“Ghetto Superstar” Living in US Makes A Comeback With A Hot New Release!

The streets nicknamed him the “ghetto superstar” because he never hit the charts or radio but even the kids recognized him as he did his neighborhood rounds. “I have the most respect for the streets of Nairobi, Kenya because they made me what I am”, reckons Daddy V.

Daddy V’s first live show was at Lipps disco in Nairobi when he was just 13 years old. Soon after, he made Nairobi’s Florida 2000 club his home. He was a regular performer at the club’s talent shows popularly known as “Jam session”. This is where Nairobi’s underground artists converged to showcase their talent.

Florida 2000 Jam sessions produced artists such as Hardstone, Gidigidi Majimaji and Redsan who are big artists and pioneers in Kenyan music. In 1997, Daddy V won the coveted talent show, which gave him even more credence on the streets. However, because he could not afford studio time, he never recorded any of his music.

Daddy_V2.jpg

Daddy V continued performing as an underground artist until he moved to the United States. His style of music is a fusion of dancehall (ragga) and African rhythms. Daddy V released his breakthrough album Nare which won him and Awards at the Msanii awards and his song Nare was the soundtrack of the blockbuster movie Malooned under Kilimanjaro records label in Minneapolis USA .

And now, Daddy V has teamed up with Lovy Longomba in LA Cali to produce his first Hit in his new and upcoming album. The song is called Promise Me and is getting airplay and being received well in USA and Africa.

Menwhile, Daddy V is planning on a USA, Canada, Caribbean and Africa tour to launch his album.

Check Out Reverend Kathy Kiuna Opulent Mansion In Runda! (PHOTO GALLERY)

I think it’s time I re-thought my life’s trajectory! It might just be time for Uncle Chim Tuna to re-evaluate where his life is headed. I think i should make a bee line to the closest Theology school! And this will be my last article for Ghafla! Let me get to preaching!
Yes, I am rather shaken by the opulent lifestyle led by the Kiunas. Kathy Kiuna, the matriarch of the Reverend Kiuna household has a TV show on NTV and I doubt that is what has given rise to their fortunes.

Check out their opulent house situated in Kenya’s leafy links suburb of Runda: never mind that a few years ago, an acre in Runda was being sold at 200 million!

Shaffie Reveals the Number of Women He Loves

He’s one of Kenya’s showbiz ‘bad boys’ and is not about to regret that anytime soon. The radio host’s love life has also been in question especially after he parted way with his baby-mama and former Tatuu singer, Debbie Asila.

However, over the weekend, Shaffie set the record straight about the women in his life. Speaking on KTN’s Str8up show, the celebrated radio host and emcee confessed his love for three women.

“I love three women,” declared Shaffie.

This, after a member of the audience challenged the outspoken to tell the live audience how many girlfriends he’s presently dating. And Shaffie didn’t beat about the bush, he added,

“Three, there only three women in my life; my daughter, mother and my girlfriend.”

Shaffie’s love for his daughter, Milan, is so manifested that his biggest dream is to see her become a Tiger Woods in women’s golf.

The Main Reason Kenya’s Female Celebz Aren’t Taken Seriously!

Kenya’s female celebrities do not take themselves seriously. that is why they aren’t taken seriously. Actually, that is quite the blanket statement. Some do. Most don’t. Those that do, I can count on one hand.

And when I talk about taking themselves seriously, I’m taking about branding. so if you’re standing up in protest, take a seat! i don’t care if you have an morbidly obese sense of importance. Your brand is close to rubbish so you should sit down and learn a thing or two.

The two people I want to use as illustrations: Redsan and Nameless.

Redsan

Redsan has been on a hiatus of sorts. he had been taking the Kenyan entertainment scene by storm and was blazing every track he was on then he decided to take a hiatus. But when I heard that he had dropped a new, I knew it would be an awesome Dancehall offering. And he didn’t fail me.
Redsan is the guy that you know will deliver on a Dancehall track. That is his brand; he delivers.

Nameless

Nameless branded himself straight from the look to his music. Whenever you think of Nameless, the first thing you think of is his durag, sunglasses and kapuka. He successfully branded himself such that if you met him at the bank in a suit, you might not recognize him. If he flipped the script and decided to rap, you would think something horrible had happened and that is his way of dealing aye?

Kenyan female celebrities however do not seem to have mastered the art of branding. Avril flirted with the idea of being Kenya’s only bad girl but buckled quicker than I would if I tried lifting Madtraxx.
In a way, I find Kenyan female celebrities lazy. They are content with making peanuts! That’s why they do not make concerted efforts at branding then demanding the amount of money their brand commands.

How many Kenyan female celebrities take the time to tone their bodies? Sex appeal is a huge weapon in any female artist’s arsenal but they all let themselves go like some slip and slide! Mercy Myra still got it though!

But the rest? They look good for a year or two then fall off. Sad. When it comes to looks -strictly speaking matters branding- this is the most important ally a female celebrity has. That is why women who have no business singing can sing and we will not notice their horrible voice. But the plain Jane had better have an awesome voice! Just ask Adelle or Amy Winehouse.

After the looks, attitude is a close second. A woman who knows how to straddle the fine line between being a femme fatale and a *female canine* will have men and boys asking for more. That’s the difference between Rihanna and Miley Cyrus.

The thing about branding is that in terms of earning, it allows me to know which demograph you appeal to so I can know how much to pay you and you, how much to demand. what demograph does say Avril appeal to? Or Size 8?

Branding is an investment ladies. Ask yourself what pops into everyone’s mind when they think about you. If nothing does, you have your answer as to why you earn peanuts compared to your male colleagues!

‘I Do Fries’ Says Mirfat Musa

Earlier this year top-rated dating TV Show Tujuane inadvertently discovered a Kenyan celebrity,a bewitching damsel by the name Susan Mirfat.

We soon got over her beauty after she started putting down a young hustler from Kasarani acting all polished and what not.She said her hobbies included fencing and as a tennis fan she liked watching Australian Opening. One of the things that stood out was her saying that she does not do fries as she is no chips funga.

Well during a recent interview at KTN’s Tujuane the young lass revealed that she actually eats fries and fencing was something that she was a stranger to fencing as opposed to what she had said in the show. This begs the question as to whether the show was staged as she had alleged earlier.

Amani Is An Angry Lady!Find Out Why

The discovery of an aquifer(an underground layer of water-bearing permeable rock) in drought stricken and impoverished area Turkana came as a relief to the residents of the county and Kenya at large.

The aquifer was drilled and it was confirmed that Turkana would have access to clean water that could provide a constant supply of water for over 7 decades if properly managed. Not everyone was excited about this discovery and it was met with a lot of negative thick-headed attention from the west.

Here are some of the comments:

Kenyans should stop having babies, perhaps then there wouldn’t be too many people that need the water”

Well, they ARE mostly muslim there so certainly there will be killing over this…

Overlords will soon take it over and nothing will change.

Proper management in Kenya? You got to be kidding.

Nakumatt Joins East Africa’s Biggest Beer Festival

Oktoberfest is set to kick off in Nairobi from Friday, 20th September 2012 to Sunday, 22nd September 2012 at Impala Grounds.

Supporting the three-day festival will be Nakumatt Holdings’ Blue Label brand, which has come out to engage its shoppers around the event, enabling them to easily purchase the tickets from Nakumatt stores as well as bringing in artists to engage the shoppers.

While commenting on the support that Nakumatt Holdings is providing to the Oktoberfest beer festival, the organization’s Strategy and Operations Director, Mr. Thiagarajan Ramamurthy, said that the company is looking forward to engaging the public and participating in fun and lifestyle events that also present an opportunity to experience the brand.

“The beer festival will offer fans opportunities to experience the magic of the Nakumatt Blue Label brands; we are going to directly engage top chefs to show you how to make food that will tantalize your taste buds using our locally manufactured Nakumatt Blue Label spices,” said Mr. Ramamurthy, who also added, “The brand is seeking innovative platforms for the public to interact with and experience the Nakumatt brand mainly through exclusive and dynamic lifestyle events that bring people together.

The highlight of the festival involves sampling of beers brewed in a variety of styles. The festival, hosted by the Big Five Breweries Ltd in conjunction with Brew Bistro & Lounge, will kick off on Friday 20th September with a keg tapping ceremony.

Famous for its culture of serving beer in one-litre mugs, the Oktoberfest beer festival 2013 will channel its proceeds towards a scholarship fund for needy children drawn from the slums of Nairobi.

Speaking about the need to support the scholarship fund, the Big Five Breweries Ltd Director, Aleem Ladak said that the festival aims to give back to the society and build dreams of young boys and girls who would otherwise not have the chance to attend high school due to lack of school fees.

“The Big Five Breweries opened its doors in 2009, debuting the Brew Bistro & Lounge. In line with our desire to give back to the society, we are looking to raise funds that will support up to 50 children by the year 2014, providing them with school fees and supplies that will enable them to undertake their school terms with comfort,” said Mr. Ladak.

Uhuru Kenyatta-owned Newspaper Transposes Ahead of Relocation & Rebranding

Just a week ago, The People’s newspaper’s gossip section, Spice, had a change of guard after one of its main writers left. But it now appears more was to come as its ‘mother’, The People, is about to undergo metamorphosis hence restructurings have taken place.

Reformed alcoholic Pamela Wanambisi has left The People Daily for Nation Media Group.

Wanambisi, who at the time of her departure from The People was the longest serving employee of the newspaper, left the sports desk as a subeditor.

Reports from the insiders at the Uhuru Kenyatta owned media group say that the frustrated former Kenya Times employee who at one time left The People to deal with her social and troubles starts work on Monday.

She has had a lot of stories about her health before she left for three years, before returning after being jobless for a long time

It will be a story of achievement for the former sports journalist who has been poached by friend subeditors Sara Bakata and Sammy Wambua.

At the same time, all-rounder Derek Otieno, a double Master’s Degree holder from the University of Leicester in the UK has rejoined the newspaper after his studies.

The talented son of a former editor has rejoined the sports desk. It was rumored that he was headed to the Standard but nothing has come out of it.

More changes are expected before the newspaper re-launches in December. They move to a new office in October

After Breaking Up with J.B Masanduku Tina Kagia Moves On!

We had earlier announced the breaking up of the of the One Drive dynamic duo Tina Kagia and J.B Masanduku. This news was met with a lot of grief as they had beautiful chemistry.

The pair who got engaged last year were separated when Tina left One F.M after a successful stint in the station  for greener pastures at Classic 105, her former employers. This morning Tina was on air returning to the radio slot she held while still at the station a couple of years back. She replaced Shiko Kaittany of the Tazama Chapaa fame.

According to sources Classic 105 needed to improve the ratings of the show and Tina was the perfect candidate as she was not only an accomplished presenter but also  tried and tested in the mid-morning show.

Tina Kagia And J.B Masanduku Break-Up!

All you Tina fans should tune in and catch more of this dainty damsel.

The Circle Flops!

i have often heard it said that event organizing is a rather hard  gig. from what I hear, the first rule of event organising is that anything that can go wrong will go wrong. Try as you might to have every last detail on lock, sometimes chaos rules the roost.

But there is no shame in having everything go south yet you had planned for everything. But that is only if you had taken care of everything. And that wasn’t the case with The Circle.

The event which was formerly associated with Bernard Kioko was taken over by one Roberta, formerly an artist and talent manager at Ogopa. Anyway, the event seemed to have been rushed. There were no media partners nor was there any form of marketing whether organic or otherwise.

The_Circle_1.jpg

Actually, we at Ghafla were shocked to hear it was on. It seemed alot like a shotgun wedding than an event that just months prior was able to attract anywhere north of 1,000 people. The event was billed as the club edition of The circle and was held at Tree House.

Only 10 people turned up. They hadn’t reached a wider audience because the marketing was poorly handled.
But Roberta from all accounts is a strong woman and I doubt that she will be deterred. She understands that sometimes this is what happens in business. Next time I am sure she will get everything right.

Despite The Harsh Criticism He Faced After The Release Of The 254 Anthem,Nick Drops A New Track!

You have got to admire the resilience of this young trooper called Nick Mutuma.

This comes only two weeks after Nick Mutuma wrapped up filming the highly anticipated MTV Shuga 3 that was shot in Nigeria where it is rumored that he earned seven figures for a cameo role, making him the highest paid actor in Kenya.

‘That Life’ is Nick Mutuma’s second official single and features Coola Gang’s Taffie. The record reveals a dark side to the life of Nick Mutuma as he pursues ‘That life’ that most young people aspire to live! The third verse in particular is the most captivating as Nick Mutuma addresses his haters!

Former Controversial ‘Nation’ Columnist Receives A Harsh Welcome At ‘Standard’!

Last week, renowned controversial columnist, Prof. Makau Mutua decamped from Nation Media Group’s Sunday Nation and made his way down to Mombasa Road, at The Standard Group. However, his landing was not smooth as the welcome he received from fellow columnist was so welcoming.

Yesterday, Sunday Standard columnist, Moses Kuria, penned a very unsympathetic welcome note to Prof. Mutua; it was more like a harsh awakening. And harsh it was because the Standard Group never published it on the Sunday paper. The post, however, found its way to Capital FM’s site.

Here’s that;

Makau Mutua has made a grand entry as a fellow columnist in the Standard on Sunday newspaper. I take this early opportunity to welcome him to the hallowed columns. I do so with both hope and trepidation. Hope:- that every sinner has a future and every angel a past and therefore the good professor can use his transition to this column to redeem himself in the eyes of Kenyans. Trepidation:- because I shudder to imagine that the Dean of Law at New York State University at Buffalo may transfer his now crashed and discredited crystal ball to this paper otherwise fabled for sense and balance.

Looking back at Prof Mutua’s crystal balls, I would encourage him never to place a bet with anyone. In fact, if he had placed a wager on his predictions over the last few years, he would lose his deposit all the time. Since he lives in America, he would by now be filing for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy protection.

Let’s sample some juices from the Oracle of the Crystal Balls.

“I have concluded that Uhuru Kenyatta and William Ruto will not run, and even if they do, they will not make it” – September 30, 2012. Fact: Uhuru Kenyatta and William Ruto were elected with over 50pc of the votes cast during the March 4, 2013 General Election. Crystal ball loses deposit.

“Former Mungiki leader Maina Njenga has turned the Kikuyu youth against Mr Kenyatta.” June 17 2012.

“I am almost certain they will be eliminated from the presidential contest because of ICC.”

“My crystal balls tell me-take this to the bank-will be a two-horse race between Mr Odinga & Mr Musyoka.” Nov 6, 2011.

“This is a Sword of Damocles. Kenyatta is damaged goods whether or not charges against him are confirmed.” Nov 6 2011.

“In my book, Ms Karua is one of 3 top presidential candidates-others are Odinga and Kalonzo Musyoka. Uhuru and Ruto are out” Fact: Mohammed Didda beat Martha Karua in the poll. Crystal ball loses deposit.

“Don’t ask me why Mr Kenyatta and Mr Ruto are “finished”. Let’s stop kidding ourselves. Their supporters should move on

“Mr Kenyatta and Mr Ruto – are “out for the count”. Ocampo has dealt them a mortal blow. This is fact, not fiction.”

“Mr Kenyatta would be wise to seek to be Mr Odinga’s running mate, and become Vice-President under Mr Odinga.” -2010. Fact: I haven’t checked Mr Odinga’s last recorded location but at one time he vowed to sell mandazi in Kibera if he loses the election, which he did. Crystal ball loses deposit.

“Mr Odinga needs to convince Mr Kenyatta that Kenyans will not elect a Kikuyu for president in 2012.” June 2010.

The predictions of the crystal balls aside, I would urge Prof Makau Mutua to take a sabbatical from New York even if it is for a year. He needs to come back and acclimatize to the realities of Kenya and Africa. Too often, one can sense that Mutua is out of touch with Kenyan realities. Take for example the civil society movement in Kenya. It is undeniable fact that Prof Mutua is the father of civil society in Kenya. In the late 80′s and early 90′s he worked tirelessly to set up a motley crew of dozens of civil society groups under the cover of the Kenya Human Rights Commission. Without these groups, the transition to multiparty democracy would have been a lot more difficult.

Over time however and with the original mission accomplished, these groups degenerated into vehicles of hate and propagating some very un-African values. For instance, I recall Okiya Omtata Okoiti lamenting to me that his Kenyans for Justice and Democracy (KEJUDE) was banned from receiving donor funding. Reason: Mr Omtata (like me) is a staunch Roman Catholic and is totally against homosexuality.

Apparently, any group that receives donor funding from the likes of the Ford Foundation, Open Society etc must sign a declaration committing to promote trans-sexual rights. Whereas this would be perfectly in the West, it is simply an abomination in Africa. Barack Obama discovered this to his horror when President Macky Sall of Senegal told him so to his face when he visited Senegal this year.

Mr Mutua is a very powerful columnist. However he may want to heed to the words of British Conservative Party leader Stanley Baldwin in 1931. When he came under incessant undermining by British newspapers, Mr. Baldwin described them thus “What the proprietorship of these papers is aiming at is power, and power without responsibility – the prerogative of the harlot throughout the ages.”

Yes Mr Mutua wields the power of the pen but he must avoid exercising the prerogative of the harlot. His columns depict a man who is short of love, so why not give him some love today.

Welcome on board Prof Makau Mutua.

(Kuria writes commentaries on public affairs and policy matters)
