Police Station because the rest of his gang members unleashed terror by firing shots in the air giving their leader a chance to get away during the ensuing commotion.

Lucky for the agency, they had taken photos of the gang leader and also managed to squeeze information out of him that may lead to his arrest.

His name is Steven Chege Njuguna,D.O.D 18.07.1986 ID no 25833171 from Maragua District Kandara Division Ruchu Location and Kariva Sub-Location He attended St. Michael’s Hill School, Njiru between 2003 and 2004 and his Family bank account is 051000005324 and Equity 0240160996332. Check This Video Mocking All Of Kenya’s Socialites (VIDEO)

The internets are quite the invention! I think this should be the one human innovation that I am happy about that has come forth in the last 50 years. Why? Because it saves the likes of me from having to watch the rubbish shows on Kenyan TV. And I came across one such series that is done by a local lad by the name of Geoffrey Githui.

The Youtube Channel is called Ninja Tv and I came across a video mockery about Kenya’s socialites. From Vera to Huddah and even Corazon. The content I felt needed some teeth. Afterall, it’s on the internet so you do not have all the moralists demanding tame content.

That said, I enjoyed it immensely. Check out the video below:

Jaguar Goes Shopping For An Unbelievably Expensive Luxury Car (PHOTO)

Jaguar is one of the wealthiest artists Kenya has produced. Sadly, it cannot be said that he earned his monies through royalties because Kenyans do not support their artists enough for them to actually turn entertainment into a millionaire minting business -gospel. So you and I know that Jaguar’s money comes from his side hustles and this lad is hardworking.

But away from all that, Jaguar still earns the pretty penny off his music because it strikes a chord with fans from across East Africa. From Uganda to Rwanda, to Burundi and Tanzania. And he has been revelling in all the attention his fame garners.

And another thing about Jaguar is that he enjoys his life to the fullest. After having stacked up the wealth that we can’t take with us, he goes out and uses it to make his life more fun check him out on that tip below:

Life Abroad: Former Miss Kenya Speaks of Her Struggle to Make Ends Meet by Not Gold-Digging as is the Popular Belief (PART II)

Here’s part 2 of Rachel’s story

I was back to square one and too embarrassed to go back to Transit TV with my tail between my legs to beg for my old job back. That pride thing again… One of my greatest vices. It got so bad (the depression) that my beautiful amazing mother had to come all the way from Kenya and my equally beautiful and amazing big sister had to come from Canada to whip me back into shape. I’d gained like 30 pounds too in my despair. They whisked me off to Arizona for a full month and that was the beginning of my healing. (Also there for me in Arizona was my beautiful friend. My sister from another Russian mother, Alena Egorina, who would sit with me and my family and give me the most encouraging words as I cried. I’m not normally a crier but jeez! At the time I was like the Niagara Falls. It was like I was constantly on PMS overload! See, she understood very well what I was going through. She lived in LA for a year too. In fact, I took over her lease in her apartment when I moved here because that was right about the time when she got fed up with LA and opted out. And she’s not even in the entertainment industry! We had both lived in Miami before where we’d met and become fast friends). The two people who have always loved me unconditionally were there for me. I thank God everyday for that. They soothed me back into reality. Reminded me who I am and where I’m from and that I am still capable. Wow. I’m crying now remembering this. Those two women saved my life! Thank God ever so much for them! That was September to October of last year by the way that this was happening (my mom and sis coming to my rescue). I shudder to think how far into that deep hole of depression I could have gone had it not been for them. To put things in perspective, I was deep in depression when I penned the Alisha Popat rant. Now, I still believe my sentiments were right and my opinion still stands but maybe this Rachel, who is no longer depressed, would have kept that opinion to herself rather than say it out loud. Sometimes it is perhaps best to keep valid- though controversial- opinions to ourselves. Anyway, this is to show that you never know what is going on in people’s lives even though their lives may seem glamorous from miles away and on social media. I literally thought it was over for me at that point. All the hard work and sacrifices, fighting hard to stay on the good and narrow and not sell my soul, balancing all that work with school… At the time, it felt like it was all for nought.

Fast forward to the present. I’m out of that place. I’m happy again and revamped. Going for my dreams even more fiercely than before. That is why I penned my latest song “Nguvu” (Strength). I love it because to me it signifies getting back up. (Watch the video on YouTube by the way. Yes. This is a plug, lol). Anyway, back to now. As I hustle to attend auditions and what not, I am EXTREMELY blessed to have stumbled upon a “bills job” that I absolutely LOVE! I work for a wonderful company that’s been around for over 2 decades called Closets By Design. I am an interior designer! I went through grueling training and I now go into clients homes and help them redesign and reorganize their homes. In this picture is some of my work. It is such a gratifying job! Turns out I really have a knack for it. It’s not for everyone but it suits me just fine. More than fine! It amazes me how much I love it each day. From the first day of training I knew that this was it for me. It comes with a flexible schedule (a Hollywood dream chaser’s dream), I never have to sit at any desk, bored out of my mind from 9-5, 5 days a week and it pays me well. Very well (for my standards at least ). I visit one to two homes a day sometimes for as little as 1 hour per home to over 6 hours! Mostly it’s an average of 4 hours a home though. I enjoy it so much that I never see time passing by. I go in, consult with the clients, hand design a beautiful space for them and then I’m on my jolly way. I work almost every day, including holidays and some Sundays but I look forward to each appointment. I design closets, garages, offices, pantries, wall beds, wall units and everything else except kitchens and bathrooms. Now the clients! What an interesting assortment! I service mostly high end areas like Beverly Hills, Pacific Palisades, Brentwood, Bel Air, etc but I also go everywhere else, which is why most selfies of mine are taken from my car. LOL! Always driving. I thought I got close to stars interviewing them on red carpets before, but now I have found myself in the homes of some of the world’s biggest stars redesigning their intimate spaces. What a blessing to be entrusted with something so personal! I love ALL my clients. I love to chat with them and get to know them. Especially my older clients who always have so many stories to inspire me.

I’m writing all this (yes, I know it’s another long one) to say, when it rains it pours but the rain has to stop some time. It may not seem so when you’re deep in a rut but I can promise you IT DOES. I hope this can inspire someone to look forward to brighter days. As for me, I’m still chasing my dreams. I’m still a TV host, singer and actress. I also go back to school for my third degree starting this fall. However, now I can be happy knowing that even if I never get to be among the 1% of the 1% that make it, at least I’ve found a “bills job” that I really wouldn’t mind doing for the rest of my life if I had to. Cheers to everyone fighting for their dreams out there and taking no short cuts! Like I said earlier, my Benzes and Rovers will come some day, but when they do, they will be MINE. Gotten from my own sweat and tears just the way my momma taught me. See why I get upset when people automatically assume that being a former Miss Kenya and model, I am automatically a gold digger? This girl has NEVER laid on her back to get anything from anyone. I say it again with pride and conviction and let anyone who would like to say otherwise provide receipts to prove it. It’s unfair to judge us all beauty pageant/ model girls so negatively but that’s a rant for another post, another day. Wait! I already did that one! Hahaha! Outspoken old me. This mouth shall land me in trouble one day!

Back to my declaration of driving expensive cars some day… I may need to sell a lot of closets or I may finally get a Hollywood “break” in my entertainment career but I’ll get there… It really doesn’t matter as long as I stay happy and far away from depression. I wonder if this explains to some of you why I have been making little changes lately like my new natural hair/ no weaves do? It’s all a part of my growth. Have a blessed inspired week everyone! PS: some evil people will try to bring you down and kick you while you’re down. They will try their best to dim your light but keep those who truly love you close and keep your eye on the prize. That prize, I’ve learned, is H-A-P-P-I-N-E-S-S. One of my friends once told me when I decided to move to LA that I’ll be just fine in this life because I’ve got the “hustle bone” (shout out to Dr. Maina in Miami). You’re damn right I do!

Larry madowo Exposes A TNA Aspirant Allegedly Using Inciting And Insulting Language Against the Luo Community (EVIDENCE)

I do not get involved in politics. But when I saw this, I was genuinely disgusted. When I read this tweet allegedly sent out from a TNA political aspirant’s twitter account already being investigated for hatespeech, I was left speechless. I am genuinely flabbergasted! How can anyone even excuse this nonsense? If indeed it is proven true?

Here’s the tale as told truly by Larry Madowo:

Gatundu South TNA aspirant Moses Kuria posts ‘offensive’ tweet. We’re covering this and more at 9pm on NTV Kenya

As they say, a picture is worth a thousand words.

What I am wondering is why a man can be allowed to make such hateful and insulting comments. To insult an entire people’s culture simply to further your political cause is cheap! It is callous and it is criminal! That is if the allegations are true ofcourse. It’s wrong for any “leader” to make such reckless statements especially after the ethnic issues flaring up in Coast province.

But then again, what do i know about politics? i keep myself above the muck! Afterall, cleanliness is next to godliness.

Anger And Confusion As Celebrity Couple Responds To Divorce And Miscarriage Reports

When I first read the story on Standard Digital, I couldn’t believe what was alleged. Apparently, top Kenyan video director Kevin Bosco Jr. who was only just recently married to femcee Petra was on the verge if he hadn’t already initiated the process of divorcing his still blushing bride. I was alarmed. What could have caused such a drastic turn of events? I had to find out just what was going on.

The facts that were given in the article I read indicated that Petra his wife had allegedly miscarried their unborn child and I had to call up the couple to confirm these stories. When I spoke to Kevin, he was chilled out. All he had to say was:

“(chuckling) Nah, everything is okay between us.”

I then called up Petra. She was livid! She was vexed that the media reports were false yet they were carried with such an air of confidence that most, even members of her family believed them. Yes, she is back in Mombasa with her family but everything is fine. She later texted me to apologize for having lost her temper and she had this to say:

I am sorry but I can’t talk about anything. I didn’t mean to insult you, I am a very emotional person and I’m trying to keep off media right now. It’s affecting my pregnancy alot. Please understand, I am out of entertainment so don’t call or text me again.

This is what I am made to understand from the horses mouth. So there you have it. There is no miscarriage (thankfully) and may there never be one. And the pair are still happily married.

Life Abroad: Former Miss Kenya Speaks of Her Struggle to Make Ends Meet by Not Gold-Digging as is the Popular Belief

Beauty queen and singer, Rachel Marete, has spoken for the first time about how she managed to penetrate the impossible and highly competitive Hollywood. There have been rumours floating around how she had to drop her pants to make ends meet in The States.

She says;

I wanna share with you, my dear Facebook friends, how I make my bread and butter. You see, for those of us who are courageous enough to pack our bags and leave home behind to join the rat race that is Hollywood, we come to realize very quickly that there’s millions of us already here and coming in daily. That means it’s very hard to make it here. Though most of us are very talented, the sad reality is that only 1% of 1% of us will make it. For that reason, they say every year that 1 million hopefuls come to Hollywood and that by the end of that year only one percent of that million remains and the cycle continues. Of the remaining 1% only 1% of us will get to see our names in the lights. Still for those of us bold enough to remain starving and dreaming here, the struggle is real! Not only do you have to chase your dreams, the famous American bills never stop coming in. Rent, insurance, phone bills, food, gas, etc then add on to that the expenses that come with chasing the dream: headshots, online submitting breakdown site fees, reels, etc (all before you catch the eye of any agent worth his weight and pull) plus time to do it all while still finding a way not to completely starve and be homeless.

A few lucky buggers in our midst come from rich families where daddy simply says something like, “well child, here is a million dollars! Go to Hollywood and follow your dreams! If that doesn’t work out, just come back and daddy will help find another job you like or make you CEO of the family business”. Sigh… At least that’s how I picture it. How we all wish we were them! Then, since this job attracts A LOT of good looking people, many choose to go the find me a sugar daddy or sugar momma to fund my dream chasing route (which is another rat race in itself around here). Unfortunately for those, like me, who are unwilling to sell our souls to get ahead, we have no choice but to juggle the dream chasing with full time jobs. That’s where the famous waitressing jobs of Hollywood come in! Guys, you will be surprised how competitive the waitress job market is around here! It’s a job fought for and actually hard to find! You have to be a highly qualified/ experienced one to get in to the right places where tips are big enough to pay bills and afford head shots. It’s funny how here, to be a waitress you actually have to pay your dues at crappy establishments first, sometimes for years, to get into the “big leagues”. Then when you finally do, you can get tips from stars who are empathetic and once were where you are (case in point, Brad Pitt was once one of the many waiters of Hollywood chasing dreams of stardom that made it out!). No sir/ madam. No one laughs at waiters here! Not only can they spit in your food if you piss them off, but they might also be the next George Clooney or Angela Basset!

Now this is why I value education. Thanks to mine, I haven’t had to be a waitress… yet (knock on wood). The challenge has always been to find the perfect “bills job” that you don’t absolutely hate but that also IS NOT a 9-5 because everyone knows most of the great auditions are on weekdays on those very same hours. It’s not unusual for us to go from job to job because of this. “Scheduling issues”, we call it. Well for me, I’ve been lucky to hold down good jobs. My favorite one, before my current one, was when I was an Account Executive for Transit TV (I acquired advertisers for the channel) and a news anchor for the station as well. It was perfect and also my first job in Hollywood. I had to give that up for an awesome opportunity at SKY TV where I got my own TV show; V-Style. I sold high end jewelry, watches and fashion over the air at bargain prices to my viewers and it broadcast live from LA to Europe. In between and during these two jobs I was also juggling side TV gigs wherever I could get them. Hey, build that resume! Anyway, back to the SKY TV job. This was it! I had made it to the big leagues!! It was only going to be higher and higher up from here. I could kiss the hustling struggle good bye… At least that’s what I thought… UNTIL MY SHOW GOT CANCELED SIX MONTHS LATER! Womp womp! I was devastated. I plunged deep into depression. Sad part is at first I wasn’t aware of what was happening. I just knew that when the sun came up, I did not want to get out of bed. Then there was also this new thing where when I got upset or worried, I’d run out of breath and struggle to breathe again. I came to find out that these were called, drum roll please, and panic attacks! Yes, I became one of those people. I always said before that since we do not even have a word for depression in African languages, it was just some thought up disease that crazy westerners had made up. I know better now. I was like “what’s the point? I’m never gonna make it!”. Again, not unusual at all in this tough, cold industry.

Since it’s inception in December 2012, Mdundo continues to make its value-added music distribution top priority and give artists and easy way to distribute music. This July Mdundo is paying out royalties for the 7th time in just 18 months and the service is distributing money to more than 3,000 East African artists.

Thiru Mungai, Head of Music at Mdundo.com, says, “Mdundo is still a small brand and young company. We are happy to see that artists support our transparent and honest approach to music distribution despite our small size and financial power. We have high hopes for the future and we hope to help artists pushing their music on global platforms as well and show the world how much good music we have here”.

In the past 6 months, Mdundo has begun various initiatives aimed at supporting the Kenyan artist. Initiatives such as the Mdundo Awards, an annual event that acknowledges the most downloaded artists; The Mdundo Lounge, a monthly event that gives artists an opportunity to network with each other and showcase their music and The Mdundo Workshop, a monthly workshop where industry players can discuss and share experiences.

CEO at Mdundo.com, Martin Nielsen, explains, “We are super pleased about the contentious growth the industry is facing. Currently more than 1% of all Kenyans with Internet phones are registered with Mdundo and we are seeing an increasing interest from abroad with more of 30% of our users located outside of Africa”.

Users can downloads limited music free of charge or subscribe for unlimited access the growing library. The service is available everywhere in the world and South Africa, United States and Europe are among the biggest markets.

Mdundo Co-Founder and Artist, Frasha says: Mdundo has come of age and as a start up the company is doing well and will continue to support it…I appreciate the hardwork by all the staff and wish that they continue with the same spirit

Mdundo have impressively 3,000 artists available on the service and the library is growing with 20% every month. An increasing number of artists from outside Kenya have started to join the platform where especially Tanzania is picking up with more than 200 artists and several songs on top 25.

What does an artist stand to gain when they join Mdundo.com?

Mdundo prides ourselves in being transparent. And lastly, unlike other digital distribution platforms, Mdundo pays out royalties to our artist on a quarterly basis based on downloads.  We are currently collecting artists metadata allowing us to partner with platforms like ITunes and increase our artists reach.
