Correction:Janet Otieno ft Shusho (Napokea Kwako) Won Collabo of the Year Mwafaka Awards

This is a correction to the article posted on Monday morning for the 2014 Mwafaka awards winners. We do apologize for the misinformation. The list posted wasn’t official, since the organizers themselves didn’t and haven’t even  posted an official list yet.

The above award went to Janet Otieno for their song “Napokea Kwako” featuring Tanzanian Christina Susho and not Size 8 and Willy Paul as earlier indicated.

Meanwhile Janet is set to release a new track “Heshima” tomorrow, be sure to check it out when it comes out.

Just Like Obama, 50 Cent and Oprah, Larry Madowo and TerryAnne Chebet Challenged To Get Wet on TV

If you are an ardent user of social media you have spotted this trend: The “Ice Bucket Challenge.”

You have watched millions of people accept the Ice Bucket Challenge before pouring a bucket of water with ice over their heads.

It’s then followed by the participant challenging other people to do the same. But unlike twerking, planking, selfies and groundies, this trend serves a bigger purpose than entertainment; it is for a good cause.

The Ice bucket challenge was started to spread ALS awareness and raise money for research and patient services for people suffering from ALS.Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) is a motor neuron disease which causes difficulty in speaking, swallowing, breathing and causes muscle spasms.

If you don’t dump a bucket of cold ice water over your head you donate 100 dollars to the ALS Association in the United States.

Watch Sam Gichuru from Nailab challenge Larry Madowo, Juliani and TerryAnne Chebet  to the Ice Bucket Challenge

Churchill Takes CNN To His Rural home

2014 is turning out to be an exciting year for Kenya’s ‘king of comedy’, Daniel ‘Churchill’ Ndambuki, who takes to the international stage this Friday on CNN International’s ‘African Voices’.

Daniel Ndambuki, popularly known as ‘Churchill’, explains to CNN how he got his stage name, and introduces viewers to his rural school, explaining why he played ‘the devil’ in his first acting role.

Welcome to Mumbuni Secondary School… this is where we started acting… I was never the main actor by the way, I was always supporting…I don’t know if it’s because they could not see me because of my colour. So the biggest part I was given was the devil that is the role I played…,” Churchill explains.

At the very start of his career, Daniel was seen performing by Wahome Mutahi, the beloved Kenyan humourist- who wrote the ‘Whispers’ column on Sunday Nation. Mutahi gave Ndambuki the stage name Churchill, which was in line with his style of nicknaming artists after famous world leaders.

“My first joke…they switched off the mic. It was so boring to even myself…they relegated me to face painting, so I ended up face painting and making jokes to the kids and at some point I had to pinch them because the parents were watching. ‘If you don’t laugh, look at me with a smile if you don’t laugh’… it was crazy,” he explains.

He reveals to ‘African Voices’ that American actor and comedian, Steve  Harvey, is his role model and explains that the Churchill academy is aiming to produce a Chris Rock or a Steve Harvey in the next five years.

Daniel discovered a special place not far from his childhood home, The Machakos People’s Park, where he goes to unwind. “What amazes me about this place… we used to come and hunt rabbits, there were so many snakes around here. Now, it’s a whole different place. It is so relaxing especially after all those noises, in Nairobi, big city, you want somewhere where you can have a meeting with yourself,” he says.

Daniel ‘Churchill’ Ndambuki’s story will air on CNN International’s ‘African Voices’ on Friday, 22 August at 1030; with repeat broadcasting on the following days:

Saturday          1730

Sunday   0530, 1100 and 2030

Monday           1230 and 1730

Tuesday           0730

Tune in to CNN on DStv Channel 401.

Nick Odhiambo makes Fun Of IG Kimaiyo’s Accent

Someone once told me that the older generation that consists of our parents generally has accents due to the fact that more emphasis was put on knowing the English language, rather than ensuring your English was devoid of mother-tongue influence.

And that is why you will notice that a large number of our folks are fluent in English but the accent is wanting. This also applies to a large number of politicians and other public figures among them IG Kiamiyo.

Nick Odhiambo had this to say about Kimaiyo’s accent:

odhiambo_nick.png
dont you just love kimaiyos speeches, i bet his teachers used to make him read in english class to entertain the rest of the class..” we syant allaw bibo in tis glass two love loud’ …yaani “we wont allow people in this class to laugh loud!!!! kujibamba…

‘Secular Gospel’ is Gaining Traction; Here is The Logic Behind It

The radical change in gospel music has left many to wonder whether abandoning the ancient norm of just praising and worshiping was right. Many of the music that are said to be gospel will leave the old generation wonder whether the so called dot com era are completely losing it.

When Mr. Googz released his song Gospel Celebrity many gospel artistes got furious with him thinking it was an attack on them. In his lyrics; Googz sang: it’s a shame most singers are joking, taking up this thing to make money and floss it that’s the reason why the world is talking is the boy born again, where does he fall in stop singing coz you’re messing it please if you know you’re not singing fi di king then please cease for your wisdom is foolish please Jesus got a place for dem foolish kids, say tell dem praise him toda, me tell dem straight stop entertaining , tell dem singer, sing for Jesus. (Part of Mr. Googz lyrics) The singer was trying to pass a message across warning those foxes wearing sheep’s wool.

Well today, it is much harder to differentiate the thin line between gospel and secular music. In some instance, the scenes in the claimed gospel music are quite familiar to scenes in secular music videos and without someone telling you (mostly being show presenters) it is very difficult even to tell whether the song is gospel or secular henceforth it is also difficult to determine the message in those songs. One has to admit that there is just too much flossing in gospel music nowadays. It seems these artistes have over emphasized in making their music look good than actually illuminating the message that the songs convey. This kind of gospel songs are on the rise and even secular artistes are turning back in their numbers to join the club.

The thing about this kind of gospel of today is that it is does not appeal to the older generation. The logic behind a change in style is so that the music appeals to younger generation. The question one should rather ask is whether to change the gospel to suit the youths or the youths to change so that they walk in light? Like they say it; everyone has a free choice and every choice has a consequence so there is no need to get judgmental, it is just an opinion and everyone is entitled to one.

Pendo Shakes Her Money Makers To Blaqy’s ‘Money Maker’

It was the official dance of 2013,but it seems the dance which involves twisting and jerking of the hips and behind  is still alive and widespread.

It has survived Miley Cyrus (who almost put the dance to death) and became more than a passing internet fad.Do not be fooled by how easy many twerkers make it look. it is actually a difficult  dance and requires skilled people to perform it much like the belly dance.

Twerking has even become trendier due to the fact that science backs up the dance. Dr Mehmet Oz says that twerking has mental health so learning twerking will improve your cognition and memory.

Other health benefits include shaping and strengthening your behind, thighs, lower back and toning your abs. You may frown upon socialites twerking but science backs them up and they are probably healthier than most of us.

Pendo released a video doing the dance with Blaqy’s Money Maker playing in the background.

Classic 105 FM’s Debate Arouses a Fierce Reaction From Kenyan Men

Most men would definitely love their role boldly highlighted, understood and respected in marriage; at least that was the opinion of majority of the male callers who were participating on Classic 105 discussion.

“He cooks, he irons three times a week, he puts the clothes out to dry. They share responsibilities.” These were the words that made Kenyan men aggressively mad and flooded Maina Kageni and Mwalimu King’ang’I with calls to air their frustrations. Most of the men were easy pissed off by the idea of executing ‘feminine related chores’. Just like usual; Maina loved it when men got annoyed at the idea while Mwalimu seemed to be in support of the men.

The whole conversation ended with the conclusion of Maina and Mwalimu’s radio show but it seemed men still wanted to get something off their chests thus took on to Twitter on hush tag #MITM to continue airing their frustrations. It is hard to see men shed tears but if the conversation on #MITM is anything to go by; then I think men are vehemently weeping.

Nick Mutuma Inches Closer To Diamond Platnumz’ Ex .This Is Too Hot! (Photos)

I like to convince myself that I’m impervious to good looking men but I have to admit Nick Mutuma’s new look would even the ‘lesbianest ‘of lesbian waver. True story.

If you think he looked good on ‘Shuga’ then you should be on the lookout for his appearance in Jokate Mwegelo’s new video. For those who do not know Jokate, she is a Tanzanian beauty that  once dated Diamond Platnumz and even had a tiff with Wema Sepetu (Diamond’s on and off girlfriend)over it .Jokate and Wema have as we speak resolved their issues like grown women.

Bonoko Cancels His Wedding After Catching His Fiance Cheating!

Bonoko. Not a name I can say I have heard in the recent past and it’s sad that when he pops up in my radar it’s because of something as sad as this. See, thing is, Bonoko has had to call off his impoending wedding after he caught his fiance cheating on him.

Word has it that Bonoko found out that his lady love had been cheating way before he caught her courtesy of his friends whom he says had been telling him they had seen her with an older gentleman but he was too drunk inlove to see the truth.

It took a rather sad turn of events for his eyes to finally open up to the truth and that was when he decided to call off the relationship.
According to sources at Ghetto radio, lad found his fiance canoodling with the older gentleman in a popular night club. When he saw her indiscretions with his own eyes, he called off the impending nuptials.

As if that isn’t bad enough, he says in retrospect, he should have suspected something as the lass would come home and go straight to the bathroom to take a shower:

“Alikuwa ancome home late na immediately anarush tu kwa bafu kuoga ni kama anafanya kazi kwa mjengo.”

Kris Eeh Baba Lands a New Job at The Matatu Industry

He is probably going to have one of the most difficult job in the country; dealing with matatu drivers and touts for a good course.

In case you are wondering what Kris is up to; well the gospel artiste has been appointed the brand ambassador for One Touch One Life Organization; a job that will see him rally Embassava Sacco’s drivers and touts to join his effort to care for accident victims and also sensitize them on the importance of road safety. Kris’ campaign will kick off as from the 30th of this month and together with the drivers and touts he will visit Kenyatta National Hospital accident wing to give hope and donate accident equipment.

It is actually a good trend seeing some of our celebrities going the charity way as a positive deed can always be emulated; being in the limelight is not simply for personal glory but also impacting positively on the less fortunate/ needy in the society.

Check Out Images From Victoria Kimanis’s Chocolate Factory Party at Skylux

It starting to seem that our female artists are giving up on secular music, since there are few who are actually consistent and are doing it right. Among the few who are doing better, you cannot forget to mention Chocolate City’s Victoria Kimani who last week on Friday hosted the “Chocolate Factory” which took place at Skylux. Will Ebola Factor Into This Year’s Big Brother House?

Before we even start, please allow me to share a little something about Ebola:

The Ebola viral disease is a severe disease which affects humans and other primates, and is a form of viral haemorrhagic disease. Once the virus infects a person, it is transmissible between people through bodily fluids.

The disease derives the name from the Ebola River in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), which was near the site of one of the first outbreaks. The virus was first reported in 1976 and outbreaks have periodically occurred.

These outbreaks have tended to occur in remote villages close to tropical rainforests in Central Africa. However, the largest ever recorded outbreak is currently underway in three countries in West Africa: Guinea, Liberia, Sierra Leone and Nigeria Certain bats living in tropical African forests are thought to be the natural hosts of the disease. The proposed chain of events is: bat droppings are eaten by terrestrial animals; the animals die, and then their carcasses are handled by a human. The virus does not only pose a risk to humans: approximately one third of gorillas in protected areas have perished, according to the WHO.

The Ebola virus is not airborne, not in water or food, so people would have to come into contact with the bodily fluids of an infected person.

These include: blood, sweat, vomit, urine, saliva or semen. Ebola can’t be spread like flu through contact or breathing in the same air. This makes the risk of a travelers contracting Ebola is very low in the absence of direct contact with the blood or body fluids of an infected person or animal.

Now that that pesky bit is out of the way, let us get down to it. There has been alot of pandemonium in the mainstream Kenyan media with everyone asking about screening West Africans for Ebola -damn near turning the international incident into a reason to humiliate and dehumanize West Africans. But what will happen at Big Brother? What will happen seeing as the house will have participants from Nigeria, Ghana and Sierra Leone?

Well, they will have been vetted and screened.

I will show you the dance of my people.

Then allow me to reiterate it in a plain enough manner for even a halfwit to understand, the participants from all over Africa will have been screened for not just Ebola but any other disease. So I guess we are done here huh?

Now punch yourself for thinking from such a narrow perspective!

Check Out Nick Mutuma’s Awesome New German Machine (PHOTO)

Nick Mutuma seems to have been doing exceptionally well. And that is down to his hassle and hardwork. The lad has been galavanting all around Africa to that end with his co-host Sarah Hassan and now he is reaping the benefits of the sweat.

Lad has been getting around in a Vits but he has upgraded to a sturdy German made automobile and you know what they say about German vehicles aye? Well all that precision is now infused into his ride of choice.

And why not celebrate this? I ask this question to all the haters and naysayers out there who have been mumbling under their breathe about such tales which unless tall are quite fine by me. The lad pnow knows a thing or two about driving what many Kenyans would consider a luxury vehicle -well, not me but most.

And that is good stuff! Showing that Kenya’s showbiz industry has room for growth even if at a micro level.

Twitter Wars; #Kenyanisms Topples The Much Dreaded #KOT

Call it the bandwagon capital of Twitter; these are probably the hotspot where you will find majority of Kenyans talking over the social media.

#KOT (Kenyans on Twitter) is well known for ‘bullying’ anyone who dares cross their path and has henceforth received such a huge following among Kenyan Twitter users. At some point, #KOT was always featuring among Twitter’s most trending items.

This week however, #Kenyanisms seems to be the one gaining much traction on Twitter and has maintained a top spot over the famed #KOT. Unlike #KOT which is better known as the judicial wing for mashing online justice, #Kenyanisms seem to be taking a different dimension; emphasizing on sharing all those funny pictures and posts that make one to crack their ribs.

You can find all those seriously funny stuff on #Kenyanisms if you want all the humor about Kenyan things; remember a laugh a day keeps the doctor away.

Top Music Producer Rubbishes Conning Allegation

Richie-G the owner of ATL entertainment has denied claims by Deejay El Dinero who was alleging that the producer was conning artistes and that the recording label was not up to the standard it claimes.

The furious CEO noted that Deejay El Dinero’s claim was a mere malevolence bound to target his music business and tarnish the career he worked hard to build. Richie-G clearly stated that he has worked with reputable acclaimed artistes and he is not a con man by any means.

Well Ghafla only reports whatever happens, no taking side and if the allegation was not true then shame on the accuser; anyway every angle of the story has been illuminated, the plaintiff and the defendant must now just iron out their issues and the truth be told.

Gospel Singer Ringtone Teaches Willy Paul/Bahati a Thing About Bongo

Giving their songs a tune of the Bongo flavor has been a thing for Willy Paul and Bahati; but singer Ringtone newest song seem to be sending a mixed signal to the latter that he too may be wanting a piece of this genre as well.

Gospel competition may be good because at the end of the day they are all spreading the word, at least that is a simple logic by the audience. But have you ever thought that there might be more to that other than just spreading the gospel? Well let me not be judgmental but there is one thing that has really caught my attention. Willy Paul and Bahati have specifically dominated the gospel scenery this year; releasing hit songs and scooping awards after another. The common thing they share is their style of incorporating bongo tune in their songs.

Well Ringtone too has learnt a thing or two from the duo; his latest single debut Mungu Ataingilia is depicting a change of style from the artiste. Check out Ringtone’s new video:

“DJ Mantix is Thief and Con” Candy n Candy CEO Joe Kariuki

After being fired from candy n candy, “King” of the streets, or rather as he calls himself; DJ mantix has had a couple of con-related controversies. Just a few months ago, he (DJ Mantix was accused cheating five people into giving him a sum of Sh100,000, payment for Deejaying school fees offered by Joe Kariuki (his former boss), he then allegedly fled and efforts to reach him proved ineffective, forcing the five guys to let police into the matter.

Well, that was then. Now today Candy CEO while talking to the spice magazine said “Mantix is a thief and a con. He stole from us. He also received payments without our knowledge. Police have been informed about this by those who have fallen victim,”. This is after Joe allegedly accused him of stealing a laptop, a mixer from his studio and that he has even been conning people using the label’s name, despite the fact that he no longer works at Candy and Candy.

If at all that’s true;

Sonko’s Children Pose in Tiny Shorts .Is This We Should Expect from Their New Reality Show? (Photos)

Tiny shorts, big hair and flashy cars. It seems that this is what to expect from “The Sonko’s” a new reality show set to hit our television screens soon.

The oldest daughter Saumu shared some photos of her and her sisters posing seductively  in tiny shorts on a Range Rover .I have to admit though I was a bit uncomfortable with the tiny one wearing short shorts and a crop top. I am no Judge Judy but I don’t think children should be allowed to wear such revealing trashy clothes. They say clothes are a very powerful way to communicate and I just think that these clothes are sending the wrong message.

But then again it’s not in my place to judge but I’m sure the Sonko Girls will give us something to look forward to.

Alas! It hard to say who is better than who but that again depends on the inclination one choses to take.

That apart, its time I tell you who was fully of praise to which group; Tanzania’s Shaa almost ran out of breath when expressing her passion for Elani. Remember that feeling one gets when you meet your childhood icon? Then that will explain Shaa’s reaction. On the other hand; Uganda’s Jackie Chandiru of the famed gold-digger could not resist Sautisol’s six packs, I mean he loves their music madly.
