Bro’s reply to Mejja… from Nyeri

With the Nyeri saga still at its peak, I think it’s the perfect time for Mejja’s ‘bro’ to send a reply ‘barua’ to Nairobi from Nyeri… “huku Nyeri tu ni mashida…”

We are however not sure of “bro’s” condition back in Nyeri as we are of all men there. As funny as it is, this is not a laughing matter…[hehehehe]!

Plus, the King of Facebook, OJ, tells us that women in Nyeri are now required to have a certificate of good conduct before marriage. Ain’t this a life saver?!

‘Bro’, wherever you are, whichever state you are in, start working on that reply.

Did you know about the Somali rappers from Eastleigh?… They’re actualy fighting Al Shabaab

When I heard about these Somali rappers, I said to myself that this might just be the next big thing (like K’Naan).

Too bad they don’t rap in English or Swahili, but for their cause, their music is best in their Somali language.

They are known as ‘Waayaha Cusub’ and their most famous track is titled ‘say no to al shabaab’. The song is aimed at literally trashing Al Shabaab and their believes, and also show that not all Muslims and Somalis are in cahoots with the terrorists and terrorism in general.

Their studio was once a store and a hangout joint. Now, it’s strictly used for music production. It is situated in Eastleigh, First Avenue and it attracts more crowd than an oil spill in Kenya.

Ali,(pictured above) a member of the group, says that he has frequently received threatening text messages from the terrorists. They even attacked and shot him on November 10Th 2010. Yet, he is still going strong. Still rapping, still spreading the word against Al Shabaab.

Here is a sneak to his flow.

RUTH WAMUYU: I SURRENDER

On the Katenga Music

He is the producer behind hits like Alfayo’s ‘follow me’ and many others.

Cartel, of Katenga Productions has helped in bring up talented artistes who luck enough funds to venture into music due to high charges from studios.

It is producers like him, Gidigidi and Rufftone that nature the Kenyan talent. KTN did an interview on some of these patriotic producers and here’s the scoop.

Kantai is back

After a long silence the lyrical king Kantai is back

but it’s courtesy of Halaiki family. Kantai is featured in their latest single ‘halali mziki’ by Halaiki Family.

The family disclosed that the minute they listened to the instrumental they wanted to keep it real and that’s how Kantai came on board and as usual he kept it real and the song got the originality it needed.

Kantai does the last verse and for real he is still the best lyricist and if not, then his among the best.  He brings the energy required and also builds the confidence among the Halaiki Family members.

Let`s wait for the video and to the Halaiki Family thanks for bringing back Kantai to the music industry.

‘Walking with Jesus’ trailer

We are here to give you the hot stuff, from music, gossip to film.

I’ve always stressed on the growth of the Kenyan Film and Music industry and how big we are becoming.

Recently, our very own actor, Oliver Litondo was nominated for Outstanding Actor in a Motion Picture at the 2012 National Association for the Advancement of Coloured People (NAACP) Awards (read related article).

Now, a marvelous Kenyan film premiered last month at the Prestige Plaza with big-fish names like Alfred Mutua present among others. The film, ‘Walking with Jesus’ is a must see and is now in cinemas.

Here is the trailer.

The most liked video of all time… so far

They’ve definitely made their mark… worldwide. Their videos are even played on Trace TV.

It is this kind of heights that we are all aiming for as Kenyans. Proud I am to say that Camp Mulla’s ‘party don’t stop’ video is the most liked in the ‘all time’ category.

The video was done by non other than the very best in Africa, Clarence Peters. Hot track, even hotter video… what more can they give us, you ask?

Well, ‘fresh all day’ will answer that dumb question. This is real heat.

Kitu Sewer… on the ‘ulevi’ tale

Kenya has a lot of good poets and lyricists. Kitu Sewer is in a category of his own. Did you know that he has done most of his track freestyle?…

yes, he just steps in the booth and turns the many pages of lyrics in his head, and just starts spitting. His lyrics are also meaningful unlike most freestyles. He even drops some methali and vitendawili while he is at it.

From Ukoo Flani Mau Mau, Kitu Sewer is a respected name in the Hip Hop scene. He recently did a track titled ‘ULEVI’ featuring MC Mutant.

The song is basically talking about alcohol’s effects on us. Kitu Sewer takes the alcohol role and raps on its behalf(as alcohol). The lyrics go something like,

nani alifanya life yako ikuwe hell?… ndio mi

Makes you think twice about picking up that drink. And just wait till you hear MC Mutant’s verse. This is real Kenyan Hip Hop… away from all the hype, to reality. Real ting deh!!!

Just listen to it hear and get the feeling I now have. #Check out the lyrics.

The latest gospel jam

This is one talented gospel rapper who was once a member of Hip Hope group but now he has emerged as a solo artiste. The sensational rapper

Bupe has dropped a new jam ‘I know who you are’ featuring talented singer Lisa Noah. Listen to the lyrics

Rapper Bupe said that he was inspired to write the song after a personal experience that made him realize that he can only trust and serve God alone.

The song is the chorus and the melodious singer Lisah was the perfect to the task as she did what everyone would expect. This lady is talented and Bupe said that we should watch out for her this year as she has more in store for us.

He has promised that the video should be out soon as he has teamed up with Washamba Unlimited who are video producers.

Latest from the New Kids in Town

This is a hot stuff done by upcoming talents beginning with the producer/ rapper

Lil Balla who is 17years old, the rappers are D-Boy who is only 15 years and got mad talent and Young A(lien) who is also below the age of 18.

They have released their first single titled ‘2 cool’ under the Black Gang movement. This group has mustard the art of hip hop and they are representing the young hip hoppers in the country.

Listen to verse two and you will notice D-Boy who is the new kid has the flow and he knows how to rhyme. His only 15 years but the sky is the limit and if he can  get maximum support he will sure be the next big thing in Kenyan hip hop.

Have a listen to the track ‘2 Cool’ below….

Sauti Sol at the Niger

Bien-Aime, Chimano, Delvin and Polycarp have truly done Kenya proud by being the FIRST EVER East African act invited to perform at the internationally acclaimed ‘Festival on the Niger’.

The festival is an annual event that celebrates authentic and diverse African culture and took place in the Mali capital of Bamako, primarily from the 15th to 19th of February 2012.

Well, from their own reports, Kenya’s boy band sensation seem to be having the time of their lives, with recently uploaded pictures of the time they have spent in Mali as well as during the festival.

The rapper that understands money chasing… now this is a grand hustler

Remember earlier when I told you about his ambitious nature(read the article), well, I was right.

Octopizzo knows where money is and he’s not wasting any time to get it (something that other rappers should learn).

It is with no doubt that when you grow without money, you learn to respect it more. Octo has had more than enough lessons on this. Just like Snoop Dogg and 50 Cent, he is an entrepreneur… and a good one.

From selling mix tapes, he has now opened a ladies’ shoe store. Situated at the Adams Arcade, the shop promises to keep the ladies smiling.

I have a feeling that this is just the beginning of Octo’s multiple business.

With that said(typed) and as Octo says(raps)…”get that mulla, buy that ndula”!

Gospel clubs and hype… what’s your take?

The Gospel community may have felt that they have long enough been left out of the “fun” category,

and so they had to create their own. I’m talking about the hype in the clubs and parties that the gospel artistes and DJs are now creating,(see previous article) to cater for those that have never experienced the club life and are innocent at heart. This are events like “Club 3:16”.

This sounds like a good idea to me, but there are those that don’t quite agree with this. Some claim that this is a perfect way of losing the ‘good’ teens to alcohol and night life.

I think this deserves a heated debate. What’s your take on this?

KENYA’S VERY OWN AVICII

One of Avicii’s latest tracks,  ‘Levels’ has been blazing through international dance, pop and trance charts. There’s even Flo Rida’s Americanized version of it, titled ‘Good Feeling’. Well, add the Kenyan twist to it and we have ‘Levels of Nairobi’.

Introducing the very talented and very Kenyan producer, Luther Stunnr of the revolutionary group of Kenyan producers S.N.L (Stunnr New Limits)

He specializes in trance, house, techno and pop with most of his work rivalling the likes of David Guetta and Avicii.

On their Facebook page, S.N.L say they are ‘now a movement of Kenyan producers who are proud workaholics and perfectionists… and are willing to work with any talented artist just because of the love of music.’

Have a look and listen to their latest efforts below, ‘Levels of Nairobi’, a showcase of the best Kenya has to offer, and visually produced by the Tribe Hotel in Kenya.

TOP TRENDS: #NYERITVSHOWS

It seems not just the men, but also the county of Nyeri itself, is being battered by an ‘image’ crisis.

In case you missed it, the recent case of the battering of a man from Nyeri by his wife, Juliana Wairimu, was being heard at the Law Court of Mukurwe-Ini in the county. She is accused of attacking her husband with a panga, cutting him up severely.

Locals of the area recall the old folkore of a Murang’a ‘overlord’/woman, Wangu wa Makeri, who was known as ‘the Terrible’ because she delighted in humiliating the men in her village.

The topic has been the talk of the country in recent times, some even turning it into a parody, as Kenyans on Twitter (#KOT) even made a trending topic based on it ‘ #NyeriTVShows ‘. Users of the social site took to it with such vigour that it just hit the TOP trending worldwide topic on Twitter today, 18th Feb 2012 at around 12.45pm local time.

MTV Shuga Premiere + Red Carpet

The lights were scathingly bright, cameras were in countless and the action was ready and set to take place at the first MTV event in Nairobi since the MAMAs and the MTV Base Launch a couple of years back.

The venue was the Nairobi National Museum and the event was the exclusive red carpet premiere of Shuga; Love, Sex and Money on the 10th of February 2012. Scores of local and international celebrities, media personalities, government and NGO officials graced the launch of what is set to be a phenomenal sequel to the first Shuga series that hit television screens across the globe in 2009.

It is then no wonder that attendees were resigned to an evening chic dress code, to match all the stops that MTV had pulled out to bring the event. The organizers ensured the red carpet was sweepingly long, giving a chance to all the invites to strut their bib and tucker to the delight of paparazzi and the media.

A photobooth with the ‘Shuga’ backdrop ushered guests into the conjoined cocktail area and Premiere Tent. About 350 chairs lined the ca brio space where a giant LCD screen had been laid up to show the world the efforts of MTV, HFG Kenya, USAID and the GOK.

The cocktail area featured complimentary cocktails and delightful snacks, a bar area, a LIVE DJ mix and stylized lamps and lights that gave the elegant design of the inside Museum arena an invigorating ambiance.

I could spot Kalyeke Mumo, resplendent in a flattering cocktail dress with sleeveless black hemming catching up with exquisitely dressed Shuga cast member Brenda Wairimu. She was looking sassy and stunning as ever with her with her pearly accessories and the shiny bangles on her wrist.

Nick Ndeda and MTV VJ Kule Ekirapa were clad in semi-matching crisp clean customed tailored suits, Nick bearing a red tie as Kule’s slim black pencil one rhymed with his pointed Italian footwear. Ifeco Ikubese (Femi in Shuga) didn’t fail to impress the ladies with his red authentic pants and matching tie, along with the cream coat and designer sunglasses that added a hint of mystery.

Other MTV VJ Vanessa looked spectacular in her full black torso skirt, with netted sleeves and old school shoes that definitely set her apart from the crowd. Its clear that people put out all the stops for this classy affair.

When the film was aired, it was evident from audience reactions that the producers had got it right, as everyone was highly animated and emotional throughout the screening.

There will be loads of surprises for fans of the series as it airs on MTV Base on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 10.30, KBC on Tuesdays at 10.30pm, Citizen TV on Mondays at 10.00pm, KISS TV on Sundays at 10.00pm and on Shuga.TV

MC Kah launches his album tonight

If you are a hip hop fan then come tonight at Goethe Institute from 8 to 10pm Nairobi for the album launch of sensational award winning rapper

Kangethe Ngige a.k.a MC Kah who is a member of Ukoo Flani Mau Mau and a younger  brother  of Kamah (Kalamashaka group).

The title of the album is ‘Afree-kah 2012’ which is a continuation of his first album ’subira’. He said that his inspiration was from numerous tours that he did outside the country.

MC Kah is famously known for his hit single ‘Dandora love’ featuring Zakah and Kabee which was a big tune in our local air waves. He was among the artiste who participated in the human rights album ‘kilio cha haki’.

Guess who’s number one on the Reverbnation Charts

The bravest thing an artiste can do is to attempt to remix a hit song.

Huge is the possibility that you will ruin it and make people wish you had just let it be.

That’s not the case with The Godfather though. Clearly, the fans have agreed with his style and so have we. The HAHE remix got a good reception, despite haters saying that Nonini messed up the hit song. So, haters, I ask thee, does topping the Reverbnation National Charts shut you up?

Well, time will tell. In the meantime, no marktiming. The Godfather is moving foward.

Big up Fridays is back!

It disappeared for a while, but now… REJOICE! ‘Big up Fridays’ is back and reloaded.

The ‘bachette’ remix

Have you seen the bachette remix video?…

yap, he’s that fast. This guy seems to be dropping tracks every other day. He recently released another song titled ‘murder‘ that is currently receiving airplay.

Bachette remix has a hilarious video where Bamzigi(face painted) is on the run from psychotic dancing goons. I particularly like the part where he hides behind a chick and the guys just run passed him.

Watch and tell us what you think about Bachette right here.

The most popular lyrics

They did a great collaboration of artistes across Africa to come up with this wonderful song,

all for the Shuga series. A great film can only be accompanied by a great song.

The Shuga title track is a hit… no doubt. It received massive download from the Shuga website, and now the lyrics are the most popular in the Ghafla!Lyrics page.

Banky W, WizKid, L-Tido and our very own Bon’Eye did a great job on this one.

Sing along to the lyrics here.

‘Believer’ topping charts

It is the new song that has everyone viewing, talking and liking and now,

it is the most viewed music video. Titled ‘believer’, the video, which is a work of art, features the artiste himself, Kevin Samuel as the actor. It takes us through a day of two love birds(Ngwatilo and Kevin Samuel) in the streets of Nairobi.

You might recognise Kevin from hit TV series MALI and Changes. Who knew the guy could also sing so well? Just awesome!

The song has an electronic/house fusion beat that gives you the feeling of love and hype. This type of music is rare in Kenya and that is probably why it’s getting such a marvelous reception (despite it being awesome and all).

Watch the video right here and if you don’t like it, you have a messed up taste of good music.

STL`s dad to be laid to rest tomorrow

STL has denied that their family was planning to hold a fundraising to meet his father’s

burial cost as reported by one of the local daily newspaper.

Her manager Mr. Charles speaking on her behalf said that the family was capable of meeting the cost of burying James Mwangi and that all the burial arrangements are complete.

STL dad will be laid to rest tomorrow at their rural home in Maragua. The cottage will leave Kenyatta University funeral home at 9am.

The burial will not be a family affair thus any person can attend. May his soul rest in eternal peace.

The war goes on…

It seems as though this war will never end. Just like corruption,

piracy refuses to die. On Wednesday, The Kenya Copyright Board destroyed a tonne of pirated music and films that was worth Sh.10 million after a crackdown on Ronald Ngala street stores.

Did you know that here ion Kenya piracy for music and film is at 98 percent… so unfortunate. To make it worse, most of the pirated films are p***nographic material.

People found with these pirated material are usually arrested, taken to court and later fined. Those with the p***nographic material are fined up to Sh.400,000.

So, dear pirate, ask yourself… is it realy worth it?

Madtrax latest collabo

The ‘get down’ singer Madtrax has done a collabo with award winning Ugandan

female rapper Keko. The recording was done this week as rapper Keko jetted in the country last Sunday.

The rapper even had time to club with some members of Red Republic on Valentines Day after they had finished the recording.

Madtrax said that the new single will be released soonest after the completion of the video done by Producer Clarence, although they have already done the shooting.

We expect the song to be tight as the artistes are among the best in East Africa and the video must be on top as it`s the work of Nigeria’s finest.

Kenya in the Riddim medleys

I’m loving how Kenyan Reggae artist are trying and succeeding to come up with their own riddims. Jamaican riddims are indeed fabulous,

but as a country of pride I think it’s only natural for us to come up with our own material.

Most Production houses that specialise in the reggae genre in Kenya are now vibrant in the riddim section. Among them are Pacho-‘nipe nafasi riddim’, Mega Records-‘punchline riddim’ and the biggest label being Ark Angel Productions with ‘Falling angel riddim’, ‘Sweet chariot riddim’, ‘Melishya riddim’ and their latest ‘More work riddim’ which includes huge reggae names like Nazizi, Shamir and Fireson. My best Kenyan riddim till date is the ‘sweet chariot riddim’… a big tuuuuuuune!!! Watch it below.

This is a good way to promote Kenyan reggae. The ball is now on our court… let’s buy this albums. Promote this beautiful reggae music. Bless… yes!
