Apart from his diverse business network and a successful music career, Kibera’s finest Octopizzo is also a philanthropist. He was recently joined Kenya Red Cross in donating foodstuffs to people of Turkana, an initiative by Kibera youth.

Here is his message:
“Today am challenging every single person out there that don’t always wait for tragedy to happen for them to help,You don’t have to wait till Turkana people start dying of hunger for you to donate food,You can help with a little you have now and save the tragedy. MAKE A DIFFERENCE SAVE THE FUTURE!!!!”

Man Wazimu Turns Down Collaboration with a Jamaican Dancehall Star

Man Wazimu a.k.a Virgin Man recently announced the release of his second album. He is still working on some of the songs to include on his sophomore record. Looks like some of the things he had planned might not go through.

Man Wazimu was meant to work on a song with 26-year old Jamaican star, Jemineye, who was to record his bit in Jamaica and send it to Man Wazimu. When Jemineye’s deadline passed, Man Wazimu inquired on the progress and Jemineye informed him that he was yet to lay down his lines.

Man Wazimu, known for his strict code and hate for incompetence, immediately canceled the arrangement. Jemineye tried explaining that getting studio time is not as easy as many would think but Man Wazimu had already made up his mind. Jemineye persisted, Man Wazimu declined.

Man Wazimu will go ahead with the album recordings without the help of Jemineye, who finished in the Top 10 of Magnum Kings & Queens of Dancehall competition.

Heineken Takes James Bond Party To Nakuru

As far as I remember, no movie has received so much buzz around it before like the yet-to-be released Skyfall by James Bond (Daniel Craig). In the same spirit, James Bond’s official sponsor, Heineken, is throwing a party for James Bond fans in Nakuru.

Dubbed James Bond Night, the gig will go down this Friday at the newly established Rafikiz Bar and Lounge in Nakuru. And just to bring on board the “James Bond – Heineken feel”, the dress code will be “spy” (green and white). The party kicks off at 9PM.

To crown it all, entry is absolutely free. So, there is a plan for all you Naxvegans.

Video Release: Tiera Gee’s Seductive New Casanova

Stephanie Khatiera also known as Tiera Gee from Mombasa is back with a brand new video for her latest single, Casanova.

Casanova was released a couple of months ago and she has finally released the video. “It was great working on the track with Saint P formerly at Homeboyz who really did inspire me well both vocally and lyrically,” Tiera Gee said.

In the video, we can see her seductively frolicking on tables and showing her dance moves together with dancers/models. “I love what I do and, well, I had fun executing this. It’s a different part of me, since I’m known for Swahili songs. I dared this tune in English and in a way managed to have my identity as Malkia from Coast by borrowing Swahili words. It can only get better can’t predict the future, but excellence and new stuff is all Gee’s got.”

The video was made by 1488 Superstar Films who also did Jackie Chandiru’s Gold Digger in Uganda. You can check out behind-the-scenes photos here. Check out the Casanova video below.

Prof. Sam Ongeri Condemns Alai Immediately After Joining Twitter

Last week, Foreign Affairs Minister, Sam Ongeri joined Twitter and it seems he has already become accustomed to the way things are run on the micro-blogging site. Well, Ongeri is already ruffling shoulders here and there. His first victim? None other than controversial tech blogger, Robert Alai.

So, it happened that Alai had tweeted alleging that the DPM and TNA’s presidential candidate, Uhuru Kenyatta was “buying” loyalty in Kisumu by sending people to clear bar bills for customers in leading joints at the Lakeside town. Take a look;
“Listening to confessions on how Uhuru through Onyango Oloo is buying loyality in Kisumu.”

Then followed this one;
TNA has been regularly sending agents to pay bills of patrons in bars/pubs like Tummies and Signature.”

The irate professor could not take this lying down, so he retaliated with this sullen tweet;

“Funny enough that we wan’t unity in kenya but some bloggers spreading propaganda that a presidential candidate is buying loyalty , Very bad”

This is the second time the minister is involved in a Twitter outburst, the very first coming last week on Friday where he castigated the Kenyan Online Community for referring to MPs as MPigs. The Nyaribari Masaba legislature, was not amused by the name and said that it was unfair for Kenyans to refer to their leaders as such. Here is the tweet;
“#KOT I still insist Its unfair to call leaders Mpigs ! Leaders and Citizens must relate well to have a peaceful nation ,happy Sabbath”
And then this followed yesterday morning;
“My humble message to all #KOT #RespectLeadersNow Because Its God Who chose them to lead , Ill talk does not reward . Good day”

Do you think the professor will engage in tweefs like other KOT? You can follow him on Twitter @ProfOngeri.

Rapper Gives ‘Everything’ in Dope New Track

You might remember GoldenBoy Odongo from this ill freestyle here, which he did on a 2 Chainz beat. He is definitely one of the best rappers around.

Fresh off the back of Death To All, the ever working GBO has already released his second single, Everything. On the record GBO is joined once again by the sultry TK. GBO shows his storytelling prowess, fantasizing about what it would be like achieving ‘everything’ he has ever dreamed of by following his passion: music.

The song was produced by Miagi man, K-Yos, providing his typical hard hitting beats. GBO is definitely forming himself as more than a rapper but a motivator as well. If you like it, then watch out for GBO’s EP, The Birth of Me, dropping later this year. Check out Everything below.

Nonini already has plans for the Kisima Awards’ Ksh. 2 Million… incase he wins

Nonini is one man who has always had one foot ahead of the other. Always moving and making changes. Always a step ahead of other artistes. I mean, this guy already has plans for the Kisima awards grand prize, which is Sh. 2 Million. He has the planned well laid out and ready to be executed should he bag the money. Now, that is a man with strategy.

It’s not about counting the chicks before they hatch. Not at all. This is just the usual selfless acts that Nonini is so fond of these days. If you thought he plans to move out of his current place of residence, into a more lavish one. That ain’t it. This is more about charity and that is what Nonini is all about.

Nonini has just issued an appreciation message to his fans through Ghafla!Kenya, for making it possible for him to be nominated for the Kisima Awards’ Artiste of the Year, along with his song, ‘Colour kwa Face’.

“I was delighted to find out that i was nominated for Kisima Awards for the song ‘Colour Kwa face’! Glad that specific song about raising awareness of persons living with albinism was recognized. Thanks Wagenge. If by any chance I do win the 2M cash prize attached to artiste of the year. I will channel that money towards the on going Colour Kwa Face Sunscreen Lotion Campaign that wants to raise up to 20,000 tubes of sunscreen lotions to supply to different schools across the country that have kids with albinism
who need this precious commodity to avoid complications like Cancer. Thanks!” Nonini said through Ghafla!

Well, I guess now you have a ‘real’ reason to vote.

Take a look at the behind the scenes footage of the ‘Colour kwa Face’ video shoot below.

Prezzo and Goldie on Holiday in New York (Photos)

Former Big Brother Africa housemates (and supposed lovers),  Prezzo and Goldie , are currently on holiday in New York. Prezzo, ONE campaign Ambassador, was invited to the US in back in September (as part of his new status), to attend the grand opening of the $1 billion Barclays Centre, where Jay-Z performed eight shows and even took had time to hang out with Prezzo.

With the festivities over, the two decided to unwind. Goldie met up with Prezzo later on where they even posed for photos wearing the same hoodie with the same inscription. Love in the air, or is it? Take a look;

Listen to the single HERE.

What Do You Hate the Most About Ghafla?

In order to serve you better, we have decided to get feedback so here’s your chance.

I have met alot of avid readers who have raised many an issue about the beautiful and informative site Ghafla. And while some are trolls, some actually have helpful feedback.
So what miffs you to no end? Could it be one of these:

#1. Annoying ads
Let’s face it, that Aaliyah is calling ad is really annoying. And maybe together we can get Baba Ghafla to at least mute that annoying pop-up ad.

#2. Excessive coverage of particular artists
The writers in the team are human. And let’s face it, some artists have come to understand how things work: if there is a lot of information about you that we can easily access, we will write about you. Octopizzo is one such intelligent artist who has learnt to make our work easy ergo we reciprocate by writing about him. It’s not about bribes, it’s about ease of access to information about you.
However, with that said, we need to change that trend.

#3. Pathetic video quality
Let’s face it, Baba Ghafla needs to upgrade some of the software we use. Someone once asked whether we use hidden cameras to record our footage. Another asked whether we are trying to cut our teeth in preparation for the adult entertainment industry… No! it’s just a bad camera but we’ll fix that real soon.

#4. Flooding your Time Line
Sorry about that. For all the times Chege Cege, the genius behind our social media marketing strategy retweets your retweet or when he tags you to a story, on behalf of the team, I apologise. We shall not be trying to tweak anything in this regard.

#5. The fact that the team is all male
Please, please, cosign my petition to populate the team with some attractive females. We need women up in Ghafla because the office is choking with testosterone. So please help us serve you better by ensuring Ghafla gets a female touch.
But the list doesn’t end there, add the things that need to change in the comment section and help build the brand that is Ghafla!Kenya.

IMAX Reduces Prices

IMAX has reduced its ticket prices. But then again, the prices had gone up last week.

The introductory price for the special edition of Avatar is now Kshs. 800, down from Kshs. 1,000 so it’s kind of back to where it was anyway. The price for children and students is Kshs. 500.

The first and last show of the day remains at Kshs. 400 for everyone. The 12:00 p.m. showing for Bourne Legacy is Kshs. 600 for adults and Kshs. 400 for children and students.

IMAX is currently only showing The Bourne Legacy and Avatar, with an extra evening show of Avatar added after public demand.

Chics, Here’s How to Tell Whether You Suck in Bed: Jua Cali

So this morning Jua Cali was on 1Fm trying to solve your relationship issues. It happened that some random chic wrote in complaining that after a one-night stand the dude did not pick her calls afterwards. Her problem? She wanted to know whether she was a total waste in bed.

“Ukiona sichukui simu yako ujue ilikua mbaya sana!!!” declared the genge musician. Asked on whether he has ever had the fruit and bounced, Jua Cali was candid enough to admit that he indeed has. He continued to say that it is so difficult to tell a chic in the face that she is bad in bed and that the best way to express it is by ignoring her calls after the encounter.

“Dame msharp ataread tu signs,” articulated Jua Cali “Besides, akiona nimemwacha then chali mwingine amwache ye ajijazie tu.” I know some of you will argue that that is a coward move to pull but so be it.

In other unrelated news, Jua Cali is currently working on his Tugenge Yajayo album will is rumored to be dropped soon.

Juliani and Rufftone on the same track! How did we miss this?

I have no idea how this flew right passed us and judging by the number of hits that the YouTube track currently has, very few of you know about this track. These are one of those awesome tracks hit you and leave you wondering how in the world you never knew about them in the first place.

New kid in the Gospel block going by the name Malachi just stepped in the music industry in style and has already made a statement of his own. Rolling with the big wigs. Pretty smart kid, I’d say. He managed to bring together two gospel legends, Juliani and Rufftone, on the same track, and still managed to do pretty good (considering he was standing among musical giants and all).

The song titled ‘LIVE’ has actually been on air for the past month and I am surprised that not so many people know about it. The song is really good so I know for sure that that’s not the issue. I just don’t get it. Put Juliani and Rufftone on the same track and that is a destined hit. So what the hell went wrong on this one?

This week, Jimmy Gait’s ‘Appointment’ was the most discussed video

He definitely knew what he was doing when he decided to go back to the roots of his music, worship songs. When Jimmy Gait first stepped into the Kenyan music scene, he was all over the worship songs, which is the reason for his large fan base. After all the hype, he joined the new school gospel type of music, which isn’t bad at all.

Well, his latest song, ‘appointment’ just went back there, and sure enough, everybody is loving it. The simplicity, originality, message in the song, down to the video, everything is about this song is just lovely.

I am not the only one to say though. The fans have agreed. On YouTube, ‘Appointment’ is the most discussed music video ‘this week’ and everything on the comments section is all positive. Everybody showing love for what seems to be a come-back of Jimmy Gait to his initial style of music.

Better watch this space, but first, watch the video below.

Esther Arunga Claims Otieno Kajwang’ Tortured Quincy

A Facebook account under the name Esther Arunga is now hitting out at Immigration Minister and Mbita MP, Otieno Kajwang’. The Timberlakes have previously claimed that the government is the reason they fled the country but this time they are pinpointing the Minister. Read the Kajwang’ part of the letter below.

Otieno Kajwang’ who TORTURED my husband in the name of Immigration charges can sing his “mapambano” tunes but has failed as a party’s top minister, youth misery alleviater and to worsen the matter, his constituency Mbita is one of the least developed.

I hope he will not sing his way to the Senate as he sang his way to the legislative assembly. That remains a story for another day. It is a sad day for me to be an ODM segment, it is a sad time to imagine that you’re anywhere near the presidency unless you overhaul the secretariat.

My advise to you Mr Rt Hon PM, these vultures whom I’d faced for press briefings during my press interview takes had confirmed they were never loyal to you but for cornucopia!! You abandoned the loyal people and retained tapeworms who just but continuously suckle your kinetic energy. They owe you no loyalty in ODM. They’ve gagged the youth from Nyanza from take center stage politics.

CIDs affiliated with ODM have been misused for selfish reasons, especially in the torture that we experienced for political expressions and bill of rights stamped on. “Mapambano” era has passed, tutapambana hadi 2090?? Let’s all kill this “mapambano” slogan and concentrate in refurbishing reality. He’s not yet constructed bridges connecting Rusinga Island and Mbita mainland.”

Prezzo’s Golden Goose

Everyone has something they do that none other can deplicate. That something you do always gives you results sometimes beyond what you had the audacity to hope for.

El Prezidente’s is working with Tanzanian artists. Over the years Prezzo has done alot of songs, blessed us with a slew of hits both alone and in collaboration with other artists.

But in my humble opinion, Prezzo doesn’t quite come alive on his tracks as he does when he features Tanzanian artists. Think about it, there is “Nipe Nikupe” which featured AY and T.I.D featured in “Leo Ni Leo”. Everytime Prezzo has featured a Tanzanian artist, he has absolutely murdered the track. Perhaps it’s about time he got on a jam with another Tanzanian. Maybe Ali Kiba or Diamond. What say you?

Have a listen to the tracks i mention above and be the judge of that.

Kidum is Back After Controversial Trip

Kidum is back in the country after the Canadian trip that was marred with controversy and contradicting media reports.

According to some media houses, the singer had been arrested in Canada and his documents confiscated denying him the chance to come back to the country. Allegations that were later refuted by his spokesman.

His planned performance at the last Blankets & Wine was then canceled over what management said were “due to unavoidable circumstances.” He is now back and will perform at the next event alongside Dwele during the 39th edition of the monthly Blankets & Wine music showcase.

Will Robert Alai Be Kenya’s First Inspector General of Police?

You know him the controversial tech blogger who is famous for raffling feathers with his tweets and Facebook posts. In a very unprecedented move, Robert Alai is now marshaling up support from YOU to help him become Kenya’s first Inspector General of Police under the new Constitution.

Alai, one of Twitter bigwigs in Kenya, took to where he frequents most – Twitter – to announce his interest in vying for the post. Under the hash-tag #Alai4InspectorGeneral, the blogger aims to reach as many people as possible who will advocate for him. “Kenya Police needs a modern well equipped and trained police service. I can do it. #Alai4InspectorGeneral” tweeted Alai.

Of course this would not pass without a few negative comments from people he has previously had tweefs with or who are just “natural” haters. As such KOT came up with #CrimesAlaiWouldSolve, a hash-tag meant to ridicule Alai’s bid. Take a look at this string of crazy tweets;

#CrimesAlaiWouldSolve Why Tom Mboya’s statue is on Moi Avenue…and why he is surrounded by flamingos
#CrimesAlaiWouldSolve mbona vitz haioshwi kwa sink
#CrimesAlaiWouldSolve Why the snake was let in Noah’s ark after it f***d up Adam and Eve.
#CrimesAlaiWouldSolve Nani alichapa wakorino wote kichwa?
#CrimesAlaiWouldSolve  mbona DSTV iko na radio channels

Meanwhile, Alai still believes that he is the best man for the job of top cop. So, he is busy gathering numbers to support. Follow the drama HERE.

Omogi Okite for this week’s ‘Thursday Nite Live @ Choices’

This Thursday, you will get the chance to witness the guitar guru at work. Omogi Okite and his familiarity with the guitar strings has made him a marvel in concerts and everywhere he goes. Having spent more than two decades in the States, he is now back to Kenya, it’s music and culture.

Omogi Okite will be performing at this week’s ‘Thursday Nite Live @ Choices’ (18th October 2012). If you are not familiar with the Thursday Nite Live @ Choices’ event, well, it is what might just be the best weekly jazz, acoustic and roots event that Nairobi has to offer at the moment and a pretty good one for that matter.

Live performance, live band, infront of a live audience… it doesn’t get better than this.

Amileena’s ‘Why’ video finally released. Check it out

The much awaited, much anticipated video is finally out. We have been going on and on about this new song and I bet you have been wondering what all the fuss was about. Wonder no more, for all is about to be revealed in this new and hot video that Amileena has just done.

The song, ‘Why’ dives straight into the family issues, actually, relationship issues that often arise and cause drift among lovers. The usual, “I will pack my bags and leave right now,” kind of thing, but a lot more theatrical. It has always been evident and so out there that Amileena can fit both singing and acting into her list of talents but this song just brings them all out so clearly. Quite talented, this strong voiced Amileena.

The music, touchy and emotional as usual. Kind of music that a girl would play on repeat immediately after her boyfriend has just let her go, or viceversa. Also gets you thinking about your love life, if you have one.

All in all, this is the type of song that you just can’t help but sing along. Lovely tune, top notch vocals, illustrative video, what more could you ask for. Amileena has done it again.

Check out the video below.

Top 15 Kenyan songs of all time

They are the songs that come on air and you just go crazy with good memories of good times that flood your mind.

They make you wish Kenyan artistes could still make this kinds of music, from way back. These are the musical legends right here.

1. Hakuna matata – Swahili Nation
“Mpenzi, hakuna matata. Kila kitu kitawa sawa sawa. My lover, you don’t have to worry. Everything will be alright mpenzi we…”
Even at that time when Kenyan music was not all that, this guys managed to make this hit track go international. Even your old folks can sing along to this with smiles on their faces. It is that kind of track that gets to everyone.

2. Tafsiri hii – Kalamashaka
“Tafsiri hii, maisha kule D ni mazii, ninalia nikitumia M.I.C…”
I was really surprised when I heard my mom rap along to the lyrics of this hip hop track. I mean, really? Hard core hip hop track like this? Then it must have been pretty good? Yes, sir! It still is.

3. Uhiki – Hardstone
“Hardstone ina di yard, Lord, put up your hand and scream…”
Wherever this guy is right now, I’m sure he knows that he is a legend in the making of Kenyan music. We celebrate this track till date.

4. Ninanoki – Nameless feat Amani
“Cheki chikidi, ako na bidii, ana-dance kuku, huku na huku”
Nameless will forever be one of the biggest Kenyan artiste. From those days till now, this guy still rocks the crowd with his music.

5. Mos mos – E-Sir feat Brenda
“Mos mos mos mos. Pole pole mos mos. Twazienda mos mos. Haraka haraka haina baraka.”
Unfortunately, this song became a huge hit shortly after his death. Still, a national hit it was.

6. Holiday – Nameless
“Tukule nyama choma, aha! Kwenye beach na ma-tusker, aha! Tukule nyama choma, Kenya hakuna matata!”
This was the party anthem for quite sometime. Good excuse to get and stay drunk all through the weekend.

7. Mwewe – Sema
“Namwona mwewe…”
This group succumed to a very controversial break-up but they left us with a couple of hits that we will never forget. This just happens to be on top of the list.

8. Manzi wa Nairobi – Nonini
“Machali leo hamtalala… cheki yule, gagaga, cheki yule, gigaga…”
Though controversial, this was exactly what the Kenyan youth were waiting for. The go-ahead to act crazy and speak your mind.

9. Malaika – Redsan
“Mbona waniwacha? Mbona wanificha? Mimi nahofia kwako moyoni…”
This was one of the best songs from Redsan back then, among many. In-fact, if my memory serves me right, almost all his songs were hits at that time

10.Mwikhulu – Rufftone
In this song’s chorus, all I can make out is the word ‘Mwikhulu’ but I could still not get enough of it.

11. Haiya – Harry Kimani
“Haiya haiya haiya haiya”
No, really! Those were the chorus lyrics of the song and though it may appear repetitive and boring, the song was nothing of the sort. This is in-fact one of the most soulful Kenyan songs that you would love even without understanding a single word.

12. Compe – Bamboo
“Usilete compe kwanza kwa manzi yangu manze, I say! Usiniletee. Huyo ni manzi yangu manze, eeh!”
As if I had to remind you the lyrics to this song.

13. Bless my room – Necessary Noise
“Bless my room when I wake up early in the morning, I say a prayer and I be okay…”
This also goes down as one of the best videos that was done at that time.

14. Kenyan boy Kenyan girl – Necessary Noise
“Kenyan boy would you come take a walk with me, namtaka chali wa Nairobi…”
This was the jam in all the javs to every hood and every youth could sing along to the lyrics down to the very last beat. This group should have never separated.

15. Naleta action – Prezzo feat Nazizi
“Looking for my name, Naitwa Jackson. Toka Kenya hadi Bongo, naleta action. Mamanzi wakiulizwa, wata-mention. C.M.B President, up in your residence.”
He brought swag in music even before the word itself. He single-handedly raised the standards of being a celebrity and as much as you want to argue about that, deep down you know that it is a fact. Suck it up!

DK Now Getting “Satisfaction” with Anto Neosoul

I know this will get some people talking but if something is good don’t trip, give credit where it’s due. So on this particular jam, Gospel artiste DK (better known as DK Kwenye Beat) has put his together with afro neo-soul singer, Anto Neosoul.

Dubbed “Sari Sari” (loose meaning for satisfaction) the song is so full of energy that it just gets you dancing. The video starts at court scene but graduates into a street dance where DK engages the crowd in doing killer dance routines. Produced by Saint P and directed by J Blessing, the video is graced by the big names in the Gospel industry; Mr. T, DJ Mo, DJ Sadic, MOG and Jimmy Gait.

Though Anto Neosoul does not appear in the video his strong vocals standout, more so in the chorus and the song’s climax. This awesome video was shot on location at The Macmillan Library and the adjacent street. Watch this space; I can see this song becoming a huge hit.

Starflix Brings The Dictator to the Big Screen

You can now catch Sacha Baron Cohen’s latest comedy on the big screen locally. The Dictator is now showing at Starflix Cinemas in Prestige.

The film is about Admiral General Aladeen who arrives in the United States to address the UN as his country, Republic of Wadiya, faces military intervention.

The film was written by and stars Sacha Baron Cohen himself. Cohen is famously known (at least for those who believe it’s him) as entertainment journalist, Ali G from Da Ali G show.

He also played an unassumingly hilarious TV reporter from the Middle East in BORAT. He also played a fashion journalist and aspiring designer in the wildly offensive Bruno.

Cohen brings back his highly misogynistic humor, this time, not as a journalist, but as the leader of an Arab country, which is obviously partly modeled from former Libyan leader, Muamar Gadaffi. For his irreverent comedy, he has won numerous awards from BAFTA to LA Film Critics among others.

The Dictator is directed by Larry Charles who has directed all the Sacha Boren Cohen mockumentary feature films. Other features he has directed include Masked & Anonymous and Religulous. He has also directed numerous episodes of Curb Your Enthusiasm and written for Seinfeld and Entourage.

The Dictator will show at Starflix Prestige daily at 12:00 p.m., 7:00 p.m. and 8:45 p.m. For more details, call 0708 251 275 or 0786 509 575. Check out The Dictator trailer below.

Navio Turns Down Kaka Sungura and Mejja

If you remember well, not so long ago we told about how Navio was unable to settle on a Kenyan artiste to work with on the remix of his song. Well, it now appears he could not settle on any Kenyan artsiste to feature in his song.

Initially, Navio could not decide on whom to settle on between Kaka Sungura AKA Rabbit and Calif Records’ Mejja. Well, the song was released yesterday and NONE of the artistes is featured in it. Instead, Navio picked AY (who was in the plan originally), Papito, Inoss B and Martha Smallz.

Now am left asking myself is it that Kenyan artistes are not that good or what? Because I believe both Kaka Sungura and Mejja have all it takes to be considered good enough musicians if their music success is anything to go by. What are your views guys?

Listen to the official remix to One and Only below;

The song got out a couple of weeks back and now, the video is just a few days from release. Fast rising rapper Mwakenya teamed up with Khaligraph Jones on this hip hop track and what may seem as the beginning of a long series of collaborations between the two.

The song is hot and simple and I have a feeling the video will be the same. Check out the behind the scenes photos as we wait anxiously for the video.

Nairobi Half Life Selected by the American Film Institute for Festival

Nairobi Half Life has been selected by the American Film Institute to screen at their upcoming film festival.

NHL was selected as one of only six Breakthrough selections, meaning it was fairly unknown and it impressed the committee only after viewing it.

The AFI Fest will also serve as NHL‘s North American premiere and will share the festival with Oscar frontrunners like Armour, Kon-Tiki, Beyond the Hills and Pieta.

Whereas films like The Angels’ Share and Like Someone In Love make it through because their high profile directors (Ken Loach and Abbas Kiarostami), Tosh being a first-time director might have just gotten his big break.

The Academy Awards entrants were announced last week but AFI is where the Oscar race really begins for the Foreign Language films. Whereas the AFI committee will watch every film that was submitted, the Academy members are only likely to watch films that already have buzz or big-name directors. AFI Fest is where NHL might get that.

Music Scratch Cards Set to Revolutionize the Industry

Last week, we told you about Octopizzo launching his new music scratch cards. But few know about the new service that is expected to revolutionize Kenyan music.

The project is aimed at ensuring artistes are in total control of their distribution, meaning they get to keep 100% of the scratch card sales they make and 50% of future transactions.

The artiste themselves will sell scratch cards to their fans who then go to the Website, mdundo.com and enter the PIN on the card and their phone number. The fans will then be able to download the music from the artiste.

Besides Octopizzo, the project is currently working with some of the country’s best artistes, Juliani, P-Unit, Jua Cali, Mejja, Kenrazy, Collo, Nazizi, Rap Damu and Sosuun among others. Mdundo is financially supported by 88mph in partnership with Google.
