This Friday welcomes Slam Africa

This is the event that is giving great competition to Kwani Open Mic. It’s all about the poems/spoken word and freestyles.

Slum Africa showcases the art that is on the mic here in Kenya from artistes that should be getting more recognition than they are receiving already.

Slum Africa will be held at the Dass Ethiopian Restaurant in Westlands on the 18Th of May from 7PM till 11PM.

Entrance to go for Sh. 500. Be there.

The second edition of ‘From Paris With Love’ is finally here

After the first edition of this hyper event, you know all too well that there had to be another one of this crazy night, and here it if… Finally!

From Paris with Love was and again will be brought to you by The French Connection to the famous Tree House, Museum Hill on the 18Th of this month (that’s this Friday ya’ll)!

Electro House music will be the sound of the night, controlled by Jean-Marie Erik from 10PM till late.

Entrance to the venue will be for Sh. 500, strictly to persons over 21 years of age.

This Kisii music video is a huge hit.

Here at Ghafla!Kenya, we’re still trying hard to understand what made this music video get so many views on YouTube and rounds on the social media. Not that we are criticizing or anything, it is just a little bit weird.

Maybe it’s the funny dances or the ‘out of this world’ costumes that gave the video 547, 817 views and counting. This is higher than any other Kenyan music video after Jaguar’s Kigeugeu by the way. Yes, it’s that big.

I cannot understand a word in the song so I’m really not sure about the lyrics. You guys really have to help us out on this one. Check it out.

Jaguar responds to Prezzo’s ‘ignorance’

It seems that these two competing artistes will go to any length to trash each other. Prezzo says this, later Jaguar says that. Why don’t we just have a music battle between these guys when Prezzo comes back from the BBA.

Recently, Big Brother asked Prezzo if he knew the song ‘kigeugeu’ and the artiste that sang it. This is what he had to say, “I have never heard of him before. Maybe he’s a small time artist”. Really?…Prezzo?

Later in an interview of Ghetto Radio with Jaguar, having being told about Prezzo’s comments, this is what Jaguar said, “I pray that he wins that money because he needs it. He is the one who decided to be locked up in a house, but personally that can’t happen to me, it will be like being in boarding school. If Prezzo does not know me then he is not from Kenya because my song was ranked number one in East Africa.”

This beef should be settled the professional way just like Bebe Cool and Boby Wyne did it in Uganda.

Paul Mwai with the Kikuyu flavour

The ever consistent gospel musician Paul Mwai is on it again. Having released the video for his latest song just yesterday, he is not holding back on the vocals.

His new song, ‘Murangiri’ perfectly brings out his voice. The vocals are just great. The thing is, the whole song is in the Kikuyu language with English subtitles. Still, you don’t have to understand the words for you to know that he killed the track.

With a female vocalist in the background on the chorus, it just gets sweeter. Not to mention the saxophonist after every chorus. Whether you listen to gospel or not, this is good music. It really is. Check it out.

Rosy Ohon on the latest gospel track

Beautiful and strong voiced Rosy Ohon just hit the music waves with a new track that promises to have the mature gospel music industry in the palm of her hands.

The song, ‘Nibariki’, as the name already explains, talks about the importance of God’s blessings and how much we/she are/is eager for them. Produced by Gamba Records, the Divine lyrics are simple and smooth.

What’s more to love about this song? The fact that gospel music videos are now getting better and better by every new song is something to acknowledge. The song’s video, which has most of its scenes on the Nairobi University grounds, is simply eye catching thanks to Ogopa Videos.

Rosy is beautiful and well dressed in the video as always and you just can’t help but enjoy the song and the video. Very well done Rosy Ohon.

Check out the video below.

Where is c’zars?

Just where is C’Zars?

This reminds me of a book i used to read called “Where’s Wally” in which you were meant to locate Wally. Moving right along, does anyone have any idea where this chap is? His father even put a reward on any information that would result in his discovery &/or safe return but thus far there have been no takers.

The lad was responsible for giving us a slew of hits back in 2006 then just before sitting for his KCSE he simply vanished. All efforts that made to try and trace the chap have borne little fruit, the most being information about him shacking up with some elderly woman in Eastleigh.

I shall refrain from making fun of the whole situation (which is actually very hard to do). Let me just say that the lad really needs to get back home and back to giving us hits instead of galivanting around “Mogadishu Ndogo” with some old lady. That ofcourse is if the whispers about his whereabouts have an ounce of truth in them.

That is my humble opinion.

Ghafla! Exclusive: Coola Gang Up Close & Candid

Kenyan hardcore hip hop group Coola Gang are fast approaching the pinnacle of Kenyan lyrical profeciency, what with a steady and growing fanbase and the re-emergence of the genre in Kenya, the future may only be ripe for the taking.

We caught up with the crew recently and had a chat with members Kapella, GnX and Shukid as they touched on pertinent issues such as the quality of local music videos as well as the music and how  they believe firm funding would ressurect the industry and get them where they want to be.

Coola Gang are calling on Kenyan music lovers to be open-minded and for the media not to dictate trends but give the people what they want… thus the Peoples Choice Cypher? In the interview you will also find out what were the crew’s most memorable performances and what we should look forward to from them.

Shukid of Coola asks us to stop concentrating on whats already there and open upto upcoming artistes and the rest who have crazy talent. If you were asked which hip hop artists you look upto in Kenya, they swear that about 95% Kenyans would mention someone from abroad, mainly because they believe the industry has very few options.

Interesting to note was a gospel artiste they look up to, as well as a possible collaboration with a female rapper that would surely be a great hit. Find out what sets Coola Gang apart from the rest, when we should expect their mixtape or album out and whether or not there truly is beef between Coola Gang and Camp Mulla…all in the podcast below…

Jaguar snubs this woman’s advances

Celebrated Kenyan singer Jaguar has never confirmed that he’s dating any one, and for this reason a lovely Ugandan

lady decided to try her luck and see if she can be the lucky girl in the singer’s life.

Check the photo

jaguar by creme

This happened when Jaguar was performing at Club Rouge in Museveni’s land. I think the ‘Kigeugeu’ singer was not interested as he didn’t notice the lovely thighs.

Jaguar should come out and tell the ladies if he’s searching for one.

So who is the best producer?!

So just who is Kenya’s CURRENT premier hit maker?

So you had a hit 3yrs ago? Cute! But this article isn’t for you. So you produced a hit that is still running the airwaves but it’s 5yrs old? Then this article has nothing for you!

This article is for the current “it” kids! The instrumental super heroes. Currently how many do we have?

well we’ll start at number 5:

#5 Chuo Records- You don’t know them aye? But i do and i love what they did with the violins on this piece:

#4 Lampstand Records- okay so this song was released last year aye? But a year hasn’t yet gone by and the production work was so sublime that it made Daddy Owen actually sound like a world class crooner

{youtube}ohlIj9ikruw{/youtube}

#3 YGB Records- Who? you ask? My my! haven’t we been under a rock! these rae the guys who do Octopizzo’s tracks. *Aaaaaaah!* I knew you’d get it!

{youtube}OLLUtw8vKEY{/youtube}

#2 Homeboys -Not only do they do urban hits, they also do gospel productions that we all know and love! You think not? Here’s one such track and though it’s urban, you get my point.

{youtube}7yBQtQsPy_E{/youtube}

and for #1 *drum rolls*

#1 K’Cous- Given the lads young age and the type of instrumentals he’s producing for both himself and Camp Mulla, you can’t help but give the top spot to him.

{youtube}xxb0cmA_kLE{/youtube}

If you aren’t on my list it’s simply because you aren’t popping so let’s put in more of an effort into music production. And Matasia Star gets honourable mention. I LOVE this song!

{youtube}W9jqsJ9VJ-Y{/youtube}

This is my humble opinion.

Sarabi performs alongside Anthony Faulkner in Oslo

The gospel band, Sarabi, comprising of eight musicians was in Oslo, Norway last week for a concert aimed at spreading the gospel, dubbed Soul Children Party.

The event occurred from the 11Th of May till the 13Th. The Kenyan culture was well illustrated with the band and the crowd could definitely tell what country they were representing even without introduction.

Sarabi was also joined by reknowned American gospel RnB singer, Anthony Faulkner.

Various choirs and artistes also performed at the event which was well attended as sources say.

The blazing DJ will then get back on the decks on the 8Th of July for the Sunday eviction party. Good thing is that whoever will be evicted will have a good time coming out of the house, thanks in advance to DJ Joe Mfalme.

Female bouncer dies after a grenade attack at Club Bella Vista

It is confirmed that a female bouncer from Club Bella vista in Mombasa lost her life following the

grenade attacks. Five people were injured during the incident that happened yesterday at 9.30pm.

Witnesses say that the attackers had been denied entry by the club bouncers after they resisted the normal security inspections and that’s when they threw the explosives into the club. One of the attackers dropped a handgun when they were escaping after the tragic incident.

Regional police chief said, ”we lost one of the victims, a lady who was a security guard at the club, she died in hospital.’’

The injured were rushed to Coast General Hospital and The Agha Khan hospital.

New Camp Mulla Material

So Camp Mulla member K’Cous has dropped a track featuring Camp Mulla affiliate Idris Jones called “Green on the Regular” that is basically a stoner’s anthem.

The track which is heavy on the basslines has a staccato hook which has a voice (i believe a lass’) on loop and the chorus is a male voice on loop that says “This is for my n***az that smoke green on the regular”. All in all, wonderful production work that we’ve come to expect from Camp Mulla and K’Cous with aligned vocals and instrumentals: harmony!

As usual, the lyrical chemistry between the 2 MCs is tangible and that brings the song to lifeut honestly, the song should come with a lyrical advisory sticker as it is full of mature vocabulary and even the concept is mature but all in all, an awesome song!

Check it out for yourselves:

‘Tabasamu’ Actress Passes On

Information just in from our sources reveals that an actress in what used to be Citizen TV’s popular show Tabasamu, has passed on.

The actress is Silvia Wangai (Mama Wavina) news on the cause of death is still scanty, but she is believed to have passed on sometime early last week, around 5th May 2012 after a short illness. We will keep you updated as news of confirmation trickles in.

TABASAMU aired every monday on Citizen TV afrom 9:40pm and Rosemary was a ‘sugar mummy’ in character of course. She was the mother to Wavina where her scenes on the programme became highly criticized by most viewers (especially parents) with the claims of eroding family and society morals and made the KenTV production do away with the script she played.

The synopsis of Tabasamu is:

‘revolving around the lives of three young , upward mobile professional women who share an apartment. It’s about their day-to day challenges and social issues in their lives, their relationship with each other, the men in their lives.’

Friends, family and fans have been pouring condolence messages on her Facebook profile page. You can comment your condolence messages below…

‘Dakika tatu’ is Ghafla song of the week

Award winning gospel artiste Daddy Owen is one of the best gospel singers we have. He won Groove awards male

artiste of the year three times in arrow.

His song ‘Dakika tatu’ is one of the best inspirational songs ever done in Kenya. The dramatization was superb, but the message was fantastic.

This was a well done song and it happens to be Ghafla video of the week. Watch the video

Kenya’s BBA representative Alex is doing wonders in the house

We have all been talking about Prezzo’s issues in the Big Brother house, but we forgetting

that we have other representatives in the same place.

Alex who is also Kenya’s representative in the Big Brother house (downvile) is also doing wonders. He managed to show Liberia’s representative that Kenyan men are smooth operators, and for this he got a big smooch from her.

All this happened when Alex and Yadel found their way to bed where the Kenyan did what any man would do. Hope to see more drama from Alex.

Celebs Speak Out on What They Think About Homosexuality

It seems American President Barrack Obama has opened a whole can of worms again with his public support for gay marriage in his country, with reverberations felt across the world with a multitude of mixed reactions even right here in Kenya.

The Kenya National Commission on Human Rights for instance took this opportunity to continue the push for the acceptance of homosexual marriages in Kenya but the National Council of Churches came out strongly against the move.

“We are concerned that the direction the debate has taken is that of the recognition of homosexuality and prostitution which are against African beliefs and more so our Christian beliefs” argued NCCK Secretary General Peter Karanja in a press briefing on May 11th 2012.

Television stations have also joined the bandwagon of debate, with KTN previously airing a feature called ‘Muffled Killers’ about homosexual prostitution as well as NTV having a discussion on their morning show about the issue just this week.

One FM have gone a step further today approaching some celebrities on the Drive Show with Adelle and asking them their views on homosexuality, and here were a few of the responses:

Avril – I draw the line on personal choices, I respect everyones personal choices

Big Pin – Ai! I don’t support gay marriages!

J’Mani – I have my reservations about it but I’m ok with it

Holy Dave – Its obvious I don’t believe in them.I love women, women should love men. Guys think it’s cool but there’s nothing cool about it

Wawesh – It’s either or. Some things are up to the individual. It should be up to every individual how they want to live their life

Other artistes who commented on the issue included Nick Mutuma and DNA.

The History of Project Fame

With Tusker Project Fame Season 5  officially underway in East Africa, West Africa isn’t far behind as the region is also set to host its fifth edition ‘coming soon’.

The catch phrase is the same as ours – ‘The Biggest Ever’ – and promises to be the best Project Fame to date. In West Africa though, the title sponsor is mobile communication provider MTN and has seen a series of 4 successive seasons since its inception in June 2010.

tpf mtn stars

Former MTN Project Fame Stars

Both Tusker Project Fame and MTN Project Fame are local versions of the Star Academy which was initially a Spanish reality TV show developed and licensed worldwide by Endemol. It is developed and repackaged in over 50 countries worldwide where the format is almost similar: pop music talent showing and viewer voting to make eliminations to the final best.

The versions may be different across regions and countries, but the format is basically the same, with contestants staying at ‘The Academy’ where they are coached on various performance and musical disciplines. While boarding at this location, they are monitored by viewers via camera, which was an idea borrowed from the other Endemol reality show Big Brother, thereafter they have weekly performances to battle it out to stay in the Academy through the highest number of votes.

There are occassional guest star performances by local or international celebrities and the eventual winner is handed a recording deal and a cash prize.

The first country to broadcast the Star Academy was France in October 2001, though the idea belonged to the Spanish version which went on air just two days later. The first Project Fame on the continent was held in Johannesburg, South Africa in 2004, and brought together participants from over 8 different countries. It was won by Zambia’s Lindiwe Alam.

The inaugural East African version, Tusker Project Fame, started in 2006 with Kenya’s Valerie Kimani winning the title.

Sauti Sol new single featuring rapper Collo set to toklezea very soon

Sensational band Sauti Sol managed to blend very well with talented hip hop group P-Unit when they did ‘Gentleman’,

which was a big tune in the local and international music scene

Word has it that the celebrated Kenyan group will be releasing a new song titled ‘Tattoo’ featuring the self proclaimed king wa rap Collo. I hope rapper Collo will stick to rapping because that’s what he’s good at.

The song has been produced by super producer Ulopa Ngoma. Sauti Sol hint that this single will be the biggest song they have done, so expect it to be better that ‘Gentleman’.

2012 CNN Multichoice Africa Journalist of the Year Awards to be held in Zambia

The 2012 CNN Mulitchoice Africa Journalist of the Year awards have drawn a step closer as the judging panel completed its decision this past week on the large number of entries received.

For the first time in its 17 year history, the awards will be held in the Zambian capital, Lusaka, with the Multi-choice general manager Simon Bota saying the awards this year would consist of 16 categories which include an Art and Culture Award, Digital Journalism Award, the Coca-cola Company Economic and Business Awards.

Other recognitions to be given out, among others, include the Environmental Awards, Free Press Africa Award and the HIV and AIDS Reporting Award, Radio general news, and Television News Award.

The judging panel, which consisted of industry greats such as South Africa City Press Editor in Chief Ferial Haffajee and media consultant Joel Kibazo, met in London over the last week of April 2012 to sift through the extensive list of entries to come up with nominees for this year’s edition.

Most of the judges felt that there was an increasing confidence in journalist entries, as well as a clearer African story that was being told in fresh and diverse ways.

The previous winner of the CNN Multichoice Africa Award was Kenya’s Fatuma Noor of the Star Newspaper, as entries received were close to 2.000 from over 44 countries across the continent.

It’s all about Valerie Kimani on the 1st of June

This is one live band concert you don’t want to miss. I repeat… LIVE BAND CONCERT… VALARIE KIMANI, ANTO NEOSOUL AND PATRICAI KIHORO. It doesn’t get better than this.

Bamzigi’s new track, ‘Light It Up’

He made a huge comeback to the music industry after going M.I.A on it for personal reasons that are now behind him. He made it all worthwhile when he came back with a new look, attitude and flow of music.

Bamzigi brought us the new genre of music that he calls ‘MZUKA’ and he illustrated it in the ‘Bachette’ that was full of energy and a fusion of different types of music and we loved it.

He has now done a new track titled ‘Light it up‘ that is set to be out in two weeks. The track produced by Provoke is ready and waiting on the video which is currently being done by BigBoi Productions.

“We did the track on a Hip Hop Mizuka beat. We mixed electronic elements with those of Hip Hop and it will be out in two weeks,” Bamzigi told Ghafla!Kenya.

Judging from his recent tracks, I just can’t wait for this one and you will get it exclusively on Ghafla!

What’s the reason behind Camp Mulla not performing at BBA?

Our sensational hip hop crew Camp Mulla was scheduled to perform at Big Brother Stargame first eviction night, but they didn’t.

They didn’t explain the reason for not being able to travel to South Africa. The group has a fan base all over Africa, and them missing to perform in such a big event is a big disappointment.

The group was first schedule to perform alongside America’s hip hop sensation J Cole during the launch of Big Brother, but they could not travel because there was delay in the processing of their travelling documentation.

I hope it’s not the same issue that is keeping them from traveling to South Africa, because if it’s that, then our immigration department will be failing Kenya as a whole.

The biggest show yet… The Traffic Jam Concert

Set for the 17Th of May 2012, this is the show that will be headlined by most artistes. I mean, almost all of your favorite musicians will be performing at this night.

The event dubbed ‘The Traffic Jam’ is a showcase for a new record label, Kaz Music that is owned by the one and only Kaz. Bamzigi to co-host 1FM’s popular 1Drive Show… awesome!

The creator of the ‘mzuka’ genre of music might just be the latest addition to 1FM’s list of presenters. Those of you that haven’t met the dude yet, you should know that he knows how to hold a good conversation and is actually very interesting, so expect nothing but the best entertainment/conversations from him.

“I cannot yet confirm this because negotiations are still ongoing. You will be the first to know though,” Bamzigi told Ghafla!Kenya.

1FM‘s most popular and one of the high rated shows, 1Drive will be welcoming the artiste to their studios to team up with the lovable Adelle for the evening show which airs on weekdays from 4PM to 7PM.

As most people are still wondering if Bamzigi will fulfill expectations, we are sure that he will most definitely be a hit alongside Adelle.

Stay tuned for the show.

Eko Dydda In Studio Working On His Next Video

Gospel artiste Eko Dydda, the 2012 Groove Award Male Artist of the Year, is in the studio working on his next video, the ‘Beautiful People’.

With hit singles such as Psalms 23 and Ghetto, which propelled him to wide acclaim and stardom, the artiste rose through the ranks, with the help of his fellow musician Juliani, both from the ghetto to show that where indeed there is a will, there is a way.

The video is being done at Link Videos Kenya and we are looking forward to see the results of what could be another award winning production from Eko.

The Standard Group Fear For Mohammed Ali’s Safety

Following yesterday’s accusations against KTN Senior Investigative Editor Mohammed Ali over a stolen mobile handset as well as handling stolen property, sources say the Standard Group have come out resquesting security for their employee over what it terms as a possible threat to his safety.

The journalist was released on a cash bail of Kshs.50,000 after his case was heard in court yesterday, and a number of speculators think that Ali may be the victim of a setup, particularly because of the nature of his work: investigative journalism that brings to light cases of fraud and cartels thus ruining spats of crime that usually goes on unnoticed.

Mohammed Ali tied the knot just at the end of last year, 2011 and recently bagged a national award for the Media Council of Kenya’s ‘Best Journalism Award’. He is the brain behind KTN’s popular ‘Jicho Pevu’ investigative feature which he started alongside an English version which used to be spearheaded by CNN Africa Journalist of the Year award winner John Allan Namu, who later moved to rival station NTV.

Jicho Pevu has unearthed a series of crime gangs in the country as well as a range of exposes behind extra-judicial killings and drug cartels.

Want to know the power of twitter? Ask KTN journalist Cynthia Nyamai

Today morning KTN’s award winning journalist Cynthia Nyamai tweeted that people should avoid Pesa Point ATM’s after she

lost her money last week. She complained to the company, but all she got was a promise to refund her the money.

In order to show the power of twitter, immediately after Cynthia tweeted, she got her money back from Pesa Point Company. The journalist could not believe because she spent more than a week to claim her money back but to no avail.

I think people who try to discredit Twitter should learn from this scenario.

Check out gospel music go hard the Hip Hop way

Most of Kenya’s gospel music always come with that party film that we are used to, you know, the colourful videos and hype lyrics with the artistes jumping around with mad energy. That is all good but it’s also interesting and entertaining when the gospel rappers get a little bit serious and hard core on the lyrics and beats of their songs, like Juliani sometimes does it.

Gospel artiste Shem and the Wernono Family have now done just that. Everything in the song, from the lyrics, dress-code, all the way to the video just represents hard core hip hop. These guys have shown everyone that they can really rhyme without even struggling.

Dressed in official attire, they present themselves with serious lyrics just as the set up of the video is. I love the dark surrounding of the set that perfectly portrays the effects and image of the track’s hard beats.

You just have to listen to it first hand to understand what I’m talking about. Check out the video below.
