Raila Odinga on Wednesday took time off his usual busy political schedule to savor some moment with a close dear person.

This was his granddaughter who according to the ODM leader had paid him a surprise visit. The two shared a special bonding moment as the grand daughter Senaya got some writing skills from his grand dad. It was a moment that touched many of his followers online critics and supporters alike and many urged him to spend more time with his family as they had missed him.

Whilst musicians look to get people to move to their sounds, it is often harder to find meaning behind the music. For many African artists, music is the motivator they use to make their mark on society.

On this week’s ‘African Voices’ from Nairobi, Kenya, the programme meets Octopizzo, a Swahili hip hop artist who uses his music to shine a light on an area of the city that is often neglected.

Octopizzo grew up in Kibera, one of the largest slums in Africa, housing around a fifth of Nairobi’s population.

Octopizzo explains the impact growing up in the area had on him to ‘African Voices’: “Growing up, I wanted to make ‘being’ from Kibera, cool. That was my number one goal, as a rapper. A kid that grows up here, can somewhere and say, ‘Yeah, I’m from Kibera, man. I want to be a doctor’, and people would take him seriously.”

As someone who lost his parents when he was only 15, Octopizzo learnt how to grow up fast. Despite his success, when Octopizzo returns to Kibera, he tries to encourage others to follow their dreams and achieve.

The hip hop artist has his own charity, the Octopizzo Foundation, who seek to aid young people in slums through art, music and sport.

Octopizzo explains his vision to ‘African Voices’: “Under these iron sheets, there’s babies, presidents, the next Octopizzo, everybody’s in here. Only if they meet the right person in their life. If they make the right choices.”

‘African Voices’ learns that, as well as his foundation, the hip hop artist has used his own music to educate others about life in Kibera.

Octopizzo explains to the programme: “There is no song that doesn’t have the name ‘Kibera’, and it will remain like that… Coming here from experiencing the other side of life. It hurts. It hurts that some people can’t afford to have a better life.”

‘African Voices’ learns that although Octopizzo has taken his family out of Kibera, he feels that displaying and discussing the hardships within the slums through his music is the best way to address the issues in the community.

Octopizzo tells ‘African Voices’: “We’re bringing you (CNN’s ‘African Voices’) to show the other stuff that people don’t think about. There are kids going to school, kids playing football.  Artists like us that are rapping and trying to change stuff… You see it!  You don’t read it.  And it makes you a different person.”

Also featured on the programme is Durban-based musician, DJ Lag. The South African artist has created, and found success through, a new type of music inspired by tribal sounds called Gqom,

‘African Voices’ also meets the eclectic musician Bobo in Marrakech, Morocco, who channels the spirit of Bob Marley in the ancient city.

5 months since the death of Mugithi Maestro Salim Junior, a fight has emerged in the family.

The row allegedly pits Salim’s siblings (Sarafina Salim and Mighty Salim) and father Joe Salim against his three wives Mama Tasha, Nelly, and the youngest Judy.

Salim died leaving behind 3 daughters all from different mothers Tasha, Tracey and Winskate. After the funeral ,Salim’s father called for a meeting to distribute cash that had been raised during the funeral including some money given by the president through Kameme FM presenter Njogu wa Njoroge. The meeting was attended by the funeral committee (which comprised of Salim’s siblings and two other artistes) and the three wives.

And that is when things started going left.

A source close to Judy claims that after the burial, the committee met to distribute the money to the children’s mothers but this was met with sharp resistance from the family who vowed that the money could only be released to them.

The source went to further divulge that efforts by the committee to reach an amicable solution were unsuccessful as Mighty Salim and his father allegedly refused to attend any more meetings as long as the decision was to give the money to anyone else other than them.

Judy was then kicked out of their matrimonial home and she threatened to sue the family and true to her word, a letter from a lawyer was sent to the committee.

The letter was from Gathii Irungu associates and advocates which stated that Judy that  was only legitimate wife to Salim and she should receive a share of the money which amounted to 900,000. Her reasons were that Salim did not leave behind any inheritance and their household goods were taken away by his relatives so she was unable to fend for Winskate.

This was after the family had allegedly met for yet another burial and that’s when Sarafina offered to take Judy’s child Winskate back to her place before schools opened.

One Sunday, a few weeks before schools opened, Judy came for Winskate and said she would bring her back in the evening. She didn’t and went radio silent for two weeks; refusing to pick up calls and the only communication they got was the lawyer’s letter.

Sarafina then went on to add that before Salim passed away, Judy and Salim had split up momentarily in August 2015.The reason for this split was that after Salim was admitted in hospital for the first time, some auctioneers came to sell off their items as she had allegedly taken a loan and had used their property to do so. A loan which she defaulted. The auctioneers were then advised to come after Salim had left hospital and they did and Salim’s stuff was auctioned off. This was despite the 70k she allegedly had also taken from Salim’s phone when he was unwell.

Salim was so angry and allegedly chased Judy away but they reunited monetarily in January this year as Salim wanted to see his daughter and she stayed at his place for a while before his tragic death.

Something which one of Salim’s other wife who requested anonymity agreed. That Salim and Judy had indeed split up momentarily. The wife also said that Judy had sent the said letter after Salim’s family went silent and rumors started flying around that Salim’s dad was finishing a house that Salim had started building. That is what triggered Judy to put that injunction, preventing the money from being distributed.

The wife then went on to add that she is okay if she doesn’t get the money as she can afford to take care of her child something she has been doing entirely on her own for the last 3 years.

The other wife also agreed that she had also not gotten the money and no communication was forthcoming from the family since that little meeting they had after the burial.

We are still trying to contact Judy for more details on the story so keep it Ghafla.

After taking a hiatus from music to concentrate on the big silver screen that is Hollywood, Denver-based Kenyan Gospel singer, Silas Mwenda, is back! The singer is set to drop a new music at the beginning of July.

Silas made the big reveal this week and even shared the event poster of the video launch expected to take place on July 3 in Aurora, Colorado.

Silas is well-known for being the first ever Gospel singer to record an entire music album with Ogopa DJs. Despite being a Gospel singer, his career as an actor is equally extraordinary.

In 2014, he ventured into acting too, and he was lucky to be selected to feature in an amazing film called “Love Lilly” which was shot in Denver Colorado, New Mexico and Los Angeles by Chesthut Films. It wasn’t long before he sealed a deal that saw him booked for PEPSI commercial which was shot in

Seattle, Washington in June last year. The Pepsi commercial, sponsored by US Airways, aired during the last season of American Football and also was onboard all US Airways flights.

Even with all this success following him, Silas hasn’t forgotten his first passion: Gospel music.

Cyrus Jirongo yesterday while appearing on Jeff Koinange Live revealed shocking details about the death of his son in law.

Speaking to Jeff Koinange Cyrus Jirongo said his son in Law Cameron Chase Huntley who is an American teacher was shot dead by two people on a motorcycle. The shooting occurred early this month as Jirongo’s daughter and his fiancée were walking to a restaurant for breakfast. Two men in a boda boda appeared and demanded a laptop the man was carrying and when he questioned why they pointed a gun at Sally Jirongo.

This is when the man moved in between shielding Jirongo’s daughter and the gunmen shot him before fleeing towards Nakumat Junction. The incident happened near Riara School and Cameron was a teacher at the Language Center Riara. Jirongo lamented the manner with which police are conducting investigations while talking about the situation of his daughter and the threats she has been receiving via texts intended for him.

“That was an assassination and my daughter is really traumatised,” he said during the interview.

“Two people on a bodaboda bypassed them on the road then stopped a few metres ahead. They then demanded for the laptop the man was carrying, when he hesitated, they shot him several times.”

“Worse, my daughter who is now in North Carolina for the burial, receives a threatening text message the following day. We forwarded the same to the CID but they can only claim it’s from Kamiti,” Jirongo complained.

Rufftone has come a long way from his days  when he was singing It’s Up To You to his conversion to Christianity and gospel music industry up to when he formed Lampstand Records.

It is thus quite expected that he should seek new challenges and the veteran singer seems to have chosen the grueling thrill of the rally track. He does love fast cars and he decided to take part in the KCB Rally meeting at KICC where he met the rally brothers Mehash Halai and Ketan Halai who participate in the Kenya National Rally series in the Class S division

Last year, Kenyan multi-award winning band ‘Sauti Sol’ made global headlines after they made outgoing USA President Barack Obama break into a dance.

This was during a party held at State House during his much anticipated trip to Kenya.

Over the last week, Kenyans have been calling on the authorities to intercede after photos of two little girls getting sexually abused went viral.

Thanks to social media, the two girls have been identified and the police have launched a manhunt for the culprit who is alleged to be a soldier in Zimbabwe, something which the army has denied.

The national police spokesperson Senior Assistant Commissioner Charity Charamba said this to members of the press “We have managed to identify two of the children in the pictures but we cannot divulge their identity as they are protected by law. We also are not in a position to give any information about their location or age at the moment. A key informant gave us all this information, the informant managed to give us good leads.”

“We are now hunting for the culprit and we have stakeholders and other people who are assisting in identifying him and soon we will have him in hopefully,” she said before asking their parents to monitor their children to prevent them from falling prey to abusers.

“I am appealing to parents and guardians to monitor minor children closely all the time. They have to observe any suspicious behaviour that they may exhibit because that is when they can hear of cases of abuse. Again parents must make an effort to be close to their children so that if any abuse is happening the child may confide in them, they open up more if you have a close relationship with them.” she said.

Julie Gichuru and Akothee tied on top as the most fertile female celebrities in Kenya. But with baby number six on the way, the crown now belongs to Akothee.

Akothee is a mother of five adorable kids; three girls and two boys. The songbird is in the process of adding a new member to her family.

‘My Sweet Love’ hit maker has been rumored to be pregnant with baby number six for one too many times. But now it seems the rumors had basis.

Akothee left Kenya for South Africa a day ago and the purpose of her visit was only known to her and a few, until now.

The singer checked in at Netcare Rosebank Hospital in Johannesburg where she had a date with a special South African doctor.

Akothee shared her photo in the hospital while the doctor was administering an ultrasound scan on her belly.

It will come in the form of 7 mega concerts in 7 major towns across the country with the custodians being over 20 Artists selected from across East Africa.

Our little gossip bird which relayed all this information was also quick to mention that it would be a disaster if we missed this awakening moment which will indeed transform everything we are used to. Now before we could get the exact details of what we were to expect, our little bird disappeared never to be seen again.

We have been doing a little digging and apparently the big surprise is PNL…yes, just that, PNL. Don’t give that face because I’m being very serious. Maybe it’s PLO who has decided to reinvent himself with this cool new name. Or maybe it’s a new political party launching expected to take us to the land of milk and honey.

The Deputy President William Ruto has always prided himself in his humble upbringing using this to cite his understanding of the common man.

He has now built a habit of eating out at the very common of places visited by locals without much fuss save for the camera. Last week he was at a nyama choma den in Umoja and as evident in the picture he had quite a great time.

Tanzanian-made helicopter makes us Kenyans look like we are in a deep slumber unaware of President Magufuli’s plan to oust us as regional powerhouse.

President John Pombe Magufuli’s industrialization policy is quickly positioning Tanzania into the next regional powerhouse.

From introducing bus rapid transit system in Dar es Salaam to first cable-stayed 680-meter-long bridge in East and Central Africa, Magufuli has more surprises.

Apparently Tanzania is building its own choppers. A prototype model of a two-seater helicopter is in its final stages of completion at the Mechanical and Engineering Department of the Arusha Technical College.

The college runs a fully-fledged factory producing various forms of machinery including a prototype motor vehicle and a number of industrial engines.

The institution has already contacted Tanzania Civil Aviation Authority (TCAA) for the permission to fly the chopper for trials.

The helicopter is currently 50 per cent complete and it’s expected to get airborne as a fully functional chopper by 2018.

Tanzania plans to use the chopper for surveillance, rescue and agricultural purposes and later on for transportation when modifications are made on the airframes as the project takes shape.

TNA Chairman and Jubilee nominated Mp Johnson Sakaja has eaned quite a boost in reputation and image with a recent accolade he has won.

The first time MP who has always seen his stock rise ever since he formed a party that Uhuru Kenyatta used, he has grown in stature and influence. Right now he is eyeing the Nairobi governorship.

His recent awards, the continental Africa Achievers Award for being the 2016 Africa Change Maker sees him get a huge rating for his policy making and leadership skills. A letter from organizers reads “This is in recognition of your leadership skills and youth empowerment in Kenya. Your standing belief in the young generations and their potentials has made you a remarkable change maker,”

Sakaja has been instrumental in enacting favorable youth policies and sponsoring bills as well as championing the youth agenda in the nation.

You can hate him for the braggadocio that comes in his every statement and appearance, you can hate him for his style of music and even fashion, but you cannot deny that the self-proclaimed Kibera’s finest has done well for himself.

How a young man with only music to focus on went on from hustling in the streets to globe-trotting and rubbing shoulders with various diplomatic corps is quite a story. For much of early this month, Octopizzo has been involved with the UNHCR matters.

Kinondoni area is Dar es Salaam came to a standstill on Thursday night after a delirious Ray-C was bundled into a police car kicking and screaming that she was being kidnapped.

Witnesses say that Ray-C arrived at Kinondoni area barefoot claiming that there were kidnappers pursuing her and she needed to be protected.

Others said that the revered singer also tried stripping and asked for a knife so that she could take her own life. Tanzanian actress Esha Behati who witnessed the whole situation said that she had gone to look for some chips before someone alerted them that Ray-C was on the streets acting crazy and threatening to strip.

Buheti then rushed outside and gave her account of the story on Instagram. “Ray C said that she needed to be shielded from some people who wanted to kidnap her. People then held her to prevent her from hurting herself but she was very strong and started talking incoherently. She then started looking for a knife to stab herself and she was restrained by members of the crowd.

After people stopped her from stabbing herself, she threw herself on the ground and stared rolling in the mud and screaming. I broke into tears.” Buheti revealed in an emotional post

“A police car came and took her away with difficulty because she kept fighting off the police and when they managed to get her into the car, she kept shouting “Natekwa!” (I’m being kidnapped).” The Tanzanian actress wrote before urging her fellow Tanzanians to help Ray-C.

Thankfully, Ray-C has received some help and is currently admitted at the Rehab, Life and Hope Rehabilitation Centre, in Bagamoyo, Dar es Salaam.

Speaking to Mwanaspoti, one of the Rehab Center Directors Karima Banji said “Yes it’s true we received Ray C but I honestly can’t comment on her state because it’s too early to say anything vivid about her state.”

Transgender activist Audrey Mbugua dropped the bomb at Senate Health Committee.

Audrey Mbugua made headlines years ago after it was revealed that he was a former Maseno University male student who changed his sexuality to be woman.

Audrey has fought several legal battles in court for the recognition of transgender people. Perhaps the most memorable court case was in 2014 when the High Court ordered the Kenya National Examinations Council to change Mbugua’s name on her academic certificates from Andrew to Audrey.

Audrey Mbugua is back in limelight again, she submitted a memorandum on the 2016 Health Bill seeking sex reassignment therapy to be permitted in the Health Bill.

Sex reassignment therapy can consist of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) to modify secondary sex characteristics, sex reassignment surgery to alter primary sex characteristics, and other procedures altering appearance, including permanent hair removal for trans women.[sic]

The transgender activist wants her kind to be allowed to under sex reassignment therapy in Kenyan hospitals.

“Transgender people are not Homosexuals (gays and lesbians), hermaphrodites, cross dressers or prostitutes. We propose inclusion of sex reassignment therapy to be permitted by this Act and inclusion in the Health Bill to solve these challenges.” Audrey’s memo read in part.

For close to 3 years, the grapevine has had it that Kalekye and gospel deejay, DJ Sadic are in a romantic relationship.

This is after the two were spotted on numerous locations chilling together and supporting each other’s hustles.

The two remained mum about the rumour, but three years after it was revealed the two were an item, Kalekye has finally spoken about it during a Ghafla interview

“I think the reason why it was easy for people to jump on that and make a story out of it they could not understand how Kalekye Mumo could be friends with Gospel deejay, DJ Sadic.” I’m very connected with God and I got to meet DJ Sadic when we did a Juliani concert and I was Mceeing and Sadic was one of the DJ’s and I just loved how he played.” She revealed before adding that she had been a huge fan of DJ Sadic since his days at Capital. F.M.

They got to hangout after the concert since they worked so well together and they later became friends.The two were spotted hanging out in Sadic’s gospel concerts, firing up rumors that they were an item.

“When the rumor came out, we laughed about it.” She revealed before adding that the reason she hangs out with Sadic is because he helped her in her spiritual growth. And that we should not look so much into her friendship with Sadic, they are just cool friends.

So Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria has no balls!!! Suna East MP Junet Mohamed revealed this yesterday!

Yesterday, Pangani Six had a lunch with Cord Leaders at Kosewe Restaurant along Kimathi Street.

After the lunch, the politicians addressed members of the press who had gathered outside Kosewe waiting for them.

Suna East MP Junet Mohamed talked about their experience at Pangani Police Station. Junet revealed Moses Kuria had no balls.

“Kwa wale wazee walifungwa kwa jela mimi ndo nlikua kijana ndani yao. Na nliona siku ambayo tunaingia kwa jela usiku, nlikua nafikiri Moses Kuria ni mwanaume. Nkaona kama maken** imeisha ndani yake (laughs) kama tunaingia kwa jela.” Junet told members of the fourth estate.

There was a lot of noise on social media after NTV’s Larry Madowo announced that he would be sitting down for an interview with the resident provocateur, Moses Kuria .

KOT felt that it was not wise to host a ‘hate-monger’ on national TV. But Larry urged Moses to come in for the interview despite the interview’s frosty reception on social media.

The interview however did not go as planned as Larry seemed agitated and kept cutting off Moses Kuria and could not hide his distaste for the Gatundu M.P. The interview then escalated into a shouting match and not much information was gotten from the interviewee.

KOT felt that Larry had gotten too big for his breeches and it didn’t take long for them to bite back.

They savagely attacked him, accusing him of being unprofessional and lacking objectivity. Some went to the extent of telling him to stick to interviewing socialites.

About a few hours ago, Tim Njiru of Ideal Space decided to school Larry on how to interview in an open letter.

Here is the letter:

Dear Larry Madowo,

I succumbed to peer pressure and watched that much talked about interview you had with Moses Kuria. Hmmm, the lighting was good, sound was perfect and no distortion at all. In fact I was waiting to see people walking past the camera like they do in most of your shows. I will assume that the technical team are getting great salaries. Well done.

I am not a TV interview expert though years of sitting In front of people of all ages and backgrounds has taught me one thing ….. a great interviewer listens… Listens harder, picks cues from the interviewee then uses those cues to bring the topic to a simmering point. A clever interviewee will know when to stop (assuming the noose is tight)

“Raarey” ….. Moses Kuria knew very well you weren’t tightening his noose. I mean the guy has studied your demeanor so many times on your Friday shows and knew who he was going to face. Moses unlike most of your guests is very intelligent and well spoken. You had an opportunity to intelligently bring this one out, but instead you antagonized the the man who we expected to say something small about the family he missed while in prison. That could have opened a can of worms (But hey, it’s none of my business)

Here’s what I would recommend…. Take some time off… Learn a few tricks and tips from your colleagues Mark Masai and Debarl Inea…. Read a few quotes from the greatest Larry King. Tune to BBC radio and realize that even Mathew Bannister uses simple English to bring the best from his interviewees.

And lastly, “Raaahrey” we all know that your character revolves around your Happy socks (and many more); quite frankly, I have no problem with that. But Please for Christ sake and for the entire fraternity, pull up those happy socks.

I say the above because you are and will be judged by your last story.
