STARTIMES MEDIA DROPS DECODER PRICES EYEING INCREASED MARKET SHARE

Digital Pay Television Company StarTimes has today announced a price reduction in acquiring its approved StarTimes decoders. The price drop is expected to enable more Kenyan access and enjoy quality digital television programming, further growing the company’s market share.

The StarTimes Pay Television Digital Box will now be retailing at KSH. 1,999 from KSH. 2,999, while the Free To Air STB will retail at KSH 4,499 from KSH 4,999. The new prices take effect immediately and will be available at the company’s retail shops and distributors across the country.

To complement the offer, StarTimes will also provide each month free access to different 5 premium additional international channels apart from 13+Local channels for the Free To Air subscribers as the company seeks to further add value to the existing and potential subscribers. The five channels include Star Novela, Fox, Sentanta Africa, AMC, and National Geographic Gold (from 1st June-31st June).

Commenting on the new development,  StarTimes Media Vice President for Marketing Mr. Hans Han observed that the key differentiator for StarTimes in the market is its flexibility to suit consumer needs as the company makes headway to achieve its goal of ensuring majority of Kenyan households have access to digital television.

“Access to digital television is no longer a luxury, as more and more Kenyans embrace the technology. We are impressed by the headway so far in our quest to ensure the majority of Kenyan households have access to affordable digital television service. We continue to also develop value adds with the aim of giving subscribers a taste of our premium programing,” noted Mr. Hans.

StarTimes is positioning its brand not only as the most affordable but also one with an enviable range of channels offering at a competitive cost which includes Sports, Lifestyle, movies, news, kid’s channels and documentaries.

The company has set a target of covering up to 90% of the Kenyan population by the end of this year hence giving more Kenyans access to the affordable digital television service while ensuring subscribers get value for their money.

StarTimes Media has a global subscription base of over 10 million, 4 million of whom are in the 12 African countries it currently operates in.

Thee MC Africa, formerly Taio Tripper has finally broken his silence and decided to release an EP album that was dropped today. The rapper was earlier today on Kiss 100 with Adelle and he announced the launch of his highly anticipated solo project Man Made Machine. The lad who has largely kept silent after the break up of his group Camp Mulla has finally dropped the album.

Meet the One Artiste who has Given Taarab Swag

For a very long time now Taarab sound has been one of the most distinctive genres of music linked to the rich Swahili culture from the Coast.

But now there’s a new artist that is changing the face of a music genre that rose to prominence in 1928 with the advent of the genre’s first star, Siti binti Saad. Mario Lugarno has fused the soothing sound of taarab with a local rap genre and proved that anything is possible in music.

He just released a new video, Kuna Vile, and even though it’s still amateurish, this guy has potential.

As expected the feminists and critics have come out, torches blazing and flashing pitchforks at the app creators. Their claim is that the app ‘objectifies women’ and a ‘momentous violation of women’s rights’.
The outcry is generally coming from the West and other continents but Africans are thoroughly enjoying the ‘inside joke’ app.

Effiong, CEO of the company that created the app told CNBC Africa  that “I want to start by saying it’s a joke and secondly, it’s an inside joke that might be misunderstood by people outside the country and Africa.

Those who know matters photography say that great photographers have a sharp eye for emotions and moments and the styles used differ due to passion and interests of the person behind the lens. But technicalities aside, photography is a very lucrative career.

Guys like James Panaito, Peter Cacah and Kevin BouArt have made a name and big bucks from this business.

President Uhuru’s official photographer during the 2013 campaigns, Emmanuel Jambo, is another photographer who has amassed wealth thanks to his avant-garde photography skills.

Jambo was recently featured on Young Rich and to the surprise of many, the soft-spoken photographer is a millionaire whose fortune is worth is over Sh20million.

His first income from photography was $8,000 (approximately Ksh.70,000); and made his first million 6 years when he shot a South African TV series.

The most money he’s earned in a day is 4,000 Euros (approximately Ksh.476,000) and at one time received Ksh.50,000 after working for only 15 minutes.

However, it hasn’t been smooth all the way. Jambo has endured losses with the biggest being Ksh400,000.

2014 Is The Year Bahati Will Outshine Everyone

Last year, the year two thousand and thirteen anno domino, Willy Paul was the hottest act around town. Willy Paul transcended the barriers of gospel and was in fact, a cross-over artist whose appeal had even the staunchest atheists I know singing along to his songs. but this is no long the year 2013 (year of our Lord).

 

And this year, 2014 anno domino, the artist who seems to have taken the country by storm is Bahati. And I can honestly say I have no idea where this Bahati fever has come from but he has wowed everyone. Today, I was able to watch him perform to young children and indeed, they were feeling all his songs. They could sing along to every single song.

Over the weekend, I saw him perform in Machakos to a capacity crowd of more than 15,000 people and they sang to each track he performed and did so word for word. I went as far as to tell him that he is currently the hottest star in Kenya. And that is fact backed by empirical data!

Who else have you seen who has adults, teachers and children, teenagers and twenty *something* year olds?

Biko brings a new meaning to “African Lady”  with his song ‘African Lady’ where he is celebrating a lady’s dance moves and her beauty he takes the point home when he sings in Dholuo!

He serenades the women while maintaining a high level of versatility comprising of RnB and Pop infused with the ultimate African sensation.

Describing Biko will not be doing him justice, but for all ladies sake, I shall try.  Biko is smart, talented, self–driven and downright sexy did I mention sexy?

Bio

At the age of 10 his family relocated to the UK where he pursued his studies up until high school level upon which he came back to Kenya.

In 2008, Biko nurtured his singing talent through choir practice at his local church which allowed him to take part in an array of church competitions where he won the Best Solo Act category not once but three times in a row. Biko also set up a dance crew with his friend Alfred Mutuku which has enjoyed great success by winning the Rocky Dance Competition and coming in as the 2nd runner up at the highly acclaimed Sakata dance competition.

Over the years Biko has dedicated time to redefining his sound and  BIKO has worked closely with Sub Sahara’s multitalented producer, Big Soul among others and recorded songs as well as collaborations with fellow label mates. His most anticipated singles namely ‘African Lady’ and ‘Tulia Nyumbani’.

Biko’s aim is to share his life’s journey with the world through his soulful vocals and electrifying dance moves. At only 24years his life message is simple; if you believe in something, pray and hold on to it and watch it manifest into reality.

Rabbit, Sage And His Fiance: Rabbit Finally Speaks Out About His Relationship With Sage And His “Wifey”

Rabbit impregnated Sage. Then He got engaged to Nana who bore him a beautiful daughter two months after Sage had borne him a beautiful bouncing daughter.

 

The timeline was very telling. However, I know Rabbit. He is one of the most sober minds I have ever met. I rarely meet Kenyan celebrities whom I can call cerebral but he happens to be one of those few. So when he owned up to the Sage pregnancy, it was nothing special. It was expected.

 

 


When he got engaged to Nana (his fiance) I understood that he had thought things through and did what he felt was right for him. However, there were recently rumours that Rabbit and Sage were trying to rekindle their flame. Rumours that seemed to excite the internets but it seems that was not to be as Rabbit killed the turkey talk by committing his future to Nana.

And when he was asked by a weekly rag published by Standard Group and issued for free as a pull out got to talk to the sensational rapper and this is what he had to say:

And if you thought it’s only ladies that are into this behavior, think again! We just realized that besides the ladies who are okay with letting their private areas breathe freely, the guys are just as guilty of it too.

Recently in an interview with Spice Magazine, Churchill Show’s Sleepy David confessed that he goes commando from time to time, in fact he said that his definition of relaxing means going commando. So now we know who likes to air their family jewels or he’s simply supporting the Male Cancer Awareness Charity.

Are You His Type? Eric Omondi Describes His Ideal Woman

This morning, comedian Eric Omondi was on KTN’s Morning Express show and just before its culmination, the host, Sophia Wanuna, put him to task to reveal his ideal woman.

Well, he might have hesitated at the beginning but he went on to disclose the type of woman that suits him. As one of the most eligible bachelors in town, Eric has been eyed by a bevy of city women. And so, Sophia was only doing fellow women a favour.

Here’s an excerpt of that interview;

Sophia: What’s your kind of a woman Eric?

Eric: uhh (clearing throat)

Sophia: Talk to HER. She might be watching.

Eric: Am looking for an African woman. Most preferably Kenyan. Uh, a woman who earns a lot of money and can take care of me. As you can clearly see, I have a lot of issues and problems that need to be solved. And I believe only a woman can help me change my image. And this, I mean physically (things like my hair). I’ve tried for 16 years to add weight; right now it stands at 39kgs which is 2kgs more than last year. And I believe that this is possible if you’re out there and am requesting the government to assist. Am not getting any younger but smaller.

In spite of the Controversy “Nishike” Elicited Sauti Sol Still Cares About Children. Here’s What They’re Doing for Them

Towards the end of April, Sauti Sol released a steamy video, “Nishike” that was not only controversial but also caused a lot of heart attacks in censorship committees but pushed it to indescribable views on YouTube.

And just as the dust is finally beginning to settle from the “Nishike” controversy, the boy band is set to embark on a project it began a couple of years back. On June 16th following their “Soma Soma Foundation”, the boys will read aloud to children on the designated Day of the African Child.

As the Reading Ambassadors, Sauti Sol is expected to endorse Start A Library’s message and spread the spirit of its message: “Reading is cool” through its (Sauti Sol’s) networks of fans and friends.

The Read Aloud is done in partnership with a number of organizations such as the Kenya Human Rights Commission, Kenya National Library Services, Kenya@50 Secretariat, Wema Trust, City Education, Kilimani Foundation, Center Narovinu, African Braille Center and Kenya Society for the Blind.

Start A Library hopes to break the Guinness World Record in reading aloud during the Day of African Child 2015. This will go a long way in slaying that awful saying, “If you want to hide something from an African, hide it in a book” The current World Record is 223,363 children reading simultaneously from across 909 venues in the United States.

Holy Dave Making a Difference For The Underprivileged Children

Rapper and philanthropist HolyDave alias David Muthengi founded The David Muthengi Foundation with the aim of giving back to the society. He chose to focus on education sighting that education plays a direct role in reducing poverty and enhancing economic development.

Along with his friends Kelele Takatifu, Christ Cycoz, Recapp and Ken the Dj The David Muthengi Foundation has partnered with the Braeside School Community Service program to host a series of charity concerts raising support for purchasing special education learning materials for underprivileged students. The beneficiaries of the last two charity concerts were Thika School for the Blind and Dagoreti Special School.

Weird and funny as it may seem, clown Obinna Ike Igwe yesterday received a box full of condoms as his birthday present as he turned 20-something from co-host, Nice Githinji.

The father of three; a father of three; a girl and two boys (the kids are not of the same mother) may have gotten more than he bargained for if ever he asked for birthday presents from his pals. The mischievous TV/radio host didn’t shy away from sharing photos of his “perfect” birthday gift.

Former Camp Mulla Members Cause Major Traffic Jam In Westlands ON PURPOSE

A couple weeks back I was strolling away from the launch of Miss World Kenya at Sankara(but do I say? :), when as I approached the junction next to KFC Westlands, I saw a HUGE traffic pile up all across Westlands.

Upon walking a few metres ahead, I noticed there was a Chrysler 300C that was parked in the middle of the junction. No hazard lights, nothing, just a car standing still smack in the centre of the road. After a few moments, I saw a familiar face open the front door of the Chrysler. Camp Mulla’s Chief Cheerleading Officer(CCO) Mykie Tuchi popped out and sauntered to the side.

 

 

Then shortly after that, Taio Tripper did the same peacock routine, strolling out of the stationary vehicle in the middle of the road.

 

 

 

After all the Camp Mulla members exited the car, a couple members of their entourage also pulled the same stunt. At this point I was thinking maybe the car might have been stuck so they were leaving it behind… until after everyone exited the car, it casually left it’s position as if nothing had happened. This whole dog-and-pony show took about 10 minutes as the Camp Mulla gang made sure everyone saw that they had arrived in a Chrysler(think you can handle us? http://www.nanrinella.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/hummmm.jpghttp://www.nanrinella.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/hummmm.jpg)

 

Worst part is, as they slowly came out the car, traffic snarled up on all sides of the road: the Crooked Qs side, the Oil Libya side, the Sankara side and the Sarit Center side. Westie literally came to a standstill, and this was at about 9 o’clock, so people were either going home or trying to get the party started, while the young boys flossed at their expense.

But as God’s Chosen Blogger Uncle Chim once said,

so I reached out to Camp Mulla’s camp to see their side of the story. All their management had to say was, “Kus Ma wasn’t there, he was in his own car,” effectively leaving the rest of the former members out to dry.

Joey Muthengi who was promoted to the “it” girl in entertainment by Tusker Project Fame is definitely a fighter. She has literally been through infernos and brimstone to reach where she is.

Her success wasn’t handed to her on a silver platter and faced a lot of opposition in her career. Robert Alai & NTV’s Larry Madowo Embroiled in a Fierce Fight

On Wednesday night, Dr. Christian Turner, the British High Commissioner to Kenya hosted a dinner of a kind at his residence that attracted Kenya’s top twitterati among other tech savvy stakeholders.

Dubbed #EatTweet2 the occasion was meant to discuss the impacts of social media usage and the ethics that comes with it. While all the Twitter bigwigs engaged in the trending topic, the night didn’t end without some drama pitting NTV’s Larry Madowo and blogger Robert Alai.

It was Larry who fired the first salvo when he tweeted that Alai is responsible for this huge echo chamber of nonsense on Twitter and so it was ironical that he’d talk of being responsible.

Alai didn’t take it lying down and he immediately responded saying Madowo was just seeking attention and maybe to get some street credibility.

 

It didn’t end as Alai had more to say;

 

The feud seemed to attracted other parties and it wasn’t just anyone but Ronnie Osumba who said;

At this point, Larry decided to make it clear that he has nothing against Alai;
