This Is What Huddah Monroe Does For A Living

So what do socialites do for a living except twerk, many of you ask?

Well, Huddah Monroe recently revealed what she does for a living and it will come as a shock to some of you. Huddah shared this photo whose caption read:

BBA 8 Rep Annabel Mbaru Speaks Up for the First Time on How Big Brother Changed Her

It’s Thursday and apart from that meaning there’s only one day left to the weekend, it also means it’s the day we go back…way back. Okay, not so much.

So, today, one of our reps to Big Brother Africa: The Chase, Annabel Mbaru, has opened up about her experience in Biggy’s house almost a year on. But why share this now? Well, Annabel is challenging you to take a leap of faith and audition for this year’s BBA.

Just what did Big Brother do to her? Sharing a photo collage from her eviction party last year, Annabel reveals;

“My eviction party;

To be quite honest I hated every second of it… I look dark skinned, tired and unhappy in these pictures… I guess choosing to air my life on a reality based show came with a price tag. Everyone’s experience was different so don’t let my speech speak for others. Nobody will ever know what I went through other than the individuals who experienced the beautiful nightmare. If you ask me the experience made me grow thick skin.

Annabel_eviction_party.jpg

Anna Bananna does not take nonsense from anyone at all I went quiet post Big Brother because I let small minds control my life. Tjooo! Social media can seriously make or break you lol… I let live after everyone always thinks they can do it better than you, but trust me those are the same people suffering from FOMO hehe… All in all I thank all the beautiful people who supported me… I’d definitely do the same. I speak my mind oooo, I’m that emotional lol… Don’t get it twisted…

@huddahthebosslady thank you for always being there for me, you know it’s a banter. @malonzalonzichege @wangondunick @alexchege (former Kenyan BigBrother reps) thank you for always being my brothers in the industry. @wameyokw much love papa #InstaIDontCare #Instatruth #Instalove #EvictionParty 2013 @bigbroafrica PS; Good luck to everyone who auditions…Trust me, it’s a beautiful experience…”

What TV Hunk Nick Mutuma Has in Store for His Dad Ahead of Fathers’ Day (PHOTO)

Celebrities have dads, too, and many are already using Facebook to honor them this Father’s Day. With the day around the corner, plenty of celebs are already taking to social media to show the world what their dads (and other dads) mean to them.

TV hunk and rapper, Nick Mutuma, may just be the first celeb to honour the man in his life. Even though he confesses to childhood beatings, the Mashariki Mix host is unreservedly fond of his dad and even got a special gift for him.

Last night, Nick posted a photo of a bottle of Famous Grouse blended Scotch whisky complete with customized name especially for his dad and wrote, “I am already on that Father’s Day tip.#ToastToYourDad #THEFAMOUSDAD #PERSONALIZEDBOTTLE”

20140611_131315.jpg

He also posted another personalized message to his dad;

“Even though you gave me a beating every time I messed up, it only made me a better man”, reads the note.

Nick Mutuma Weighs In On The Vera Sidika Bleaching Saga

Everybody seems to have an opinion on Vera’s Bleaching and for close to a week, this story has been trending. Mostly because socialites and bleaching are very new to Kenyan pop culture.

Every one seems to have an opinion about it, but what most Kenyan celebrities are saying is that what Vera is doing is her business. This is what Mashariki Mix’s Nicholas Mutuma said :

“I honestly think Kenyans are giving this bleaching thing too much attention. For me, as long as the ‘bleacher’ is above 18 years I have no issue with it…I love tattoos and if someone told me to stop getting tats I’d ask them to F**** off. We as a country have more pressing issues to worry about than the colour of one’s skin. Good morning.”

Battle of the Socialites: New York Vs Nairobi

A large number of you were outraged by the amount of cash that Vera spent on her hair (150,000) and shoes (about 304,000) that amounts to about 454,000 Kenyan shillings  which is approximately  5,172 dollars, that is assuming she was actually honest about it.

Well, the price pales in comparison to the copious amount of money socialites in New York spend.

According to the Business Insider and The New York Times, you will spend a bucket load of money to make it to the ‘top shelf’

http://gt0.guestofaguest.net/wp-content/uploads/wppa/Jean_Shafiroff_Julie_Macklowe_Chiu_Ti_Jansen2.jpg

Jean Shafiroff a socialite with friends

An experienced socialite will spend around $455,450 on social events, $7,500 on makeup and styling, $18,000 on a personal trainer, and $5,700 yearly for Botox and glycolic peels. This totals to 486,650 dollars which is about 42,338,550 Kshs!

A ‘lower-end’ socialite will spend about $98,645 (8,582,115) annually, but such socialites are often frowned upon and are laughed at behind their backs.

Vera may not spend that wild amount of money on being a socialite but among all Kenyan socialites she stands out for being at least close to the old definition of being a socialite.

Mzungu Ghafla Reader Opens Up About Vera Sidika’s Bleaching: This Has To Be The Most Intelligent Response To Caroline Mutoko!

I swear to the ancestors that Vera Sidika is currently the hottest thing in Kenya right now! Talk about social capital! She has harnessed the little mileage Ghafla gave her and then the attention -that as always comes eons too late- from traditional media and run with it. There is no stopping Vera Sidika or her bleaching!

Yesterday, I reached out to Baba Ghafla’s mentor Caroline Mutoko for her opinion on bleaching and she humbly obliged my request and she gave me a piece which has generated alot of debate around the subject of “skin toning” or as we ratchet people say, bleaching.
But one commentor had something to say that I found profusely wise and intelligent and I had to share his take on the entire matter:

WHITE_COMMENT_ON_BLEACHING.jpg

Dominique Hines

Caroline Mutoko, what a frustrating, ill-informed article you’ve written. Comparing blooming eye-liner to skin bleach. Really?!!! Are you actually insane?? Bleaching – an act which stems from centuries of self-loathing, an act, which puts your health at significant risk, strips the racially defining melanin from your skin is comparable to applying eye-liner? Okay, love. Here’s the thing. You are an imbecile who is far more dangerous to young black women than the likes of Vera because you posit as a social commentator whose views are respected. The likes of Vera most people with more than one brain cell will not take seriously – she’s harmless and dumb and can carry on doing her thing. You on the other hand should be ashamed of yourself. Not for defending her right to do what she wants with her own body – I too defend a woman’s right – it’s your inane simplifying of bleaching, which I find incredibly offensive and nuts. You need to consult your history books – read up on how colonialism and slavery affected and continues to affect post-colonial Africa and transplanted Africans. Educate yourself on the harms of bleaching and the damage it has done to many. Clearly, you are one of those who has been adversely affected. Seek help. Embarrassing!

And why did I post this article? Because bleaching is an attempt to get a lighter skin tone to placate the colonized mind’s struggle to get closer to western standards of beauty. I wanted to give a “mzungu” the opportunity to let those of us who feel lightskin is the benchmark for beauty something to ruminate on.

This By Far is the MOST Honest Journalist Job Post in the World. Tells it as it is!

Most firms when looking to fill a position that has arisen will always sugar-coat the job description not telling you what exactly to expect if/when you’re hired. That’s why most guys will recite the prayer for patience every day when they leave the house for work at least for the first few weeks.

But for one job listing that appeared recently in the States, they told it as it is.

The job post for a reporter position in Marshall, Missouri, kept it real, telling potential job seekers what to really expect.

“You’ll also pay your dues by covering stale city council meetings and water board sessions. You’ll document the annual Shriner’s parade and we guarantee you’ll step in livestock poop at the county fair. But, hey, if you want to be a journalist, you’ve got to have a tolerance for a certain amount of BS. Right?” reads the job listing for the Marshall MO Democrat-News.

And what’s the pay for covering the Shriner’s parade and stepping in shit? Between $15,000 and $20,000. But at least they got health and dental insurance.

honest job post

Fan Attacks Curvaceous Grace Msalame For Allegedly ‘Dissing’ Vera Sidika

Nothing unites and divides a country quite like a socialite! Kenyans have put aside all their petty tribal squabbles to focus on a common ‘enemy’ Vera Sidika for her ‘apparent crimes’ against creation and African traditions.

Those ones that are ‘pro Vera’ will cut down anyone who trolls Vera even a little bit as Grace Msalame came to learn. The curvy babe found herself in an uncomfortable situation when she posted this subliminal stab at Vera Sidika.

“ I’M FLOORED!! Vera Sidika now on ALJA FREAKING ZEERA! With Nigerian Girls still missing!! Or the fact that Christians are being forced into martyrdom in Sudan! WOW! Looks like Pop Culture really is ALIVE!! I just hope that misguided Youth are wise enough to tell what is real, pure & whole! I have to add this though to @vee_beiby your PR Skills are a dime a dozen 😉 and you are Beautiful Ma, from the encounters we’ve had your pretty lovely, always let that shine through. “

A fan by the name  Miss Mokeira  wasn’t too pleased about this and replied  angrily with this ” Lupita is gracing most popular shows and magazines no one is complaining yet no subject of bring back our girls has been touched or talked about in those shows and magazines, Aljazeera features Vera Sidika you go mad about why they don’t air Christians dying….bring back our girls can you let Vera be coz you have a show that features big people in entertainment I haven’t seen the impact you put on matters concerning security or anything of that sort? Make me understand Aljazeera is limited in airing news I stand corrected with facts.”

http://limegreen.co.ke/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/IMG-20130204-WA0006.jpg

On realizing this had gotten out of hand, Grace replied with this “WOW!! A true Vera fan I see. My dear please read between the lines here… My issue is what is being celebrated here! Granted we’re all on our own individual journeys, but being a mother of two girls I am startled with the generation they are growing in! Moral decay, misconceived notions of beauty & instant gratification! Whereas the truth of the matter is that we are beautiful just as God made us! You may enhance here & there, but always stay true to your pure essence, plus are you aware that your body is your temple!? Which deserves respect & love only you can give yourself, especially if you know how powerful & blessed you are!! Beauty comes from within my dear, the outward is fleeting &pride only leads to a downfall! Yes celebrate your achievements & success, but always be accountable to those around you when you hold a position of power or influence, because fact is your actions will definitely influence the next generation! Mentorship is what this life is about, with the little you know teach & isn’t it better to teach self worth & show younger girls that you can hold an intelligent conversation? All that makes you all the more beautiful honey… And FYI Kiss TV is Purely an Entertainment Station! So don’t expect news unless Enews & there is a lot to celebrate, understand, challenge & engage where Entertainment is concerned. Always read between the lines Ma… Always

Robert Alai and Vera Sidika Involved In a Bitter, Silly Tweef

Robert Alai is officially the king of tweefs. After being embroiled in a bitter feud with NTV’s Larry Madowo, he butted heads with Vera Sidika.

At one point or another I knew these two were destined to tweef, but I never thought the bone of contention would be a pair of shoes! Robert Alai called out Vera for allegedly lying about how much here Christian Louboutin Isolde pumps cost and Vera did not take it too well.

This is how the conversation went:

Robert Alai ‏@RobertAlai: Ati Vera Sidika said she bought the shoes at $3,500? Look, they cost only $176 (Ksh 15,000) at most.

The Journey That Is Fatherhood: Nonini Opens Up About Fatherhood

Father’s Day is right round the corner and  have managed to get some of Kenya’s most popular stars to open up about the journey fatherhood set them on. And after writing a couple of pieces, I reached out to Nonini who obliged but on this one, I wanted him to do things a little differently.

When i embarked on this celebration of fathers and fatherhood, I received some overwhelming feedback but one in particular stuck to mind:

I like ua article about the journey to fatherhood now , what r de responsibilities of a good father?

And Nonini had this to say about what he learnt through his journey and indeed, fatherhood instills wisdom in the minds of men:

People don’t understand that Fathering is not something perfect men do but it’s something that perfects the man. I would never trade being Jays dad and all the joys of seeing him grow and discover the world day by day. The fact that he mimics my every move/words keeps me on toes to be better everyday!

And Sunday being Father’s day, I decided to give him something. And seeing as men DO NOT EVER give each other flowers, this is what I settled for:

Some Johnnie Walker Black. Why? Because #DadsLoveWhisky.

And now you know what to get your father as a gift for Father’s Day. #DadsLoveWhisky

Unbelievable! Here’s the Class Emmy Kosgei Started Only Few Years Ago

Her music career has grown in leaps and bounds and her success in music and life in general is immeasurable, but Gospel songstress, Emmy Kosgei, has always done one thing: share with the less fortunate.

A few years ago, the singer decided to sponsor a group of students through primary school and looking at those kids right now, you can’t help but marvel.

Emmy went back to Hope Academy she was more than proud and glad to learn about the kids’ progress. Few years after setting up the project, the kids are now in Class 5.

Here’s Emmy with her ‘kids’;

And here’s what she had to say;

“God’s grace has been sufficient !!! It is a blessing to give n change someone’s life ! It is fulfilling !!! Don’t wait for someone to do something; be the change!!!! Share the little u have n God will increase it once u proof to b a gud custodian !!! Stay blessed.. B a blessing!”

Bleaching: Willy Paul Speaks

Bleaching, bleaching and more bleaching has been on everyone’s lips all week long thanks to Vera Sidika’s unapologetic admission on national TV.

Well, in under 72 hours, Vera had gone across the globe and back as the Al Jazeeras and BBCs of this world all scrambled to get a piece of her to portray African women as ungrateful beings who don’t appreciate their cocoa skin complexions.

Anyway, since everyone has been chiming in on the matter, Gospel singer, Willy Paul has also added his 2 cents.

According to Willy Paul;

“Today morning I was listening to one fm discussion. .. bout how girls are bleaching their skin… please stop this bleaching idea… its so shameful that even men are following the same
path… God is watching you.. are you trying to prove God wrong? That he made a mistake ?

Dnt get me wrong.. am not pointing any fingers…. just felt its good to let it out…”

And letting it out he did.

“Lingala Ya Yesu” Hit-maker Cooking Up Another Hot Jam

He gave you ‘Lingala Ya Yesu’ and you all fell in love with it. And that wasn’t the end because the song went ahead to win the Song of The Year accolade at Groove Awards.

And now Pitson is cooking up another hit song and he’s confident that you’ll love it too. As he puts it, “Najua batoto ba Kenya bataipenda”.

Pitson was in studio as late as yesterday afternoon putting up together the last bits of the song in preparation for its release date which is yet to be announced.

Dubbed, ‘Kilele’, the new jam is highly expected to go the ‘Lingala Ya Yesu’ way.

THROWBACK THURSDAY: Shaffie Weru Hanging Out With Ja Rule

Ja Rule was at one point the hottest rappers in the game. Personally, I never really felt his singing “rap” but I guess I was just one drop in the ocean to the millions who lapped up his music. Then again, I was biased. I was all about G-Unit. What a fool I was back then. Anyway, Ja Rule was in Kenya for a concert that was filled to capacity inspite of the rain.

And when he was in the country, Shaffie Weru hosted him on Kiss 100 FM and surprise, surprise, he had no tattoos on his arm. And neither was his now trademark beard in place. Check the pair of them out below:

Ja Rule looks like he could care less though…

And Now Queen Elizabeth’s Media Is Talking About Vera Sidika’s Bleaching!

Let it never be said that Kenya is a country of no significance. Let it never be said that Kenya has no role to play in the geopolitical scene. But this has nothing to do with my militant, moderate leftist leaning. This is about Vera making it to BBC. Aye, BBC believes she is worth an entire article on. And this is what the BBC had to say:

Two photos of Vera Sidika from her Instagram page where her skin looks light

Two recent photos of Vera Sidika from her Instagram page

Skin lightening is under the spotlight in Kenya after a well-known socialite, Vera Sidika, revealed she has spent tens of thousands of dollars on the treatment – prompting the hashtag #BleachedBeauty.

Vera Sidika is sometimes dubbed “Kenya’s Kim Kardashian”, as – like Kardashian – she is famed for posting photos of her voluptuous backside on social media. But this time, it’s not her bottom that’s under scrutiny.

On Friday night she gave an interview on Kenyan TV in which she spoke openly about the skin lightening treatment she has recently undergone. “Looking good is my business,” she said matter-of-factly. “My body is my business, nobody else’s but mine.” Sidika said she’d had the skin lightening done in the UK and suggested it cost somewhere in the region of 15 million Kenyan shillings ($170,000; £100,000). She says she’s already seen an increase in demand for her services.

The response on Kenyan social media was huge. “I was accused of promoting or endorsing a white-centred view of beauty for African girls by interviewing her,” the host of the programme Larry Madowo told BBC Trending. “The criticism was quite intense.” NTV decided to run a follow-up programme to discuss skin lightening, and encouraged people to share their thoughts using #BleachedBeauty.

Larry Madowo Calls Kenyans “Hypocritical” For Dissing Bleached Beauty Vera Sidika

Since Vera Sidika appeared on NTV’s #thetrend she has been on virtually every mouth, every tabloid and every radio station, and that is the power of the Trend.

So huge was the storm on social media that it caught the eye of BBC Trending who interviewed Larry on the reaction that he got for interviewing Vera. Larry says. “I was accused of promoting or endorsing a white-centered view of beauty for African girls by interviewing her. The criticism was quite intense.”

vee_b.jpg
Larry also added that he found that the reaction especially from men was quite hypocritical and astounding as Kenyan men generally prefer light-skinned women as opposed to ‘Dark Skinned’ women.

What do you guys think? Is Larry Madowo right for calling people ‘hypocritical’ for condemning Vera for bleaching and yet Kenyan men are generally #teamlightskin
