Photo Gallery: Nameless and Jackiwa (Matasia Star) at the ‘Usiku wa Mkenya’ concert in Germany

According to some of the revellers that had the opportunity to attend the ‘Usiku wa Mkenya’concert that took place in Stuttgart, Germany, the concert was an epic success. Every Kenyan and  non-Kenyan individual that attended the concert had a great time, especially since Kenyan music legend, Nameless was the main artiste of the night.

Most of them remember Nameless’ old songs which are by the way all time favorites. Jammin’ to the tracks, they were also entertained by the new and viral artiste, Jackiwa and her very much interesting songs.

Jackiwa even shared the stage with Nameless. Check out how the event was in photos courtesy of Peter Schwabe.

Kenzo Hits Out At Loose Chics

If you are a Kenzo fan, you must have noticed that he has been very quiet since he released his “Mama Milka” hit. Well, he is back with a new track.

Dubbed “Matatu”, the song’s title is a metaphor for a loose chic. Kenzo is trying to tell the few “rotten” ladies in the society that money is not everything and that at the end of it all, love conquers all. Mhhh, sounds like Dr. Love? Anyhow, he features K-Mess, a an upcoming artist from the Coast and a former member of a  group called “Top Shottas.”

Kenzo also revealed that the video for the song should be out in less than a months time. Meanwhile, enjoy “Matatu” below;

Actors Talk About the Scene That Took the Longest to Shoot on Nairobi Half Life

One interesting thing that came out of talking to Joseph K. Wairimu and Olwenya Maina was that there was a scene that took longer to shoot than the entire length of the finished film because a character kept messing up the lines on the first day of shooting as a gang.

Below is a transcript of their responses.

Ghafla!: “Which scene did you do the most number of times?”

Olwenya Maina: “Do not lie. We will never forgive you for that.”

Joseph K. Wairimu: “I will not lie. There was this scene that we were the whole gang and we were going to sell some car parts to John Waya. And there was that monologue I was supposed to bring in a certain way…”

OM: “Like Spartacus.”

JWK: “I was not able to bring it in the first takes and it took me a while.”

OM: “Say the time. We’re not counting takes here, I’m saying the hours.”

JWK: “For heavens sake, I’m trying to take a shortcut. But they were like…less than four hours.”

OM: “What? Let me tell you, that was our first day on set as the whole gang and it was on a Monday.”

G!: “I bet they were like, who the hell is this they picked?!”

OM: “And then we came, Mwas is here, he’s doing his thing. That particular scene, it took long. It took almost four hours so you can imagine.”

The actor who kept messing up the lines went on to win Best Actor at the Durban Film Festival.

And now, a song entirely about ‘shambala’

“Wah!” I said as I tried to finish watching the video. Hard indeed, but worth a try. Am I talking about making the music, or actually watching it? You, my friend, will have to decipher that for yourself.

The video of the song called ‘Shamballa’ starts off with the showcasing of loads of shamballas on the rapper’s neck and wrists. The rapper, by the way, goes by the name of PMG. I have no idea what it stands for yet, but soon will. The lyrics, well, let me not get so much into the song for obvious reasons.

I think it would be fare enough if you listened to the track, watched the video, then later meet on the comment section below.

The video is available below.

Nonini Thinking of Going for Wahu and Lady Jay Dee

It all started like a joke but now from the look of things Nonini is actually serious with his plan of doing a collabo with Wahu and Bongo’s Lady Jay Dee.

Revealing this on his breakfast show on 1 FM, 1Breakfast, the genge rapper said that he conjuring up a music collabo with the two artistes considering they consistency in music and their success in the same. Right now, Lady Jay Dee has bagged the best video award for her video, Wangu , featuring Mr. Blue.

On the other hand, Wahu is enjoying massive airplay for her single, Still A Liar, and as if that is not enough just got nominated for the Kisima Awards in the Fusion Artiste of the year. In essence both artistes are undoubtedly top of their game no wonder Nonini would like to work with them.

I really can’t wait for that collabo. If you are eager like I am, keep tabs on Ghafla! coz we sure will keep you posted on that.

More Dangerous Scenes From Nairobi Half Life

The two main members of the Nairobi Half Life cast already told us about how dangerous it was shooting the film. I asked them about uncomfortable scenes with the gay scene and sex scene in mind but turns those weren’t even on the list of uncomfortable scenes. Check out their responses and transcript below.

Ghafla!: “Were there other scenes that might have been uncomfortable, maybe for you two or other members of the cast?”

Olwenya Maina: “One was when we upgraded our game as the gang and we were now targeting the middle-class and the well-to-do families. So, there was this particular scene we were doing in Kilimani and so it was a street scene [SPOILER ALERT] whereby we go and carjack a vehicle and then we go to another gate and the owner has a gun so there is an exhange and take cover [SPOILER ENDS]. Now, the place where we’re taking cover, there were no cops because the camera would have seen the APs, the security. But it was so risky because at the other side of the lane there were real cops who don’t know what is happening.”

Joseph K. Wairimu: “Real guns.”

G!: “You guys used real guns?”

JWK: “Yeah.”

OM: “So, it was quite risky. For a moment there we were like, we have to get this right in two takes or otherwise we can’t do it.”

JWK: “It was at night and it was like a hill. If the cops would have come from the other side, then it could have been another case. And also the other part that was really challenging for me was falling off from that shack. In filming, you have to do in a number of takes and nobody is comfortable with falling each time. The fall was a real fall, there were small cushions inside. And the distance–even if there were people waiting for me inside–psychologically, you’re not comfortable.”

G!: “How many times did you do that?”

JWK: “I can’t really recall but they were more than five or six times.”

Tron Legacy Actress Compares Her Sex Life with Kenyan Marathon Runners’ Stamina

American actress famed for her roles in TV series “House” and “Tron: Legacy” Olivia Wilde recently made shocking revelations by comparing her current sex life to the stamina possessed by “Kenyan marathon runners.” Olivia candidly spilled the beans about her past and present sex life during the These Girls monologues in NYC last week.

The American screen goddess shared these sentiments thanks to her current beau Jason Sudeikis, a Saturday Night Live resident funny man. Meanwhile, the American actress has teamed up with other leading female celebrities in the United States to ensure that women across the world have the same basic needs that many around most of the developed world take for granted.

Olivia is not new to Kenya considering she has been on a trip to Kenya last year where she visited the Shining Hope For Communities project in Kibera which has a school for girls in the heart of the slum.

Police officer roughed up after puking on Rabbit’s shoes

At some point in life, tables do actually turn, and when they do, it turns out to be more painful than expected. That is what a certain police officer learned after an encounter with Rabbit and his Eastlands crew last Saturday.

I will give it to you word for word, just like Kaka Sungura, the story teller, gave it to me. Crazy story this one.

Rabbit and company were at the peak of their night out as boys, enjoying themselves silly while walking around town, minding their own, when they suddenly ran into an unruly dead drunk plain-clothed police officer. Talking trash and maneuvering all over the place, the officer attempted to harass Rabbit and crew. In the process, he (officer) puked on Rabbit’s new shoes that were apparently bought in German.

“Ooooh, the horror,” Rabbit thought to himself as his boys quickly overturned the situation. What seemed to be a negotiation of arrest, quickly turned into that of a beat-down as the boys demanded for a piece of cloth to wipe off the puke.

The inevitable later took it’s course. Rabbit was handcuffed and the case taken to more sober authorities. Eventually, he was released (on the same night) and a piece of cloth was submitted, and his shoes wiped clean.

I can’t wait to hear a song about this. I’m pretty sure it’s on its way.

Amileena announces the release of her new video ‘why’

It’s been a while since we heard Amileena release a new track ever since ‘shine’. Not too long though. She is the most consistent, maybe the only, artiste from the TPF contest who is still going on strong musically.

Amileena is now about to drop her next big hit song (we are now used to receiving nothing but hits from her).

Her new video, produced by Psych Media, will be dropping shortly. Keep it Ghafla for the exclusives.

Just-A-Band Unveil Dope New Album Cover

Experimental group, Just-A-Band, on Saturday held a wrap party to celebrate the finalization of their album recordings via a Google+ Hangout.

Starting at 1700 GMT, the foursome chatted with fans and answered questions about their new record. They unveiled the new album’s artwork, which almost follows the colour scheme for their previous release, 82. Click the leading image to enlarge.

The hangout also featured special guests including JAB video alumni like Thimba who appeared in Away, Kibugi, Makmende’s first victim on Ha-He, K2 from Fly and his archnemesis from Huff+Puff, Elsaphan Njora. Makmende himself was also at the hangout. Madtraxx also made a special appearance.

They also gave fans a glimpse to Sorry For The Delay with the release of Probably For Lovers. Check it out here.

Just-A-Band continues to make some of the best album covers in the country. Check out their previous album covers below.

Photo Gallery: Jalang’o illustrates how a gigantic fish should be devoured

He is just naturally funny. On stage, on the road, even when eating on the table, Jalang’o will always get you smiling. Good thing he doesn’t let the fame come between him and his fish, otherwise we wouldn’t have this first hand lesson of how to devour a fish whole.

This poor boy saw it coming the moment Jalang’o sat on his table. He didn’t stand a chance.

Just-A-Band – Probably For Lovers

If you were not sufficiently psyched for Just-A-Band’s Sorry For The Delay, then Probably For Lovers was probably made for you.

The track features vocals from Blinky Bill and an almost unrecognizable Jim Chuchu going on Harry Kimani mode. It took me a couple of listens to notice that it’s a all male duet about love.

The title seems unsure but this is a straight up love song: “I’m here again, falling in love again. Hatutasengenyana na kudanganyana forever. Hatutapigana na kuumizana again.”

In a previous interview, the band clarified that they are more of an experimental group and not an exclusively electro band. And if songs like Ha-He and Migingo Express didn’t convince people, maybe this one might. At its danciest, it almost sounds like a lingala track as Katitu and Tsonga Disco meet just after the first chorus.

The song was written and produced by Just-A-Band with additional intrumentation by David Gitoho on bass and Isaac Muguna is the guy on those sweet guitar strings.

The video will be shot and released after the album release on the 27th of this month. Sorry For The Delay will be the group’s third album after Scratch To Reveal and 82. Listen to Probably For Lovers below.

The Afrikan King meets up with founder of Def Jam Records

Russell Simmons : Business magnate, founder of Def Jam, third richest man in hip hop (estimated to have a net-worth value of $340 million). When such a man stops to give you the time of day, that is true validation you are doing something right.

Well then in that case, The Afrikan King definitely has this down. Recently in New York, Kanja had a sit down with uncle Rush and DJ Silvastone. And played for him his single “Lights Out”. No word on what is coming from the meeting, everything is being kept very quiet. But reps from Kanja’s team can confirm that the meeting did in fact take place.

No matter what comes from it, this si definitely one artist taking major steps in his career. And major steps in the right direction. Let’s not forget the fairytale way Nigerian artist D’Banj was signed onto G.O.O.D music. Could this be the signs of a future Def Jam deal for Kanja? Talk about actually living in paradise.

DNA & Daddy Owen Condemned For Their Action

Last week Daddy Owen rejected his Kisima Awards Nomination but later reverted it. This morning, however we’ve woken up to news that rapper DNA and the entire Grandpa Records have also rejected their nomination for the awards.

This action by the artistes has not gone down well with Buddha Blaze. The artiste has been going H.A.M. on his Twitter handle since Friday morning after he got wind of Daddy Owen’s withdrawal from the awards. Buddha is of the opinion that any artiste who has been nominated should be humble and accept what comes to them or else they lose all together. “Even if you have won 10 Grammies and your songs used in 10 Oscar winning films, stay humble”, tweeted an agitated Buddha Blaze. The artiste also thinks that declining an award is a show of no gratitude.

Reacting to DNA’s action of releasing a press release withdrawing from the Nominations, this is what Buddha Blaze had to say, “Quite disappointed with artists that would go to extend of writing a press release to decline an award thinking they are bigger than life.” And if you think he was done, think again. Check this: “Funny that artsists refusing awards are associated with making Jesus music who clearly says be humble.”

What’s your take guys? Should artistes reject nominations? Ama this is the new “cool”?

Xtatic Goes Wild in Her New Video

It has been a while but Xtatic’s wildly anticipated video for Wild is finally out.

This is her first video since her ROCKSTAR4000/Sony signing and has been released through RCA. The song premiered on Capital FM a couple of months ago and might be the best glimpse into her upcoming debut album.

The video starts off with a clock just before she starts rapping, maybe to signify that Xtatic’s time has arrived. With the expectation that comes from a big label signing and international exposure, Xtatic delivers.

Between the single and the video coming out, Xtatic has been featured in international Websites, likened to Lauryn Hill and returned to South Africa to finsih work on her album. She has even won MTV Iggy’s highly competitive Artiste of the Week, a win saw her get on the site’s homepage and an exclusive interview on the site.

Wild was produced by The Fahrenheitz and video directed by Matt Stonier. See Xtatic killing it in her new video below.

After Stella Stella Stella, STL Shuts It Down

Fresh from releasing the remixes of Stella Stella Stella less than two weeks ago, the energetic STL has once again surprised her fans with her latest video release, Shut It Down.

Unveiled on Friday the song has heavy electro beats and brings out the bad girl STL. Complete with acrobats, the video is a must watch for you dance and electro fans.

This is STL’s third single and the video is out! The cool thing about this video is that though filmed sometime back it’s still so much dope. One thing is for sure; STL’s producer Christian Bastiansen is not sleeping on his job! Take a look at Shut It Down below;

DNA Also Rejects Kisima Awards Nomination!

Three days after the nominees for this year’s Kisima Awards slated for November 2nd were announced, rapper DNA has come out declining the nominations. DNA becomes the second artiste to reject a nomination after gospel sensation Daddy Owen.

In a press release sent to our newsroom, Grandpa Records (DNA’s recording label) said that they will not be participating in the awards because, I quote, “the people of Kenya have given DNA and Grandpa Records the highest award possible by making “Maswali Ya Polisi” the biggest song in the country. This is the award that is most important to us.”

The stable however asserted that they will continue to work hard to win the award with every song that they release. The group had two been nominated in the Best Boomba Artist category for their songs, “Maswali ya polisi” by DNA and “Fimbo ya kwanza” by Grandpa Family.

Ringtone Now Working With Foreign Artistes

Gospel singer Ringtone is set to host Grammy Award nominee Jamie Grace Harper in Kenya to work on a collabo. The two met several months ago and that’s when they agreed to work together.

Jamie Grace Harper, 21, is a contemporary Christian musician, songwriter and actress from Atlanta, Georgia. She is currently signed Gotee Records, a recording label by legendary Gospel singer Toby Mac. In a somewhat unique style, Jamie combines elements of hip hop, folk and pop into one distinct sound. Apart from the music project, Jamie will be working on humanitarian projects.

“Besides working on a number of songs, we plan to do some projects together,” revealed Ringtone to Pulse, “I am trying to push my career to another level. Doors are opening for me and I thank agod for the grace and favour.”

How Shooting Nairobi Half Life Was Dangerous for the Cast

Nairobi Half Life was shot on a budget that didn’t allow them luxuries like closing down streets and hiring a whole street full of paid extras. That meant that the film had to be shot on actual locations guerilla style. And the results were ranged from pity to violence from unassuming public.

Ghafla!: “There’s a scene you were fighting at Grogon, how do people around that area react when you’re doing such scenes?”

Olwenya Maina: “Kenyans are just eager, they’re ready to pounce on you. I remember while we were shooting that scene where I snatch Nini Wacera’s phone, there’s a guy who did not see the camera, who hadn’t seen the APs, the security guards, he came and punched me. I was rescued by guys while we were on set. It’s quite tricky especially when you can’t afford to pay a thousand extras, it becomes really hard.”

Joseph K. Wairimu: “And also in relation to that, there were so many different kind of scenes where so much would happen. As Olwenya is saying, there is one scene where he almost shot, and lynched too. And also when I was doing my other part, there is this mama who was screaming that blood is oozing from my face, she’s really concerned that I’m hurt. So, Kenyans are also caring.”

OM: “Mamas are caring.”

JKW: “Yeah. Or mama, I’ll say that.  But on the same note, they’re very fast in condemning and having mob injustice. So, they were interesting scenes to shoot.”

Redsan in a Collabo with Brick & Lace

This is probably one of the best news to Redsan’s fans after his long silence. Well, the first all-dancehall musician Redsan is back and is ready to take the industry by storm. Fresh from dropping his latest single, “Lose Control” the soft-spoken artiste says that he wants to do something out of the ordinary.

Speaking to Adele of 1Fm, Redsan revealed that he is currently working with Jamaican RnB reggae fusion musical duo Brick and Lace. The relationship between Redsan and the two sisters date back to 2009 when the duo was rumoured to grace Redsan’s album launch.

The Kenyan ragga maestro also revealed that he is keen on working on a major project since there were not many party songs in the market now. Attributing his silence to working on his album which is set to be released in December, Redsan also “cautioned” other artistes not to release their songs during this period because he would have grabbed all the airplay.

Redsan also hopes to work with Senegalese RnB and hip-hop artiste, Akon.

Did Pwani Life Go Too Far With Their Sexy Advert? (VIDEO)

Pwani Life, a consumer goods company, released an advertisement for Fresh Fri, a cooking oil brand of theirs. While the ad was probably aiming to be different, after Kenyans saw the ad, there was an outburst of people saying that it was too much for their taste.

Here is the ad:

{youtube}I7_C8O5jBlw{/youtube}

For those who didn’t manage to watch the ad for one reason or the other, let me break down the thing for you.

– In the initial sequence, the man can be seen stripping off some clothing items, while staring the woman right in the eye

– Then the woman bites her lip while looking at the man and cutting the vegetables.

– Then moaning sounds can be heard as vegetables are tossed in the air.

– Then splash waterfalls are simulated as liquids are poured across the screen.

– Then the woman actually smears oil on her face.

– Then the man removes some more clothing

– Then the couple play footsie on the beach in the final scene.

Looking at the combination of the above mentioned factors, did Pwani Life go to far in their quest for controversy with this ad, or is it okay by your standards?

“Homosexuality, I can go for it even if it’s kissing” – Nairobi Half Life’s Olwenya Maina

There’s a gay scene on Nairobi Half Life. It’s already “out” there. So, when we were interviewing to members of the film’s cast, it was impossible to let them go without asking them about it. Check out a transcript of the conversation below.

Ghafla!: “The film explores themes of homosexuality. You had interesting comments about that scene.”

Olwenya Maina: “As an actor, you must be able to go for anything. Of course there are actors who can’t go for things which contradict their beliefs, you have to respect them. Homosexuality, I can go for it even if it’s kissing, even if it’s making out. It’s just a feeling. The only problem is if you fail to de-role after acting it. You have to detach yourself in this job.”

G!: “Did someone here de-role after that scene?”

OM: [Laughs]

G!: “I need to hear your opinion on that.”

Joseph K. Wairimu: “I share the same sentiments with Olwenya Maina. As an actor you’re supposed to work because that’s your profession. But again, personally, I would say the most important thing is to be able paint the kind of character that you’ve been given. If you’re in a position to convince your audience that you’re kissing or it brings the same effect as kissing, if there are those choices, then you are entitled to whichever way that you’re going to go for in order to manoeuvre in that kind of situation. So, for intance in this movie, that character painted what was expected through other means.”

OM: “Our work is not to make evil triumph but if you’re an actor and you have to play this devil, you have to make it believable.”

G!: “I don’t know if it’s Kenyans or if it’s conservative people who are loudest, but that would have been a huge issue. People would have said, ‘boycott this movie because this scene is bad.’ Is it that the other parts were so good that people were ready to forgive that scene?”

OM: “I think we got cushioned. That particular scene happens almost at the climax of the movie. After following this movie, under the circumstances, you understand that this guy had no option.”

Labalaa and Mwakenya join the ‘rappers on strike’

The Basseline records came up with this track that got everyone talking. A track that talked about what would happen if all the rappers decided to strike one day. I’m still wondering what reason would ever cause that, but hey, this is just a song, right? And a pretty good one too.

O-Mae initially did this track solo and it was splendid. After sometime of receiving play and attention, he finally saw it too good to go without a remix, and so it was done.

Omae, the same rapper that brought us the song ‘turkana pela’, brought in Labalaa and Mwakenya to the ‘rappers on strike remix’. If you have heard these two guys’ individual flow, then you know that this track is now on fire. If, and just if, you did not like the track before, there is no way you won’t like it now. It’s that kind of song that gets better and better every time you listen to it.

This is the second time that Labalaa and O-Mae have been on the same track and I have to

say that I’m really loving the progress.

Have a listen to ‘rappers on strike remix’ below.

Remember the hit song ‘sasa ni lunch time’? Look at the singer now (video)

‘Lunch Time’ was the song that we grew up with (yes, I am young and I’m loving it). As part of the ‘zilizopendwa’, you know this is the type of song that never dies in popularity.

I refuse to use the terms ‘washed up’ to describe his absence in music. His is more of retirement from music. The man Gabriel Omolo has lived to see a lot, and most of it was his fans enjoying and dancing to his songs. He is now very old and living a ‘chini ya maji’ life back at home.

K24 caught up with him and went down history road where Gabriel reveals the times when his song was the ultimate hit and all that he endured during that time up until now.

If you were a fan of the song, you want to watch the video below.

How Jaguar Got Dumped

Getting dumped is not one of the things anyone would want to experience. It even gets worse when you are given the boot because of a silly small misunderstanding. Anyhow nothing can make sense to a scorned woman. This is the story of Jaguar.

So it happened that as Jaguar was coming from shooting his “Unaniwasha” video he was accompanied by the video vixens who being exhausted decided to spend the night at Jaguar’s place. So, in the morning when Jaguar’s chic came to visit, she found the other lasses in the crib together with his man and her imaginations ran wild. Angry, she stormed out of the place with Jaguar in pursuit but nothing he did could stop her from leaving thereby ending the relationship. So far, Jaguar’s efforts to get her back have been futile as the chic has not been willing to make peace.

However, according to 1FM, Jaguar regrets losing his girlfriend this “foolish mistake”. But as things are, Jaguar has obviously moved on and done greater things with himself.

Longombas Making Their Way Back To Kenya

After pulling an MIA in the Kenyan entertainment scene for close to seven years, the Longomba duo, Lovy and Christian, is set to come back in the country in December. In a tweet, the group said that it is coming back to take the country by storm.

“People have been sleeping & we’re coming to shock you”, swanked Longombas’ tweet. The group’s return to the country coincides with their nomination for the Kisima Awards slated for early next month. The Longomba brothers were nominated in two categories; Best Collabo and Ragga/Raggae.

Currently in Los Angeles, the duo is well-known for being African multi award winning Afro/pop group known for their mixture of African pop, reggae/dancehall and world music. The Longomba brothers are renowned for their tracks Piga Makofi and Vuta Pumz which ruled the airwaves back in 2005.

Let’s wait and see if they still have the “magic touch” when they come back.

Daddy Owen Turns Down Kisima Award & Kshs. 2M Prize

And that’s even before the ceremony. Daddy Owen is at it again. The artiste is really popular in the gospel and secular circles. And popularity comes with awards, which the singer doesn’t seem to want.

He once won a Groove Award which he decided to share with Juliani as he accepted it. Now, the singer has been nominated for the recently announced Kisima Awards. After the announcement, Daddy Owen even considered withdrawing from the awards to make way for new artistes, like his collborator on Mbona.

I thank my fans 4the support uv shwn me 4yrs!!Ths year dnt wanna participate in any awards,i wana raise new talent like Denno @KisimaAwards…i wish they cud nominate Denno instead… He deserves it.

Daddy Owen has been nominated for Artiste of the Year, which comes with a Kshs. 2 million cash prize. After consulting with his fans, Daddy Owen then decided to stay in the race but to give his award and Kshs. 1 million to Denno and the rest to the Mbona Campaign should he win:

Verdict frm my fans! If i win the awards i gv to Denno n dedicate them to #mbonaCampaign, if i win the 2m i gv Denno 1m n the other 1m goes to #mbonaCampaign.”

Mbona has also been nominated for Collabo of the Year, Best Gospel, Best Reggae and Music Video of the Year.
