Yesterday, Citizen TV’s top Gospel crew Kubamba hosted students from Highway Secondary School in a special edition of the show they christened, ‘Kubamba Back To School Edition’.

Among the students was Daniel Owira, the Form Two boy who became a celeb overnight thanks to his narrative, “Otonglo Time”. And, here he is trying his hands on the wheels of steel.

Kameme Radio Presenter Accused Of Tribal Language Against Luos

Less than an hour ago, blogger “Kahawa Tungu” launched a very serious allegation towards Kameme FM presenter named Muthee Kiengei Watoria.

In a post titled: ‘This Kameme FM (owned by President Uhuru) Presenter Hates Luos with a Passion and Doesn’t Hide,’ it was alleged that the Kameme FM presenter had been replying to his Luo followers with tribal digs against their lack of circumsion rites. This was the evidence presented:

Now, I saw the post almost immediately it was published, and I was skeptical for two reasons:

1. I quickly scoured through Muthee Watoria’s posts done on April 30th, and came up with no post resembling the above mentioned jibe. I also looked for posts on April 30th that had 176 likes or 33 shares(or something siimilar) and there were none.

So maybe he deleted the evidence before I got to it, but then comes my second reason for skepticism:

2. Why would a Luo like a Kikuyu presenter’s Facebook page, let alone comment on it? If the status update did indeed exist, the presenter was most probably responding to a fellow Kikuyu, as they are 99.99% of the Kameme FM demographic. If it is a Kikuyu tossing an insult to another Kikuyu, it is very hard to accuse him of tribalism.

As an aside, please note that it is very easy to make fake Facebook status updates. There are many websites that can do this, including: http://www.fakebookstatus.com/

For now, that’s as much evidence that I could gather and post before the Internet Mob Justice League assembles, but we shall be looking for all sides of the story throughout the day. Keep it Ghafla! for more updates on this.

Necessary Noize Are Back With “Bring Back The Noize”

Necessary Noize used to be one of the biggest groups in Kenya during their time. I’ll never forget how when I was in high school, their album NNII came out and caused such a ruckus on the high school dance floors. It sold out repeatedly, and I felt so bad for missing out on the album, despite trying to buy it several times.

The group was initially composed of Wyre, Nazizi and Bamzigi. Bamzigi left the group first, then shortly after, Wyre and Naz split up as well to go solo. Of late, only Wyre has been releasing hits, but Bamzigi has been trying to bounce back after his drug addiction, and now it seems that Nazizi wants to get back on the musical circuit after becoming a wife and a mother in Lamu.

‘Bring Back The Noize’ is a club banger that predictably announces the return of Necessary Noize, and it’s done in a ragga/ hip hop hybrid style. One notable thing about this video is that Nazizi for once is all dolled-up unlike her usual tomboy demeanour. Watch it for yourself below:

Do You Want To Be Touched? Head On To Uhuru Gardens Tomorrow!

You are probably thinking that I have lost my mind! Read ahead, you shall understand what I’m talking about! Below is the event’s bio for Touch In The Park.

“TITP started on the 30th of June 2012 and has taken off since then. It was from the outset Nairobi’s most chilled out event and still is. We have no dress code, we dis each other, we laugh together, and we celebrate our lives together. We’ve had 5 gatherings at Uhuru Gardens this far and are planning another one on 4th May at the same place.

There is no strict schedule related to when we meet to Touch at the Park, we have what we call a Democratic Dictatorship. Members go on the Group page on facebook suggest convenient dates and we eventually settle on one and make it happen.

TITP is centered on Touch rugby. Most Kenyans have become inculcated to the rugby culture since our National 7’s team started doing well in the international circuit. The founder is also an old rugby; and several female attendees are into the sport. Given that touch rugby doesn’t involve actual tackles, we have been able to include both sexes in the game. Public demand eventually decided that other games like kati (oddly enough the reigning champion is male) rounder’s and football ‘ya post ndogo’ are included.

http://acelebrationofwomen.org/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/uhuru-gardens-3.jpg

Laughter. Camaraderie. Good cheer. Fun times. And on a side note, most people who attend TITP were strangers to each other at the outset, and now are bosom buddies and carry on interacting even beyond the Park, the good humor spills over into their work lives and young entrepreneurs have an opportunity to meet others in the struggle and draw strength and encouragement.

‘Dial-a-Drink’ has done drinks at every TITP since inception. Recent additions to the TITP family are ‘The Event Photographer’ and ‘the Unit’ who joined us at the last TITP and decided not to move on.

That said, what we’ve learned from TITP is that people are fundamentally happy, and they just need a forum to express it. So in the end, TITP is just a vessel through which we give people an opportunity to come out and chill and socialize and be friendly.”

So, so you want to be touched? Uhuru gardens tomorrow, 100 shillings only, bring your own bottle, from 1 pm to 7 pm!

You Voted This Camp Mulla Member The Most Likely To Succeed? He’s Responded With His First Single!

Just last week we conducted a poll on Ghafla where I asked you which Camp Mulla member you felt was the most likely to succeed aye? My choice of Kus Ma lost out but no long ting! Today the lad who actually won that poll has released his first single titled “Zone Out”.

And as usual he reached out to his long term collaborator Kus Ma for the production work and you cannot fault his decision! The quality is crisp and clear and one thing I have to say about these lads is that they have an eye for talent. They have reached out to Bev to do the hook for them and my goodness the lass has talent! her vocals are breathtaking!

But back to the track. The track features Taio Tripper representing his hood of Kileleshwa and talking about showing his appreciation for his mummy’s love! Check out the track and let us know what you think about it:

If It’s Not Hustlers And SufferersThen Just Who Reads Ghafla? Find The Truly Shocking Answer Here!

There seem to be alot of misconceptions about Ghafla’s demographic. Alot of people I’ve met have been astounded by the truth of the make up of the demographic Ghafla!Kenya serves.

Most people are under the assumption that Ghafla only appeals to high school children and the idle and uneducated. If you are one of these people, allow Uncle Chim Tuna to school you.

Ghafla!Kenya’s readership is a kaleidoscope of backgrounds; socio-economic and ethnic. But the core audience Ghafla!Kenya serves are people between the ages of 25-34. This demograph usually surfs Ghafla for an average of 8minutes and they do so from their work stations. Or to quote Alexa,

“Based on internet averages, ghafla.co.ke is visited more frequently by users who are in the age range 25-34, have no children, are graduate school educated and browse this site from work.”

ghafla.png

The second biggest demographic Ghafla!Kenya appeals to are those between the ages of 55-64 -I know, that was abit of a shocker for me aswell.

That means that while the loudest naysayers of our business model are between the ages of 18-24, they constitute a marginal readership. Speaking of silent majorities and cantankerous minorities…

Another interesting fact is that Ghafla is read more by women than men which is a shift from just 2 months ago. But what can I say, ladies are attracted to douchebags like me so it’s only natural that they would flock to my articles like moths to flame. I’m joking… Or am I?

DOUCHEBAG_CHIM.jpg

And what about the educational background of the biggest chunk of our demographic? They are Master degree holders. Yep, they are post grad students and graduands. This would make such an interesting research paper given that Ghafla!Kenya was started by someone who doesn’t even hold a bachelor degree.

From these interesting facts, we can deduce that Ghafla’s readership is well educated and has stable income: it’s what would be termed as Kenya’s middle class. Elementary my dear Watson!

And from the fact that the second biggest demographic is people between the ages of 55-64, we can deduce that entertainment industry heavyweights and potential investors are taking note of Ghafla!Kenya… What was that Mzazi Willy M. Tuva said? Oh yeah, If your story isn’t on Ghafla, you aren’t a celebrity yet!

And you can read about the corporate CEO’s who can’t get enough of Ghafla here.

Attention Aspiring Singers, Sauti Academy Auditions Are Currently Underway!

If you can carry a tune, but feel like there’s so much more you need to know, how about enrolling for Sauti Academy?

Sauti academy is a scion of Penya Africa which is responsible for churning out the likes of Elani, Sauti Sol and a myriad of other stars. There are currently holding auditions and I felt it was prudent that I remind you. Read below.

We are organizing new rounds of auditions on the 3rd and 4th of May from 9am. You don’t need to make an appointment; auditions will happen on a first come, first served basis during those two days. During auditions you’re expected to perform 1 or 2 songs (a-cappella or with an accompanist or with CD/flash disc backing track .wav or .mp3) & we’ll interview you about your motivation to join the program.

Sauti Academy Presents Beats And Pieces Tomorrow!

In the 1st round, there are two things that can happen;

-You can be invited to the 2nd round auditions (for which you will get an assignment to prepare at home!). The 2nd round will take place on Tuesday the 7th of May 2013.

OR

-You can be told “No, Sorry” and asked to work on improving your voice & performance and maybe come back another time.

The result of the second round can be either one of these three:

Welcome to Sauti Academy (classes start on the 11th of May at 9am)
Welcome to Raw Talent (our 3-month preparation class for talented singers who need a little extra time and basic skills before joining the Sauti Academy program. There are weekly group sessions on Thursdays and after the three months you should be ready for the full program!)

Muse Ke Screening Acclaimed Movie Tsotsi Free At The Nest Tonight!

I told you a few days ago about Muse Ke’s list of screenings for this month. Today kickstarts this, and the movie is none other than Gavin Hood ‘s ‘Tsotsi’. Doors open at 5:30pm and screening will start at 7:00pm.

Set amidst the sprawling Johannesburg township of Soweto – where survival is the primary objective – TSOTSI traces six days in the life of a ruthless young gang leader who ends up caring for a baby accidentally kidnapped during a car-jacking.

The Nest Screens Argo By Ben Affleck

TSOTSI is a gritty and moving portrait of an angry young man living in a state of extreme urban deprivation. His world pumps with the raw energy of “Kwaito music” – the modern beat of the ghetto that reflects his troubled state of mind.

Muse KE Releases May Movie Screenings!

The film is a psychological thriller in which the protagonist is compelled to confront his own brutal nature and face the consequences of his actions. It puts a human face on both the victims and the perpetrators of violent crime and is ultimately a story of hope and a triumph of love over rage. – Official Website.

Safaricom Gets Flack On Twitter For Misunderstood Text About Buni TV!

We at Ghafla know a thing or two about being berated for stories, when people have simply skimmed through. Or maybe it’s selective amnesia. Either way, people will not read everything, yet will come at you guns blazing over the most mundane of things!

Well today Safaricom went through the same for sending out a text to smartphone users. The text, was to urge people to watch Buni Tv’s new comedy Pastor Tim’s sunday sermon. Notice the word comedy. The text read, “Watch Pastor Tim’s Sunday Sermon, The Cursed Kenyan and other crazy episodes of the hilarious Buni TV Comedy Series. Simply go to www.buni.tv/comedy to enjoy”

Following XYZ's Success, Buni TV Has More In Store For You!

But no, people have to vent, rant and rave, externalize, be melodramatic! There were tweets going around saying that Safaricom should know better than to advertise church services. Yes, I kid you not. I have paraphrased.

Marie Lora Mungai CEO of Buni Tv tells me that Of course, the mysterious Pastor Tim is none other than actor Nick Troy, and his “Sunday Sermon” is just the name of a series of sketch comedy clips on Buni TV.

This is what Nick aka Pator Tim had to say Pastor Tim, “I deeply apologize to those who might have been offended by my message. I love the people of Kenya very much. Nita wafanyia mapenzi tele watu wa Kenya.”

Wow, it’s never that serious people. Read about Buni Tv’s new programs here.

Today, Colonel Mustafa Will Launch A Song He’s Been Working On For 4 Years

Today is all about Colonel Mustafa’s new song “Lenga Stress.”

This is a song that he has been working on for four years to date. It was done before he even recorded “Hey Baby,” but the timing was off for him, so he did not release “Lenga Stress.”

The song is all about how now is the time to be stress free. The song is finally being released today because of the mood in the country after we had a peaceful elections. I would say it is also not a mere coincidence that this song is coming out after Mustafa was the recipient of some unwanted attention with some gay fellows.

Tune in to Radio Citizen’s “Mambo Mseto” show today between 1.30 and 4 pm to hear the new club banger, as well as an in-depth interview of Colonel Mustafa, hosted by Mzazi Willy M. Tuva!

What Next Now That ‘The Circle’ Has Scraped Its Famous Wet T-Shirt Competition?

Last evening, Mista Majani told you how sad he was because the organizers of ‘the Circle’ decided to scrap the famous wet tee competition this weekend, and am a certain a lot more #TeamMafisi guys are yet to digest the “sad” news.

However, there should not be no cause for alarm because there three new segments that will be equally fun. Here is a quick brief of the other activities.

 1. Moment of Truth – The circle will have a polygraph machine (lie detector) and will put those who volunteer through a challenge with some of the most sensitive and personal questions. Winners (answers all questions without fail) will walk away with prizes. Come watch this fun as celebrities participate.
 2. May Babies – a 25KG cake to celebrate birthday for all the May born persons. Come celebrate the surprise birthdays in style.
 3. A Game of Golf – The circle will be the only event where you can learn the game of Golf – even if just for the swag.

You can’t afford to miss this!!!

Nigerian Blog Tarnishing Size 8’s Reputation

Once again another Nigerian blog is on the spot for reporting maliciously about a Kenyan musician. The very first time was when one blog purported that a certain female Kenyan singer (who they did not name by the way), allowed her fans to grab her private parts as she performed on stage, allegations which were not only a fabrication but also very misinforming.

Yesterday again, yet another blog, Naija Picks, ran a story with a past photo of Size 8 dancing with a male fan on stage and went in on her accusing her of being a hypocrite because she is saved (which is true) but still engages in suggestive dances in night clubs! First of all, we all know that Size 8 has not performed at any event (let alone Gospel gigs) since she got saved. If anything, she is supposed to perform tonight for the very first time since she got saved at the System Rave.sarcasm.jpg

Secondly, the blog even has the audacity to quote Ghafla! saying that we published the story and claimed that Size 8 later had unprotected sexual intercourse with the male fan in public!!! My response to that? WOW!!!

Here’s the story as carried by the blog;

My advice to the blog; do some researches before you publish a story…

Kiss 100’s Adelle Onyango Hooks Up The Longombas With A New Girl!

I pleaded with you a while back, to send your demos to Adelle Onyango of Kiss Fm’s Mid Morning show if you wanted to sing with the Longombas. Did you?

This boy rise to stardom is so fast and inevitable. It all started with a narration at State House, Mombasa that left the President tickled landing Daniel Owira a tour of the Nairobi State House and had his school fees paid, first by Jaguar, then President Uhuru (read about that HERE and HERE respectively).

Top Reggae Entertainer Deejay Kalonje To Thrill Fans In Doha Tonight!

There’s no denying that Deejay Kalonje is one of the top deejays in Kenya, his name is mentioned in the same breath with the rest.

That perhaps explains why he’s a resident deejay at Media Stream’s One FM and 91.5 Hits. This evening, he shall be in Doha Qatar, deftly applying his fingers on the decks for an event there. The venue is Grand Regal Hotel, so if you are in the vicinity, or happen to be globe-trotting randomly, this is the place to be at! He promises to enthral you for hours on end, with non stop music and tunes that tug at your heart strings. You however, have to be over 21 to gain entry, sorry kiddos.

This event is organized by StarDome entertainment.

This by the way, is not the only Kenyan event that has taken place in Qatar. Another deejay recently held the first gospel event there, read about that here.

StarTimes Wins Bid for TopTV

Chinese consortium StarTimes has won the bid for pay television service Top TV after shareholders and creditors voted on the matter in Sandton on Tuesday.

TopTV was launched by On Digital Media in May 2010 as a cheaper rival to DStv but has struggled to attract the 500,000 subscribers required to break even. As such, it is desperate to secure a financial backer after owner On Digital Media (ODM) entered business rescue proceedings last October.

top_tv.jpg

TopTV’s business rescue practitioner Peter van den Steen said TopTV’s content providers, fearing they would not get paid, indicated they could pull content if the pay television service did not find a buyer on Tuesday.

Kenyan pay TV operator Wananchi Group had also submitted an unsolicited offer on Monday.

Hip-Hop Rapper K-Nel Reveals How His 1st White Girlfriend’s Mum Wore Just a Thong During Family Breakfast

You all know K-Nel, yeah? For those who don’t, for some reason, K-Nel is the guy who was embroiled in some epic beef with K-South’s Abbas sometime last year that even made Abbas contemplate on pressing charges against K-Nel.

K-Nel also owns a clothing line under the name Anglohili Collection under which he recently unveiled his latest line of kicks. Above all, he is a Kenyan hip-hop artist based in Germany with several music projects under his name.

Last night though away from his music and other side hustles, K-Nel opened up about the culture shock that hit him when he first landed in Europe. Here’s his rather funny story;

The Standard Apologizes To TNA Chairman Johnson Sakaja For Misquoting Him

Standard Group on Wednesday, erroneously quoted the TNA National Chairman and nominated MP Johnson Sakaja in a story where legislators are pushing for KSh7 million to purchase luxury cars. This irked the TNA big shot who confronted the writer on Twitter before writing to the Standard Group demanding for an apology.

Arguing that he is not the kind of person to issue such sentiments, Sakaja tweeted;
@SakajaJohnson ; yani, that doesn’t even remotely sound like me. I would not make such a high handed statement.

Here’s the official complaint letter;

My attention has been drawn to a story in the Standard 1.5.2013. where I have been wrongly quoted by one Geoffrey Mosoku weighing in on the 7Million Shilling grant for vehicles as demanded by Members of Parliament.

I would like to state categorically that I have not made such a comment to the said journalist. It is not in my character to speak in such a high handed manner and I would not express myself in such a condescending tone.

I strongly believe in servant leadership and that is the kind of leadership I have pursued and portrayed both as the Chairman of The National Alliance and as a Member of Parliament. I am on record even in my maiden speech urging my colleagues in the house to remember that Leadership comes from God and is an exercise of stewardship over his people and resources. The positions we hold are held in trust for the people and are meant to serve the people, not ourselves.

I demand a retraction and apology on the said story.

Hon. Sakaja Johnson. M.P.
National Chairman – TNA.

In yesterday’s copy of The Standard, 5th May 2013, the daily acknowledges that they erroneously quoted Sakaja as one of lawmakers pressing for Sh7 million grant.

“We apologise to Mr Sakaja for the erroneous impression.” The daily read.

President Uhuru Vows To Protect Media Freedom

The Media plays a central role in the society and that’s why any country, world over, with a sane democracy has always strived to protect media freedom. And that’s what President Uhuru Kenyatta has promised to uphold.

Speaking when he officially opened the Media Council of Kenya Regional Journalists’ Convention at the Kenyatta International Conference Centre (KICC), which coincided with the World Press Freedom Day yesterday, the head of State said that the Jubilee government will implement policies, programs and initiatives that promote freedom of the media to ensure that it discharges its mandate effectively.

“My government will fight any attempts to gag the media or any other action that will cripple its operations,” the President said.

He noted that the government will fast track four Bills geared towards entrenching media freedom in the country so that they are debated and enacted by Parliament within the timelines set by the Constitution.

As a country and an emerging democracy in Africa, President Kenyatta said Kenya will be at the forefront in fighting any form of gagging the media, harassing of journalists, constraining media space and violation of media freedom that are fundamental to good governance.

He, however, urged media to uphold the highest standards of professionalism as they discharge their duties.

“We expect the media to remain free, fair and objective,” Mr. Kenyatta said.

“The sense of responsibility in the media must expand to social media and other emerging forms of media,” he said.

‘The Circle’ Scraps It’s Famous Wet T-Shirt Competition

Tis a sad day for me after hearing this news.

‘The Circle,’ a VIP event where celebs looked forward to letting loose, is now scrapping its marquee segment: the wet t-shirt competition.

This competition is what had all the tongues wagging in the social media fraternity. The video which we posted of the event are amongst our most watched:

{youtube}a9RLbx_Gg-s{/youtube}

We also had a couple of photos where socialite Pendo had taken part in the first wet t-shirt competition. That story got over 10,000 views, and when the 2nd edition of the circle was announced, people came extra early in the AM to get an unobstructed view of that wet t-shirt competition.

I’ll admit, I was part of the audience for the 2nd wet t-shirt competition, and I noticed that the whole thing, while enjoyable for me, was kind of demeaning to the lasses on display. People were giggling and laughing in their faces as the ladies gyrated their water-drenched hips. They must have felt like crap at that moment. Perhaps Bernsoft, the organiser of the event, felt some empathy for the women who were being objectified. Or maybe he just didn’t find chicks who were game this time around? Hmmm…

DJ Joe Mfalme Living Lavish

DJ Joe will be spinning on the decks this Saturday at the Lavish Lounge, Moi Avenue.

In case you didn’t know, Lavish Lounge is the place formerly known as Club Heartz. It has a red and white theme going to it, but at night, it is illuminated under neon lights that give it a psychedelic vibe.

On the 4th of May, it’s going down, in live and living colour, as DJ Joe comes down to the Lounge for the second time. He was also at the launch of the Lavish Lounge, and Ghafla! was there to take photos of the spectacle. It was a tight event, and we fully expect them to bring the house down this time as well.

Be there, or be square!(poster with details attached. Click it to enlarge)

For all the drunkards, here is a photo with their beer prices:
