Julie Gichuru is without a doubt one of Kenya’s favorite media personalities.

She hosts the ‘Sunday Live’ show on Citizen TV, a prime time news and current affairs program. July also owns Arimus Media Limited which she started to grow local content.

She has managed to establish herself as a sought after actor and a media mogul and as it turns out she may have gotten these skills from one of her grandparents.

Her Grandpa was Lawrence Kibui, a veteran Kenyan journalist. Here is Lawrence pictured during an interview in the US. He is the one in a black suit

The narrative about Kenya’s comedy would not end without the name of one Daniel “Churchill” Ndambuki aka Mwalimu King’ang’I being mentioned; he usually brings laughter on your TV screens and entertains you every morning on radio and today you have the perfect opportunity to show him a speck of appreciation for his great work.

They say a laughter a day keeps the doctor away(see what I did there) and this can best understood if you happen to Keep up with Churchill or rather King’ang’I in his morning show on Classic fm or Churchill Show on NTV on Sundays. There is no better word to describe Churchill’s prowess in as far as comedy is concerned and I can say without any fear or favor Churchill is the undisputed king of Kenyan comedy.

Today is Churchill’s birthday, a good day to celebrate Churchill’s relentless effort in making us laugh. Making people laugh is not a joke and this is why I recommend you check out these photos maybe they will give you a reason to wish him a happy birthday:

When Silas Nyanchwani of the Standard Group Limited sat down in his crib, house, office or wherever he taunted Kikuyus from, his mind was already floating on the idea of how his blog could go viral in a span of a moment. And indeed he managed to hit the nail on the head.

Kenya is a very ethnic state. We all know that and we have failed to change that because of the deadly disease we are suffering from; ethnic jingoism, ethnic myopia. This is a disease that no one has ever managed to cure. Not even the best doctors on earth.

Silas Nyanchwani is one of us. Infact he is my fellow tribesman. We share the same disease. The same ethnic disease, to be precise.

That said, Nyanchwani understands quite well what him and I are suffering from. That is why he managed to hit the headlines in a span of a moment, by attacking us from our weakest point.

For those who still do not know what Nyanchwani said don’t worry. I will let you know, though briefly. Nyanchwani in his blog nyanchwani.wordpress.com, had landed on the Kikuyu community with much precision, with a thud and with verve and vigor.

He took issue with how the Kikuyus cooked their meals and specifically their favourite meal, Mukimo. Nyanchwani sounded so disappointed that Kikuyus cooked what he termed the worst meal. He added further insult that Kikuyus were the worst cooks he has ever come across. Ooh that was insulting.

But as foolish as we are, we simply succumbed to Nyanchwani’s plan. At the end of the day, he closed down his computer, smiling all the way to his dining table and later to bed, knowing very well that he had achieved his day’s agenda: that of marketing himself and his blog famous.

Kenya, for a long time has been divided along tribal lines, thanks to the huge political differences preying on us each day. So Nyanchwani knew what could make Kenyans visit his blog more than any other on that particular day; a simple divide and rule policy.

He started his strategy shrewdly. Attacking Kikuyus, who make the largest population in the country was his first step. He knew this could be an achievement on his side because he could touch many Agikuyu.

That perfectly worked out on his favour. I saw it from my desk where I work from, because my immediate colleague hails from Central Kenya. His reaction after seeing the blog was scary . Nyanchwani then went on to ‘incite’ all the other tribes against  Kikuyus’ Mukimo. This he did by praising meals prepared by other tribes as he poured cold water on Mukimo, a Kikuyu’s favourite meal. By doing this, Nyanchwani made Kikuyus look the worst cooks the earth has ever produced. The rest of the 41 tribes in Kenya looked the perfect cooks on earth. Better than Capital Club’s renowned Italian cook Luigi Frascella.

Nyanchwani finally made sure that the article went very viral by giving it the publicity it deserved. Blogs copied and pasted it on their sites. One such blog which has proved to be anti-Jubilee is Dikembe Disembe’s Kenya Today. It published the article and made it circulate like handouts given during the electioneering period.

Dikembe Disembe, who happens to be my fellow alumnus from Moi University, is a household name. He is well known for his stern criticism of the Jubilee government. His following on the social media is massive. He is controversial, and that perhaps has helped to sell him to Kenyans. When he posts anything on the social media, the responses are massive. Nyanchwani’s article therefore got several visits through Dikembe Disembe.

Unfortunately, we all could not detect Nyanchwani’s strategy. We succumbed to his ideologies and effectively got preyed by his predatory article. A scholar once said, ‘a chameleon can change colours to escape a predator but cannot change colours to escape a wild fire’. Nyanchwani’s was a wild fire. It caught us. It burnt us.

Kikuyus got raged with Nyanchwani’s article. The rest of Kenya got amazed and excited about it. This was possible because of the divisions we have created amongst ourselves. Ethnic divisions. Ethnic jingoism. Ethnic myopia.

Nyanchwani has tried to justify his article by claiming that the Mukimo article was just the beginning. That he was planning to write and criticise every meal by every community. That is a lie of course but the damage is already done. It is a lie because in his article he had praised meals prepared by our (Nyanchwani and I) tribesmen (abagusii), Luos, Luhyas, the Coastal people and many others and strongly criticised Mukimo.

That is what political differences, tribalism and ethnic stereotypes can do to a third-world nation.

 

After Vera Sidika allegedly publicly blasted evicted Kenyans from BBA Hotshots, Melvin Alusa responded to her comments in a rather interesting way.

Vera Sidika took on to her Facebook page and wrote Kenyan representatives to BBA Hotshots were ugly and boring and that’s why they didn’t amount to much. In a press conference Alusa had with the media today at Sarova Stanley hotel, he reacted to Vera’s comment in a rather interesting way that sure will make the socialite think more than twice before she could post such comment again.

 

“She is shallow and couldn’t have made it, BBA Hotshots is for talented people” Alusa responded when a Ghafla! writer asked his opinion on the matter. So this pokes the question: What is Vera’s talent? Vera should know better not to attack people who have “justifiable” talents; or who knows what Vera’s talent is? kindly enlighten us. Winning BBA is the ultimate dream for many. You do not only gain fame and prestige beyond your own imagination. And 300,000 USD is a crazy amount of money!

But winning the BBA competition has become just but a pipe dream to many especially Kenyans. After brainstorming with a few people, we came up with a few pointers that could increase your chances of winning the big cash or at least gain mileage in the house.

1: Have a strategy; it’s a game, usiende huko kimala mala. Have a plan .Choose whether you are going to be controversial or bring out the worst in people like Tayo from this year’s BBA.

2: Africa generally votes in three blocks, West Africa, South Africa and East Africa. Do not under any cost nominate someone from your block as this will create bad blood between some of the countries in that block and you. For example if you are Kenyan, do not nominate someone from Uganda or Tanzania, that is akin to suicide. Because if you do and you are up for elimination, Tanzanians and Uganda’s will not be on your side

3: Date someone from another block. Nothing garners votes quite like a beautiful love story, think Prezzo and Goldie, Pokello and Elikem.

By having a relationship with Goldie, Prezzo got some West African votes that gave him mileage, it took him to number 2 in the finals, something that had never been done by any Kenyan.

Elikem made it to the finals as he did not only have West Africa votes but also South African as Pokello was Zimbabwean.

4: Watch at least 3 seasons before the one you want to audition for, this will help you map out a strategy and avoid the potholes that got people evicted

5: Africa detests ratchetness especially from women .Promises of sex, sex and twerking are a bad idea. Case in point, Mira, Huddah and Lillian(who twerked a lot) .Dillish won last year because she was decent and did not engage in any hanky-panky.

Being pretty did not hurt too 🙂

6: Give Africa what it wants. Think of this as an interview. Bring your best foot forward. Be what Africa wants you to be. (Refer to pint number 4)

7: Do not be yourself 100 perecent,I know people say that you should be yourself, but let the skeletons remain in the closet.

8:Don’t expose yourself too much; a little mystery goes a long way. Make people want to know you more, keep you in the house to unravel the mystery that is you.

9: Watch your back. Make friends but remember only one person can win the 300,000 USD.

It seems that Vera Sidika has been awfully salty over this year’s BBA Hotshots and even allegedly went to the extent of calling them ugly,boring and severely lacking in strategy.As it turns out, Vera Sidika is just a classic tale of ‘Sour Grapes’.

Maybe, she got angry because she could not get the BBA spot that she coveted so dearly and that is why she took shots at the evicted BBA contestants after denying that she didn’t audition.

I happened to hang out with some M-Net big shots and evictees who revealed that the reason that Vera could not get into this year’s BBA House is because she had no talent. And this year’s BBA season WAS ALL ABOUT TALENT.

It was for those people who had made a name for themselves in acting, singing or writing poetry, deep stuff.Twerking and booty-clapping wouldn’t cut it,even the twerkers in this year’s BBA had an early exit.

 

Truth is even if Vera had talent, she would not last past the first week because she doesn’t come off as a deep person. On Social media, Vera is attention-grabbing, fascinating even, but if it’s about BBA, it’s not enough to have an interesting personality; you have to have a LARGER-THAN-LIFE personality. My theory might not be so far fetched, because after recently hanging out with some Multi-Choice guys,they tend to think the same you, have to be larger-than-life!

The truth however, is that yes, Tujuane will be moving but their new home will not be K24 .A high-ranking M-Net source revealed that Maisha Magic will be the new home of Tujuane as of  December 1^st 2014.

 

The source further revealed that one of the hosts could be scrapped off as the show’s host because since the show will now become East African,there would be need for diversity in the hosting.The remaining host would be hosting alongside someone else form one of the East African Countries.

Kenyans have been on the receiving end lately, The south Africans voted us the ugliest form of existence in Africa several months ago, something we trashed as petty and downright ludicrous. We were recently thrashed in rugby mercilessly and embarrassed at our home ground. When we thought that life was getting sober, Gor-mahia struck,wrecking havoc and disrupting our peace and tranquility.. 

As if this was not enough, Melvin Alusa and Sabina,the duo that carried all our hopes and dreams in  the BBA were bundled out in close succession amidst a wraith of speculation that they could have done better. 

Robert Alai, the blogger who seems to have a vendetta against everyone called Alusa Idiotic,shallow and terminally boring. He with the authority of a blogger who spares no artillery commanded Alusa to go back to the confines of his lazy cocoon from whence he came.

Vera Sidika, she of bleaching controversy was not mincing her words either, erstwhile,she was rumored to be the one who would be representing Kenya in the BBA, the grapevine turned out be an untruth. 

Her Facebook timeline would record:-“The Representatives were ugly and boring, that’s why Kenya didn’t win…”. Her sentiments were echoed by one Garrison G Lastking on Facebook, who alleged that he has worked for MTV Africa and  was of the feeling that Kenya lacked strategy in the BBA house which consequently led to eviction. 

From her recent activity she seems to be raring for a chance to represent Kenya in the next BBA thingy. Can she gerrit?

Among those he has nurtured and brought to the limelight is Teacher Wanjiku, a female comedian in Kenya who has the comedy industry by surprise with her comic nature.

And Teacher Wanjiku has not disappointed her mentor as he celebrates his birthday today.

Standard Group writer Silas Nyanchwani wrote an article last week that went viral like deadly virus. Here Nyanchwani was taking a dig at the Kikuyu tribe for their best meal, Mukimo, which according to him, is the worst meal ever prepared by a Kenyan tribe.

Nyanchwani started off by excusing himself from any tribal jingoism and myopia, and said that his was just trying to rectify what he considered poor cooking skills and habits.

He blasted mukimo, a favourite Kikuyu meal, and its methods of preparation. Nyanchwani wondered how someone could smash sweet potatoes with pumpkin leaves then boil it in water and call it a meal.

This caused criticism and support for Nyanchwani in equal measure from the public. His claim that Kikuyus are the worst cooks in Kenya angered the Central and beyond.

And now Dennis Itumbi, the Director of Digital Communication in the Office of the President, has jumped to the defense of mukimo.

Despite accepting that he does not like mukimo himself, Itumbi says that no one has any moral authority to insult other people’s lifestyles.

Love is in the air as BBA Hotshots housemates have started breaking down the barriers to be more open and personal with each other, some have gone a step further to even mark their territory in as far as dating in the house is concerned.

South Africa’s Nhlanhla and Botswana’s Sheillah have long been “dating” in the house and recently they were heard joking about marriage. The two are very tight and spend better part of their time in the house hanging together. There love however will be tested this coming Sunday as Sheillah is up for eviction and only African voters will decide her fate.

Meanwhile Namibia’s Permithias and Botswana’s Goitse also seem to have something brewing; Goitse wanted Permithias to help her write a love song and she teased him that she was in love with him. Permithias then started getting very affectionate with her as he leaned over her and nuzzled her neck. Many of us had not heard of the International Criminal Court (ICC) until after the 2007/2008 post-election violence that hit this country. Since then, ICC has been a household nam, largely because of the prosecutions going on against President Uhuru Kenyatta, his Deputy William Ruto and journalist Joshua Sang.

Since the cases against the trio commenced, a lot has happened in between. So much has been said about the cases and the ICC.

Walter Baraza, a Kenyan journalist was indicted by the ICC and put under arrest for allegedly leaking classified information to the public; information that was supposed to remain confidential and a top secret that was a preserve of the ICC.

And now the ICC is at it again, this time round on another Kenyan journalist, the Star’s Oliver Mathenge, also known as Baba Selfie.

Mathenge, who is famously remembered for being exclusively identified by president Uhuru Kenyatta when journalists visited State House a year ago, has been accused by the ICC of travelling the same route as his counterpart Walter Baraza.

The ICC believes that in his articles on the Star newspaper, Mathenge leaked confidential information that only belonged to the ICC to the public, something that could land him in trouble.

The ICC are reviewing every possibility that indeed confidential information was leaked to the public and this could see Oliver Mathenge indicted by the Hague-based criminal court over the same.

The ICC early on accused the Kenyan government of leaking confidential information about the indictees’ cases at the Hague, but officials from the Jubilee government strongly came out to refute the claims.

Oliver’s articles that have angered the judges’ bench include those titled AG Githu Muigai accuses Bensouda of dishonesty on Uhuru data and Kenya: I’m Blameless in Uhuru Case, Githu Tells ICC.

Ebola, the deadliest of all diseases ever experienced in world history, has continued to cause havoc in West Africa and other parts of the world as it continues to ravage on the population, mostly because of its mode of transmission and ability to kill within a maximum of 21 days.

12 Kenyans who have been stranded in Liberia, one of the worst Ebola-hit countries of Africa, arrived in the country yesterday and this has not gone down well with some people, considering the manner in which the government is handling the whole matter.

Cabinet Secretary for Health James Macharia said that the 12 Kenyans, upon arrival, will be screened for Ebola and if not found to be carrying the virus, they will be released to their homes but be closely monitored by health workers. That has already been done.

After screening, the Kenyans were allowed to join their relatives, something that has angered renowned Kenyan blogger, Robert Alai.

Alai who has never shied away from speaking his mind took to twitter to blast the Jubilee government over the manner in which it has handled the whole matter.

Alai believes that the government is putting Kenyans’ live at a great risk and that the 12 Kenyans should not have been left to join the public.

It is East Africa’s premier private City Club situated in the heart of the new business district of Westlands, Nairobi. It has one of the most renowned chefs in world history. A chef who has built a reputation for himself for his years of experience in catering to the refined tastes of some of the world’s most famous people.

Luigi Frascella is known for having cooked for celebrities such as Johnny Depp, Angelina Jolie, Brad Pitt, Al Pacino and Tina Turner.

Luigi, who joined Capital Club from Giannino Restaurant at Meydan Beach in Dubai, has previously worked for multiple Michelin-star restaurants, starting off his illustrious career at the two-Michelin Star restaurant Albereta in Italy under the tutelage of a man considered to be the founder of modern Italian cuisine, Gualtiero Marchesi.

But something horribly wrong has been cooking up against the Chief Chef at Capital Club in Westlands. His staff members seem to be completely dissatisfied with the manner in which he is handling them.

This is not the first time such accusations are coming up. In February this year, employees at #Capital Club strongly aired their grievances alleged to have come from the chef. Among the accusations levelled against him included racial abuse and molestation to the female employees.

This led to officers from the immigration department visiting Capital Club for interrogation. Ghafla Kenya sought to ascertain if indeed the officers summoned him for interrogation and Luigi admitted that indeed they investigated the matter and realised it was all fabricated. He says that is why he is still at Capital Club.

Almost eight months down the line, the very same allegations have come against Luigi, this time round though with a big impact and a lot of seriousness.

A close source exclusively revealed to Ghafla that the situation at Capital club has grown sickening, wanting and that which needed urgent intervention if at all the employees at the lofty club were to be spared the racism and harassment of Luigi Prascella.

In a letter specifically addressed to President Uhuru Kenyatta and which Ghafla Kenya has exclusively obtained, one of the employees, who requested to be kept anonymous because of the fear of losing their job, accuses Luigi of being a racist, calls employees dogs and brags that he can do anything without being reprimanded because he believes Africans are still stupid and that is why they were colonised.

To ascertain the truth behind this, Ghafla Kenya sought an interview with the accused, Luigi Frascella, which he accepted.

Our journey started off from the city centre, through Ngara to Westlands where Capital Club lies in a serene, cool and inviting environment.

After undergoing the necessary procedures common to meeting VIPs, we were allowed into the club, located at the 7^th floor of the Imperial Bank Limited building.

The lift up did not disappoint either. Within a minute or so, we were at the club’s doorstep. What meets the eyes is a cool environment, beautiful ladies and handsome men, full of themselves but deep down their hearts razed by what they allege is harassment on their own motherland.

Luigi emerges from the kitchen, limping out of the day’s chores and his first words are,”You are looking for me?” We nod in consent and then he leads us to a corner, on a soft sofa and requests us to make ourselves comfortable.

A lady follows us suit and Luigi asks us on her behalf if we mind some meal. We quickly decline because we had already visited a cafe down-town and had our favourite Matumbo Ugali for lunch. So we are comfortable. He orders the lady to serve him with what he loves. She quickly rushes to the other side of the lounge and brings him a cigarette and something that looks like coffee.

Our interview kicks off swiftly because of the seriousness of the allegations leveled against the renowned chef and our first question is, “Is it true that you are harassing your staff and calling them racial names?”

NO is the answer we get. A flurry of questions and discussions follow suit and Luigi, a composed man who has traveled far and wide to spread the cooking gospel, softly leans forward and starts his story.

“When I was asked to come over to work at Capital Club, I, without hesitation took up the offer and left my lucrative job in Dubai to work in Nairobi, Kenya. There is no way I could come over if I were a racist as they say”, he says this with a stern sorry face.

We ask how it can be possible for his staff to spend a whole year complaining about his alleged antics at Capital Club. His response is simple but leaves room for more questions. He says, ”You know Ethwarith (Edward) in any organisation there are rules and regulations to be followed. When I ask my staff to do this, they feel I am doing it in a bad way. But you must remain and stick to work principles for you to get the best out of your staff”.

He adds, “I have very good and hard working employees here at Capital Club. How I mistreat them I don’t know. I have never called anyone a dog. I love Kenya and its people. I know we come from different backgrounds but there is no way I can mishandle or manhandle the people who are so welcoming to me. I also work with my wife in the same kitchen. We all respect each other here”.

Luigi requested us to spend a single day at Capital Club and ascertain how work is done. He also wondered why somebody would write to the media and the president and yet there are police all over whom one can report to.

We reminded him that it is alleged he bribes officials. He quickly refuted the allegations and termed them malicious.

Amidst buffs of cigarette smoke, our interview is coming to a conclusion but Luigi begs us once again to visit club capital to ascertain the truth behind everything. We promise to.

We leave Capital Club slowly; eyes of the employees following us keenly as we wait for the lifts to open and finally, when they come, we take a final glance at the serenity of the place but with a destroyed rapport behind it, and off we leave.

What unfolds after this is a story for another day.

Late last week, Sauti Sol was named the ‘Best African Act ‘at the MTVEMAs .

This accomplishment made them the first Kenyan musicians from Kenya to win such a title. What’s even better they triumphed over some serious competitors that consist of Davido, Diamond, Toofan and Goldfish.

The boy band is however facing another challenge as they will be battling it out with Mohammed Assaf and Yoyo honey Sigh for the best musician spot in the Africa, India and Middle East Category.
