EXCLUSIVE: Another Kenyan Joins the Flourishing Hollywood Film Industry. He Speaks to Ghafla! About His First Movie

Before Lupita happened (in a huge way) there were other illustrious Kenyans in Hollywood on the silver screen. And year in year out, the number keeps ballooning.

The latest to join the league of Kenyans in Hollywood is Gospel singer Silas Mwenda.

“Apart from doing Gospel music as I had told you, I ventured into acting too, and i was lucky to be selected to feature in an amazing film called “Love Lilly” which was shot in Denver Colorado, New Mexico and Los Angeles by Chesthut Films,” Silas exclusively tells Ghafla!

“Love Lilly” is a dramatic family film focusing more on issues affecting American families and Silas plays Mr. Gower, a troubled pharmacist.

Silas (C) in action

After successful screening in major theaters in downtown Denver Colorado and Downtown Los Angeles, California last week , “Love Lilly” film will be airing on Fox TV this fall.

“In addition to that, am proud to announce that “Love Lilly” has just been selected for the 2014 PARE LORENTZ INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL, a prestigious festival that will take place in New York City in mid September,” reveals Silas.

Silas is overwhelmed by the success of the movie and the positive reception it has got on American TV.

“It’s my first film ever but it’s so surprising how fast it has been picked by the major American film outlets. Personally am taking this as a great opportunity and God-given avenue as a Gospel artiste to pass His great message to people all over the world through film and touch people’s lives all over the world, something that been my great desire for long time.”

He adds, “It’s not about money or fame but it’s all about God. It’s a ministry as far as am concerned. Am so grateful to God and my fans for all their support. Thank you so much.”

Husband Material? This is Bien’s Of Sauti Sol’s Other Talent (Photo)

The words ‘talented,’  ‘iconic,’ and ‘celebrated’ are words that are nowadays being uncontrollably dished out to everyone who can belt out a lyric or twerk. But, when describing Afro Pop Band Sauti Sol, each word rings true.

Whether they are bringing sexy back with Nishike or turning us into a sentimental mess with ‘Still The One’ or making us shake our waists with ‘Sura Yako’ ,this musicial always bring it.
But as I have come to realize, they are gifted in other areas, Chimano in fashion, Polycarp and Delvin in musical production and Bien’s other talent is cooking! And not that gross #cookingforbae cum struggle food sh**, food that actually looks good and I presume, tastes good.

Bien shared this photo of him cooking for his friends with the following caption :

Feels so good to have these two @kuithefish @afro_urbanite over for dinner. #friendship #boyfriendfabric #husbandmaterial #mencancook #Shephardspie #theyreallyloveit.

Here Is The One Secret About Octopizzo’s Wife That No One Ever Knew! (PHOTO)

Octopizzo’s wife is undoubtedly a beauty. And that is a fact that Octopizzo himself is always celebrating. The couple also welcomed their daughter Zara to the world a few months ago and this seems to have redoubled Octo’s hustle as the lad has been working round the clock trying to make money for his family to enjoy and live comfortably off of.

But the one thing most people did not know about Octopizzo’s wife, she has a secret. A rather interesting secret at that. Allow me to tell you. Nay, they say a picture is worth a thousand words aye? Then let the photo speak for itself:

She was a billboard model. Clearly the lad Octo has game for the days!

Vera Sidika Told off by Gospel Singer

Controversies come easy to Vera Sidika as she rocks the showbiz scene with her attitude, affairs, nude photos and personal life.

Not surprising at all because with her “don’t care” attitude, she does whatever she pleases with her life. And with everything she does with her life she makes news and leaves tongues wagging.

On Monday, Gospel singer, Kimdanny reprimanded the video vixen for being a “bad influence”. Here’s what he had to say;

“It’s sad Vera Sidika has much influence on girls in Kenya and far and wide. At the same time I feel happy for her success in her “career”.

In my view, she is bad influence. It’s really sad how young girls are influenced by the behaviour she exhibits on social media. While everyone is free to do what they want to do with their bodies, in this day and age, no one has a right to influence people or the society negatively. It’s in our African culture that we are decent.

Kimdanny_2.jpg

Kimdanny

My advice to our young girls is follow Lupita Nyong’o’s footsteps. She is famous in her own right and also a true African woman.

I have witnessed many college and university students blindly follow Vera’s actions and I felt the urge to advice.

BUT AM NOT PERFECT AS WELL.”

Check Out The Strange Presents That Stella Mwangi Got During An Interview

Kenyan born, Norway bred, internationally recognized and notoriously talented, Stella Mwangi is just simply one of a kind.

She has not only managed to stay relevant in a male dominated industry but has produced more hits than most rappers in the industry .The lass was recently interviewed by Hapa Kule News during their ‘Juu Ya Mawe ’ segment and I can declare that this is without a doubt one of the most entertaining interviews I have ever had the pleasure of watching .Especially the part where Stella Mwangi gets an ‘African Piggy Bank’ and  a debe full of makaa (Charcoal)

Ghafla Poll: Do You Think It’s Time For The Government To Censor Radio?

There is a debate that has been raging in Kenya for over a minute with two very vociferous and almost antagonistic sides on either side. The debate of which I speak is whether or not Kenya should censor the radio. Proponents for censorship always bring up Maina and King’ang’i in the morning which the feel discusses subject matter that is too mature for it’s time slot -early in the morning.

For me all this means is that Maina Kageni has a hold on his audience -so much so that they always talk about him even when he isn’t around. That is one of the reasons why advertising on his show is so damn expensive!

Maina-Kageni.jpg

After watching the debate that raged on NTV which I felt could have been better moderated, I have to ask what you as the Ghafla reader think. Is radio too much these days? Afterall, Maina and King’ang’i discuss things that pertain to marriage and sex at a time when children are going to school.
Or is this argument just hogwash? A business is a business and expecting profitability like the profitability shown by Maina and Kinga’ang’i in the morning (not to mention the popularity) is all that matters -besides, they are doing us a favour by discussing marital issues that most of us are facing anyway -and we’re too scared to ‘fess up?

Have your say below on whether you feel the relevant government bodies need to censor Kenyan radio:

Mama Kayai Comes Out Attacking Lupita Nyongo For Her Nude Scene!

Mama Kayai is a revered Kenyan actress who would pretty much amount to what would be considered to a veteran of the acting industry having done it for many a decade and still managing to ignite the millions of audiences that catch her every time she’s on “Vitimbi”. And while at the Kalasha Awards -an award ceremony that honours actors and actresses who have excelled at their trade, she was asked some questions on the red carpet.

And not one to hold back her opinions -you have to love “real” people- she talked frankly about Lupita Nyong’o’s part in the critically acclaimed movie “12 Years A Slave” and unlike most of her (Lupita’s) Kenyan and indeed African counterparts, she had nothing positive to say.

She felt the actress who won Africa’s first Oscar, messed up by playing the role which had her “exposed”. She played a part that was immoral in the African context because she was in a scene that had her naked.

And as for Kenya’s “1st sex comedy”, she had this to say,

I have watched House of Lungula and I don’t think it is worthy the hype. I mean, if you can’t watch the comedy with your family, then that means it is indecent.

KTN Highlight A Mhindi Girl Married To A Luhya Living In The Village And The Video Sends Kenyans On Twitter Wild (VIDEO)

Personally, I have no idea why this is a huge deal. Actually, that is not true. This rarely -if ever- happens. Kenya’s Indians aren’t known to mingle with the indigenous Kenyans and when that happens, it is usually on an employer-employee basis. The thing about Kenya is that the race relations are an open secret that everyone knows and talks about -often times in a disparaging manner but to keep politically correct I cannot get into.

So when KTN carried a story about a Luhya who is not only married to a Kenyan Indian but has moved back to his village of origin with her, they caused quite a stir. Personally, the only thing I am interested in (also not true but keeping in line with political correctness) is why anyone would trade the comforts of city life for the village. Guess I will have to ask my mummy that the next time I see her.

Still, for the romantics in our midst, this is a true testament to the adage that love knows no bounds but I cannot say I understand this. This is truly beyond my scope of understanding but I do wish the couple well. Anyway, check out the KTN report below:

Is This Nick Mutuma’s New Hot Girlfriend? (Photo)

As you are all aware,Nick Mutuma  and his  beautiful slender girlfriend and model Bridget Shighadi called it quits a while ago.

The former couple did not reveal what ended their relationship, but Bridget alluded to some ‘issues’ while Nick said that their break-up was amicable. They decided to keep their break-up as private as possible giving scanty details about what led to their relationship’s demise.

A few month’s later,I came across a picture of Nick with yet another gorgeous lass in his arms.

We  inquired who the gorgeous lass from Nick Mutuma who unfortunately declined to comment. And the mystery continues….is this Nick’s new catch?Only time will tell

Shaffie Weru And Ciku Muiruri Put On The Spot On NTV Over “Lack Of Ethics” (VIDEO)

Shaffie Weru is one of the most popular radio personalities around and with great reason. The lad has one of the most popular show in his time slot -last I checked, second only to Mbusi on Radio Jambo. Ciku Muiruri also has a very popular show for her timeslot. The issue they were invited to NTV to discuss was ethics -or lack thereof- on mainstream radio.

We all know that the most popular radio show in Kenya would be Maina and King’ang’i in the morning aye? And their subject matter has raised eyebrows for many a year yet it is clearly what Kenyans want to hear -hypocrisy. I do not know why Maina Kageni wasn’t invited and if he was, why he couldn’t make it but I do know that Shaffie and Ciku were walking into the lion’s den. Whether they knew it or not is a different issue altogether.

PRESS_PANEL_-_SHAFFIE_AND_CIKU_GRILLED.jpg

From the onset, the NTV moderator, Mark Masai, had ganged up against them and sided with Fred Obachi Machoka and Lorna Irungu. First off, I realized the similarities in arguments that were used against the Radio Africa team have also been used time and again against Ghafla but that is neither here nor there.

However, I have to say that Ciku Muiruri’s argument was the most sensible and practical. She argues that Maina and King’amg’i in the morning cannot be shifted to evening because Classic FM is a business and as such the motto of any business is, “maximize profits, minimize operation costs”. Maina and King’ang’i are making money so the system works.

Lorna Irungu went off on a tangent arguing about whether or not a switch is possibly proffering the argument that,

Who says the late night shows cannot be profitable.

Wait, what? Check the KARF report.

One thing is stands, this was a fiesty debate that you just have to watch for yourself to believe:

30th July 2014: Ten Things You Need To Know This Morning

Today, why don’t we start things a little differently. Today, I want to start with a mantra that has been reverberating within me in the recent past:

If you can keep your head when all about you, are losing theirs& blaming it on you,
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too;
If you can wait& not be tired by waiting,
Or being lied about don’t deal in lies,
Or being hated, don’t give way to hating,
And yet don’t look too good nor talk too wise:

If you can dream -and not make dreams your master;
If you can think -and not make thoughts your aim;
If you can meet with triumph& disaster
And treat those two impostors just the same:

If you can bear to hear the truth you’ve spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to broken,
And stoop &build ’em up with worn tools:
If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it on a turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, &start again at your beginnings
And never breathe a word about your loss

If you can force your heart &nerve &sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the will which says to them “Hold on!”

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with Kings -nor lose the common touch, if neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you,
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds worth of distance run,
Yours is the earth &everything that’s in it,
And -which is more- you’ll be a man, my son! -Rudyard Kipling

Firebrand Blogger Dikembe Disembe Released From Remand

Last Friday, blogger Seth Odongo was charged with hate speech in a Nairobi court and detained at the Industrial Area Prison after he failed to raise the exorbitant Ksh5 million bond or Ksh 2 million cash bail.

Seth who goes by the moniker Dikembe Disembe and blogs on Kenya Today, was accused of inciting ethnic emotions through his Facebook account. He allegedly posted a message inciting “the people of Lamu” to “remove the African colonialists”  from their lands.

After spending the weekend behind bars and receiving guests, a Nairobi Court has now revised his cash Disembe to Sh500,000 down from the initial Sh2 million.

This follows an application by a team of lawyers led by James Orengo who convinced the magistrate that the earlier amount was too high for the blogger.

Alai_Dikembe.jpg

Senior Principal Magistrate Anna Ndungu alternatively allowed Odongo to post a Sh2 million surety bond from the initial Sh5 million.

The case will now be mentioned on August 8.

Vicious Tussle between Candy n Candy & Athletics Body over Marathon Event with Major Artistes

As you all know by now, Candy n Candy Records is at an advanced stage of organizing a marathon race that aims at promoting peace in the entire East African region.

Last Friday however, Athletics Kenya (AK) South Rift Valley branch distanced itself from the planned marathon race planned for Naivasha next month.

According to the body’s branch chairman, John Wachira, they haven’t sanctioned the Great East African Community Marathon Championships to be held on August 8th in Naivasha. He further warned athletes and officials against taking part in unsanctioned races threatening to discipline those who go against the directive.

Candy_article.jpg

In a quick rejoinder earlier today, the record label justified the reason behind the organization of the marathon saying;

“The Great East Africa Community Marathon is a peace initiative for the people by the people and solely driven towards bringing peace peace within our communities. Kenya is a beautiful country and we should all protect and guard our peace fearlessly. This being a community marathon the participants will be the ordinary Mwananchi regardless of your athletic prowess since the aim of the event is to bring the community together.

Our statement is not political statement but a peace statement which involves everyone regardless of gender ,age, political inclination, religion or region because at the end of the day we are all Kenyans and Kenya is bigger than any individual. The event has many aspects some of which include a Kids Marathon which will see children of all ages taking part in their own marathon and other activities which will teach them unity and acceptance of each other despite their differences. The event recognizes that children are the future generation.

Our young people who are mostly used to carry out violent acts will have a chance to be part  of an event that will positively  encourage them to be peace Ambassadors and talk about challenges they face as young people and come up with lasting solutions. The Great East Africa Community Marathon and peace concert is an initiative that will build a stronger Kenya for years to come.”

Meet The New Star Giving Established Artistes a Run For Their Money

Kenyan music industry is rapidly growing and according to D.O.M “Older local artist should go international already!” I agree with her, they should now compete internationally and let the hardworking upcoming artistes compete internally.

D.O.M  (definition of music) is a rap artist who started rapping at the WAPI battles at Sarakasi Dome. She then continued with rap battles and was the only girl among the finalist at the Nokia doesn’t break the beat competition. She has featured in cooler gangs and octopizzo’s cyphers. She released her video late last year and now she brings in her latest single that drooped a week ago on mdundo. The track has since maintained a top 5 position and is receiving a good response. She talks of men who hit on women, trying to act like they have money but they really don’t. Explains what she wants and tells the guy to take it or leave it. She has done interviews on HOT 96 and Hit 91.5 FM where her songs are playing amongst other radio stations

Stella Mwangi And Chidinma’s New Song Leaks

What happens when the best from the West meets the best from the East? Magic of course.

And ‘Hold On’ a new song by Chidinma and Stella Mwangi is nothing short of magical. The beat really sounds beautiful, Chidinma vocals are impressive and Stella Mwangi does not disappoint either.

Shove Off Nollywood! Kenyan Films Headed for the Stars

Despite Kenya having over 16m active media consumers, film makers are struggling to make inroads into the local market, trailing rivals telanovelas, Nollywood and Hollywood, in what industry players blame on lack of specialization of roles, and an absence of audience research.

However, partnerships with incoming TV channels are now beginning to fuel Kenya’s own film industry. One such partnership, between Kijiji and Zuku, has delivered a world class Kenyan production, Groove Theory, which has earned 4 nominations in this year’s Kalasha Film and TV Awards, after its first series, which premiered in November 2013.

“The show was a co-production, Kijiji Entertainment provided content, while Zuku distributed and marketed the show,” said Kanjii Mbugua the CEO of Kijiji Entertainment and producer of Groove Theory, which is the first musical series in Kenya.

Groove_Theory_2_.jpg

Kijiji, which is about to commence filming of the second series of the show, partnered with Zuku to make the musical show, after Zuku had run content from Kijiji’s industry leading Village Musical – a series of theatre musicals staged every Easter and Christmas now in its 6th year of production.

The decision to now shoot a second series of Groove Theory followed from the show’s immediate success, and the affirmation that both parties shared the same production qualities and standards. Zuku has been keen to partner with local production companies to produce local content that is of high standard and appreciated by the local viewers.

Currently, Africa remains the world’s least developed broadcast market. With a population of more than 525m viewers, it constitutes a great opportunity for growth, with proven demand for quality content, according to the African Broadcast Network.

Celina Of Mother-In-Law On Vera Sidika’s New Implants

Last Wednesday morning, we all woke up to pictures of Vera Sidika’s boob job plastered all over social media.

This new move by Vera was met with shock and fury but not like the kind her skin lightening procedure brought out.

Anyhow, Kenyan celebrities have been awfully quite about her new cup size but Catherine Kamau the cutie from Mother-In-Law shared her opinion on the whole saga.

This is what she said “Different Strokes for different folks. I think that’s her body that’s her business that’s her choice. I hope she won’t regret it in future but it’s her life what can we say. But my message to younger girls you are beautiful the way you are .”

Forget The Implants And Bleaching. Vera Sidika Has Actual Talent! (Photos)

When she is not gallivanting around the globe or finding a new way to send us into complete unadulterated outrage, Vera actually settles down to pursue her talent.

Painting. Yes, yes, there is more to Vera than the bodacious ta-tas or enviable derrière. The lass recently showed us on social media that there is more to her than her looks.

She showcased her art on Facebook with the following pictures and their respective captions:

Final work of my landscape painting. I know y’all never knew I could paint

Well, been doing this since I first held a pencil in kindergarten.

My parents made sure I went to an Art school in high school. Star of the Sea was one the best schools in Mombasa that had Art & Design. (Also won art trophies for the school) and got to Uni all I wanted to do was Design. Or an Art course because that’s where my heart belongs!!!

I eat, breath, sleep and wake up to Art (any form of art, be it music, cooking, dancing, u name it!)

There are artists out there and most times we fail to appreciate them. People should give them a chance and platform to express themselves in the society. Coz trust me, going to a medical or law school entails you having been employed before you can set up your own firm. An Artist is their own BOSS. You don’t need employment and with the gift you can always find means to provide for yourself and family.

LET’S LEARN TO APPRECIATE EACH OTHERS GIFTS AND TALENTS.

Much Love

Ghafla Exclusive: Tichi Nyasani Allegedly “Fired” For Refusing To Have Sex With K24 Bosses

When I caught wind of this story, I knew I had to go about it carefully because of it’s sensitive nature. What pray tell am I rumbling about? Well, a week or so ago, a staff member at K24 bravely reached out to me about what she alleges is the rot at K24. She had a couple of powerful allegation to drop.

As soon as I received all the information, I reached out to K24’s management and the man I spoke to is one Peter Opondo. I spoke to him regarding the matter. Sadly, I couldn’t get any statement from the man as my call was either terminated or the call was dropped. But I did manage to get a quote from the man on the matter.

When I called and informed him of who I was (God’s Chosen Blogger) and of my reason for calling, this is what he had to say:

What is the call pertaining to? So who was mentioned? Who gave you this information?

<Peter Opondo>

I never reveal my sources. Anyway, this is what I was told:

K24 has recently poached Ian Fernandes and Shirleen Samat to come ‘clean’ the mess at Mediamax. The big question is who created the mess? I don’t want to dwell on that at the moment but shed some light on the kind of talent K24 poached and dumped-thus killing their careers.I want also to shed light on why some of the best employees were fired/under what circumstances.
Tichi Nyasani
She was the darling of viewers and could take Lililian Muli – citizen tv head-on but she was ‘fired’ idefinately for not releasing ‘her’ goods to a senior manager. Would you compare her to Belinda Obura?
Anne Ngugi
Another great talent in Swahili features. However, she collided with ‘influential’ Belinda on several occasions and thus had to part ways with the station.
Eustas Kathurima
One of the best cameramen but the station could not take him to re-hab for his drinking problems.
John Mwendwa
One of the best minds in the newsroom but was a threat to Peter Opondo who had to create space for himself to enable Ian to be hired.
David Mbatia
The best Producer/Director who single handedly brought K24 to life. He could not see eye-to-eye with Peter Opondo who felt threatened by his wit and charisma. David had sealed ‘holes’ where gullible producers and administration was eating from.He had once notified management over unpaid commercials shows airing on the station.
Franklin
The best sales manager but was fought by his own juniours coz of his stand.
In a nutshell, K24 is run ‘mafia’ style where you don’t two the line..they gang up and you are fired by a toothless HR Manager. This is the only media house where business of supplies is done by seniour staff e.g. Commercial Agencies transact business with the station but are run by Victoria, Chebet and Charity (who are employees); Programmes are supplied by staff producers/managers e.g. Young Rich-K24 Programmes Manager, Couples Show – K24 Peter Opondo who is the ‘ghost’ executive producers.
K24 is a business hub for employees from IT to Office supplies.

I can give you more insight into the happenings now as the station prepares to fire more people end of July.

So as you can see, there seems to be a crisis of sorts at the media house owned by the president of Kenya. I reiterate, when I spoke to Peter Opondo, this is what he had to say during our short phonecall:

What is the call pertaining to? So who was mentioned? Who gave you this information?

My efforts to reach Tishi Nyasani have thus far been futile but I will keep you posted as more developments arise. And once again, Tichi Nyasani allegedly turned down the manager and is “suffering” for it.

‘Awinja’ Named Best Dressed At Kalasha Awards. Here Is Her Winning Outfit (Photos)

This year’s Kalasha awards saw celebrities pick out their best tuxedos, bring out their best hair and step out in their prettiest frocks.

I was IMPRESSED; no more jeans on the red carpet, Kenyan celebrities really went all  out. Celina from mother-in-law and her co-actress Olive also from the same show were among those rocking the red carpet impressively but Jacky Vike popularly called Awinja really stole the show.

Jackie really brought sexy back at the Kalasha awards when she flaunted her well-toned back in a flirty frock on the red carpet.
The ‘Papa Shirandula’ star looked gorgeous in a blue floor-length dress with peplum details at the back and even Citizen TV’s Fashion Watch Panel could not help but marvel at how fantastic she looked.

Check out Jackie in all her awesomeness
