Maina And King’angi In The Morning: Are Kenyan Men Useless?

Today Maina And King’ang’i were discussing Kenyan men and how to deal with them.

According to a lady caller who called in yesterday, Kenyan men are hopeless and they need women as harsh as Kenyan women. If you talk to this (Kenyan) man politely, he will look for another harsh woman out there! They need women who can cut them down to size!

And what a storm this opinion stirred up at Classic FM this morning! Men were tripping over each other to call in to assert their dominance and having a bull dance about what they feel is wrong with Kenyan women.

And at this point I found myself wondering whether these men know they are the reason Kenyan lads of this my generation are complete mumu (fools)! They see their fathers doing silly things like arguing about what a man should be and they get confused. A female caller actually touched on what i’m getting at when she commented that it’s because of the folly of Kenyan men that there are alot of street urchin in Kenya. These children were sired by mugu (foolish) men who then took off. And then their sons grow up thinking that is the mark of a real man! But enough of the sermon! Let’s get back into it.

RADIO.jpg
A female caller called in to say that Kenyan men want models, wives, baby making machines and whatnot but they still don’t appreciate Kenyan women. The woman said that Kenyan men expect a woman to work, discipline your children and be good to your family. She took issue with Kenyan men talking about Ugandan and Tanzanian women who go down on their knees but forget that their men bring real gold home.
The next caller was male and he said that if you want men to tow the line, the women should be good. he sought to justify having clandestine lovers saying that wives don’t make the home hospitable hence the lady that we know as “Plan B” will “nyenyekea”. Mugu (foolish) speech this! This caller angered me by he referring to women as pumpkins and he doesn’t sound like Denzel himself.
At this point an argument errupted in the office as we debated on why it is Kenyan men feel their women owe them the world yet they fail to deliver even thistles! I feel Kenyan men need to style up because you can’t expect the world from your women yet you are no Chris Hemingway or Uncle Chim Tuna!

A female caller called in and said alot of sense. She said that the reason Kenyan men are useless is that they spend so much money on the clande and leave nothing at home so ofcourse the wives won’t make them home a bed of roses.
The next caller was a man who called in to say Maina is not a joker, he is serious about destroying Kenyan women. He said that you provide a home for her, food, everything but she still expects to be harsh? He dared Maina to call the lady who called in to call him back and tell Kenya whether or not she has a woman. He asserted that he is not a child. Infact, he is a real man! A man with a backbone because he had real male role models growing up.

To this Uncle Chim Tuna says: did you write the book on masculinity? No? Then shut up about this real man nonsense. You are the reason silly Kenyan boys think fighting everyone at the rave makes them a man! And for the record, a tiger doesn’t need to announce it’s tigritude! A man beating his chest is a shell of a man over compensating.
A female caller called in to say that for a woman to be rude to her man, he has to have done something wrong. She took issue with the fact that women work then they have to make the home a home. Kenyan men go to the bar, come home where they are strangers to their families and then they demand sex? She said that King’ang’i needs to be serious because how will the woman be expected to make a home when she knows her husband who swore to love and provide for her is keeping a silly girl somewhere whom he spends more on than he does on his own family?

Citizen TV’s Swaleh Mdoe Bashes His Haters LIVE ON AIR!

Citizen TV’s managing editor and Swahili news anchor, Swaleh Mdoe, yesterday evening hit out at his decriers for baseless criticism. And what a better way to do it other than live on air!?

After reading the news, Swaleh went in on his Facebook critics for alleging that his grandfather did not tell him his “tafakaris” and that just comes up with them. Swaleh, who is also a published author with five books to his name directed the “idlers” as he termed them to buy his books and read the “tafakaris”.He also said that if the malingerers did not have grandfathers too bad for them.

The veteran anchor also clarified that he’s NOT on Facebook but is on Twitter and urged guys to follow him. (His handle is @SwalehMdoe).

Here’s what he said verbatim;
“kuna watu wasio na kazi ya kufanya kwenye facebook ambao wanasema eti babu yangu hakuniabia hizi tafakari zangu wanunue kitabu wasome, tafakari hizo na kama hawana mababu zao,ole wao,na mie siko kwenye FB,nifwateni kwenye “dushi”basi. Mtafakarini  hayo!

Shaffie gives you crazy but hilarious tips on how not to get bored while stuck in traffic in a matatu

I know you have been through one of those extremely slow traffic jams that seem not to open up any time soon, especially on traffic notorious roads like Ngong Road and Mombasa Road. Well, our very own fun loving, crazy radio presenter, Shaffie Weru just prepared a list of hilarious things you could to either maintain or completely lose your sanity or that of your fellow passengers, if stuck in traffic.

Here goes,

Next time you get stuck in jam, do the following to kill time especially if you are in a matatu.

1. Pick your nose and show your neighbor. Then, while giggling very excitedly, tell them “Its the biggest I have caught this week!”

2. Whistle “Mary had a little lamb!”. Repeat
twice while dramatizing.

3. Pretend you are about to puke on your neighbor, then when they duck, say “GOTCHA!”

4. Doze off. Sleep on your neighbor every few seconds. If they wake you up, apologize for fifteen minutes. Then repeat.

5. If there is music on the matatu, sing along but make sure you are really off-key! If anyone complains, start singing the national anthem.

6. Ask your neighbor when they had sex for the first time. Irrespective of the answer, say, “Acha Mushene!”

7. Pick your phone, say hallo, wait for a few minutes … then say a loud NOOOOO! Then, shake everyone’s hand while saying goodbye! Insist the caller was God and he says you will have an accident. Then alight.

8. Sleep for five minutes, wake up and say to your neighbor, “Mbwa wewe!” … then go back to sleep. Repeat every five minutes!

9. Sleep and make sex sounds… then … Come.

10. Start preaching, sing one praise song, say a closing prayer, then immediately after saying Amen, start singing those obscene one-man guitar songs!

MPs Throw Out Proposal To Extend Drinking Hours

Alcoholic party-goers were today saddened by news that despite a spirited attempt by Mt. Elgon MP Fred Kapondi to amend the Alcoholic Drinks Control Act, parliament unceremoniously rejected it.

Bars, pubs and alcohol sellers were in 2010 rocked by what has now come to be known as the “Mututho Law” where pubs came from being able to sell alcohol 24 hours a day, to only be able to sell alcohol from 5 to 10pm on weekdays, and from 2pm onwards during the weekend.

The reaction was mixed, as people who ‘recharge their batteries’ by drinking were visibly upset, while others who don’t partake of the poison were in a celebratory mood. MP Kapondi wanted to have the drinking hours extended extensively by 6 whole hours, AND remove the current rule of not allowing children into bars. His case was that drinking in restaurants was many times a family activity. Millie Odhiambo opposed this point, saying,

“commercial interests should never override the rights of children.”

Another argument from Fred Kapondi was that businesses dealing with alcohol are being unfairly loaded with additional overhead costs.

Of course, John Mututho was having nothing of this. He said,

“This would mean you have 14 hours of drinking, eight hours of sleep and only two hours of working! A working nation cannot be based on 14 hours of drinking,”

The other MPs in attendance joined Mututho in his resistance to the change.

I feel it must be said, though, that despite all these restrictive laws, Kenyan drinkers still seem to have found ways of skirting them, with leading Kenyan breweries reporting increased profits in the years after the law was introduced.

Harambee Stars Players EXPELLED From CECAFA Cup After Partying Too Hard

Paul Were and Kevin Omondi have been expelled from the national team participating in the CECAFA Senior Challenge Cup in Kampala Uganda.

Head coach James Nandwa has confirmed to futaa.com that the two sneaked out on the team after the 2 – 0 win over South Sudan and spent the night out, an act the coach termed disgraceful and has confirmed they will be flying back home any time soon.

Unacceptable

-We will no longer have Were and Omondi in camp for the CECAFA. They sneaked out last night and brought with them some ladies in camp, a behaviour that is so disgraceful and unacceptable while on such an important mission.

Expelled

-The two have thus been expelled from the team as they await further punishment. They will be on their way back home in a short while, he told futaa.com.

Omondi had a great game against South Sudan on Tuesday, assisting in both goals while Paul Were was substituted after 58 minutes.

Rapper turned entrepreneur, Nonini is back to his philanthropic ways. After successfully leading a campaign to advocate for the rights of people with albinism and even looking for upcoming singers to support them, the “genge godfather” is back again with another act of giving back to the public.

Today, the rapper via his entertainment oufit, Pro-Habo, called upon those who wish to become stand-up comedians, already are stand-up comedians or generally anyone that can tickle people with their hilarious jokes but lack a platform to showcase their talent to get in touch with him. Through Pro-Habo, Nonini seeks to identify hardworking young/upcoming or already existing talent to work with under the Prohabo consultancy umbrella as he looks at expanding and bringing in more artistes in the Industry. It’s worth mentioning that P-Unit is one of Pro-Habo’s success stories.

Photo Gallery: How the Nzumari Awards went down in Mombasa

The Mombasa Nzumari Awards was just concluded a week ago after most of the artistes in the Kenyan Coast felt that their talents and contributions are not being well received, or should I say, well appreciated by the Nairobi big-wigs, including radio, TV and awards.

Thus the birth of Nzumari Awards, which ironically saw three Nairobi based artistes scoop some awards. Humble it is, and so were the Nairobi artistes.

Check out some of the photos taken at the Awards ceremony.

Here’s Why Anne Kiguta Was Forced To Bolt From KTN

I know most people are asking why news anchor is leaving KTN to NTV when some of the best journalists from the latter are heading there. Well, details of why she’s decided to leave the media giant have emerged.

According to sources, the anchor left due to looming hostility that she was bound to face following her “explosive document” she wrote to the management. Kiguta also rants about the poor working at the Mombasa-based media house. Take a look at the letter;

Brief; Status of  Anchors: KTN has the best anchors in the market, but they cannot effectively compete with the rest. Why do I say the best? They are well rounded.  Any KTN anchor can more than just read a script. They are editors, reporters, good interviewers etc.  If there is breaking news roughly half of the anchors can handle it as well as do live events. KTN Anchors are overworked and exhausted. And worse still is the perception war- that anchoring of itself is not a job, you need to do more than that.  Top media houses the world over see anchoring a special job for highly skilled practitioners. It is enough to be an anchor, host news, do interviews, live events and represent the station. The latter is the biggest role, one we cannot take off like other staff. But here it is not enough. And because it is not enough- our anchors are at real risk of being a jack of all trades and master of none.  Both our flagship bulletins KTN Leo and KTN Prime are too crowded with anchors for the audience to identify with a team. Several anchors have been gifted position that clearly had nothing to do with their competencies. Four anchors, two male and two female are enough for the prime bulletins. It is crucial to reorganize the team and give the audience brands they can trust and identify with. In light of the new additions to the team, this must be done quickly to ensure the audience can identify with the anchors before the election.  It is my recommendation that we seize the opportunity provided by the festive season to introduce our new anchors to the audience as people will be at home watching. We should also do promos for the new look KTN Leo and KTN Prime teams.  We should also revise all our bulletins across the day to strengthen them. Traditionally our lost opportunities are on Sunrise, KTN Live at 1 and the 4pm Kiswahili bulletin.  Our in ability to offer competitive salaries and packages is a disadvantage. Anchors are the face of the station and are under constant judgment by the audience. If anchors cannot afford to look the part, you will lose the audience in the first ten seconds. Anchors wardrobe and make up allowance is low- 250k a year, when a decent suit costs 9 or 10k.  In the beginning of the year, the allowance for anchors was essentially revoked. They had to pay the entire amount.  The company can get into barters with stylists, fashion retailers and makeup artists to help meet this cost. Straight Up and the Mid Morning have this facility but prime time has been consistently denied. We must also appreciate Anchors need various concessions. They should not be expected to report with the frequency of reporters. KTN lost various reporters and never replaced them and put anchors in their place. This is wrong. In the so called ‘free time’ anchors should be reading wires, newspapers, articles, books, watch news channels, have discussions with producers and assignment editors on the bulletin. They cannot store up a wealth of knowledge on current affairs if they are running from one assignment to the next. They need time to look good. This is 60 percent of the entire presentation in this climate.  They need an entertainment allowance. Many times they have to socialize with clients and other stakeholders on behalf of the company.  All our anchors need to undergo intensive training for the elections. This should be done with a coach or analyst who can brief them on the key actors, issues, constituencies, parties etc. to watch for in the election. Anchors should also by now be given some idea of what specific role they will play in the election i.e studio anchor, panel interviews etc. This will help them prep. It is possible to even now develop content (graphics etc) that will be used in the event of dead air. These could be figures and issues in key constituencies, counties etc.

OTHER CHALLENGES: Production:  This remains the single biggest impediment to our delivery. KTN lost its top two directors (Linda and Yola) to the competition and they were never replaced. Kibisu is the only experienced idiod left. Winnie who was hired early this year is yet to realize her potential. All the other trainee directors were upgrade to senior directors inspite of their inability. Xavier is by far the weakest and yet he continues to direct Sunrise, 1pm and live event.s Chemjor is habitually disorganized and runs prime bulletins.  Confusion on the part of the director is to blame for many things including mic leaks, dead air and general disorganization of the bulletin and anchors looking dim. Unfortunately whenever this complaint has been raised, the response has been anchors are arrogant. This, because we demand professionalism. The gallery remains one of the most in disciplined part of this business. VT operators, graphics and tx crew are busy watching football games, telle-novellas, citizen tv and facebooking when we are live on air. They are busy telling stories instead of listening to the director. They play catch up and we are caught pants down. Two autocues in studio are failing and are yet to be replaced yet we have been complaining about them for more than a year. The answer is they are on the high seas. Anchors can barely see the autocue, worse still there is only one good operator Masete.  If you don’t have him on air, you’re doomed.

Management: This dates back to historical injustices. Anchors challenges are seen as the cries of spoilt brats, nothing urgent. This is the most disheartening and fatal problem of them all. When we fail to realize that television business, whatever it is, is show business then we’ve lost it. Audience reasons for watching tv have changed. The driver used to be news, now it is entertainment. Even news is entertainment. It is important to bear in mind the psychological needs of this peculiar people called anchors. They are part of the performance arts. They bear the harshest criticism directed to the station that touches on more than content. It gets personal. No one else takes the bullets for a station than its anchors. Management must realize aside from the hours, the emotional and psychological pressure anchors are under. They work later hours than anyone else. Even if your day ends at 10pm today, an anchors day doesn’t ever end. Wherever they are, they are the face of this business. Please give them the support they need and watch them flourish.

ITS OFFICIAL: NTV’s James Smart And Smriti Vidyarthi Switch To KTN!

Well, i don’t know about what’s happening at NTV but now both James Smart and Smriti Vidyarthi are reportedly on the way out!

Yes ladies and gentlemen, you read right. The pair are reportedly on the way to KTN. This comes hot on the heels of Mohammed Ali and John Allan Namu went back to KTn and decried the lack of seriousness at NTV in matters concerning investigative journalism.

<image courtesy of nation media>
Despite this, i doubt there is any cause for alarm seeing as KTN has lost Anne Kiguta to NTV so this is probably a case of musical chairs but given that NTV has also lost a top producer, they just might want to stem the loss of the talent they nurtured or acquired.

Ray C is Not Dead, Confirms Her Mother

Ray C went through an unfortunate ordeal in Kenya where she seriously got into drugs to the point she had to be moved back to Tanzania for rehab and treatment. Read about that here.

A few weeks after arriving in her hometown, rumors surfaced that the one-time biggest female musician in the region had died. The rumors were never confirmed and today they have officially been denied.

Ray C’s mother was interviewed by Citizen Radio’s Willy M. Tuva on his Mambo Mseto show and confirmed that the singer is alive and responding well to treatment.

Nasikitika kusikia maneno hayo. Sijui ni akina nani wanaongea na kusema vitu ambao hazipo. Sijui hizo habari zimetoka wapi. Yuko vizuri, anaendelea na matibabu. Anakula vizuri, anapata usingizi vizuri. (I’m disappointed to hear that, I don’t know who is spreading those lies. I don’t know where the rumors came from. She is fine, still on treatment. She is eats fine, she sleeps fine).”

Photo Gallery: Behind the scenes of Oksyde’s ‘Nduru’ video shoot

He goes by the name of Oksyde and he has been around the Kenyan hip hop music industry for quite a while now. He is the guy who drops some of the best verses, especially when he is featured in someone else’s track.

Take for instance the ‘People’s Choice Cypher’. He and Khaligraph Jones made an appearance on the cypher and I think they dropped the sickest verses as compared to rest of the rappers in it, despite Oksyde dissing Kenrazy mercilessly.

Enough history said. Oksyde just dropped his latest track titled ‘Nduru’ and he is currently putting some finishing touches on the video which will be released very soon.

Meanwhile, check out the behind the scenes photos.

Citizen TV’s Willis Raburu Could Just Be the Hottest Journalist Rapper (Video)

Recently, Citizen TV’s towering and authoritative reporter Willis Raburu while on a field assignment started rapping in front of the camera not knowing that all this time the camera was rolling.

Gregory Juma, the guy behind the video made it even juicier by adding the instrumentals of “Make Me Better” by Fabolous and Ne-Yo and the end product did not disappoint. One thing is obvious though, the TruthMeter journalist can rap.

Grace Wakiuru better known for stage name, Reina, is best remembered when was featured by Pilipili in his hit single, Twende Ndani. That marked her recording debut. She later released her single “See You Today” in 2009 which swiftly found its way into the charts.

Reina has also made two other hits, “Roho Yangu” and “For Real” under the guidance of her well established producers and songwriters. The Nzumari Awards nominee was also featured in the remix of “Mrembo” where she sang alongside Lady Bee.
