BBA: PERVERTS HAVING A FIELD DAY!

It was bad enough when BBA was treating pervs to p**n on their VIP section of the site but now, you can get your hands on vids of the contestants in the shower.

Now, i want to clarify that we are not a p**n aggregator nor am i a perv but someone has to say something about all this. And i will. Is BBA meant to bring Africans closer as a people as we enjoy watching Nigerians and Kenyans (tongue in cheek) or is it meant to bring African perverts together?
I for one didn’t really mind it when they kept the shower hour escapades to the pervs willing to pay to see it (willing buyer willing seller) but now i have to endure odd stares at the office when i log on to the site and the first vid i see is of Jannette in the shower -true story bro!
i mean come on, i know this argument holds as much water as a paper but we are Africans. We are conservative about certain issues. Issues such as nudity are a thorny issue for us. Endemol should have done a little more research!
I might be alone on my line of thought but even if i am, this is just my humble opinion.

Konshens bigs up a Kenyan VJ

When we say Kenya is full of awesome talented artistes, it ain’t no joke. You know for sure that a DJ/VJ is good when an international artiste bigs him up all the way from his country.

Yap! We have a video of Koshens throwing a shout-out to one of our very own VJ, known as VJ Ernest.

Prezzo and Goldie K.I.S.S.I.N.G

Aye so after all the hullabaloo surrounding Upville in recent days…

Prezzo has taken the time on his hands to aggressively pursue Goldie and it seems to be paying off. The pair were recently canoodling and joking about getting his kiss.
Must say you gotta love Prezzo’s direct approach to these sorta things. The Goldie clearly appreciates it and i’m sure it works for most mature lasses. None of the mind games, just straight up “I’m feeling you” type of approach.
If you don’t believe that such an approach will work, Goldie forgave Prezzo for making her feel slighted a while back. The Nigerian contestant was blushing and giggling like a school-girl. And i for one know that if you can make a lass giggle and laugh, you can make her do anything!

Was Zainab Guilty Of Provoking DKB Beyond His Limit?

So DKB slapped Zainab on Big Brother Africa yesterday, and they BOTH got disqualified from the competition immediately as a result. This has led to people having the age-old debate of whether someone who is provoked into violent action is guilty or not.

When we look at Zainab, the BBA Stargame contestant from Sierra Leone, we see a woman who has had a history of provoking her male counterparts and really testing their patience. Earlier in the game, she had got into a spat where she was allegedly slapped by Seydou. She retaliated by calling Seydou’s mother a whore.(Click here to see the whole video). Seydou kept his cool despite such a harsh jibe. However, he told Zainab that were it not for the cameras, he would have beaten her for that.

Fast forward to the events of yesterday, Zainab riled DKB up by spying on him when he was showering, an act he found rather juvenile. When he confronted her about it, Zainab reacted by daring him to slap her. “Slap me now, slap me know,” she said repeatedly. He duly obliged, and gave her a slap that knocked the glasses off of her face.

{youtube}UbVOVbinikk{/youtube}

Seeing these facts presented, it begs the question, was DKB provoked beyond an acceptable limit, and does it mean that when someone annoys and incites another to hit them, it’s OK when the person gets hit? Leave your interesting or creative responses in the comment section below:

Abbas really enjoying his time in Germany. Check it out.

Abbas Kubaff has been in Germany for quite a while giving students valuable lessons on the Kiswahili literature (read related article) and Hiphop culture in Africa.

It seems that his brief stay there has been fruitful and very enjoyable. He posted a photo on his facebook profile, giving us a small taste of what he is having out there.

Flossing a handfull of Euros with his friend, this amazing lyricist might just be feeling at home while still abroad.

Are the Creatives Fighting Back?

The creative industry, specifically advertising, is considered a fun one to work in. What better way to make a living than sit around coming up with the next big marketing campaign for leading a company, pick and direct models for photo shoots and YouTube foreign ads all day?

Maybe it’s fun on Mad Men or in other countries. Or maybe they just do a good job of censoring the boardroom drama, in-fighting, workplace politics and stuck up clients who believe copywriters and art directors are magicians who can do anything on the smallest budget.

A Kenyan Twitter account, @AgencyK, was set up recently and has been tweeting about life in the ad agencies. Unlike other parody accounts, this one is more factual in pointing out the goings-on in the creative industry and their relationship with clients and fellow workers. It casts new light on working conditions and big-picture financial decisions made by the heads.

The account runners have found a humorous twist to their follies and periodically tweet authoritatively suggesting all their issues are part of the plan. Most of the tweets are general but you can tell which group of companies the tweeter is referring to with tweets like this one.

Makmende Begins

It’s been two years since Afropop group, Just-A-Band, released the video for Ha-He, the second track off their sophomore album, 82. The video racked up YouTube views faster than any other Kenyan (and possibly African) video has. It inspired memes and had articles about it on Cracked, The Wall Street Journal and even had CNN do a feature on it. Makmende became so big that Capital FM did an advertising campaign based on the character and his exploits.

More than 450,000 views later, the band’s creation is a great example of an alternative media landscape in Africa, where artistes don’t have to rely on mainstream media channels to not only showcase their work but popularize their art. The dust may have settled but once in a while you will see references to the character.

An animator, Anto Dezignz, has come up with a whole backstory for Makmende and animated it. The five-minute animation Makmende Begins offers insight on Makmende’s roots and sets up a whole new story. It seems that this is only part of a larger film or series. Those looking for locally produced and inspired content might want to subscribe to Anto Dezignz’s YouTube channel and follow the series once it is updated.

So Women Can Slap Men All They Want, But When A Man Does It, It’s Wrong?

So today’s main focus in the entertainment industry has been the altercation between Zainab and DKB on Big Brother Africa. Zainab apparently took a peek at DKB when he was showering. The Ghanaian comedian was having none of that, and he let Zainab know how upset he was.

Zainab decided to prod DKB by challenging him to slap her on the spot, and to her shock and horror, he duly obliged. Here is a video of the fight:

{youtube}esvIoO_b8NM{/youtube}

After the fight, people have rushed to Zainab’s defense, saying that no man should ever lay his hands on a woman. My question is, don’t women slap men all the time when they are ever so slightly upset? When women do this, you never hear people saying that no woman should ever lay her hands on a man! In fact, when a man is slapped by a woman, the slap is usually followed by giggles from some, and cheers from others. Why the double standard? What happened to true equality? Or are women more equal than men?

Rapcha still doing his thing even after Ghetto Radio dismissal. Check him out.

Ever since Rapcha Tha Sayantist left Ghetto Radio, he has actually had more content for his show with fellow comedian Mwafrika.

Rapcha, one of Kenya’s natural comedians left Ghetto Radio for reasons that have not yet been disclosed. Apparently, him making un-acceptable jokes on-air was not the real or rather the main reason for his dismissal.

Lately, he has been the host of a comedy show that airs on K24, alongside Mwafrika. They usually talk about the daily Kenyan experiences and what they think about them, with a comic twist to it. The show titled The Raiyaa Show has been quite a hit with the Kenyan youths.

What does bamboo’s return portend for Kenyan emcees?

What exactly does Bamboo’s return spell for Kenya’s hiphop artists?

That really depends on the emcees approach doesn’t it? Think about it like this, Bamboo has returned to a changed landscape: both physical and metaphorical.

The older generation that remember Bamboo for his hard hitting rapid fire style of hiphop have since aged and have been replaced by the cool kidz. This generation has it’s kings.

One approach Bamboo could adopt is doing jams with the kings of the cool kids and he’s already begun to spread out his antennae and he’s been reaching out to the leaders of the cool kidz. Earlier today pictures begun doing the rounds showing Bamboo with both Octopizzo and K’Cous (Camp Mulla’s resident bad boy).

BAMBOOKCOUS

The other approach would be for Bamboo to declare open season on anyone and everyone. Beef is one of the pillars of hiphop and while this is an unlikely approach, it would actually be the more explosive approach.

I don’t know what approach Bamboo will adopt but one thing is a given though, and that is that the Kenyan entertainment scene just got real exciting!

Bamboo finally back in Kenya

The hiphop maestro flew back in the country last night.

Bamboo’s much anticipated arrival has finally come to fruition. And the hiphop artist is in the country and word has it that he has been a busy man.

BAMBOO TWEET

He seems to be networking, possibly setting the groundwork for a collabo. Here are some pics courtesy of Buddha Blaze that show Bamboo meeting the leaders of the cool kidz.

LOL! Remember this ridiculous trio?

If I had a penny for every time these guys cracked everyone’s ribs…! These guys by history are the funniest comedians that Kenya has ever seen. Well, at that time to be exact.

I randomly came across this dated photo of the ridiculous trio, Nyambane, Tony and KJ. I wonder what their kids think when they see their dads in these attires and characters.

This is by far Ghafla’s photo of the day.

Shaffie Goes Into Comedy

Shaffie Weru is well known as a radio presenter who is not afraid of pulling of wild antics in public. As reported on Ghafla! he was even once guilty of being dragged off from a Nakuru rugby stadium, after causing a drunk and disorderly ruckus.

Well, besides all that, Shaffie is now trying his hand at being a comedian. He has turned his social media pages into pure jokes centres where he posts funny statuses, videos and pictures. This might seem to many like he is biting off more than he can chew, but guess what? Some of the gags he posts are actually pretty funny! Here are the 3 best ones:

1. – A pastor was caught stealing from the church safe by a church member..He shouted”blessed r the ones who sees and not talk”church member replied in low voice ..”for they shall rceive their shares”.

Check out how the Kenya Olympic Anthem auditions kicked off

The auditions for the Coca Cola Kenya Olympic Anthem that were held at the KICC on the 3Rd of June saw many hyped up youth show up for a chance to get featured in a collaboration with Kenya’s hit maker, Madtraxx.

The auditions took place concurrently in Mombasa, Kisumu and Nairobi. Mombasa had DJ Delf and producer Susumila as the judges at Darajani Hotel, Kisumu received DJ Edog and Thomas Milongo of Chagua Records at Sunset Hotel while Nairobi had the legendary DJ Pinye and Madtraxx at the KICC.

“There are some people who are doing a really great job during the auditions but will not qualify,” said DJ Pinye. “This is not because they’re not talented, they are just not the right fit for the project and what we are looking for.”

Madtraxx and DJ Pinye will later choose four from the selected few from each city, after which the two winners will be voted for by the public.

“So far it been very interesting, there are definitely a lot of young people out there with talent and it’s exciting to see. If we can find one person who is a really good vocalist, and one person who can do a good rap, that would give us everything that we need to make this a great Olympic Anthem,” said Madtraxx who was quite impressed with the outcome.

“I just want to thank Coca-Cola for making all this possible,” said DJ Pinye. “I just want to thank Coca-Cola for making all this possible,” said DJ Pinye. “I had always wanted to do something like this, but never got the chance till now.”

In partnership with the world’s largest beverage company, Coca-Cola, which serves their consumers worldwide at a rate of 1.7 billion servings a day, this project promises to be one of the biggest and most successful music project that Kenya has ever seen.

If you were not part of the energy filled auditions, check out how it was.

The Artist Premiere’s at Alliance Francaise

2011 Academy Award Best Picture winner, The Artist, held its Kenyan premiere in a packed Mary Louise Leakey Auditorium at the Alliance Francaise on 4th June. The Michel Hazanicius-directed romantic silent film about Hollywood transition has a 98% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and topped most Top 10 film charts of 2011. Despite receiving serious competition from Tree Of Life, The Descendants and Hugo in the early parts of the 2011 awards season, it went on to win five Oscars at the Academy Awards. The film also made TIME’s list for Top 10 best films of the decade.

Jean “French George Clooney” Dujardin plays a charming silent-era Hollywood star, George Valentin, who at the peak of his career refuses to change in an artistic landscape that is. It is 1929 and filmmakers have figured out how to include sound in film. Valentin dismisses the technology, which costs him his career. As his reputation declines, a young star (Berenice Bejo) he helped make rises to stardom. For his performance, he won a Golden Globe, Oscar and best actor at Cannes Pris d’interpretation masculine among others.

Other than picture and actor, the film won three other Oscars for the direction, Ludovic Bource’s score and Mark Bridges’ costume design. It was nominated for five more: Hazanivicius’ original screenplay, Berenice Bejo’s acting, Guillaume Schiffman’s camerawork, Anne-Sophie Bion’s cutting and Robert Gould and Laurence Bennett’s art direction. It also won seven BAFTAs, six Cesars (the French Oscars), four Independent Spirit Awards, a slot in The National Board of Reviews 10 notable films among numerous wins and countless nominations.

In a year that was filled with films about filmmaking history, The Artist stood out and probably won because it reminded an old-fashioned academy about a golden age passed them by. Despite the film being shot almost entirely in California, it is regarded as a French film because of the backing, director and lead characters.

Four radio stations face possible close-down

Four Coastal radio stations are currently being investigated by the Media Council of Kenya (MCK) for propagating hate speech and if found guilty, Communication Commission of Kenya (CCK) will close them down and the journalists will face prosecution.

The radio stations, all owned by government officials are as follows; Radio Kaya, owned by Transport Minister Chirau Ali Mwakwere, Radio Rahma, owned by Nassir Abdulsmaad (son of the late Shariff Nassir), Pipili FM which is Balala’s new product and Radio Salaam which is owned by Defence Minister Yusuf Haji.

“We must remind our journalists and media houses that they cannot be duped into promoting or giving voice to divisive politics that can easily lead the country into anarchy,” said Chairman Levy Obonyo.

MCK claims to have audio evidence of this matter and that the investigations are still underway.

This should serve as a wake-up call to all journalists.

Documentary on Inspirational Kenyan Premieres in the US

A documentary feature film based on a true Kenyan story premiered in the USA over this past weekend.
The film, Well of Dreams: The Journey of Anne Okello, is a not-for-profit feature by Well of Dreams Inc and has been formed to tell other women’s stories and to partner with other organizations to do related work in Africa and other parts of the world.

The story of Anne Okello is an interesting one (as adapted from Well of Dreams):
She graduated from West Chester University in May of 2010 with a Masters Degree in non profit administration. If you were to meet her you would see a warm smile and sense a kind heart. But behind those eyes there is a story of a young girl who received “two strokes” virtually every day for being late to school in her small village of Angiro, Kenya and suffered many other injustices. For Anne life was “very, very hard.” For one thing she had the job of walking 8 miles most mornings to retrieve a bucket of river water for the family to use for the day. Because of the scarcity of water she often had to stand in line once she got there and that would make her late to school which earned her an almost daily beating.

At one point in her youth, Anne was an outcast because she refused to get married at age 14 as was expected of her. She said she observed girls her age getting married and having many children. The husbands had many wives and AIDS was prevalent which often lead to an early death. She did not want that and she believed that her only way out was to focus on her education. Anne did that and she went on to graduate from the University of Nairobi and more recently earned a Masters Degree from West Chester University.

After graduating from West Chester Anne began to share her desire to return to her village and have a fresh water well installed. Over a period of six months and with the help and support of many wonderful people and new friends, Anne was able to raise the $35,000 needed and on Christmas Eve of 2010 a solar powered well was installed in the village of Angiro, Kenya.

In the film you will also find out more about the community projects which Anne remarkably started on her own and receives regular support from well-wishers and NGOs.

Cindy Speaker, president of Speaker Films, met Anne when she was working on raising money for the well and the two ladies became fast friends. In early 2011 Anne’s journey took another major turn and it was at that time that Cindy asked Anne if her team could do a documentary of her life story.

BBA: Prezzo, Alex and Malonza Kenya’s best bet thus far!

This time round, Kenya has got exciting representatives down South in BBA!

For a long time Kenyans have had to contend with being represented by individuals who have done a horrible job of selling Kenya to the rest of Africa, ultimately getting eliminated after the first two rounds. Jeremy Ndirangu (BBA 4) was the best bet Kenya had and he got real far but he became the sixteenth housemate to be evicted from the House on Day 56.

PREZZO
But this time round, we have not one, not two but three contenders for the throne and they are doing a stellar job of navigating the intrigues associated with the game. Also, never before have Kenya’s contesters brought Kenyan viewers together. Granted, Prezzo didn’t inspire alot of confidence when he was announced but now? Come on, for whatever reasons he may have, even Jaguar is in his camp! And he is no small fish, Jaguar is one of the biggest names in Kenyan entertainment.

MALONZA MAKING KISSY-FACE

MALONZA MAKING KISSY-FACE1
And Alex and Malonza have taken to chasing the lasses in Downville. Malonza especially.

MALONZA AND ALEX

That gives guys something top talk about. And Prezzo is playing chess and the two brothers are playing the lasses and that is a reason to keep them in the house. No? You think not? Controversy sells!
This is my humble opinion.

BINYAVANGA WAINAINA’S BOOK LAUNCH

On the evening of 1st June, renown Kenyan writer, Binyavanga Wainaina, launched his book, One Day I will Write About This Place at the Kenya Railway Museum, a unique and interesting venue for an event. It was followed by the reading of an excerpt from the book by the author himself. The event ended with a book signing and a ‘70s-themed DJ set by Just-A-Band, playing music from Tabu Ley, Maroon Commandoes and Boney M.

BBA: Upvillers Relieved with Biggie’s Decision to Cancel Evictions for the Week

Upville was distressed yesterday when the housemates just overcame the shock exits of SIerra Leone’s Zainab and Ghana’s DKB following the altercation that left not just Zainab’s cheek but also BBA fans stunned.

Incase you missed out on the event that bundled Sierra Leone out of contention for the Kshs. 25 million cash prize, and left Ghana with only one beacon of hope, Keitta, who on Sunday was upgraded to Upville, in the nick of time actually, CLICK HERE.

As the Upvillers prepared for what would have been a mud-slinging nomination process, Big Brother ackowledged the noble efforts the Stargamers had displayed through the DKB-Zainab saga and effectively nullified all nominations and evictions for the week.

Lady May seemed to be happiest with this resolution, as she could not contain her excitement, even prancing around the house earlier this morning in her pink heels.

Prezzo confesses about not being married

Remember week one in the Big Brother Upville House when Prezzo fought with South Africa’s Barbs, talking about how he has a perfect family and all, and how Barbs has nothing close to that? Well, Prezzo finally came clean about ‘the perfect family’.

During his Diary session last week, Prezzo told Big Brother about his divorce with his now ex-wife. That’s not the only thing that Prezzo came clean about during the diary session. Prezzo admitted having feelings about Goldie despite their break-up.

It is evident how much Goldie misses Prezzo but he is not showing the same anytime soon. He has been ignoring Goldie since the argument to the point that Goldie can take it no more. “He goes out of his way to ignore me and it feels like I’m not worth much,” Goldie said.

PREZZO-AND-GOLDIE

I think all this started when Goldie asked Prezzo if she could ration his cigarettes. Taking control of a man’s cigarettes… really?

Their fellow housemates however seem to have different opinions on their relationships. “Prezzo is using Goldie for his own entertainment. They are having a fake relationship,” said Maneta.

I guess we’ll just have to wait and see how this goes.

CELEBS REACT TO DKB SLAPPING ZAINAB!

So, by now we all know about the infamous incident of DKB (Ghana) slapping Zainab (Sierra Leone).

DKB SLAPPETY SLAP SLAP

But have you heard what Kenyan celebrities feel about the whole affair?
Shappaman of Camp Mulla is of the view that the whole incident is unacceptable. Especially from someone who is a celebrity and should know better. “It’s regrettable that it happened in this day and age!”

SHAPAMAN
Jimmy Gait strongly condemned DKB’s actions and said that irrespective of how badly Zainab had provoked him, he should have known better. Drawing from his reputation of being a gentleman has even generously offered to teach the Ghanaian how to be a gentleman the Kenyan way!

JIMMY GAIT CLOSE-UP
The kicker however was the fact that Anto Neosoul and rabbit who were editing there video “Prodigal Son”. Anto asserts that a man should never hit a woman period! He let on that he felt like DKB didn’t understand the concept of the game or he would have seen that Zainab was playing it.
“He let down Ghana, not even Africa because he doesn’t represent the rest of Africa!”
At this juncture, Rabbit (the amazing lyricist that gave us “Tembea”) gave a different view that threw a spanner in the works: “What if it’s all just for ratings?”
Chew on that food for thought before i dish out some even more provocative line of thought.
According to rabbit, this was an unfortunate  reaction but it’s all just for ratings so we should move on. At this point Anto hit him in jest and the two went into it with each giving a compel argument to support their school of thought. Anto felt that it was a savage act that is indefensible and Rabbit -and i quote- “Shuttup!”. Rabbit countered by saying that everyone watching saw the incident from a mile away yet Biggie did nothing. Why was that?
All in all, i was glad to note that Kenyan celebs espouse veiws of gender equality and respect for the fairer sex in general. Views that you only get from Ghafla!

Hellon: My seven day old child wants to be a musician!

Controversial presidential hopeful and jazz maestro, Joseph Hellon is already positive that his newly born son wants to be a musician and he will stop at nothing to make that dream come true.

After dropping the political acts and concentrating on his music shows which have been numerous lately, Hellon now takes time on the weekends to hang out with his family. It actually makes sense that music is the most likely path for his son to take since he is actually born into a family of musicians.

“I do not see why he will not become one considering he is born into a family of musicians. I will make sure that he gets all the mentoring that he deserves,” Hellon told sources.

Smitta Smitten Loses His Mother-In-Law

Standard Group media personality Smitta Smitten (real name Tony Mochama)lost his Mother-in-law, Nita Lucas over the weekend.

According to sources, Nita had been battling with her illness over a long period of time and passed on in a local hospital while Smitta and his wife Sharanova were attending to her.

Smitta is set to launch his novel, Princess Adhis, this coming Thursday evening at the Professional Center in downtown Nairobi. The title was initially scheduled for release at last year’s Hay Festival but undisclosed circumstances led to the release being delayed. He promised his fans that the book would be out before this year’s edition of the Hay Festival.

“It’s sad, I have dedicated my novel to her, she was so dear to us. I have already confirmed that Shaffie Weru and singer Wahu among other celebrities will be attending the launch,” Smitta said.

You would think that this crowd with very different traditions would be a little hard to please when it comes to the choice of music, but Lizz is not worried at all as she told sources that she has a fusion of neutral music line up.

Lizz has been reluctant with the honeymoon location (as they all do). We wish them a happy and prosperous life together.

Big Brother Africa You Tube Account Shut Down

It’s drama, deceit, backstabbing and the unusual that you wanted to see as Big Brother Africa: Stargame began exactly one month ago, and it’s exactly that that you’re getting now.

Millions across the continent have been watching Africa’s BIGGEST reality show unfold before their very eyes and thankfully ALL of Kenya’s representatives, Prezzo, Alex and Malonza are still in the house.

With the high demand for BBA video footage, BBA decided to open up a You Tube account where video feeds from the house could be shared with ardent fans on a regular and consistent basis, but it seems ‘misuse’ and actions bordering on ‘infringement of copyright’ have led the franchise to shut down its official Youtube account which was opened when the season began on the 5th of May 2012.

All videos of BBA Stargame may still however be found on the Big Brother blog of South African Pay TV channel DSTV as well as from other select channels on You Tube. This could also be a move to curb piracy of the footage and prevent illegal downloads and commercial ventures outside of the official channels of Endemol Productions, the brainchild behind the Big Brother Africa reality show.
