GHAFLA! INVESTIGATES: Unmasking the notorious Muthurwa Music Pirates
“The world is a man eat man society.” This is a famous quote that best describes music piracy in Kenya. Despite most Kenyan artistes spending millions in production, their music is cheaply sold in the streets. So next time you hear a popular Kenyan artist is struggling to pay bills, know that piracy is the virus.
Government bodies such as MCSK have done little to nab the music pirates.
But where does the real music piracy take place? My investigations led me to Muthurwa Market, notoriously known for music piracy. Here, pirating music dens are dimly tucked in small wooden sheds. Young music pirates are busy with laptops pirating local music.
Huge boxes full of local pirate music albums are all over the table. Some merciless music pirates are busy packing the albums in huge cartons to be transported to different towns across the country.
From popular Kikuyu and Luo music, to the new age music, the ruthless music pirates understand their game.
I pretend I am a businessman who sells local musical CDs and need a new stock. One of the cartel leaders known as “Vaite” welcomes me warmly. He politely asks me the type of music albums I want to purchase. I decide to settle on Sauti Sol’s and Gloria Muliro’s albums since they are so hot in the market. To my shock, these albums are sold at KSh. 25 bob, yet the same original musical albums are sold at KShs. 500 at major licensed musical outlets. But how do the music pirates get the musical albums they mercilessly pirate?
They either buy an original copy and dub, or else download the videos from YouTube and compile them into a VCD.
More shocking is that these piracy dons are located just near the Muthurwa market entrance. Further investigations reveal that young men are employed to man the piracy dens to monitor the MCSK officials.
According to Pulse, sometime back some popular artists, led by kamande-wa-kioi, invaded the piracy dens in the market, but were welcomed by bloody machete-wielding music pirates. Their call to MCSK to act fast on the vice went unanswered. But more questions are left unanswered, since the piracy dens are located just near the gate. Local artists spend millions of shillings(over 300,000) in production and they need to make profits. MCSK should tighten their loop and eradicate these music pirates. If serious action is not taken against these merciless cartels, music will stop being of economical value to our Kenyan artists.

Davido is currently the hottest star in Africa. And there is no denying it! If he isn’t scooping awards and accolades, he’s ruling the charts with such a stranglehold that no one has managed to undo. And My friend Jeff Omondi was catching up on some much needed RnR on the sandy beaches of Mauritius when he happened upon Davido.
When I say catching up on some tan, I mean Jeff needed to tan.
Yes, even darkskinned brothers can tan. But I digress. Anyway, so Jeff met Davido and they got the talking. And as they spoke, Jeff got to broach the topic of Kenyan music. But nay, Davido reportedly told Jeff that he likes Sauti Sol’s music. So much so that he bumps to it every so often.
And when Jeff asked him which Kenyan artist he would be looking to work with, he said Sauti Sol (they are a group, I know). So I hope their manager is reading and scheming on how he can make that happen because this would truly make Sauti Sol become continental super stars!

Since upcoming dance-hall artiste, Blaqy took shots at radio presenters for being ’unprofessional ‘when it came to which music gets airplay, other people have come out calling out the radio presenters for being unethical.
The accusations leveled against the radio presenters include, exchanging sex for airplay, money for airplay and as of today, playing music depending on the ‘personal feelings’ they have for a certain musician.
Chess a former Tujuane presenter took shots at the unprofessional presenters saying that :
Radio stations, more specifically RADIO PRESENTERS who use their feelings to decide what Kenyan music to play on air..You are FAILING as part of the major custodians of Kenyan music. Your personal issues or problems with anyone should not affect your job. Your job is to make sure GOOD Kenyan music gets airplay as much as possible. You’re not supposed to play a certain artiste’s music coz you like them as a person, but because they make GOOD MUSIC. And that’s that…give GOOD music airplay. Your personal issues should not destroy professionalism. Which therefore gets me wondering, since when can a radio presenter ban and totally not play an artiste’s music…GOOD music because of their own personal feelings toward the artiste?Half of these people we trust with this Kenyan Industry should just be replaced and totally done away with. #yeahisaidit #takeitorleaveit
In their defense, I know for a fact that the radio presenters do not dictate which music gets played. That’s the work of the producers.

Kora Award Winner Neema Ntalel Raises The Roof With Her “Victorious” Song
Neema Ntalel discovered her love for music while in High school and following that discovery, she was in every associated club and group; school choir, drama club, student music groups and many of these garnered her several school awards.
Later as she continued to perform and sing, Neema began a clear pursuit for a career in music and her first single, ‘Impressions of love’, was a song about the different images of God’s love for mankind. This single was then nominated for an AGMA- American Gospel Music Award, for best international act in 2003.
In 2005 Neema was nominated and won at the All Africa KORA Award for best female artist-Eastern Africa. This award led to a six week tour in Canada, her first music tour. Since this initial tour, and over the years, Neema has been part of several others to countries like the USA, Netherlands, Zimbabwe, Uganda, Tanzania, South Africa and Mozambique.
Earlier in 2010, Neema was part of the theater production, ‘Daughters of Africa’. . Neema says she was part of this production because it presented the bright and correct image of her homeland.

Elani’s Take On Vera Sidika Bleaching
Hip music band Elani is quite they diverse trio, Brian is the lightest, while Wambui is the beautiful caramel and Maureen the gorgeous chocolate.
The Elani girls are proof that beauty has nothing to do with color; they are both extremely beautiful despite their varying skin colors. The band recently came in and gave their two cents on bleaching, something which has become the hottest topic since Vera Decided to go about 50 shades lighter.
Wambui is of the opinion that “You do not have to be light to beautiful.” While Brian chimes in that “White is not always right.”
Wambui says that the only problem she has with bleaching such as in the case of Vera, is that bleaching reveals how inferior you felt before bleaching yourself. Adding that “Everything God did was right “
Maureen however was of the opinion that if Vera feels more comfortable with herself as a light-skinned woman and used natural products then good for her.
