This afternoon, Nation Media Group showed the door some of its popular presenters drawn from its Easy FM and Q FM radio stations. Among the affected is BreakTime Show host and comedian, Obinna Ike Igwe.

The talented comedian has since reacted following the discontinuation of his night show on Easy FM, The Homerun, alongside Brian Oduor and Ian Joe Wainaina aka Mr Cupid.

He says,

“R.I.P THE HOMERUN CULTURE….Guys its been real n a very rough road too. Having Offended some we Apologize n Med the nights for others we Thank God. Developing Story: Here Is The List Of The Leading Easy FM & Q FM Presenters Who Have Been Fired

Robert Alai is one of the most reliable sources of information not available on mainstream media -if you can dilute the venom. Today he has come out with an exclusive, a list of media personalities who have lost their jobs in a very sudden shake up.

This is what happened:

The new sheriff at Nation Media Group’s radio unit is earning more enemies than friends. The new radio boss who was formerly with Ogilvy has embarked on a bold restructuring move which has already seen the following sacked.

1. Lynda Oriaso – Presenter, Q FM

2. Sheila Mwanyigha – Presenter, Easy FM

3. Elvina Omalla – Presenter, Q FM

4. Edward Kwach – Presenter, Easy FM

5. Zuhura Ogada-Odhiambo – Commercial Manager at Nation Media Group,Nation Broadcasting Division.

6. Sam Waruinge – Editor, Q FM

7. Eleanor Khayo – Business Executive to Business Manager, Radio Department

8. Roncliff Odit – Presenter, Q FM

9. Ian Wainaina aka Dr Cupid – Presenter, Easy FM

The Homerun programme on Easy FM has also been cancelled forthwith.

In what is rumoured to be a the greatest move by the struggling unit, the Easy FM radio might be re-launched in February 2014 under a new name.

Chipukeezy, The First Kenyan Comedian With A Helicopter (PHOTO)

Chipukeezy is one of the hottest new acts in comedy. He is a testament to the mentorship that Churchill dedicates to comedians affiliated to him and his company Laugh Industry. Chipukeezy was one of the starlets discovered by Churchill who has managed to stand oput of the crowd. I dare say he is cut from the same cloth as Eric Omondi -and I say that tongue in cheek knowing how much celebrities hate being compared to each other.

When Chipukeezy came out on the scene, he was just a rugrat little child who could crack funny jokes. he underwent the baptism of fire and is now Chipukeezy, the brand. The lad is now making piles of money and now it would seem, he is being showered with corporate love.

Chipukeezy is going to be travelling round the country promoting one of Kenya’s leading pay-per-view satellite TV companies and he got a helicopter dedicated to himself for just that task. Check the pictures out below:

Muthoni the Drummer Queen & DJ Finalkut Knocked Out Totally!

She describes herself as a singer, rapper, Ms Boss Lady and a Spiritual voyager but one thing is certain, Muthoni the Drummer Queen has certainly curved her niche as the queen of the unique blend of music that she calls Afro-Electro: an edgy mix of loud African drums & rhythmic patterns with Hip-Hop/Rap, Electronic/Dance, RnB, Soft Rock, Floe-try & Other experimental sounds creating an intoxicating fusion of sounds.

Anyhow, to celebrate Kenya at 50, MDQ wants you to be totally knocked out. To do that, she needed some help on this one, so she teamed up with Kenyan HipHop DJ and host of the HipHop Culture weekly radio show, DJ Finalkut aka Fingertips za Razor Blades, to salute Kenya, and in turn Kenyan fans.

So, 8 weeks ago, she stepped into the ring to represent the 254, and in what will hopefully go down as the hip-hop transformation of the year, the famous 254 army (Jeshi 254, KOT & TeamKE) have held down the Red, Black and Green corners to ensure MDQ delivers a T.K.O (Total Knock Out).

From this track, she can only described as Kenya’s hip-hop Wangila.

To get the song straight to your phone text ‘MDQ8’ to 20270.

Super-Beautiful Habida Gets into Boxing. Next Conjestina? (PHOTO)

Who would ever imagine that super-beautiful singer, songwriter and actress Habida Maloney would one day put on boxing gear and start punching speed gears (or even people)? Believe it or not, the ‘Burn’ singer is now into boxing.

Even we couldn’t believe until we heard it straight from the horse’s mouth even though we had seen her rocking boxing globes. Today however, Habida has confirmed that she is indeed into the sport and that the photos were not “just for fun”.

She reveals that the punching game is her new fetish and despite the aching the knuckles she’s really having fun playing it.

“My boxing pics are not just for fun. Im learning how to and i think i have found my new fetish boxing. I have aching knuckles but i am happy hehehe”

Take a look at Habida at her boxing gym;

Still looking good

Gospel Karaoke Goes Down This Weekend With Olwenya, Nice Githinji, Grace Muna & More

The last month of 2013 is here, and this time round, Emerald Events Management Limited brings Christmas to you early. We will be celebrating the birth of Jesus in style. Our theme is Christ is Born.

All round gospel music has always been our focus but this time round, we break it down to an afternoon of nothing but Christmas carols karaoke. All contestants taking the stage will be required to pick a Christmas carol of their choice from the song list and attempt to sing it.

We will also have plays and skits by Galaxy Players and live music from amazing live bands in Nairobi. There will be a lot of fun for kids too, with a bouncing castle and face painting, so DO NOT leave your kids at home. In addition, there will also be guest performances by Grace Muna, so I would not miss the event for the world if I were you. Snacks and drinks will be sold. The MCs for the event will be MC Olwenya and Nice Githinji.

Charges will be Kshs. 200 for adults and Kshs. 100 for kids under 12 years of age. The best thing is that part of the proceeds will go to a children’s home to help the kids celebrate Christmas in style too.

As Leah Midamba manager of Emerald Events Management Limited puts it, “Christmas is all about coming together in love, having fun the Jesus way and giving. We will do just that. We shall pick a children’s home and donate part of the proceeds to it.”

The event will be at ICC – West (FrontRunnerz Church) on 7th December, 2013 from 2 pm.

Big up to these awesome organisations for the input they have had to the event: FrontRunnerz, Safaricom Limited, Lois Events Managers and Swizz Entertainment.

For more information, follow the hashtag #GospelKaraokeFunDay on both twitter and Facebook. Do not be shy, follow/like and interact with us on both twitter and Facebook. Our twitter handle is @GospelKaraokeKe and our Facebook page is Gospel Karaoke Night. RSVP the event’s page: Gospel Karaoke Fun Day too.

Kenyans On Twitter Make Fun Of Huddah Monroe Again -This Time About Nelson Mandela’s Demise (PHOTOS)

Nelson mandela has gone to rest in the embrace of the ancestors. Africa’s true leader is no more and everyone is falling over themselves to issue condolences message. Kenyans on Twitter are falling over laughing at the attempts to outdo each other with trying to figure out just how Huddah Monroe might goof off on this one.

I must say that the ones I have seen are hilarious. Check them out below:

Kenyans On Twitter Put Moyes Up For Sale On OLX! This Is Too Funny (PHOTO)

Kenyans on Twitter are back on it. Just yesterday, they put up Governor Kabogo of Kiambu County up for sale. Today, they have given someone else but no less eminent the KOT special, a good roasting. And this time I suspect filthy Manchester United fans are behind it. Who else would want to out Moyes when he is doing a brilliant job putting Wank Untd in it’s rightful place?

And this time, on OLX, you can log in and buy David Moyes at a throw away price but that is because the merchandise is slightly damaged and beaten up. Kenyan Wank Untd fans are pretty upset about the good job Moyes is doing and I dare say that alot of people are about to decamp because as I have always maintained, Manchester United does not have genuine fans-just people who are addicted to winning.

Check out the K.O.T shenanigans below:

6th December 2013: Ten Things You Should Know This Morning

Today, my world dawned to the news that Nelson “Madiba” Mandela had passed on to be with the ancestors. Everyone is acting sad yet I see absolutely no reason for sadness. We should instead celebrate the man and his legacy. I mean, here is a man who lived to be 95 inspite of the aparthied regime’s best efforts, a man who lived to see not just his grandchildren grow up but his great-grandchildren aswell.
We are mourning a man who set a brilliant example for African leaders yet he is no longer suffering psychological and physical torture from the attempts to keep him alive and the rumours about his death.

We should celebrate that the man has gone to be at peace at long last in the embrace of the ancestors. That is what I elect to do. Rather than mourn, I will celebrate and emulate the man.

In Case You Missed It:This Is What Went Down During The Last Episode Of Africa’s Next Top Model (Photos)

Africa’s Next TopModel was set to be the hottest reality show ever and we all had great expectations for the show. So,far  the show is not too bad except that the host is unbelievably dull.

So dull is she, that watching paint dry feels like an electrifying activity but at least the models compensate for her lack-luster hosting skills by being fierce!

As expected of ANTM,the girls participated in a photo-shoot.The photo-shoot involved the girls participating in mock ad campaigns for products by Procter & Gamble.A client representative was on set watching the shoot. This what went down

K24 And GOtv Partner For A Christmas Treat For You

Leading mass market pay television brand, GOtv and leading broadcaster, Mediamax Group have today launched a Digital Migration Christmas promotion in a bid to ensure Kenyans enjoy a smooth transition, 9 days before the planned Nairobi Analogue Switch-Off .

Announcing the deal earlier today, Mediamax Group Executive Director, Granton Samboja said K24 viewers stand a chance to win 3 decoders daily as the broadcaster takes a lead to enhance the understanding of the impending signal switch-off to their listeners and viewers.

“We shall carry out a simple trivia question regarding digital migration daily and the answer should be sent to the K24 short code 20001 starting with the word “Digital”, revealed Mr Samboja.

All winners shall be directly notified the following day. Listeners are also encouraged to tune in to Mediamax radio subsidiaries – Milele, Kameme, Mayian and Meru FM stations.

Come Friday 13 December 2013, the Government of Kenya is committed to migrate Nairobi Residents from analogue to digital TV transmission.

According the Communication Commission of Kenya, Digital migration will ensure that the country complies with the worldwide analogue switch off deadline of 17th June 2015. The migration to Digital Television broadcasting is a Government initiative resulting from the decision made at the Regional Radio Conference of 2006 in Geneva, Switzerland (RRC-06).

GOtv decoders are offer the most convenient migration option as it has both pay TV and Free-To-Air (FTA) choices on a single set-top box without the need to acquire an extra box.

Moreover, for those interested in FTA channels, only a convenient payment plan of 2 instalments is available depending on one’s pocket.

The cost for the first instalment is Sh3,399/- which includes a decoder and 2 months GOtv Plus subscription. The second instalment of Sh2,600/- is due at the end of the 2 months for those not able to continue with pay TV.

GOtv pay bouquets are affordable and are currently going for Sh599/- per month for over 20 PAY AND over 30 FTA channels while the second package GOtv Plus goes for only Sh849/- per month and offers over 30 pay channels and over 30 FTA channels designed to keep your family entertained with great news, movies, kids programming and sport.

Meanwhile, the third bouquet, GOtv Open, provides the best solution for television consumers to receive their local free to air channels in digital quality for a once off Administration fee.

GOtv Open bouquet provides access to the free to air (FTA) channels – Please NOTE this is not a new decoder as our decoders have always been the latest T2 decoders in the market.

Apart from a once-off, non-refundable Administration fee of Sh2,600/-, there is currently no additional monthly charge.

Whenever a customer opts for GOtv Open, they forfeit the equipment subsidy. World over, Pay TV generates income from subscription and not hardware sales, which is always heavily subsidized.

According to Mr Kyengo, GOtv has since its launch in Nairobi in September 2011 been playing a pivotal role towards contributing to this technological transformation and in the process will help the country to achieve its set target towards the migration to digital TV transmission.

The advantages that come with the use of the digital TV compared to current analogue television are immense. Kenyans are embracing the new technology and enjoying quality viewership and choice as well as diversity in programming. The switch to digital broadcasting will enable existing technologies to connect the unconnected in remote communities and close the digital divide.

The flexibility offered by the digital platform will support mobile reception of video, internet and multimedia data, therefore making applications, services and information accessible and usable anywhere and at any time.

Mr Kyengo lauded Mediamax for taking a prominent role towards educating and informing the public on the need to embrace this new development and switch to digital TV.

Octopizzo Signs Deal With Manchester United (PHOTO)

Word reaching me straight from Manchester seems to indicate that numba nane’s finest has signed a deal with Manchester United.
And that would explain what he had gone to do in Manchester not too long ago. For those of you not in the know, the lad was on a comprehensive tour of the greater Manchester region.

Actually, i have been slow on the uptake on this one given the news rent the internets earlier in the morning. From what i gather, Octopizzo’s deal was ratified by none other than Moyes himself and will feature the artist make music celebrating numba nane, the position Manchester United currently occupy on the table. Check out the signing of the deal below;

For the seventh year running, Sarakasi Trust brings you the biggest annual music extravaganza.

Sarakasi Trust is a performing arts development organization working toward building capacity in the performing arts sector in Kenya. The organizations’ core stems from a firm belief in the use of Culture for Development and the positive role that culture.

Dan Aceda Responds To Uncle Chim Tuna’s Article About Kenya At 50

So yesterday i did a piece in which I gave my reasons why Kenya has nothing to celebrate about 50 years of music. I still feel that if we look at the years that have rolled on as a journey, the journey becomes a simple journey devoid of the landmarks and features that would make it an epic trip.

Dan Aceda however doesn’t agree with me. And here are his reasons why:

To be honest I thought this article by Uncle Chim Tuna was rather interesting. There are things that I agree with, and things that I would like to have a chance to discuss with him, but generally I am happy that he wrote this piece because at the very least it gives us a chance to talk.

So let’s start from the beginning.

Is there anything to celebrate about Kenyan Music in the past 50 years? My answer is Hell yeah.

We produced a world sensation in Kelly Brown, wrote a song that made a career for Mariam Makeba, we have people that have won worldwide songwriting contests and others who were finalists. We have people who have played at TEDX , people who won  Kora Awards, Chanel O Awards, Emmy Awards and even people who were nominated for an academy award then  a Grammy award in 1999 and 2000. I bet you didn’t know that. Hint : Google Muungano Choir.

So are we exactly where we want to be? Hell no.

As Uncle Chim notes in his article, Kenya used to be a major music destination. We recorded, produced and drew the biggest acts in the region and indeed the world. And we don’t do this anymore. These days all we get is third rate or washed up foreign acts frequenting our stages.   Reggae fans are exempt from this, they are still drawing the best of the best year after year. Sean Paul, Richie Spice, Morgan Heritage Tarrus Riley, Alaine and more are coming to play while at their peak.  We also play less Kenyan music on radio/TV and give less airtime to local acts. Then when we do, it’s always a half -baked person and the hype kills their career long before their hit song has left the airwaves.

So what’s the problem? I don’t know.

Sometimes, it’s the audience, sometimes it’s the media but a lot of time it’s also we the musicians who just can’t sort out our knickers. It’s painful to admit this but it’s true. We have little respect for each other and little appreciation for the people that came before us.  So we take every chance to cut each other down and mis-represent our industry. The result is that we are unable to speak with one voice.  That’s why we sometimes can’t get the audiences to fully trust us yet. They only trust some of us. And we are trying everyday to keep it that way, for no reason at all.

So are we doomed? No.

Many growing industries have had this same problem and have managed to sort it out. It takes time but I have hope that we will get there. I mean, Nigerian acts now identify very strongly as Nigerian and seldom talk trash about another person’s work. The Ugandans use trash talk to push up popularity and album sales. The Congolese just write better songs than the rivals and the South Africans were lucky to have Brenda Fassie and such who were very intensely true to who they are/were.

So what do we do?

We celebrate the wins and learn from our mistakes. Show belief in the industry by committing 100% to it so that when someone is slacking we can constructively critique their work and improve. Show love and respect the work, you won’t like everything and that’s Ok. But above all Keep calm and play some Kenyan Music. 50 years later, no matter the drama, things can always get better.

{youtube}AcrgNqeNbc0{/youtube}

Why did I choose to post Dan Aceda’s response? Because I think his track “Dalili ya Mvua” changed how Kenyans view gospel -fusing it so well with Afro-soul. He transformed gospel into more than a simple way to make music. Gospel has never been simple minded since the track.

TPF 6 Update: Renowned Financial Analyst and Speaker Educates Contestants

With just 2 days left Day 51 was another day of rehearsal, but the tone of the rehearsals were bigger and better! Band Leader Aaron had the band playing in full gear and had the singers pushing themselves to their absolute limits. Coach Kavutha sat in on the lessons and gave handy advice to the contestants on harmonies.

Amos and Josh (who are singing ‘Tell Me It’s Real’ by K-Ci and Jojo) were singing with extra confidence, doing a great job of harmonizing the chorus. Much as this is an intense competition the Kenyan boys still manage to have fun. Amos, who quoted one of his favourite authors when we spoke earlier, said that by virtue of the fact that they have made it this far, they will have fun with every performance moving forward.

Hope sang Gramps Morgan’s ‘Wash The Tears’. Coach Kavutha advised him to be careful and to learn his ad libs very well to make his performance seamless. Hope listened and promised to implement.

Hope is all about practice practice practice

Over lunch hour, the contestants were visited by renowned financial analyst and speaker Ali Khan Saatchu. The financial guru came in the Academy to give financial advice for their future. This will be very crucial for the future, seeing as one person will get Ksh. 5 million on Sunday.

Saatchu spoke not only about basic financial advice, he touched on personal branding and maintaining one’s brand in the public eye. The contestants were also given valuable advice about making the most of their publicity over the 8 weeks of Tusker Project Fame 6.

Ali Khan Saachu speaks to the contestants

In the afternoon, the contestants headed out of the Academy to visit one of the many Deacons Stores in Westlands leafy suburbs. Some contestants also left for time in studio with Eric Musyoka to get their songs for the final showcase ready.

Remember to vote for your favorite contestant.

The Wait is over! Kenya’s First Musical TV Series Launched Featuring All Stars

For the longest time now, Kenyans have had to contend with popular shows like Glee, Smash, and Nashville, to quench their music-filled series thirst. But now, the wait is over as a Kenyan music series has landed. The first show of its kind in East Africa, brings to Kenyan TV a show that combines music and drama on one stage in a classic musical series.

Groove Theory, a 12-part series, first part showcased on November 20, 2013, showcases the story of Zamm who is striving to cut a niche for himself in a university that seems not to be supportive of his musical talent.

With Groove Theory we hope to contribute to the increase of local content in the market and at the same time provide Kenyans with entertainment that speaks to them and that they can relate to,” said Mwendwa of Kijiji Entertainment on the birth of the new show.

The journey to realizing the show has taken a full 8 years, from its first inspiration, driven by passion and dedication. But from Kijiji Entertainment’s first concept, and onto the partnering with Zuku Pay TV channel, it has brought a new genre to Kenyan TV. The show sees a dedicated team of 75 people, as cast and crew, tell the story of Zamm, who finds plenty of obstacles in his way as he tries to put together a band.

The choir master, a stubborn dean of students, lack of instruments, Zamm’s nosy younger sister Clarinet, and the generational pressure from his traditionalist father, are elements that stand in his way to achieving an illustrious musical career.
