Is Nairobi a safe place to go clubbing?

All the comments about bouncers intelligence quotient aside..

Are revellers safe in Nairobi’s clubs anymore?

Avril tweeted about seeing the injuries a young reveller had visited on his person by not 1, not 2 but 4 burly bouncers at Galileo Lounge over the weekend. The sight has her so shaken up that she has decided not to be going out. This resolve is for her own safety.

The protest tweet may have been put up in innocent protest but it has elicited painful memories of recent events that have occurred in Nairobi’s leading night spots. Last year security associated with Psys Bar in Westland beat a 2nd year engineering student from University of Nairobi: one Denis Adari to death. Earlier this month, security at Click were alleged to have been involved in the death of a patron. This is tom-foolery.

Just what is it about Nairobi’s bouncers that make them act just as brashly as the drunks they encounter? Throw jabs 1st, ask questions last. Is one recruitment criteria for bouncers that they must be willing to throw better judgement out of the proverbial window? Acting like Neanderthals seems to be their greater common denominator.

A bouncer’s job is to maintain the peace at a club not violate patrons. Afterall, i have come to the club to spend my hard earned money on my entertainment. Said money goes to your salary amongst other overheads. Show me some respect and at worst some self-restraint.

Well, what are the security teams’ recourse should i act a fool you ask? They should eject me as peacefully as possible and should i still insist to kick up a storm, they should simply call the cops on me. Bouncers need to understand that when things go south, the establishment will hang them out to dry. Management will always distance itself from the controversy. Just look at what happened at Psys. If i die at the hands of the club’s employees, management will throw them out in the legal cold to fend for themselves and lawyer up with a team of sharks to protect the establishment.

The only time a bouncer can get physical should be to restrain, not to inflict pain& bodily harm. Causing harm contravenes the law. In other words, it is illegal. Again, look at the whole scenario objectively, the lad who was on the receiving end of the altercation was drunk and may or may not have been on the wrong and the bouncers may or may not have had a reason to harm him but again, 4 on 1? How do you justify that? 1st we have the bouncers reasoning on the same plane as the drunk lad then they exhibit utter cowardice by pummeling him as a gang of hooligans. Wouldn’t it have been easier to just call the cops to deal with him? Certainly less bloody.

Think about it, are we safe to enjoy our leisure time at these clubs? One death at the hands of staff is one death too many. Bouncers need to be professional. And the clubs management are to blame. If all you look for in security personnel is muscle, you are as liable as they and just as culpable. Due diligence!

AVRIL TWEET

That is my humble opinion.

Club Click owner released on bail

The first people in Kenya ever to be released on a cash bail and yet they are being accused for murder were

Club Click owner Jackson Maina together with a club bouncer, Joseph Kirero.

The owner was released on a cash bail of one million shillings and a surety of the same amount. The judge was a bit lenient with the bouncer thus releasing him on a cash bail of 200,000 shillings and a surety of Ksh 400,000.

The two are accused for shooting and killing Kevin Owuor Onyango in the Club over a confrontation caused by the loss of a mobile phone.

The two have denied the murder charges and that’s why they were released on bail.

Does Beauty Meet Brain at 2012 Miss World Kenya Search

The age old question of whether beauty does indeed come with brains is admittedly a tough question to answer, but if the ongoing try-outs for Miss World Kenya 2012 are anything to go by, then maybe just maybe things maybe a little bit more simplified.

This year, the quest to crown the country’s representative to the 62nd edition set to be hosted in Mongolia has received a boost from the newest alcoholic drink in Kenya: Snapp, in conjunction with the more traditional sponsor Ashley’s Executive Salon, Barber and Spa.

Beautiful ladies from across Kenya’s corners convulged at the KICC for this year’s edition which has also been packaged as a reality TV show airing every Saturday on KTN from 8.30pm.

Watching some of the responses of beauty Queen hopefuls is a rollercoaster in itself with some promising talent as well as some question marks on whether a number of the contestants gave satisfactoy answers in their discourse with the judges.

One of the contestants repeatedly asked the judge to repeat his question after having been asked what her inspiration was. Another flatly refused to give her second name, stating she simply ‘preferred it that way’. Have a look at the Season Premiere for the search of Kenya’s beauty queen here…

Octopizzo disses Abbas on this new Cypher

He just keeps coming and coming with lyrics and music that are hotter than the previous ones. Cyphers are now the order of the day as every artist is lining up to showcase their lyrical prowess.

A cypher for the Fresh Gum has just been released today and Octopizzo is the mastermind behind it. Always introducing new talent to the industry, Octo comes with two new rappers, one of them being a girl who is even better than some of the rappers we have right now (no offence).

The track of the cypher is done by non other than Creme De La Creme. Octopizzo comes in on the last verse, dissing Abbas as soon as he is on the mic.

I also love the colourful background of the set.

Let the tour continue. DJ Kaytrixx down for Nyeri.

You all know by now that the Kaytrixx Kenya Tour already started. One of the best DJs visiting and playing at some of the best towns in Kenya, one place at a time. If you attended the first stop of the tour which was right here at the Changes Pub, Nairobi, then you know that this is off the hook.

Having already played at Changes (Nairobi), Club Vanillas (Athi River) and Club Signature (Kisumu), DJ Kaytrixx is now set to play at the dramatic town of Nyeri at Club Banana Leaf.

—–>CHECK OUT THE TOUR SCHEDULE.

The party will start from 9PM till dawn and there will be live video mixing with tickets going for Sh. 200. You know what this DJ is capable of so don’t miss this night.

Next stop, Bella Vista (Mombasa) on the 1St of June.

Get ready to laugh your hats off

Motivational master-Ribcracker aka Wakimani will be headlining the show and promises to come nothing short of hilarious.

Kidum signs a lucrative deal with M-Tech

Celebrated artiste Kidum is the latest musician to be signed by MTech, joining the likes of Camp Mulla,

Madtraxx, Abbas, Bamzigi, Jimmy Gait and Uganda’s hip hop sensation Keko.

The soul voiced singer has already released his new single ‘Mungu anaweza’ but it’s yet to be played on our radio stations. Kidum maintains that he’s still a gospel artiste and not secular. The ‘haturudi nyuma’ singer said that it will be much easier working with MTech than him being alone.

His new gospel single was produced by Chris Adwar. The song is meant to encourage those people whose troubles threaten to way them down.

Camp Mulla were the first ever artistes to be taken in by MTech and for this, they are a household group. With this merger, Kidum will be the next big artiste in Africa.

That sad moment when you realize that Prezzo might be coming home this Sunday

This is the UpVille nomination week and yes, it’s all about that awkward feeling that Prezzo might be leaving the house this Sunday considering all the beef and drama that he has managed to attract.

Not so fast though. I think you might want to reconsider that. Seems as though Prezzo is actually loved by his fellow housemates, except one of-course. Barbs is still on his case. This was clearly showed during the UpVille contestants’ nominations for their fellow housemates.

Only Barbs nominated Prezzo for eviction. It is surprising that DKB didn’t go for the same option as Barbs. I think we have some more weeks in the big house. I’m loving this.

Mampi and Maneta on the other hand, am afraid, will not be so lucky.

We now know what Tedd Josiah is up to

He is one of the greatest producers that Kenya has ever seen. He helped create most artistes that are now on everyone’s lips, among them, Necessary Noise, Kalamashaka and Hardstone. After doing all these great work, Tedd Josiah just disappeared from the scene. Just like that.

Well, thanks to our sources, we now know what he has been up to. It is said that a very wealthy Nigerian business man landed Tedd a lucrative deal. This deal has Tedd travelling around three countries, London, Nigeria and South Africa, training people from all over the world, the art of audio and visual production.

Things are even better for him there than they were back home. Seems the producer isn’t planning on coming back anytime soon.

Check out T-Soh. The latest Hip Hop artiste.

He goes by the name T-Soh. I have to say that I never heard of him until I saw his music on Abbas Kubbaf’s facebook wall, then I knew that I was probably missing something explosive. Turns out I was right.

To hear a hip hop track so raw and fresh in this techno and crunk influenced music industry, is just manna from heaven. T-Soh has given us just that with his track titled ‘Kichwa’. i can’t get enough of this track. The lyrics, the voice, the beats, everything about it is just awesome.

T-Soh

T-Soh also sings in the song and amazingly, unlike most rappers, he can actually sing. Talking about all the sick stuff that he has seen in his life and how tired he is of it all. The tune of the song is simply hot.

Have a listen to the song right here.

WOW! Octopizzo goes all emotional on this one. Check this out.

I have been waiting for months for a chance to hear this song again. I first heard it on Ghetto Radio’s hip hop countdown, only to disappear from the music scene. I asked Octo about the song and he said that he is waiting for the right time to release both the song and video. I’m guessing the time is now.

The track ‘MAMA’ is officially out. Is it just me or is this guy getting better and better by every song. There is something about him that just makes you want to listen to what he has to say, and in this song, you really have to listen. It’s not about the hype and the money anymore. It’s all about the love for his late mother.

Octo’s mother, Millicent Onyango was born in 1964 and died in 2003. Octo was still a kid then. It is the unfortunate events in his life that inspired him to do this track, full of emotions and deep in lyrics.

Even when talking about the saddest times of his life, he still drops some awesome punchlines. You just gotta love this… “kwa streets bado mi ndio the bomb ka 9/11.”

Check out the video right here.

KTN’s beautiful news anchor Ann Kiguta will star in Mentality season 2

The second season of the first ever East Africa’s male talk show Mentality will be returning soon on Kenya’s pay TV premium broadcaster Zuku.

The first season was hosted by thespian Ian Mbugua, Easy FM presenter Edward Kwach and Pastor Simon Mbuvi. In this new season KTN’s news anchor Ann Kiguta  will be joining the three panelists as a guest in order to make the talk show more interesting.

This show was meant to educate ladies on how men really think about love, sex and relationships. The first season is still been aired every Wednesdays on K24 TV.

We hope Ann will be able to tame Edward Kwach because he always manages to harass all the female guests.

Avril couldn’t believe that Galileo bouncers could brutally beat someone

It was so shocking for Ogopa queen Avril Nyambura after she saw wounds on someone inflicted by Galileo bouncers on Sunday.

She confirmed that the boy was thoroughly beaten up by four of the club bouncers. The ‘Kitu kimoja’ singer could not believe that bouncers’ could brutally beat someone even if they are on the wrong.

This same incident is what made a young energetic man lose his life after he was shot dead at Club Click. All this scenarios can be avoided if club bouncers are trained on how to deal with disturbing patrons.

Due to this incident, diva Avril has decided that she will never club again.

The Party is Officially Over For BBA Stargame’s Upville

The party is officially over for Upvill-ers who thought they were invincible as Big Brother Africa Stargame entered its third week just yesterday and Downville had already ‘lost’ some of its members. The advantage of getting into the BBA House in doubles finally proved to be more of a boon as housemates were bundled out the same way they came in.

During the Eviction Party that had now come to be unofficially be termed a ‘Downville’ affair, host IK broke the news to contestants in Upville that as of today they will be up for eviction as well. This came as a rude shock to the likes of Manetta, DKB, Barbz and Kenya’s Prezzo, even as they welcomed in Downville’s Zainab (of Sierra Leone) following the exit of Luke, Yadel (of Liberia) and her fellow countrywoman Dalpine.

The VIPs of BBA Stargame will thus be directly nominating each other starting tonight, in contrast to the random nomination that was used in Downville. It will be interesting to see how this will work out for the celebrities, especially seeing as such that Prezzo has been causing ripples in Upville. DKB was rather vocal that as nomination is introduced to Upville, the dynamics of the game would evidently change.

Have a look at Upville’s reaction to the shattering news…

Abbas’ latest single ‘Mtu wa Watu’ video leak

He is one of the best and most consistent Kenyan rapper alive. Never seen away from the music scene and never taken a break from it. That’s a true definition of an artiste right there.

In this music industry, Abbas has seen it all. From scandals (Baby G) to beefs (Chiwawa and Octopizzo), and has managed to rise above them all. He has been to more freestyle battles than you can imagine and has won most of them, if not all. Very few rappers can fit in Abbas’ shoes and this is for real.

With all that has been going on in his life, he has let little out to the media. Finally, he has decided to do a track that covers his personal life. He has finally let us in… kind of.

Produced by Sub-Sahara Records, ‘Mtu wa Watu‘ takes us through Abbas’ musical journey, from F2’s showtime all the way to where he is now, one of the best Kenyan rappers. The video of the song is simple and just what you might expect from a hip hop track.

Here is Abbas’ mtu wa watu video trailer… “true story. Si ati tu story!”

Gideon ‘Sonko’ Mbuvi to record a hip hop track… WTH!

So, word is that Makadara MP, Gedion Mbuvi ‘Sonko’ is about to drop his first ever hip hop song. Yes first, meaning it will not be the last, according to reliable sources.

More information about the song has not been revealed to us yet but will be very soon. I don’t know if he is planning to do a diss track since everyone has been on his case, but one thing is for sure… the video will definitely be as flashy as Prezzo’s videos. No doubt. The amount of bling to be worn on the video shoot on that day, will be unbelievable.

Sonko ras

Another speculation about the song is that it will be an imediate hit. I mean, who wouldn’t want to hear a song done by a member of Parliament, let alone the man ‘Sonko’?

I just can’t wait for the song and read all that Kenyans on Twitter will have to say about it. #dead.

Used Condom Found in the Big Brother House

Things are heating up in the Big Brother House as we enter into the third week of caging the celebrities and commoners in their respective abodes. With all the light flirtations, the kissing and the ocassional rumours of simmering affairs, it all blew up yesterday with a startling discovery.

Namibia’s Jessica found what seemed to be a USED condom carelessly left in the lounge area of Downville, and displayed it to her housemates; some distraught, others disgusted and evidently a few wittingly silent but guilty.

Kenya’s BBA rep Malonza could be seen lurking around in the latest video feed, as other housemates hissed and displayed their shock.

The biggest question however, remains. Who had sex in the Big Brother House?

Have a look at the video below and tell us who you think ‘did it’…

These are the best and worst acts in TPF5 Rwanda and Meru auditions

TUSKER Project Fame has always produced top musicians in East Africa, but during the auditions we are always subjected

to watch one of the best comedians in the region in terms of funny singing.

TPF5 auditions are over and judges have already chosen the best singers who will come to Nairobi and try their luck (if they will be among the best 25 people who will enter the academy).

Rwanda and Meru show cased their best talents although we were subdued to watch some hilarious acts. These comedians are the people who make TPF to be what it is because they are part of the drama.

Camp Mulla Finally Perform at BBA Stargame Eviction Party

After a series of cancellations and postponements, including what speculators termed as ‘bad blood’ between the BBA: Stargame organizers and their representatives, Camp Mulla finally proved critics wrong and made their debut performance at Africa’s BIGGEST reality TV show over the weekend.

Miss Karun, Taio Tripper and Young Kass had spent the better part of the morning at Sandton Central, Johannesburg preparing for their appearance at the Big Brother Africa Stargame Eviction party which was aired  late last night and eventually saw Dalphine (of Sierra Leone), Yadel and Luke (of Liberia) being evicted from the show.

Camp Mulla have been riding high on the waves of success following the release of ‘Fresh All Day’, ‘Addicted’ and ‘Hold It Down’ this year, all of which have received airplay on both local and international radio and television stations.

The crowd at the eviction party was clearly revved up as the rappers bounced onto the stage, dropping rhymes to their popular 25 Flow number ‘Fresh All Day’.

Have a look at a video of the performance below and tell us if you think they pulled it off…

Media Council Lashes Out Over Uhuru’s Party Launch Requirements

The Media Council of Kenya has today come out strongly against individuals, organizations and groups that hold events and ask the media to apply for accreditation in order to attend the events.

The official press release which was out today reads:

The Media Council of Kenya (MCK) is an independent national institution established by the Media Act 2007 as the leading institution in the regulation of media and in the conduct and discipline of journalists and the media in Kenya. It is mandated to among other things; promote high professional standards among journalists, register and accredit journalists and media establishments and ensure safety and protection of journalists.

Our attention has been drawn to the requirement by organizers of an event scheduled for this weekend that journalists covering the event need to apply for accreditation. The Media Council of Kenya wishes to state categorically that it finds such conditionality for covering a news event a violation of the fundamental right of journalists to access information as guaranteed in our laws.

The Council is the only body mandated to register all journalists practicing in Kenya in accordance to sections 4(k), 13(2), 19(1) and 36 of the Media Act 2007. This process facilitates the authentication of genuine journalists from the “quacks” and also ensures the protection of the rights and privileges of journalists in the performance of their duties. We therefore wish to clarify that journalists already accredited by the Council and who hold the MCK card need no further clearance to access sources and events in this country.

Further, we want to state that providing lunch or any other form of inducement that may be construed to be designed to influence the work of a journalist is expressly prohibited by the following articles in our Code of Conduct for the Practice of Journalism in Kenya (as enshrined in the Second Schedule of the Media Act 2007):

Independence which provides that: “Journalists should defend the independence of all journalists from those seeking influence or control over news content. They should gather and report news without fear or favour, and vigorously resist undue influence from any outside forces, including advertisers, sources, story subjects, powerful individuals and special interest groups. Journalists should resist those who would buy or politically influence content or who would seek to intimidate those who gather and disseminate news”.

Integrity which provides that: “Journalists should not accept gifts, favours or compensation from those who might seek to influence coverage as well as engaging in activities that may compromise their integrity or independence”.

BBA news: Kenyan chances of winning BBA increase as Nigerian contestants exit the house

It was very sad when Nigerian representatives at the Big Brother house decided to voluntarily exit Big Brother house for medical reasons.

Chris and Ola were forced to exit the Downvill house because of Ola’s medical condition. Ola told Biggy that the BBA medical personnel advised him to get medical help outside Big Brother’s house after his blood pressure kept on escalating.

This news saddened Big Brother, although he acknowledged that individual’s health is very paramount to him. Biggy accepted their request although he said that he will indeed miss them.

This means that Nigerian chances of winning the prize money now relies on Goldie. This is sad, but it’s also an advantage to Kenyan representatives because their chances of winning have increased.

Check Chris, Ola and Biggy’s conversation below here>>>>>

The ‘Abbachiwa show’ is officially out! Check it out.

The much anticipated Abbas and Chiwawa video for their latest collaboration, ‘Abbachiwa show’ is finally released. The song was available to fans since the beginning of the year.

The reconciliation of the two recently beefing artistes has been a positive move in the Kenyan music industry, considering all the other beefs that are building up.

We recently posted about the video leak of the song and now, weeks later, it’s finally out. I don’t understand why the two fell out in the first place because you can clearly see the good vibe that they have on the set. If these two artistes would record an album together, kind of like what Nas and Damian Marley did, it would be off the hook.

Check the video that is about to make everyone go crazy over the collaboration.

I know that this one is old…

DJ Adrian Turns 13?

One of the most established DeeJays in the Kenyan industry, Capital FM’s DJ Adrian celebrates his birthday today.

DJ Adrian Washika has been DJying for over 13 years and his mastery of the decks he is accustomed to is clearly evident in his tagline: ‘Your DJ’s favourite DJ’. The disc jockey is massively popular for his segments on Capital FM’s Friday flight on Capital in the Morning, as well as for a select number of events he chooses to perform at.

The genres he concentrates on are old school music, new jack swing and RnB, but he has an ecclectic taste for the dynamic Kenyan party crowd.

Ghafla! wishes DJ Adrian a HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

BBA news: Rapper Collo claims that he was supposed to be in BBA instead of Prezzo

A week after the self proclaimed king wa rap came out open in support of Prezzo in this year’s Big Brother Africa competition, word has it that

he was the one who was supposed to be in the house instead of Prezzo.

According to Zuqka, Collo said that they were in negotiations with Big Brothers organizers about him being Kenya’s celebrity representative in the house, but apparently they sidelined him for Prezzo.

Collo claims that the reason they sidelined him was because he asked them to meet all his financial needs for the three months that he would have been in the house.

I hope this accusation will not bring bad blood between Collo and Prezzo, but king wa rap still maintains that he support Prezzo and wishes him all the best.

We want gritty hiphop!

Why aren’t Kenyans putting out gritty music anymore?

While i understand that even globally there has been a shift away from masculine& gritty hiphop to the more soothing bubblegum hiphop i for one want to hear more real material.

Rapping about parties, blunts& shorties is all good but why are our artists ignoring real issues? Maybe i’m nostalgic about the days when radio stations& music shows were too scared to air Kenyan content (shame on you!).

Back then, Octopizzo was cutting his teeth at WAPI? and Juliani was being mentored by Ukoo Flani Mau Mau. And btw, shout out to these two artists who are the last of a dying breed.

do you remember these songs:

Kenya’s Jason Dunford Featured on International Website

Kenya’s international swimming sensation, Jason Dunford, has been featured in the latest edition of Swim News, the leading international website on everything to do with swimming.

The 2010 Commonwealth Games double gold winner has finished his studies at Stanford University in the US and is shifting to the UK to join the prestigious Andrea Di Nino (ADN) Swim Project which is an international academy of sorts for some of the world’s best swimmers.

“By rejoining ADN I got this opportunity to train at high altitude and also will be able to race in (a number of) meets,” Dunford told SwimNews.

He touches on his experiences at the American University as well as what he looks forward to at the ADN Swim Project.

Dunford was placed 4th in the 100m butterfly at the Shanghai World Championships in 2011 but won the gold medal for the same category at the All Africa Games in Maputo.

Namtero is back on Kenyan radiowaves

Former SRT8 up presenter Namtero Mdee may be returning back to showbiz after quitting her previous job at

the Standard Group television department, KTN.

Word out is that the sassy presenter has been in talks with one of the leading radio station who wants to tap her services. I think that her experience and talent is what the media owner is after because Tero is one of the few personalities that posses both of this.

This lucrative offer has made Tero to retract her statement that she will never come back to the limelight again.

Tero is expected back in the country any time from now because she landed the job last week, and now the only remaining thing is contract signing.

Oleey Oleey: Hit or Miss?

With all the hype surrounding the track “Oleey Oleey” by Jimmy Gait featuring Holy Dave& Chuchu…

The question that is on everyone’s lips is is it a hit or a miss.

IMG 9548

The lovely Chuchu

Well, we here at Ghafla have decided to review the track to let you know just what we think of it’s “hit or miss” quotient.

For starters, the track is an uplifting, feel good gospel track that asks the listener to either make it or make it. The first verse has a lingala influenced sound and the second a Nigerian pop influenced sound that the producer blanded really well and Jimmy delivered well. The kicker is the 3rd verse which has Holy Dave spitting ill rhymes in a traditional hiphop manner that most hiphop heads will appreciate and he delivers it in a manner that compliments the lingala instrumental. Listening to the track i couldn’t help but think of J Martin’s Jupka remix which had Fally ipupa on it..

And the chorus? My goodness the chorus! Chuchu has held her own vocally with the heavyweights! She has delivered a timam chorus which for me was the highlight of the jam given that she is a complete novice; a newcomer to the scene yet she has exuded confidence in her delivery and she kept up with, nay! Enhanced the chemistry between all three artists.

I think this is a definite hit! Conquer Kenyan charts it shall. Let’s wait and see how it will fare in the rest of Africa.

Good news. Big Brother StarGame data services to resume today

Ever since the Big Brother StarGame kicked off, it has been full of nothing but entertainment, and it just keeps on getting better by the day. But alas! It gets even better. Remember the value added services that were previously available for subscribers? Well, they are back!

The services had been suspended briefly due to some technical challenges. DStv earlier today confirmed to Ghafla!Kenya that the Big Brother Stargame data services will be resuming today (18Th May) from 3PM. This service includes updated news, housemate profiles and voting information. You get to know anything and everything about Big Brother StarGame and its contestants by just pressing the ‘OK’ button on your DStv remote.

Wait, that’s not all (Ohhh you’ll love this). Since the Stargame started, the two houses (UpVille and DownVille) have been taking turns on the DStv live video stream channel 198. We’ve been missing a lot during these few minutes. Now that is all over. Rejoyce Stargame viewers, for there is a new DStv channel dedicated to showing only one of the houses while the previous one shows the other, simultaneously, 24/7. Channel 197 will be available from 3PM today.

Seven Kenyans are Finalists for the 2012 CNN Multichoice Africa Journalist of the Year Awards

The 2012 CNN Multichoice Africa Journalist of the Year Award finalists have just been announced, pitting together a total of 34 journalists from 12 countries across the continent for over 16 categories which will be awarded at a gala ceremony in Lusaka, Zambia on the 21st of July 2012.

Africa’s most prestigious journalism awards received a record number of entries from a total of 42 countries, including French and Portuguese speaking countries.

“The growing quality of the entries we pored over is a reflection of a growing continent claiming its place in the sun,” said Ferial Haffajee, Chair of the Independent Judging Panel. “We were impressed by the enhanced quality and competitiveness of the work before us; by the heart and soul poured onto pages and into pixels; by the adventurist spirit of the entries which came from more countries than ever before.  In print, in radio, in television it is clear that African journalism is in a growth spurt, claiming its stake as world-class and globally competitive. A bit like our continent.”

As part of the run up to the awards ceremony, an all expenses paid five day programme of workshops, media forums and networking has been set up for each of the finalists.

A total of seven Kenyans have been shortlisted for the awards this year and include Tom Mboya & Evanson Nyaga (Citizen TV), Nimrod Taabu Mwagamoyo & Charles Kinyua Kariuki (NTV Kenya) Waihiga Mwaura & Jephitha Mwai Mwangi (Citizen TV Kenya) and finally John Muchangi Njiru (The Star).

Nokia has come on board as one of the sponsors of the 17th edition of the awards, joining IPP Media of Tanzania, the Coca Cola Company, the African Development Bank, Ecobank, Ericsson, UNICEF, A24 Media and Merck Sharp & Dohme (MSD).

“We are honoured once again to be a part of these awards which contribute immensely in shaping freedom of speech and a healthy and vibrant media.” added Nico Meyer, Multichoice Africa CEO.

The hosts for the evening will be CNN International’s Isha Sesay and Franklin Tembo Jnr of ZNBC.

Introducing the new Ghafla song rating system

Attention artists; aspiring, underground and mainstream…

After searching for a homogeneous method of rating songs it is my pleasure to present to you the new rating system:

GHAFLA SONG RATING SYSTEM

The 5 Ghafla’s are for truly awesome songs. Songs that have gotten all the elements that could possibly go into making a song awesome right. These would include lyrics, instrumentals, chemistry between artists (in the event of a collaboration) &in the event it is a video getting reviewed, video, audio and video quality &the choreographical content& presence.

GHAFLA SONG RATING SYSTEM 4STAR

The 4 Ghafla’s are for good songs. Songs that although good, don’t seem to have gotten all the elements right hence no eargasm.

GHAFLA SONG RATING SYSTEM 3STAR

The 3 Ghafla’s are for rating average songs. songs that have talented emcees or artists on them or ace instrumentals but lack a good instrumental or good vocals respectively. These tracks were not equally carried by both parties involved i.e emcee& producer.

We here at Ghafla believe in keeping it positive and appreciating everyone’s effort at making music so the lowest rating is:

GHAFLA SONG RATING SYSTEM 2STAR

This simply means that the track needs abit more time& effort invested in it.

For instance, Life History by Jackiwa would get a 5 Ghafla rating:

Woah! Knaan in a movie with Robert Pattinson (Twilight star)

From one of his first tracks ever produced (went something like… ‘galasoba galasoba’) in which he did in the Somali language and the video shot in Eastleigh, you could tell that the young artiste was destined for greater stuff.

Knaan who is now based in the UK, has added another feather to his cap. He has joined the movie scene and things are already looking good for the rapper.

Knaan will be starring alongside Twilight Saga’s main character, Robert Pattinson in the soon to be launched and much anticipated movie, Cosmopolis. The movie, produced by renowned producer David Cronenberg is already headlining the media even before release.

Cosmopolis will debut at the Cannes Festival on the 23Rd of May 2012 and by the look of the trailer, will be a huge hit.

Watch the trailer below.

Ghafla Exclusive! Africa’s Biggest Gospel Hit

Sensational award winning artiste Jimmy Gait is back with another hit song ‘Oleey oleey’ featuring talented gospel rapper Holy Dave and up-coming singer Chuchu. Listen to the song here.

Jimmy confirmed to Ghafla in an exclusive interview that the song is a motivational one and that it’s intended to motivate many young people not to give up even when there is no money, but to believe in God and oneself.

This song is part of Jimmy’s Make it or make it campaign, where he is trying to inspire young people to work hard no matter the obstacles. In God they can trust.

The song is a fusion of Lingala, West Africa and Niger, but gospel’s hip hop sensation Holy Dave complements it with a hip hop swag.

The song’s video, which was produced by Africa’s most sought after video producer Clarence Peters will be released by the end of next week.

Listen to the song down here>>>>> and get to know why it’s the next big thing in Africa’s music industry.

Artistes running Mombasa

Producer Toti from Ka Records in Mombasa was the brains behind this  union formed for Coast artistes.

The group, We Run Mombasa, consists of most of the best of Mombasa artistes and Deejays, among them being Dj Gates, Real Flick, Chapatizzo just to mention a few.

The new group has already released a track titled ‘we run MSA’ and released the video just last week. The song is currently receiving airplay especially on the Coast radio stations.

For years, there has been a kind of a snub of Coast music by the Nairobi radio stations and this has made the Mombasa artistes feel the need to stretch to extra lengths to get airplay for there music.

Kenyans Petition Local Stations Over Soap Opera Craze

Kenyans on social media networks are once again seeking to exert the influence they now firmly believe they possess to petition local television stations to alter their programming.

The petition, which was filed to Internet Petitions (iPetitions) on 16th May 2012, features a request to a select number of stations to ‘improve the quality’ of programming particularly by reducing the number of soap operas shown during prime time screening, which is considered the hours between 5.00pm and 10.00pm each day.

While acknowledging that the soap operas screened at these times are indeed popular, the creator of the petition insisted that there are a vast majority of Kenyans who are ‘suffering’ in silence though they share similar views. CCK is included in the signage, as the petitioner requests Kenya’s broadcasting control body to pursue their mandate of ensuring quality control.

The goal of this petition is to reach 100,000 signatures. So far they have 41.

iPetitions claims to be the most successful online activism tool, though governments in the West are weary of such online practices mainly because of the anonymity involved as wwell as the fact that the petitions are basically open to anyone with an internet connection.

Interesting successful online petition cases include one to the Prime Minister of the UK in 2007 over car tracking and road pricing which attracted over 1.8million signatures (the UK’s population was estimated at around 60 million at the time).
