Juliani Finally Admits That He Is Dating Brenda Wairimu

Juliani and Brenda Wairimu have been playing it coy with their relationship status for a while, but today he finally came out LIVE on One FM radio.

Tina Kaggia was having a one-on-one with Juliani on her One Active show, when she brought up the question of the relationship rumours with Brenda Wairimu. She remarked about how many people had been speculating, and Juliani had also been hinting a bit towards a union, but their had been no official confirmation.

Juliani came out, saying, “Yes, it’s true. We have been going out for 7 months now. I like her because she is a really awesome person and down to earth.”

So there you have it peeps. Apparently Tina was flooded with calls afterwards from disgruntled female fans. For all the female fisis who were eyeing Julius Owino, I have one word for you:

“POLE!”

A Kenyan Comedy Movie to Watch Out For

Kwa Maiko is a new Kenyan film that will premiere at the Coast Film Festival in Mombasa, and maybe spread out to other towns in Kenya soon.

The film is a comedy about an brew seller, Maiko, who is looking to live a ‘dot com’ life. Maiko is collaborating with a corrupt police officer, Kiplagat. Problem is, Kiplagar’s junior who is still fresh in the force is pursuing Maiko. Another storyline in the film follows four drunkards, who before their drinking spree were popular in their individual jobs.

The Quayside Media film is directed by Hilary Namanje and written by Ben Mujibi. The film stars Anderson Mutisya, Sharon Nanjosi, Dan Kinyanjui, Joseph Mwangi and Michel Otieno among others.

Photo Gallery: Eko Dydda, Astar & Kriss Ehh Baba Rock the Tuvuke Peace Tour

The Tuvuke Peace Tour made a stop at the Migori Teachers Training College. The event featured performances from Eko Dydda, Astar Kriss Ehh Baba and mixing from DJ Touch.

“The Tuvuke- Initiative for Peaceful and Fair Electoral process in Kenya is a systematic effort aimed at developing collaborative pre-emptive actions and activities to forestall any pre-planned or spontaneous violence before, during and after the elections and to equip Kenyans with knowledge and skills so that individually and collectively they can enhance peace and justice.”

Years later, Didge and Collo finally release their ‘Kipusa’ video

The song ‘kipusa’ which was a collaborative effort between Didge and Collo was a serious hit. I mean, ladies went and are still going crazy over this song. Romantic, slick and just purely stylish this song was even without a video.

Now, the video is out and the song is about to be re-born. About to be a hit once again, especially since it is a really good video. Simple and fresh. Something out of a Dream (the artiste) video.

I hope this marks the final return of Didge as an artiste and not just the completion of a pending project.

Check out the new video below.

Rapper Refuses to Conform & Makes a Video About It

GBO, also known as Goldenboy Odongo has finally released a video for his latest single DTA (Death To All). You can check out his Yuck freestyle here.

The video takes you through GBO’s day-to-day grind and depicts a scenario a number of artists find themselves in today. GBO is faced with the decision of changing his style and persona and conforming to a more marketable image designed by record executives.

He is pressured into signing a lucrative contract at the expense of his creative freedom. Check out the video below and see how GBO handles the situation.

Dreams of ‘shooting’ your boss: Here’s how I did

Let me let you in on a little secret fact: being the only female writer in an office is HARD.

I must admit, I love working with the team at Ghafla! but it does get a little testosterone-y up in this office sometimes. I am privy to some conversations that I really think I should NEVER hear (somewhere there is a man crying out NOOOOO you broke the bro-code and told a female our secrets!!! Yes, they break the bro-code EVERY DAY). I am perpetually trolled by colleagues. I am automatically expected to write articles about “Top sexiest actors” or “Sexiest male singers” or “Guys you meet in a club”…

So enough was enough. I talked to the everyone at Ghafla! and tried to convince them to come for a weekend out. I really was tired of all the crazy talk in the office and wanted to give these men a piece of my mind get to know these guys for real. In the THREE YEARS of Ghafla being in existence, these men have never had a team-building weekend, never had a weekend together, never done anything together as a team. *sigh* MEN.

Sneaky me… I had to figure out a way to take my frustrations out on these fools co-workers of mine, but let it still be a “fun” day out. Cue in my list of other ways to spend your weekend. And there it was: #20. Rongai. Rolf’s Place. Paintballing. *evil smile* Shoot my co-workers???? COUNT ME IN! It took a LOT of convincing, a lot of cancelling, but I finally got a sizeable number of them to agree to come. Even got Imbuhila from the legal team to come, and Lewis from the sales team (although he cancelled last minute).

So couple Saturdays ago, we took a little road trip to Rolf’s. Had lunch, chilled, spent the whole afternoon there… Got back to Nairobi, -got derailed drinking at Junction thanks to Chimwani and Kone- and headed for two hours of floodlit paintballing. Yes. You read right. Me, the cover of darkness, ammunition and some grudges. Cue the revenge…. So I thought. Right up till I realised I didn’t have my contact lenses on (aim fail). We split into two teams, capture the flag was ON. Then out of nowhere competition got so fierce that surrendering was no longer an option and we started shooting each other at pointblank range (BAD IDEA, WOULD NOT SUGGEST TO ANYONE).

Well, with all the bruises I have to show for it (and yes, I did gather quite a few of them -clearly there was no pity for girls, it was all out war-) I think I FINALLY convinced some members of the team that all of us hanging out together once in a while is not such a bad idea. (Sidenote: I may just have graduated from being flabbergasted by the men that I work with to being mildly -note MILDLY- fond of them.) And to boot, I think I have officially started the official annual Ghafla! hang-out day!

If you all are wondering what your team of writers here at Ghafla! look like, and how we are from behind our laptops, notebooks and desktops…. Here’s a couple pics we took from our day out.

And check out the list of 40 better ways to spend your weekend, see if you can convince a couple of your friends to get together and do any of them. It’ll be worth the hassle. I think the Ghafla! team agrees.

More shots taken at Octopizzo

What seemed to be a by-the-way beef is slowly growing into a real beef. War of words. Rapper Mwakenya is not holding back at all on what he calls, “calling things as they are” and according to him, Octopizzo just doesn’t make the cut (music wise).

Through sources, Mwakenya made it clear that his rivalry is not about to end any time soon as long as Octo keeps at what he is currently doing. Personally, I don’t quite get it, but here’s what Mwakenya had to say to Octopizzo through an interview with Zuqka,

“He is a good rapper, but probably not the best in Kenya, so awache kujidai na hizo lines ana repeat kila place ni kama ni national anthem (he should stop boasting with those lyrics he regurgitates as if they were the national anthem).”

A Festival for the Beer Lovers

There will be a couple of Oktoberfest events this year. One of the them will take place on the 5th and 6th of October at Karura Forest between 5:00 p.m. and 2:00 a.m.

Oktoberfest will celebrate the diverse Kenyan and German cultures. Partygoers will

get to enjoy music from The Oompah Band and Calabash Band. Tickets to the event will go for Kshs. 1,200.

The event is co-sponsored by Galito’s and South African Airways.

Avril is going giggly over Jalan’go

You have probably heard about the rumours going around about Avril and Jalang’o dating and all. Well, we heard them too and had to confirm it for ourselves.

Earlier on, in an interview with 1FM, Avril said that she is currently single and not seeing anyone at the moment. She denied relations with Jalang’o. Now, the story going round is that the two are an item and this got us all confused. But no more. Factual Ghafla is back with the real stuff.

We managed to get Avril to spill the beans on this and though she tried her best to hide what’s going on, I think it’s pretty clear to us all. This is what she had to say when we contacted her on this matter,

“Me and Jalang’o have grown really close lately over the past few months. We have spent an immense amount of time together and all I can say is that he is a really charming, caring and loving man and…(giggling) let’s just wait and see where it goes.”

Hmmm… now for Jalang’o side of the story… KEEP IT GHAFLA!

Mwakenya: I absolutely loath Ghipuka style of music

Octopizzo’s nemesis, Mwakenya is now making headlines for more than his music. First taking shots at Octopizzo when he was still on the rise, to giving out honest opinions about other genres of music.

Incase you don’t know by now, Mwakenya has just launched his own line of T-Shirts dubbed M#254 that are currently being donned by youths all over Nairobi. Aside from this side businesses, Mwakenya has been on the grind musically ever since he shot his best video yet, ‘Take Over’.

In a recent interview with sources, Mwakenya was asked about the Kenyan genre of music that he hates the most and without hesitation, he called out ‘Ghipuka’. Just incase you are not familiar with what Ghipuka is, it is the style of music and flow that comes from artistes from the Pacho Entertainment Studios, the likes of Kenrazy, Sosuun, Rap Damu, just to mention a few.

Another kick to the balls. Same kick, different balls.

Kenyan Going to World DJ Championships

Kenya is going to the DMC World DJ Championships. The country will be represented by DJ Tohnny O’k. The finals will take place on the 27th and 28th of September at HMV Forum in London.

The disc jockey beat out DJ Faddablack, DJ Supreme and DJ Crossfade in the Kenya finals that were held on the 27th of August last year. Kenya will only have one representative. Kenya and South Africa are the only African countries partipating.

Other countries in the competition are Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, China, Czech/Slovak, Denmark, France, Germany, Indonesia, Italy, Puerto Rico, Philipines, Portugal, Singapore, Switzerland, Thailand, UK and USA.

HORRIFYING: Fred Omondi flees neighborhood after getting shot at

Comedian Fred Omondi, brother to fellow comedian Erick Omondi had a close shave with death a few days back. It might be through Chuck Norris movies that he is alive today, after narrowly escaping trigger happy thugs.

Fred Omondi was on his way back home (Woodley Estate) from a late night show when he became part of a horror movie. It is incidents like these that convince you actors are overrated. Six gun wielding thugs stood in-front of his car commanding him to step out. At this moment, Fred thought of all the stories he had heard about people getting hijacked on that same road. The thought of his car disappearing drove him to step on the accelerator and disappear with his own car. Did he hit the thugs as he was driving away at full speed? Well, they kept on shooting at the car as he sped away, so, I don’t think so. I would have done the same thing, out of fear of getting raped, let alone carjacking. But anyway, whatever reason it takes to save your own life.

According to sources, Fred Omondi claims that only two bullets hit his car but he was not hurt. The next day, Fred moved from that neighbourhood and all his friends supported this, especially after he was told by the security guards that some dudes were asking for him.

That’s some scary incident right there but I’m pretty sure Fred will turn this into a really hilarious story for one of his shows (one of the reasons why I love comedians).

WOAH! Octopizzo’s sunglasses cost him Sh. 18, 000

Octopizzo never ceases to amaze me. Everything he does is just so celebrity like. We have already established the fact that this guy knows his way around money a little bit too much, and now as we are beginning to discover, he is not afraid to be a little bit extravagant too.

You know those Louis Vuitton sunglasses that he is so fond of? Bet you have been wondering why it is so hard for him to put them down, huh? Well, if you buy shades like those for Sh. 18, 000, the attachment between you two will be unmatched. Not even your girlfriend can compete with that much love and affection.

With all the hard work Octopizzo has been doing, he really does deserve to spoil himself a little. maybe even more.

Safaricom 7s: Ghafla! ALL ACCESS

Safaricom Sevens is upon us again!!! And Ghafla! has an all access pass to the entire event. From the set up before the event, to the kick-off today, to the corporate area, to “Russia”, to the players themselves… Ghafla! is on the ground. But as we gather info from the field, we asked some of our rugby friends to let you all know what it is about Safari(com) Sevens. What’s all the hype. What’s all the noise.

So for this week we will be having a couple guest articles from Ghafla!’s friends in the rugby fraternity, in KRFUEA and the like.

*Check out our all access pre-game photo gallery here

To set us off, Paul Okong’o -from Kisumu Rugby Union- brings to you what Safari(com) Sevens means to all of us Kenyans.

(This is a guest article beginning here:)

What is the final score? No one knows. Each team is given a nil or nought score before each game. Some games end up in a shellacking or drubbing. If any team finishes with a nil score, some would say they do not deserve it -they sure did not work that hard to leave with a nil-.

Ghafla! entertainment group -originally Kenyan.lyrics.com- three years old. The Safaricom Sevens -initially Coca-Cola, then Tusker- 16 years old. Ghafla! and Rugby both congregate citizens of the world. They both evoke strong memories in the entertainment, social, and cultural spheres, albeit in different categories but actually quite similar.

This is the 16th edition of the Safari Sevens -Africa’s premier 7’s event. Since that opening stanza in July 1996, the event has grown from strength to strength. Last year the turnout was 23,000+. A SS record. Also, for the first time, the event was held at Nyayo Stadium. Away from the traditional Kenya Rugby Union Grounds.

The finest rugby players, coaches and adminstrators from all over the world have graced this great event…

  1. Waisale Serevi -the Fijian (dual wold cup winner 1997, 2005) widely acknowledged as the greatest 7’s player.
  2. Gordon Tiejens- the All Black-the most successful coach ever. Gordon has won all the Commonwealth games unbeaten -Kuala Lumpur-1998, Manchester 2001, Melbourne-2006 and Delhi-2010.
  3. Collin Charvis of Wales and the British Lions.
  4. The Springbok ‘Prince of Wing’s”-Bryan Habana.
  5. The ‘King of Biarittz’ -Serge Blanco- the Rolls Royce of Fullbacks.

Add to that a constellation of names, Collins Injera, Humphrey Kayange, Apolosi Satala, Villiane Satala, Richard Hill, Chester Willaims, Uli Schmidt, Naas Botha, Gavin Hastings and so many others and you truly have a world in union.

The Carnival atmosphere in Nairobi at the Sevens is truly amazing. At the inaugural event in 1996, Public School Wanderers played Zimbabwe in the final to the endless chants of ‘Lets Go Africa’. The support for the home team Kenya is always phenomenal. SS has truly grown. The challenge is now to make the event a true family gathering.

The School’s category, the veterans category to reminisce the good old days… It is all encompassing. And which self respecting rugby thespian finishes a conversation without mentioning the fairer sex? The women’s competition is equally riveting (The presence of Aberdeen Shikoyi will be greatly missed -April 2012, RIP.)

The year 2000 marked a special two in one (stood as both the usual SS and the Rugby World Cup qualifier). Shujaa came out the winner. Paul ‘Pablo’ Murunga scored a try against Namibia to take Kenya into her first World Cup. This stands to date as one of Kenya’s finest hours at SS.

The ultimate goal of the SS is to get admission into the the IRB series while at the same time ensuring that our fans have a great experience. That is why there was un upgrade to Nyayo Stadium -to place us on the same level as worlwide IRB series venues. The event however does not yet offer prize money.

May both these groups (Ghafla! and SS) grow in strength and stature to match some of the oldest (in rugby competition it is the Calcutta Cup -played between England and Scotland since 1871). Root for your team. Root for your own. I will be rooting for Kenya this weekend. I hope so will you.

Kind Regards,

Paul Okong’o.

HOLY CRAP: Camp Mulla’s Album Only Costs 250bob!

Camp Mulla’s Funky town album launches tomorrow, Saturday 22nd September.

It will be available in all Nakumatt and Uchumi outlets in Kenya, and for those in the diaspora, you can catch it on iTunes. Best thing of all, it will retail for the low, LOW price of 250 Kenya shillings! Considering the ultra-premium production quality that Camp Mulla put into their production, this is one of the biggest all-time bargains in terms of Kenyan music albums. Remember, this is a group who’s music has been recognized with nominations for the biggest international awards: the BET Awards, MTV Europe Music Awards, Music Of Black Origin Awards and Channel O Music Video Awards, all in one year.

Will Kenyans buy it? Remains to be seen, but from what we’re seeing on social media, guys think it’s a great offer. Seems like many people have been waiting, have been anxious for a price point like this. Some copies will be distributed at tomorrow’s Safaricom Sevens event. It is a 15 track album featuring several musical heavyweights both locally and internationally.

For us, we’d urge our readers to come out and buy the album as well, in support of our local entertainment industry.

(PS: The album art is in the picture for this article. Click the image to enlarge it.)

“I Am Not in Kayole” – Esther Arunga Proves Hellon Wrong Using Video Evidence

The Timberlakes had been silent for a while before last week. They are now back with a range of accusations and abuse for their former spiritual leader, Joseph Hellon.

Besides that, there have been doubts about the couple’s actual whereabouts. It was proven that earlier this year they were in Dubai (read about here). Press releases sent by them has placed them in various places including Australia and the U.S., where they have been apparently working and raising funds for their political ambitions. Joseph Hellon claimed they still live in Kayole.

Now, Esther Arunga has uploaded a video to prove that she does not live in Kayole, Eastlands or anywhere in Africa for that matter. She starts off by speaking to her son and gets right into it. This is what she says:

It’s the 20th of September, 2012. And this is Esther Timberlake’s video library. At the moment, we are on the banks of the Brisbane River here in Queensland. It’s a beautiful day, 29 degrees, sweltering hot spring weather. Behind me is the Brisbane wheel and the ABC offices. And right behind the Brisbane wheel is the Griffith University. You can see here a profile of the City of Brisbane, very, very beautiful.”

And then she gets funny…and fierce:

And I would love for Kayole to look like this but we are not quite there yet, are we? So, that short saxophonist pervert should leave my family alone and focus on his own family and move on with life. That’s all I ask.”

And then even more clarifications:

As you can see, we’re not starving in Kayole neither are we starving in Dubai. You can see a sign here: Queensland Museum, Queensland Art Gallery, Queensland State Library, Royal Brisbane International College, The Brisbane Convention & Exhibition Center. So, this is where we’re at today, just taking a break from all the hard work. Spending some time in Sunnyside Queensland.”

And then the shot is interrupted some locals.

It’s all right. Some Kayole residents there.”

You can check out the evidence below.

And in the second video, recorded four days earlier

We’re still in Australia at the moment and contrary to a nasty rumor being circulated by a nasty individual who is hellbent on ruining more lives than he already has, my family and I are not in Kayole, not even in the country. And that’s why there’s a delayed response–always–to his nasty mutterings. I wouldn’t have made this video if he hadn’t continuously attacked my husband…and I’ve had enough of that.”

If you are wondering why she would record a whole evidence video without showing her face even once, then check this one out. She pans round to herself.

Check out Camp Mulla’s album artwork

Camp Mulla are about to launch what could be the biggest album of the year from Kenya. Yes, I said it. Hate them or love them, these guys are really good at what they do.

Their debut album, ‘Funky Town’ will be officially released this Saturday (22nd September 2012) after their performance at the Safaricom 7s at the Nyayo National Stadium and they are almost as excited as the fans, maybe even more.

The artwork of the album is already driving me crazy over it. Check out what is to be Funky Town (click image to enlarge).

Goldie’s Prezzo visit: Was it a romantic gesture, or just a stop-over?

So, during the weekend, Nigerian superstar Goldie flew down to Kenya to see Prezzo. We all know what that is about, but are we really sure about it. It helps to imagine and think of the two love birds actually going for it, but are we blowing things out of proportion?

The two were spotted cuddling and whispering into each other’s ears and stuff at the Channel O meet and greet that went down at The Junction this weekend.

After all that, Goldie left the country only to stop over Uganda to see Kyle, who, if you remember correct, was a very good friend of Goldie’s up until he betrayed her.

This just makes me wonder, was this just a regular visit to Prezzo seeing that she is visiting her fellow ex-housemates? Are there really feelings involved?

Shamir drops another lovers’ rock tune

He is the artiste who astonished many after the release of his first hit song, ‘On Fire’. Can you believe that this song was even being requested in Jamaica and other countries? It was that big. No imitations of the Jamaican accent. Just pure original reggae music from a Kenyan.

That might be what has won him so many fans and till date, he still keeps it real like that. His latest song, ‘So high on your love’ has also been receiving some airplay and is doing fairly well in the country considering how Kenyan reggae music is received here.

The song is romantic, as are all his songs. It is really surprising encouraging to hear an artiste like this, straight from the slums of Kibera, singing about love and nothing related to the troubles he faces and the hard life he has to push on through everyday.

Have a listen to the track below.

VIDEO: Man strips naked and cries in a pub

On Tuesday, a man in an Eldoret Pub pulled one of the oldest stunts that is common among women who have been through the most cruel of treatments. I still don’t understand what drove him to this level.

Apparently, this guy walked into a pub with more than Sh. 10, 000 in his pockets and decided to have some fun. So the drinks started coming in and at some point, he felt he had had enough and decided to get up and leave.

As he frisked his pocket to make sure he is still balling, he was astonished to find nothing. So, what does he do to ensure that his mulla gets back to him? He strips naked! Down to his birthday suit, demanding the pub waiters to return the money they stole from him.

Confident infront of the camera, the man addresses the nation through the media. Check out the video below.

Would ten thousand shillings drive you this crazy?

He is also famed for being the first African artiste to debut a music video on 106 and Park on BET at the beginning of the year. “Valu Valu” Coming To Nairobi

The top entertainer in East Africa Dr. Jose Chameleon is set to perform in Kenya next week on Friday. Chameleon will be on stage at the Deep West Resort in Nairobi West. This tour is in a bid to promote his club-banger song, “Valu valu” which is already doing so well in East Africa.

Even though Chameleone is a frequent visitor to Kenya, he has only performed once back then when he featured Dancehall sensation Redsan in his song “Bageya”. Chameleone’s fans in Kenya are buoyant that the Ugandan star will stage a mega party as it is synonymous with him.

“Valu valu” (wasi wasi) is a massive hit that has caught the region by storm since its release. The Bayuda star is the only music doctor this region has produced so far and that could explain why he is top of his game.

Mark your calendars people, this is a must attend event. Check out “Valu valu” below;
