13 Hottest Breakout Entertainers Of 2013

2013 was a good year for Kenyan entertainers. They were coming up left right and center! it was like, everytime I would take the time to watch TV -I do not watch TV but when i do, I keep seeing new talented faces coming about.

The new faces have been causing quite a stir and have been unsettling the old guard: you know the type the entertainers who have been around for several years not doing music and when they do, it isn’t worth a damn.

But away from bitter truth serums, this is all about appreciating the new faces that made an impact of some sort in Kenya’s entertainment industry and they are:

#13. Tiri

The lass has really come into her own -you know, outside of being Kus Ma’s (Camp Mulla) girlfriend. But she still has a long way to go. i want to see people talk about her and not add the suffix “K’Cous Girl”.

#12. Alex Kioko

I first wrote about the lad when July was peaking and I do not regret posting about the lad. He is one of the lads to watch out for in 2014.

#11. Danny Gift

Aye so the lad only has one song and he features in it but his talent is undeniable. He brought the song he did with Daddy Owen “Kazi ya Msalaba” to life and for that, he appears on the list.

#10. Kristoff

I have nothing but respect for Kristoff. he came out with a hot song, “Tattoo kwa Thigh” which was a dedication then another hot track with Khaligraph Jones. The lad is going places. Mark my words.

#9. Owago Onyiro

The lad has a refreshing approach to comedy. Unlike all the other demure comedians, he pulls no punches and takes no prisoners. his uncensored adult humour is just what the doctor ordered. I however hope he can navigate the minefield that is corporate sponsorship.

#8. Kimdanny

This lad had a scandal about an alleged pregnancy. He bounced back and has been releasing hot gospel tracks.

kimdanny.jpg

First heard about the lad from J. Blessing but I wasn’t interested. I am certainly paying attention now and so is Kenya. The young gospel artist is someone who will definitely cause seismic shifts in kenya’s entertainment industry.

#6. Sleepy

The comedian has had a roller coaster life this year. He can honestly say he has seen high highs and has hit low lows such as when his brother was allegedly gunned down by police. that being said, he tasted stardom and has run away with it.

#5. HopeKid

Hopekid has been a hit and with good reason. Although the lad was nearly derailed when he was accused of infringing Jamaican artists to make his own material, he has soared high nonetheless.

#4. Elani

This was their year. their music finally got widespread acceptance. Hope they keep it coming at the same velocity from now on.

#3. Chipukeezy

This has been his year. More than anyone under Churchill’s wing, he has managed to take advantage of the mentorship project more than anyone else. From Kiss 100 to GOtv, the sky is the limit for the young lad.

#2. Sage

Sage has to be the breakout artist of the entire year. She has been such an impact! No doubt about that!

#1. Kidis

“Aaaah! Kamua leo!”

Meet The Talented Son To Lies That Bind’s Actress-Edith (Photos)

Every week, Florence Nduta continues to shine as one of Kenya’s most gifted actresses.

She plays Edith in Lies that bind. Edith is a strong woman who says whatever is on her mind and can sometimes make you cringe as she can be so brazen. Well Florence is different from her character as she is modest unlike Edith who many find too bare-faced for their taste. She also has a talented son who has played the bass guitar for Mercy Myra and Eric Wainaina. Here is Edith’s son, Ted Mwangi

Ghafla! Exclusive: Caroline Mutoko Rigorously and Selflessly Shields Maina Kageni from Kawira of Papa Shirandula

This morning, I did a post in which Papa Shirandula’s Kawira went in H.A.M. on Classic 105’s Maina Kageni for giving advice to women callers on his show regarding their relationship. However, not everyone seems to share the same sentiments with the chatty actress.

Kiss 100’s Caroline Mutoko has come out guns blazing in defence of Maina declaring, “I will not allow anyone to butcher my colleagues just because they happen to have a well rated show.” The radio queen asked Kawira to stop “painting Maina Kageni as the maker of all things miserable.”

Here’s Caroline’s response to Kawira;

What an Amazing post and without doubt a very, very powerful status update from Kawira. Infact brutally honest – we bow to her wit and sheer insight.
However I will not allow anyone to butcher my colleagues just because they happen to have a well rated show – and hence easy target for all social ills. Let’s get something straight:

Maina has NEVER ever claimed to be a marriage counselor, a shrink, or relationship Guru.
Maina is the host of a show, that allows you to laugh, scream and in the case of some of these women AND MEN – a chance to vent.
Maina and Mwalimu provide a platform.

I understand the need to castigate the people who casually destroy their lives and shred their relationships on national radio; but it is un-necessary to drag Maina into it, to call him names or even claim that he destroys marriages. It is also utter trash to refer to him as clownish. Maina is many things, but clownish is not one of them.
Also – married or not irrelevant. Do his listeners connect with him? Then case closed.

Indeed the issue of Unhappily Ever After must be addressed, but it will not be fixed by trying to paint Maina Kageni as the maker of all things miserable, nor will it be fixed by setting ridiculous standards and making comparisons that those very women can barely relate to. Jada Pinkett? Like for real?
Maina’s show has forced us to re-look, re-think, re-evaluate and even re-consider how we enter relationships and how we make those relationships work.

The Status update is brilliant; however I draw the line at maligning Maina.
If no-one called, Maina wouldn’t have a show. Simple.

Wahu Now Reveals Her New Baby’s Face after Only Showing Us the Back of Her Head 2 Months Ago (PHOTOS)

From the covers of magazines to candid paparazzi shots, there are so many ways to capture the first glimpse of a darling celeb baby. But some stars put it all out there on social media for everyone to see, minus all the fuss — even directly from the delivery room! However, Wahu isn’t that type of a celeb mum.

Mrs. Mathenge kept little Nyakio out of the limelight for two months and when she finally brought her out, she only showed us the back of her head. However, yesterday, Wahu deemed it fit to shows the first public photo of baby Nyakio.

No, it wasn’t on a cover of a magazine neither was it on social media. Instead Wahu choose to do it on her blog, Baby Love Network.

For the first time ever, check out the cute baby girl of the Mathenges;

Wangechi releases Free Digital Mixtape: This Girl is the Embodiment Of Talent. Check It Out Here

Rarely in Kenya does it happen that a producer can work with a plethora of artists and still connect with them to produce fantastic music. But Kevin Provoke is just that guy. And when he discovered the talent hidden deep with the demure lass whom we have come to know as Wangechi a match was made in heaven.

And I have been listening to her musical offering and I must say that not many Kenyan artists be they established or upcoming have the talent displayed by the young lass. The lass rhymes so fluent and flows with the rhythm -the hallmark of African rappers.

the lass seems to be in her element when she is flowing in the booth and it is easy to lose yourself to her music. Check out her stuff below:

Awwwww! Wahu Praises Her Hubby Nameless for Being the Best Dad to Her Daughters

Kenya’s power couple, Wahu and Nameless is leading by example. Theirs, unlike most, seems like a real-life fairy tale romance. They support each other’s pursuits and ambitions fully, even if that means taking turns and that has seen them succeed in both their careers and relationship.

Yesterday, Wahu praised the father of kids publicly for being a sweet and loving dad. Posting on her blog, Wahu was full of praises for Mr. Mathenge and it went on and on…

“The other day my hubby asked me, “ala? Kwani Nyakio doesn’t wake up at night these days?” Lol…I wish! It’s more like you don’t hear her wake up at night.

The truth is, there was a time when my attitude was more like, “We must suffer together!” This was especially true with my first born child. I would wake up, feed the baby and convince my hubby how his wonderful broad shoulders were perfect for burping the baby.

So yes, we suffered together. We’d both have wine red eyes every morning, for a looong time.
But as time went along, my wonderful husband began to “drop the ball” and would probably not burp the baby enough…or he would fall asleep in the process, or even get fast asleep so that I wouldn’t disturb him with baby matters.

So here was my take home from that whole experience – Unless I really do need the help, there are some things I’m better off doing myself, because someone else may not do it to my satisfaction.

So there are things that I’ve decided I shall not delegate: washing the baby, cleaning her feeding bottles and burping her after her middle-of-the-night feeds; that’s of course if she doesn’t wake up at night and want to play, because at that point I will happily hand her over to my hubby for some valuable “daddy-daughter bonding”.  So the role sharing continues, nevertheless!”

How many super couples have you seen appreciating each other like this in public forums?

Mama Baha Of Machachari Looking Sexier Than Ever! (Photo)

Machachari is without a doubt one of the most popular comedy/adventure shows in Kenya with adults and children alike tuning in every Wednesday to watch cheeky antics of the children in the show.

We follow the adventures of Govi, Baha and Stella,Almasi, Joy and Fatso  whose friendship transcends society’s divide of the rich and poor.
Apart from the children, there are also adults who play a fundamental role in shaping their lives and one of them is Pamela. Pamela is married to Coaches and is the mother to the terrible two, Govi and Baha and making them toe the line gets crazy at times.

This is because Baha  is the kind of boy that is always up to some mischief such as truancy and is also a bad performer at school. His brother Govi on the other hand is responsible, reliable and compassionate. Due to their different natures they often get into fights and trouble and their mother has to clean up the mess. Away from the screen Mama Baha is quite the femme fatale. Have a look

Former Tahidi High Actress Without make Up.Hot Or Not?

Most celebrities always make sure that they look phenomenal on TV and during events. So how do they look when they opt to skip the lipstick, concealer, bronzer, smokey eye shadow and mascara?

Do they look as pale as ghosts or do they have the last laugh because they still  look super stunning even without all the cosmetic embellishments? I got a picture of one of the sexiest DJ’s in Kenya Dj Pierra and she still  looked pretty hot without the cosmetic frills.

Apart from being a DJ Pierra is also an actress and you probably know her from Kisulisuli, Citizen Television’s ever trendy: Tahidi High and M-Net’s Changes. She also dazzles in films such as Cry of the
Innocent, Aziz, Greencard, and Enough is Enough

Robert Alai: My Life is in Danger, Assassins Have Been Sent to Kill Me

If you’re as radical as Robert Alai then you’re certain you will ruffle a lot of feathers whenever you open your mouth/ or write. And ruffling feathers Alai has: from the altercations with Alfred Mutua, Safaricom, Francis Kimemia and William Oduol, just to name a few, the blogger certainly is not a darling to everyone.

Being the big critic he is, Alai seems to have hit out at a powerful politician who decided not to take it lying down; he retaliated. The unnamed political figure allegedly sent hit men to his rural home to do what they do best.

In a Facebook post, Alai revealed that his life is in danger;

Assassins have been sent to my rural home to look for me. Seems like county leaders who fear criticism now want to intimidate me. The truth hurts. Seems like they really hate the truth.

He further tweeted that this is not the first time that he has been ‘intimated’;

“4 months ago they broke my fingers. Then last month they cut my ears. Now they have come with guns. That’s Kenyan politicians”

Kabooooooom! Papa Shirandula’s Kawira Daringly Hits Out at Classic 105’s Maina Kageni

It’s no doubt that Maina Kageni’s breakfast show is the most listened to radio show in Nairobi (if not in the country) partly because he chooses to tackle issues that nobody else wants to remain behind the bedroom door. Fans of the show will co-sign that Maina receives most calls (and complaints) from women than guys in the hope that he’ll help put their relationships back on track.

However, Papa Shirandula’s Kawira is an aggrieved lady. A couple of days ago, she lashed out at the popular radio presenter referring to him as “a clownish Radio Presenter— who is NOT even Married”. This, in regards to the relationship counsel he dishes out during his show. The ladies who call in were not spared either as she swung at them.

“No hate speech intended…only life lessons From a very good friend…

Morning Married Woman,I heard You call into the Maina Kageni Classic 105 show,I heard You lamenting about how Your Man is lousy in bed, I heard you broadcast your Man’s weaknesses to the public, I heard You jeering at Your Man, lambasting and deriding Your Man ON NATIONAL RADIO!I heard You, Woman! According to You, he’s a dog !According to You, he’s lousy !According to You, he is the reason Marriage sucks! According to You, ALL MEN are jerks, idiots!BUT HEY,Maina will NEVER give Your Man a reason to come home early, THAT’S YOUR JOB! Maina will NEVER tell Your Man how to make love to You,THAT’S YOUR JOB! Maina will NEVER tell your Man what turns you on, THAT’S YOUR JOB! Maina will NEVER remind your Man it’s your birthday/anniversary, THAT’S YOUR JOB! Maina will NEVER enlarge your Man’s manhood, ITS NATURE. You either PUT UP with it or SHUT UP! Maina will never spice Up your sex life, THAT’S YOUR JOB! My dear Lady,I t’s about time You started appreciating that Man…It’s about time You started loving that Man like You used to….It’s about time You started treating him like You used to.,. It’s about time You started thanking God for that Man…It’s about time You rekindled that LOVE! Ask Michelle Obama the stuff she’s been through, AND YET HER MARRIAGE is still going strong!Ask Hillary Clinton the stuff she’s been through, AND YET HER MARRIAGE is still going strong…Ask Jada-Pinkett Smith what stuff she’s been through, AND YET HER MARRIAGE is still going strong! Hey!Quit whining!Quit complaining!Quit grumbling! Before you JUDGE and CURSE your Man, try to UNDERSTAND and BLESS Him !Maybe, YOU ARE THE REASON HE’S THE JERK HE IS!You have a choice; Either choose to entertain the Nation with stories on how crappy Your Man is, OR choose to entertain HIM with stories on How Blessed You are to have Him! THE CHOICE IS YOURS!!! WISE Women are busy trying to make their marriages work, while STUPID women are busy seeking advice from a clownish Radio Presenter— who is NOT even Married! #2013 STATUS UPDATE OF THE YEAR#”

Do you agree with her?

Rabbit Set To Release Yet Another Album This Month

Last week, some half-descent websites rent the airwaves with a story about Rabbit impregnating Sage and then leaving her. Ghafla didn’t run it. What we are running however is a story about Rabbit dropping his album this month.

And that is what I feel vindicates my assertion that he is one of if not the most hardworking Kenyan artist outside of Riverwood. For those of you not in the know, the lad released an album just last year which was called “Orutu ya Masudi” which had what I though t was a huge impact on Kenyan hiphop given it was a treasure trove complete with gems such as “Swahili Shakespeare”.

But enough of my hype. Let the lad speak to us through this interview done by niaje.com. Check out the video below:

10 Fashion Trends That Should Die Before 31st December 2013

And the countdown to 2014 begins. And so, courtesy of the Ghafla office, here are the 10 clothing and beauty trends we’d like to see disappear by 31st December. Feel free to add in your suggestions!

Shaving off eyebrows then drawing them back on. This takes the number one spot because it is one of the worst trends to ever happen. The fact that the eyebrows look like the Nike logo does not help. Please stop

Muffin tops
I don’t know who came with the idea that tighter is sexier. One of the worst things I have seen is rippling flab dribbling down ones side trapped in between what looks like a spray on t-shirt and too tight jeans. This sight is so bad that it would make Samson prefer to remain blind. Too tight jeans that leave you with a muffin top should just go!

http://img.allw.mn/www/thumbs/87/845.jpg

Mankinis
Who came up with this ghastly clothing?

http://i00.i.aliimg.com/wsphoto/v0/601442482/Free-shipping-White-Black-Classic-font-b-Man-b-font-font-b-Mankini-b-font-2012.jpg

I first saw it when it appeared on screen in 2006 when Sacha Baron Cohen rocked it in neon green .I hated it then. I hate it now. How would a man find it comfortable to walk around with his genitals protected from the elements by a sheet of cloth hung from a sling?

Bad Weaves
I have seen good weaves and I have seen BAD weaves. Weaves that stay on for longer than six months and some animals decide to make a home under it. Weaves that smell like a wet dog and weaves that have been on so long that they have singed at the ends. These weaves should just weave!

Animal print on animal print. When done subtly animal trend is unbelievably hot, but when you wear a leopard print shirt on snake skin bottoms and wear zebra skin shoes, you look like a mutated animal that escaped from the Mara

http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-2m68-K0rZ0E/Tyb3fXcCJRI/AAAAAAAAAGg/HldiiZkyzS8/s640/nicki-minaj-leopard-print-dress.jpeg

Half boots half sandals
These shoes have got to be the most confused shoes ever. Sandals are for warm weather boots are for cold weather.I don’t get this i’m hot but am cold ish!

http://img.alibaba.com/photo/373517671/ankle_boots_sandals_lady_sandals_shoes_flat_sandals.jpg

Ankara, Ankara, Ankara everywhere
Ankara also means kitenge. I have seen Ankara print on everything, shoes, pants, dresses, skirts, bracelets, bags and for a good reason this trend is super hot, but not so hot if you wear an Ankara suit with matching shoes.

Skinny jeans that are waay too skinny on men

http://www.motherpedia.com.au/images/directoryimages/2664/skinny-jeans-on-men__large.jpg

I don’t know where this trend came from but I wish it would just vanish!

Condom Shoes
Also called plastic shoes or sandak.

http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_Y_S8TJQbZOI/TN44ATSu4iI/AAAAAAAAAxs/j73qVI_qSNM/s1600/PlASTIC+SHOES.jpg

I admit I once rocked these shoes, I like my comfort but they are not so comfortable when the sun is burning hot; plastic is the worst thing to have on when it is hot. It burns, you sweat and you suddenly feel  like you are walking barefoot on hot tarmac

Fishnet stockings
I think these things are simply dreadful. My colleague Phil has tried convincing me that the stockings are hot but I just can’t wrap my mind around it. Maybe I am old fashioned but I think a lady should not be caught wearing them on the streets. Save them for the bedroom and the only time you should wear them to work is if you are a stripper. Torn stockings are a NO-NO!

http://www.polyvore.com/cgi/img-thing?.out=jpg&size=l&tid=65717615

Bird wings eyelashes
I am referring to those eyelashes that are so long that it feels like a bird flew right past you. Glamour experts  advice that: If it looks like a pair of tarantulas are hitching a ride on your eyelids, take it down a notch.

http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-_26V1xMjWZE/Tr1CXrpGmfI/AAAAAAAABNw/EWziQyqE3AU/s1600/Bad-Fake-Eyelashes-1.jpg

or two…

Half shaven heads
This trend is something that I hoped would die out, but it is still going strong out there.

http://cdn.madamenoire.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/Mel-B-Shaved-Head.jpg

Scary spice attempting to rock the trend and failing terribly

It gets worse when people shave a large part of their hair off only to leave an onion sized hair at the top

From Ratchet to Classy: Fabulous Photos of Video Vixen Maura Malanga Clothed Up

It’s the most wonderful time of the year! Musicians, celebrities and other irrelevant D-Listers all seem to be cleaning up their acts as the year draws to a close. In an industry characterized by a flourishing number of ‘socialites’ who are determined to make it, whatever it takes, caution is thrown to the wind as skimpy dressing becomes the order of the day.

However, when a dress looks like it’s being together with a string and a prayer, it’s always the best time to put down the double-sized tape and grab the nearest leso – very fast!

This seems to be the driving force behind one of the most sought after video vixens, Maura Malanga. Most recently, the big-booty’d twerk queen has been dressing decently like a classy lady she ought to be as opposed to the ‘handkerchiefs’ she’s been donning. She even admitted it herself, I got that beast (Divacious) inside me that twerks but the other side of me am just a sweet girl living day by day…

Check out;

Bogonko Bosire is still missing. Days have turned to weeks and weeks to months. Bogonko Bosire, the editor of Jackal News is still missing and people seem to have gotten over the fact. It was cool to tweet about the agony his family is undoubtedly going through but now all is forgotten.

Apathy. A quality I find sickening in human beings.

Stupidity, yet another sickening quality although, if we are honest, we have suffered from chronic bout of stupidty from time to time. Such is life. Why am i mentioning stupidity? Well, i personally did not buy the whole “I was abducted” story being put forth by Arnold Lakhita Mwashumbe. Not only did I find the excuse stupid, I found it callous.

People who disappear in Kenya rarely ever are found and even when such a miracle does happen, it is their body that is found.

Callous was the manner in which the response to Ghafla’s expose was done. People were worried. Caroline Mutoko herself asked me whether we as Gh! had gotten involved. A wife, albeit allegedly estranged was left worried. And for what? A dismissive response about a rumour site.

The thing is, in Kenya, Arnold being rescued from kidnappers would have made news. Actually, the police involved would have tried to get credit for his safe recovery.

Gossip site. Doesn’t explain why people were so vexed.

Whatever happened to the days when a man would mess up, apologize and take his lumps?

Now feel free to canvas for support for the lad. Please, fix this problem by sweeping it under the rag. I hope it works THIS TIME.

In Kenya, when someone is missing, their family who are grieving and wounded by the disappearance of their loved one. They are often subjected to mortuary searches and hospital checks. that means they see alot of unclaimed remains fitting the description of the loved one.

To claim to have been abducted is not just escapist, it is callous. it trivializes the trials and tribulations endured by people actually searching for their loved one. Think wider, think deeper, think harder.

Open Letter to Willy Paul & Gospel Artistes

Late November immediately after completing his O-level exams, Gospel singer Willy Paul released a single, Missi, but something went terribly wrong as the single wasn’t doing well like a typical Willy Paul song. It would later emerge that the rain started beating the song in the very first verse.

It was a catastrophical for the young Gospel singer since Gospel DJs as well as TV and radio presenters vowed never to play the song on blasphemy grounds. Willy Paul immediately dashed back into the studio to amend the controversial verse, and the matter seems to have been settled having redone the song.

Now let me be clear, am not trying to act holier than thou, but this is just some wise counsel for Willy Paul.

The controversial verse in the previous version of Missi went like,

“Ungekua kabinti ningecheza love song, huku na kule ningekufuata wewe…ungekua mtoto ningekutoa nappy, kila siku kubali ma-pampers…ungekua jambazi ungenitenda, singecomplain.”

Translation (direct)-in reference to God, he says;

“If you were a young girl I would sing you a love song, I would follow you everywhere, if you were a baby I would remove your soiled pampers everyday, if you were a criminal I would let you rob me without complains”

Willy Paul brought God down to the level of humanity and compared God to a lady and in a sexual connotation he tells God if He was a young girl he would sing for Him a love song.

As if that is not enough, he brings God further down to the level of an infant and tells Him that if He was a kid I will remove your soiled pampers daily.

Am not so sure how changing a baby’s nappies can be compared to the love of God but it’s rather disgusting that a Gospel singer would openly taint and blaspheme the name of God so openly and a section of Kenyans who profess Christianity sing along in delight.

Well, as if that was not offensive enough, he compares God to Satan. The bible says

In John 10:10, the Bible says, “The thief cometh not, but that he may steal, and kill, and destroy: I came that they may have life, and may have [it] abundantly.”

In that quote, Jesus Christ compares the devil to a thug, but Willy Paul goes a step further and calls God The devil. Which true Gospel artiste does this? Not that am judging Willy Paul but the truth must be said. Even the Bible in the book of John 8:32 states so clearly;

“Then you will know the truth, andthe truth will set you free.”

We all know Prince of Peace, Jesus Christ is coming soon, we all know He spoke of a time when the Gospel will be trashed in the ground and false teachings made to thrive. But it should not be on my watch.

How? The Bible is very clear about this: “we are to TEACH others the right way, we are to TEST these teachings to see if they are of God, we are supposed to REPRIMAND others and we are to CAUTION others.

Let’s not forget that Lucifer was the best musician in Heaven and no doubt he used music to deceive and lead many astray just like he is today. Christian writers explained the motives of the angel’s rebellion and the nature of his sin in the same way, but added pride against God, which they mention more frequently than envy or jealousy with regard to humanity.

As a matter of fact, there have been widespread complaints from Willy Paul’s fans that apart from his first two songs, “Rabuka” and “Sitolia”, the others are nothing close to Gospel songs.

Gospel music has become the greatest tool for the devil. It is a song whose words are buried in blasting popular beats that appeal to the heart and before you realize it, the songs have crept into the churches hearts and minds of young and old alike. And every moment we dance to the lyrics and sing along, we help the devil in heaping a bunch of insults to the name of God.

It is a high time that Gospel artistes look carefully at what they feed the masses with since they are ministers of the word of God. Let them not just sing anything and since they are in Gospel ministry, their work is taken as Gospel songs.

Which way is it? Gospel Ministry or Gospel Industry?

Battle Of The Divas: Who is Hotter? Bridgette Shighadi Or Brenda Wairimu?

Brenda Wairimu and Bridgette Shighadi are two very beautiful ladies and there is no denying that. The pair are I dare say some of the fairest maidens in the land and definitely the top 13 hottest damsels in Kenya’s entertainment industry.

That is where all the niceties end and opinion runs amok. We here at Ghafla recently had an argument over just who is the fairest of them all and all I can say is that I am confused on this one. I need someone to come help me decide on just which of the two beauties is hotter. And who better the=an team Ghafla at large?

Now have your say, who is hotter? Bridgette Shighadi or Brenda Wairimu?

Game of Thrones: Kenyan Media Edition

The digital migration deadline has continually been postponed by the government, and the reason cited is that most people have not yet equipped themselves with the necessary hardware for this move to be feasible. While this may be true, when you look at who has been most vocal about halting the move, you find that it has been the three incumbent TV stations, KTN, NTV and Citizen who have been at the forefront of court appeals to have the deadline postponed. Are they just doing this for the good of their viewers? I think not. In this piece I shall unveil to you what I suspect has been going on behind the scenes of this most epic game of thrones.

According to research, TV provides the most valuable form of advertising, up there with the likes of Google in its effectiveness. Why is this so? First and foremost, TV is the most engaging form of media around. It is not rare to have professional people with heavy spending power waste hours every day catching up on their favourite TV shows. This captive audience, along with the ability to fully tell a brand’s story through compelling images, audio and video, makes for the ultimate marketing package. Owning a TV station means real media power, and the ad dollars will therefore flow gratituously. Being the biggest in TV, means owning the media throne.

(Nation Media Group CEO Linus Gitahi)

Further to the evident power of television, the current state of analogue TV stations has meant that starting a station is a prohibitively expensive endeavour. You need billions of shillings just to lay the groundwork for an analogue TV station. You must set up your own masts and infrastructure, which blocks many an entrepreneur from even thinking of going into this area. So far, only KTN, NTV and Citizen(Royal Media) have been able to break the analogue TV mold in any sort of profitable way. Backed by billions of shillings from the Nairobi Stock Exchange and other private investors, these three stations are the only ones so far that have been able to amass the right blend of premium content and massive audiences that advertisers crave. This has translated into billions of shillings in revenue over the years. Now it doesn’t look so philanthropic when you see these three stations fighting to keep away the digital migration deadline, does it?

http://www.thecitizen.co.tz/image/view/-/2047976/lowRes/609268/-/f7ism0/-/sholei.jpg

(Standard Group CEO Sam Shollei)

You see, the truth is that digital signals will significantly lower the cost of setting up a TV station. Where before you had to set up your own expensive masts and infrastructure for billions of shillings, now you will have central providers like Startimes and GoTV, who, in laymans terms, will be connected to a cheap, central satellite, and all you’ll have to do to set up a station of your own, is pay a small fee to the decoder providers, and you’re in business! This disruption of the status quo is not good news for the current incumbents. It is now clear that we will see a situation similar to radio, where everyone and their grandmother has set up a radio station because of the relative ease and low capital spend. The proliferation of TV stations will almost certainly break up the current monopoly, and the big three will have to bear the huge risk that one of them might become irrelevant after the wave of new stations hits. Thing is though, no one knows who exactly will lose, and none of the big three want to roll that dice. That is why, I think, they block the digital migration.

http://www.businessdailyafrica.com/image/view/-/1911272/medRes/237541/-/maxw/600/-/ummoey/-/PIX4.jpg

(Royal Media Founder, SK Macharia)

What trends in other media sectors have shown though, is that winner of the digital age will be the one who sets up the largest network. Just like Royal Media rules radio with their 8 tribal stations(out of a total of 120 radio stations in Kenya). Of the current TV stations, who is best poised to enter into this brave new world? Nation and Citizen have shown experience in setting up their own networks. Citizen(Royal Media) have an ultra-successful tribal radio network, while Nation Media Group’s network of newspapers such as Daily Nation, Business Daily and the East African are all authorities in their niches, so I think they can use this experience to set up a new TV network. The one who is in the most danger is KTN, owned by Standard Group, who so far have shown no prior ability whatsoever to set up a network.

http://broadcastjournalism467.files.wordpress.com/2011/05/images2.jpg

The ultimate winner though, will be the vendors of the decoders(Startimes, Zuku, GoTV), for as they say, in every gold rush, the ones who make the money are the ones selling the shovels.

Kenyan Record Label Produces Hit Song for a Popular Underground American Rapper

In 2012, Fardeen Productions introduced American underground artist, Q to Kenyan music scene. This came in form of a rap (what else?). Q was part of the 2012 Kisima Music Awards hip-hop cyphers, Crush Groove 666 vol. 1-3, The Ring 1-2, and One Mic 1-2.

The cyphers included some of Kenya’s best hip-hop artists such as Bamboo, Kimya, Khaligraph Jones and Kayvo K-Force. Q made history again by being the first African-American hip-hop artist to perform in Africa’s first live hip-hop cypher at the 10th annual Kisima Music Awards show.

In November, Fardeen Productions released Q’s track, Can’t Be Timid.

Can’t Be Timid was released earlier in November in both California & Nairobi by Fardeen Productions.

The track has heavy hip-hop beats but then again the thriller soundtrack gives it a horror feel giving birth to a whole new genre, something like a hip-hop horror flick.

It’s about having confidence to take certain risks and going against all odds by all means necessary achieving every goal set forth in one’s life.

Meanwhile, Q will be releasing his Fardeen-produced album, “The Last Generation” in the coming days. For now here’s Can’t Be Timid;

TopMusic Producer Tedd Josiah’s Advice To Artistes Trying To Pull A Beyonce

A while back, Tedd Josiah was one of the most celebrated producers in Kenya but during the 2007-2008 post poll crisis the producer felt that his life was in danger and moved out of the country.

Before leaving the country he did a lot of great things for the music industry among them producing compilation albums called ‘Kenyan, The First Chapter’ and ‘Kenyan, The Second Chapter’. The two albums featured Kalamashaka, Gidi Gidi Maji Maji, Necessary Noize,Jimmy Gathu, Maina Kageni, Ndarling P and Ugandan musician Kawesa .He is also the founder of Kisima award and Blue Zebra, one of the leading production houses. He boast of working with musical bigwigs such as Poxi Presha, Suzzana Owiyo, Achieng’ Abura, Abbi, and Didge among others.

Well the producer is back in the country and imparted his sagely wisdom for the musicians trying to pull a Beyonce and release music while the year is ending.

Releasing anything 3 weeks to the end of the year in the music biz is totally suicidal unless u got the label to push like Beyoncé does.
I’ve seen artists making some dumb moves in a bid to block each others growth.
Dear artist – what’s urs is urs. When it’s ur time to shine then u will shine no matter what.
Don’t stifle each other’s growth.

Classic FM Presenter Nick Odhiambo Beats His Girlfriend And We Have The Horrifying Photographs

Nick Odhiambo is one of the most popular radio presenters in Kenya but today I have come across a story that I know he will not like to read. But Uncle Chim Tuna “hapana tambua likes!” I am here for Ghafla and the story is up.

I have tried to call Nick Odhiambo but his phone is off and the story must run. I have it from impeccable sources close to the story that Nick Odhiambo battered his girlfriend. The cause of the altercation is as yet unclear as some allege that she cheated on him while others allege that she has been disrespecting him all through and he finally snapped.

A source I have close to the man claims that the lady has been partying and coming to his house late at night never mind the fact that they do not live together. It has also been alleged that the lady would enjoy some drinks with her friends only to drop in unannounced and uninvited to his home to raise hell.

On the flipside, the sources close to the lady claims that the Classic FM presenter was told (or possibly lied to) that the lady whose name is Jane was cheating on him and he went ballistic. The last time I attempted to call him, his phone was still off but I still intend to give him his right of reply.

For now though, check out the images below:
