Major Throwback: DJ Kalonje when He was Just Few Months Old (PHOTO)

Family snaps of the stars before they were famous are almost impossible to come by. However, what maybe our first major throwback, we just stumbled upon a photo of DJ Kalonje when he just months old!

We can bet you would never ever have recognized him. Infact, just like other celebs, unless they started out as child stars, you might only recognize some of Kenya’s most famous as they look now. But celebs are, in fact, just like us, and we have a baby photo of Kalonje to prove it.

Check it out;

Radio Citizen has a New Hot Presenter

Following the departure of Maggie Waithera AKA Mtoto wa Kike earlier in the year to rival Milele FM, Radio Citizen’s mid-morning show, Chapa Kazi, was dented.

For some time now, Jeridah Andayi has been riding solo but not anymore. Starting Monday, June 23rd, Syombua Mwele will be co-hosting the mid-morning show alongside Jeridah. Yesterday was her last day at Musyi FM ahead of her Radio Citizen debut.

The Radio Presenter of the Year 2011 posted a farewell message to her Musyi FM fans saying;

“It has been real, it has been fun. The most exciting moment of my career was to be crowned the Radio Presenter of the Year-Groove Awards in 2011. I have made friends and fans like you and I’m forever grateful to God. Thank you for believing in me while on Musyi FM. I will miss you, my colleagues, the studio and the language of course. Catch me soon on Radio Citizen FM, CHEMI CHEMI YA UKWELI 106.7. Baraka.”

Meanwhile, Syombua will still bring you sports news during the 7PM bulletin, Jungu La Mwanaspoti, as usual.

Meet Kemikali The Lethal Gospel Rapper

There is a new sheriff in town .He is different, unique and purposed .Andrew Netya ,popularly known as Kemikali to his fans ,is the new sound in Kenya’s Gospel ministry .

The 22 year old rapper brings a new distinctive voice to the swelling local music scene .He describes his sound as Afro Pop fused with Genge .

Inspired by his own musical journey, the rapper seems ready to take his space in the industry .He recalls having been prepared for this period while still growing up .As a toddler, he admired song by Sukuma Bin Ongaro whom he believed left a mark in the industry .Later on when Rufftone took the music industry by storm, he knew right then that he had found a mentor .It was around this period that he began composing and singing his own songs to friends at a young age.

It was while in high school at Friends School Kamusinga ,that his passion for music gained ground .He developed more mature lyrics and pursued his passion even deeper after high school while taking his studies at Buruburu Institute of Fine Arts(BIFA).He later joined a popular Luhya band ,Abetsomi as a backup vocalist .The band taught him discipline ,hard work and passion .These three principles drove him into launching a solo career as brand Kemikali.

Set to release his first single,”Sunday” Kemikali lauds efforts of those individuals that sacrificed almost selflessly to get him there .He cites his first producer Hebz as a motivation. Kemikali , whose turning point was the opportunity to curtain raise for Daddy Owen back in 2012 at his local church-Chrisco Kimilili ,credits his journey to one Gas Fyatu formerly of the Hiphop group ,Ukoo Flani Maumau .Having met him in 2013,Gas Fyatu listened to his sound ,was impressed and fathered him into the industry .He linked him to Kenya’s top producer Big Soul(Sub Sahara records)who has worked with mainstream artistes like Prezzo,Cannibal,STL,Amileena,Collo,P-unit,Makena,Kayamba Africa among other key artistes

It is Big Soul whose tireless work on Kemikali’s first single that sets the rapper in a zone that he admits is humbling while at the same time a challenge he is ready to take.

If You Are Black, These Guys Want To Challenge You

Kenya’s first Aftermath party was held a few weeks back, and if you missed it, pole kwako. It was the awesomest bash that weekend, without a doubt.

But not to worry, the party organisers DYCE are not stingy peoples. Finally Aftermath vol. 2 is out, due to the demand for a repeat of the event. They made

it happen again.

You know peeps have to keep it fresh with this party thing, so this time DYCE has decided to bring something totally different on A.M Vol.2. From the

success of Vol.1, this time round the thought of that night shall be left in your head for days, because what happens at the Aftermath stays at the

aftermath(if you know what I’m saying).

Aftermath was invented for the love of remembering all the good that happens in a club , we bring that night life to another level, a night where you will be heavy on that memory of what happened at the club.

BLUE VS BLACK AFFAIR is the theme of the event.
The event is all about that blue dress code verses the black dress code, one can mix the colours if they choose to, but the event is to bring out the two In

one kind of a feeling in the club, black and blue are colours that always compliment each other, and you can never go wrong with black or blue. To top it up

what you will experience in this event, from the music, the interactions, to the club its self , will be one atmosphere where you will be going home with

the “wanting” feeling of another vol. of the Aftermath, the Djs we have picked for this vol.2 of the AFTERMATH also add up to what will make you want more,

make you feel more than just a night out, make you wake up the next two days and feel like doing it all over again, hence this is the that event will leave

you with a feeling of “ I want another event like this of black vs blue affair” theme, hence the name “Aftermath”.

Choosing Skyluxx to host A.M vol.2 is to make this more than just an event, we have more planned for the night, from the random shots, to the random gifting

of the best ladies on behalf of explicit fashions, fresh music from Meta djs, what a way to make you remember that ill night it will be.

Explicit Fashions will be in the house to award the best dressed ladies in the house with high top fashion shoes of any kind all on behalf of dyce.

KEEP IT BLUE Vs BLACK AFFAIR

Mugithi Singer Kamande wa Kioi asks “Baba” to Go Back Where He was; Life was Better without Him (VIDEO)

Controversial Mugithi singer, Kamande wa Kioi is back on the spotlight for all the wrong reasons. The Pusi (Kanyau Gakwa) hit-maker jumped on the #BabaWhileYouWereAway bandwagon but started a storm he has no idea how big it is.

The Benga artist did a song that directly rebukes “Baba” asking him to go back where he was.

Performing recently before a crowd in an unidentified part of the country, Kamande sang, “Nikii waiyera? tatua guchoka nitwamboeka dadi amba ushokie muhahe waku okou urari baba!” which translates to “What have you come back for? Go back, you bore us Daddy. Do this, rudisha kimbelele huko ulikuwa Baba!”.

Here are the lyrics (and translation) of the short song;

Baba.. Baba.. Baba.. You better go away

Ora! (Kwenda!) (Go!)

Nikii waiyera? tatua guchoka nitwamboeka dadi amba ushokie muhahe waku okou urari baba!

(What have you come back for? Go back, you bore us Daddy. Do this, rudisha kimbelele huko ulikuwa Baba!)

Turaikarete na thayu muingi while you were away, tamba ucoke kou urari, you better go away! x2

(We were living in a lot of peace while you were away, Go back to where you were, you better go away!)x2

Dadiii! Dadiii! Dadii! Babaa Babaa Babaa .. while you were away! x2

(Daddy! Daddy! Daddy! Babaa Babaa Babaa .. while you were away! x2)

Turaikarete maisha mega while you were away, tamba ucoke kou urari, you better go away!

(We were living a good life while you were away, go back to where you were, you better go away!)x2

Athie!

(Akwende!) (He should go!)

Na Athie!

(Na Akwende!) (And He Should!)

Ne guthie riu!

(Ni kwenda sasa!) (It’s time to go!)

Here’s the video;

 {youtube}FAK90yZAzOg{/youtube}

In 2012, Kamande wa Kioi was be charged in Court after National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) found him guilty of hate speech in one of his songs.

Kamande started playing the guitar in church when he was 12 years old and later on he was a guitarist with the Kenya Police Band where he rose to the rank of a Constable in the police force before resigning to do music full time.

THROWBACK THURSDAY: Buddha Blaze With The HipHop Legend Called Guru!

Buddha Blaze is a huge figure in the background of Kenyan entertainment having mentored and brought some of Kenya’s best rappers to the fore!
I am talking about bringing the likes of Octopizzo to the fore and helping them, mature as artists. And indeed Octopizzo has matured.

And I have a photo of Buddha Blaze chilling with a hiphop legend I grew up listening to who went by the moniker Guru. Guru was one half of the duo Gangstar alongside DJ Premier. Unfortunately, he passed on after losing his battle to cancer. The hiphop heads appreciate Guru’s legacy but this is about this particular photo:

The First Lady Releases a Song About Women Standards

Actor and first lady of Sub Sahara Entertainments’ Urban Hip Hop group “Military Swag Team” KUSH officially releases her sensual – energy filled -feel good single “Chikicha”. When asked about what the track meant to her she informed us “It’s a track about women and standards in the club”. In a society where standards seem to disappear after the first shot she emphasized how the song “addresses women who love to turn up and shake their booty just like everybody else but still hold their own and stay true to their standards whatever they may be.”

However it’s her love for Kapuka and dancing that really inspired the track.

This song is set to be in playing in a club near you, enjoy!

Empowering the Youth to be Their Brother’s Keeper Is Not the Government’s Role, Or Is It?

#AskWaikenda has taken a different aspect to have a conversation with the most important resource of any nation and that is the youth on how they can play their role first in ensuring a nation is secure, be their brothers keeper and then demand the best from the government.

What is the role of youth in securing a nation? Has the government done enough for the youth to ensure they do not get into crime? What is the plan to empower the youth and let them appreciate that they cannot be used as pawns to make a nation insecure.

Chris Kirubi’s Asks Uhuru Kenyatta To Declare A ‘State Of Emergency’

Kenyans are slowly becoming disgruntled with the state of things in Kenya, namely the rampant poaching and insecurity that have gone out of control.

A month barely passes before you hear of the tragic massacre of human beings and elephants or rhinos. The current situation is currently causing tribal ‘fights’ on social media , incognito battle lines have been drawn, the CORD supporters VS the Jubilee supporters. CORD supporters feel that the government has failed the people and Uhuru-Ruto feel that CORD is trying to topple the government.

Chris Kirubi reckons that he only thing that could save us would be a ‘State Of emergency’

” Dear Mr. President, the security situation is so grave and all those inciting and causing confusion are not helping the situation. We cannot allow things to happen like we are in the Middle East. Kenya is the cream of East Africa and it is time you declared a state of emergency to sober everybody in this nation. The strong arm of the law in this country must be felt. Please do not waste any time…Save our country! cc. Uhuru Kenyatta “

Romantic Fling with Cleaner Lands Kenyan Doctor Into Trouble

Trapped is a hilarious audience-pleasing fast-paced comedy. Its physical over-the-top makes our last show Dangerous Affairs seem like a prayer meeting by comparison.

The comedy is starring Kenya’s superstars directed by Mbeki Mwalimu. The setting of Trapped is a medical hospital. A doctor (Nick Ndeda) is practicing the lecture he will deliver to an assembly of fellow gynaecologists in less than an hour. The speech’s success is vital to his career. Interruptions abound. First it’s various other medical staff rehearsing their quartet dance routines for the Sakata Dance Competition (i.e. the cheeky Nigerian doctor played by Maina Olwenya; tough talking matron played by Yvonne Carter; the temptress – sexy and alluring nurse played by Lulu Wilson and the new intern doctor played by Henry Gitau Ngogoyo). Then a long-ago ex (Wangari Gioche), who was once a cleaner at the hospital, brings the news that she gave birth 16 years earlier to the doctor’s daughter (Janet Kirina) and that the daughter is in the hospital in search of Dad! Yes, there is his harsh wife (Rosemary Waweru), and she knows nothing of the past liaison!

And in the spiraling chaos of deceit, false identity and manic cover-up that ensues, the mission is to avoid the daughter, pacify the ex, keep the chief specialist and hospital deputy director (Derrick Amunga) at bay and fend off various distractions, among them a patient from deep in the village excited by the goings-on (Johnson Chege) and an inquisitive police officer.

Risper Faith Has a Fashion Fail in a Tiny Body Hugging Swim Suit (Photo)

Some materials can be very flattering such as Matte jersey, Cotton and Wool blend. Others can be very unflattering because they cling on to lose fat like a spray on tan.

These fabrics include spandex which makes your fat look like its wrestling for dominance producing such a grotesque sight that Samson would chose to remain blind.
We have all had fashion fails; even the queen of fashionistas has had her share of fashion disasters. It’s like a scourge that we are all not resistant to. Risper faith had a fashion fail when she stepped out in a very, very unflattering swimsuit.

A few people dissed her for that but she was a good sport and just told them ‘Tumbo ntakata tu msijali.’

Outrage Is The New Black: On Vera Sidika and The Campus Diva

I saw a blog post and was sufficiently impressed, nay, I was blown away by it and so I want to syndicate it. I do not know the author of the post but from what I gather, she is called Brenda Wambui.
And her post is that of an intelligent Kenyan  airing her anger at the hypocrisy on display in the Kenyan gallery in regards to Vera Sidika and her skin bleaching.

Outrage Pornography: Memes, news articles, TV segments, email forwards, or other forms of media that are designed to invoke outrage. This is especially true for political-related topics. Viewers of outrage porn often become addicted and spend many hours per day trying to seek new outrage highs.

Many Kenyan citizens of the internet seem to constantly be on the lookout for things to be outraged by. We are professionally furious. Media outlets, which are in it for the pageviews, are only too eager to give it to us. Outrage sells. We live in an attention economy where eyeballs on articles are the main currency online. Nothing is easier than putting up a post that will shock people, make them feel sad/disgusted/pray for whomever is concerned then share it on Facebook, Twitter and other social media.

On Friday 6th June, I was at NTV studios to comment on Vera Sidika’s skin lightening and lifestyle, as well as the campus diva, Catherine Aluoch. As Murphy’s Law would have it, my microphone and camera both failed, and the only thing I managed to get out was that “Society has been forced to look at itself in the mirror” before I got tuned out. What I did not get to say was that I feel that we are great fans of outrage porn – addicted to feeling morally superior and righteously indignant – and that we are very hypocritical.

At the heart of the criticism directed towards both was a sense of both being right, and wronged. Catherine Aluoch spoke on being a “kept woman” – maintained by old men (conflated with married men, as if old men are definitely married, and vice versa) in exchange for sexual favours. She is a student at the University of Nairobi’s Medical School, and she lives in a large three-bedroomed apartment in an upmarket area – a feat apparently unachievable by any other means.

Many Kenyan commenters felt that it was wrong for this girl to live this way – the men were married, and old enough to be her father. Her lack of shame also grated many – it was shocking that she could show her face on live television and admit to her using men for their money, and not caring about their marital status. People also wondered how/why such a smart girl (she could not have made it into medical school if she were daft, apparently) would be a “gold digger”. Vera Sidika, on the other hand, has spoken of her rich Nigerian boyfriend who “treats her like a queen”, buys her gifts and affords her a fine life. Even then, she says, she still makes her own money and invests it wisely. This also seems to grate many Kenyans.

However, what happens when we set aside our sense of moral superiority aside and revisit the situation? We see a man expressing interest in a woman because of her body, and a woman expressing interest in a man because of his money. Why are we seemingly okay with the men in question (I saw very few comments shaming the man) but angry about the women? Is it that biological determinism trumps economics? It is fallacious to say that “men are predisposed to such behavior” since we know that we are a product of both our genetics and our surroundings. We have learned to be this way. Why are men forgiven for wanting women based on a single characteristic (their bodies) while women are maligned for wanting men for their money? Why is there a word for women who only want men for their money (gold-digger), but no word for rich men who only want women for their bodies/beauty?

When it comes to the issue of extra-marital affairs, it is extremely hypocritical of us to act shocked and offended by this young woman, yet this is the very same society where we have advertisements running on TV asking us to use condoms in our extra marital affairs, since the famous Jimmy Gathu advertisements asking us to “wacha mpango wa kando” clearly did not work. The rate of HIV/AIDS infections among married people is the highest in the country, so pray do tell, what makes us morally superior to Catherine? Let us remember that she is not the one in a covenant of marriage, the man is, so I wonder why she is the one we are outraged at.

When it comes to criticism on gold digging (regardless of marital status), we have to remember the roots of the marriage institution: marriage was, and in some parts of the world still is, about the exchange of property and power between two men (the father of the bride and the father of the groom). The women are the chattels, and in exchange, the father of the bride receives gifts, sometimes in form of dowry. Marriage as an institution was created solely to allow wealth to pass directly outside the patriarch’s lineage. Marriage for love is a relatively new concept. We still view women largely as chattels, so it may be argued that gold diggers are doing relationships/marriage right: they are merely playing the system, which is slightly more progressive but still outdated at its core, to their advantage.

We are still telling women that finding good men who can take care of them should be their top priority. Why are we angry when these women listen? We sneer at the idea of women who provide for themselves, and fault them for being “too independent” and looking for companions out of a desire to be with someone rather than need. Is it so hard to do away with the notion that women should rely on men? In our rush to shame people and feel superior to them, can we please pick one thing to be outraged about? Is it the fact that women are becoming more independent, or the fact that some are openly relying on men for their financial security? We can’t have it both ways.

Vera Sidika was also criticized for “bleaching her skin”, though she later informed us that it was skin lightening, not bleaching. She was accused of having low self-esteem, having a colonial mindset, not appreciating her black beauty among many other things. There is more to skin bleaching than self-hate/low self-esteem, this paper by Dr. Christopher A.D. Charles shows that. Humans are extremely complex, there cannot possible be a one size fits all explanation as to why (black) people bleach.

Vera spoke of having done it to improve her business, seeing as her body is her business. She reports having been able to get more business and charge more money, and people all over have been telling her how great she looks. She even has people cursing at her on public fora, then messaging her privately to ask her how she did it since they would like to do it too. To make matters worse, many people online were taken aback by her openness on the matter, since they expected her to be ashamed, or to lie about it.

The idea of beauty in many countries has been conflated with whiteness. White is beautiful. Black, not so much. This image is both overtly and covertly reinforced by the media we consume, and can be seen in the endless “lightskin-darkskin” wars on Kenyan Twitter. Why, then, are we outraged when people succumb to our immense pressure to be “lightskins” and lighten themselves? Is this when it suddenly becomes a joke and we shake our heads and say that they should have known better?

Why is it that Vera’s earnings power has increased, rather than decreased? If it were true that we hate the act of skin bleaching, her earnings power would have reduced. She would not have made money off it, and perhaps others would not do it after learning from her experience, but that is not the case. It is so easy to label this low self-esteem or colonial mentality. However, we are part of a society that has, and continues to offer more privilege to whiteness.

Why do we penalize people like Vera for merely acknowledging this and acting accordingly? Why do we take away her agency, with which she decided that she wanted to change her reality, and instead make her an object which should “know better”? Why is it that only the bleaching of women is reported, making it a gendered issue, yet it is known that some men participate in the process as well? Why do we ignore the part we play in laughing at dark women and preferring light ones? Instead of asking women why they bleach, why can’t we ask the men who proudly declare so why they “prefer light women”? We make these women out to be crazy and naïve, and as having betrayed their culture, yet we continue to project images of female beauty everywhere we turn that look nothing like Kenyan/most African women. Who is the fool here?

This cycle of outrage needs to end. Outrage pornography is an outlet for us, it allows us to feel smug/good about ourselves, while making others look and feel bad. There is a large element of self-gratification in it – the outrage is not for others, it is for us. We feel good after having lashed out. We feel that we have done our bit, and can move on to the next one. We are brought together by a common cause – righteous indignation – and it feels great. Don’t get me wrong, there are many times when outrage is justifiable, but not in such times. Outrage at non-performing leaders is perfectly fine, in fact, it should be a must. However, outrage at people we have created and elevated to glory is not, so why are we outraged?

When Kenyan society looks at Vera Sidika and Catherine Aluoch it hates what it sees, and thinks it is ugly, yet what it sees is itself.

Was NTV’s Sister Station Banned from Any Presidential Function? Here’s the Truth

Earlier this week, State House directed that NTV’s sister station, NTV Uganda, should not be allowed to cover all presidential functions.

According to reports, the station was suspended for alleging that the president was ‘sleeping’ during the recent budget reading. The express orders were allegedly communicated to the head of news department at the television, Maurice Mugisha on Tuesday morning.

Sources said the decision to temporary blacklist NTV followed a news story in which reporters alleged that President Museveni was among government officials who were deep asleep during the reading of the national budget last week.

President Museveni

Officials allegedly maintained that Museveni was not sleeping as alleged by NTV but meditating with his eyes closed.

“Even during our internal meetings at State House, he sometimes closes his eyes to meditate. This is not a new thing,” said a high ranking official, adding, “All we want is NTV to give respect to the President. Whether you like him or not, you can’t make fun of him in a very disparaging way. A President is a President.”

However, the station has come out to deny the allegations.

NTV Uganda

According to a statement posted on its Facebook page this morning, the allegations are baseless and have been fanned by some reckless persons/media outlets. Here’s the statement;

“NTV (U) would like to dismiss the social media allegations that it has been suspended from covering Presidential functions as false, baseless and untrue.

These allegations have been fanned by some reckless persons/media outlets following an image posted on social media depicting the person of the President in a compromising position. NTV would like to confirm that the image was taken and posted by an unknown person with the intention of tarnishing the image of the station and the President.

We urge whoever is behind these viral allegations to stop henceforth or else face the consequences of these actions going forward. NTV (U) is committed to its editorial policy of fair, accurate and balanced reporting and would like to disassociate itself from such irresponsible acts.

We continue to shape the agenda of debate on Uganda and for Uganda and pride in professional reporting. We apologize to the President for this mishap and urge our viewers to exercise restraint while sharing our images on social media.

Condom Company Approaches Gospel Artistes For Endorsements

Celebrity endorsements are fast-becoming mainstream in the country.

I am sure you have spotted ‘Wilbroda’ in a few ads, Papa Shirandula in the GOTV ad, Teacher Wanjiku in the Airtel ad and Jalang’o in that tissue ad.

Most of these actors endorse family friendly brands and you rarely see them doing any risky ads. But condom brand 69 is going to change all this. The condom brand is allegedly looking for mainstream celebrities to advertise their ads and has even approached gospel artistes such as Hey-Z and gospel event organizer Brian Noah who have not declined nor accepted the offer.

Is This Prezzo’s New Girlfriend?

I don’t think there is a Kenyan celebrity who has exclusively dated as many women as CMB Prezzo. He is Kenya’s very own serial monogamist.

From Goldie, to Diva, to Huddah and to Chagga Barbie all in a span of about an year..But I can’t blame him, everyone is looking for that fairy-tale happy ending aren’t we? And we know that the number of frogs one has to kiss to get that prince/princess is usually large.

Prezzo seems to have fallen in love with a lass, who we can assume is pretty since he has a history of dating hot women and also from the eye photo he shared, she could be hot. Prezzo however seems hell-bent on keeping this relationship under-tow. He shared this ‘eye pic’ of a girl whom we shall refer to as angel eyes with a caption “Less than 24 hrs and it feel like a decade #QueenWithTheCrown.”

The eyes coincidentally look like the eyes on the woman holding Prezzo’s face below:

Hmm ….Could this be Prezzo’s new catch? Only time will tell

The Wise Say, “Education Empowers You”, but Is It True In Holy Dave’s case?

Most Kenyan artists have had initiatives aimed in giving back to the society, but Holy Dave went the whole nine yards and founded The David Muthengi Foundation alongside his friends; Kelele Takatifu, Ken the Dj, Christ Cycoz  & Recapp. These Gospel artists chose to focus on Education, sighting that Education plays a direct role in reducing poverty and enhancing economic development.

With the Braeside School Community Service program they hosted a series of charity concerts raising support for purchasing special education learning materials for underprivileged students. The beneficiaries of the last two charity concerts were Thika School for the Blind and Dagoreti Special School.

Apart from partnering with like minded individuals and organizations on different charity causes the foundation raises support from well-wishers and manages the funds under the David Muthengi Foundation Trust Fund to pay school fees for underprivileged students, purchase learning materials for needy schools and to provide pocket money to disadvantaged students so that they can study comfortably. For more information visit http://www.davidmuthengi.com/ or contact Holy Dave on 0707966613 (business line)

Kiss TV’s Grace Msalame Looks Extremely Sexy In This Curve Hugging Black Dress

Thanks to the butt implant and bum enhancing creams it’s really difficult to differentiate which curves are real and which once are not.

But even before the ‘voluptuous fad’ hit , KISS TV’s Grace Msalme’s curevs existed and I have to admit she has maintained her body pretty well. She is a mother of two but she has the kind of body many of us can only dream off. The presenter recently stepped out in  A LBD (Little Black Dress) and kept her accessories simple opting for a statement necklace ,loop earrings a watch and a ring and pointy nude and gold pumps.
