Celebrities stepped Out In This Star Studded Edition Of The Circle! (PHOTO GALLERY)

The Circle went down this past Saturday at Arboretum and boy did it ever! From what Baba Ghafla and Vincent told me, it was not only full, it was a star studded affair with the who is who in Kenya’s entertainment scene out to have some fun and soak up some sun.

From Shaffie Weru to Kanja to octo to Taio, Kus Ma and Mykie Tuchi to Baba Ghafla in his best duds! Check out the photo gallery below of the fun that was had:

What?! No Wet T-Shirt contest? Find out why here!

Celebrity Look Alikes: Taio Tripper (Camp Mulla) And Burna Boy (Nigeria)!

I have always said that I can see a resemblance irrespective of how slight and I can finally prove it with Taio’s new look. For the Kenyans who don’t know Burna Boy, he is the hottest thing out of Naija right now so act like you know!

He is the talent behind this jam I love so much:

And while their styles of music are different, they bear an uncanny resemblance. Taio looks like a younger Burna Boy except that I do believe that Burna is younger. But you be the judge:

Octopizzo Set To Launch His Own Brand Of Underwear! PHOTOS!

So at The circle, Baba Ghafla and our photographer caught up with Octopizzo, namba nane’s finest and they got the talking. And in their lip running, they uncovered a gem of information:

Octopizzo is set to release boxers for his clothing line. They will be known as “Let’s Do It Boxers” Vincent the photographer was excited as he relayed this information to me and when he told me he had photos, there were some tense moments at the office as everyone wondered whether he’d asked Octo to take his pair off so he could photograph them (Octo was wearing the “prototype”).

Check out this picture of the new boxers:

Groove Awards Categories Illuminated

Here’s the continuation;

DIVISION V
Gospel Radio Show of the Year: There is just that one regular radio show which is so wow that it always keeps us coming back every time it runs. Be it the presenter, the music, the show format, the presentation or a combination of any or all of these qualities, we stay tuned to the very end!

Gospel TV Show of the Year
Putting a music video to run after another is pretty easy. How they do it is the trick, and this is what they use to wow us. If it’s not how they mix the songs, it’s how they arrange the music, how the theme it, etc, regardless of the TV station.

Radio Presenter of the Year
Talent is God given, and there are those radio presenters who sound more like they were born with it rather than grew into it later in life. Whatever stations they are on, we are sure and we know and experience a great time listening to them. They talk to us like we are their best friends!

DJ of the Year
There is just something amazing and extra about a talented DJ. He knows what to play, when to play it and reads the mood of the crowd well, and we dance without hurting our feet or missing a step when he mixes. The flow is well done and consistent, and he is a brand name that attracts attention and numbers when included in an entertainment line-up.

DIVISION VI
While we are running this from the Capital City, we still do get to hear great music and artistes or artiste groups from all over Kenya, who are great in their own rights. Whether their music is in one dominant tribe or another from a particular area or the artiste / group resides in that area, respect is due regardless! You may not have heard of this song in Kenya, but the people in that region could almost swear by it…

Pwani Song of the Year

Rift Valley Song of the Year

Western Song of the Year

Eastern Song of the Year

Nyanza Song of the Year

Central Song of the Year

DIVISION VII
Gospel Music has and will always cross international borders and as we move into more Eastern Africa co-operation, this particular category recognizes the artist or group who is a native of any of the Eastern Africa countries and more importantly, is considered successful by the Kenyan audience, including Kenyan artistes / groups in the Diaspora.

This is the category that lets us know who the big dawgs are in those countries, and who we need to be competing with in Kenya… The categories we are looking at in this division this year are;

Uganda Artiste of the Year

Rwanda Artiste of the Year

Tanzania Artiste of the Year

Burundi Artiste of the Year

Southern Sudan Artiste of the Year

Diaspora Artiste or Group of the Year

How Well Do You Understand The Groove Awards Categories?

The big day is finally here guys! This year’s Groove Awards nominees will be unveiled tonight at an invite-only red carpet event at the National Museum. All the big names in Gospel are expected to attend the event with the hope of getting nominated in a couple of award categories.

Speaking of the categories, the organizers, Mo Sound Entertainment and Safaricom have prestigious accolades for the winners in the several categories. But How well do you know these categories? Today, let’s illuminate all the categories;

DIVISION I
Male Artiste of the Year: This is the KING of Kenyan Gospel. He is the face of Kenyan Gospel Music, and he is who you would name to represent Kenya on the world scene. He roars in the population, like the Lion King! He is the total package – the physical and spiritual embodiment of Gospel Music! He has the ability to command respect on song, radio, TV and stage that sets him apart from his peers. He creates memorable songs that personify the essence of Gospel Music.

Female Artiste of the Year: She is the Queen, the Lioness, the real ruler of the Kenyan Gospel Kingdom (as the Lion is just ceremonial…). She keeps it together and can be considered the new Mother of Kenyan Gospel Music… She is the epitome of a female Gospel artiste in Kenya. Like her male counterpart, she is the total package – the physical and spiritual embodiment of Gospel Music! She has the ability to command respect on song, radio, TV and stage that sets them apart from their peers. She creates memorable songs that personify the essence of Gospel Music.

Group of the Year: A collective number of people coming together to achieve a common goal is what a group could be described as. But it takes a special set of persons to blend so well and deliver a message to us through song, and that is what we wish to encourage with the Group of the Year award.

New Artiste of the Year: The New Artiste of the Year recognizes those artists who shot through the surface of a densely populated industry and made waves. A solid debut, not just a hit single, denotes those worthy of this honor.

DIVISION II
Song of the Year: This is the big one! This is it! Whether it’s from an established artiste or new artiste or group, this song will be considered a timeless classic! This song made it big in all spheres; rural, urban, radio / TV and the streets!

Worship Song of the Year: This song makes you wanna join that particular choir / congregation! It has a soulful feel and the effect is an enriching spiritual feeling bigger than the Song of the Year. This is that song that, simply put, listening to it and singing along loudly is almost an excuse not to go to church!

Ragga / Reggae Song of the Year: Considering the mass market and the youth in Kenya are big on ragga and reggae, this category seeks to highlight those artistes or groups who have recognized this and used the influence of reggae and / or raga to pass on their message through Gospel Music.

Hip-Hop Song of the Year: Hip-Hop is big worldwide, and in Kenya it is popular with the middle to upper class listeners. We pay respects to those who have infused their message with this style while still staying relevant and true to their message

DIVISION III
Audio Producer of the Year: You can have a great song but it is nothing without the instrumentation that goes with it, gives it shape, gives it legs, gives it purpose. The Audio Producer of the year is recognized for their identifiable style, unmatched skill and reoccurring presence throughout the year, while having their own identity separate from the artistes they’ve worked with.

Video Producer of the Year: That ‘magician’ who gives a song a 3D feel by creating an visual message or story board to go with a particular song is who we are looking for. The song may not be as big but the video is awesome!

Song Writer of the Year: Writing is easy. Everyone can write. But that song that talks to you directly, deep down in the soul, and you’d listen to it without the music accompanying it is what Song Writer of the Year is about!

Video of the Year: Teachers in training are told that if the students do not understand what you are teaching by writing it on the board, use different color chalk. And if they still do not understand, draw a diagram. The Video of the Year is simply a video that represents the story and / or theme of a song while painting a provocative picture that is instantly memorable.

The rest of the categories are clarified HERE.

New Twist In Radio Personality’s Joshua Sang’s I.C.C Case!

I can’t quite figure out whether this is a blessing or a curse or an amalgam of the two. Could just be the two fraudsters rolled into one like an eggroll -blessing and curse. But enough of the poetry: the International Criminal Court has postponed the trial Radio presenter Joshua Sang that was set to begin on May 28.

Trial Chamber V however conveyed a public status conference on 14 May 2013.

The court said that a new date for the trial’s opening will be scheduled after hearing the parties and participants’ observations during the status conference.

During the public status conference on 14 May 2013, the parties and participants will present their observations on the Prosecutor’s request to add five witnesses to the list of witnesses and the Defence’s request to vacate the trial date.

“The Chamber will also hold non-public ex parte status conferences with the Prosecution on 7 May 2013 and with the Defence on 14 May 2013, to discuss these issues and other procedural matters,” read a statement signed by the trial’s Presiding Judge Kuniko Ozaki.

Ruto’s defence had initially filed a request to Vacate the Trial Commencement Date, in which it requested that the trial date of 28 May 2013 be vacated in order to allow the Defence adequate time to prepare its case.

I just wonder whether he’ll be in a fix given that he endorsed Raila Odinga for presidency and his co-accussed William Rutoi is now the deputy president! Read about that here.

Open Letter to Sky News for Referring To President Uhuru as ‘Criminal’

Sky News recently ran an article tagging the Kenyan head of State a ‘criminal’ in reference to the charges he’s facing at the International Criminal Court (ICC). The story received a lot of backlash from the Government with the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Information and Communication responding to Sky.

Europe-based Kenyan hip-hop rapper, K-Nel has also voiced his sentiments about the piece terming it “stupid”. Here’s K-Nel letter;

I came across this article published by SKY News on Friday 03 May 2013 and trust me, I could hear the blood pumping through my veins. I can’t describe my anger in words. SKY News, you know my face. Yes, K-Nel the anchor of Aljazeera TV Surprising Europe documentary. You saw my face many times as you aired the documentary on your TV channel 2011 and 2012 respectively. I only have one question; what was going on in your sane minds when you published the article below? I won’t bite my tongue by questioning you “are you out of your minds by publishing such an article?”. Someone from your department needs to approach me with an appropriate explanation!! This is irresponsible “journalism” in my opinion although I respect the fact that journalists exercise their freedom of speech. Let me tell you that Kenyans are optimistic about the future of this country. During the presidential elections, the Western Media continuously reminded us of the bloody PEV in 2007. We even had channels like CNN (just saying) perpetrating false propaganda that Kenyans were preparing for war and had set up guerilla training facilities at Rift Valley. Too bad the “actors” hired didn’t do their job right. But Kenyans regardless of who they supported stood up together as one nation and I don’t know whether you know a vocabulary called “Prayers” (Oxford dictionary might help you), but that’s exactly what we did. We prayed for peace to prevail in our country and the Lord almighty heard our prayers. Publishing such a nonsense article is childish, inappropriate and misleading. I hereby need an appropriate explanation as to why the article was published as such and I will deliver the message.

Eric Wainaina’s Music To Be Distributed in Nigeria

Eric Wainaina recently got signed to Mtech adding him to the roster along with  big Kenyan and Nigerian artists.

Eric Wainaina’s music will now be available on Safaricom’s  Skiza Tunes and other mobile platforms across Africa thanks to a deal signed with Mobile Value added services and content provider  MTECH East Africa.

This is the first time Afro fusion music becomes available for download as a CBRT  (Caller Ringback Tone) in Kenya.  It is also the first time Eric Wainaina has partnered with a content provider to have his music distributed via mobile networks and MTECH’s online distribution platform simukreki.com.

The deal will see Africa’s ace video director/producer Clarence Peters shoot Eric Wainaina’s videos for songs in his latest album “Love and Protest”.  According Mtech’s  Head of Content and Music Shiro Mwendwa   “Afro Fusion music has come of age in the continent and it is time the talents emanating from this genre get showcased on a wider scale”

“This will also be a great opportunity for Kenyans wherever they are to access Eric’s Music which we will soon make available across mobile networks allover Africa” she adds.

This means Eric’s music will now be available for mobile and online downloads in other African countries such as Uganda, Tanzania, Zambia and Nigeria where MTECH operates. The “Nchi Ya Kitu Kidogo” singer joins other industry heavyweights from Kenya such as P Unit, Kidum , Wyre  and Jimmy Gait who are signed to MTECH East Africa.  In Africa he joins Nigeria’s  P Square , Mr Flavour , 2 Face Idibia, Bracket , Tiwa Savage and Naeto C whose music is also distributed by MTECH.

Ghafla! Exclusive: Jaguar’s New Video Is Out!

It’s probably the most anticipated video this year thanks to the much hype it has generated during its shoot where a Bentley and a plane were involved.

Am talking about Jaguar’s fresh video for his latest single that just dropped a few minutes ago. Without further ado, ladies and gentlemen, I give you “Kipepeo” the video;

{youtube}85YXCuSgbt0{/youtube}

You remember how much controversy the car and the plane brought about, yeah? Here’s Jaguar’s response.

Sara Mitaru ‘Breaks Off Engagement’ With Mugambi Nthiga!

Relax, you are probably wondering what on earth I’m talking about! Yes yes, Sara Mitaru is married so NO there is no clandestine affair going on.

That is the plot of her new video you said, featuring Bien-Aime Barasa of Sauti Sol. The man who plays the leading role in the song is however Mugambi Nthiga, you know him from Nairobi Half Life.

The video is very well done, showing Sara Mitaru all decked out about to go for a date of sorts. But as the story unfolds, she undresses, and leaves! How sad. Meanwhile Mugambi is shown in a room holding a rose stem, noext to a bed with rose petals strewn on the cover. It soon dawns on him that Sara is gone for good. The story is highlighted by illustrations which by the way are pretty awesome. See the video below. The song was written and produced by Blackman. Speaking of Blackman, he recently had Wambura Mitaru over for a session, listen to that girl belt out like it ain’t no thang here.

The video is directed by Josh Kisamwa with illustrations by Norse.

Watch Mimmo’s New Video Rollercoaster!

Mimmo I believe is one of the freshest talents to come out of Kenya in recent times! This songstress has the kinda voice that would put snake charmers to shame!

Recently, she collaborated with STL and Collo for Floss na wewe, and that song has become a staple on our airwaves. Well girl has been busy, with a voice like even I would lock you up in the studio.

She has released a new song called rollercoaster. From the title, you can tell that she is ‘lamenting’ about their love not being a run of the mill love story where flowers fall from the sunset sky. Well, who has that kinda love anyway!

http://www.newyorknewyork.com/images/attractions/the-roller-coaster-large.jpg

See it below, this is a certified hit! The song features Chicku, is produced by Ulopa Ngoma. The video is directed by Kevin provoke, who also produced Iruga for Man Njoro and Kawira. Read about that here.

Changes: Where The Party Was At This Past Thursday!

Changes is always the scene of some of the wickedest parties in Nairobi and the past Thursday was no different. the crowd took some time to start trickling in to be honest but when they finally arrived, the party kicked like a dying mule!

Na boko Haram tings! It was so explosive that I had to take a bow at around 3 am for fear of getting caught in any blowback! But enough of the lame puns and metaphors! On to the pictorial display of how sick this party was!

Is I Am Free By Majic Mike Feat. Kris Eh Baba The Next Huge Gospel Groove?

What determines a hit song? I asked Radio powerhouse Caroline Mutoko that question last year at Kenya Music Week. Her interesting reply? “If the first five seconds of a song don’t enthral me, I’m binning it!”

http://oabi.files.wordpress.com/2012/09/i_am_free2007-766522.jpg

I think I am free will be the next big gospel anthem. Caroline’s the expert so i figured I might as well use that approach when judging popular music. I fancy myself as something of a music ‘aficionado’ thus so I’m patient, I’ll listen to a song several times to see if it will grow on me. I’ll listen to the melody, the harmonies, the adlibs, the progressions, I’ll listen to everything!

This one, five seconds and I was sold out! The song is by Majic Mike of Red Republic and it features Kris Eh Babah and Christine on vocals. The chorus is catchy! Catchy hook, catchy beat, awesome people featured, what do you expect?

Hear it below however and judge for yourself, may be my opinion is claptrap!

Jaguar Addresses The Haters: The Car And Plane Are…

Jaguar and Ghafla have one thing in common: haters who are too scared to step to the light of day to address us. The type who act like moles; scared of the light. but while Uncle Chim Tuna was angry in the morning, now in the afternoon, I wish to embrace all of you. Let Uncle Chim Tuna teach all you haters a thing or two about appreciation.

Jaguar recently released pictures of his car and Cessna plane and the internets went wild with naysayers running to twitter to talk all types of smack. They went on to rubbish Ghafla for the report that the plane was his.

I wanted to release the troll hammer aptly dubbed “rungu” on every last one of the haters but Bab Ghafla told me not to step off the throne to deal with those that know not the meaning of noble. Beat them with facts said he.

So I reached out to jaguar who said that the only things he doesn’t own on the set of his video shoot was the airport! Jay Z tings! Read about all his other cars here.

Yeah, the cessna cost him a paltry 18million Kenya shillings, the Bentley? I shan’t divulge. and all this is from the horse’s mouth so for heaven’s sake, get off that hating tip and do something with your lives!

And if you think all these toys are just vanity, if you think Jaguar is a prideful braggart, you are sorely mistaken! He was recently on a charity mission to St. Catherine’s Children’s Home Kibera with Grand Pa Records and he rode in a matatu!

Otonglo Boy Set To Make His TV Acting Debut On Lies That Bind

I doubt that ‘Otonglo Boy’ ever dreamt that his moment on the stage would ever translate to all the blessings he has now begun to enjoy. I doubt he had ever in his wildest dreams even thought he’d get the chance to meet the president of the Republic of Kenya. But all that has come to pass and there is still more in store for the lad.

Just when I thought his 15minutes of glory were winding down, they just got a lifeline. But more on that shortly…

Daniel Owira’s been to the State House and back, seen the President; an honour which very few of us can boast of, and it seems now the corporate sector and celebrities alike are clamouring for a slice of the humour he exudes so effortlessly. Either Kenyans have this insatiable thirst for the curiously new, or 15 seconds truly are precious and unexpected.

Young Owira received an estimated Kshs. 200,000 for appearing on a Naivas Supermarkets ad recently, and it appears he’ll be making a television debut soon enough. Rumour has it that there’s a role in Citizen TV’s Inspector Mwala thats set to be filled by him, though it’s not clear whether this will be a recurrent one or a guest appearance.

What’s clear however, is the fact that he’s in negotiations with the producers of KTN’s ‘Lies that Bind’ and should be visiting Spielworks Studios sometime today to iron things out. Looks like we’ll be seeing more, and more, of ‘Otonglo’.

Here’s the preview to ‘Lies that Bind’ which airs on KTN:

The Amazing Michel Ongaro To Grace Tree-House This Thursday!

People often overcome insurmountable obstacles to become roaring successes, but people tend to overlook those feats.

Meet Michel Ongaro, a singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and music coach, active in the music scene since 2002. Michel is not only blind, but also a cancer survivor with a humorous witty side that endears him to all and sundry. He is described as a multi-faceted artiste. Read the rest of his bio below, shared by Treehouse club.

Michel began making music at a tender age with makeshift percussion instruments that he’d make for himself. Having been rendered blind at the age of two, he learnt to overcome this challenge to emerge an artist that is refined in both skill and character.

His musical inspiration comes from artists such as Cesaria Evora, Djelimadi Tounkara, Salif Keita, Franco Makiadi, Diblo Dibala, Africando, Muungano choir, Lee Ritenour, Bin Crosby and many others.

Michel is a source of enlightenment and inspiration to many. With his positive energy and talent, he makes beautiful music that borrows largely from his rich African heritage and blends spectacularly with other music genres from other continents to create quite a charming blend.

Tree-house is on Museum hill, westlands road.

In The Forest’s Gerald Gets Slapped While Interviewing Janet Kirina!

Every week, In The Forest has a steamy episode and the Host, just keeps getting brazen when it comes to speaking his mind.

Janet_Kirina_3.jpg

So this week’s episode features singer/actress Janet Nariki, and oh Gerald went on and on about her breasts! Janet, maybe you should insure them seeing as Gerald might try something. How creepy!

janet_kirina_2.jpg

Oh Gerald obsessively asked about her ‘pair’, and even brought up the issue of her nvde pics. Alleged nvde pics. The stunning guest, was invited in the show after winning the “In the Forest” text competition of episode 3 with Nice Githinji. Who knew it would be her arch-nemisis who would win the contest. Karma karma karma! Of course Gerald tried to fan that rivalry flame to no avail. He however was slapped by someone else! A past guest, oh ni kama ndrama!

HISTORIA_LOGO.jpg

As usual, it’s directed by Alex Konstantaras, and the music by Dimitris Petalotis. See this past episode to understand why he was slapped!

After Railing At DJs For Poor Mixing, DJs Finally Respond Read This Hilarious Reply!

A couple of months ago, I was at oxygen ushering in the new year. The DJ then sucked. He missed the countdown and when I protested, he had the gall to ask me what he was meant to do, stop the music? Uhm…

Uhm… What do you think?

But do you have any ideas how much DJs have to deal with? D’you know what Kaytrixx, DJ Creme and DJ Joe Mfalme have to deal with whenever they spin? Well, DVJ Lee has responded. Read the hilarious response below:

Here Are The Lyrics To Kalekye’s New Club Banger!

Kalekye is a force to reckon with in this industry, from being a radio powerhouse to managing a deejay outfit.

She sang it live yesterday, see that here. Now according to Jeff, Kalekye is a multi-faceted queen! Apart from singing and radio deejaying, Kalekye is also an actress (yes! She has acted on Mali), a business woman (manages the great Republic Deejays fraternity consisting of deejays Dj Mista Dru, Dj Hypnotiq, DJ Andre, DJ Protégé and W-DJ). She also owns a salon, Black Butterfly. Esh!

Kiss 100’s Kalekye Sings Her New Single Live on TV (Video)

She added another feather in her cap by revealing a side of her we didn’t know, singer. And yes yes, you’ve heard the song, danced to it, but can you sing along word for word? Well, I found the youtube video with the lyrics, see it below, and cram the words. If you are an avid listener of her show, then you know pretty soon this club banger will be winning you two thousand bob. I should probably cram them too, may be that will be my radio debut. Oh wait, I’ve won money before! Oh well.

Laying Bare Singer Wahu

You all know her for being among the emergent generation of strong Kenyan women, who are rising up to take their place as leaders and role models of today’s society as a musician, business lady, wife and mother.

But behind all these lies “the human”, Wahu. Just what defines this songbird? Take a look;

#1 She had her first crush when she just 7 years old.

#2 After clearing High School, she wanted to go to a hair-dressing school, but her mum would hear none of it. (could the passion for hairdressing what led her to start a salon business?)

#3 She grew up with the idea of becoming an air hostess.

#4 She hates driving manual cars, especially uphill.

#5 She is a confessed shoe-holic; she finds it hard to walk past a good shoe dealer. In fact she owns racks of shoes at home.

#6 Although she is scared darkness, she has to act all brave so that her little girl, Tumiso, doesn’t freak out.

#7 Just like her husband, Nameless, she still gets stage-fright when getting on stage even after many years in showbiz.

#8 For her to fall asleep, she needs noise; so she the TV or Hi-Fi system is always on even late in the night.

#9 To care for her face, Wahu uses raw potatoes, tomatoes and cucumber; a treatment she trems as not only inexpensive but also very effective.

#10 She loves avocadoes in all her meals. She can eat them with anything from bread, beans, ugali to French fries.

Comedian Otoyo Enumerates The Guidelines For “Mpango Wa Kandos”

Are you in a clandestine affair with a married man and don’t know how to go about it? Sit back and relax, comedian Otoyo AKA Otos has got you covered. Take a look;

1 – Acknowledge your place in the relationship.

2 – You are his mpango wa kando because he is not happy at home. Please dont give him hell, he’s had enough of that at home.

3 – Don’t call or text him after 5pm. Tell him everything you want before 5pm, he’ll be @home after 5pm, he doesn’t have to switch off his phone or put it on silent mode because of you.

4 – You are not his family. Leave his family out of it.

My two cents: it’s never that serious, take it in with a pinch of salt.

Kiraitu Murungi Does Not Want Media Coverage

Oh okay! Didn’t see this coming;

K24 reports that Meru Senator Kairaitu Murungi has told the media to leave him alone to enable him concentrate on development projects in his county. He claimed when he was the Justice Minister, the media kept on antagonizing him at the expense of service delivery. “When I served as the Justice Minister, the media made capital from my activities to the extent that it almost became impossible to deliver services as required”, he said.

Speaking at Kinoru Stadium on Saturday during his home coming ceremony, he said upon being moved from the Justice docket to Energy, he asked the media to judge him by the number of electric poles he was able to supply to the rural areas.
“When I exited the Energy portfolio, Kenyans will remember me for widespread power connection”, he said.

He told the media to judge him by the number of water pipes he will have installed in the entire county, and the kilometres of road he will have constructed. The Senator added that he has already outlined a development road map for the county for the next five years if only the media could give him space to accomplish his goals.
